BofA to exit Canada, Europe credit card business

NEW YORK/CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp plans to sell its credit card business in Canada to TD Bank Group and will exit the rest of its international card business, the bank said on Monday.TD Bank's agreement with Bank of America, the largest U.S. bank by assets, covers an $8.6 billion card portfolio, according to a Bank of America statement. It did not disclose the value of the transaction.TD Group said it will pick up 1.8 million active card accounts from the deal and that it would pay a modest premium for the card receivables.Bank of America also said it would exit its United Kingdom and Ireland card businesses. It has not made a decision on the future of those businesses, which it may wind down or sell, a spokesman said.The move effectively ends Bank of America's consumer banking operations overseas, and comes as it seeks ways to bulk up its capital cushion.

The bank is fighting lawsuits and credit problems related to its ill-fated acquisition of home mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp three years ago as the U.S. housing bubble burst.The bank has lost more than $22 billion in its consumer mortgage division in the last four quarters. It agreed in June to pay $8.5 billion to mortgage securities investors and is fighting numerous lawsuits challenging the settlement and other mortgage issues.The sale was not a reaction to analyst estimates over the last week that the bank would need to raise capital to absorb those losses, said Bank of America spokesman Jerry Dubrowski. The reports sent its shares down by 20 percent last Monday.Bank of America said the deal would have a positive effect on its capital levels. It is expected to close in the fourth quarter.Since Brian Moynihan replaced Kenneth Lewis as chief executive in January 2010, Bank of America has been shedding what it considers noncore assets.Last week, Moynihan said in a conference call with investors that the bank has sold 23 businesses and assets over the last six quarters.The sales ranged from a large portion of the bank's stake in BlackRock Inc , the world's largest asset manager, to Balboa Insurance, which provides foreclosure insurance.The bank has earned $30 billion in proceeds through those asset sales, Dubrowski said.Bank of America said it agreed on August 3 to sell its card business in Spain to Apollo Capital Management. In April, it sold a small business lending portfolio in the UK to Barclays .The bank's shares were up 3 percent at $7.40 in early trading on Monday.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Google Inc. is buying cell phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion in cash. It's by far Google's biggest acquisition and a sign the online search leader is serious about expanding beyond its core Internet business and setting the agenda in the fast-growing mobile market.

Google will pay $40.00 per share, a 63 percent premium to Motorola's closing price on Friday.Google's Android operating system runs smartphones that compete with iPhones, BlackBerrys and Windows-based mobile devices. Motorola Mobility was separated from the rest of Motorola in January. The company has remade itself as a maker of smartphones based on Android, but has struggled against Apple Inc. and Asian smartphone makers.Motorola Mobility's total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies, said Google CEO Larry Page in a statement. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers.The acquisition has the approval of both companies' boards and is expected to close by the end of this year or early 2012. That may be overly ambitious, however, as the deal is likely to face regulatory scrutiny. It dwarfs Google's previous biggest deal, the 2008 purchase of DoubleClick for $3.2 billion, which took a year to get approval.What Google likely wants from the acquisition is Motorola's trove of more than 17,000 patents on phone technology. Google recently lost out to a consortium that included Microsoft Corp., Apple and Research In Motion Ltd. in bidding for thousands of patents from Novell Inc., a maker of computer-networking software, and Nortel Networks, a Canadian telecom gear maker that is bankrupt and is selling itself off in pieces.Motorola has nearly three times more patents than Nortel.In premarket trading, shares of Motorola Mobility soared 60 percent, or $14.72, to $39.19. But now that U.S. government debt has been downgraded, the U.S. dollar is showing significant weakness and the U.S. economy continues to crumble, the rest of the world is questioning whether the U.S. dollar should be allowed to continue to have such a privileged position in the global marketplace. Politicians all over the world are now openly calling for a new global currency to replace the U.S. dollar in international trade. In fact, we are already seeing a shift away from the dollar in many areas of the globe. A decade ago, the U.S. dollar made up approximately 70% of all foreign exchange reserves around the world. Today, that figure is down to about 60%, and it continues to fall. As the debt problems of the U.S. government get even deeper, and as the U.S. dollar loses even more strength, the calls for a truly global currency are going to grow even louder.Right now, the global financial system is still based on the U.S. dollar to a very large degree. But dissatisfaction with the status quo is growing around the world. Many are blaming the United States for the massive financial problems that we have had in recent years.Many global politicians these days seem quite eager to jump on any chance to criticize the U.S. financial system. In particular, the recent downgrade of long-term U.S. government debt by S&P has provided plenty of ammunition for international proponents of a new global currency.The largest bank in Saudi Arabia, National Commercial Bank, recently had the following to say about the U.S. dollar….The size of the US economy and its treasury market and the dollar’s status as a reserve currency make it impossible to find a historical parallel for the current situation. The following is one example….The only way the Americans have come up with to improve economic growth has been to take on new loans to repay the old ones.In fact, Xinhua has even gone so far to suggest that U.S. monetary policy should be under international supervision and that a new global reserve currency should be created….

