Pope Francis ranked among this year’s 50 most prominent Jews

Bergoglio's friendly relationship with the Jews

American magazine Forward has included Pope Francis in its list of top 50 Jewish figures, in the “PLUS” category, highlighting his contribution to the Catholic Church’s relations with the Jews. But part of the reason he was included was to launch a strong attack on Benedict XVI

Forward magazine, the historic voice of American liberal Judaism, decided to add Bergoglio to the 2013 edition  of Forward 50, its annual list of top Jewish-American figures. The reason for this “endorsement” is party due to an umpteenth attempt to launch an attack on Francis’ predecessor, Benedict XVI.As he is not Jewish, Francis has been added to the magazine’s “PLUS” list. The accompanying note included in the Pope’s profile explains the reason why he was chosen: “After eight months as head of the world’s 1 billion Roman Catholics (not to mention 10 million Twitter followers), the new pontiff — the first from outside Europe — has made improving relations with the Jewish world a key goal.” The magazine adds that “the only book he has penned is an extraordinary dialogue with a rabbi who had become fast friends with then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio in their native Argentina.”But amidst all this praise, Forward 50 adds that “It wouldn’t be tough to improve on the tone set by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who refused all access to the Holocaust archives and fast-tracked sainthood for the controversial Pope Pius XII, who many accuse of staying silent in the face of Hitler’s slaughter.” In doing so the magazine fuels the stereotypical contrast drawn between Poep Francis and Benedict XVI, with this statement on Ratzinger’s relationship with Judaism, which seems discredited by the obvious prejudice shown. The usual reference to Pius XII’s controversial beatification is not missing either. Forward also makes a completely false statement regarding the Vatican archives: When he was Pope, Benedict XVI opened up the archives making available all material relating to the pontificate of Pius XI and therefore the year 1939 – a crucial period in terms of the Nazi persecution of Jews. Pacelli was Vatican Secretary of State at the time. Ratzinger’s attitude towards the documents on Pius XII’s pontificate was the same as Wojtyla’s. He said the documents would be made public once the cataloguing process was complete. In a public statement made during the prtesentation of the Lux in Arcana exhibition, Tarcisio Bertone, who was Secretary of State at the time (in February 2012, when Benedict XVI was still Pope) estimated the waiting period to be a couple of years. This means that even without Francis’ election, the time of the opening of the Pius XII archives was very near anyway. So the basis of Forward’s accusations against Benedict XVI – who is put across as the obstacle to the opening of the Vatican archives dating back to the Holocaust period - remains unclear.
Another point that should be born in mind, is that the magazine does not quote Benedict XVI’s specific theological pronouncements on the subject. It simply expresses the hope that Francis’ attitude will influence the way in which all Christians view Jews. Many Jewish observers recognise that Ratzinger went further than any other Pope in this field. The speeches he gave in Cologne Synagogue in 2005 and in the Great Synagogue of Rome in 2010 are proof of this.

“The Pope has nothing against the Old Rite and those who follow it”

“Pope Francis has nothing against the Old Rite or the lay groups and associations that follow it,” Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos told Vatican Insider. The cardinal was formerly Prefect of the Clergy and President of the Commission that deals with the Catholic Church’s relations with the Lefebvrians and groups that celebrate the pre-conciliar Rite.The cardinal had spoken about this in an off-the-cuff statement to members of Una Voce International, one of the associations that promote the so-called “Old Mass” celebrated according to the Roman Missal promulgated by John XXIII in 1962, the last missal introduced before the post-Conciliar liturgical reform. “In the recent audience the Pope conceded to me, he told me he had nothing against the Extraordinary Roman Rite or those who celebrate it and spread knowledge of it, according to the spirit of Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio "Summorum Pontificum".Castrillón also spoke about the issue surrounding the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate who were placed under the supervision of an external Commissioner. This triggered a great deal of controversy among “traditionalist” circles. “I would like to point out that I did not speak about this case during my meeting with Pope Francis. I have other sources but I think it’s safe to say that the insistence on the importance of celebrating the New Rite and the need for superiors to authorise the celebration of the Old Rite in this Franciscan community was in response to internal tensions within the order of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, and not due to any negative judgement of the traditional liturgy.”

On the subject of Rome’s relations with the traditionalist world, it is worth noting that Pope Francis recently sent his blessing to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter on the occasion of the 25^th anniversary of its foundation.The fraternity currently has 400 members across the world (244 priests and 153 seminarists) and was founded in 1988 to welcome those who wanted to go on celebrating the Old Rite but no longer wished to follow Bishop Marcel Lefebvre after he disobeyed the Pope and ordained four new bishops without the Pope’s consensus. Last 28 October, Francis sent his blessing, pointing out that “celebrating the holy mysteries according to the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite… contributes to a better understanding and implementation of the principles of the Second Vatican Council, remaining faithful to the living tradition of the Church.” This is according to a communiqué sent by the Apostolic Nuncio to Paris, Luigi Ventura, to the Abbot Vincent Ribeton, Superior of the French district.The Pope urged members of the Fraternity of St. Peter “to actively take part in the Church’s global mission, using their personal charisma, living a holy life, a certain faith giving in a creative and generous way.”

