IDF Rabbi tweets prophecy pointing to Messiah's coming

Sunday, November 18, 2012 |  Ryan Jones
Gaza ISRAEL TODAY As more and more Israelis get called up for active military duty in preparation for a possible invasion of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, the chief rabbi of the Israeli army (IDF) has been posting inspirational scriptures to his Twitter feed.Among the scriptures posted yesterday was Zechariah 12:10, a passage Christians and Messianic Jews see as pointing to Yeshua as Messiah."And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication."Due to Twitter's space limitations, the rabbi's post stopped there. The verse continues:"They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."The IDF chief rabbi has posted that verse before, but it seemed to many to be especially timely now as the battle in Gaza rages and the world howls against Israel. It is also timely because of the verse immediately preceding it, Zechariah 12:9:"On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem."The rabbi's posting from Zechariah came just a day after Gaza-based terrorists fired a missile at Jerusalem.

Name of Israel’s anti-Hamas operation has biblical meaning

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor
(CNN) – To English speakers, the name of Israel’s anti-Hamas campaign sounds pretty straightforward: “Operation Pillar of Defense.”But reading the name of the Israeli operation in Hebrew might provoke some head-scratching. In Hebrew, the Israel Defense Forces have branded their recently launched anti-Hamas effort as “Operation Pillar of Cloud.”An IDF spokesman explained that most Israelis would recognize “Pillar of Cloud” as a biblical reference.“It’s based on the pillar of cloud that accompanied the the nation of Israel during the Exodus as they left Egypt and traveling toward Israel,” said Eytan Buchman, head of the North American media desk for the IDF.“They wanted the protection from the troubles of the desert, from robbers and people that would attack them and from snakes and scorpions.”Buchman said the anti-Hamas operation’s Hebrew name is meant to send the message that it is a defensive maneuver.“We are coming up on a decade of rockets being fired indiscriminately at civilians,” Buchman said, referring to Hamas’ actions in southern Israel. The Jewish state’s current military operation, he said, “is a proverbial cloud that is coming to protect you.”The Bible’s first reference to a cloud pillar comes in Exodus 14, which describes the Israelites’ flight from bondage, culminating in Moses’ parting of the Red Sea.“The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them,” reads the passage in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible."It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel,” the passage continues. "And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night.”The idea of the cloud pillar refers to both physical and spiritual protection, according to Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, who leads Ohev Sholom, the National Synagogue in Washington.“The spiritual message here is about praying to God for protection,” said Herzfeld, who heads an Orthodox congregation. “In Exodus, the pillar of cloud is spiritual protection of the Israelis.”Herzfeld said the biblical reference would be instantly recognizable to the many Israelis who have had Jewish educations. The phrase also appears in the Bible’s Book of Pslams, in a verse that says God spoke to Hebrew leaders like Moses, Aaron and Samuel “in the pillar of cloud.”Israel’s choice of Hebrew words has provoked some criticism online."By calling this operation 'Pillar of Cloud,' the IDF are, in a sense, calling themselves God,” tweeted @joshua_eaton, whose Twitter bio describes him as a journalist covering religion and politics. “And they act like they believe that, too."A blogger for the website Gawker, meanwhile, said that calling the Israeli operation a “pillar of cloud” evoked “an all-powerful, vengeful God seeking to demonstrate the primacy of his chosen people, to guide them in their affairs, and to confound their enemies.”“Did Israel launch this attack because there was no other rational route to maintain its security?” asked the Gawker blogger, John Cook. “Or was it pursuing a broader agenda rooted in ancient mysticism?”The IDF’s Buchman said he contacted Cook to challenge his interpretations, saying the Israeli military merely wanted to stress what he called the operation’s defensive nature.“Inside the Bible,” Buchman said, “the cloud was defined as (following people that were) leaving and running away from a full army that had enslaved it.”Buchman noted that previous IDF operations have also used biblical references.
In 2002, he said, the IDF used the name “Operation Noah’s Ark” for the seizure of a Palestinian vessel loaded with rockets, missiles and explosives. And a 2008 IDF operation in Gaza was called “Operation Cast Lead,” which began during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and references a popular Hanukkah song.

OPERATION PILLER OF DEFENSE COULD ALSO BE WHEN SAMSON BROUGHT DOWN THE PILLARS AGAINST ITS ENEMIES AND DESTROYED EVERY LAST ONE OF ISRAELS ENEMIES AT ONE TIME.