International supervision over the issue of U.S. dollars should be introduced and a new, stable and secured global reserve currency may also be an option to avert a catastrophe caused by any single country.The Russian government has also been a vocal proponent of a shift away from the U.S. dollar. At a G8 summit back in 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev openly spoke of the need for a new global currency and he evenshowed reporters a coin that represented what a “united future world currency could potentially look like.But it is not just individual nations that have been calling for a change. Over the last couple of years, the United Nations has repeatedly called for the U.S. dollar to be replaced as the global reserve currency.

For instance, a UN report entitled The U.N. World Economic and Social Survey 2010″ openly talked about how the transition from the U.S. dollar to a new global currency could be accomplished. The report made very few headlines around the world, but Americans need to understand that the UN itself is openly plotting to dethrone the U.S. dollar. The following is a brief excerpt from the report….A new global reserve system could be created, one that no longer relies on the United States dollar as the single major reserve currency.The IMF has also been instrumental in promoting the idea of a new global currency. In a recent report entitled Enhancing International Monetary Stability—A Role for the SDR, the IMF discussed the problems with having the U.S. dollar as the reserve currency of the world and it postulated that a larger role for SDRs (Special Drawing Rights) could potentially be an important step toward a true global currency.In fact, the report described SDRs as an embryo from which a new global currency could ultimately develop.So what would a global currency look like? While he was still head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn openly called for the introduction of a global currency backed by a global central bank which would act as the lender of last resort in the event of a severe economic crisis….Finally, in principle, a new global currency issued by a global central bank, with robust governance and institutional features, could provide a nominal anchor and risk-free asset for the system independent of national currencies. This global central bank could also serve as a lender of last resort.
But is that what we really need? A global currency issued by a global central bank?
Such a system would not be accountable to American voters whatsoever.Not that the Federal Reserve is accountable to us right now, but at least there is some hope of abolishing the Fed under the U.S. Constitution.Under a global central banking system, the American people would have essentially no power over the monetary system and the international bankers would have almost all the power.Of course that is what the international bankers have always wanted – complete control over the financial system of the entire world.Sadly, it seems as though whenever financial problems arise these days, the solutions we are given always involves more centralization of financial power.

There seems to be a growing consensus among the ultra-wealthy and the global elite that a one world financial system is what we need. But getting there will not be easy. The U.S. dollar is not dead yet, and much of the rest of the world has grown accustomed to using it.However, if the U.S. dollar were to collapse, that could create a crisis which would give the global elite the excuse they need to push us in the direction of a truly global currency.Let’s hope that nothing like this happens any time soon.Could you imagine living in a world in which you were unable to buy or sell unless you participated in the global currency system? That is a frightening thing to think about.Our world is changing, and not for the better.A global currency would be a really, really bad idea. The radioactivity originated from Fukushima, but various prefectures are burning radioactive materials in their terroritories.Gundersen says that this radioactivity ends up not only in neighboring prefectures, but in Hawaii, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington and California.He notes that radioactive rain-outs were documented recently in British Columbia and Oklahoma with geiger counters.Gundersen is working with scientists who will publish a paper in the near future definitively debunking Canadian and American health officials’ claims that only harmless levels of radiation are being released.Gundersen has a high-level contact in the State Department who says that the U.S. government has decided – within various agencies, including the State Department, FDA, and other agencies – to downplay the dangers from Fukushima. Because of this policy decision, the government is not really testing for radiation.Gundersen says that well see another year of radioactive rain-outs, as the Japanese continue to burn radioactive materials.

