I am about to begin my final year as an undergraduate college student. I have come to love my university over the time that I have been there: the students and professors alike have created an environment of engaged, discussion-based learning, and students are encouraged to question and to think critically in every area of study. Attending my school has opened me up to a world of knowledge and has allowed me to meet so many fascinating, unique people. All of these factors should prompt feelings of excitement, of relief, of warm and fuzzy nostalgia for what everyone has told me are the best four years of my life. However, I can’t shake this bitter, sinking feeling of returning to my university campus — one that claims to be liberal but is instead full of hypocrisies, where free speech is touted as a given, but dissent from the reigning narrative is often shunned and demonized.The last three years, with all of the beautiful moments, the breadth of knowledge I have been exposed to, and the growth that I have undergone, have been truly emotionally taxing. My proud Zionism, my outspoken love of Israel, has grown exponentially since beginning college. Starting as a freshman, I knew virtually nothing about Israel or about the region, but various experiences, including taking a class on the Holocaust, becoming more involved with Hillel and Chabad, witnessing anti-Semitism parading as ‘anti-Zionism’ on my campus, traveling to Israel with Taglit-Birthright, and reading works written about Israel and Judaism, has caused me to begin exploring my identity more in-depth. My resulting loud-and-proud love of my Jewish identity, of Israel, has paved the way to me being alienated, criticized, and demonized.It is one thing to be attacked for various political ideals, such as being pro-life or pro-choice, for being for or against gay marriage, for supporting or denouncing this or that environmental policy. Politics, in general and by its nature, is messy, and being politically opinionated will inevitably get a person into hot water now and again. However, I have been struggling deeply with the fact that my very identity, my very core, my very spiritual and historical integrity, has incessantly been politicized, and subsequently, has mercilessly been questioned, denounced, and delegitimized, over and over again, during my time as a university student.I have been given the middle finger for wearing an Israel Defense Forces shirt while walking to class; I have been sneered at hatefully while tabling for Taglit-Birthright or my Israel group in the University Center; I have seen an Israeli soldier, who identified as gay and who I helped bring to campus to speak about his experiences in the IDF, being yelled at and labeled a ‘pinkwasher’ by hateful Students for Justice in Palestine members; I have been called a ‘Zionazi’ after posting a photo on Facebook of my Israel group and me with Kay Wilson, a survivor of Palestinian terrorism; I have had doors shut in my face on the way to the dining hall for having an Israeli flag tied to my backpack during Apartheid Week (or, as it should be more accurately named, Israel Hate Week); I have had arguments started with me in the library, out of the blue, after some of my peers saw the ‘I Heart Israel’ stickers on my computer.I have also, tragically, seen my Jewish friends shy away from their identity over the past few years, and I have felt recent Birthright alumni grow quieter and quieter in their excitement over Israel. I have witnessed various Jewish organizations on campus stray from hosting events that are ‘too political’ or ‘too polarized’ for fear of drawing protests. I have seen people who support Israel choosing silence for the sake of their safety and comfort, while the Israel-bashers and anti-Zionists grow louder in their hatred as they hide behind a deceptive veil of ‘Palestinian activism’, despite refusing to condemn a single one of the atrocious acts committed towards Palestinian-Arabs by their own ruling powers.Because of this, because of the grab-bag of propaganda, lies, and labels at the disposal of Israel-haters, and because of the culture of fear that has permeated the Jewish community when it comes to expressing support for the Jewish State, my university campus, along with many others, has become a nearly unbearable place to be for Israel’s supporters.As author and activist Gil Troy pointed out in his book, Why I Am a Zionist, “Viewing all of Israeli history through the prism of the Arab-Israeli conflict is as distorting as reducing all of Canadian history to the French-English struggle or all of American history to the black-white struggle.” Israel’s history is rich, and extends far beyond the narrow confines of conflict; its kibbutzim and moshavim, its flowering deserts and resurrection of an ancient language that the Jews have had ties to for thousands of years in and out of Diaspora; the beautiful mosques and their calls to prayer in the Old City of Jerusalem; the Bedouins in the Negev who live by the stars and the Druze in the Galilee and Golan with their secretive traditions; the nightclubs of Tel Aviv