JUDGES 16:25-30
25  And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.
26  And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.
27  Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.
28  And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines (PALESTINIANS TODAY) for my two eyes.
29  And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
30  And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

Judge denies bid for nativity scene in California town

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal judge denied a bid by a group of Christian churches on Monday to force a California beachside town to reopen a park to a nearly 60-year-old Christmas-season nativity display it discontinued after atheists upstaged the event last year. The court action grew out of a clash between sponsors of the nativity scenes and a group of atheist activists who competed with the churches for limited space in Santa Monica's biggest public park and managed to dominate last year's holiday displays with anti-religious messages.Following the December 2011 controversy, the Santa Monica City Council voted in June to bar any future unattended private displays in Palisades Park, including Christmas crèches or atheist exhibits, regardless of content. But the church-backed group, the Nativity Scenes Committee, filed suit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in October, seeking to restore it annual collection of diorama scenes depicting the birth of Jesus. The lawsuit says that Santa Monica's newly imposed ban on unattended park displays, a policy the city has billed as "content neutral," poses an unconstitutional infringement on the church group's freedom of speech and expression of religion. But U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins refused the Christian group's request for a preliminary injunction that would have required the city to allow a return of the nativity displays during the holiday season while the case proceeds.Collins said the Christian group retains the right to present its religious exhibit on private property in other locations throughout the city.Barry Rosenbaum, an attorney for the city, told reporters after the hearing that Santa Monica's policy change would withstand judicial scrutiny because the ban "did not look at the content or subject matter of these displays."
But the plaintiff's lawyer, William Becker, vowed to appeal, saying that "religious speech enjoys as much protection in public places as secular speech."Damon Vix, an atheist who led the non-believers' cause but is not a party to the lawsuit, has denied he was seeking to drive the church displays out of the park. He said in a local radio interview last year that his aim "was to try to create what is called equal protection under the law.""I wanted to achieve a presence as large as the Christian groups," he said during an appearance on KPCC-FM.He and supporters won a city lottery last year awarding them 18 of 21 display spots. Two other spaces went to the church group, and a third was allocated for a Hanukkah display.(Reporting by Steve Gorman; Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Lisa Shumaker)

Some cities find small steps key to storm protection

SACO, Maine (Reuters) - In the aftermath of the historic floods caused by Superstorm Sandy, some city leaders have begun to argue for the construction of sea walls capable of shielding the U.S. coastline from ever more intense storms. But in Saco, Maine, storm protection comes in a far less glamorous package. Along what used to be Surf Street, owners of beachfront houses are jacking their homes up to allow storm surges from Saco Bay to flow underneath them. The northeastern city of 19,000 people has reason to be wary of the water - over the past decade it has washed away six homes and in 2007 took several blocks of Surf Street itself. Today the street is a gravel track along a wall of dishwasher-size chunks of rock built by the city to blunt the force of storm waves. The road "was damaged several times and we repaired it," said Dick Lambert, Saco code enforcement officer. But after a 2007 nor'easter swept away much of it, "We said, ‘We're spending good money after bad. This time we're going to stop.'"The Saco City Council in May also adopted a resolution requiring owners of waterfront buildings who rebuild or do substantial renovations to raise them 3 feet above forecast 100-year flood levels - a projection of low-lying areas likely to be flooded once a century on average.Saco is one of numerous U.S. municipalities and states looking to small steps to fend off the higher seas and more frequent storms forecast to accompany climate change. Sandy's destructiveness is only likely to increase those efforts."People want to look to a big, bold project they can point to that will make people feel safe," such as sea walls, said Adam Freed, a Nature Conservancy director who until August was one of New York City's top officials on sustainability. But those big projects, he added, do not guarantee safety. They may also be prohibitively expensive at a time when federal, state and city budgets are under immense strain, with lawmakers looking for ways to rein in spending. At the national level, debates about higher waters and more intense storms get caught up in the politics of climate change, but for coastal communities the discussion is a simpler one - what do to about the more frequent storms their residents may face."Cities have been leaders on this," Freed said. "Just like there's no Democratic or Republican way to keep the streets clean, there is no Democratic or Republican way to protect a city. There is a pragmatic, practical way of doing it."Saco's new rule grew out of a 2006 state report that urged Maine's coastal communities to prepare for the sea level to rise by two feet by 2100.Diane Doyle, a Maine contractor who on a recent morning was overseeing renovations to a waterfront house her firm had raised to meet the new standards, said that more frequent storms have caught area residents' attention."Even for houses that aren't in the flood zone, we are doing more to be prepared down the road," Doyle said, noting that when she renovates houses that do not have to be raised by law, she still encourages homeowners to consider installing ground-level floors that can withstand water.
FEW ARE PREPARED
Despite the devastation that Katrina brought to New Orleans in 2005 and now Sandy has brought to coastal communities in New York and New Jersey, few cities have even finished planning for climate change, a recent study by JoAnn Carmin of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found.Just 13 percent of U.S. cities had completed such an assessment, according to the study, which in total looked at 468 cities worldwide.Planners said they had few resources available to help their cities adapt to a changing climate - not just the threat of more storms - with a large number listing securing funds as a major challenge to their ability to plan. Those budget problems mean that costly solutions, like New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn's proposal to build a sea wall system at a cost of $20 billion, are unlikely to see the light of day, experts said."It's not just about technical solutions, it's not just about pouring money into infrastructure, but it's also about culture change and cultural expectations," said Brian Holland, climate-change program director at ICLEI.Other simple steps cities can take include using low-lying coastal areas as parks, which can be flooded and return to normal use once waters recede, or moving waste-water pumping stations to higher elevations where they are less likely to be swamped and release effluent, Holland said.Up and down the U.S. East Coast, local officials have adopted similar small-scale reforms that can make it easier for their residents to weather and recover from more frequent flood events without straining local budgets."There are a lot of stresses on communities and they have very limited resources and staff and also dollars for engineering," said Julia Knisel, coastal shoreline and floodplain manager for the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. "It is an incremental process."Massachusetts is offering credits of permit fees for developers of some coastal properties that raise their buildings above minimum state standards.Maryland has adopted regulations requiring coastal communities looking to defend themselves from flooding to do so with dunes and native plants, which can soften the impact of storm waves, rather than by building vertical sea walls. In Freeport, Maine, town officials are considering installing one-way valves on storm sewers to prevent ocean waters from rushing into them and flooding parts of the city during storms."It's challenging because a lot of it is not high-profile, amazingly visible, politically winning projects," said MIT's Carmin. "Storm drains are just not a popular political platform. They're necessary, but people want to hear about education, about other things, they don't want to hear, 'We're going to improve our storm drain system.'"
RENAMING THE 100-YEAR STORM
Some experts argue that it is time to rethink not only the assumptions underlying 100-year and 500-year flood projections, but to change the way those risk assessments are communicated."If you tell me I can win the lottery once every 100 years, I'll probably never play. But if you tell me I have a 1 percent chance of winning every year, that puts me in a different position," said Louis Gritzo, a vice president at FM Global, a commercial property insurer that takes an engineering bent in its underwriting. "The way that risk is communicated is extremely important, as that influences the way businesses and municipalities make their decisions on where to invest their resources."(Reporting By Scott Malone; Editing by Martin Howell)

