We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only question is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent.James Paul Warburg appearing before the Senate on 7th February 1950

Like a famous WWII Belgian General,Paul Henry Spock said in 1957:We need no commission, we have already too many. What we need is a man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.

DANIEL 7:23-25
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast (EU,REVIVED ROME) shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,(7TH WORLD EMPIRE) which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.(TRADING BLOCKS-10 WORLD REGIONS/TRADE BLOCS)
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings(10 NATIONS-10 WORLD DIVISION WORLD GOVERNMENT) that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.(TAKE OVER 3 WORLD REGIONS)

Centre-right leaders to pick top EU commission candidate

Today @ 09:27-MAR 6,14-EUOBSERVER
By Valentina Pop
Dublin - European centre right leaders are gathering in Dublin on Thursday and Friday (6-7 March) to select their top candidate for the post of European Commission President. With the Ukraine crisis taking over the EU agenda and an EU emergency summit on the issue taking place on Thursday in Brussels, the Dublin congress of the European People's Party (EPP) is only due to start later this evening (6 March).Ukrainian opposition leaders Yulia Tymoshenko and Vitali Klitschko, as well as the newly elected Prime Minister, Arsenyi Yatsenuk, are also expected to attend and speak at the EPP congress – a sign of support and recognition from Europe's largest political family.Turning to the EU elections on Friday, EPP leaders are set to pick the lead candidate for the EPP – a politician who will appear in televised debates with the top candidates of other political families and possibly have a chance to become the next EU commission president.According to the Lisbon Treaty that came into force in 2009, government leaders must "take into account" the result of the EU elections when deciding on the Commission President. This novelty was aimed at making the European Parliament election campaign more engaging and stop the continuously declining turnout trend. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel – seen as the most powerful leader in the EPP group – has already indicated she sees "no automaticity" between the election result and the person to succeed Jose Manuel Barroso at the helm of the EU commission. And the EPP is indeed the last political family to nominate its candidate. It has two candidates to choose from: ex-Eurogroup chief and former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and internal market commissioner Michel Barnier. A third, the so-called Baltic candidate, former Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, withdrew his candidacy on Wednesday evening. (5 March).Juncker, who will turn 60 this year, is tipped as frontrunner. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister in the EU until his resignation last year over failure to control the domestic intelligence service which allegedly was engaged in illegal wiretapping, corruption and stolen cars. The Luxembourg politician is from the same political generation as former Commission President Jacques Delors and former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, both key figures in the 1980s and 1990s. He has openly admitted that he favours "secret, dark debates" rather than too much transparency. As former Eurogroup chief and member of the EU council, Juncker was instrumental in the way eurozone leaders and finance ministers managed the euro-crisis – notably the bailouts of Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain and the accompanying austerity measures.
Another 'veteran' in EU politics is Barnier – a former MEP, commissioner for regional policy, French agriculture, foreign and Europe minister, and currently commissioner for internal market and financial services.Barnier, who is 63, would be a surprise winner because his country, France, has a Social-Democrat government and no prominent politicians to support him within the EPP.

