Under pressure to restore confidence in the eurozone, the leaders of France and Germany on Tuesday (16 August) outlined plans for further economic integration but shied away from financial measures seen by markets as necessary to stem the euro debt crisis.Following the two-hour talks in Paris, President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel said they would work towards a common corporation tax by 2013 and to co-ordinate their annual national budgets.More generally, they suggested eurozone leaders should meet twice a year and that all single currency countries should enact constitutional changes requiring balanced budgets.Germany and France feel absolutely determined to strengthen the euro as our common currency and further develop it,said Merkel after the discussions.The status quo is impossible, said Sarkozy, who noted that both Paris and Berlin want a true European economic government.The two leaders pledged to revive the idea of a financial transaction tax - a proposal that has been regularly mentioned in Brussels in recent months but has failed to get traction among member states.We are aware that this is a step-by-step process that cannot be agreed at once, but we are convinced it is right for Europe, Merkel said.

The proposals were welcomed by EU commission president Jose Manuel Barroso as representing an important political contribution by the leaders of the two largest euro area economies to this debate and the on-going work.But others dismissed it as too little. The Franco-German meeting has not produced anything particularly new or useful, said Sony Kapoor, managing director of Re-Define, an economic policy thinktank.The highly-anticipated meeting followed fresh turbulence in the markets last week, with Sarkozy coming under intense pressure amid speculation that France may be next in line to lose its AAA credit ranking.The two measures that many analysts believe will help ease the eurozone's debt crisis – the issuance of eurobonds and increasing the size of the eurozone’s €440 billion rescue fund – were not on the table, however.Eurobonds can be imagined one day, but at the end of the European integration process, not at the beginning, said Sarkozy. He added that the fund's size is sufficient.It is often said that eurobonds are a last resort for the eurozone but I don't think the eurozone is dependent on last resorts, said Merkel. I don’t think eurobonds help us.The leaders' reluctance to discuss eurobonds reflects deep hostility in Germany and other northern countries, such as the Netherlands and Finland, towards what they see as helping financially undisciplined countries without firm guarantees in return.Merkel and Sarkozy's plans did not have an immediately positive effect on markets. Reuters reported that US stocks dropped more than one percent as details of the proposals emerged.The meeting also took place amid more bad news about the eurozone, with second quarter results for Germany, released Tuesday, showing that GDP increased by only 0.1 percent.

Van Rompuy to be eurozone president

Details of the meeting are to be sent to European Council president Herman Van Rompuy today (17 September).The former Belgian prime minister, who to date has had no formal role in the eurozone, is set to benefit politically from the crisis.He is expected to head up the twice yearly meetings of eurozone leaders and take a more co-ordinating role.This could also help reduce the number of disparate voices speaking out on eurozone issues. The depth of the crisis in 17-nation single currency has meant that every off-the-cuff remark by a leader has the potential to move markets.

The EU, Russia, the US and the UN have spoken out against Israel's decision to create more houses for Jews on Palestinian land ahead of a UN vote on Palestine's future.The so-called Quartet said in its statement on Tuesday (16 August) it is greatly concerned by Israel's recent announcements to advance planning for new housing units in Ariel and East Jerusalem.It added Jerusalem in particular is one of the core issues that must be resolved through negotiations and noted the housing decisions come at a critical juncture in the peace process.The statement follows Israel's approval of 277 new homes in the West Bank settlement of Ariel and 1,600 housing units in occupied East Jerusalem.Ariel is part of a pattern of construction cutting the West Bank into four cantons and making the creation of a future Palestinian state more difficult.The Quartet statement marks an escalation in international pressure on Israel. EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton three days ago voiced deep regret about the Jerusalem move but was ignored.

The European Central Bank last week spent a record €22bn buying euro-zone government bonds in a bid to prevent the eurozone debt crisis spreading, a move that is likely to fuel debate on the creation of eurobonds.Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel are meeting in Paris today (consilium.eu)The buying spree represented the most the central bank has spent since it first began bond-buying in May last year in response to the Greek debt crisis.It also shows the scale of the challenge faced by the bank in keeping down the borrowing costs of Italy and Spain, the eurozone’s third and fourth largest economies.The bond buyback programme - supposed to be a temporary measure while politicians attempt to solve the eurozone’s problems – is controversial among ECB policy-makers.It is most strongly opposed by Jens Weidmann and Juergen Stark, German members of the bank’s governing council, who feel the bank is moving into political territory.However, the bank has felt itself compelled to move as various agreements by EU politicians over recent months have failed to draw a line under the crisis.A July deal to allow the eurozone rescue fund to buy bonds – which the ECB keenly wants to come into force – has first to be ratified by member states.The extent of last week’s purchase, revealed by the bank yesterday, came on the eve of a meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris today (16 August).Last week Sarkozy said the meeting would result in extremely ambitious euro zone governance proposals.