EU shadow banking assets worth €17 trillion

19.11.12 @ 09:28 By Nikolaj Nielsen
BRUSSELS - The eurozone has the world's second largest shadow banking system after the United States, with assets worth some €17.2 trillion in 2011."The US' share of the global shadow banking system has declined from 44 percent in 2005 to 35 percent in 2011. This decline has been mirrored mostly by an increase in the shares of the UK and the euro area," said the Basel, Swizterland-based Financial Stability Board (FSB) in a report released on Sunday (18 November). The UK takes the largest share in Europe with €7 trillion, while the US, in comparison, has €18 trillion. The FSB, which monitors international financial sector policies, says such credit transactions "made outside the normal banking system" have continued to increase in size after the 2008-11 financial crisis. The transactions are often unregulated and present higher risks when compared to traditional banking activities.Companies involved in shadow banking specialise in anything from capital venture, securities markets, pension and mutual funds. In some cases, they represent a significant share of financial activities when compared to standard commercial banks. Also known as non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), shadow banking companies compete with the commercial banks in areas like providing credit to small businesses.“The Netherlands (45 percent) and the US (35 percent) are the two jurisdictions where NBFIs are the largest sector relative to other financial institutions in their systems," says the FSB.The NBFIs in the eurozone, for its part, is around 30 percent. The assets generated from such institutions are large. For the eurozone, they represent 111 percent of its total GDP.In the UK, it is the equivalent of 370 percent of its GDP, while the Netherlands tops out at 490 percent."Part of this concentration can be explained by the fact that these jurisdictions are significant international financial centres that host activities of foreign-owned institutions," notes the FSB.Overall assets in the global shadow banking system had seen a rapid increase just before the crisis, rising from €20 trillion in 2002 to €48.5 trillion in 2007.The total then declined to €46 trillion in 2008 "but increased subsequently to reach €52.5 trillion in 2011."

BERLIN - Moody's on Monday (19 November) became the second ratings agency to strip France of its top rating, citing continued economic woes and lack of competitiveness, a blow to President Francois Hollande who tried to fix the problem with higher taxes. The downgrade of the French government's projected capacity to pay back its debt comes after Standard&Poor's in January - still during the presidency of Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy - was the first of the three top rating agencies to slash France's triple-A status.Moody's said the move was due to France's "sustained loss of competitiveness" and "long-standing rigidities of its labour, goods and service markets."The International Monetary Fund earlier this month also warned France it may fall behind Italy and Spain on labour market reforms and competitiveness, as French exports are shrinking compared to other eurozone countries, especially Germany.A report commissioned by the French government and drafted by industrialist Louis Gallois issued a similar warning, suggesting "shock therapy" was needed to bring down labour costs and re-balance the economic relationship to Germany.French finance minister Pierre Moscovici on Monday said the downgrade "does not put into question the fundamentals of the French economy and is a motivation to pursue structural reforms."Elected on an anti-austerity ticket, Socialist President Francois Hollande has sought to avoid harsh social welfare or wage cuts. In a reforms package passed in earlier this autumn, the main measures were tax hikes for the rich and on capital gains by companies. An internet movement called "the pigeons" warned that the new taxation is stifling investments in start-ups and small enterprises succeeded in rolling back some of the measures.
Hollande also sent his German-speaking Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, to Berlin for talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel. In a joint press conference last Thursday, the two seemed to be singing for the same hymn sheet. They agreed more reforms are needed and that France has to boost its competitiveness. Ayrault said Paris remains fully committed to bring down the budget deficit to 3 percent of GDP by next year.Merkel, for her part, said she was not going to "give grades" to France on its reforms, even though Berlin is "observing" what is going on there. She also said that the Franco-German relationship was above the rival political families their two leaders are from. It was "normal" for the French Socialists to support her challenger in next year's general elections, just as she had supported Nicolas Sarkozy who lost to Hollande.
"Once elected, however, we are all working very well together, this is something we have practised for decades," Merkel said, noting that Jacques Chirac and Helmut Kohl had also hailed from different political parties.