Far-left surge to outnumber Liberals in EU elections, suggests poll

05.03.14 @ 18:19-EUOBSERVER
By Benjamin Fox
BRUSSELS - Europe's far-left are set to outnumber the Liberals in the next European Parliament, according to a pan-EU opinion poll published on Wednesday (5 March). In the second of a series of fortnightly forecasts in the three months before Europe's 400 million voters go to the ballot booths from 22-25 May, Pollwatch Europe forecasts that the Parliament's leftist GUE group would see its number of MEPs swell to 67 seats and become the third largest group in the assembly. For their part, the Liberals would be reduced to 61 seats, well down on the 85 seats they secured five years ago.The poll, which is based on national surveys from all 28 EU countries, is the latest indication that the Liberals will lose their status as the Parliament's 'kingmakers'.Studies of Parliament votes since 2009 have revealed that the centrist group has been on the winning side on 85 percent of votes, more than any other party group.Europe's establishment parties are widely expected to suffer their worst performance since direct elections were introduced for the Parliament in 1979, with the EPP also anticipated to suffer heavy losses. The EPP, Liberal and Socialist groups would account for 63 percent of the votes, according to the poll, down from 73 percent in 2009, as record numbers of voters back populist parties on the right and left following the eurozone crisis.Alexis Tsipras, who is the left's candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, and his Syriza party are on course to top the poll in Greece in May's elections, while strong performances are also likely for the Portuguese Left Bloc and the recently launched Italian Tsipras List.Meanwhile, the new poll also predicts that German neo-Nazi party, the National Democrats, will be among several minor parties to win seats in the European Parliament for the first time in May.In Karlsruhe last week, the German constitutional court scrapped the 3 percent threshold needed for parties to win parliamentary seats. The ruling is set to open the door to several other parties, including the anti-copyright Pirate party and Free Voters party, with Professor Simon Hix of the London School of Economics, and chairman of Pollwatch, estimating that around 270,000 total votes will be enough for a seat in Germany. The anti-euro Alternative for Germany(AfD) is also expected to benefit from the court ruling. The poll has the centre-right European People's party narrowing the gap on the rival Socialists to a near dead-heat, winning 209 and 202 of the Parliament's 751 seats respectively, on near identical vote shares of 28 percent and 27 percent respectively. The previous Pollwatch survey two weeks ago had put the Socialists 19 seats ahead.

Seized arms ship to dock in Eilat Saturday

IDF general says there is ‘clear and unequivocal’ evidence that shipment came from Iran

March 6, 2014, 1:16 pm 0-The Times of Israel
JERUSALEM — A ship allegedly carrying advanced rockets from Iran to Gaza that was intercepted by the Israeli navy will reach the port of Eilat on Saturday evening, the military said.“This ship, which was transporting dozens of M302-type rockets with a range of 150 to 200 kilometers (more than 100 miles) is currently north of Port Sudan and will arrive in Eilat on Saturday evening,” Brigadier General Motti Almoz told military radio Thursday.“The ship may be carrying other weapons as well but we can only know this when it reaches Eilat,” he said, referring to the resort city at the southernmost tip of Israel.“There is clear and unequivocal information that this (shipment) came from Iran,” he said, without giving further details.Major General Aviv Kochavi, head of military intelligence, was to give a news conference on the ship later Thursday. The military has said it was carrying rockets “capable of striking anywhere in Israel.”Israel intercepted the “Klos-C” in the Red Sea between Eritrea and Sudan on Wednesday, claiming that Syrian-made weapons aboard had been shipped overland to Iran then onward by sea, with the aim of reaching militants in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.Speaking in California, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the discovery revealed “the true face of Iran” in a rebuke aimed at world powers who are negotiating with Tehran over its nuclear program.Israel has long accused Iran and Syria of providing military aid to Hezbollah and to Palestinian terrorist groups. But an Iranian military official denied the allegations regarding Wednesday’s shipment, saying they were “totally without foundation,” according to a report by Iran’s Arabic-language Al-Alam television channel. The announcement about the ship was made just hours after Israel said its troops had fired at two Hezbollah fighters in Syria as they tried to plant a bomb close to the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights. On February 24, Israeli warplanes reportedly bombed a Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon near the Syrian border, in what would be the first air strikes against the Shiite militant group in Lebanon since the 2006 war.Hezbollah blamed the air strikes on Israel and vowed to retaliate.

The true face of the press

Toadies and parrots inhabit Hebrew papers Thursday, as giddiness over the capture of an Iranian arms shipment runs rampant

