Hevron Rabbi's Tomb Found after 118 Years

Searchers recently found the tombstone of Rabbi Shaul Yehudah-Lieb Hacohen Liebin, a leader in the Chabad-chassidic community of Hevron who passed away 118 years ago. Over the course of time, the memory of his exact burial place was lost.The tomb was found on the Mount of Olives (Har Hazeitim) in Jerusalem.Rabbi Leibin's descendants will gather Friday to hold a memorial service at his grave. Following the service, they will tell stories about his life, and about the Chabad community of Hevron.

Rabbi Liebin served as a rabbi in several communities in Ukraine. In 1887, he came to the land of Israel and settled in Hevron, where he was appointed to lead the Ashkenazi Jewish community in the city, and to join the Beit Din (religious court). In his later years, he moved to Jerusalem.The Jewish community of Hevron continued to flourish after Rabbi Liebin left, until Jews were expelled from the city in the brutal 1929 pogrom, in which local Arabs murdered 67 of their Jewish neighbors and maimed many more. Most survived, some with the help of Arab families; the British army then forced the survivors out of the city.Jews returned to Hevron only after the Six Day War, when the city was reunited with the rest of Israel after 19 years of Jordanian rule. Israelis living in Binyamin have decided that if Israeli roads are open to Palestinian Authority traffic, formerly Arab only roads should be open to everyone as well. Dozens of residents of Talmonim took action on Tuesday, driving along a road that is usually used exclusively by PA Arabs.The road they chose runs between Neve Tzuf and Nachliel, and passes the Arab village of Dir Amar. The road is not officially closed by Jews, but has become a de-facto Arab-only road.The next step is to use roads that are officially closed to Jews, organizers explained. If the army is going to open roads to Arabs and put us in danger, we will travel on the roads that are [now] closed to us, they said.Many roads that for years were used only by Israelis have been opened to PA traffic in recent months. The roads, built by Israel and formerly used by Israelis and PA Arabs alike, were closed to PA traffic almost a decade ago following hundreds of terrorist attacks, many of them fatal.Israelis have protested that reopening the roads will put them in danger. UK More Interested in Islam, 100,000 Have Converted

A study conducted by Swansea University for the British group Faith Matters has found that UK citizens are increasingly interested in Islam, with the number of converts to Islam nearly doubling in 10 years. An estimated total of 100,000 have converted to Islam, 5,200 of them in 2010.In 2001, it was estimated that 60,000 British citizens had converted to Islam.Of the most recent converts, two-thirds are women. Most are white and native to Britain. The average age of new converts is 27.

One in four believe there is a natural conflict between being devoutly Muslim and being a British citizen. More than half said they had met with a negative response from family regarding their conversion.When asked what they believe to be the negative aspects of British society, the converts cited alcohol consumption, sexual permissiveness, and unrestrained consumerism.Similar studies in France and Germany found that approximately 4,000 people convert to Islam each year in both countries.
Faith Matters director Fiyaz Mughal said the precise number of converts to Islam is unknown, but that it is clear that the number has risen dramatically over the past decade. Converts could play an important role in both British and Muslim society by helping to reconcile the two worlds, and by disentangling cultural norms... which blur the true essence of Islam, Mughal opined.Britain has faced challenges integrating its Muslim population. Confirmed: Ventura’s Conspiracy Theory Episodes Disappearing from DVRs

Emails sent to Infowars.com and comments posted on Alex Jones’ flagship websites today provide multiple confirmations that episodes of Jesse Ventura’s popular truTV show Conspiracy Theory are disappearing from the DVRs of TiVo, Comcast, DirectTV and AT&T customers.Shows finding their way to the digital memory hole include the already heavily censored Police State episode and shows on the JFK assassination and the worldwide water conspiracy.All of the shows that we have recorded on our Direct TV DVR of Jesse Ventura’s Show season 1 & 2 was removed without mine and my husband’s permission, an email received on December 27 explains. We do not have any setting’s on the DVR which would allow or permit the shows to be erased and deleted from our Direct TV Receiver/ Recorder.Alex is right, a comment on the InfowarMovies states. I had 7 episodes of Ventura in my directv dvr. All of them marked as keep. The police state episode is gone. I think when they do code updates is when they erase. This is nuts! I have AT&T Uverse and the Fema camp episode has been erased from my DVR, reports a comment on Paul Joesph Watson’s story this morning about the episode appearing on YouTube.TiVo has admitted monitoring DVR units. For instance, in 2004, the company said Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl was the most replayed moment ever measured. TiVo said it used its technology to measure audience behavior among 20,000 users during the Super Bowl, CNN reported on February 23, 2004.On December 2, Infowars.com reported upon a series of inconsistencies with the re-airing and promotion for the Police State FEMA camp segment.

