Ex-Israeli PM Ariel Sharon in 'grave' condition, hospital says

JERUSALEM –  The Israeli hospital treating Ariel Sharon says the former prime minister has deteriorated further and he is now in `grave' condition.Sharon, who has been comatose since suffering a stroke eight years ago, suffered a downturn in his health last week with a decline in key bodily organs.The Sheba Medical Center said Thursday his condition has worsened and his family is by his bedside.Sharon, one of Israel's most controversial and iconic figures, suffered the stroke at the height of his political power as he appeared to be cruising toward re-election.

Spain’s King Juan Carlos has been bombarded with a series of problems, causing many Spaniards to question if now is the time for him to abdicate the throne, a report inquires.

Spaniards are asking whether or not Juan Carlos - who has been hit with ongoing health issues and royal scandals - should step down as King of Spain, AFP posited in a Wednesday report.An opinion poll has revealed that a majority of people in Spain disapprove of Juan Carlos, with experts saying the King has lost touch with the problems of the country.“The next four, five, six months will be key to the path the monarchy takes. Either these problems are forgotten or by the summer we will have an abdication. It is a critical moment,” said the king’s biographer, Cesar de la Lama.The king has been faced with the decision after coming back from surgery to replace his left hip on November 21, his ninth operation since May 2010.Since last year, Juan Carlos's problems have grown to include allegations that his youngest daughter, Cristina, was involved in tax and money-laundering crimes.“The monarchy is going through its worst moment…There is no shortage of problems for the Spanish monarchy, they have reason to be worried…Surely the day that the king abdicates is close," said Antonio Torres del Moral, a law lecturer at Spain's UNED university. Another reason that Spaniards dislike the king stems from a luxury African elephant-hunting safari he took in 2012, while his citizens were struggling with a steep recession and a record high unemployment rate of 26 percent.Spain’s economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, which has taken with it millions of jobs.GMA/AB