March 6, 2014, 1:48 pm 0-The Times of Israel
The capture of an Iranian arms shipment to Gaza in the Red Sea by Israeli commandos Wednesday holds the fascination of the Hebrew print press Thursday, which is in turns fawning and coolly detached. If you are into slobbering over Israel’s military might, look no further than Yedioth Ahronoth and Israel Hayom, which, along with the IDF, are giddy as schoolgirls over the capture of the ship, at least judging by their lead headlines. “Naval Commando raid in the high seas,” screams out the meaningless Yedioth Ahronoth headline, while Israel Hayom goes with the more subtle “Our forces at their best.”And as if that weren’t enough adulation, the paper’s front page is also adorned with a series of pictures of political and military leaders during the raid, strangely numbered in a seeming bid to give the (false) impression that the army didn’t step into action before getting a call from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in LA.Haaretz and Maariv, however, skip the toadying and hop straight to the real heart of the matter, Israel’s attempt to use the shipment to discredit Iran as part of an ongoing PR battle. (For a fun game, try counting how many times the phrase “true face of Iran” is used in the press. It’s like counting the stars in the sky.)Both papers lead with the fact that stopping the missiles was just icing on the cake compared to what the revelation will do to Iran’s reputation. Haaretz, in fact, skips the whole drama on the high seas in its headline, instead reporting that Israel will up its efforts to push the West on ramping up pressure on Tehran. The paper unhelpfully declines to include actual information backing that claim in its story though, instead just reporting that Israeli leaders hope the shipment will help in their battle against Iran in the high conference tables of Geneva, which is not the same thing. The paper’s Amos Harel parrots the IDF line, that stopping the missiles prevented a “game-changer,” and never mind the fact that Gaza already showed it can hit Tel Aviv last year.“The trickle of smuggled weapons from Iran and, more important, developments in local weapons manufacture, especially in the past year, have given Hamas and Islamic Jihad limited capability to hit greater Tel Aviv. Had the Klos-C reached its destination, that capability would have greatly increased. That would have forced Israel to rethink its deterrence strategy and to think twice before taking military action in the Gaza Strip,” he writes. In Maariv, Amir Rapaport notes that exposing Iran was important enough to risk the dangerous sea operation, instead of just hitting the shipment from the sky and doing away with the missiles that way.“The fact that the navy planned a complicated operation, 1,500 kilometers from home, that could have gone awry, that took months of planning, instead of a less dangerous airstrike, can be explained by the fact that in the current situation, it’s preferable to catch the weapons and discredit Iran over destroying the arms. Thus the military operation in Africa was part of a diplomatic effort against Iran, and the PR efforts will expand even before the ship reaches Eilat.”Just how dangerous was the naval adventure? Former Navy commander Eliezer Marom writes in Yedioth that there were many chances for things to go wrong.“The operation itself was planned for very far away – more than 1,000 kilometers from Israel – and demanded exact preparation and long and secret deployment of a large force to the contact point with the ship. The duration of the operation, its distance from Israel and the need to remain hidden and secret entailed many risks, which the forces overcame, and the operation proves the high level of operational capability among the fighters and commanders.”In Israel Hayom eternal optimist Yoav Limor notes that though the operation exposed, yes, the true face of Iran, the world will continue to refuse to see, yes, the true of face of Iran.“As of yesterday the threat was prevented. And still, the past shows us that Iran will learn lessons from this, and try to find new smuggling routes to fronts in the north and the south. And given the fact that the world refuses to get excited over the smoking gun that was caught yesterday, Israel will be expected to stand alone with this threat again in the future.”Speaking of other fronts, Yedioth marks International day of the Woman by reporting that the war for gender equality in the workplace is not going so well. The paper reports, based on new figures released by the state, that women make less money than men and get passed over for promotions despite being better educated.Activist Galia Willoch writes in the paper that the problem is both in the workplace and at home. “There’s no doubt that women, who enter the market in the masses yet continue to be the primary caregiver for their children, are more exposed to the daily work-parenting conflict. That is exactly the reason that what’s being done for mothers in the workplace is not enough. The time has come to address the division of labor in the home and in the family.”In Haaretz, Ari Shavit tackles Netanyahu’s appearance at AIPAC two days earlier, with the decidedly non-American writer opining that the Israeli leader is out of touch of the conversation happening in America:“When Netanyahu is getting high on the sweeping support of the American Jewish establishment, he is disconnected from reality. He has no idea where the new America stands, and he has no idea where young Jews stand. He doesn’t understand what’s happening at the universities where he himself studied. The first Israeli prime minister to speak perfect English speaks 1970s- and 1980s-era American.”

ISAIAH 17:1,11-14
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
11  In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
12  Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations,(USELESS U.N) that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13  The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14  And behold at evening tide trouble; and before the morning he is not.(ASSAD KILLED IN OVERNIGHT RAID) This is the portion of them that spoil us,(ISRAEL) and the lot of them that rob us.