and the Baha’i Gardens of Haifa.Israel is multi-faceted, and it is a unique country that is not able to be fully, or even partly, understood through the constricted dimensions that CNN and The New York Times so carefully craft. Allegations of apartheid are simply false; anyone who goes to Israel can see Jews, Arabs, Ethiopians, and Russians shopping together at supermarkets, being treated at the same hospitals, riding the same buses and working the same jobs. The term ‘occupation’ is mis-applied; occupation is when one sovereign entity takes over another, often militarily. However, ‘Palestine’ was never a sovereign country, and Judea and Samaria, more commonly known as the West Bank, is disputed territory, and is therefore not occupied by Israel. In fact, Israel has given large portions of the West Bank to the Palestinian Authority in the hope of coming closer to peace. The carefully-spun web of lies surrounding and encompassing issues about Israel can easily be untangled, if one is motivated to see past them to the truth.Zionism, the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, is a beautiful celebration of what it means to be tied to the Jewish culture, history, and religion. Just like any expression of nationalism, any celebration of peoplehood, Zionism offers a community and a common ground to unite over. Zionism binds every kind of Jew — secular, religious, Mizrahi, Ashkenazi — through their mutual story of struggle, wandering, and loss, and through their celebration of re-claiming their national rights and their dignity as a people.It is time for a Zionist revolution. It is time for my fellows lovers of the Jewish state, of its historical and spiritual significance, to allow the pride surging through our blood to come to the surface, and instead of falling back on names, dates, and facts, to show, through our love and our passion, why it is that we love Israel so much, and why Israel is a miracle. It is time for us to refuse to back down, no matter how terrifying it can be to face the toxic hate of the so-called Palestinian rights activists on campus, and no matter how outnumbered we are. It is time for us to bring the love, the beauty, the spirit, the simcha, and the pride that we feel, and weave it into the fabric of our daily lives, to bring it forth whenever we can and not just when we are faced with hatred.I made myself a promise a couple of years ago to always stand up for what is just and true; therefore, I will invariably defend the right of any people to self-determination, as it is a basic human right. The Jewish people have just, in the last 67 years, re-claimed their own self-determination after two millennia of living without it, and I refuse to allow anyone to delegitimize that. Defending Israel is exhausting, and it is often a lonely task, but it is one that is existentially essential. I will never stop, and I hope that my fellow lovers of Israel will not either. We will feel distressed, we will feel irate, we will feel hopeless, but I hope that we will continue to sing ‘Am Yisrael Chai’, no matter what.

An Israeli man was lightly wounded in a stabbing Sunday night in the West Bank. The Israel Defense Forces said that the man, aged 26, was set upon by a group of Palestinian assailants at a gas station on Route 443, near Modiin.The IDF said troops opened fire at one of the suspects in the group in order to prevent his escape. He was confirmed dead at the scene by Israeli medical personnel.The Israeli fled the attack, arriving at a nearby checkpoint for help. He was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem after Magen David Adom paramedics were called to the scene to provide initial treatment.The other three men who carried out the attack fled the scene. Israeli security forces began searching the area for the rest of the assailants.Traffic on the highway was blocked by the security forces on the scene, Israel Police reported.In recent days security forces have been on high alert in the West Bank following the deaths of a 1-year-old infant Ali Saad Dawabsha last week and his father Saad Dawabsha on Saturday morning.The Palestinian infant was killed in the West Bank town of Duma last month in a firebombing attack on the family’s home, apparently by Jewish extremists.His father was seriously wounded in the attack, but remained alive for another week, before ultimately succumbing to his wounds.The baby’s mother Riham and brother Ahmad remain in critical and serious conditions, respectively, in Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, outside Tel Aviv.Israel Defense Forces Central Command told Israel Radio the deaths of the Duma firebombing victims will spark a wave of Palestinian demonstrations and trigger acts of revenge in the West Bank.Three Israeli soldiers were wounded — two of them seriously — when a Palestinian terrorist plowed his car into them as they stood at a hitchhiking post in the northern West Bank on Thursday afternoon.Dozens of Palestinians threw stones at IDF soldiers and lit tires on fire near the West Bank village of Duma Saturday following the funeral for Saad Dawabsha.

