The eight day festival that consists of Sukkot and Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah comes to an end Thursday night, bringing an end to the holiday season and starting the regular year.In Israel, a popular expression is Acharei Hachagim - lets' wait till after the holidays - as the entire country seems to put off whatever it can from Rosh Hashanah until the day after Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah.With the Sukkot holiday marking the last of three yearly pilgrimage festivals to Jerusalem and the Holy Temple - preceded by Pesach and Shavuot - and also the end of the Tishrei holidays, Shmini Atzeret, which begins Wednesday evening, is mandated in the Torah as a final encore holiday.It is an extra day, celebrated on the day immediately following Hoshana Raba which is the last and seventh day of Sukkot.G-d feels for the Jewish people, who want just one more day of joy before returning home from Jerusalem for the winter season and grants it to them.In Israel, Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined in a one day holiday. Outside of israel, they are separate and celebrated for two days - Shmini Atzeret on the first day, and Simchat Torah on the second.

On Shmini Atzeret, the solemn prayer for winter rains is said, as well as the Yizkor prayer for deceased parents.The Simchat Torah final holiday marks the conclusion - and starting again - of the annual public weekly readings of the Five Books of Moses, and commemorates the supreme Jewish idea of Torah study in general. Hours-long dancing with the Torah (known as hakafot) in synagogues, yeshivot, and even in the streets marks the day in Jewish communities around the world.Every male in the synagogue gets called to the Torah, necessitating, in large congregations, using several scrolls and repeating the reading several times. Taking advantage of the Occupy Wall Street protests that have hit the world in recent weeks, a group of about 40 people from the Jewish Women for Justice in Israel/Palestine joined together on Tuesday for an anti-Israel rally and march in Boston.The Daily Free Press, a student newspaper at Boston University, reported that the demonstration, entitled Occupy Boston — Not Palestine, protested U.S. support of Israeli military presence in Palestine.One of the organizers of the demonstration, Anna Shenk, told the Daily Free Press that she came to give presence and voice to the Palestinians.I lived in Jordan for two years, working to provide food and clothing to Palestinian refugees,Shenk said. I learned firsthand what being chased out of your home does to you, no matter who you are, and it’s outrageous.As an excuse for the protest, the group argued that the U.S. spends more than $8 million in taxes on military aid and support to Israel per day.Protest participant Nancy Murray said that the occupation of Palestine has gone on for far too long.

Americans, open your eyes, she said.It’s because of your tax dollars that Israel occupies Palestine. We pay $8 million in military aid for Israel to do whatever the hell it wants.Murray added, We need to build houses in the U.S. instead of destroying houses in Palestine. The occupation has gone on for so long because the U.S. vetoed 41 valid UN Security Council resolutions. They’ve given Israel the green light to abuse human rights.Some protesters at the demonstration said they were concerned with the issue of violating human rights. One demonstrator, Anne Glick, accused Israel of violating human rights by building a fence to keep in the Palestinian Authority Arabs.What the U.S. is doing is taking away human rights, Glick told the Daily Free Press. The U.S. has to stop giving aid to Israel. $8 million of our tax dollars every day go to stop the Palestinians from living correctly.Glick failed to mention the endless terror attacks originating from the Arab side, which is what forces Israel to build the fence in the first place.Earlier this week it was reported that the Occupy Wall Street protests were also used by some to bring up the age-old Jewish Conspiracy theme.One protester claimed that the people who run Wall Street are guilty of crimes against humanity. A small ethnic group consists of…almost all bankers on Wall Street are Jewish.There is a conspiracy in this country, and Jews control the media, the finances…. Commission fast-tracks EU project bonds to spur growth 19.10.11 @ 17:59 By Valentina Pop

