At least since Plato, philosophers have argued that parents are naturally unfit to educate their children. In an ideal state, philosopher-kings such as he ought to usurp their role. Plato had no children. But the enlightened Rousseau, whose ideas ground modern educational theory, was so enamoured with the idea of the state’s responsibility in administering social justice, and in absolving himself of parental responsibility, that he placed the five children he conceived out of wedlock in state orphanages.In his 1935 BBC radio debate with another statist educator, philosopher Bertrand Russell, G.K. Chesterton wryly retorted what every reasonable person recognizes. The immoral example of exceptional men like Rousseau proves the rule: Parents are by nature best positioned to bring up their children. They don’t raise themselves.The intervention of the Second World War and the rise of Communism briefly settled the matter. Yet the brief success of the ideologues that shared Russell’s conviction in the interim led a nascent UN to push back. In its 1959 Rights of the Child, parents were declared to have primary responsibility in educating their children. The declaration was meant to set a hedge of protection for families against the totalitarian impulse of philosopher-kings. Chesterton might well have called the findings of Cambridge anthropologist J.D. Unwin to his aid. Unwin’s monumental 1934 work Sex and Culture studied 80 primitive tribes and six known civilizations over 5,000 years of history. It strongly correlated the success of a civilization to the degree of sexual restraint it observed: ”Any human society is free to choose either to display great energy or to enjoy sexual freedom; the evidence is that it cannot do both for more than one generation.”The life or death of a civilization, which is at stake in the Christian teaching of natural sexual monogamy — a moral conviction and social institution that Unwin observed was common to all flourishing cultures — would have been a powerful argument in favour of teaching that monogamy was essential to the health of the individual and to creating a more just society.Of course, Chesterton did not make that appeal, largely because he and Russell did not debate the sexual education of children. Theirs was the age-old question of which adults, which individuals capable of moral responsibility, were fit to do the task of creating a just society. Was it parents in the natural family unit, or the experts, the philosopher-kings? This brings us to the Ontario sexual education curriculum, whose convictions on human sexual health are not liberating but deleterious. Once again, the debate lies between parental and state jurisdiction in creating a just society. But at the heart of the Ontario sex-ed curriculum is buried the perverse claim that children raise themselves.This is explicit from the very outset of the curriculum, which commences with the teaching of consent to six-year-olds. To teach children what consent means, even in the rudimentary terms the premier gives of “reading facial expressions and emotions,” is to assume that they have the capacity for moral responsibility to exercise it. This is why the legal age of consent is connected to the moral responsibility of adults. Indeed it must be if a just society is the outcome of education.
By six, the human eye has not even fully developed.The intent of the word, consent, is expressive, to be understood in the cultural Marxist terms of autonomous sexual freedom, and even sexual identity. They are the terms of men from Herbert Marcuse to Michel Foucault, the favourites of the philosopher-kings of our day, whose autonomy is declared precisely against the natural family.The critics of this curriculum are right because it is nothing other than an experiment on their children by the children of the sexual revolution. Without any consideration for love or marriage — there is nary a mention of either in this infamous 244 page document — it speaks of sex in the anodyne consumerist terms of choice, of sex without moral, religious or societal consequences.It is the teaching not of a just society, but of a perverted individualism that separates children not only from the values of the parents that bore, love and nurture them, but the idea that they too will one day be responsible for children when this government and its philosopher-kings lie on the ash heap of history.It must not be imposed on the only people whose consent is required, the parents of children in Ontario.National Post-Scott Masson is associate professor of English Literature at Tyndale University College, Toronto.

