March 26, 2011 - Hour 1
Bill Koenig returns. He is a part of the White House press corps. He and Jan discuss the political landscape for 2012, Libya, Japan, Israel, and more. All nations are in distress with perplexity as foretold in Luke 21. While this will intensify greatly in the future, we are seeing a run-up to that now. Koenig states that part of the Middle East turmoil is that our Middle East policy is seriously flawed. Even the Saudis no longer trust America. So much for bowing to the king, Barack! Where is Libya headed? How are God's purposes possibly being fulfilled in the carnage in Japan? We highly recommend Koenig's e-newsletter, Koenig's Eye-View from the White House. Learn much more at www.watch.org. Bill joins us for Understanding the Times 2011, October 7-8, a free event. He is joined by Joel Rosenberg, Dr. Mark Hitchcock, and several others. Details are on our home page, www.olivetreeviews.org and soon on our conference page.

Media Matters' war against Fox Brock (left) described Media Matters' campaign against Fox as guerrilla warfare.| Courtesy of Media Matters, AP Photo, POLITICO By BEN SMITH | 3/26/11 7:23 AM EDT Updated: 3/27/11 5:06 PM EDT

The liberal group Media Matters has quietly transformed itself in preparation for what its founder, David Brock, described in an interview as an all-out campaign of guerrilla warfare and sabotage aimed at the Fox News Channel. The group, launched as a more traditional media critic, has all but abandoned its monitoring of newspapers and other television networks and is narrowing its focus to Fox and a handful of conservative websites, which its leaders view as political organizations and the nerve center of the conservative movement. The shift reflects the centrality of the cable channel to the contemporary conservative movement, as well as the loathing it inspires among liberals — not least among the donors who fund Media Matters’ staff of about 90, who are arrayed in neat rows in a giant war room above Massachusetts Avenue. The strategy that we had had toward Fox was basically a strategy of containment, said Brock, Media Matters’ chairman and founder and a former conservative journalist, adding that the group’s main aim had been to challenge the factual claims of the channel and to attempt to prevent them from reaching the mainstream media. The new strategy, he said, is a war on Fox.In an interview and a 2010 planning memo shared with POLITICO, Brock listed the fronts on which Media Matters — which he said is operating on a $10 million-plus annual budget — is working to chip away at Fox and its parent company, News Corp. They include its bread-and-butter distribution of embarrassing clips and attempts to rebut Fox points, as well as a series of under-the-radar tactics.Media Matters, Brock said, is assembling opposition research files not only on Fox’s top executives but on a series of midlevel officials. It has hired an activist who has led a successful campaign to press advertisers to avoid Glenn Beck’s show. The group is assembling a legal team to help people who have clashed with Fox to file lawsuits for defamation, invasion of privacy or other causes. And it has hired two experienced reporters, Joe Strupp and Alexander Zaitchik, to dig into Fox’s operation to help assemble a book on the network, due out in 2012 from Vintage/Anchor. (In the interest of full disclosure, Media Matters last month also issued a report criticizing Fox and Friends co-host Steve Doocy’s criticism of this reporter’s blog.)

