numerous items have been discovered that are heralded as offering
important context to the holy book's contents. The latest find comes
from archaeologists working in Turkey who believe they may have have
uncovered the most fascinating relic yet -- a piece of Jesus Christ's
cross.
This particular item, found in a stone chest, was uncovered in the ruins of Balatlar Church
in Sinop, Turkey, LiveScience reported. The container, found at the
house of worship that was constructed in A.D. 660, is described as
housing "a piece of a cross.""We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and
we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]," lead
excavator Professor Gülgün Köro?lu told Hurriyet Daily News. "This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far."NBC has more about the fascinating discovery:Köro?l is a art historian and an archaeologist at the Mimar Sinan

Has the Bible's Garden of Eden been found -- and restored?

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri urged
Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters to abandon democracy and
seek to govern through the full implementation of Islamic law.

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon's state-run news agency says a Syrian
warplane struck targets near the border with Lebanon, killing at least
nine people and wounding nine others.A Lebanese security official
in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa region confirmed Saturday's airstrike and
said it targeted the rebel-held Syrian town of Yabroud just across the
border from the Lebanese town of Arsal.The area is known to house
many refugees from the Syrian town of Qusair, which was captured by
Syrian forces in June following battles that destroyed much of the town.The
official said those killed included six members of the same family. He
spoke on customary condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
(Reuters) - U.S. health authorities have traced at least one
source of an intestinal bug that has sickened more than 400 people in 17
states to salad greens supplied to restaurants by a company in Mexico.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said a salad mix linked to the
outbreak of cyclosporiasis was supplied to restaurants in Iowa and
Nebraska by Taylor Farms de Mexico, a processor of food service salads.The restaurants included outlets of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster
chains, both of which are owned by Darden Restaurants Inc, the FDA said
in an e-mail.The FDA found that illnesses at four restaurants were traced to
Taylor Farms. The agency said it will be conducting an assessment of the
company's processing facility in Mexico to try to learn the probable
cause of the outbreak.The FDA said its investigation "has not implicated consumer packages sold in grocery stores."At its most recent inspection at Taylor Farms, in 2011, the FDA said
it found no notable issues. The agency said that as a result of the
current investigation it is increasing surveillance on other green leafy
products exported to the United States from Mexico.It is unclear whether cases reported from other states are part of the same outbreak. The investigation is ongoing.Cyclosporiasis is most common in tropical and subtropical regions of
the world. The infection is caused by ingesting food or water
containing a one-celled parasite that is too small to be detected
without a microscope. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, vomiting and
body aches.Most people with healthy immune systems recover from the infection
without treatment. Older people and those with weakened immune systems