Eurobonds

The most talked-about issue – though informally – is the mutualisation of eurozone debt through the creation of eurobonds.Germany has officially said this is a no-go area and will not be discussed during today’s meeting.The German government has said on numerous occasions that it does not believe Eurobonds make sense and that's why they will not play any role at tomorrow's meeting, spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Monday.However, behind the scenes the issue is being increasingly discussed.An article on Sunday in German daily Die Welt indicated that Berlin was coming around to the idea of eurobonds and cited an anonymous government source as saying that maintaining the eurozone with all its members is an absolute priority for Germany.The idea also has some support from industry.The head of the German export Group BGA said Eurobonds are needed to avoid a global depression.The alternative is the markets attack Italy, then France, we lose our AAA rating and then it's our turn. This is a downward spiral that would lead to a worldwide depression, Anton Boerner told Reuters news agency.What have we achieved then? Boerner said.We'll end up paying three times over. This week's Moscow Airshow may prove to be a limited repetition of this pattern. Russia will display a new stealth fighter jet -- the Sukhoi T-50. The plane will replace the increasingly obsolete Sukhoi 27 and Sukhoi 29 planes.Starting with 2016 the Russian Air Force hopes to receive 20 planes each year. While the planes will cost less than the comparable American stealth plane, the Americans are developing a cheaper version. The question will be how many of the new planes with a price tag of hundred $140 million will Russia prove able to afford.Russia has one definite customer for the plane – India. India contributed 35% of the funding for the 6 billion-dollar development costs. To bring down the price Russia will need additional customers. The Americans are assisted by the fact that they will probably find customers in NATO as well as countries such as Israel that has already placed an order for the American planes.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will be on hand to see the flight of the new plane as it symbolizes Russia's return to the cutting-edge of military technology. Putin will very much like to drive home the point that during his years as president and prime minister, Russia made strides back to a position of military competitiveness. A few months back China also unveiled a prototype of a stealth fighter plane.

Despite causing controversy last month with a video that portrayed white middle class Americans as the most likely terrorists, the Department of Homeland Security has released yet another PSA that depicts an attempt to bomb a subway station not by Al-Qaeda Muslims, but well-dressed white people.A new Public Service Announcement entitled The Drop Off – If You See Something, Say Something’ was unveiled by none other than Big Sis herself, Janet Napolitano, on the Homeland Security website today.

The PSA, which will be played on television and radio stations, shows a well dressed attractive white woman exiting a taxi before walking into a subway station. The taxi driver – a white man – then makes a phone call and sets a timer on a device in the trunk of the car. The woman then leaves her bag in the station.If you see something, say something – report suspicious activity to local authorities, states the voiceover as the clip ends with other commuters reporting the incident to a black security guard and a black police officer.In her accompanying statement to the video, DHS chief Napolitano also hints that gun stores could be a prime breeding ground for terrorists, making reference to a recent case where, the owner of a gun store near Ft. Hood called authorities when an individual in his store was behaving in a suspicious manner.As we highlighted last month, a longer PSA recently produced by the DHS overwhelmingly went to significant lengths to portray white Americans as the most likely terrorists, despite the fact that the 126 people who were indicted on terrorist-related charges in the United States over the last two years were all Muslim.Bizarrely, the majority of the people shown reporting suspicious activity to authorities were portrayed as non-whites.The story, first featured on Infowars.com, went viral and prompted a furious response from many, appearing on the Drudge Report, Fox News, Breitbart.tv, the Daily Mail as well as featuring highly amongst the most read articles on the entire Internet during that 24 hour period. The Fox Nation version of the story received well over 2000 comments.Despite the DHS’ claims to the contrary, many saw the ad as being deliberately racially motivated. Some concluded that this was merely a nod to political correctness while others viewed it as part of a pattern of demonizing white middle class Americans – many of whom are furious with the federal government for all manner of different reasons - as the DHS increasingly targets its anti-terror apparatus against politically motivated citizens.

Of the numerous different scenarios shown in the video, no less than 12 of them depict white people as terrorists whereas only three are non-whites. In addition, of the people depicted as patriotic Americans for reporting the terrorists, only one of them is white, while seven are non-white.As Pajamas Media highlighted,The DHS video goes out of its way to avoid showing any terrorist who fits the profile of the actual terrorists who have been waging war on us for more than a decade: Young men primarily from the Middle East. Instead, it tends to show them as middle aged white men. And it doesn’t really show them doing much of what actual terrorists do. As reported by 60 Minutes, the Sovereign Citizens movement – a loosely knit group that doesn’t pay taxes, carry driver’s licenses or hold Social Security cards – has shown a violent and sometimes murderous dislike of law enforcement. Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh had only two known co-conspirators.