Brock said Media Matters also plans to run a broad campaign against Fox’s parent company, News Corp., an effort which most likely will involve opening a United Kingdom arm in London to attack the company’s interests there. The group hired an executive from MoveOn.org to work on developing campaigns among News Corp. shareholders and also is looking for ways to turn regulators in the U.S., U.K., and elsewhere against the network. The group will focus on [News Corp. CEO Rupert] Murdoch and trying to disrupt his commercial interests — whether that be here or looking at what’s going on in London right now, Brock said, referring to News Corp.’s — apparently successful — move to take a majority stake in the satellite broadcaster BSkyB.A spokeswoman for Fox News, Irena Briganti, declined to comment on Media Matters’ efforts, but the group draws regular barbs from Fox hosts Beck and Bill O’Reilly.Tonight is not an episode you casually watch and take out of context like Media Matters does,Beck remarked last month.A more extended attack came in February on the freewheeling late night show Red Eye, which conducted a mock interview with a purported Media Matters employee. It’s horrible. All we do is sit and watch Fox News and make up stuff about Fox News. It is the saddest place I have ever seen in my life. I think about it, and I want to throw up,the mock employee said. I get to work and I take off my clothes, and they strap me into a chair in front of a TV with [Fox News Channel] on. They keep my eyelids propped open like in Clockwork Orange, and I sit and type all day.If there was no Beck, George Soros would come down and demand we make it up, the interviewee continued. I would watch the Flintstones and transcribe Fred Flintstone’s words and attribute them to Beck. It was the only way to get Soros to stop hitting me.(A Soros associate said the financier, who gave Media Matters $1 million last year, did not earmark it for the Fox campaign. Soros suggested in a recent CNN interview that the Fox depictions of him as a sinister media manipulator would better be applied to Murdoch.)

In some views, the war between Media Matters and Fox is not, necessarily, bad for either side. Media Matters has transformed itself into a pillar of the progressive movement with its aggressive new brand of media campaigning. And the attacks cement Fox’s status on the right.Fox is happy about it — and it makes their position more vivid among their supporters, said Paul Levinson, a media studies professor at Fordham University. One way of keeping your core supporters happy is to be attacked by people your core supporters don’t like. But Media Matters says its digging has begun to pay off. The group has trickled out a series of emails from Washington Bureau Chief Bill Sammon, leaks from inside the network, which show him, for instance, circulating a memo on Obama’s references to socialism, liberalism, Marxism and Marxists. The leaks are part of a broader project to take advantage of internal dissent, Media Matters Executive Vice President Ari Rabin-Havt said.We made a list of every single person who works for Fox and tried to figure out who might be disgruntled and why, and we went out to try to meet them, he said. Clearly, somebody in that organization is giving us primary source documents.Media Matters, he said, is also conducting opposition research on a dozen or so mid- and senior-level execs and producers, a campaign style move that he and Brock said would simply involve recording their public appearances and digging into public records associated with them. And Brock’s 2010 planning memo offers a glimpse at Media Matters’ shift from media critic to a new species of political animal.Criticizing Fox News has nothing to do with criticizing the press, its memo says. Fox News is not a news organization. It is the de facto leader of the GOP, and it is long past time that it is treated as such by the media, elected officials and the public.Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51949_Page2.html#ixzz1Hv6rvBV9

Sarkozy warns Arab rulers about Libya precedent
ANDREW RETTMAN 25.03.2011 @ 09:52 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has warned all Arab rulers that they risk Libya-type intervention if they cross a certain line of violence against their own people. The president told press at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday (24 March) that UN Security Council resolution 1973 authorising air strikes on Libya has created a legal and political precedent on the responsibility to protect.Referring to deadly violence in Syria, he explained: Every ruler should understand, and especially every Arab ruler should understand that the reaction of the international community and of Europe will from this moment on each time be the same: we will be on the side of peaceful protesters who must not be repressed with violence.Sarkozy indicated that he is ready to tolerate a certain level of violence, but that any country which orders its army to open fire on crowds will cross a red line.In any democracy there can be demonstrations which can turn violent. But no democracy can accept that the army shoots live ammunition at protesters. This is the position of France and it does not change no matter what the country concerned. He drew a difference between Egypt, Tunisia and even Yemen, where dozens have been killed but where the armed forces have begun to defect, versus Libya, where Colonel Gaddafi's tanks and planes have waged open war on rebels. He suggested that the Ivory Coast, where President Laurent Gbago's forces recently fired a heavy artillery shell into a market square, will be next in line for a UN vote on intervention.Sarkozy noted the political sensitivity of Western military action in the Arab world.