Brussels - The EU commission on Wednesday (19 October) proposed that project bonds worth €230 million be kicked off next year instead of in 2014, so as to help investments in transport, energy and broadband connections as national budgets are drained of cash.In anticipation of a Connecting Europe package of initiatives worth €50 billion from 2014 on - if member states agree - the project bonds will be loan guarantees managed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help construction companies or governments in financing large-scale infrastructure projects.What we are doing is advancing something foreseen only from 2014 on, precisely because in the current economic circumstances it's important to use some financial instruments at EU level,commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso said during a press conference.The pilot phase is supposed to focus on five-10 projects already at a relatively developed stage of bidding or requiring refinancing after the construction phase in the sectors of transport, energy and broadband. EIB and EU financing combined, the €230 million re-distributed from transport and innovation budgets are expected to mobilise investments of up to €4.6 billion,he said.Asked how he would ensure that member states do not push for their national pet projects to be funded under this scheme, Barroso said he trusted the EIB's long-standing expertise in selecting projects that make sense from a European point of views.

With a line-up of three commissioners each presenting the benefits of such large-scale investments in transport, energy and broadband, Barroso's call for investments and growth-oriented policies comes three days ahead of a key summit aimed at finding solutions to the deepening sovereign debt crisis and after worldwide protests against austerity and bank bail-outs.Today's project bonds launch is a welcome and overdue step in the right direction. It is right to start a pilot phase now rather than wait until 2014 to mobilise private investment, Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the Liberal group in the European Parliament and a supporter of EU-driven investments said in a statement.Economists however poured some cold water on the initiative.It's the famous drop of water on a very hot stone, Carsten Brzeski, a senior economist with ING bank told this website. Even as investment-stimulating measures are a good thing in principle, they will never be big enough to restore growth, he said.Brzeski also dismissed Barroso's theory that EU funds can be used to ease up Greece's lending problems.These are such minor steps that they won't matter. Either you need a Marshall-plan from rich countries or some large-scale private initiatives, but EU funds will never be enough,he said.

Summit will not be end of eurozone's troubles, says Barroso 19.10.11 @ 18:21 By Honor Mahony

In a reminder to jittery markets about how difficult decisions for the eurozone do not just need to be taken but also implemented, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has said Sunday's (23 October) key summit will not necessarily draw the much-wanted line under the eurozone's sovereign debt crisis.Even if we do arrive at a political decision on everything that's on the table, which I hope we will, that doesn't necessarily mean that there will not then have to be an implementing phase, Barroso told reporters on Wednesday.You cannot hope that this will be the end of all our troubles, but I very much hope that important, long-term decisions which are important for the future of the European Union and the euro will come about, he said.The approaching summit, much like previous eurozone gatherings, has represented something of a boon for students of the art of political communication.With mounting global pressure to fix the problem, analysts were quick to assume that eurozone leaders would not dare to gather for yet another meeting only to emerge with stop-gap agreements.However Germany, as the continent's paymaster, was once again quick to lower expectations. German chancellor Angela Merkel said that those raising hopes about the big bang nature of the summit have either lost patience or don't understand the extent of the challenges.Eurozone leaders on Sunday have to agree on the losses that the private sector should be obliged to take on Greek debt - a major point of division between Paris and Berlin - decide on the extent to which European banks need to be recapitalised and take steps to prevent the crisis spreading to major eurozone economies such as Italy.But both France and the commission reacted to Berlin's reticence by upping the pressure once more. Allowing the destruction of the euro is to take the risk of the destruction of Europe, said French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday while a commission spokesperson called for an end to a piecemeal approach.