Faltering negotiations and increased hostility

Abbas may be using the threat of his team’s resignation to get the Israelis to stop announcing more settlement construction

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday, in an interview with Egyptian station CBC, that the Palestinian negotiating team had resigned in protest over continued construction in the settlements. The message succeeded, it seems, in surprising even the members of the negotiating team themselves.Two weeks before, Saeb Erekat and Mohammed Ishtayeh had filed a resignation letter with Abbas, which was leaked to the media. That same evening, one of Abbas’s spokesmen said that he “didn’t know about any such resignation.” The two Palestinian negotiators met again with their Israeli counterparts during US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit, which was one week ago. And so the question is, have they resigned or not?The reason given by Abbas for the resignations was construction in the settlements. According to the interview, it was up to him to convince the negotiating team to not resign, or, alternatively, to appoint a new negotiating team. Abbas added that he believed discussions would continue despite the resignations. Erekat then told Reuters that the talks were frozen last week.Abbas, it seems, decided to go along with Erekat’s actions. Because of the way the Israeli side talks about the settlements, with the right flank of the government (Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel and the rest of the Jewish Home party) trying to break the left flank (justice minister and chief negotiator Tzipi Livni, the Yesh Atid party) with myriad announcements about settlement construction, Abbas is using a catch-me-if-you-can policy.The message he is trying to convey to the Israelis is that if tenders for continued construction in the West Bank continue to be issued, in the end the PA will lose its authority and will no longer be able to conduct negotiations. A break in discussions, in the current climate, would actually be accepted by the international community, and the PA could renew its petitions to the United Nations with stronger international backing.The next question — and the answer is unclear — is how such a move would affect the reality on the ground. Abbas knows, also, that the West Bank suffers from chronic instability. Relative calm has been maintained, but more and more fuel for a potential fire is being accumulated from the ongoing series of “independent” Palestinian attacks on Israeli targets.Despite the dismissive response by the Israeli government regarding Secretary of State John Kerry’s warning last week that if negotiations fail, there is a danger of a third intifada, it is not a fictional scenario. Although it might not be a popular national street uprising like the first intifada in 1987, we can certainly expect an upsurge in hostilities similar to the stabbing attack on a bus in Afula on Wednesday, in which IDF soldier Eden Atias was murdered in his sleep by a 16-year-old Palestinian.

Livni raps PA negotiators for resigning

Israel’s chief negotiator in peace talks with the Palestinians on Thursday criticized the resignation of Palestinian negotiators that had been announced the previous day by PA President Mahmoud Abbas, saying they were reneging on their commitments. She expressed hope that negotiations would nevertheless continue as planned.“The resignations are incompatible with the responsibilities that they took upon themselves,” Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said in an interview with Army Radio.Abbas announced the resignation in a radio interview on Wednesday, declaring that the negotiating team had stepped down over Israel’s continued settlement construction in the West Bank. Abbas noted, however, that if he failed to convince the negotiators to rescind their resignation, he would appoint a new team to represent the Palestinians at peace talks.

On Tuesday, the Housing Ministry published tenders for the planning of some 20,000 settlement apartments — an unprecedented number — including 1,200 units in the controversial E1 corridor linking Jerusalem with Ma’ale Adumim to the east, the settlement watchdog Peace Now said.Soon after the report broke, Netanyahu canceled the tender for E1. And later Tuesday, Netanyahu ordered all the plans pulled back, saying the move to push forward tens of thousands of new units over the Green Line was a “meaningless step” that would create pointless tension with the international community.However, after the publication of the tenders, Erekat said he had called the United States, Russia, the European Union, the United Nations and the Arab League to voice his protest.“I informed them that if Israel implements this decision, then this means the end of the negotiations and the end of the peace process,” he said.Israel and the Palestinians have held more than a dozen secretive meetings since resuming talks in August. While there have been no official statements on progress — or even on the specific details of the talks — rumors abound that negotiations have run up against both sides’ intractable positions on such key issues as Jerusalem, the “right of return” for Palestinian refugees, and continued Israeli military presence along the border with Jordan.