In UN complaint, Syria says Israel fired on mosque, school

President Assad claims Israel is coordinating with opposition, planning to build fence along Golan border

March 6, 2014, 2:05 pm 0-The times of Israel
Damascus on Thursday filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council over Israeli fire into Syrian territory a day earlier. In a letter to the president of the council and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Syria claimed Israel fired at a mosque and a school near the demilitarized zone separating the two countries, injuring seven soldiers and four civilians.According to Israel Radio, the Syrian Army warned the IDF against attempts to test its capabilities.Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday accused Israel of cooperating with Syrian rebel factions to tip the balance of power in the demilitarized zone.“The situation in Syria is under control. The danger is elsewhere,” Assad said in an interview. “It lies in the Israeli plan to set up [a fence] near or close to the occupied Golan Heights. They plan for this fence to be under the control of terrorists, in a similar set-up to the one in southern Lebanon by Israeli occupation.”According to Assad, rebel factions have struck Syrian forces on Israel’s instruction and have been coordinating with Israel in taking positions in the demilitarized zone along the Golan Heights border in order to remove Syrian army forces.“There’s nothing new in cooperation between the armed groups and Israel,” he said. “Not only in the mutual goals of the outcome of the war, but also in specific operations like fighting against sectors of the Syrian Arab army prepared to confront the Israelis, and also the attacks on air defense sites, occurred through Israeli instructions.”“Insurgents are flowing in unprecedented numbers from Jordanian territory to Hamma, a demilitarized zone, according to the separation of forces agreement between Syria and Israel,” he said. “An area where forces of Syria or Israel shouldn’t be. But the terrorists have been rounded up in that area for training by request of the occupation, and therefore they represent an extension of [the occupation].”
While Israel has not officially taken sides in the Syrian civil war, Assad’s accusations are not the first from the Syrian government that Israel is involved in the conflict. In a television interview with a Hezbollah-linked channel late Monday, Syrian presidential adviser Buthaina Shaaban claimed IDF officers were physically present in Syria to monitor the fighting and call in troops to assist the opposition.Shaaban also called on Jordan to control rebel traffic into Syria. There have also been a number of incidents where Israel has retaliated against fire from Syrian territory as well as several recent confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah in connection with the Lebanese terror organization’s relationship with Syria and role in the conflict. On Wednesday, IDF forces spotted and killed two terrorists who belonged to an organization affiliated with Hezbollah trying to plant explosives on the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights early Wednesday morning, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s office.Israel has been bracing for a possible Hezbollah attack since the Lebanese Shiite terror group said last Wednesday that it had been hit by Israeli planes near the Syrian border earlier in the week.Jerusalem has not confirmed involvement in the reported strike, though a high-ranking official told Time magazine that the Israel Defense Forces was behind the attack.Lebanese sources said that Hezbollah was responsible for firing two Katyusha rockets that struck the Golan Heights on Saturday. The rockets, which hit open areas in northern Israel overnight, were said to be retribution for the strike attributed to Israel near the Lebanon-Syria border last Monday.Last week, Israel put its own troops on the northern border with Lebanon on high alert, shortly after Hezbollah threatened retaliation.Hezbollah has acknowledged it was attacked by Israel and warned that it would strike back when and where it deemed appropriate. The organization’s chief, Hassan Nasrallah, warned key military personnel of the possibility of war with the Jewish state, a Lebanese journalist with close ties to Hezbollah said last week. The Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences;(BIOLOGICAL/CHEMICAL/NUCLEAR) and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

NASA plots daring flight to Jupiter's watery moon

WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA is plotting a daring robotic mission to Jupiter's watery moon Europa, a place where astronomers speculate there might be some form of life. The space agency set aside $15 million in its 2015 budget proposal to start planning some kind of mission to Europa. No details have been decided yet, but NASA chief financial officer Elizabeth Robinson said Tuesday that it would be launched in the mid-2020s.Robinson said the high radiation environment around Jupiter and distance from Earth would be a challenge. When NASA sent Galileo to Jupiter in 1989, it took the spacecraft six years to get to the fifth planet from the sun.Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute astronomer Laurie Leshin said it could be "a daring mission to an extremely compelling object in our solar system."Past NASA probes have flown by Europa, especially Galileo, but none have concentrated on the moon, one of dozens orbiting Jupiter. Astronomers have long lobbied for a mission to Europa, but proposals would have cost billions of dollars.Last year, scientists discovered liquid plumes of water shooting up through Europa's ice. Flying through those watery jets could make Europa cheaper to explore than just circling it or landing on the ice, said NASA Europa scientist Robert Pappalardo.NASA will look at many competing ideas for a Europa mission, so the agency doesn't know how big or how much it will cost, Robinson said. She said a major mission goal would be searching for life in the strange liquid water under the ice-covered surface.Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb said going to Europa would be more exciting than exploring dry Mars: "There might be fish under the ice."

