Upon his arrival in the Sala del Tronetto (“little throne room”) of the Vatican Apostolic Palace opposite the papal library, Abu Mazen greeted the Pope with a light-hearted joke: “You look younger”. The Pope gestured to him to enter the library before him and the Palestinian leader finally did so after trying to let the Pope enter first.The closed-door meeting between the Pope and Mahmoud Abbas lasted twenty minutes. Now that the Vatican has formally recognized a Palestinian state, there is a tremendous amount of international momentum for precisely such a UN Security Council resolution. In fact, France plans to push really hard for one by the end of this year. At this point, the only thing that could derail those plans is Barack Obama. For years, the threat of a Security Council veto has been the one thing stopping a resolution from moving forward. But now that Benjamin Netanyahu has been re-elected and has put together a cabinet that does not seem inclined to negotiate with the Palestinians, the Obama administration is pledging to “reevaluate our approach” and says that it will not “prejudge” what it will do if a vote comes up at the United Nations. And as you will see below, one news source is now reporting that behind the scenes Barack Obama has already given the “green light” for France to go ahead with a resolution on a Palestinian state at the UN. But many of the families looking for guests for the Pope's visit plan to remain in Philadelphia, spend time with their visitors, and are not in it for the money, according to Farrell and prospective hosts."It's going to make the experience more exciting to be sharing it," said Renee Bowen, 47, who has offered a room in the Wayne, Pennsylvania, home where she lives with her husband, 12-year-old twins and three cats. "I felt that it would enhance the experience."The Homestay.com site used to connect host families with guests set a minimum fee of $50 per night, with the Web site collecting 10 percent of that. That compares with the $200 or more per night advertised by hotels at least 10 miles outside of Philadelphia that still have rooms available. Upon his arrival in the Sala del Tronetto (“little throne room”) of the Vatican Apostolic Palace opposite the papal library, Abu Mazen greeted the Pope with a light-hearted joke: “You look younger”. The Pope gestured to him to enter the library before him and the Palestinian leader finally did so after trying to let the Pope enter first.The closed-door meeting between the Pope and Mahmoud Abbas lasted twenty minutes. It was held in the presence of Francis’ private secretary, the Egyptian Copt, Yoannis Lahzi Gaid who acting as their interpreter, translating between Italian and Arabic. The Palestinian President then met the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by the Secretary for Relations with States, Mgr. Paul Gallagher. All in all, Abbas stayed in the Vatican for one and a half hours.“During the course of the cordial talks, great satisfaction was expresed regarding the agreement reached with regard to the text for an Accord between the Parties, about certain essential aspects of the life and activities of the Catholic Church in palestine. The Accord will be signed int e near future. Next, the peace process with Israel was discussed and the hope was expressed that direct negotiations between the Parties would resume in order to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict. For this purpose, the wish for Israelis and Palestinians to take determined and courageous decisions in aid of peace, with the support of the international community, was once against reiterated. Finally, in reference to the conflicts afflicting the Middle East, the need for interreligious dialogue was stressed, as well as the importance of combating terrorism.Mahmoud Abbas, who yesterday met with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, will be present at the canonization os two Palestinian nuns tomorrow. Abbas expressed his thanks to the Holy Father for these canonizatons. The two nuns in question are: Marie Alphonsine Danil Ghattas and Mariam of Jesus Crucified Baouardy. They will become Palestine’s first modern-day saints. Pope Francis will be canonizing them alongside the Blesseds Jeanne-Emilie de Villeneuve (France) and Maria Cristina of the Immaculate Conception Brando (Italy). Today the Palestinian leader presented the Pope with a mother of pearl box containing two relics of the future saints. “See you tomorrow,” Abu Mazen said as he took his leave. Despite Israel’s shock at the recent agreement between Palestine and the Holy See, the Israeli Ambassador to the Holy See, Zion Evrony, will be present at tomorrow’s mass, accompanied by his wife and entourage.