Heavy floods leave at least 35 dead in Brazil

SAO PAULO – Authorities in Brazil say four people from the same family have died in a mudslide in the interior of Sao Paulo state, and civil defense officials say heavy flooding have killed at least 35 people and forced more than 30,000 out of their homes across the country.Officials in the city of Jundiai said Thursday the four people, including two girls, died when their house collapsed because of a mudslide triggered by downpours.The worst hit state is Minas Gerais, where civil defense authorities said on Thursday that 16 people either drowned or were buried in mudslides. More than 13,000 were forced to seek shelter.Heavy rains since Christmas in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states have killed more than 20 people and left about 20,500 homeless.

Forecasters said there is no immediate threat from cold weather but a turn to bitter cold at the end of the 10-day period bears watching.No significant cold weather threats are seen for the Midwest soft red winter wheat region, despite mention of much-below normal temperatures at times.

ROCKHAMPTON/PERTH, Australia (Reuters) – Australia's flood-stricken coal industry faced lengthy disruptions on Thursday, with one miner saying it could take weeks to drain its pits of water and a major port suspending export shipments because of a lack of coal.Floods have swamped mines in Queensland state, paralyzing operations that produce 35 percent of Australia's estimated 259 million tonnes of exportable coal. Australia contributes two-thirds of global coking-coal exports, needed to make steel.About 200,000 people scattered across an area the size of France and Germany combined have been affected by the flooding in Queensland. Damage from the floods, the worst in the state in 50 years, has been estimated at $5 billion.One of Queensland's two major coal ports, Gladstone, suspended exports on Thursday, starved of sufficient supplies from water-logged and marooned mines further inland.

Gladstone port normally blends together different coals at the waterfront before loading ships, but a port spokeswoman said it had insufficient quantities to continue blending to the same standard. It was now awaiting further guidance from miners.It's the coal companies' call as to whether they start loading that coal or not, the spokeswoman told Reuters.One commodities analyst estimated that 45 to 50 million tonnes of metallurgical-grade coal needed to make steel were under force majeure declarations, which temporarily release miners from delivery obligations.That doesn't mean those tonnes are lost to the market, they are just saying there is a risk they might not be delivered on time, said UBS commodities analyst Tom Price.Also, production of roughly 8 percent of the world's thermal coal production -- used in power generation -- has been temporarily eliminated by the flooding, according to Australia & New Zealand Bank analyst Mark Pervan.Analysts expect steel coals to rise as much as a third to $300 a tonne in the aftermath of the floods, sweeping thermal coal prices higher in the process.You can't have a lift in metallurgical coal prices without dragging up thermal coal, Price said.

Asian steel-makers are anxious over Australian supplies, worried the disruptions could outlast their stockpiles, which typically hold around a month's worth of consumption.London-listed Anglo American, one of the nation's top four miners of steel-making coal, said it could take some weeks to pump water out of its flooded mines and that it was too early to say when its collieries could resume operation.Our focus is currently on mobilizing our people and other resources and de-watering flooded coal pits, which we estimate will take some weeks, Seamus French, head of the group's metallurgical coal division, said in a statement.Anglo has about seven coal mines in Queensland, the state that accounts for most of Australia's coking-coal exports.Anglo's major rivals, Rio Tinto, Xstrata and BHP Billiton, have also been hit by the floods, and all have made force majeure declarations.The flooding is already receding in some coal fields, but all four major producers still face supply disruptions and cannot say when operations would return to normal.In 2008, flooding stalled some mines for as long as six months, but others began producing within six weeks, said Andrew Harrington, an analyst at Patersons Securities in Sydney.Mines then raised output to recoup losses and ended the year about 10 percent below where they otherwise would have been.This time around, it's happening a lot earlier, it looks a lot worse, and we're still seeing more rainfall, said Harrington.