FALSE POPE FROM THE VATICAN

REVELATION 13:11-13
11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;(FALSE VATICAN POPE) and he had two horns like a lamb,(JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD) and he spake as a dragon.(HES SATANICALLY INSPIRED,HES A CHRISTIAN DEFECTOR FROM THE FAITH)
12 And he (FALSE RELIGIOUS LEADER) exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him,(WORLD DICTATOR) and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.(THE WORLD DICTATOR CREATES A FALSE RESURRECTION AND IS CROWNED LEADER OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER).
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

REVELATION 17:1-5,9,15-18
1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication,(VATICAN IN POLITICS) and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman (FALSE CHURCH) was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,(VATICAN COLOURS)(ANOTHER REASON WE KNOW THE FALSE POPE COMES FROM THE VATICAN) and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Francis’ name appears in the list along with Putin and Snowden’s

vatican insider staff Rome Pope Francis has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, along with such figures as Vladimir Putin. The Russian president appears in the long list of candidates despite his involvement in the Ukrainian crisis. The Nobel Institute's director, Geir Lundestad, announced the 278 names.

A part from the Pope and the Kremlin leader, other names on the list include ex-NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden and Malafa Yousafzai, the young Pakistani woman who was attacked by the Taleban for her efforts in support of education for women. 47 of the 278 candidates are organisations.Although the commission will not reveal the identity of the nominees yet, sponsors can choose to publish their names, as is the case with Putin, whose name is being put forward by Russian representatives for the role he played in preventing an armed attack against Damascus. They are also backing him for his efforts to ensure Bashar al-Assad’s chemical arsenal was placed under international control.

Pope very popular in United States, but no 'Francis effect': poll

Reuters
(Reuters) - One year after his election, Pope Francis is "immensely popular among American Catholics," a survey said on Thursday, but there is no sign of a "Francis effect" inspiring more to attend Mass or do volunteer work. The Washington-based Pew Research Center said 85 percent of Catholics in the United States viewed the Argentine-born pontiff favorably, with 51 percent reporting a "very favourable" view of him, while only 4 percent expressed a negative opinion.Among Catholics, 68 percent thought he represented "a major change for the better," a view shared by 51 percent of the non-Catholics responding to the poll in telephone interviews of 1,340 Americans from February 14 to 23.But the poll also found the rock-star status of the pope, whose simple style has attracted record crowds to the Vatican and won Time magazine's Man of the Year title for 2013, has not clearly translated into greater lay participation in the church since his surprise election on March 13, 2013."There has been no measurable rise in the percentage of Americans who identify as Catholic," the survey said. "Nor has there been a statistically significant change in how often Catholics say they go to Mass."Forty percent of Catholics said they were now praying more often and 26 percent were "more excited" about their faith, but their frequency of going to confession or volunteering at church has not changed.
RISING EXPECTATIONS
"If there has been a 'Francis effect', it has been most pronounced among Catholics who already were highly committed to the practice of their faith," the survey concluded.Francis's 85 percent favourable rating lags behind the 93 percent the late Pope John Paul scored in 1990 and 1996. Pope Emeritus Benedict's rating reached 83 percent in 2008, just after his only visit to the United States, but it was mostly in the 70s.
The survey said women were slight more favourable to Francis than men and Catholics aged 40 and older were more likely to have a very favourable view than younger believers who came of age under the more dogmatic popes John Paul and Benedict.Pope Francis's openness to reforming some Church doctrines seems to have raised U.S. Catholics' expectations of fundamental changes in coming decades, judging by responses to the poll. The biggest jump concerned allowing the now celibate clergy to marry. Some 51 percent thought priests would be able to marry by 2050, compared to 39 percent who thought that a year ago. Some 56 percent expect artificial birth control to be allowed by 2050, a slight rise from 53 percent last year, and 42 percent expected to see women priests, up from 37 percent."Regardless of their expectations about what the Church will do, large majorities of Catholics say the Church should allow Catholics to use birth control (77 percent), allow priests to get married (72 percent) and ordain women as priests (68 percent)," the survey wrote."Half of Catholics say the Church should recognise the marriages of gay and lesbian couples," it added.
SOME DISAPPOINTMENT
These responses were roughly in line with results reported in Germany and several other European countries last month to a Vatican survey on sexual morality being taken for a major synod of world bishops on family policy due in October. Most national bishops conferences have not published their results for the Vatican survey, but the few reports released in Europe indicated a wide gap between Church teaching on sex and the views that many Catholics actually hold. Some disappointment rang through in comments on how Francis is doing his job. In his lowest rating, only 54 percent said he was addressing the clerical sexual abuse scandal well.U.S. Catholics rated the abuse scandal the most important issue for the new pope in a Pew survey in March 2013.By contrast, 81 percent thought he was spreading the faith well and standing up for traditional moral values. Some 76 percent credited him with addressing the needs of the poor. The survey said 22 percent of Americans identify as Catholics and 40 percent of them reported they attended Mass weekly or more often. Another 42 percent of self-identified Catholics went to church only occasionally and 18 percent never.(Reporting by Tom Heneghan; Editing by Grant McCool)