BRUSSELS, Today, 09:28-Greece and Hungary have endorsed plans for a Russian gas pipeline in the latest blow to EU unity over the Ukraine crisis.Their foreign ministers, Nikos Kotzias and Peter Szijjarto, and counterparts from Serbia, Macedonia, and Turkey added their names to a declaration on the “Turkish Stream” project in Budapest on Tuesday (7 April).The text says they “expressed … support to create a commercially viable option of route and source diversification for delivering natural gas from the Republic of Turkey through the territories of our countries to the countries of Central and South Eastern Europe”.It calls for the EU to co-fund related infrastructure, claiming the pipeline “would … make a significant contribution to the overall energy security of Europe and must therefore be a common responsibility of the European Union”.It also voices interest in “interconnecting the natural gas infrastructures of our countries with European Union financial assistance”.Russian leader Vladimir Putin last year in Ankara said he'll build Turkish Stream, a pipeline under the Black Sea to Turkey, after the EU blocked construction of South Stream, a pipeline under the Black Sea to Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary.He said Turkish Stream will terminate at a new gas trading hub on the Greek-Turkish border.He added that when it’s built, he'll stop supplies to the EU via Ukraine and that if the EU wants the Russian gas it should pay for new infrastructure in south-east Europe.For its part, the European Commission blocked South Stream on grounds it violated EU anti-monopoly laws.Its former energy commissioner, Gunther Oettinger, also criticised it on strategic grounds, saying it would be inappropriate to take part in the project in the context of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.Its current commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, is equally critical of Turkish Stream, which EU diplomats see as a political project designed to weaken Ukraine and increase EU dependence on Russia.

The Budapest communique underlines that it's a statement of “political intent only, and that further exchange of views and dialogue is needed”.The Turkish minister, Bozkir, told Hungarian media that “after the project’s feasibility studies are over, we’ll be able to give it a more qualitative estimate”.The caveats come amid Turkish scepticism that Turkish Stream will be built because Russia lacks money and because its capacity exceeds the region's requirements.“Frankly, nobody in Turkey is taking it very seriously,” a Turkish source told EUobserver shortly after Putin unveiled Turkish Stream in Ankara last year.“In the present climate, the Russians feel isolated. So they have the same reflex as the Iranians used to have - to announce some kind of new project with Turkey, and the whole idea is to show they still have international partners”.

The Budapest meeting represents a blow to EU unity over the Ukraine crisis despite the pipeline’s dim prospects.Russia is courting Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, and Italy as potential veto-wielders on EU plans to extend economic sanctions before they expire in July.The Greek PM, Alexis Tsipras, is to meet Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, following earlier Putin meetings with Cypriot, Hungarian, and Italian leaders.Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, told the Tass news agency on Tuesday that Russia might exempt Greece from Russian sanctions on EU food exports.“We co-operate in agriculture, and we can fix a decline in trade in this sphere linked to the forced introduction [by Russia] of retaliatory measures”, he said.Nikolay Fyodorov, Russia’s agriculture minister, told Tass that Cyprus and Hungary might also get exemptions.Tsipras told Russian media: “I think that the opportunity to strengthen our relationship is associated with tourism, as well as various cultural events”.The Greek energy minister, Panagiotis Lafazanis, said: "I have a feeling that the visit of Alexis Tsipras to Moscow and his meeting with Vladimir Putin may become an important milestone”.“The new chapter in the development of Greek-Russian co-operation, which will also include the Russian gas pipeline on Greek territory, may bring drastic and very positive changes to the political environment and the image of our region and of Europe".