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand authorities have
triggered a global recall of up to 1,000 tons of dairy products across
seven countries after dairy giant Fonterra announced tests had turned up
a type of bacteria that could cause botulism.New Zealand's
Ministry of Primary Industries said Saturday that the tainted products
include infant formula, sports drinks, protein drinks and other
beverages. It said countries affected beside New Zealand include China,
Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.Fonterra said its customers were urgently checking their supply chains.One
New Zealand company has locked down five batches of infant formula and
China is asking importers to immediately recall products.
Fonterra is the world's fourth-largest dairy company, with annual revenues of about $16 billion.The news comes as a blow to New Zealand's dairy industry, which powers the country's economy. New Zealand exports about 95 percent of its milk.Consumers in China and elsewhere are willing to pay a big premium for New Zealand infant formula because the country has a clean and healthy reputation. Chinese consumers have a special interest after tainted local milk formula killed six babies in 2008.The Centers for Disease Control describes botulism as a rare but sometimes fatal paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin.Fonterra said it has told eight of its customers of the problem, which dates back more than a year, and they were investigating whether any of the affected product is in their supply chains. Fonterra said those companies will initiate any consumer product recalls.At a news conference Saturday, Fonterra repeatedly refused to divulge the companies, countries or specific products affected. Gary Romano, the managing director of Fonterra's New Zealand milk products, said his company supplies raw materials to the eight companies and it is up to them to inform their consumers of what products might be tainted.The company did acknowledge its chief executive, Theo Spierings, planned to fly to China Saturday, in part to deal with the fallout from the botulism scare.
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said Saturday that New Zealand company Nutricia had used some of the tainted product in its Karicare line of formula for infants aged over 6 months. Nutricia had locked down all five batches of infant formula it believed contained the tainted product, the ministry said. But it advised that parents should buy different Nutricia products or alternative brands until it verified the location of all tainted Nutricia products.China's product quality watchdog issued a statement urging importers of Fonterra dairy products to immediately start recalling the products.The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine also told quality agencies around China to step up inspections of milk products from New Zealand.Romano said the problem was caused by unsterilized pipes at a Waikato factory. He said three batches of whey protein weighing about 42 tons were tainted in May 2012, adding that Fonterra has since cleaned the pipes.The New Zealand ministry says the tainted product has been mixed with other ingredients to form about 1,000 tons of consumer products worldwide.The company said in a release it identified a potential quality problem in March when a product tested positive for the bacteria Clostridium. Many strains of the bacteria are harmless, the company said, and product samples were put through intensive testing over the following months. It said that on July 31 it discovered the presence of a strain of the bacteria that can cause botulism.Romano said Fonterra hasn't received reports of anybody getting sick and added that the problem hasn't affected any fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese or long-lasting heat-treated milk.New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said it was working with the company to investigate.Spierings, the chief executive, said in the release that food safety was the company's top priority.
"We are acting quickly," he said. For those who believe in its literal existence, Eden has been a focus of debate, particularly surrounding where it was located.Now, despite ongoing violence in the region, NewScientist is reporting that the "'Garden of Eden' has been saved." The country's Council of Ministers recently approved its first national park, restoring Mesopotamian marshes in Iraqi's southern region.The name of the new park, according to Nature of Iraq, the group that advocated for its creation, is the Central Marshes of Iraq. NewScientist continues:
This vast wetland of reed beds and waterways, home of the Ma'dan Marsh Arabs, is widely held to be the home of the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden, the paradise where Adam and Eve were created and from which they were subsequently expelled.Earlier this year, The New York Times, too, reported that Bible scholars consider this land to be where the Garden of Eden once stood.Certainly, no one can be sure the area really is the Biblical home of Adam and Eve, but there is one profound fact worth noting. Despite the marsh's disappearance for years, all 278 species that were recorded on the land survived, finding the few spots that had water and sustaining themselves there.Miracle or simply nature's resiliency at work (or both)? You decide.Not all of the land came back to vibrancy, though, as surrounding nations like Syria, Iran and Turkey are still restricting water from the Tigris and Euphrates, NewScientist reports."With this action, Iraq has acted to preserve the cradle of civilization," said Azzam Alwash, founder and President of the Board of Directors of Nature Iraq. "It is now the duty of the world to help Iraq maintain these wetlands for the future generations by helping Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran to reach an equitable agreement on the sharing of the waters in the basin of the Tigris and Euphrates."Nature Iraq also said that international agreement over water supplies will be essential to ensuring that the marsh comes fully back to life. And the hope is that, one day, tourism will help fuel the money needed to sustain it.
After the Gulf war in 1991, Iraq's president, Saddam Hussain, used dykes, sluices and diversions to cut off the country's two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. This drained 93 per cent of the marshes, largely obliterating the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East

US issues global travel alert, citing al-Qaeda
On heels of embassy closure, State Department warns tourists of high likelihood of terrorist attacks ‘between now and August’

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United
States issued an extraordinary global travel warning to Americans about
the threat of an al-Qaida attack and closed down 21 embassies and
consulates across the Muslim world for the weekend.The
alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the
10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.A Sept. 11 attack last year on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, killed the ambassador and three other Americans.“There is a significant threat stream, and
we’re reacting to it,” said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff. He told ABC in an interview to be aired Sunday that the
threat was “more specific” than previous ones and the “intent is to
attack Western, not just U.S. interests.”The warning said al-Qaida or its allies might
target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert
expires on Aug. 31.The New York Times reported Friday night that
American officials said the U.S. had intercepted electronic
communications among senior operatives of al-Qaida.The State Department said the potential for
terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa,
with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian
Peninsula.
U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen,
the home of al-Qaida’s most dangerous offshoot and the network blamed
for several notable terrorist plots on the United States.“Current information suggests that al-Qaida
and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in
the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct
attacks in the period between now and the end of August,” a department
statement said.The State Department urged U.S. travelers to
take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with
public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists. It
noted that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail
networks as well as airplanes and boats.The alert was posted a day after the U.S.
announced it would shut many diplomatic facilities Sunday. Spokeswoman
Marie Harf said some missions may stay closed for longer than a day.Sunday is a business day in Muslim countries,
and the diplomatic offices affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest
Africa to Afghanistan.Although the warning coincided with “Al-Quds
Day,” the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan when people in
Iran and some Arab countries express their solidarity with the
Palestinians and their opposition to Israel, U.S. officials played down
any connection.They said the threat wasn’t directed toward a specific U.S. diplomatic facility.The concern by American officials over the
Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is not new, given the
terror branch’s gains in territory and reach during Yemen’s prolonged
Arab Spring-related instability.The group made significant territorial gains
last year, capturing towns and cities in the south amid a power struggle
in the capital that ended with the resignation of Yemen’s longtime
leader, Ali Abdullah Saleh. A U.S.-aided counteroffensive by the
government has since pushed the militants back.Yemen’s current president, Abdo Rabby Mansour
Hadi, met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on
Thursday, where both leaders cited strong counterterrorism cooperation.
Earlier this week, Yemen’s military reported a U.S. drone strike killed