He said that there is a new post-UNSC 1973 model of world governance. But he added that it can only work if Libya coalition powers precisely ... rigorously ... scrupulously stick to the UN mandate to protect civilians instead of playing God on who should take power after Gaddafi.Recalling the extremely moving scenes of Libyan rebels in Benghazi celebrating the arrival of French warplanes and the extreme importance of the United Arab Emirates' and Qatari involvement in the coalition, he called Libya a historic opportunity for reconciliation between the two worlds. What's at play here is Europe as a political force, with a military means serving its political ambitions, and its relations with the Arab world, the French leader went on. It's a moment of extreme importance for the political future of Europe and for the future of relations between Europe and the Arab people. The hawkish speech comes amid criticism of EU double standards on tolerating violence in strategically important countries such as Bahrain, Syria and Yemen. Palestinian diplomats have also pointed out the EU did nothing when Israeli jets bombed civilians in Gaza in 2009.Syrian president Bashar al-Assad earlier on Thursday put forward a package of political reforms designed to soothe tensions and pulled back troops from the hotspot town of Daraa near the Jordanian border. More protests are expected after prayers on Friday however, with one Arab commentator describing the al-Assad reforms as essentially transforming Ba'athist Syria into [pre-revolutionary] NDP Egypt.

Radiation levels at Japan nuclear plant reach new highs
By Chico Harlan and Brian Vastag, Monday, March 28, 1:35 AM

TOKYO — As radiation levels at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant reached a new high Sunday, workers contended with dark, steamy conditions in their efforts to repair the facility’s cooling system and stave off a full-blown nuclear meltdown. Wearing respirators, face masks and bulky suits, they fought to reconnect cables and restore power to motor pumps the size of automobiles. Leaked water sampled from one unit Sunday had 100,000 times the radioactivity of normal background levels, although the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the plant, first calculated an even higher, erroneous, figure it didn’t correct for hours.Tepco apologized Sunday night when it realized the mistake; it had initially reported radiation levels in the leaked water from the unit 2 reactor as being 10 million times the norm, which prompted an evacuation of the building. After the levels were correctly measured, airborne radioactivity in the unit 2 turbine building still remained so high — 1,000 millisieverts per hour — that a worker there would reach his yearly occupational exposure limit in 15 minutes. A dose of 4,000 to 5,000 millisieverts absorbed fairly rapidly will eventually kill about half of those exposed. The latest confusion in the operation to stave off a full-scale nuclear meltdown at the crippled facility underscores the immense challenges for the several hundred workers in a desperate battle to restart the critical cooling systems. Seventeen workers have been exposed to high levels of radiation, including three who were hospitalized last week, as technicians conducted highly nuanced electrical work in dark conditions that one nuclear industry expert termed hellish.Japanese authorities say efforts to control Fukushima’s overheated reactors will take months and during that time radiation will continue to leak into the environment, extending a nuclear emergency that already ranks as the world’s most serious in a quarter-century. Several hundred workers now shoulder the responsibility for limiting the crisis, amid potentially lethal radiation levels, and on Saturday the chief of Japan’s nuclear agency called on Tepco to improve its worker safety.