TORONTO - A bird flu outbreak on an Ontario turkey farm is caused by the same virus that has triggered outbreaks in British Columbia and nine U.S. states since late last year, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced Wednesday.The culprit is a highly pathogenic H5N2 virus, said CFIA vice-president Paul Mayers, who noted Canada would inform the World Organization for Animal Health, known as the OIE, about the finding.Under international regulations, countries must notify the OIE when they have outbreaks of highly pathogenic bird flu viruses because these viruses can devastate poultry operations. OIE rules also allow countries to ban poultry imports from affected countries.Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Uruguay have already imposed trade sanctions as a result of the Ontario outbreak and Mayers said more may follow.Ten countries still have in place bans on poultry from Canada because of the British Columbia outbreak, which began in December. Mayers said quarantines have been lifted on all the farms that were affected in that outbreak in the Fraser Valley. But while it appears to be over, Canada had not yet been declared bird-flu free — and now won't be until the Ontario outbreak is extinguished.The outbreak is on an unidentified turkey farm near Woodstock, Ont. Updated numbers for that operation released by CFIA indicate that more than 10,000 birds have died so far. The remaining 34,000 turkeys will be humanely euthanized in an effort to arrest spread of the virus, Mayers said.CFIA has quarantined that farm and eight others which are close by or are deemed at high risk of spread because of contact between the operations. But to date the virus has only been detected on the one farm.The virus is a new hybrid, containing the hemagglutinin gene — the H in a flu virus's name — from an H5N1 virus that has been decimating poultry flocks in Asia since late 2003. The H5N2 virus has a neuraminidase — the N in a flu virus's name — that is found in wild birds in North America.The arrival of a virus containing the Asian H5 gene — first spotted in December — was a surprise. Years of wild bird surveillance suggested there was no mingling of flu viruses between the Eurasian bird flyways and those of the Americas."These highly pathogenic viruses never crossed the big oceans before," said Dr. Ruben Donis, associate director for policy evaluation and preparedness in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's influenza division."This kind of intercontinental transmission of highly pathogenic viruses, this is unprecedented."This H5N2 virus has not yet been seen to have infected people. H5N1 viruses have; the World Health Organization says 784 people in 16 countries are known to have been infected since 2003 and 429 of them have died.But all H5N1 viruses are not identical. They are a family of viruses. And the branch this particular H5 belongs to has not often infected people in Asia, Donis said.However, the virus appears to be well adapted to wild birds. Donis said the virus's spread across North America has traversed the wild bird flyways. First seen in the Pacific flyway — British Columbia, Oregon, Washington and Idaho — it then moved into the Central and Mississippi flyways. VANCOUVER - Passengers on another flight from China to Vancouver are being warned that they may have contracted measles and should get vaccinated if their immunizations are not up to date.Health officials said a person diagnosed with the disease over the weekend exposed passengers on Air China/Air Canada Flight CA 991/AC 6601, which arrived at Vancouver's airport on Saturday.The first flight this year that brought measles to Vancouver from China arrived on March 21.The newest case was contracted on that flight by the person who then returned to China before flying back to Vancouver on April 4, exposing a planeload of people to the disease, said medical health officer Reka Gustafson."We have nine cases in total, all related to that (first) flight," she said Wednesday.There were 300 people on the March flight, but Gustafson said her office couldn't determine how many people were on the later flight.Passengers from the April 4 flight are being advised to watch for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye and a red rash, until April 25.Gustafson urged people to check their immunization history, advising those born after 1970 to ensure they've had two doses of the vaccine.She said people who were unsure about whether they were fully immunized should get vaccinated.The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is available from family doctors, public health units and walk-in clinics.Most people in B.C. have received the MMR vaccine, but the health authority said some young adults and people born outside Canada may not be completely immunized against measles.The incubation period for measles lasts from seven to 21 days, with the average being two weeks, Gustafson said.She said the latest case was discovered early in its gestation, with fewer symptoms." I'm hoping that with early intervention, we will have fewer transmissions." China has had an increase in measles cases this year, despite being a highly vaccinated population, Gustafson said.She said the increase was another indicator of the infectious nature of measles."A single individual with the disease can infect up to 15 to 18 people," she said.Gustafson ruled out screening travellers coming to Canada for measles, saying that would likely be ineffective.She said the number of measles importations is about the same as it was at this time last year."It's important to keep in mind that we've seen outbreaks of measles in the United States and elsewhere in Canada."Gustafson said that in 2014, there were 14 cases of measles reported in Metro Vancouver, most of those were imported to the province.