Francis: the Pope is “a normal person”, not Superman

In an interview with Italy’s Corriere della Sera, Pope Francis says he is a normal person, not superman, and speaks about the family, child abuse, foreign trips, relations with the Orthodox, China, and how he governs the Church

Gerard O’Connell Rome
“The Pope is a man who laughs, cries, sleeps peacefully, and has friends like everyone else. A normal person”, Francis said in an interview with the chief-editor of Italy’s leading daily, Corriere della Sera, Ferruccio de Bortoli, published today.  “I like to be among people, to be with the one who is suffering, to go into the parishes”, he stated. But he denied that he has gone out at night to feed the down and outs near the Vatican. He made clear however that he detests being depicted as a kind of superman or star: “Sigmund Freud said that in every idealization there is an aggression. To depict the Pope as a kind of superman or a star seems to me offensive”.In this interview,  which was published simultaneously in La Nacion, the Argentine counterpart of the Italian daily,  the Jesuit Pope touches on a wide range of topics: the family, women, the Orthodox, relations with China, globalization. The human side of Francis emerges once again in his answers, as does his keen desire to find new ways for the Church to show God’s love for people, and to proclaim the Gospel to all nations. “I would like to visit my sister who is ill; she is the last of the five of us.  I would like to see her, but this does not justify a trip to Argentina: I call her by phone and this is enough”, he said. But he confirmed that he does not plan to visit Argentina until 2016 because he has already been to Latin America for the World Youth Day in Rio. “Now I must go to the Holy Land, and to Asia and then to Africa”, he stated.Asked whether his visit to the Holy Land in May could lead to an agreement on intercommunion with the Orthodox, Francis responded, “We are all impatient to obtain ‘closed’ results, but the road to unity with the Orthodox means above all to walk and work together”. Orthodox theology is “very rich”, they have “great theologians” today, and “their vision of Church and of synodality is marvelous”, he said.In this third conversation with an Italian daily, Francis revealed his great desire to develop friendly relations with China: “We are close to China. I sent a letter to President Xi Jingping when he was elected, three days after me. And he replied to me.  Relations exist. They are a great people. I love them”.He reaffirmed that he doesn’t take offense when some in the USA, and elsewhere, accuse him of Marxism.  “I have never shared the Marxist ideology because it is not true, but I have known many courageous people who profess Marxism”, he said.Speaking about his relationship with Benedict XVI, Pope Francis said regards him as a wise grandfather, whose counsel he sometimes seeks.  He recalled that before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) the idea of an emeritus bishop didn’t exist but now, he notes, we also have an emeritus Pope. “Benedict is the first and perhaps there will be others. We do not know”, he said, not excluding the possibility that he could follow suit.

