HONG KONG (Reuters) - When the U.S. navy sent a littoral combat ship on its first patrol of the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea during the past week, it was watching the skies as well.The USS Fort Worth, one of the most modern ships in the U.S. navy, dispatched a reconnaissance drone and a Seahawk helicopter to patrol the airspace, according to a little-noticed statement on the navy's website.While the navy didn't mention China's rapid land reclamation in the Spratlys, the ship's actions were a demonstration of U.S. capabilities in the event Beijing declares an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the area - a move experts and some U.S. military officials see as increasingly likely."It's not inevitable but if we are betting paychecks I'll bet that they will eventually declare one, I just don't know when," said a senior U.S. commander familiar with the situation in Asia.ADIZs are not governed by formal treaties or laws but are used by some nations to extend control beyond national borders, requiring civilian and military aircraft to identify themselves or face possible military interception.China sparked condemnation from the United States and Japan when it imposed an ADIZ in the East China Sea, above uninhabited islands disputed with Tokyo, in late 2013.Chinese military facilities now under construction on Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratlys, including a 3,000-metre (10,000-foot) runway and airborne early warning radars, could be operational by the year-end, said the U.S. commander, who declined to be identified.Recent satellite images also show reclamation work on Subi Reef creating landmasses that, if joined together, could make space for a similar sized airstrip. BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic State militants raised their black flag over the local government compound in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday and claimed victory through mosque loudspeakers after overrunning most of the western provincial capital.The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city center, where the Anbar governorate compound is located, police sources said.Fighting continued on Friday in parts of Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, and government forces were still in control of a military command center to the west of the city - the capital of Iraq's largest province.

She spoke to reporters in Beirut after meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam.Activist groups such as the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said government warplanes have been attacking IS positions on the eastern edge of Palmyra. HONG KONG (Reuters) - When the U.S. navy sent a littoral combat ship on its first patrol of the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea during the past week, it was watching the skies as well.The USS Fort Worth, one of the most modern ships in the U.S. navy, dispatched a reconnaissance drone and a Seahawk helicopter to patrol the airspace, according to a little-noticed statement on the navy's website.While the navy didn't mention China's rapid land reclamation in the Spratlys, the ship's actions were a demonstration of U.S. capabilities in the event Beijing declares an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the area - a move experts and some U.S. military officials see as increasingly likely."It's not inevitable but if we are betting paychecks I'll bet that they will eventually declare one, I just don't know when," said a senior U.S. commander familiar with the situation in Asia.ADIZs are not governed by formal treaties or laws but are used by some nations to extend control beyond national borders, requiring civilian and military aircraft to identify themselves or face possible military interception.China sparked condemnation from the United States and Japan when it imposed an ADIZ in the East China Sea, above uninhabited islands disputed with Tokyo, in late 2013.Chinese military facilities now under construction on Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratlys, including a 3,000-metre (10,000-foot) runway and airborne early warning radars, could be operational by the year-end, said the U.S. commander, who declined to be identified.Recent satellite images also show reclamation work on Subi Reef creating landmasses that, if joined together, could make space for a similar sized airstrip. BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Islamic State militants raised their black flag over the local government compound in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday and claimed victory through mosque loudspeakers after overrunning most of the western provincial capital.The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city center, where the Anbar governorate compound is located, police sources said.Fighting continued on Friday in parts of Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, and government forces were still in control of a military command center to the west of the city - the capital of Iraq's largest province.
If Ramadi were to fall completely to Islamic State it would be a strategic blow to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's government, only six weeks after the army and Shi'ite militias took the city of Tikrit from Islamic State."The situation in Ramadi is dire, but the city has not fallen and the battle against criminal Daesh is still ongoing," Anbar governor Sohaib al-Rawi said on Twitter.Ramadi has been contested since last year but the insurgents renewed their offensive on the city in April, sending more than 130,000 people fleeing.An army major whose regiment is positioned near the Anbar operations command described the situation as critical and said the militants had taken control of the only major supply route into the city, making it difficult to send reinforcements.Most army and police units have retreated to the area around the operation command to protect it, he said, but some elite counter-terrorism forces are "fighting for their lives" in the Malaab district of central Ramadi, where they are surrounded.“If the government does not send any reinforcements and the coalition air force does not rescue us, I can confirm we will lose all Ramadi by midnight," the major said. BEIRUT (AP) — The U.N. cultural agency expressed alarm Friday over clashes between Islamic State militants and Syrian government forces near the ancient city of Palmyra — one of the Middle East's most famous UNESCO world heritage sites.UNESCO chief Irina Bokova said Palmyra, famous for its 2,000-year-old ruins, should not become the target of any military activity. She spoke to reporters in Beirut after meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam.Activist groups such as the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said government warplanes have been attacking IS positions on the eastern edge of Palmyra. There has also been fighting on the ground, the groups said.On Friday, Syrian state news agency SANA said troops were "chasing" IS fighters in several areas north and east of Palmyra.The Observatory said the fighting near Palmyra on Friday killed three IS fighters and 10 government troops.The Syrian government has urged the international community to protect Palmyra from IS, which recently destroyed several archaeological sites in neighboring Iraq.Bokova expressed concern over Palmyra, saying "heritage sites should not be used for military purposes."

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel's new rightwing government brings together a former convict, religious conservatives and a far-right justice minister criticised for inflammatory comments on Palestinians.The government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in late on Thursday after winning a narrow approval by parliament.Aryeh Deri, the new economy minister and head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, spent 23 months in prison after he was convicted in 2000 of taking $155,000 in bribes during his term as interior minister.Incoming Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, of the far-right Jewish Home party, has been raising hackles during her past two years as a member of parliament.In a posting on her Facebook page last summer she endorsed an article written in 2002 by then settler leader Uri Elitzur which labelled Palestinian militants as "snakes", described "the entire Palestinian people (as) the enemy" and said anyone supporting terror should be killed.Former general Yoav Galant, appointed as armed forces chief in 2010 was disqualified before he could take office, over allegations that he had illegally grabbed public land around a luxury villa he built, and lied when questioned about it.With magnificent irony, Galant, number two in the centre-right Kulanu party, now becomes minister of construction and housing.The ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism was one of the first parties to sign up to Netanyahu's coalition but has no portfolios.Its members, who have theological misgivings about swearing allegiance to the secular Zionist state, get around the problem by serving as deputy ministers or heads of powerful parliamentary committees.In Netanyahu's new government, party members will hold the positions of deputy minister of health and chair of the house finance committee.The ultra-Orthodox also have a prohibition on shaking hands with members of the opposite sex, but deputy foreign minister Tzipi Hotovely, an ultra-Orthodox woman from the Likud's far right made a point of issuing a statement saying she would not offend foreign officials by refusing any proffered hands, the top-selling Yediot Aharanot newspaper reported on Friday."She intends to abide by the religious ruling that states that if a man extends his hand to a woman, it is customary to shake it so as not to embarrass him," it said.

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — More than 1,100 people are taking refuge in shelters in Guam after the region was hit by a powerful Pacific typhoon.Winds from Typhoon Dolphin battered the U.S. territory of as the center of the storm glanced off it late Friday.Officials say one injury occurred, and that person was taken to Guam Memorial Hospital. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Jenna Gaminde had no additional information on the injury.The typhoon's center passed through a 50-mile-wide channel between Guam and the smaller island of Rota. It packed maximum winds of 110 mph.The National Weather Service says gusts are expected to gradually decrease to non-damaging winds by sunrise.Residents have been preparing for the storm for the past day.There have been reports of downed trees, power outages and damage to power transformers.