OTTAWA - Canadian warplanes have bombed their first targets in Syria, Defence Minister Jason Kenney announced online late Wednesday.The milestone event came out via the minister's Twitter account and even seemed to get out ahead of the military, which had not posted news of the strike on its website before it hit social media.Kenney says on Twitter that two CF-18s struck an ISIL garrison in Ar-Raqqah, which is about 160 kilometres east of the embattled city of Aleppo.It is nominally considered the capital of the extremist organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and has been on the receiving end of American air strikes in the past.Kenney provided no other details, other than to say Canada's role in Syria is to help ensure the group has no safe haven.A press release issued by National Defence late Wednesday said the Canadian jets were part of a larger formation of 10 coalition aircraft, including six U.S. warplanes. The nationality of the two remaining aircraft was not disclosed.Since last September, only the U.S. and at least three Persian Gulf countries had been bombing Syria, which has been riven by a brutal four-year-long civil war. None of Canada's Commonwealth allies, including Britain and Australia, are following suit.The Defence Department statement also said that even though Wednesday's bombing was the first airstrike in Syria since the mission expansion, it was not the first air sortie and the previous over flights helped pilots assess the new area."Three previous sorties have taken place over Syria since the Government expanded the CAF's participation in the international coalition against ISIL," said the statement.The air force says all fighter-bombers have returned safely to base.After an acrimonious public debate, the House of Commons last week approved a year-long extension to Canada's combat mission and the expansion of airstrikes into Syria.New Democrats argued against extending the mission, saying that only dictator Bashar al-Assad would benefit from the bombing campaign. UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - North Korea accused Mexico on Wednesday of illegally detaining one of its ships with some 50 crew and warned it would take "necessary measures" to release the vessel, which United Nations sanctions monitors say belongs to a blacklisted shipping firm.The 6,700-tonne freighter Mu Du Bong, which had come from Cuba, ran aground in July on a reef 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Tuxpan in Mexico's Veracruz state. Mexico said the ship remains in the port of Tuxpan.North Korea's Deputy UN Ambassador An Myong Hun told a small news conference on Wednesday that the Mu Du Bong was not linked to the blacklisted firm, Ocean Maritime Management Company, and therefore not subject to U.N. sanctions.He said North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), had paid an undisclosed sum to Mexico for damages to the reef where the ship had run aground and now the ship and its crew should be released."This ship is totally a peaceful and legitimate commercial ship which sails under the direction of the Ministry of Land and Sea Transportation," An said. "The detention of Mu Du Bong is a rampant violation of the dignified sovereignty of the DPRK."" Nova Scotia birds starving because of deep snow-CBC – APR 8,15-YAHOONEWS
Birds in Nova Scotia are having trouble finding food because of the deep snow and frozen ground.Dave Currie, president of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, says he's had lots of calls from people who've found dead or starving birds in their yards."The problem is that they have nowhere to go. The woods and the alder thickets and the normal breeding areas where these birds would be are still full of snow and it's impossible for them to find food because of the icy crust that's below the snow surface," said Currie. "Also, it's just too far for them to get through that snow to get food."Until the snow melts, Currie and Helene Van Doninck, the veterinarian in charge of Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, have suggestions for helping birds in your neighbourhood.- Put berries, grapes and finely shredded apple or jam in a pie plate outside. This will give robins — who don't eat seeds — a burst of energy.- Scatter seeds, which pheasants and other winter birds eat. These species have been doing a bit better, but are still having trouble because of the deep snow cover. - Some have had luck with mashed up hard-boiled egg yolks, spread over the lawn. Watch out for cats, however. Woodcocks fly slowly, which makes them susceptible to predators. Normally they feed in the cover of night, but have been venturing out in the daytime out of desperation.- Van Doninck suggests buying bait worms, such as you'd get for fishing. She says woodcocks and other birds eat insects and worms specifically and may not recognize alternatives like egg or cat food.- Transport weak birds in a dark and warm box, keeping them as calm as possible. Then you could take them to an animal rehabilitation centre.- Shovel clear a patch of your lawn on the south side of your property. This ground is more likely to have less snow and be softer.- Toss around dog hair, lint and yarn scraps. Birds will use these to line their nests. Birds have been flocking to roadsides and foundations of homes where the ground is warmer and possibly clear of snow, as well.Van Doninick said the centre has nine owls in care. She says they were found starving from not finding enough mice under the snow.Early migrants having hardest time.One Nova Scotia Bird Society member in Bedford found a hungry bird Wednesday morning and posted her tale to Facebook.Pamela Gallant said the bird looked "close to death," but she tucked him into a towel-lined box and fed him crushed seed mixed with water."He started to perk up a little bit," said Gallant. "Sadly he didn't make it."Currie wasn't surprised by that outcome."If it's already gone by that point where you can catch it, it's probably too late, and it's likely at a point where it may not survive, even overnight," he said. "But it doesn't hurt to try."The "early migrant" birds are having the toughest time. These are birds such as robins and woodcocks who come to Nova Scotia for the spring. The birds come here to feast on worms and bugs dug out of soft spring ground — an impossible task with the deep snow."It could be that we are now experiencing hopefully the last of the migration for these birds until we can see some of this snow melt and some of the grassy areas bear up some so that they can feed on the ground," said Currie.Currie says he's concerned it could take several years for the woodcock population to rebound.Gallant says she has a bit of good news about birds. A woodcock was poking around a grassy spot of her yard this afternoon, she says, and that was all the motivation she needs to keep an eye out for the birds."Do what you can to help these poor little souls," said Gallant. "Birds especially have so much going against them. So many things can kill a bird so whatever we can do, I think we should."CBC meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has forecast the snow won't fully melt until May.