Now that the Vatican has formally recognized a Palestinian state, there is a tremendous amount of international momentum for precisely such a UN Security Council resolution. In fact, France plans to push really hard for one by the end of this year. At this point, the only thing that could derail those plans is Barack Obama. For years, the threat of a Security Council veto has been the one thing stopping a resolution from moving forward. But now that Benjamin Netanyahu has been re-elected and has put together a cabinet that does not seem inclined to negotiate with the Palestinians, the Obama administration is pledging to “reevaluate our approach” and says that it will not “prejudge” what it will do if a vote comes up at the United Nations. And as you will see below, one news source is now reporting that behind the scenes Barack Obama has already given the “green light” for France to go ahead with a resolution on a Palestinian state at the UN. If this is truly what Obama plans to do, it will absolutely shatter U.S. relations with Israel and plunge the entire Middle East into chaos.Most Americans don’t realize this, but 136 countries already formally recognize a Palestinian state. Those 136 nations have a combined population of more than 5.5 billion people.As of this moment, the major holdouts are the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe. But most of the European nations have already indicated that they are ready to recognize a Palestinian state if the United States will. In fact, as I mentioned above, France plans to lead the push for a Palestinian state at the UN Security Council.The “State of Palestine” already has “non-member observer” status at the UN, but obviously they are not satisfied with that. They have been very eager for formal recognition by the UN, and now that the Vatican has given them formal recognition that has really bolstered their cause. The following is from a CNN article about the Vatican announcement that stunned the world on Wednesday…The Vatican announced Wednesday that it had brokered a treaty with the “state of Palestine,” upsetting Israeli advocates and propelling Pope Francis into the heart of yet another geopolitical fray.The treaty is expected to be signed “in the near future,” the Vatican said. Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, is scheduled to visit Pope Francis on Saturday, the day before the church canonizes two Palestinian nuns.The treaty is thought to mark the first time the Holy See has formally recognized Palestinian statehood in a legal document.Of course this didn’t come out of a vacuum. The truth is that the Vatican has been moving in this direction for quite some time. Just consider what the Washington Post had to say about the matter…
The move should not be too great a surprise. Since the U.N. General Assembly voted to recognize Palestine as a “non-member observer state” in 2012, the Vatican has referred to the “state of Palestine” in its communiques. When Pope Francis visited the Holy Land last year, the official Vatican program referred to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as the leader of the “state of Palestine.” And the pontiff publicly referred to the “state of Palestine” at a speech in the West Bank.Now that the Vatican has done this, international pressure on Obama to support a UN Security Council resolution on a Palestinian state is increasing.When the UN Security Council resolution being drafted by France comes up for a vote later this year, what will Obama do? According to our sources, they began addressing such questions as the area of the Palestinian state, its borders, security arrangements between Israel and the Palestinians and whether or not to set a hard-and-fast timeline for implementation, or phrase the resolution as a general declaration of intent.Incorporating a target date in the language would expose Israel to Security Council sanctions for non-compliance.If what Debka is reporting is accurate, this represents a massive betrayal of Israel by the Obama administration.However, the Jerusalem Post is reporting just the opposite. They are reporting that Obama plans to veto the French resolution…US President Barack Obama has told associates that he intends to veto the French proposal for a UN Security Council resolution mandating the creation of a Palestinian state and an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank within two years, Channel 10 is reporting on Friday.French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said this past March that Paris planned to start discussions with partners in the “coming weeks” on a United Nations Security Council resolution to lay out the parameters for ending the Middle East conflict.“I hope that the partners who were reluctant will not be reluctant anymore,” said Fabius, referring to the United States, which has traditionally shielded its ally Israel from any action at the United Nations.So what is the truth?-Only time will tell.
