After murder, deputy ministers urge halt to prisoner releases, peace talks
Opposition leader says ‘heinous crime’ must not derail negotiations

In the wake of the terror attack Wednesday morning in which an 19-year-old IDF soldier was stabbed to death
by a Palestinian youth on a bus in the northern Israeli city of Afula,
Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon urged Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu to suspend the future planned releases of Palestinian
prisoners.“I
turned to the prime minister today with a demand to stop any more
[Palestinian] prisoner releases following the stabbing attack this
morning in Afula, in which an IDF soldier was killed in his sleep on a
bus, and following the [recent] terror attacks emanating from the
Palestinian territories,” Danon wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday.A
fellow Likud deputy minister, Tzipi Hotovely, called for a suspension of
negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.Opposition politicians, by
contrast, said the
crime should not be used as a pretext to halt talks with the
Palestinians on an accord that serves Israel’s interests.In July, Israel
agreed to a four-stage
prisoner release deal as part of peace talks restarted under US
auspices. Israel released a first group of 26 prisoners in August, and a
second in October. With two more stages remaining, and with attacks
against Israeli civilians on the rise, Danon once again voiced
opposition to the move. “These ongoing talks are deluding both the Israeli public and the Palestinians,” Danon said. “We must put an end to this obvious collision course,” he added.Deputy
Transportation Minister Hotovely laid the blame for the attack on the
PA, accusing it of “harming Israel” indirectly, by inciting the
“Palestinian street” and “feeding” it anti-Israeli propaganda. “We can’t
go on talking peace while the Palestinian Authority turns to terror,”
Hotovely said.Meanwhile, opposition leader Shelly
Yachimovich (Labor) urged Netanyahu “not to use the heinous murder to go
on thwarting the budding negotiations which are already bruised,
battered and stunted, with the heavy shadow of a rift with the United
States hanging over them.”

Minister Tzipi Livni eulogized Eden Atias, the 19-year-old who was
stabbed to death, expressing condolences to the victim’s
family.“Violence won’t bring about political achievements,” she said,
adding that Israel would continue to “fight terror and extremists
decisively and uncompromisingly.”Also reacting to the incident was MK
Yitzhak
Herzog of the Labor party, who said the murder was “severe, painful and
disturbing.”Herzog added that the incident served as
further proof that the “right solution” for Israel is “separation from
the Palestinians through negotiations,” a goal toward which Israel
should strive more “diligently and fearlessly” than ever.Herzog said the
attack “serves as a reminder
that there will always be those who try to threaten Israeli citizens,”
adding that security forces must be “constantly on alert” to prevent
future attacks.MK Moti Yogev (Jewish Home) linked the murder
to previous attacks on Israelis committed by Palestinians without
Israeli entry permits, calling for more stringent control over the entry
of Palestinians into Israel.“At a time in which the incitement in the
Palestinian Authority is on the rise, calling for hatred and even
eradication of Jews as Hitler once did … [Israeli] security forces must
enforce this [control over illegal entrants] with greater vigor, and
understand that the defense and security establishments have the ability
to prevent the next murder,” Yogev said.