The infant mortality rate in Gaza has risen for the first time in more than half a century, a new study by the United Nation’s aid agency for Palestinian refugees says.“The number of babies dying before the age of one has consistently gone down over the last decades in Gaza, from 127 per 1,000 live births in 1960 to 20.2 in 2008. At the last count, in 2013, it had risen to 22.4 per 1,000 live births,” according to a statement from the UNRWA relief agency released over the weekend.“Every five years UNRWA conducts a survey of infant mortality across the region, and the 2013 results were released this week,” continued the report, adding that because of the data it would conduct a new Gaza-specific survey this year.It said that neonatal mortality in Gaza — the number of babies who die before four weeks old — rose from 12 per 1,000 live births in 2008 to 20.3 in 2013.The statement quoted Akihiro Seita, director of the agency’s health program, as saying that the sudden upswing was unprecedented in the Middle East.“When the 2013 results from Gaza were first uncovered, UNRWA was alarmed by the apparent increase. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Sunday thwarted Culture Minister Miri Regev’s plans to cut off funding to cultural institutions she deemed “unpatriotic,” claiming it “limited artistic freedom of expression.”In response to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, two deputies in the Attorney General’s Office, Orit Koren and Dina Zilber, clarified the opinion of their boss on the issue.“Damage to the ability to produce and distribute an artwork on the basis of its content would be seriously damaging in particular to freedom of expression,” the deputies wrote.“For that reason, the attorney general opposes [the idea],” they explained.“ To prevent the limitation of artistic freedom of expression” and ensure a richer national discussion, Koren and Zilber wrote, the funding decisions for individual cultural institutions are meant to be carried out on the “professional level,” instead of at the political level.Allowing Regev to withdraw funding from theaters and art galleries that have plays and installations that “delegitimize Israel” — as Regev said in June — would have a chilling effect on artistic expression for some institutions, “out of the fear that it would endanger their government funding.”Regev froze state funding for the Arabic-language al-Midan theater in June following its production of a play, A Parallel Time, based on the life of Walid Dakaa, who killed an Israeli soldier. When I speak to people about climate change, they often say that perhaps it will be a problem for future generations, but not now. The recent very severe heat wave in Israel, with temperatures ranging from the mid 90s to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in the deaths of a one-year old baby and an 18 year old soldier and in many other people fainting or suffering from dehydration, is an indication that the effects of climate change are already being felt. Other countries in the Middle East experienced even higher temperatures, which reached 122 degrees F in Iraq and 134 degrees F in Iran.Of course the Middle East is not the only region already suffering from the effects of climate change. In the U.S., as I write this on August 4, 2015, there are 23 major wildfires in California, some burning out of control, worsened by the very dry conditions after four years of severe drought, and Florida is suffering from record floods after several days of heavy rains. The heat waves, drought, wildfires, flooding, when rains do fall, and mudslides in California have been so severe over many years that the governor of California has said that, “humanity is on a collision course with nature.”There have been increasingly dire warnings about climate change from science academies worldwide and the vast majority of climate experts. There warnings are reinforced by the following: Science academies worldwide, 97% of climate scientists, and 99.9% of peer-reviewed papers on the issue in respected scientific journals argue that climate change is real, is largely caused by human activities, and poses great threats to humanity.Every decade since the 1970s has been warmer than the previous decade and all of the 16 warmest years since temperature records were kept in 1880 have been since 1998. 2014 was the warmest year recorded and 2015 is on track to be even warmer, with the first six months of 2015 being the warmest initial six months ever. Polar icecaps and glaciers worldwide have been melting rapidly, faster than scientific projections.Consistent with the recent events mentioned above, there has been an increase in the number and severity of heat waves, droughts, wildfires, storms, floods, and other climate-related events.Many climate experts believe that we are close to a tipping point when climate change will spiral out of control, with disastrous consequences, unless major positive changes soon occur.Here is what is especially frightening. All the severe climate events so far have been due to a temperature increase of about 1.5 degrees F since the start of the industrial revolution. While climate scientists hope that the total temperature increase can be limited to 3.6 degrees F, largely because that is the best that can be hoped for based on the greenhouse gases (GHGs) already in the atmosphere and current trends, the world is now on track for an average increase of 7 – 9 degrees F, which would produce a world with almost unimaginably negative climate events.Another important factor to consider is that the Pentagon and other military groups believe that climate change will increase the potential for instability, terrorism, and war by reducing access to food and clean water and by causing tens of millions of desperate refuges fleeing from droughts, wildfire, floods, storms, and other effects of climate change.Based on the above facts, it is essential that averting a climate catastrophe become a central focus for society today. Fortunately, there has been some progress in terms of shifts to renewal energy and increased fuel efficiency of cars, but much more must be done to avert a climate disaster.