President Barroso's statement represents an acknowledgment of Berlin's pragmatism and an attempt to look beyond Sunday when whatever is agreed needs to be put in place.The last eurozone leader agreement from July only made it through the final national ratification process last week, and caused the Slovak government to fall on the way.The expectations game will continue all the way up to the summit but an assessment on the sustainability of Greece's debt by representatives from the EU, European Central Bank and IMF will largely influence the proceedings.Sunday's meeting will be preceeded by a flurry of other meetings. Eurozone finance ministers will meet in Brussels on Friday evening, followed by a meeting of all 27 ministers on Saturday morning. Centre-right leaders will meet on Saturday afternoon.On the day itself, all 27 EU leaders will meet at 10.30am for their regular autumn summit. They are due to wrap up at 3pm, although the contentious issue of bank recapitalisation could see the timetable stretched.Eurozone leaders are due to start their summit at 4pm. Diplomats are already wondering if they will still be negotiating the details when Asian markets open on Monday morning.

Ratings agencies have downgraded Spanish debt and a raft of Italian banks, while Greece on Wednesday (19 October) expects a massive strike ahead of an EU summit on new anti-crisis measures.Moody's on Tuesday pulled Spanish debt down two notches from A1 to Aa2, putting the eurozone country in a similar bracket to Italy and non-euro states such as Botswana, Japan and Poland.It cited debt-laden banks and low growth prospects in its statement, noting: Since placing the ratings under review in late July 2011, no credible resolution of the current sovereign debt crisis has emerged and it will in any event take time for confidence in the area's political cohesion and growth prospects to be fully restored.The same day Standard & Poor's cut grades for three major Italian banks - Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Banco Popolare and UBI Banca - as well as 21 local-level lenders. Funding costs for Italian banks ... will remain noticeably higher than those in other eurozone countries unless the Italian government implements workable growth enhancing measures and achieves a faster reduction in the public sector debt burden,it said.The rating agencies' pressure on EU leaders to come out with a big bang solution at their meeting on Sunday follows an ultimatum from the G20 club of rich countries that Europe must take decisive action in order to fend off a global recession.

Two EU commissioners in separate statements on Tuesday added to the doomsday atmosphere.EU economic affairs commissioner Olli Rehn in a speech in Lisbon said Portugal is unlikely to meet its EU and IMF bail-out targets. There are risks to attaining the 2011 deficit target as specified in the programme,he said. EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht said in Berlin the EU is at two minutes to midnight and that a failed summit would cause truly incalculable economic and political costs.
Pressure is also building from the ground up for solutions which do not involve slashing public sector wages, higher taxes and fewer services.The main private and public sector trade unions in Greece on Wednesday and Thursday plan to shut down air, road and train transport as well as various government departments, large and small businesses and most shops. The latest strike comes ahead of a vote in parliament on a new round of austerity measures designed to meet bail-out demands.

The €2 trillion question

In an article which saw US markets rally, UK daily The Guardian on Tuesday reported that France and Germany have already reached agreement to boost from €440 billion to €2 trillion the effective firepower of the EFSF, the EU's Luxembourg-based rescue fund. It added that leaders will inject an extra €100 billion to €200 billion into vulnerable banks.In bad news for markets, it also said private bondholders will be asked to write off between 30 percent to 50 percent of Greek debt, instead of the 21 percent agreed in July.The Financial Times Deutschland said the EFSF will go up to €1 trillion.An EU official speaking to the Dow Jones financial newswire poured cold water on the reports, however. We may have a decision on the size by the summit or just a statement that firepower must be increased. But there is no talk about an amount around €2 trillion, the anonymous source said.For its part, Germany, which is to a large extent bankrolling the rescue measures and which expects lower than forecast growth at home next year, is trying to dampen expectations of an EU summit panacea.Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday built on earlier comments by her finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble that the G20 ultimatum is unrealistic. The EU summit is an important step but further steps will follow ... These sovereign debts have been built up over decades and therefore one cannot resolve them with one summit but it will take difficult, long-term work, she told a press conference in Berlin.If the Sunday meeting manages to calm markets, it carries a different risk of deepening divisions between euro-using and non-euro EU countries.Polish EU affairs minister Mikolaj Dowgielewicz on Tuesday warned that plans to split the event in two - an EU27 session and a eurozone17 session - are unwelcome in Warsaw. Decisions on the eurozone should be taken in the presence of those who will in future find themselves in the eurozone, or - an even better solution - amidst all EU member states,he told Polish press agency Pap.