Rocket fired at Jerusalem and south takes beating, but ground op off the table — for now

Missile falls somewhere south of capital; over 60 rockets fired at cities around south; Netanyahu to give diplomacy 24 hours before possible land-based invasion; Hillary Clinton and Ban Ki-moon on way to region as diplomacy efforts ramp up

Sirens sounded for the second time since the start of Operation Pillar of Defense in Jerusalem Tuesday, hours after the government said it would hold off on a ground operation for 24 hours to give diplomacy a chance. Among the big names visiting the region to try to push through talks are US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Tuesday morning saw the south pummeled with over 60 rockets, including several direct hits on homes and cars, and a soldier moderately injured. In Gaza, Israel continued to strike targets. The Times of Israel is live blogging developments. Press “Refresh” for the latest updates.

Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon moves its emergency room to its fortified basement after shrapnel from a rocket that was intercepted by Iron Dome lands near the hospital’s maternity ward.
The IDF is initiating an increased tempo of strikes in Gaza, especially at the location of the recent rocket launch toward the Jerusalem area, according to news reports. Walla reports 30 locations are targeted.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague calls on Israel to obey international law and avoid civilian casualties. Hague slams Israel’s policy of illegal settlements, saying that it “risks paralyzing” negotiations “could have serious consequences for the PA.”“There is no military solution to the conflict in Gaza, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Hague says, emphasizing that a two-state solution is needed, and “time is running out.”
Three rockets land in the Eshkol region, with at least one hitting a building, reports say.
Hamas says the missile fired at Jerusalem was a M75 Iranian-made missile assembled in Gaza, according to Al Jazeera.
Preamble: Jerusalemites scramble for cover as a siren rings out through the city and surrounding area, followed by a rocket falling somewhere near Bethlehem south of the capital. Earlier in the day, the south of country was pummeled by over 60 rockets, including several that hit homes. One soldier was moderately injured by a mortar in the Eshkol region.Israel is still weighing whether to expand the operation into a ground war but officials said they would give diplomacy at least 24 hours to work, as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN head Ban Ki-moon head to the region. In the meantime, the IDF continued to hit targets in the Gaza Strip, and the head of Hamas’ armed wing warned Israel against a ground operation.

MAYBE ITS ISRAELS RIGHT TO NUKE GAZA AND ELIMINATE THE ARAB MURDERERS FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH.NEVER TO BE HEARD FROM AGAIN.NEVER EVER TO HASSLE ISRAEL AGAIN.

Rocket attacks on Israel ‘are not terror, they’re our right,’ Gaza activist says

Palestinians don’t want an ‘absurd ceasefire just like the last times,’ Sarah Salibi, a 21-year-old from Jabalya, tells The Times of Israel

November 20, 2012, 1:08 am 13-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