-One issue that has been largely overlooked is the major contribution of animal-based diets and agriculture to climate change. A 2006 UN Food and Agriculture Organization report, “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” indicated that animal-based agriculture emits more GHGs (in CO2 equivalents) than is emitted by all the cars, planes, ships, and all other means of transportation worldwide! A 2009 cover story in World Watch magazine, “Livestock and Climate change,” by two environmentalists associated with the World Bank, indicated that the livestock sector is responsible for at least 51 percent of all human-induced greenhouse gases! This very significant effect is due to the fact that methane emitted by cows and other animals is at least 72 times as potent per molecule as CO2 during the 20 years that methane stays in the atmosphere.Bottom line: it is essential that there be a major societal shift away from animal-based diets in order to avert a climate catastrophe and other potential environmental disasters and to help shift our imperiled planet onto a sustainable path.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has signed an agreement with Tel Aviv University under which a new joint center for innovation in aviation will be established in order to develop technologies to protect airline reservations systems, authentication for security purposes, and financial systems, as well as to develop ways to run airlines more efficiently using big data and advanced intelligence.Two weeks ago, the New York Stock Exchange was shut down for nearly four hours for still-unexplained reasons – possibly, according to some experts, due to hacker activities. That incident generated headlines all over the world, but there was a second unexplained outage as well on July 8 – the grounding of all flights by United Airlines for nearly an hour. Was it due to hacking? A United Airlines official said there was “no indication that this was caused by an outside entity,” but it wasn’t the first time United – or flights by other airlines – were grounded for “unexplained” reasons.That airlines are vulnerable to hackers is well-established. In June, for example, planes were grounded in Poland after hackers breached the network at Warsaw’s Chopin airport, causing delays that affected some 1,400 passengers. In May, United removed a passenger from a flight after he apparently hacked into a plane’s navigation system via its entertainment system. And in January, Malaysia Airlines saw hackers break into its website.And airlines realize just how vulnerable they are. In May, United announced a Bug Bounty contest, inviting hackers to test its online systems to find weaknesses. Last week, the airline awarded a million frequent flier miles to two hackers were able to find vulnerabilities. While he couldn’t share the specifics of the hack (to prevent details of the vulnerabilities from coming out), Jordan Wiens, one of the winners, said that the bugs were somewhat “lame” – an indication that the system may not have been very well-protected.Realizing it has a problem, IATA – which represents 260 airlines that are responsible for 83% of the world’s airline flights – has teamed up with Tel Aviv University to develop security systems in a variety of areas. With the agreement, IATA joined the companies’ forum of Tel Aviv University’s cyber center, and helped organized an international cyber-security conference that took place at Tel Aviv University last month. As part of the joint activity, IATA’s representatives, together with Ramot and Tel Aviv University’s international cyber center, will identify technologies and information that are relevant to the field of international flight.Prof. Raanan Rein, vice president of Tel Aviv University, who signed the agreement on behalf of the university, said that it was another important step in the university’s links with international companies and industry.“The agreement with such a large and important organization as IATA demonstrates Tel Aviv University’s leading role in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as in research,” said Rein.Kobi Zussman, CEO of IATA Israel, said that like hundreds of international bodies, IATA and the world of flight also wish to benefit from Israeli high-tech academic capabilities. “We are convinced that our collaboration with Tel Aviv University will be most valuable for the flight industry,” he said.

Support equipment was also sent but no details were provided."The United States and Turkey, as members of the 60-plus nation coalition, are committed to the fight against ISIL in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region," the statement said, using an acronym for Islamic State.The ability to fly manned bombing raids out of Incirlik, a major base used by both U.S. and Turkish forces, against targets in nearby Syria could be a big advantage. I am about to begin my final year as an undergraduate college student. I have come to love my university over the time that I have been there: the students and professors alike have created an environment of engaged, discussion-based learning, and students are encouraged to question and to think critically in every area of study. Attending my school has opened me up to a world of knowledge and has allowed me to meet so many fascinating, unique people. All of these factors should prompt feelings of excitement, of relief, of warm and fuzzy nostalgia for what everyone has told me are the best four years of my life. However, I can’t shake this bitter, sinking feeling of returning to my university campus — one that claims to be liberal but is instead full of hypocrisies, where free speech is touted as a given, but dissent from the reigning narrative is often shunned and demonized.The last three years, with all of the beautiful moments, the breadth of knowledge I have been exposed to, and the growth that I have undergone, have been truly emotionally taxing. My proud Zionism, my outspoken love of Israel, has grown exponentially since beginning college. Starting as a freshman, I knew virtually nothing about Israel or about the region, but various experiences, including taking a class on the Holocaust, becoming more involved with Hillel and Chabad, witnessing anti-Semitism parading as ‘anti-Zionism’ on my campus, traveling to Israel with Taglit-Birthright, and reading works written about Israel and Judaism, has caused me to begin exploring my identity more in-depth. My resulting loud-and-proud love of my Jewish identity, of Israel, has paved the way to me being alienated, criticized, and demonized.It is one thing to be attacked for various political