Floodwaters have begun to slowly recede in some districts in Queensland, but were still rising in some areas further south, including around the town of St George. In Rockhampton, a cattle town of 75,000, muddy flood waters had dropped a few inches overnight despite more heavy rains but it will take days before a cleanup can begin. Heavy rains hit Australia's flood-drenched northeast

ROCKHAMPTON, Australia (AFP) – Heavy rains threatened further flooding in Australia's drenched northeast Thursday as besieged Rockhampton cut supplies to irresponsible residents who refused to leave water-bound homes.Torrential downpours could cause flash-flooding and worsen existing floods, the weather bureau said, as water levels slowly started to recede in regional centre Rockhampton, a town virtually surrounded by a brown inland sea.Australia's coal-mining and farming belt near Brisbane is suffering biblical floods across an area the size of Texas, after La Nina, a weather system, deluged Queensland state with its wettest year on record.

Waters peaked in Rockhampton at lower levels than feared and slowly started to recede, while downstream other communities braced for the floods. The disaster, described as the state's worst, has inundated or cut off 40 towns.Entire towns have been airlifted as the murky tide gushes across Queensland, destroying crops, roads and bridges and sweeping 10 people to their deaths, along with thousands of animals.

BP, Transocean shares shrug off U.S. oil spill report

LONDON (Reuters) – Shares in BP and Transocean rose on Thursday as investors bet a new U.S. Presidential panel report that spread the blame for the country's worst-ever oil spill meant the firms would avoid the massive costs of a gross negligence charge.BP's London-listed shares were up 1.6 percent at 507.6 pence at 1100 GMT (6 a.m. ET), while shares in Transocean's Swiss-listed shares were up 3.9 percent. The STOXX 600 European oil and gas sector index was up 1.2 percent, on higher oil prices.

One top 10 investor in BP said the fact that the blame for the blowout was shared with drilling contractor Transocean and well cementer Halliburton suggested the London-based oil major was less likely to face gross negligence charges.Under U.S. law, BP faces fines of $5 billion because the spill happened on its exploration block.However, the fine could rise above $21 billion if Europe's second-largest oil company by market value was found to have been grossly negligent in the run-up to the blast.Peter Hitchens, oil analyst at Panmure Gordon, said comments made in the report that the management failure which caused the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig reflected industry-wide flaws, also made BP appear less culpable.And while the report was damning, Richard Griffith, analyst at Evolution Securities said it could also mean BP can offload some of the costs of cleaning up the spill onto its contractors.The report may provide grounds for BP to claw back monies from license partners and possibly Transocean and Halliburton, he said in a research note.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Record high food prices are moving to the top of the agenda for many Asian policymakers as the prospect of higher inflation in 2011 poses a major threat to the region's strong revival from the global financial crisis.The United Nations' food agency (FAO) said on Wednesday that food prices hit a record high last month, moving beyond levels of 2008, when riots broke out in countries as far afield as Egypt, Cameroon and Haiti.Food inflation in many Asian countries, including China and India, is already in double digits, raising fears that the price pressures could spread more broadly to other sectors and pose a threat to both economic and social stability as millions of Asians live in poverty.The FAO said sugar and meat were at their highest since its records began in 1990. Prices were at their highest since 2008 crisis levels for wheat, rice, corn and other cereals.

Benchmark prices solely in Asia for rice suggested a different picture.The region's staple food now stands at $535 per tonne -- less than half its 2008 levels of more than $1,000 a tonne that prompted several governments at the time to impose curbs on exports to protect their domestic markets.However, the fact that rice is far from the lofty levels of the 2007/2008 food crisis should offer no comfort for policymakers.I wouldn't be terribly surprised if 2011 resembles in many ways 2008, said Frederic Neumann, regional economist at HSBC in Hong Kong.Food price inflation could really go into double digits across the region and rise to such an extent that it undermines the purchasing power of households and as a result then slows consumer demand and overall economic growth, he said.And that's a problem for Asian economic growth. But really it's also a problem for the rest of the world because as the Asian consumer increasingly is helping to stabilise world demand, it's actually a challenge of wider global significance.Surging food prices have proved a trigger for social protests in the past, forcing governments to cave in to demands for action. They were a factor in the fall from power of Indonesia's long-term autocrat Suharto in 1998.Last year, wheat futures prices rose 47 percent, buoyed by a series of weather events including drought in Russia and its Black Sea neighbours. U.S. corn rose more than 50 percent and U.S. soybeans jumped 34 percent.