As residents of southern Israel describe the terror of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip exploding in and around their homes, 21-year-old Palestinian blogger and activist Sarah Salibi described terrifying circumstances in Gaza to the Times of Israel on Monday.“The situation is terrifying, it has been this way since the beginning of the situation in Gaza six days ago,” Salibi, a resident of Jabalya, said. “They’ve given us no time to relax, explosions are everywhere.”As the Israeli Air Force carried out its airstrikes against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip, she recounted that she and her family cowered together in one room of their house as five missiles struck a building down the street. “We do not have shelters to go to,” she said, and the thud of the explosions was “very, very horrific.” The glass of windows throughout the neighborhood shattered.
“Every few minutes there’s another explosion. We even stopped counting.”“Everyone in Gaza feels the same way: they are angry, they are sad… Everybody in Gaza wants this to end, because we’re tired of explosions. We can’t sleep.”When asked whether she thought the IDF was doing its best not to harm civilians, Salibi rejected the possibility. “I don’t think that will ever happen. Israel is always targeting civilians. They claim they don’t… but that’s not true because most of the casualties are civilians. We will never believe that.”
Palestinian medical sources said Monday that Israeli strikes have killed 105 Palestinians, including 53 civilians, and wounded some 840 people, including 225 children. As for international support for a ceasefire, Salibi said that most Gazans “stopped believing in [the efficacy] of international laws a long time ago, they are not helping Gaza.” One factor she said does protect the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip is “The Resistance” — Hamas and other Palestinian groups. The majority of Gazans support Hamas for defending itself against Israel and for defending the people of Gaza, she said.Even Hamas’s firing of two rockets at Jerusalem, the third holiest city in Islam, found widespread support among residents of the Gaza Strip, who cheered the news, she said. She added that Jerusalem is occupied by Israel and that resistance is the only way Gazans will ever be able to visit the city she pointed out they have no access to.When asked by The Times of Israel whether there was concern for the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Jerusalem who could have — and indeed nearly were — harmed by the missiles that missed their mark, she said that “Israelis are the [largest] population in Jerusalem, and the rockets are symbolic because they harm nothing.”Since the beginning of the Operation Pillar of Defense, rockets fired from the Gaza Strip have killed three Israelis, seriously injured two, moderately injured four, lightly injured four, and over 200 have been treated for shock, according to Magen David Adom.Although Salibi, an English Literature major at Gaza City’s al-Azhar University, said she doesn’t follow the news of al-Aqsa or Hamas on television, she did profess ideological affinity with the Islamist group.“The only way the Palestinians can liberate occupied Palestine is though armed resistance, we believe, because negotiations… are absurd,” she said. “We don’t believe in negotiations, anyway, and we only believe in armed resistance.”“The Palestinian people are fed up with Israeli aggression and massacres of civilians and innocents in Gaza.”She also denied charges by Israeli politicians and the IDF that Hamas uses children as human shields, retorting that Israel uses this accusation to justify killing children.Regarding rumors of a possible Egyptian-negotiated ceasefire emerging between Israel and Hamas in the coming days, Salibi dismissed the possibility of Hamas or the Palestinians in Gaza accepting “an absurd ceasefire just like the last times.”“This time I think it will be different.” Gazans want a ceasefire based on guarantees of an end to “the siege of Gaza” and the targeted killings of “political leaders and civilians.”As for an end to the rocket fire at civilians in southern Israel, Salibi said “we believe this is not called terror attacks. [Palestinians in Gaza] believe these are not terror attacks, they are our right, it is guaranteed by international law.”“As long as Israel is committing crimes against Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, Hamas will not stop, of course.”

Hamas Leader: Israel Bluffing; ‘I Dare You to Invade’

Hamas’ leader Khaled Mashaal charges an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza is a bluff. “If you wanted to launch it, you would have done it.”By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 11/20/2012, 2:02 PM-INN

Hamas’ supreme leader Khaled Mashaal charged in Cairo that Israel is bluffing by preparing for a ground incursion in Gaza. “If you wanted to launch it, you would have done it,” he told journalists Monday.
The following day, Hamas’s senior military commander Mohammed Deif broadcast a rare audio message on Hamas’ Al Aqsa television and warned, Israel will "pay a heavy price" if it launches a ground operation in Gaza.Mashaal told a press conference in Cairo Monday that Israel is using preparations for a ground incursion as a threat to “dictate its own terms and force us into silence.”Despite chatter by Arab media of an “imminent” truce, the IDF said it is continuing to prepare for a ground incursion to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza. The military has massed tens of thousands of soldiers near the Gaza borders and has moved hundreds of tanks and armored personnel carriers to the area.AFP reported that Israel has put a ground maneuver on hold while United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attempt to hammer out a ceasefire agreement.Israel has made it clear that it cannot agree to any ceasefire without guarantees that there will be no more mortar and missile attacks on Israel. Previous guarantees have never been fulfilled, and dozens of ceasefires the past years have not lasted more than a few weeks, and sometimes not even a few hours.Based on past experience, Hamas cannot meet that condition even if it wants to because of the preponderance of rival terrorist organizations in Gaza.Mashaal said Hamas demands that Israel meet Hamas’ legitimate demands and refrain “from its aggression, assassinations and invasions, and for the siege over Gaza to be ended.”Agreeing to Hamas' terms would in effect leave Israeli civilians as sitting ducks for “ticking bomb” terrorists preparing attack on Israel. It also would leave Gaza open to import all of the advanced weapons it wants by the sea, where Israel has placed a maritime embargo that the United Nations has determined is legal.

Wartime Smuggling of Long-Range Missiles from Hizbullah to Hamas

Hizbullah is supplying long-range missiles to Hamas even as Israel’s Iron Dome system blows them up, a Lebanese newspaper claims.By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu First Publish: 11/20/2012, 10:27 AM-INN