At least since Plato, philosophers have argued that parents are naturally unfit to educate their children. In an ideal state, philosopher-kings such as he ought to usurp their role. Plato had no children. But the enlightened Rousseau, whose ideas ground modern educational theory, was so enamoured with the idea of the state’s responsibility in administering social justice, and in absolving himself of parental responsibility, that he placed the five children he conceived out of wedlock in state orphanages.In his 1935 BBC radio debate with another statist educator, philosopher Bertrand Russell, G.K. Chesterton wryly retorted what every reasonable person recognizes. The immoral example of exceptional men like Rousseau proves the rule: Parents are by nature best positioned to bring up their children. They don’t raise themselves.The intervention of the Second World War and the rise of Communism briefly settled the matter. Yet the brief success of the ideologues that shared Russell’s conviction in the interim led a nascent UN to push back. In its 1959 Rights of the Child, parents were declared to have primary responsibility in educating their children. The declaration was meant to set a hedge of protection for families against the totalitarian impulse of philosopher-kings. Chesterton might well have called the findings of Cambridge anthropologist J.D. Unwin to his aid. Unwin’s monumental 1934 work Sex and Culture studied 80 primitive tribes and six known civilizations over 5,000 years of history. It strongly correlated the success of a civilization to the degree of sexual restraint it observed: ”Any human society is free to choose either to display great energy or to enjoy sexual freedom; the evidence is that it cannot do both for more than one generation.”The life or death of a civilization, which is at stake in the Christian teaching of natural sexual monogamy — a moral conviction and social institution that Unwin observed was common to all flourishing cultures — would have been a powerful argument in favour of teaching that monogamy was essential to the health of the individual and to creating a more just society.Of course, Chesterton did not make that appeal, largely because he and Russell did not debate the sexual education of children. Theirs was the age-old question of which adults, which individuals capable of moral responsibility, were fit to do the task of creating a just society. Was it parents in the natural family unit, or the experts, the philosopher-kings? This brings us to the Ontario sexual education curriculum, whose convictions on human sexual health are not liberating but deleterious. Once again, the debate lies between parental and state jurisdiction in creating a just society. But at the heart of the Ontario sex-ed curriculum is buried the perverse claim that children raise themselves.This is explicit from the very outset of the curriculum, which commences with the teaching of consent to six-year-olds. To teach children what consent means, even in the rudimentary terms the premier gives of “reading facial expressions and emotions,” is to assume that they have the capacity for moral responsibility to exercise it. This is why the legal age of consent is connected to the moral responsibility of adults. Indeed it must be if a just society is the outcome of education.
By six, the human eye has not even fully developed.The intent of the word, consent, is expressive, to be understood in the cultural Marxist terms of autonomous sexual freedom, and even sexual identity. They are the terms of men from Herbert Marcuse to Michel Foucault, the favourites of the philosopher-kings of our day, whose autonomy is declared precisely against the natural family.The critics of this curriculum are right because it is nothing other than an experiment on their children by the children of the sexual revolution. Without any consideration for love or marriage — there is nary a mention of either in this infamous 244 page document — it speaks of sex in the anodyne consumerist terms of choice, of sex without moral, religious or societal consequences.It is the teaching not of a just society, but of a perverted individualism that separates children not only from the values of the parents that bore, love and nurture them, but the idea that they too will one day be responsible for children when this government and its philosopher-kings lie on the ash heap of history.It must not be imposed on the only people whose consent is required, the parents of children in Ontario.National Post-Scott Masson is associate professor of English Literature at Tyndale University College, Toronto.

