To date, 48 bodies have been recovered. 36 have been identified, while 12 are still being identified. 11.06AM: "100 per cent of the things we need are now in our hands," Tatang Kurniadi, head of the National Transport Safety Committee, which will investigate the accident, told reporters after the cockpit voice recorder was lifted to the surface earlier today.

He added that focus of the operation shifted on the 11th day when the black box was found, but the search for bodies continued.BASARNAS was focused on finding bodies, while the armed forces was focused on finding fuselage, said Soelistyo.When asked about the chances of finding more bodies, BASARNAS said it is harder to find bodies underwater than on the surface. SURABAYA, Indonesia: The head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) has assured families with loved ones on board flight QZ8501 that daily search operations will continue, even after joint search operations cease.Air Chief Marshall FH Bambang Soelistyo flew into Surabaya on Tuesday (Jan 13) to update family members on the "realities" ahead and to prepare them for the scaling back of search operations "soon"."I told them, closing down of the main operations doesn't mean the search is over - it will only look different. If there is a joint operation now, next there will be the daily operations by BASARNAS," he said.Thus far, 48 bodies of the 162 people on board the AirAsia Surabaya-Singapore flight have been recovered. Family members were at times emotional when asking Bambang for answers on what was holding up the search."It's not very simple to find a crashed aircraft underwater," he told one family member, assuring her that every effort was being made to find those on board the ill-fated plane.Many family members waiting at the crisis centre in Surabaya have found it difficult to give their loved ones a proper send-off without any remains.The brother of passenger Gani Chandra, Franky, pleaded for search teams to not give up. ""We have made all sorts of preparations for my brother, beginning with his grave and more," he said. "We are still thankful to all the teams who have been working hard for us. We are just asking them to keep at it a little bit longer, because we are getting close to the fuselage, we're confident."Other family members, such as the father of passenger Donna Indah, have reluctantly accepted they may never see their loved ones again."It's not up to us when they should stop searching," said Imam Sampoerno. "At the end of the day, authorities are putting in maximum effort to find the bodies. The weather, the situation, is not always conducive. SURABAYA: Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) officials are facing several challenges in identifying the bodies recovered from AirAsia QZ8501. One of the issues is incomplete ante-mortem data such as fingerprints or dental records.Many of the bodies now being discovered no longer have fingerprints or recognisable physical features. DVI officials must turn to either DNA samples or dental records to accurately verify and identity an individual.Budiyono, head of East Java Disaster Victim Identification, said: "Many have asked me why we're announcing identified bodies in small batches. That's not our intention. In fact, we are facing difficulties matching ante-mortem and post-mortem data."The bodies that we're handling are severely decomposed. But our DVI team is continuously working on them - thus we've been able to identify some each day."Identifying bodies is a painstaking process, as each body that comes in to the morgue, must be compared to the ante-mortem data of the other 162 people on board QZ8501. Ante-mortem data include fingerprints, dental records, DNA samples, physical features and the last clothes worn by the deceased. Forensic orthodontology expert A Fauzi, from the Indonesian National Police, said: "Teeth is one of the body's hardest parts which can take trauma. However if it is submerged in sea water, it can decompose quickly. So far, most of the teeth are in their sockets. But in situations where they are submerged in sea water for a long time, they can be dislocated from the sockets."DVI officials have been working long hours to find matches as incomplete ante-mortem data have proven to be a major challenge. The officials are now taking a proactive approach in completing the ante-mortem data of the remaining unidentified passengers.Instead of waiting for relatives to come forward, the officials have travelled to locations as diverse as the metropolis of Jakarta and a remote village on Leti island, 30 hours away by sea from Ambon, to get the data they need for a full ante-mortem profile. PANGKALAN BUN: Indonesian divers on Tuesday (Jan 13) retrieved the cockpit voice recorder from beneath the wreckage of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea as the airline's boss vowed to overcome the "toughest times" he has known.It came a day after the plane's other black box, the flight data recorder, was recovered. The devices should provide investigators with vital information about what caused the accident.Flight QZ8501 went down on Dec 28 in stormy weather as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board.Just 48 bodies have so far been recovered, with many believed to be in the main section of fuselage, which has not yet been found.Indonesia's meteorological agency has said that the bad weather likely caused the Airbus A320-200 to crash but a definitive answer is impossible without the data recorders.Rescuers have faced a lengthy, difficult search often hampered by bad weather but a key breakthrough came at the weekend when they finally detected "ping" signals from the black boxes.On Tuesday an official involved with the search, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the cockpit voice recorder "has been found and lifted from the sea". The official added that the device had been taken to the navy ship Banda Aceh.The device had been about 32m under water, beneath a wing. It was not far from the first black box but took longer to retrieve as it was trapped under heavy wreckage.The flight data recorder monitors information such as airspeed, while the cockpit voice recorder stores radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit. Both are located near the rear of the plane and designed to survive underwater. The accident is the first major setback for Malaysia-based AirAsia, which has enjoyed a 13-year run of success. In a message to customers, flamboyant boss Tony Fernandes said that "the past few weeks have been the most difficult weeks of my life since starting AirAsia". But he pledged to get through the crisis: "Even in our toughest times, we will continue to be the world's best and be better for you."