Hizbullah is supplying long-range missiles to Hamas even as Israel’s Iron Dome system blows them up after launching, a Lebanese newspaper claims with pride. The claim is unsubstatiated by other sources, but if true, implies the compliance of Egypt. The Al-Ahkbar website and newspaper, which previously published WikiLeaks material before they were released, claimed that Israel has not shut down the supply route of missiles for Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Gaza."A considerable amount of long-range missiles from Hizbullah” has reached Gaza terrorists in the past several days, according to Al-Akhbar.Hizbullah sources sad they are focusing on transporting large quantities of long-range missiles, many of which they claim to have reached Gaza during Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense. It said that Iranian Revolutionary Guard units specializing in smuggling weapons from Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Sudan, and other countries are on “high alert.”The weapons smuggling route begins in Iranian or Syrian ports, and then continues to Sudan and the Sinai Peninsula. Hundreds of smuggling tunnels at the Gaza-Egyptian border enable easy smuggling of missiles into Gaza.Israel left the Philadelphia Corridor on the Gaza-Egyptian border,  where the tunnels begin, as part of the "disengagement" from Gaza. This aroused fierce dispute in Israel at the time, with those opposing the move saying, as has since been proven true, that Egypt would not stop the weapons smuggling.
The ceasefire that Israel accepted after the Operation Cast Lead in January 2006 was to be accompanied with monitoring systems to prevent smuggling, but the United States and European Union did not fulfill their promises. Israeli military officials have said that Hamas has exploited the opportunity to stockpile an arsenal of weapons, which include medium range Fajr missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, as well as anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles. The Israel bombing of Fajr missile storage sites has inflicted damage on the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza, and Al-Akhbar wrote, “Resistance factions are currently assessing the damage inflicted on the long-range missile arsenals Israel claims to have destroyed in the raids following the assassination of Hamas military chief Ahmad al-Jaabari.”It added that a “large number of ‘strategic’ arsenals are still safe.”Hizbullah’s increased ability to supply arms is a result of the establishment of the special smuggling unit of the Guards, according to the newspaper. It said that Egyptian and Iranian governments have been an obstacle to the smuggling operations, but Hizbullah worked out a communications channel between the Guards, the Syrian army, Hizbullah and Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terrorist groups.“Since 2005, the weapons transfer units have succeeded in sending numerous types of light and medium weapons, mortars, medium and long-range missiles, as well as several types of ammunition and materials that can be used to manufacture rockets and bombs,” Al-Akbar reported. In the same year, the Israeli government removed all soldiers and military posts from Gaza following the expulsion of more than 9,000 Jews from their homes, a move that gave Gaza terrorists a free hand to operate the weapons supply system.

World pressure for Gaza truce intensifies

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The U.N. chief called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton headed to the region with a message that escalation of the conflict was in nobody's interest.Nevertheless, Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rocket fire continued for a seventh day.For the second time since the fighting began, a rocket was launched at Jerusalem, triggering warning sirens. Police said it fell in an open area in the occupied West Bank and did not cause any casualties. Hamas's armed wing said in Gaza it fired the projectile.Egypt was trying to broker a truce between Israel and Gaza's ruling Hamas movement. An Egyptian intelligence source said "there is still no breakthrough and Egypt is working to find middle ground".Israel's military on Tuesday targeted about 100 sites in Gaza, including ammunition stores and the Gaza headquarters of the National Islamic Bank. Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry said six Palestinians were killed.Israeli police said more than 60 rockets were fired from Gaza by mid-day, and 25 of the projectiles were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome system. The military said an officer was wounded. Some 115 Palestinians have died in a week of fighting, the majority of them civilians, including 27 children, hospital officials said. Three Israelis died last week when a rocket from Gaza struck their house. In Cairo, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate ceasefire and said an Israeli ground operation in Gaza would be a "dangerous escalation" that must be avoided. He had held talks in Cairo with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby and Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil before travelling to Israel for discussions with its leader, Benjamin Netanyahu. Ban planned to return to Egypt on Wednesday to see Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, who was unavailable on Tuesday due to the death of his sister.Israel's leaders weighed the benefits and risks of sending tanks and infantry into the densely populated coastal enclave two months before an Israeli election, and indicated they would prefer a diplomatic path backed by world powers, including U.S. President Barack Obama, the European Union and Russia.