On Monday morning, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano made a plea to residents from the 12-mile radius evacuation zone surrounding the crippled nuclear plant to please stay away until safety is confirmed.Police stationed in the area have noticed more people returning to gather belongings and there is a risk of returning home now, Edamo said. Many families fled quickly after the earthquake and tsunami struck more than two weeks ago with only the clothes they were wearing.
Evidence of rising contamination in and around the plant has tempered optimism from a week ago, when engineers began work to restore power to the first of the damaged reactor buildings. Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Sunday that a new measurement of seawater taken about 1,000 feet from the facility showed an iodine level 1,850.5 times the legal limit, higher than a reading taken the previous day.The dangers in unit 2 merely add to the growing challenges. Radioactive water is pooling in four of Fukushima’s six turbine rooms, and engineers have no quick way to clean it up, although they have begun to try in unit 1.While a Tepco spokesman said Sunday that he did not know how the radioactive water was leaking from the reactor cores, Yukio Edano, chief cabinet secretary, said in a televised interview Sunday morning that the reactor itself had not been breached. He said it was clear that water that could have been inside the unit 3 reactor had leaked but the reactor had not been breached. Still, he said, Unfortunately, it seems there is no question that water, which could have been inside the reactor, is leaking.Unlike in newer reactor designs, the older boiling-water reactors at Daiichi are pierced by dozens of holes in the bottoms of their reactor vessels. Each hole allows one control rod — made of a neutron-absorbing material that quickly stops nuclear fission inside the reactor — to slide into the reactor from below, as happened when the earthquake shook the plant March 11. During normal operations, a graphite stopper covers each hole, sealing in highly radioactive primary cooling water, said Arnie Gundersen, a consultant at Fairewinds Associates with 40 years of experience overseeing boiling-water reactors. But at temperatures above 350 degrees Fahrenheit, the graphite stoppers begin to melt.Since it is likely that rubble from the broken fuel rods . . . is collecting at the bottom of the reactor, the seals are being damaged by high temperature or high radiation,Gundersen said. As the graphite seals fail, water in the reactor will leak into a network of pipes in the containment buildings surrounding each reactor — the very buildings that have been heavily damaged by explosions. Gundersen said that this piping is probably compromised, leaving highly radioactive water to seep from the reactor vessels into broken pipes — and from there into the turbine buildings and beyond.

To stabilize the facility, workers are trying to repair the elaborate cooling system, necessary to keep the reactor cores and spent fuel pools from overheating. For now, they are conducting this work in dark, steamy conditions. Nuclear safety experts say they must shift out of the most dangerous areas every 30 minutes to an hour, to prevent radiation overexposure.Meanwhile, they are racing to repair motor pumps. Their environment resembles a cavern of cables. Some of the equipment was damaged during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Other equipment has been corroded by salt water, which was poured into the facility during earlier efforts to cool the reactors. To a layman, you’d be scared to death, said Lake Barrett, a nuclear engineer who directed the cleanup of Three Mile Island. You’re working with salt water around your feet. This is not the way electricians usually work. The number of workers at the Daiichi plant fluctuates from day to day, ranging between 500 and 1,000. But Tepco employees account for only a part of the labor force. Last Tuesday, for instance, there were 700 people at the plant, a nuclear agency official said. The figure included 500 Tepco employees, 100 subcontracted workers, and 100 members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces or the Tokyo Fire Department. One subcontracted worker who laid cables for new electrical lines March 19 described chaotic conditions and lax supervision that made him nervous. Masataka Hishida said neither he nor any of the workers around him was given a dosimeter, a device used to measure one’s exposure to radiation. He was surprised that workers were not given special shoes; rather, they were told to put plastic bags over their street shoes. When he was trying on the gas mask for the first time, he said, the supervisor told him and other subcontractors, Listen carefully, I’m only going to say this one time,” while explaining how to use it.When Hishida finished his work shift, an official scanned his whole body for radiation. He came up clean, except for the very tip of his beard. He was sent into a shower where he lathered up and scrubbed his beard. He was tested again and passed.A few days later, still worried about the extent of his radiation exposure, he trimmed his beard.More from The Washington Post