PRICES TO KEEP RISING

Luke Matthews, a commodity strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said there was little reason to expect any let up in the global rally in food prices.We do believe that the structural drivers behind high food prices are likely to persist for some time, he said. We have tight stocks in the corn and sugar markets, we have world wheat stocks susceptible to turn lower with forecasts of La Nina to persist for the next 3 months or so.La Nina is a weather pattern that brings cooling temperatures, resulting in higher rainfall in Australia, a major wheat and sugar exporter, and parts of Southeast Asia.The structural drivers make food commodities and the stocks of food companies hot investment sectors this year, said Terence Wong, an analyst at brokerage DMG in Singapore.He cited vegetable grower and processor China Minzhong and animal drug maker China Animal Healthcare as his top tips in the local market. Fan Cheuk Wan, head of Asia Pacific research at the private banking division of Credit Suisse, favours Indonesian palm oil firm Indofood Agri Resources and suggested investors avoid companies that could get hit by price controls. World Bank President Robert Zoellick urged governments in a newspaper opinion column to avoid protectionist measures as food prices rise and called upon the Group of 20 leading economies to take steps to make sure the poor get adequate food supply. Still, Asia's rapidly rising consumption as developing economies such as India, China and Indonesia emerge on the world stage is a major factor behind the rise in food prices.China, for example, is expected to buy 60 percent of internationally traded soybeans in 2010/11, double its purchases of four years earlier.Several countries have implemented measures to try to keep food prices under control, worried about a repeat of the 2007/2008 crisis, when surging commodity prices prompted a jump in inflation and left many countries with a deep trade deficit.

India's food prices rose to a one-year high of more than 18 percent in the year to the end of December, data on Thursday showed. That, along with rising fuel prices, is the main reason analysts expect the central bank to raise rates this month. The Indian government has operated a range of measures for years to ensure stable food prices, but since last year has boosted the release of national stocks of grains and has pledged to continue with duty-free imports of crude vegetable oils.In China, several cities have implemented direct controls to limit food price increases and the central government has vowed to eliminate speculation in the country's commodities markets.The cost of food rose 11.7 percent in the year to November, while non-food items were up just 1.9 percent. But, reflecting concerns that inflation is creeping beyond food to the wider economy, consumer goods prices and housing costs showed clear jumps.Fu Bingtao, an economist with the Agricultural Bank of China in Beijing, said in a report that grains, the country's most important food, would rise in price in 2011 by 10 percent, adding to an 11.7 percent rise in 2010.Speculative trading and hoarding of specific agricultural products may continue, he said.Indonesia's president called on Thursday for households to plant food to help combat inflation. POLICY RESPONSE

Higher interest rates do little to ease pressure on food prices. Demand is inelastic because people have to eat, but current price pressures are largely supply-led, so tighter monetary policy would not directly help.The danger, however, is that food inflation spreads to the wider economy.I think there's an urgent need to be more pre-emptive in tightening monetary policy to prevent some of these inflation pressures from erupting, said Neumann.Neumann said some central banks had taken some action in terms of monetary tightening, but more needed to be done.On average, interest rates in Asia are about 150 basis points below the neutral level, that is, even if we see marginal rate hikes coming through, this wouldn't necessarily amount to a tightening of monetary policy, rather an easing of the stimulus.Therefore much more aggressive action would be warranted at this stage.South Korea, like other Asian countries that run trade and current account surpluses, could give more room to its currency to rise to offset rising import costs on food.But that presents another dilemma for policymakers trying to curb a flood of portfolio capital from investors turning away from the sluggish growth in developed economies.Higher interest rates or the likelihood of a rising currency would just encourage further inflows, analysts say. BRUSSELS (AFP) – Confidence in the eurozone economy rose to the highest level for three years last month, a bright spot in a bad year which the single currency area wants to put behind it, key EU data showed on Thursday.Regional powerhouses France and Germany carried the stronger-than-expected rise, but in a sign that the euro has yet to shake off its troubles, southern members hit by high debts and public deficits continued to fall back.The survey underlines the view that the peripheral economies are set for another very tough year, said Ben May, European economist at market research firm Capital Economics.The Economic Sentiment Indicator published by the European Commission rose by 1.1 points to 106.2 points across the 16-nation single currency area -- now 17 since Estonia joined on January 1, 2011. It was the highest level since it peaked at 106.5 points in October 2007.In the wider 27-nation European Union, confidence rose 1.0 point to 106.1 points.Sentiment in most EU countries improved but confidence fell in Spain and Greece which were forced to implement tough austerity measures to bring down high deficits.France led the pack with a gain of 2.5 points, followed by 2.4 points in the Netherlands and 1.5 points in Germany. But Spain fell back 0.9 points while Greece retreated by 1.4 points.It is notable that there were marked divergences in sentiment between the individual economies, reinforcing the impression of a two-speed eurozone, said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight.