Clinton was going to the Middle East for talks in Jerusalem, Ramallah and Cairo to try to calm the conflict. An Israeli source said she was expected to meet Netanyahu on Wednesday."Her visits will build on American engagement with regional leaders over the past days - including intensive engagement by President Obama with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Morsi - to support de-escalation of violence and a durable outcome that ends the rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns and restores a broader calm," a State Department official said.Netanyahu and his top ministers debated their next moves in a meeting that lasted into the early hours of Tuesday."Before deciding on a ground invasion, the prime minister intends to exhaust the diplomatic move in order to see if a long-term ceasefire can be achieved," a senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said after the meeting.A delegation of nine Arab ministers, led by the Egyptian foreign minister, visted Gaza in a further signal of heightened Arab solidarity with the Palestinians.
EGYPT KEY PLAYER
Any diplomatic solution may involve Egypt, Gaza's other neighbor and the biggest Arab nation, where the ousting of U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak and the election of Mursi is part of a dramatic reshaping of the Middle East wrought by Arab uprisings and now affecting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Mursi, whose Muslim Brotherhood was mentor to the founders of Hamas, on Monday took a call from Obama, who told him Hamas must stop rocket fire into Israel - effectively endorsing Israel's stated aim in launching the offensive last week. Obama also said he regretted civilian deaths - which have been predominantly among the Palestinians."The two leaders discussed ways to de-escalate the situation in Gaza, and President Obama underscored the necessity of Hamas ending rocket fire into Israel," the White House said, adding that the U.S. leader had also called Netanyahu."In both calls, President Obama expressed regret for the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives."Mursi has warned Netanyahu of serious consequences from a ground invasion of the kind that killed more than 1,400 people in Gaza four years ago. But he has been careful not to alienate Israel, with whom Egypt's former military rulers signed a peace treaty in 1979, or Washington, a major aid donor to Egypt.Egypt's Kandil told Reuters a ceasefire was possible: "I think we are close, but the nature of this kind of negotiation, (means) it is very difficult to predict."After Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal laid out demands in Cairo that Israel take the first step in restoring calm, and warned Netanyahu that a ground war in Gaza could wreck his re-election prospects in January, a senior Israeli official denied a Hamas assertion that the prime minister had asked for a truce."Whoever started the war must end it," Meshaal said, referring to Israel's assassination from the air on Wednesday of Hamas's Gaza military chief, a move that followed a scaling up of rocket fire onto Israeli towns over several weeks and attacks against Israeli troops along the border. An official close to Netanyahu told Reuters: "We would prefer to see a diplomatic solution that would guarantee the peace for Israel's population in the south. If that is possible, then a ground operation would no longer be required."Fortified by the ascendancy of fellow Islamists in Egypt and elsewhere, and courted by Sunni Arab leaders in the Gulf keen to draw the Palestinian group away from old ties to Shi'ite Iran, Hamas has tested its room for maneuver, as well as longer-range rockets that have reached the Tel Aviv metropolis.Hamas said four-year-old twin boys had died with their father when their house in the town of Beit Lahiya was struck from the air during the night. Health officials had reported the children's mother also died but later said she was critically wounded. Neighbors said the occupants were not involved with militant groups.Israel had no immediate comment on that attack. It says it takes extreme care to avoid civilians and accuses Hamas and other militant groups of deliberately placing Gaza's 1.7 million people in harm's way by placing rocket launchers among them.Nonetheless, fighting Israel, whose right to exist Hamas refuses to recognize, is popular with many Palestinians and has kept the movement competitive with the secular Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who remains in the West Bank after losing Gaza to Hamas in a civil war five years ago."Hamas and the others, they're our sons and our brothers, we're fingers on the same hand," said 55-year-old Faraj al-Sawafir, whose home was blasted by Israeli forces. "They fight for us and are martyred, they take losses and we sacrifice too."In scenes recalling Israel's 2008-2009 winter invasion of the coastal enclave, tanks, artillery and infantry have massed in field encampments along the sandy, fenced-off border. But Israel's shekel rose on Tuesday for a second straight session while Tel Aviv shares gained for a third day in a row on what dealers attributed to investor expectation that a ceasefire deal was imminent.(Additional reporting by Marwa Awad in Cairo, Writing by Jeffrey Heller)