ideals, such as being pro-life or pro-choice, for being for or against gay marriage, for supporting or denouncing this or that environmental policy. Politics, in general and by its nature, is messy, and being politically opinionated will inevitably get a person into hot water now and again. However, I have been struggling deeply with the fact that my very identity, my very core, my very spiritual and historical integrity, has incessantly been politicized, and subsequently, has mercilessly been questioned, denounced, and delegitimized, over and over again, during my time as a university student.I have been given the middle finger for wearing an Israel Defense Forces shirt while walking to class; I have been sneered at hatefully while tabling for Taglit-Birthright or my Israel group in the University Center; I have seen an Israeli soldier, who identified as gay and who I helped bring to campus to speak about his experiences in the IDF, being yelled at and labeled a ‘pinkwasher’ by hateful Students for Justice in Palestine members; I have been called a ‘Zionazi’ after posting a photo on Facebook of my Israel group and me with Kay Wilson, a survivor of Palestinian terrorism; I have had doors shut in my face on the way to the dining hall for having an Israeli flag tied to my backpack during Apartheid Week (or, as it should be more accurately named, Israel Hate Week); I have had arguments started with me in the library, out of the blue, after some of my peers saw the ‘I Heart Israel’ stickers on my computer.I have also, tragically, seen my Jewish friends shy away from their identity over the past few years, and I have felt recent Birthright alumni grow quieter and quieter in their excitement over Israel. I have witnessed various Jewish organizations on campus stray from hosting events that are ‘too political’ or ‘too polarized’ for fear of drawing protests. I have seen people who support Israel choosing silence for the sake of their safety and comfort, while the Israel-bashers and anti-Zionists grow louder in their hatred as they hide behind a deceptive veil of ‘Palestinian activism’, despite refusing to condemn a single one of the atrocious acts committed towards Palestinian-Arabs by their own ruling powers.Because of this, because of the grab-bag of propaganda, lies, and labels at the disposal of Israel-haters, and because of the culture of fear that has permeated the Jewish community when it comes to expressing support for the Jewish State, my university campus, along with many others, has become a nearly unbearable place to be for Israel’s supporters.As author and activist Gil Troy pointed out in his book, Why I Am a Zionist, “Viewing all of Israeli history through the prism of the Arab-Israeli conflict is as distorting as reducing all of Canadian history to the French-English struggle or all of American history to the black-white struggle.” Israel’s history is rich, and extends far beyond the narrow confines of conflict; its kibbutzim and moshavim, its flowering deserts and resurrection of an ancient language that the Jews have had ties to for thousands of years in and out of Diaspora; the beautiful mosques and their calls to prayer in the Old City of Jerusalem; the Bedouins in the Negev who live by the stars and the Druze in the Galilee and Golan with their secretive traditions; the nightclubs of Tel Aviv and the Baha’i Gardens of Haifa.Israel is multi-faceted, and it is a unique country that is not able to be fully, or even partly, understood through the constricted dimensions that CNN and The New York Times so carefully craft. Allegations of apartheid are simply false; anyone who goes to Israel can see Jews, Arabs, Ethiopians, and Russians shopping together at supermarkets, being treated at the same hospitals, riding the same buses and working the same jobs. The term ‘occupation’ is mis-applied; occupation is when one sovereign entity takes over another, often militarily. However, ‘Palestine’ was never a sovereign country, and Judea and Samaria, more commonly known as the West Bank, is disputed territory, and is therefore not occupied by Israel. In fact, Israel has given large portions of the West Bank to the Palestinian Authority in the hope of coming closer to peace. The carefully-spun web of lies surrounding and encompassing issues about Israel can easily be untangled, if one is motivated to see past them to the truth.Zionism, the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, is a beautiful celebration of what it means to be tied to the Jewish culture, history, and religion. Just like any expression of nationalism, any celebration of peoplehood, Zionism offers a community and a common ground to unite over. Zionism binds every kind of Jew — secular, religious, Mizrahi, Ashkenazi — through their mutual story of struggle, wandering, and loss, and through their celebration of re-claiming their national rights and their dignity as a people.It is time for a Zionist revolution. It is time for my fellows lovers of the Jewish state, of its historical and spiritual significance, to allow the pride surging through our blood to come to the surface, and instead of falling back on names, dates, and facts, to show, through our love and our passion, why it is that we love Israel so much, and why Israel is a miracle. It is time for us to refuse to back down, no matter how terrifying it can be to face the toxic hate of the so-called Palestinian rights activists on campus, and no matter how outnumbered we are. It is time for us to bring the love, the beauty, the spirit, the simcha, and the pride that we feel, and weave it into the fabric of our daily lives, to bring it forth whenever we can and not just when we are faced with hatred.I made myself a promise a couple of years ago to always stand up for what is just and true; therefore, I will invariably defend the right of any people to self-determination, as it is a basic human right. The Jewish people have just, in the last 67 years, re-claimed their own self-determination after two millennia of living without it, and I refuse to allow anyone to delegitimize that. Defending Israel is exhausting, and it is often a lonely task, but it is one that is existentially essential. I will never stop, and I hope that my fellow lovers of Israel will not either. We will feel distressed, we will feel irate, we will feel hopeless, but I hope that we will continue to sing ‘Am Yisrael Chai’, no matter what.