HUNT FOR MAIN BODY

S B Supriyadi, a rescue agency official coordinating the hunt for the plane, said the international search effort, which has included US and Chinese ships, would now focus on finding the main body of the aircraft. "We must get to the fuselage and retrieve the rest of the victims," he said. "We will try hard to recover them and return them to their families."The flight data recorder, which officials have said is in good condition, was flown to Jakarta on Monday night. Indonesia's National Transport Safety Committee said the boxes would undergo a lengthy analysis in the capital. Suryanto Cahyono, a senior investigator from the committee, told AFP that it would take about a week to download the data before analysis could begin.He said French experts from Airbus were in Jakarta to help with the analysis, and experts from countries whose citizens were involved in the crash would also assist. The committee has said a preliminary report on the accident will be produced within a month, and a final report after a year.Officials on Monday revealed dramatic new details of the accident, saying a rapid change in pressure caused the plane to break apart as it hit the water."It exploded because of the pressure," Supriyadi told reporters in Pangkalan Bun on Borneo island, the search headquarters. "The cabin was pressurised and before the pressure of the cabin could be adjusted, it went down - boom. That explosion was heard in the area."The tail of the plane, with its red AirAsia logo, was lifted out of the water on Saturday using giant balloons and a crane. It was brought by tugboat on Sunday to a port near Pangkalan Bun.All but seven of those on board the flight were Indonesian. The bodies of a South Korean couple were identified on Sunday, but their 11-month-old baby remains unaccounted for.The other foreigners were one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one Briton and a Frenchman - co-pilot Remi Plesel. SURABAYA, 12TH JANUARY 2015 – Entering the sixteenth day, the SAR operations led by the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) Republic of Indonesia has made a breakthrough with the recovery of QZ 8501 aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR) at 07:11HRS LT (GMT+7) today.

BASARNAS confirmed that the FDR was found under the plane’s wing wreckage and has been lifted from the seafloor (up to 30 meters below surface). The FDR will be transferred to Jakarta, and handed over to Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) for investigation. BASARNAS reported that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has yet to be located and is still being searched around the area.In addition, sea divers from SAR team were deployed today to obtain visual confirmation of two large objects which are suspected to be parts of the aircraft, approximately 4km from the location where the tail piece was found.BASARNAS also assured that passengers recovery remains to be the main priority. Local fishermen have been asked to support SAR operation on a smaller scale. No additional recoveries were reported today.In Surabaya, the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Police Department of Republic of Indonesia (DVI POLRI) today announced that they were able to identify 2 more remains, identified as: David Gunawan (male) and Youvita Elisabeth (female).