A senior Russian commander has called for closer cooperation between Iranian and Russian naval forces, saying he is interested to visit Iran Navy forces present in the Caspian Sea.“There is just a wish to see how the Iranian flotilla is developing,” Russian Caspian Flotilla Commander Rear Admiral Sergei Alekminski said on Sunday, IRNA reported. Alekminski said a fleet of Russian ships and frigates would pay a visit to an Iranian port in 2013. He also said that there were no particular relations between Russian and Iranian ships at present, reminding that this would be the first visit in 40 years. On October 29, Iran Navy’s 22nd fleet of warships called at a Sudanese northeastern port in the Red Sea, in line with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strategy of expanding its naval presence in international waters.
Iran's Navy has been multiplying its naval presence in the international waters since last year, deploying vessels to the Indian Ocean and dispatching, in February 2011, two ships via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. In addition, in line with the international efforts to combat piracy, the Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard the vessels involved in maritime trade, especially the ships and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran. Gaza Conflict: Are US interests in the region undermined?

Washington : DC : USA | Nov 20, 2012 at 5:04 AM PST By send a private message
With the emergence of the Arab Spring, there was hope that democracy would emerge all over the Middle East. Unfortunately Syria's dictator has stubbornly held on to power, supported by Iran and Russia, which have their own interests. The fledgling governing authority in Libya is unable to provide security in that region. The UN Security Council has been rendered ineffective.
The conflict between Israel and Gaza has resulted in 113 killed and more than 825 wounded. Over the weekend Turkey and Egypt attempeted to broker a ceasefire. In the end both Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi and Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan ermerged in support of Hamas and declared Israel a terror state. With the danger of a ground war in Gaza, President Obama was prompted to dispatch Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Jerusalem, Cairo and Ramallah. Clinton is prevented from meeting with Hamas leaders, since Hamas has been designated a terror organization. What Clinton can achieve is questionable. The Palestinian Authority is sidelined from the events in Gaza and exercises no control over Hamas.
"On Monday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, which has frequently served as a moderate voice in the region, described Israel as a “terrorist state” and condemned the airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Islamist group Hamas. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has warned Israel against a ground invasion and thrown his support behind Hamas’s leadership, sending his prime minister to Gaza." Washington Post .Clinton's aim is to difuse the crisis and put pressure on Israel to avoid a ground war. The elusion that she can broker a peace deal can be discounted, she can only minimize the expansion to a ground war.According to the Jordan Times, Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi announced on Tuesday, ahead of Clinton's visit, that the Israeli aggression would end within a few hours and that Egyptian brokered efforts would produce positive results. Ministers of ten Arab states crossed into Gaza to show solidarity with Hamas."The farce of the Israeli aggression will end today, Tuesday, and the efforts to reach a ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israelis will produce positive results within a few hours," the Egyptian president said, according to the report. It is fair to assume that Israel is now surrounded by enemies. This puts the United States into a delicate position. Many experts believe that the Gaza conflict is a proxy war between Israel and Iran and that Israel is trying to clean up its backyard to clear the way for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. That is not too far fedged.Hamas is now in posession of the Fajr 5 rocket, which has the capability to reach Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israel's Iron Star Missile Defence System has been able to intercept rockets and missiles from Gaza.Iran has been able to ship supplies and weapons through Iraq to Syria, which in turn have been smuggled to Gaza via Egypt.UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon traveled to the region on Monday urging that the hositilies stop, but to no avail. It is increasingly clear that US influence in the region is dwindling. An Egyptian official expressed frustration that the United States has not been able to reign in Israel. While the United States has publicly declared that Israel has a right to defend itself, it has no doubt pressured Israel to stop its attacks into Gaza. The Israeli war machine depends on resupply and maintenance contracts from the US. This will probably be used to dissuade Israel from mounting a ground attack.Prior to the dispatch of Clinton, US diplomacy was conducted by phone, where President Obama called both Morsi and Netanyahu to urge deescalation of the crisis. While Turkish, Qatar and Egyptian made attempts to broker a ceasefire, the US did not back any particular plan.“We don’t practice diplomacy from the podium. We have been very clear that Israel has a right of self-defense. We’ve been very clear that rockets continue to be fired and land on Israel. We’ve been very clear that we are working to try to get this conflict deescalated. We have been very clear about our concern for the civilians and innocents on both sides who are getting caught in this, said State Department spokewoman Victoria Nuland. The US has treaded a thin line with both Turkey and Egypt. While it supported peace negotiations, the US has been careful not to criticize their public support of Hamas. This is a dire situation, which also plays out in the UN. A joint statement drafted by the Arab League and circulated by Morocco is bogged down in discussion.A ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli Defence Forces could ignite a fire in the Middle East in an all out conflict. The crisis in the Middle East is deepening and it is doubtful that Clinton can achieve any movement toward peace, although she can pressure Israel to practice restraint. There appears to be little doubt that US influence in the region is dwindling.Source: Washington Post

Mortars hit Syria information ministry, clashes erupt in capital

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two mortar rounds struck Syria's Information Ministry building in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, state television said, causing some damage but no casualties.Syrian TV blamed "terrorists" for the attack, referring to insurgents who have been battling to topple President Bashar al-Assad since last year.
The rebels have been trying to take their 20-month-old revolt to the heart of Damascus, Assad's seat of power, and have gained footholds in its southern outskirts and in many surrounding suburbs. Some fighters said the mortars were fired from the urban rebel stronghold of Daraya, which Assad's forces had been bombarding from the air for days.Fierce fighting has since erupted in Daraya, which is on the southwestern edge of Damascus. The rebels in the area have deployed near the main southern highway leading out of the capital city, opposition activists said.Elite Republican Guard troops backed by tanks were trying to storm Daraya but met with fierce resistance from rebels there, who have regrouped after a big army offensive on the area killed an estimated 1,100 people six weeks ago.Fighters around the capital have focused in recent months on carrying out high-profile rocket and car bomb attacks on government buildings that are often more symbolic than lethal. The exception was a major bomb attack that killed at least four high-level government officials in July.Activist Samir al-Shami said the mortar rounds that hit the Information Ministry building, which is located in the central Mezzeh district of the capital, may actually have been aimed at a football stadium nearby."We believe the stadium is being used by the army and has been used to fire mortars on the rebels, so it may have been the target. The rebels may have been responding to army fire," al-Shami told Reuters on Skype.Assad's forces appeared to be on the alert for intensified attacks this week, which the opposition has dubbed "March to Damascus Week".Extra checkpoints have been set up around the capital and security forces have placed new restrictions on the movement of residents in some parts of the capital.
Residents say that many families have been planning to leave their homes, out of fear of military campaigns being prepared on either side. The revolt in Syria, which began as peaceful street protests, has spread across the country and evolved into a civil war in which activists say more than 38,000 people have been killed.

Iran official: Gaza fighters need to be 'equipped'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran says Palestinians in the Gaza Strip should be "equipped" to defend themselves against Israel. But Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast refused to comment on Israeli allegations that Iran is already sending arms to Gaza, which has been under Israel's attack since last week in retaliation for rockets fired by Hamas into Israel. At least 113 Palestinians have been killed — nearly half of them civilians.Iran is a major supporter of the militant groups such as Islamic Jihad and Hamas, which controls Gaza.Mehmanparast also said on Tuesday that that Israel should be put on trial for war crimes over the latest offensive.Iran has previously denied it had directly supplied Hamas with Iranian-made Fajr-5 missiles that have hit near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