Wilders and Le Pen join forces on anti-EU group

BRUSSELS - A political group uniting Europe's far-right and anti-EU forces has moved a step closer after Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders confirmed plans to work together ahead of next May's European elections."Today is the beginning of the liberation from the European elite, the monster in Brussels," said Wilders at a joint press conference with the National Front leader in the Dutch parliament in The Hague on Wednesday (13 November)."We want to decide how we control our borders, our money, our economy, our currency," continued Wilders, a Dutch anti-Islam politician."Our old European nations are forced to ask the authorisation of Brussels in all circumstances, forced to submit their budget to the headmistress," said Le Pen
"The people of Europe are standing up against the EU. They want to defend their identity."Last month Le Pen told reporters in the Strasbourg parliament that she was hopeful of persuading nationalist candidates from across the EU to run on the ticket of the European Alliance for Freedom (EAF).The public pact between the two main standard-bearers of the eurosceptic right will alarm Europe's mainstream political parties who fear a voter backlash next May.Le Pen and Wilders' parties currently top the opinion polls in France and the Netherlands. Recent surveys put Wilders' Freedom party on 20 percent, while the National Front are also polling between 20-25 percent, outstripping Francois Hollande's governing socialist party and the opposition conservatives.Current opinion polls suggest that far-right parties could take around 100 of the 751 seats in the next parliament.Belgian Flemish separatists Vlaams Belang, Austria's Freedom party and the Swedish Democrats have also been confirmed as allies, although Nigel Farage's UK independence party, which is also expected to perform well next May, has so far ruled out joining the coalition.Meanwhile, the anti-immigrant Danish People's party said Wednesday they would not join Le Pen and Wilders.The EAF was set up in 2010 and has since received over €750,000 from the European Parliament. This has caused previous attempts to form a cohesive group to collapse.Despite being united in their euroscepticism and anti-immigrant rhetoric, the economic liberalism of the Freedom party and Vlaams Belang sits awkwardly with the National Front's more statist approach to economic policy.Mainstream political parties have "reason to worry but no reason to panic" said Roland Freudenstein of the Centre for European Studies, a centre-right think tank, at a European Parliament meeting on the subject last week.

But he noted that mainstream parties have made the mistake of treating multiculturalism and integration as taboo subjects.

CAIRO — Egypt’s foreign minister sought to downplay speculation of a major foreign policy shift, saying during a rare top-level Russian visit on Thursday that Cairo wants to boost ties with Moscow and not replace the United States as its key ally.The remarks by Nabil Fahmy came after talks with his visiting counterpart Sergei Lavrov, who is leading the Russian delegation to Cairo. It’s Moscow’s highest-level visit to Egypt in years and includes Russia’s defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, whose presence has set off rumors of an arms deal in the making.Fahmy said he, Lavrov, Shigu and Egyptian Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi — who led the popularly-backed coup in July that ousted Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi — would jointly meet later Thursday.Depicting the meeting as an “activation” of existing ties, Fahmy said Egypt hopes for cooperation “in multiple fields” because of “Russia’s significance in the international arena.”“We seek to energize a relation that is already in existence,” Fahmy told reporters.

When asked whether Russia would replace the U.S. as his country’s chief ally, Fahmy said Egypt was not looking for a “substitute for anyone” and that Russia was too significant for such a role.“Russia has had a relationship with the Egyptian people for dozens of years,” Lavrov said, speaking through an interpreter. He described Thursday’s meeting as “historic.”The Russian visit comes as Egypt’s relationship with the United States — Cairo’s main foreign backer and benefactor since the 1970s — has become increasingly strained in the wake of the military’s ouster of Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president.Lavrov also said Russia’s supports a return of stability to Egypt — a reference to the turmoil roiling the country since the 2011 uprising that ousted staunch U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak.“Russia would like to see a stable Egypt with a prosperous economy and an efficient political system,” he said, offering support for a transition-to-democracy plan by Egypt’s military-backed rulers, including an upcoming referendum on new constitutional amendments.

A majority of Jewish Israelis believe that Israel cannot rely on the United States to ensure the security of the Jewish state during negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, according to a poll published Thursday.

A full 55 percent of Israeli Jews felt that the US cannot be relied upon to safeguard Israel’s security during the Iranian talks, with 31% saying the Americans could be trusted on the issue and 14% stating that they did not have an opinion on the matter, according to the poll, which was commissioned by Israel Radio and conducted among a representative sample of Jewish Israeli adults by the Rafi Smith Institute.A clear majority of both self-identified right-wing and left-wing respondents said the US could’t be relied upon when it came to Iran, a result that the institute described as “significant” and displayed the public’s general feeling that the Obama administration was “not pro-Israel.”Forty-two percent of respondents said the US government was not giving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an “accurate and reliable picture” of the ongoing talks, 33% said they didn’t know if the US was presenting information about the talks accurately to the Israeli government, and 25% said Washington was giving a reliable picture of the discussions, the poll found.Netanyahu’s public critiques of a potential deal with Iran, which made headlines over the weekend, were justified, according to 40% of the respondents, with another 22% saying the prime ministers response was justified but “excessive,” and 30% had “no opinion.” Only 9% said the response was “unjustified.”

Despite reported progress, the latest round of discussions between the P5+1 world powers — the US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany — and Iran, conducted over the weekend in Geneva, ended without a deal after a proposed agreement was reportedly stymied over France’s objections to its terms. The sides are to meet again on November 20. Netanyahu’s criticism of the deal has been uncharacteristically acerbic, leading to a high-profile, ongoing dispute with US Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry has also said it was Iran, not the P5+1 nations, that ultimately chose not to sign the deal in Geneva.The six powers were considering a gradual rollback of sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy. In exchange, they demanded initial curbs on Iran’s nuclear program, including a cap on uranium enrichment to a level that cannot be turned quickly to weapons use.Israel has strongly opposed any deal that would leave Iran with the capability to quickly construct a nuclear weapon, leading Netanyahu and other officials to publicly come out against what they saw as a flawed potential agreement.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