Asked if he is a lonely man in relation to the way he governs, Francis said: “the Pope is not alone in his work, because he is accompanied and advised by many people.  He would be a solitary person if he decided without hearing, or pretending to hear”, but then the moment comes to decide “and he is alone with his sense of responsibility”.After his election, he said, “I began to govern by trying to put into practice (implement) that which had emerged in the debate among the cardinals in the various congregations (before the conclave)” and “in my way of acting I wait for the Lord to give me inspiration”.He affirmed once again that tenderness and mercy are the essence of the Gospel: “it is the center of the Gospel. Otherwise one does not understand Jesus Christ, the tenderness of the Father whom he sends to listen to us, to heal us, to save us”.Speaking about the horrific abuse of children by priests, Francis said “the cases of abuse are terrible because they leave very deep wounds”.  Benedict XVI “was very courageous and opened a road, and the Church has done a lot on this route, perhaps more than all others”, he stated. He noted that the statistics reveal the tremendous violence against children, but also that the vast majority of abuse takes place in the milieu of the family and those close to them.  The Church is the only public institution to have moved “with transparency and responsibility”, he said; no one else has done as much as it, “but the Church is the only one to be attacked”.Questioned about his position on wealth, Francis insisted that “the Gospel condemns the cult of wellbeing”, and emphasized that at the Final Judgment “our closeness to poverty” is what will count. “Poverty keeps idolatry far away, and opens the door to Providence.”Commenting on globalization, Francis observed that “while it is true that globalization has saved many persons from poverty, it has also condemned many others to die of hunger, because with this economic system it becomes selective”.   He argued that the present kind of economic and financial globalization puts money, not the human person, at the center. This is the problem. In response to a question about the family and the synod, Francis said the family “is going through a very serious crisis”, the young marry less, many families break-up and the children suffer.  “We must give a response.  But to do so, we must reflect much in depth”, he said. That’s what happened at the recent consistory and it will happen again at the forthcoming synods in 2014 and 2015. “It’s only in the light of a profound reflection that one can seriously face the particular situations, also those of the divorced, with pastoral depth”.

Pope Francis praised Cardinal Walter Kasper’s keynote talk on the family to the assembly of cardinals (the Consistory) on 20-21 February which the interviewer said had sparked divisions among them. “It was a most beautiful and profound presentation, which will soon be published in German.  It dealt with five points, the fifth of which was the question of second marriages”, Francis commented. He said he would have been “worried” if there had not been “intense discussion” and, moreover, the cardinals knew they could speak freely. Indeed, “the fraternal and open confrontations make the theological and pastoral theology develop.  I do not fear this; on the contrary I seek it.”Asked why he doesn’t speak about the so-called “non-negotiable values”, particularly in the field of bioethics and sexual morality, Pope Francis stumped the interviewer by telling him, “I have never understood the expression ‘non-negotiable values’.  Values are values. Full stop! I cannot say that among the fingers of a hand there is one more useful than another. So I do not understand in what sense there can be negotiable values”. He recalled that he had said what he wished to say on the theme of life in his Apostolic Exhortation, “The Joy of the Gospel” (Evangelii Gaudium). On the question of marriage and civil unions, the Pope reaffirmed that “marriage is between a man and a woman”.  States seek to justify civil unions “to regularize different situations of living together”, pushed by the need to regularize the economic aspects between people, such as, for example, to ensure health care, he said.  “We have to look at the different cases and evaluate them in their variety”.When asked whether the Church would again revisit the question of birth control, some 50 years after Humanae Vitae, Francis recalled that, at the end, Paul VI “recommended that confessors should be very merciful, and be attentive to the concrete situations”.  Francis praised his predecessor for being “prophetic” and for “having the courage to go against the majority, to defend the moral discipline, to exercise a cultural brake, and to oppose present and future Neo- Malthusianism.”   But, he said, it is not a question of changing doctrine, rather “it is a matter of going into the issue in depth and bringing it about that the pastoral practice takes account of situations and of what is possible for persons”.  This will be discussed at the synod, he added.Responding to a question on how the role of women can be promoted in the Church, Francis said that while it is true that women “can and must be present in decision-making places in the Church”, this is only “a promotion of a functional type” and will not take us far down the road.   It’s necessary to think that the Church “is feminine from its origins” because “the Marian principle guided the Church alongside the Petrine one.  The Virgin Mary was more important than any bishop or any apostle”. Therefore, it is necessary to deepen the theology, and this is being done with the Council of the Laity, with the contribution of women with expertise in different fields.