The FBI and DHS have an acronym for people and groups who dislike and distrust the government – HVEs, or homegrown violent extremists.In 2010, the FBI posted a web page on Domestic Terrorism listing the sovereign citizen movement. The movement, however, was portrayed as criminal scam artists, not violent terrorists. Sovereign citizens are often confused with extremists from the militia movement. But while sovereign citizens sometimes use or buy illegal weapons, guns are secondary to their anti-government, anti-tax beliefs,writes the FBI.In April, the Star-Tribune reported that the FBI is keeping tabs on the sovereign citizen movement in Wyoming. The newspaper said that most sovereigns maintain they only want a peaceful transition to a restored republic, but the bureau has kept an eye on the movement because some sovereigns have taken the logical step from belief in the illegitimacy of the current system to acting violently against it,according to FBI Special Agent Kathy Wright.The FBI announced last year that the sovereign citizen movement ranks among the nation’s top domestic terrorist threats, along with animal rights/eco-terrorism, anarchists, and lone offenders with extremist agendas, according to the Star-Tribune.

The FBI encourages Americans to inform on their fellow citizens if they express anti-government political views the agency insists invariably turns violent.First, ‘be crime smart’: don’t fall for the bogus claims and scams of sovereign citizens. And second, if you have information on any suspicious activities or crimes, please contact us, the FBI told the Homeland Security Newswire last year.Following the attacks in Norway, the DHS told AOL-Huffington Post that white supremacists and members of a sovereign citizen movement pose a domestic terror threat.A Norway incident could definitely happen here; the same things that played into the Norway suspect’s mindset are here in this country, former DHS domestic terror analyst Daryl Johnson, who founded a consulting firm that tracks extremist activity, told the liberal news website. If anything, extremists are much more capable of committing violent acts here due to their access to weapons and ammunition, which they don’t have in Europe.The corporate media wasted little time hyping the imagined threat from far right groups in America following the Norwegian rampage.The greatest threat of large-scale attacks come from individuals and small groups of extremists who subscribe to radical Islamic or far right-wing ideologies, CNN reported on July 25.

In order to make the point that domestic groups opposed to the federal government are a looming threat, CNN turned to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that has made a cottage industry out of scare mongering terrorism threats from groups and individuals they place on the right side of the political spectrum.Such groups are among the fastest-growing extremist organizations in the country, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported in February. Right wing anti-government groups grew by 60% in 2010 over the previous year, the center reported, attributing much of the growth to militia groups, CNN reported, parroting skewed statistics released by the SPLC.

During an NPR interview of New York Times veteran reporter Thom Shanker, who co-authored Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America’s Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda, we learn that the Pentagon routinely pretends to be al-Qaeda:What the American military intelligence can do is forge the watermarks or certification of official al-Qaida postings, says Shanker.American cyber technology is so advanced that they can have a near perfect re-creation of an al-Qaida message — and what they’re doing from time to time is going on jihadi websites and posting conflicting and contradictory orders, statements that raise doubt about who the jihadis should follow and who is really in charge … and the goal is to really disrupt the entire network by sowing dissent and confusion. We’ve been told they’ve had some great success at that.In other words, we have no way of discerning between the real al-Qaeda and the facsimile created by the Pentagon and the CIA.Claims that al-Qaeda videos are fake and the discrepancy of fat and Grecian formula Osama bin Ladens are usually ignored by the corporate media or dismissed as conspiracy theories. Shanker’s report from the Pentagon lends credence to skeptics who insist al-Qaeda is not what the government says it is.This denial persisted even after the CIA admitted faking al-Qaeda videos and having its employees dress up and act like the dead Osama bin Laden.Not that it matters. For instance, the New Osama, Anwar al-Awlaki, dined at the Pentagon – a fact reported by Fox News – but this did not jive with the official Pentagon generated narrative, so it was ignored.

This new information will either be ignored or the professional script-readers who pretend to be journalists will fail to connect the dots, as usual.The essence of Doublethink, after all, is the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct. Normally, such information creates cognitive dissonance – the uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously – but in the bizarro world that is the forever war of manufactured terror, this no longer applies.The Pentagon can now brazenly admit it creates terrorism and we are expected to assimilate this without question or further intellectual processing. If we point out the obvious, we are either ignored, dismissed as insane – a favorite tactic of neocons such as Newt Gingrich – or accused of aiding and abetting the enemies of freedom.
