His Guatemalan mother repeated this phrase to him time and time again, until she was arrested and deported following the most controversial anti-immigration raid in the history of their country. The boy’s story, along with the silent cries of so many other Hispanics, reached Pope Francis thanks to Luis Argueta, a film director born and raised in Guatemala.Argueta gave the Pope two copies of his documentaries “AbUSAdos” (a play on words in Spanish, with the words abused and USA) and “Abrazos” (Embraces) when he greeted him in St. Peter’s Square on 10 December. Both documentaries illustrate the paradoxes of the failed US immigration system, with crude realism.“As I was preparing to come to Rome, I kept on asking myself: What shall I tell the Pope? What shall I tell him? A little boy, Pedrito gave me the answer. He said to me: Tell him what my mother always told me: that immigrants leave everything behind but the faith,” the film director said in an interview with Vatican Insider.Pedro is one of the main characters in “AbUSAdos”, which documents the consequences of the Potsville raid, in the US state of Iowa. On 12 May 2008, more than 900 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in armoured vehicles and helicopters, arrested 389 people, most of them from Guatemala and Mexico. Numerous criminal charges were made against them, including identity theft. They were deported just three weeks later. He could not believe that a police operation of this kind needed to be mounted in order to arrest some simple workers, even though they were illegal. He decided to go on a four-day visit to Potsville. Initially his idea was to film five or six interviews and upload them to the internet so he could add them to his film collection “Las voces del silencio” (Silent voices). But the journey ended up changing his life.“I am a man who did not have much room for faith in his life; I realise now that migrants gave me faith, they opened up my heart and gave me the chance to believe. That first visit turned my life around and now I devote my time to telling migrants’ stories,” he confessed. What had started off as one brief visit, turned into 27 visits.With his video camera he captured the fear, mistrust, arrogance, abuse, inability to understand and the injustice surrounding the immigration phenomenon in the US. “Everyone knew there were undocumented workers in Potsville but no one talked about it, it was better that way,” said one of the many individuals interviewed for the documentary. “People need to know about this!” Argueta thought. So once he finished shooting “AbUSAdos”, he toured the country, visiting universities, schools, community and social centres. He organised debates and group discussions. In Worthington, a city in Minnesota, he met Lisa Kremer, a Catholic activist and founder of Familias juntas (Families Together), an organization that helps children meet for the first time their families in Guatemala.The second documentary, “Abrazos”, was inspired on this woman’s experience. It captures the emotions of a number of children who were born in the US and travelled to Guatemala to meet family members for the first time. Their parents had never been able to take them due to legal problems.The Guatemalan film director said his documentaries are not only intended as a form of protest but also aim to spread awareness, inspired - in some way - by Pope Francis’ “culture of encounter”.This is why he is already working on a third film, which will tell the stories of US citizens who help migrants. vatican city- “Migrants leave everything behind but the faith”. This is the most valuable lesson Pedro Arturo López Vega has ever learnt. Pedro is a young boy who was born in the United States. His Guatemalan mother repeated this phrase to him time and time again, until she was arrested and deported following the most controversial anti-immigration raid in the history of their country. The boy’s story, along with the silent cries of so many other Hispanics, reached Pope Francis thanks to Luis Argueta, a film director born and raised in Guatemala.Argueta gave the Pope two copies of his documentaries “AbUSAdos” (a play on words in Spanish, with the words abused and USA) and “Abrazos” (Embraces) when he greeted him in St. Peter’s Square on 10 December. Both documentaries illustrate the paradoxes of the failed US immigration system, with crude realism.“As I was preparing to come to Rome, I kept on asking myself: What shall I tell the Pope? What shall I tell him? A little boy, Pedrito gave me the answer. He said to me: Tell him what my mother always told me: that immigrants leave everything behind but the faith,” the film director said in an interview with Vatican Insider.Pedro is one of the main characters in “AbUSAdos”, which documents the consequences of the Potsville raid, in the US state of Iowa. On 12 May 2008, more than 900 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in armoured vehicles and helicopters, arrested 389 people, most of them from Guatemala and Mexico. Numerous criminal charges were made against them, including identity theft. They were deported just three weeks later. The operation cost 5, 2 million dollars.Argueta read about this in New York, where he lives and works. He could not believe that a police operation of this kind needed to be mounted in order to arrest some simple workers, even though they were illegal. He decided to go on a four-day visit to Potsville. Initially his idea was to film five or six interviews and upload them to the internet so he could add them to his film collection “Las voces del silencio” (Silent voices). But the journey ended up changing his life.“I am a man who did not have much room for faith in his life; I realise now that migrants gave me faith, they opened up my heart and gave me the chance to believe. That first visit turned my life around and now I devote my time to telling migrants’ stories,” he confessed. What had started off as one brief visit, turned into 27 visits.With his video camera he captured the fear, mistrust, arrogance, abuse, inability to understand and the injustice surrounding the immigration phenomenon in the US. “Everyone knew there were undocumented workers in Potsville but no one talked about it, it was better that way,” said one of the many individuals interviewed for the documentary. “People need to know about this!” Argueta thought. So once he finished shooting “AbUSAdos”, he toured the country, visiting universities, schools, community and social centres. He organised debates and group discussions. In Worthington, a city in Minnesota, he met Lisa Kremer, a Catholic activist and founder of Familias juntas (Families Together), an organization that helps children meet for the first time their families in Guatemala.The second documentary, “Abrazos”, was inspired on this woman’s experience. It captures the emotions of a number of children who were born in the US and travelled to Guatemala to meet family members for the first time. Their parents had never been able to take them due to legal problems.The Guatemalan film director said his documentaries are not only intended as a form of protest but also aim to spread awareness, inspired - in some way - by Pope Francis’ “culture of encounter”.This is why he is already working on a third film, which will tell the stories of US citizens who help migrants. It is going to be titled “La vuelta en U” (The U-turn) and will describe cases of migrants who managed to get the “U” visa which is given to undocumented individuals who have been the victims of crimes and are willing to work with local law enforcement.“I want to touch people’s hearts and change their mindsets. The only way to achieve this is to come face to face with migrants and get to know them as human beings, putting ourselves in their shoes and losing the fear we have towards them. This is what happens with US Americans and also with Guatemalans, we are unaware of their contributions and form false beliefs about them. We have to educate each other,” he noted.He then added: “The Church can play a decisive role in helping achieve immigration reform in the United States. The Lutherans and the Baptists as well as the Catholic Church, have included this issue in their pastoral agendas. The children of migrants are the key today. They are US citizens and they are the present and the future of the country. People should be interested in speaking out about the importance of not breaking families up, about these outcries.”
