Rob Ford assault: Woman arrested for allegedly throwing drink at mayor

A woman was arrested for allegedly throwing a drink at Mayor Rob Ford at the Taste of Little Italy event Saturday afternoon.

A woman was arrested and charged with assault for allegedly throwing a drink at Mayor Rob Ford at the Taste of Little Italy event Saturday afternoon.Police said the 27-year-old woman was arrested at around 4:30 p.m. on College St.Paid-duty police officers were already present at the festival and they responded when the woman allegedly threw some sort of juice at the mayor.“They were notified and they investigated and made the arrest,” Toronto Police spokesman Mark Pugash said.Const. Tony Vella said when officers believe there are “reasonable grounds” to lay a charge, they shall.Pugash said there were no injuries in the incident, but he refused to say much more.“We’re not discussing the specifics of the case,” Pugash said. “Someone has been charged with assault and the case is before the Crown.”He said any details will come out in court.Andrew Gidaro said Ford was near the intersection of College St. and Crawford St. with his entourage and about 50 people surrounding him, posing for photos with people.“I saw the drink fly by and hit the ground,” said Gidaro. A Ford staffer pointed out a woman, who took off running, he said. Ford and a staff member took off after her, chasing her down a short distance away, he said.Ford staffers fetched nearby police officers, who spoke with the young woman and Ford before taking her into custody.Witnesses to the incident said Councillor Doug Ford, the mayor’s brother, went over and spoke to the woman. They didn’t know what was said.Zelda Doyle said a young woman “just threw a slushie and ran.”Doyle, who was working at an amusement stand near the incident, said people were shocked.“(The mayor) handled it really well, he just went after her,” said Doyle. “He didn’t look crazy mad, but he wasn’t impressed for sure.”
Witnesses to the aftermath of the incident said the mayor was wiping his face with a napkin while police spoke with a young woman who looked “extremely upset.”Shannon Everett is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall for a charge of assault on July 23 at 11 a.m.Ford’s staff did not respond to calls and emails for comment.The mayor has been the subject of intense media scrutiny over the past several weeks since the Star and U.S. website Gawker reported about a video that appears to show the mayor smoking crack cocaine. Ford has repeatedly denied using crack cocaine and has said there is no video.