Porat: Zionism Is About Redemption
by Gavriel Queenann MAR 28,11

Rabbi Chanan Porat told attendees at the Religious Zionist Education Institution's (RZEI) Leadership Conference on Sunday that Zionism is about redemption.Rabbi Chanan Porat, considered one of the foremost leaders of the Gush Emunim movment, attended the leadership conference despite his battle with serious illness. Received with heart-warming applause, Rabbi Porat opened the conference at International Convention Center in Jerusalem where his words generated great excitement and brought many to tears when he spoke. In his address, Rabbi Porat began with an explanation of how far settlers have come since the Six Day War, describing them as a huge force nothing can uproot. They say that all beginnings are difficult, but it's always been easy for us. We felt, says Porat, Our hearts were full. Our Zionism continues in the practical way Zionism's fathers, but adds a layer of Zionist faith - it revealed 'a new light.Religious Zionism is not just talking about a land of refuge from the nations,Rabbi Porat continued. It believes Zionism is about redemption. Rabbi Zvi Yehuda emphasized that we were coming home and we have forged the path.Rabbi Porat concluded that We may not always know the meaning of suffering on a personal level or general level, but without faith Zionism will not work. This understanding is what gives us the strength as a nation -- Go Forward! Minister of Education, Gideon Saar, opened his speech by praising the RZEI manager Avraham Lifshitz, who has breathed a new spirit into education since taking office. Later Saar said religious education embodies the values of education, sees great value in Israel's true love - the love of Israel and the Torah of Israel - and a great value in national idenity. As Minister of Education, Saar explained, he feels a deep obligation to strengthen the class room.

Saar noted that since taking office, the Ministry of Education under his leadership increased the religious education budget in many areas, adding thousands of hours of education. He said the budget allowed for a better integration of religious studies into the standard curriculum.Saar concluded that the Israeli education system also simultaneously strengthens science education and invests in students who have the skills to excel in these subjects. The purpose of strengthening science education, he noted,Is that it will allow Israel to retain a qualitative edge in the future. Also attending the conference were the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, RZEI director Rabbi Avraham Lifshitz, RZEI Chairman Rabbi Avi Gisser, as well as hundreds of education and shelter managers, supervisors, teachers and educators. PA Double Talks on Honoring Terrorist, Jerusalem Bombing
by Elad Benari MAR 28,11

Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), a media watchdog group that monitors the media in the Palestinian Authority, reported once again on Sunday about the double talks within the leadership in the PA.Once such incident revolves around the naming of a square in Ramallah after Dalal Mughrabi, the female terrorist who led the Coastal Road Massacre in March of 1978 which ended with 37 Israelis dead, including 13 children.
The reported noted how during an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 News last week, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas condemned the naming of a square after Mughrabi:Abbas: If there's incitement on my part, where is it? Israeli TV host: On TV.Abbas: No. I say, in Israel there's also incitement.Host: I'll give you another example. When the Israeli public sees the PA glorifies terrorists, calling a square for [terrorist] Dalal Mughrabi, a street for [terrorist] Ayyash.Abbas: These [namings] are not by the PA but by the municipalities. The municipalities have a degree of independence.Host: Are you personally against those commemorations?bbas: There's no doubt, I'm against it... Whatever we must do, you must do as well, but I condemn this action [naming square for Mughrabi].These comments, however, are complete opposite of comments made by Abbas during an interview he gave just over a year ago to the PA-based Al-Hayat Al-Jadida newspaper.

They [Israel] say about me that I carry out terrorist activities. What are those terrorist activities? That I search for those who sell land in Jerusalem and chase them. Of course I chase them, and I shall continue to do so. Is that a crime? [Israel says,] Does he [Abbas] not know that they [the PA] named a square after Dalal Mughrabi and he [Abbas] personally went [to the ceremony]? - Of course I did not go myself, but I do not deny [the naming]. Of course we want to name a square after her. Okay, what about [murdered Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam] Zeevi? They [Israelis] named a road after him [in the Jordan Valley], near brother Saeb [Erekat, i.e, the chief Fatah negotiator], and so on. What is it [that Israel wants]? That we renounce our history? How? We... carried out a military activity; can I then later renounce all that we have done? No, I don't renounce it.[Emphasis added.]The PMW report also notes how Abbas personally glorified Mughrabi in the past, funded a computer center named after her, and sponsored a birthday celebration on what would have been her 50th birthday, with senior Fatah officials present and including a live performance of songs and poems.Mughrabi is not the only terrorist glorified by the PA and specifically Abbas, notes the report. Abbas took part in the official red carpet military funeral of Amin Al-Hindi who was one of the senior planners of the murder of 11 Israeli athletes in the Munich Olympics in 1972. Another planner of the Munich Olympics attack, Muhammad Daoud Oudeh, was referred to by Abbas as a wonderful brother, companion, tough and stubborn, relentless fighter.