Op-Ed: What is Going on at the Temple Mount?

Isn't it about time the Temple Mount should be open for Jewish worshipers? I was detained by police for bowing down in prayer there. In what other democracy would a citizen be interrogated for praying? David Haivri-The Israeli government can and should allow Jews freedom of prayer on the Temple Mount.Yesterday I was detained by the Israeli police, and charged with disorderly conduct that might cause riots.What I had actually been suspected of was bowing down in prayer on the Temple Mount.The authorities are concerned that Jews praying on the Temple Mount could kick off local Muslims’ anger and that they might use this as an excuse for staging protests and riots. In their opinion, these fears are reason enough to strip law-abiding citizens of the very basic right of freedom of religion and prayer.It is simply unacceptable that such a policy exists at all and it’s even worse that it’s based on fear of a threat that might rise by a party who might choose violence as a tool to establish facts on the ground. This is a clear case of government policy being influenced by concern over threats.The State has a responsibility to protect its citizens’ rights and not to cave in to bullies. Ten of the eleven gates of the Temple Mount are closed to Jews and open to Muslims at all times. Jews are permitted to enter the site only via the Mugrabi Gate on the south side of the Western Wall - and only during four hours daily on weekdays.

Jews who wish to enter the Temple Mount must go through a security check and clearance that is not mandatory for other visitors. While non-Jews walk in freely with little or no security check, Jewish visitors are treated to pat-downs by police, who check their pockets and bags for prayer books and then warn them not to pray on the Mount. Once Jews get through all of this, they are followed by teams of police and Muslim Wakf guards who watch to see if they might be breaking the rules and praying without permission.These special regulations for Jews are degrading and should be stopped.A Jew who is suspected of breaking the rules by daring to whisper a prayer is likely to be arrested and brought in for questioning by the Israeli police.In what other country would you expect a citizen to be interrogated for praying? Can you imagine the police officer saying, You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can be used against you in a court of law... and then you are suspected of praying . . . ? This is no joke - I have personally have had the honor of going through this ordeal.Israel should apply its efforts to maintaining law and order by arresting and questioning those who present a threat of disorderly conduct or rioting - and not those law-abiding people who simply wish to pray.If the police would shift their focus from restricting Jewish visits and prayer on the Temple Mount towards monitoring those who pose a threat to that freedom, they would be able, in a few actions, to stabilize a workable reality on the Temple Mount in which Jews could have free access to pray on the holy mountain.

Instead of intimidating worshipers by patting them down for prayer books and warning them not to pray, they should be patting down those suspicious figures that might be inciting violence against the worshipers. Incitement coming out of the Mosque should be monitored if it becomes a platform for harassment of Jewish visitors to the site.
Reassignment of resources used to police the Temple Mount could easily bring changes that would allow Jews freedom of prayer at the holy site, as would be expected of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic country.It is time to bring about that change, and to stop the discrimination against Jews in our homeland and holy city, at our holiest site. Ed. Note: There are prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Zalman Baruch Melamed, head of Beit El yeshiva and the former Chief Rabbi, the late Rav Avraham Elkana Shapira of Merkaz Harav yeshiva, as well as many hareidi-religious rabbis, who oppose Jews ascending the Temple Mount for halakhic reasons, saying that the location of areas that are forbidden to Jews except for priests and the High Priest, are not unequivocally known. That has no bearing on the treatment of Jews whose rabbinic authorities feel differently and who do ascend the mount.