But what we do know is that Obama was absolutely furious when Netanyahu promised during his most recent campaign that there would not be a Palestinian state as long as he was in office.And we do know that the Obama administration has pledged to “reevaluate our approach” and has said that it will not “prejudge what we would do if there was a U.N. action”…The U.S. would “reevaluate our approach” based on Netanyahu’s “change in his position,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters as the president flew to Cleveland to deliver a speech on economic policy.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki raised the possibility that the reevaluation could include a shift in position at the U.N. She avoided the usual U.S. language about vetoing Security Council resolutions that Israel opposes.“The prime minister’s recent statements call into question his commitment to a two-state solution,” Psaki told reporters. “We’re not going to prejudge what we would do if there was a U.N. action.”In the final analysis it is so hard to tell exactly what Obama will do, because as he has shown over and over again, lying comes as naturally to him as breathing does.However, I think that we can get some clues about how obsessed Obama is with the establishment of a Palestinian state from public statements that he has made throughout his presidency. (Reuters) - The 1.5 million people expected to pack into Philadelphia this fall for Pope Francis' first visit to the United States will fill the city's hotels, motels and Patricia Hughey's spare rooms.Hughey and her husband are among the more than 1,000 Philadelphia-area households who have signed up to host visitors attending a September summit on families organized by the Roman Catholic church, which will come at the start of the week of Francis' visit to the United States."When I heard that the Pope was going to come, really my first thought was 'Oh my gosh, they are going to need hosts for this enormous crush of people'," said Hughey, who is 57 and said she was raised Catholic in Alabama but is no longer a member of the church.For Hughey, who plans to host two brothers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a married couple from Vietnam, a lot of the appeal was the chance to show off her adopted hometown and meet visitors from some of the 150 foreign delegations attending the World Meeting of Families. Visitors will pay host families a token fee to cover costs."We love to travel and I love meeting people from other countries," said Hughey. "Hosting somebody from a completely other country and culture is an opportunity that's a little hard to come by."The Pope's visit to the "City of Brotherly Love," which will cap a week in which he speaks to the U.S. Congress and the United Nations, is expected to give Philadelphia's economy a $417.9 million boost, with much of the spending going to hotels and restaurants, according to the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. Organizers of the week-long meeting, that leads up to a Sept. 27 Mass expected to draw over 1.5 million people, said they asked area residents to offer space in their homes for visitors who might not be able to afford hotel stays.Founded by Quakers in the late 17th century, Philadelphia gained a large Catholic population through immigration from traditionally Roman Catholic countries such as Italy and Ireland."We'll have young people coming who are willing to sleep on floors, families coming who are thrilled they will have some place to stay they can afford," said Donna Farrell, the meeting's executive director. "They will be viewing this as a pilgrimage."Visitors who do not plan to stay with host families will have a hard time finding accommodation. With more than four months to go before Francis' visit, many major downtown Philadelphia hotels are already booked solid, according to travel reservation web sites.Some 1,200 Philadelphia residents and families have already signed up through the Website at Homestay.com that meeting organizers are using to connect willing host families with potential guests, Farrell said.Francis' visit comes at a time that Americans are drifting away from the Catholic church, according to a study by the Pew Research Center released on Tuesday.About one in five U.S. adults, or 20.9 percent, identified as Catholic during the survey, a decline since the 2007 version of the study, which found 23.9 percent of adults said they were Catholic.The decline reflects the fact that four out of ten people raised in the U.S. Catholic church have left the faith, with that decline partly offset by Catholic immigrants.
ACTIVE HOSTS
It is common for Americans to rent out their homes for events that draw large numbers of out-of-town visitors, such as the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, or Mardis Gras celebrations in New Orleans. But many of the families looking for guests for the Pope's visit plan to remain in Philadelphia, spend time with their visitors, and are not in it for the money, according to Farrell and prospective hosts."It's going to make the experience more exciting to be sharing it," said Renee Bowen, 47, who has offered a room in the Wayne, Pennsylvania, home where she lives with her husband, 12-year-old twins and three cats. "I felt that it would enhance the experience."The Homestay.com site used to connect host families with guests set a minimum fee of $50 per night, with the Web site collecting 10 percent of that. That compares with the $200 or more per night advertised by hotels at least 10 miles outside of Philadelphia that still have rooms available. Some members of the city's immigrant community have also been signing up to host visitors, organizers said. Among them are many families in Philadelphia's St. Helena Parish, whose members include more than 200 families of Vietnamese origin and about 150 from Latin America.The church's pastor, Monsignor Joseph Trinh, said parishioners had been lining up to host guests and offer translation services. Roughly 300 Vietnamese clergy and lay people have signed up to attend the meeting, the second-largest foreign delegation after Canada's, according to organizers."They feel honored to help because we have been welcomed here," said Trinh, who immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in 1975, after U.S. troops withdrew at the end of the Vietnam War."We know what it's like to have four or five people living in a room," said Trinh, who expects to feed about 120 Vietnamese visitors breakfast and dinner each day of the meeting.