The dedication of the Third Temple

The upcoming month of Mar Heshvan is the only month of the Hebrew calendar that
does not feature even a minor observance – not even a fast
day.
Especially given the fact that this month comes right after the action-packed month of Tishrei – which is host to the High Holy Days and Succot, with its high-profile, action-oriented mitzvot – this month of Mar Heshvan seems particularly drab and colorless... a fitting introduction to winter.After the rush of adrenalin we experience in Tishrei that manifests itself in every aspect of our prayers and spiritual pursuits, is this month not something of an anticlimax? Indeed, as the month of Heshvan enters, the concept of disappointment seems to transcend our personal idiom and take on a universal theme, running parallel to our own lives, through the Torah portions that begin the month. In the Torah portion of Bereshit, we are told God was pleased with the world. Upon completing His creation, He looked and beheld that it was very good. Yet by the time we reach the end of the portion – and a mere 10 generations have passed from Adam to Noah – God was so disappointed with His creation He regretted having made man, and decided to destroy all life with the exception of the righteous Noah and those with him in the ark. And don’t forget that it was on the 17th day of this very month of Mar Heshvan that the flood began.But a fascinating mystical tradition relates that although on the surface Heshvan doesn’t have much to offer, in truth, the best is yet to come: “The Tabernacle of the desert was completed by Moses in the month of Kislev, however the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded him to wait until the following Nisan to inaugurate it. The month of Kislev was embarrassed, and so God rewarded her with the rededication of the Second Temple, during the era of Hanukka.“The First Temple, built by King Solomon, was completed during the month of Mar Heshvan [the month known as ‘Bul’; see I Kings 6:38], however, through Divine inspiration, King Solomon knew that he was not to dedicate it until the following Tishrei. So, the month of Mar Heshvan was embarrassed... and God promised to repay it in the future, with the dedication ceremony of the Third Temple.”(Midrash Yalkut Melachim 184 as cited in Bnei Yissaschar) HOW SHOULD a tradition such as this be understood? Is it merely an anecdote, a whimsical tale of a “month being embarrassed,” devoid of any significance in our real world? What would it take to make a dream like this – the dream of the dedication of the Third Temple – come true? If there is one thing we know about the Jewish people, it’s that our dreams always come true. But it is the people of Israel themselves who make these dreams happen.
A constant recurring theme in the Torah is that everything is up to us. This is exactly why the Sea of Reeds did not split until one man – Nachshon, the son of Aminadav, prince of the tribe of Judah – walked out into the water until the sea came up to his nostrils, and he could walk no further. God made a miracle, to be sure... but only after one man showed Israel that nothing will happen until we do all that we can possibly do ourselves... and not a drop less.There is a spiritual revolution taking place in Israel. This past Succot bore witness to a great outpouring of Jewish love, dedication and devotion to the Temple Mount, as seen by the huge crowds, hailing from all over the land as well as from abroad, who withstood waiting on lines in the blistering sun for hours, and indignation at the hands of the police, all for the chance of even a brief opportunity to ascend the mountain.Those who succeeded felt the life-changing effect of being in this unique place, “seen by God” in the holiest place on earth, and of being part of the unfolding destiny of the nation of Israel and the redemption of all humanity – especially on the festival of Succot, whose observance in the Holy Temple effects a rectification for all mankind. Those who ascended could not wait to return and vowed to come back again and again... and those who waited long hours only to be turned away were only strengthened in their resolve to return to visit the Temple Mount as often as possible.This is how the Third Temple will be rebuilt. When we see how the nation of Israel, with its collective, intuitive wisdom and pure faith, is peacefully changing the facts on the ground, we can understand how, after such a Tishrei, Mar Heshvan is anything but drab... it is laden with promise and potential, because the best is yet to come.We can understand how the Jewish people will see to it that Hashem will keep His promise to the month of Heshvan, with the dedication of the new Holy Temple, which will bring about the resting of the Divine Presence and the ultimate healing of all mankind. Our long-term goal is to do all in our limited power to bring about the building of the Holy Temple in our time.”Anyone browsing the group’s website could see images of models of the Third Temple, with the Muslim holy places like the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque conspicuously absent from these illustrations.Army Radio also discovered that aside from subsidies, the state also permits young women who opt to forgo compulsory military service to perform national service as unpaid tour guides and instructors with the institute. The women are also sent to schools and kindergartens around the country to speak about their experiences as well as the educational programs the institute has to offer.The Education Ministry responded to the Army Radio report, saying: “The nonprofit meets criteria for receiving subsidies that go toward instructing students who visit the institute, and this has been the case for over 10 years now.”“The Temple Institute deals with research, and it is supported by the ministry in accordance with professional criteria that has nothing to do with directly supporting the individual who heads it,” a Culture and Sport Ministry spokesperson said in response.“Thus far we have found nothing that would raise suspicions of incitement or anything unusual as it relates to the temple. In light of the Army Radio report, it is the ministry’s intention to bring this matter to the attention of our legal department.”

Report: State funds groups that advocate building Third Temple

The state has been subsidizing nonprofit organizations that advocate
the building of the Third Temple atop Jerusalem’s holiest site, an Army
Radio expose revealed on Sunday.Over the course of the last
decade, the Education Ministry and the Culture and Sport Ministry have
transferred between NIS 300,000 and 700,000 to a non-government
organization known as The Temple Institute. Just last year, the group
received NIS 282,000 from the Education Ministry and another NIS 134,000
from the Culture Ministry.“The Institute is dedicated to every aspect of the Biblical commandment to build the Holy Temple of G-d on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem,” the group’s website reads. “Our short-term goal is to rekindle the flame of the Holy Temple in the hearts of mankind through education.