An Israeli man was lightly wounded in a stabbing Sunday night in the West Bank. The Israel Defense Forces said that the man, aged 26, was set upon by a group of Palestinian assailants at a gas station on Route 443, near Modiin.The IDF said troops opened fire at one of the suspects in the group in order to prevent his escape. He was confirmed dead at the scene by Israeli medical personnel.The Israeli fled the attack, arriving at a nearby checkpoint for help. He was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem after Magen David Adom paramedics were called to the scene to provide initial treatment.The other three men who carried out the attack fled the scene. Israeli security forces began searching the area for the rest of the assailants.Traffic on the highway was blocked by the security forces on the scene, Israel Police reported.In recent days security forces have been on high alert in the West Bank following the deaths of a 1-year-old infant Ali Saad Dawabsha last week and his father Saad Dawabsha on Saturday morning.The Palestinian infant was killed in the West Bank town of Duma last month in a firebombing attack on the family’s home, apparently by Jewish extremists.His father was seriously wounded in the attack, but remained alive for another week, before ultimately succumbing to his wounds.The baby’s mother Riham and brother Ahmad remain in critical and serious conditions, respectively, in Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, outside Tel Aviv.Israel Defense Forces Central Command told Israel Radio the deaths of the Duma firebombing victims will spark a wave of Palestinian demonstrations and trigger acts of revenge in the West Bank.Three Israeli soldiers were wounded — two of them seriously — when a Palestinian terrorist plowed his car into them as they stood at a hitchhiking post in the northern West Bank on Thursday afternoon.Dozens of Palestinians threw stones at IDF soldiers and lit tires on fire near the West Bank village of Duma Saturday following the funeral for Saad Dawabsha.

The infant mortality rate in Gaza has risen for the first time in more than half a century, a new study by the United Nation’s aid agency for Palestinian refugees says.“The number of babies dying before the age of one has consistently gone down over the last decades in Gaza, from 127 per 1,000 live births in 1960 to 20.2 in 2008. At the last count, in 2013, it had risen to 22.4 per 1,000 live births,” according to a statement from the UNRWA relief agency released over the weekend.“Every five years UNRWA conducts a survey of infant mortality across the region, and the 2013 results were released this week,” continued the report, adding that because of the data it would conduct a new Gaza-specific survey this year.It said that neonatal mortality in Gaza — the number of babies who die before four weeks old — rose from 12 per 1,000 live births in 2008 to 20.3 in 2013.The statement quoted Akihiro Seita, director of the agency’s health program, as saying that the sudden upswing was unprecedented in the Middle East.“When the 2013 results from Gaza were first uncovered, UNRWA was alarmed by the apparent increase. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Sunday thwarted Culture Minister Miri Regev’s plans to cut off funding to cultural institutions she deemed “unpatriotic,” claiming it “limited artistic freedom of expression.”In response to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, two deputies in the Attorney General’s Office, Orit Koren and Dina Zilber, clarified the opinion of their boss on the issue.“Damage to the ability to produce and distribute an artwork on the basis of its content would be seriously damaging in particular to freedom of expression,” the deputies wrote.“For that reason, the attorney general opposes [the idea],” they explained.“ To prevent the limitation of artistic freedom of expression” and ensure a richer national discussion, Koren and Zilber wrote, the funding decisions for individual cultural institutions are meant to be carried out on the “professional level,” instead of at the political level.Allowing Regev to withdraw funding from theaters and art galleries that have plays and installations that “delegitimize Israel” — as Regev said in June — would have a chilling effect on artistic expression for some institutions, “out of the fear that it would endanger their government funding.”Regev froze state funding for the Arabic-language al-Midan theater in June following its production of a play, A Parallel Time, based on the life of Walid Dakaa, who killed an Israeli soldier. The recent very severe heat wave in Israel, with temperatures ranging from the mid 90s to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in the deaths of a one-year old baby and an 18 year old soldier and in many other people fainting or suffering from dehydration, is an indication that the effects of climate change are already being felt. Other countries in the Middle East experienced even higher temperatures, which reached 122 degrees F in Iraq and 134 degrees F in Iran.Of course the Middle East is not the only region already suffering from the effects of climate change. In the U.S., as I write this on August 4, 2015, there are 23 major wildfires in California, some burning out of control, worsened by the very dry conditions after four years of severe drought, and Florida is suffering from record floods after several days of heavy rains. The heat waves, drought, wildfires, flooding, when rains do fall, and mudslides in California have been so severe over many years that the governor of California has said that, “humanity is on a collision course with nature.”There have been increasingly dire warnings about climate change from science academies worldwide and the vast majority of climate experts. There warnings are reinforced by the following: Science academies worldwide, 97% of climate scientists, and 99.9% of peer-reviewed papers on the issue in respected scientific journals argue that climate change is real, is largely caused by human activities, and poses great threats to humanity.Every decade since the 1970s has been warmer than the previous decade and all of the 16 warmest years since temperature records were kept in 1880 have been since 1998. 