Qasim al-Rimi, released an Arabic-language video urging attacks on U.S.

pointing toward an al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula plot,” said Seth
Jones, counterterror expert at the Rand Corp.Britain also took action Friday in Yemen, announcing it would close its embassy there on Sunday and Monday as a precaution.
Britain, which closely coordinates on
intelligence matters with Washington, stopped short of releasing a
similar region-wide alert but added that some embassy staff in Yemen had

Nasrallah: Destroying Israel is the Interest of All Arabs

Destroying Israel is the interest of the entire Arab world, Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah declared on Friday.
AFP reported that the head of the Lebanese terror group made a rare public appearance at a Beirut rally held to mark Iran’s Quds Day.It was a first appearance in public since last September for Nasrallah who, according to AFP attended the rally in Rweiss, in the southern suburbs of Beirut.In his
speech, Nasrallah thanked "Iran and Syria for all they are doing for
Palestine and Jerusalem, and for all they have given to resistance
movements (fighting Israel) in Lebanon and Palestine".Nasrallah
called for the end of Israel, saying its elimination "is in the interest
not only of the Palestinians but the entire Arab and Muslim world,"
according to AFP.He also
slammed supporters of radical Muslim takfiri movements -- a reference to
jihadist Sunni groups who have been fighting in Syria alongside other
rebels to oust the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad.Hizbullah’s
terrorists have been actively helping Assad’s troops fight the rebels.
The group agrees with the Syrian regime view that jihadist fighters are
linked to Al-Qaeda who receive support from abroad.
"The states
who support them, who push them to the battlefield and incite them to
commit murder... are responsible for all the catastrophes and
destruction, and are doing Israel and the United States a service,"
Nasrallah claimed, according to AFP."We need to
be aware of all these dangers and strive as much as we can to solve
these crises through internal dialogue, and put a stop to the bloodshed
in Syria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan
and Somalia," He added.Nasrallah's appearance comes less than two weeks after the European Union blacklisted Hizbullah’s so-called military wing as a terrorist organization.Nasrallah later claimed that it is the IDF, and not Hizbullah, that should be blacklisted as a terror organization.He said that

Fonterra is the world's fourth-largest dairy company, with annual revenues of about $16 billion.The news comes as a blow to New Zealand's dairy industry, which powers the country's economy. New Zealand exports about 95 percent of its milk.Consumers in China and elsewhere are willing to pay a big premium for New Zealand infant formula because the country has a clean and healthy reputation. Chinese consumers have a special interest after tainted local milk formula killed six babies in 2008.The Centers for Disease Control describes botulism as a rare but sometimes fatal paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin.Fonterra said it has told eight of its customers of the problem, which dates back more than a year, and they were investigating whether any of the affected product is in their supply chains. Fonterra said those companies will initiate any consumer product recalls.At a news conference Saturday, Fonterra repeatedly refused to divulge the companies, countries or specific products affected. Gary Romano, the managing director of Fonterra's New Zealand milk products, said his company supplies raw materials to the eight companies and it is up to them to inform their consumers of what products might be tainted.The company did acknowledge its chief executive, Theo Spierings, planned to fly to China Saturday, in part to deal with the fallout from the botulism scare.
New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said Saturday that New Zealand company Nutricia had used some of the tainted product in its Karicare line of formula for infants aged over 6 months. Nutricia had locked down all five batches of infant formula it believed contained the tainted product, the ministry said. But it advised that parents should buy different Nutricia products or alternative brands until it verified the location of all tainted Nutricia products.China's product quality watchdog issued a statement urging importers of Fonterra dairy products to immediately start recalling the products.The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine also told quality agencies around China to step up inspections of milk products from New Zealand.Romano said the problem was caused by unsterilized pipes at a Waikato factory. He said three batches of whey protein weighing about 42 tons were tainted in May 2012, adding that Fonterra has since cleaned the pipes.The New Zealand ministry says the tainted product has been mixed with other ingredients to form about 1,000 tons of consumer products worldwide.The company said in a release it identified a potential quality problem in March when a product tested positive for the bacteria Clostridium. Many strains of the bacteria are harmless, the company said, and product samples were put through intensive testing over the following months. It said that on July 31 it discovered the presence of a strain of the bacteria that can cause botulism.Romano said Fonterra hasn't received reports of anybody getting sick and added that the problem hasn't affected any fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese or long-lasting heat-treated milk.New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries said it was working with the company to investigate.Spierings, the chief executive, said in the release that food safety was the company's top priority.
"We are acting quickly," he said.