Among them is Amna Muna, the female terrorist who in January of 2001 lured 16-year-old Ophir Rachum to Ramallah, where he was shot to death by terrorists.Rachum met Muna, then 24 years old, on the internet. After gaining his confidence, Muna persuaded Rachum to come to Jerusalem to meet her.When Rachum arrived at the Jerusalem Central Bus Station, Muna drove him to the outskirts of Ramallah, where they were greeted by her two partners, both terrorists belonging to the Fatah organization. The two tried to get Rachum out of the car and when he refused, one of them shot him to death.After the murder, Palestinian Authority Arabs took Rachum’s body to Ramallah, where they buried it.15 other terrorists who were released arrived in Qatar overnight Tuesday. World Population Close to Reaching 7 Billion

The United Nations Population Fund announced this week that the world's count of human inhabitants on the planet will surpass 7 billion this month, but there are few celebrations, even though the U.N. entitles its report, People and Possibilities. This is because scientists in the environmental and social realms long have warned of overpopulation challenges that include hunger, pollution, global warming and in the extreme the conflicts of warfare and genocide.America's Public Broadcasting Service has explored the issue in a series of reports under the moniker of Our Changing Planet. The reports describe how the world's population has skyrocketed from an estimated 300 million during the time of Christ to 1 billion at the time of the American Revolution to today's 7 billion figure. Furthermore, experts predict that unless current trends are impacted, another 1 billion people will be added every dozen years or so.One main cause is improved modern medicine such as the advent of antibiotics, which has extended the average lifespan to 68 years, up from 48 in 1960. Another cause is tied to cultures in which birth control and contraception are either ignored, frowned upon, or considered as outright evil.

Our Changing Planet reports signs of progress. A typical woman in Kenya gives birth to 4.4 children during her lifetime, compared to 8.1 as recently as near the turn of the millennium. In Iran, the average is 2.8, down from 6.8. In Bangladesh, it's 3.1, compared to the previous 6.4. Communal education is credited, along with increased availability of safe, humane contraceptives and steps away from traditions of child marriages.The United Nations is scheduled to release a report on further action steps on Oct. 26. Meanwhile, a group known as Population Connection is protesting an early October vote by the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee to defund the U.N. Population Fund. NASA postpones climate satellite launch to Oct 28

NASA on Wednesday set October 28 for its planned launch of a satellite to help weather forecasters predict extreme storms and offer scientists a better view of climate change.The 1.5 billion dollar National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project (NPP) is the first to measure both short and long term changes in weather and climate, the US space agency said.The launch, initially set for October 27, has been retargeted for Oct 28, NASA said in a message on the micro-blogging site Twitter.The satellite will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California between 5:48 am Eastern time (0948 GMT) and 5:57 am (0957 GMT).The SUV-sized satellite will carry five instruments to study temperature and water in the atmosphere, how clouds and aerosols affect temperature, and how plants on land and in the ocean respond to environmental changes.This is really the first mission that is designed to provide observations for both weather forecasters and climate researchers,Jim Gleason, NPP project scientist, told reporters earlier this month.NPP's observations will help scientists better predict the future environment and these prediction are incredibly valuable for economic, security and humanitarian reasons.The satellite is one of 14 Earth observation missions currently being managed by NASA. With the help of a herpes-infected monkey.By Wednesday afternoon Ohio authorities hunted down and killed almost all of the 56 animals who were turned loose Tuesday evening. The Columbus Dispatch has a tragic photo of the slain animals here.But two of the beasts eluded capture: a wolf and a monkey who may be infected with Herpes B, according to CBS. Another monkey from the Muskingum County Animal Farm was eaten by an escaped lion who has since been killed, ABC reported.The escaped monkey has inspired a fake Twitter account.
People who live in the mostly rural area stayed indoors Wednesday as deputies used rifles to hunt down lions, tigers, bears, leopards, cheetahs and other exotic animals apparently let loose by their owner, Terry Thompson. Police say that Thompson, who had served time on weapons charges, committed suicide.Authorities said they had no choice but to shoot the animals, since animals hit with tranquilizer darts could run away and hide. Ohio Gov. John Kasich let a ban on owning exotic pets expire last April, to the dismay of the Humane Society.