The Budapest communique underlines that it's a statement of “political intent only, and that further exchange of views and dialogue is needed”.The Turkish minister, Bozkir, told Hungarian media that “after the project’s feasibility studies are over, we’ll be able to give it a more qualitative estimate”.The caveats come amid Turkish scepticism that Turkish Stream will be built because Russia lacks money and because its capacity exceeds the region's requirements.“Frankly, nobody in Turkey is taking it very seriously,” a Turkish source told EUobserver shortly after Putin unveiled Turkish Stream in Ankara last year.“In the present climate, the Russians feel isolated. So they have the same reflex as the Iranians used to have - to announce some kind of new project with Turkey, and the whole idea is to show they still have international partners”.

TORONTO - A bird flu outbreak on an Ontario turkey farm is caused by the same virus that has triggered outbreaks in British Columbia and nine U.S. states since late last year, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced Wednesday.The culprit is a highly pathogenic H5N2 virus, said CFIA vice-president Paul Mayers, who noted Canada would inform the World Organization for Animal Health, known as the OIE, about the finding.Under international regulations, countries must notify the OIE when they have outbreaks of highly pathogenic bird flu viruses because these viruses can devastate poultry operations. OIE rules also allow countries to ban poultry imports from affected countries.Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Uruguay have already imposed trade sanctions as a result of the Ontario outbreak and Mayers said more may follow.Ten countries still have in place bans on poultry from Canada because of the British Columbia outbreak, which began in December. Mayers said quarantines have been lifted on all the farms that were affected in that outbreak in the Fraser Valley. But while it appears to be over, Canada had not yet been declared bird-flu free — and now won't be until the Ontario outbreak is extinguished.The outbreak is on an unidentified turkey farm near Woodstock, Ont. Updated numbers for that operation released by CFIA indicate that more than 10,000 birds have died so far. The remaining 34,000 turkeys will be humanely euthanized in an effort to arrest spread of the virus, Mayers said.CFIA has quarantined that farm and eight others which are close by or are deemed at high risk of spread because of contact between the operations. VANCOUVER - Passengers on another flight from China to Vancouver are being warned that they may have contracted measles and should get vaccinated if their immunizations are not up to date.Health officials said a person diagnosed with the disease over the weekend exposed passengers on Air China/Air Canada Flight CA 991/AC 6601, which arrived at Vancouver's airport on Saturday.The first flight this year that brought measles to Vancouver from China arrived on March 21.The newest case was contracted on that flight by the person who then returned to China before flying back to Vancouver on April 4, exposing a planeload of people to the disease, said medical health officer Reka Gustafson."We have nine cases in total, all related to that (first) flight," she said Wednesday.There were 300 people on the March flight, but Gustafson said her office couldn't determine how many people were on the later flight.Passengers from the April 4 flight are being advised to watch for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye and a red rash, until April 25.Gustafson urged people to check their immunization history, advising those born after 1970 to ensure they've had two doses of the vaccine.She said people who were unsure about whether they were fully immunized should get vaccinated.The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is available from family doctors, public health units and walk-in clinics.Most people in B.C. have received the MMR vaccine, but the health authority said some young adults and people born outside Canada may not be completely immunized against measles.The incubation period for measles lasts from seven to 21 days, with the average being two weeks, Gustafson said.She said the latest case was discovered early in its gestation, with fewer symptoms." I'm hoping that with early intervention, we will have fewer transmissions." China has had an increase in measles cases this year, despite being a highly vaccinated population, Gustafson said.She said the increase was another indicator of the infectious nature of measles."A single individual with the disease can infect up to 15 to 18 people," she said.Gustafson ruled out screening travellers coming to Canada for measles, saying that would likely be ineffective.She said the number of measles importations is about the same as it was at this time last year."It's important to keep in mind that we've seen outbreaks of measles in the United States and elsewhere in Canada."Gustafson said that in 2014, there were 14 cases of measles reported in Metro Vancouver, most of those were imported to the province.