2014 was the warmest year recorded and 2015 is on track to be even warmer, with the first six months of 2015 being the warmest initial six months ever. Polar icecaps and glaciers worldwide have been melting rapidly, faster than scientific projections.Consistent with the recent events mentioned above, there has been an increase in the number and severity of heat waves, droughts, wildfires, storms, floods, and other climate-related events.Many climate experts believe that we are close to a tipping point when climate change will spiral out of control, with disastrous consequences, unless major positive changes soon occur.Here is what is especially frightening. All the severe climate events so far have been due to a temperature increase of about 1.5 degrees F since the start of the industrial revolution. While climate scientists hope that the total temperature increase can be limited to 3.6 degrees F, largely because that is the best that can be hoped for based on the greenhouse gases (GHGs) already in the atmosphere and current trends, the world is now on track for an average increase of 7 – 9 degrees F, which would produce a world with almost unimaginably negative climate events.Another important factor to consider is that the Pentagon and other military groups believe that climate change will increase the potential for instability, terrorism, and war by reducing access to food and clean water and by causing tens of millions of desperate refuges fleeing from droughts, wildfire, floods, storms, and other effects of climate change.Based on the above facts, it is essential that averting a climate catastrophe become a central focus for society today. Fortunately, there has been some progress in terms of shifts to renewal energy and increased fuel efficiency of cars, but much more must be done to avert a climate disaster.-One issue that has been largely overlooked is the major contribution of animal-based diets and agriculture to climate change. A 2006 UN Food and Agriculture Organization report, “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” indicated that animal-based agriculture emits more GHGs (in CO2 equivalents) than is emitted by all the cars, planes, ships, and all other means of transportation worldwide! A 2009 cover story in World Watch magazine, “Livestock and Climate change,” by two environmentalists associated with the World Bank, indicated that the livestock sector is responsible for at least 51 percent of all human-induced greenhouse gases! This very significant effect is due to the fact that methane emitted by cows and other animals is at least 72 times as potent per molecule as CO2 during the 20 years that methane stays in the atmosphere.Bottom line: it is essential that there be a major societal shift away from animal-based diets in order to avert a climate catastrophe and other potential environmental disasters and to help shift our imperiled planet onto a sustainable path.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has signed an agreement with Tel Aviv University under which a new joint center for innovation in aviation will be established in order to develop technologies to protect airline reservations systems, authentication for security purposes, and financial systems, as well as to develop ways to run airlines more efficiently using big data and advanced intelligence.Two weeks ago, the New York Stock Exchange was shut down for nearly four hours for still-unexplained reasons – possibly, according to some experts, due to hacker activities. That incident generated headlines all over the world, but there was a second unexplained outage as well on July 8 – the grounding of all flights by United Airlines for nearly an hour. Was it due to hacking? A United Airlines official said there was “no indication that this was caused by an outside entity,” but it wasn’t the first time United – or flights by other airlines – were grounded for “unexplained” reasons.That airlines are vulnerable to hackers is well-established. In June, for example, planes were grounded in Poland after hackers breached the network at Warsaw’s Chopin airport, causing delays that affected some 1,400 passengers. In May, United removed a passenger from a flight after he apparently hacked into a plane’s navigation system via its entertainment system. And in January, Malaysia Airlines saw hackers break into its website.And airlines realize just how vulnerable they are. In May, United announced a Bug Bounty contest, inviting hackers to test its online systems to find weaknesses. Last week, the airline awarded a million frequent flier miles to two hackers were able to find vulnerabilities. While he couldn’t share the specifics of the hack (to prevent details of the vulnerabilities from coming out), Jordan Wiens, one of the winners, said that the bugs were somewhat “lame” – an indication that the system may not have been very well-protected.Realizing it has a problem, IATA – which represents 260 airlines that are responsible for 83% of the world’s airline flights – has teamed up with Tel Aviv University to develop security systems in a variety of areas. With the agreement, IATA joined the companies’ forum of Tel Aviv University’s cyber center, and helped organized an international cyber-security conference that took place at Tel Aviv University last month. As part of the joint activity, IATA’s representatives, together with Ramot and Tel Aviv University’s international cyber center, will identify technologies and information that are relevant to the field of international flight.Prof. Raanan Rein, vice president of Tel Aviv University, who signed the agreement on behalf of the university, said that it was another important step in the university’s links with international companies and industry.