However, the final tally of the Iowa straw poll saw establishment footstool Michele Bachmann eke out Ron Paul by a mere 152 votes. Despite the closeness of the race and the immense political ramifications of a candidate labeled by the corporate media as part of fringe politics finishing neck-to-neck with the insincere Bachmann, Reuters decided to write about Rick Perry’s insignificant, meaningless, though establishment approved, entry into the GOP 2012 race instead. The leaders of France and Germany are meeting on Tuesday in a further attempt to stem the eurozone debt crisis following last week’s strong market turbulence, but Berlin has ruled out any mutualisation of euro countries’ debt.The German parliament is to discuss the latest eurozone plans in September (Jorge Franganillo)German chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Paris to meet president Nicolas Sarkozy, who last week became the latest eurozone leader to feel the pressure amid speculation that France would be next to lose its top level credit rating.The markets will be closely watching the crisis meeting having picked holes in each of the eurozone’s hastily agreed solutions to date.But despite the intense scrutiny and pressure, it is unclear what major initiatives the two leaders can agree, with Merkel facing a parliament already rebellious about the second bailout for Greece agreed at a eurozone summit in late July.Ahead of the meeting, German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble rejected the creation of Eurobonds, which would pool the debt of eurozone countries.

I rule out eurobonds for as long as member states conduct their own financial policies and we need different rates of interest in order that there are possible incentives and sanctions to enforce fiscal solidity, he told Der Spiegel.Berlin’s refusal to countenance this path comes as Giulio Tremonti, finance minister of Italy – another country under intense market pressure – described jointly issued bonds as a master solution for the eurozone debt crisis.Proponents of eurobonds say they would lower the borrowing costs for struggling eurozone countries but others say they would also raise the cost for countries such as Germany, which has to date benefitted from being viewed as a safe bet by markets.Both Sarkozy and Merkel are going into Tuesday's meeting with their own set of acute domestic problems.The French president is facing elections next year and is desperate to be seen to be mastering the economic situation, with figures released last Friday showing zero economic growth in the second quarter.The German chancellor meanwhile is conscious of the popular and political antipathy towards the steps already agreed by EU leaders in July to help troubled eurozone countries.The measures to make the €440 billion eurozone rescue fund more flexible have to be ratified by national parliaments. Merkel has said she hopes German MPs will give the green light by the end of September. But the speaker of the German parliament, Norbert Lammert, a member of Merkel's Christian Democratic Party, indicated that this timetable may be too ambitious.The European recovery mechanism issue is so important that parliament cannot debate it with the necessary care and vote on it in the course of just a few days, Lammert told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung paper on Sunday.It will hardly be possible to deal with the matter between September 20 and 23, he said of the government’s plans.There is also opposition among the Liberals who are part of the governing coalition.We will not hand out a blank cheque to buy other country's bonds,said Rainer Bruederle, leader of the liberals in the parliament.

According to a new study by Dr. Aviad Hacohen, Dean of the Shaarei Mishpat College, despite the talk by officials in Israel’s judicial system about the importance of Jewish law and its integration into the Israeli legal system, in practice no use is made of it and those who use it are looked down upon.Justice Minister Yaakov Ne’eman has called in the past to incorporate mishpat ivri (Jewish civil law) into Israel’s law procedures. He is the present-day representative of a long tradition in the religious Zionist sphere, of those who hoped for mishpat Ivri to be the law of the Land.These included Rabbi Kook, Rabbi Maimon and the hareidi-religious Rabbi Eliezer Waldenburg (the latter, in his book Hilchot Medinah, referred to it as atchalta d'Geulah, the start of the redemption, in the arising of our own state on part of our Holy Land, with our own independent government,page 8).While some criticized the idea, including opposition leader Tzipi Livni, others supported Ne’eman, including former Justice Minister Moshe Nissim, who is an observant Jew and son of a former Sephardic Chief Rabbi.There have also been calls to make Jewish monetary law a part of Israeli law. The values and ethics in mishpat ivri are seen as placing it a notch above precedent-based law, as Jewish civil law has the stated objective of building a healthy, caring and just society.But as Hacohen told Arutz Sheva on Sunday, the trend as can be seen from his research is a move away from Jewish law rather than toward it.The phenomenon of not using halakah is not a new phenomenon, he said, pointing out that there have been a few exceptions but that in general the Supreme Court does not heed Jewish law in its rulings.The problem, however, said Dr. Hacohen, is that not only is there no use of Jewish law in court rulings, but judges actually make fun of the Jewish law.