OTTAWA - Canadian warplanes have bombed their first targets in Syria, Defence Minister Jason Kenney announced online late Wednesday.The milestone event came out via the minister's Twitter account and even seemed to get out ahead of the military, which had not posted news of the strike on its website before it hit social media.Kenney says on Twitter that two CF-18s struck an ISIL garrison in Ar-Raqqah, which is about 160 kilometres east of the embattled city of Aleppo.It is nominally considered the capital of the extremist organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and has been on the receiving end of American air strikes in the past.Kenney provided no other details, other than to say Canada's role in Syria is to help ensure the group has no safe haven.A press release issued by National Defence late Wednesday said the Canadian jets were part of a larger formation of 10 coalition aircraft, including six U.S. warplanes. The nationality of the two remaining aircraft was not disclosed.Since last September, only the U.S. and at least three Persian Gulf countries had been bombing Syria, which has been riven by a brutal four-year-long civil war. Nova Scotia birds starving because of deep snow-CBC – APR 8,15-YAHOONEWS
Birds in Nova Scotia are having trouble finding food because of the deep snow and frozen ground.Dave Currie, president of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, says he's had lots of calls from people who've found dead or starving birds in their yards."The problem is that they have nowhere to go. The woods and the alder thickets and the normal breeding areas where these birds would be are still full of snow and it's impossible for them to find food because of the icy crust that's below the snow surface," said Currie. "Also, it's just too far for them to get through that snow to get food."Until the snow melts, Currie and Helene Van Doninck, the veterinarian in charge of Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, have suggestions for helping birds in your neighbourhood.- Put berries, grapes and finely shredded apple or jam in a pie plate outside. This will give robins — who don't eat seeds — a burst of energy.- Scatter seeds, which pheasants and other winter birds eat. These species have been doing a bit better, but are still having trouble because of the deep snow cover. - Some have had luck with mashed up hard-boiled egg yolks, spread over the lawn. Watch out for cats, however. Woodcocks fly slowly, which makes them susceptible to predators. Normally they feed in the cover of night, but have been venturing out in the daytime out of desperation.- Van Doninck suggests buying bait worms, such as you'd get for fishing. She says woodcocks and other birds eat insects and worms specifically and may not recognize alternatives like egg or cat food.- Transport weak birds in a dark and warm box, keeping them as calm as possible. Then you could take them to an animal rehabilitation centre.- Shovel clear a patch of your lawn on the south side of your property. This ground is more likely to have less snow and be softer.- Toss around dog hair, lint and yarn scraps. Birds will use these to line their nests. Birds have been flocking to roadsides and foundations of homes where the ground is warmer and possibly clear of snow, as well.Van Doninick said the centre has nine owls in care. She says they were found starving from not finding enough mice under the snow.Early migrants having hardest time.One Nova Scotia Bird Society member in Bedford found a hungry bird Wednesday morning and posted her tale to Facebook.Pamela Gallant said the bird looked "close to death," but she tucked him into a towel-lined box and fed him crushed seed mixed with water."He started to perk up a little bit," said Gallant. "Sadly he didn't make it."Currie wasn't surprised by that outcome."If it's already gone by that point where you can catch it, it's probably too late, and it's likely at a point where it may not survive, even overnight," he said. "But it doesn't hurt to try."The "early migrant" birds are having the toughest time. These are birds such as robins and woodcocks who come to Nova Scotia for the spring. The birds come here to feast on worms and bugs dug out of soft spring ground — an impossible task with the deep snow."It could be that we are now experiencing hopefully the last of the migration for these birds until we can see some of this snow melt and some of the grassy areas bear up some so that they can feed on the ground," said Currie.Currie says he's concerned it could take several years for the woodcock population to rebound.Gallant says she has a bit of good news about birds. A woodcock was poking around a grassy spot of her yard this afternoon, she says, and that was all the motivation she needs to keep an eye out for the birds."Do what you can to help these poor little souls," said Gallant. "Birds especially have so much going against them. So many things can kill a bird so whatever we can do, I think we should."CBC meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has forecast the snow won't fully melt until May.