“The agreement with such a large and important organization as IATA demonstrates Tel Aviv University’s leading role in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as in research,” said Rein.Kobi Zussman, CEO of IATA Israel, said that like hundreds of international bodies, IATA and the world of flight also wish to benefit from Israeli high-tech academic capabilities. “We are convinced that our collaboration with Tel Aviv University will be most valuable for the flight industry,” he said.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi wasn’t playing around when he officially unveiled the new Suez Canal on Thursday, but his national television station added drama to the broadcast by playing the theme music from the HBO series “Game of Thrones” in the background.A snippet of the Egyptian state TV presentation was uploaded to The Independent’s i100 website.The television producers, no doubt aiming for an uplifting effect, were surely not intending a jab at the president. But the “Game of Thrones” series follows the often-violent political machinations of warring factions vying for power in a fantasy medieval world; Sissi himself seized control of Egypt in a 2013 military coup.It wasn’t clear whether Egyptian state TV received permission from HBO to play the theme music, but as the i100 reporter commented, “if el-Sissi was OK with overthrowing a democratically elected president, he probably isn’t too fussed about minor things like copyright.”The Suez Canal’s new extension involved digging and dredging along 72 kilometers (45 miles) of the 193-kilometer canal, making a parallel waterway at its middle that will facilitate two-way traffic. With a depth of 24 meters (79 feet), the canal now allows the simultaneous passage of ships with up to 66 ft. draught.The project was initially estimated to take three years, but Sissi ordered it completed in one — making it a feather in the cap of the Egyptian leader who hopes it will boost the country’s flagging economy. MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the United States should cooperate with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to fight Islamic State and that this required an international coalition uniting all those for whom the jihadists are "a common enemy".Washington currently heads a coalition conducting air strikes on Islamic State in Syria and Iraq and is cooperating with Turkey to provide air cover for rebels inside Syria.But Moscow has criticized the United States for not working in sync with Syria, an ally of Russia.In comments to Russia's state TV published by his ministry on Sunday, Lavrov recounted two meetings with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry amid the recent intensified high-level diplomatic contacts over Syria and fighting the Sunni jihadis."Our American partners and some countries in the region persistently refuse to recognize Assad as a partner, which is rather strange," Lavrov said."Assad was a fully legitimate partner in destroying chemical arms but somehow he is not in fighting terrorism," the foreign minister said, referring to a chemical disarmament deal brokered by Moscow and Washington earlier in the conflict.The United States, its regional ally Saudi Arabia as well Syrian opposition and rebel groups they back, say Assad had to go. Insurgents recapture villages on Syrian plain vital to Assad-Reuters-AUG 9,15-YAHOONEWS
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Insurgents have regained control of several villages in northwest Syria from government forces and have advanced beyond them, edging closer to a coastal stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad, a monitoring group and other sources said on Sunday.The insurgents launched a counter-offensive after government forces, backed by allied militant groups, last week recaptured the villages on the Sahl al-Ghab plain, which lies close to the city of Hama and is crucial to the defense of coastal mountains that are the heartland of Assad's minority Alawite sect.The insurgents' 'Army of Fatah' alliance includes al Qaeda's Syrian wing, the Nusra Front, the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham group and other factions.On Sunday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Islamist fighters' counter-offensive had forced the Syrian army to withdraw from such villages as Mansoura, Zeyara and Tal Waset toward bases northwest of Hama city.Seven government warplanes and helicopters carried out 80 strikes on the villages located on the plain, the Observatory added.A source close to the Syrian government confirmed the rebel advances in the area.The insurgents have made gains in several parts of Syria in recent months, including capturing most of Idlib province to the northeast of the Sahl al-Ghab plain.Last month Assad alluded to military setbacks when he said the army had been forced to give up some areas in order to hold onto more important ones-A quarter of a million people have died and more than 10 million driven from their homes in Syria's four-year civil war that has left large swathes of the country in the hands of Islamic State militants.(Reporting by Mariam Karouny; Editing by Gareth Jones)
U.S. sends six jets, 300 personnel to Turkey base in Islamic State fight-Reuters-AUG 9,15- YAHOONEWS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States sent six F-16 jets and about 300 personnel to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey on Sunday, the U.S. military said, after Ankara agreed last month to allow American planes to launch air strikes against Islamic State militants from there.The Pentagon said in a statement the "small detachment" is from the 31st Fighter Wing based at Aviano Air Base, Italy. Support equipment was also sent but no details were provided."The United States and Turkey, as members of the 60-plus nation coalition, are committed to the fight against ISIL in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region," the statement said, using an acronym for Islamic State.The ability to fly manned bombing raids out of Incirlik, a major base used by both U.S. and Turkish forces, against targets in nearby Syria could be a big advantage.