For example, he said, according to some guidelines that were distributed to judges, there is no need for an Israeli judge to have proven knowledge of Jewish law. He added that this is as evidence of a perception that judges who chose to rely on Jewish law may be not be promoted because of this fact.Dr. Hacohen said that this attitude permeates the legal system, as judges and other individuals with senior positions in the judicial system say that young students should not waste their time studying Jewish law since it has no real chance of being used.He brought another example of a judge who noticed that his friend was engaged in Jewish law and asked him, Why did you dive into the deep waters of the Jewish law?, or in other words: why are you engaged in something which has no real legal need? Dr. Hacohen pointed out that these and other examples go against the Israeli law which requires a judge to turn to halakhic sources, especially when making decisions concerning fundamental rights, which Israeli law states must be based on Israel’s Jewish and democratic values.There are judges who do quote Jewish civil law in their rulings, but they are becoming few and far between. Terrorists who committed the most heinous crimes – and therefore received longer sentences – receive the most money, according to a report in Israeli paper Yisrael Hayom.Citing a report received by a senior government official in Jerusalem, the paper says that the terrorists' salaries are paid from the PA's public budget,which accounts for about 3.5 percent of its total budget.The PA treasury receives cash from two main sources: the US pays about 50 percent of the money, and the rest is mostly from European Union member nations.Prisoners who were jailed for periods of up to five years receive 1,400 to 2,000 NIS per month. However, terrorists serving 10 to 15 years receive 6,000 shekels, the ones serving 15 to 20 years receive 10,000 shekels, and those serving 20 to 30 years get 12,000 shekels. These are people who planned, directed and took part in the intentional sadistic slaughter of civilian men, women and children, at point blank range.Since some of the victims of PA terror are American citizens, the information means that US taxpayers pay monthly salaries to the people who murdered their fellow citizens. The latest US citizen who was a victim of PA terror is Ben Yosef Livnat, who was gunned down in Shechem.The terrorists' wives and children receive additional cash, and prisoners with Israel citizenship get a bonus.

Israel and the terror entity Hamas have resumed negotiations over the release of Gilad Schalit, according to Al Hayat, a London-based Arabic newspaper. Schalit has been held incommunicado by Hamas for over five years.The newspaper reports that Israel's emissary, David Meidan, and Hamas terror chief Ahmed Jaabari will probably arrive at the Egyptian Intelligence Headquarters Monday and conduct indirect negotiations. Hamas and Israeli delegations will sit in separate rooms, with an Egyptian team mediating.An Egyptian source told Al Hayat that Meidan and Jaabari were both in Cairo last week, and held separate meetings with senior Egyptians. These meetings led to the resumption of indirect talks.The Egyptian source said that there was no breakthrough in the talks as of yet. He said that agreement is possible if Israel is willing to pay a price for Schalit and that Hamas is interested in a deal with fair conditions. Bereaved parents in Israel have demanded that the government tell the public which terrorists it intends to release in exchange for Schalit.Schalit's parents recently met Rav Ovadiah Yosef and asked him to exert pressure on the government to effect the release of their son.

Peres is the architect of the disastrous Oslo Accords which were negotiated behind the backs of the Israeli public and the Knesset. Then-Prime Minister Rabin himself only heard of them a year after they had begun.Shimon Peres assured me that the negotiations between us could lead to results that could be adopted by the Netanyahu government, the official quoted Abbas as saying, but noted that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu thwarted those efforts.After the first four meetings, a fifth was scheduled in Amman, but Shimon Peres apologized and said, I’m sorry but the government does not accept that we negotiate and I cannot do anything,Abbas said at the Friday gathering, according to the official.Earlier this month it was reported that a meeting that was supposed to have been held between Peres and Abbas had been cancelled at Peres’ request.Israel's president's role is defined as ceremonial and apolitical, but Peres, more than any other president in Israel's history, has ignored that.