Abbas' Prime Minister also guilty of double talk
A separate reported released by PMW showed that PA Prime Minster Salam Fayyad is no different when it comes to double talk. Fayyad, who on Wednesday afternoon condemned as terror the bomb at a Jerusalem bus stop, had honored the same morning PA women terrorists, including two who drove suicide bombers to terror attacks killing five. Among those terrorists he honored was also one who placed a bomb in a bus station, an act identical to the one he condemned just a few hours later.I will not fail to mention with honor and admiration the resolve of the female prisoners, the fighters, and of all the prisoners of freedom who are imprisoned in the Israeli prisons, experiencing indescribable suffering, Fayyad was quoted by Al-Hayat Al-Jadida as saying. This requires that all of us intensify the effort to ensure their liberation from the occupation's chains and from the abuse of its [Israel's] executioners. The same newspaper also reported Fayyad’s condemnation of the terror attack in Jerusalem:
Prime Minister Fayyad condemned harshly the explosion which took place next to the Jerusalem central bus station. He emphasized that such actions bring catastrophes upon the Palestinian people. In an announcement, Fayyad said, I condemn this terror operation in the harshest terms, no matter who stands behind it. Fayyad wished the injured a speedy recovery. He said, It is shameful that after all the catastrophes which such actions have brought upon our people, and the heavy damage which they have brought to our struggle and to the justice of our cause, some Palestinian party still insists on renewing these shameful operations and scenes, under hollow slogans which our people no longer believe, and which stand in complete contrast to its legitimate attempt to earn freedom through peaceful means and through its determination to stand resolute and to remain upon its land.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

MKs to Discuss Anti-Jewish Racism on the Temple Mount
by Maayana Miskin MAR 28,11

There is basic, racist discrimination on the Temple Mount. Jews are discriminated against on the Temple Mount, period. That's the situation. So says Michael Fuah of the Likud's Jewish Leadership faction, which recently compiled its own report on discrimination on the Temple Mount after a State Comptroller's report was censored.
The Knesset has taken an interest in the Jewish Leadership faction's report, and the Internal Affairs committee plans to discuss its findings in a special hearing on Tuesday. The Temple Mount discrimination deals a blow to the values on which the state of Israel was founded, as a Jewish, democratic state, Fuah told Arutz Sheva's Hebrew-language news service. The situation has worsened in recent months, he added.

Fuah described the discrimination: “Everyone who has attempted to ascend the Temple Mount knows the reality, in which everyone with a Jewish look, a beard and kippah, experiences discrimination. He is pulled aside for extra checks while everyone else passes by unimpeded. In addition, Jews are prohibited to pray at the site. This discrimination is taking place at the place that is holiest to the Jewish people, he noted. In some cases, he said, individual Jews have been forbidden to ascend to the Temple Mount, which according to Judaism is the world's most holy place. They simply got a phone call in which [the police] told them that they cannot visit the Temple Mount, with no reason given, he said.He recalled the case of Rabbi Yosef Elbaum, of the Belz chassidic sect, who was prohibited to visit the Mount following an interview with Arutz Sheva in which he mentioned his efforts on behalf of the Movement for Establishing the Temple. Members of the group study Jewish law regarding the Temple and the Temple Mount.Rabbi Elbaum is sixty, and he never hurt anyone,Fuah said. Among Arabs, on the other hand, anyone over the age of 40 can enter the Temple Mount freely. He expressed hope that Members of Knesset would set clear criteria for cases in which individuals may be barred from the Temple Mount – thus allowing the people in question to appeal the decision. MK Yoel Hasson of Kadima has already come forward in support of allowing Jews to pray on the Temple Mount, he stated, and there is hope that others will do the same. The time has come to stop discriminating against Jews because they are Jews,he concluded.(Israel NationalNews.com)