In another sign of Germany's robust economic health, industrial orders leapt by a surprise 5.2 percent in November from the level in October, according to national data.The eurozone's debt crisis began last year with a bailout of ?110 billion ($144 billion) for Greece and was followed by a rescue of ?67 billion for Ireland in December. Analysts warn that Spain and Portugal may be next in line for help.The high confidence in the eurozone economy in December was fuelled by strong business sentiment, but consumers were less than buoyant, the European Commission survey showed.The data suggest that consumers may have been more spooked by the heightened eurozone sovereign debt crisis than businesses,Archer said.It is also likely that consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the fiscal tightening that will increasingly kick in across the Eurozone during 2011, as well as by higher inflation, he said.Sentiment in industry rose sharply, by 3.6 points in the EU and 3.3 points in the eurozone, while consumer confidence fell 1.1 points in the EU and 1.6 points in the eurozone.In another indication of consumer jitters, retail sales in the eurozone dropped by 0.8 percent in November compared to the previous month's level, according to the Eurostat data agency.

Fear stalks Egypt's churches over Coptic Christmas

CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt tightened security around churches on the eve of Coptic Christmas after a New Year's Day bombing killed up to 23 and sparked angry protests by Christians demanding more protection from Muslim militants.Officials suspect an al Qaeda-inspired bomber was behind the blast outside a church in the port city of Alexandria. Islamist websites had carried repeated threats to attack churches and have vowed to strike again.The blast ripped through a crowd, scattering body parts, destroying cars and shattering windows.I no longer want to stay in this country, said Emad Atef, 25, a Christian who is a carpenter. I am getting the paperwork to leave. I don't feel safe and neither do those around me.Extra police were deployed outside main churches, streets nearby were cleared of cars and some roads were blocked by security measures.Egypt's Muslims and Christians have co-existed for centuries, with occasional clashes often the result of family or business disputes or cross-faith relationships, not ideology. Egypt church attack to fuel sectarian tension.Christians, who form one tenth of the population, complain of discrimination in the job market and a lack of representation in government, the army and business. A perception of growing intolerance is leading some to shun their Muslim compatriots.

The church bombed at New Year was previously targeted in 2006 when a man assaulted worshippers at two churches during Mass, killing one person and wounding five.A year later, Christian shops in the area were attacked during the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday after rumours spread of a love affair between a Muslim woman and Christian man.One year ago, six Copts and a Muslim policeman were killed in a drive-by shooting outside a church after midnight Mass. RECIPE FOR VIOLENCE

The Alexandria attack was the worst in decades against Christians and drew attention to the state's handling of sectarian riots. Rights groups say Egyptian police have been too slow to punish violence motivated by religion, sending a message that it is acceptable.Copts said the government should prosecute the rioters instead of urging victims to accept reconciliation. It's a recipe for a recurrence of these violent attacks,said Hossam Bahgat, head of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
Some pointed to a deeper problem -- a gradual Islamisation of education promoting a single, Islamic version of Egypt's identity that belies a diverse cultural history.
Our school books are preaching Islamisation, said Youssef Sidhom, the Christian editor of weekly newspaper Watani. Coptic history of Egypt is to a vast extent withdrawn... The syllabus is using Islam as the source of all traditions and norms.

Some young Copts, usually fiercely loyal to their church leaders, have begun to criticize them for keeping too low a profile and allowing political Islam to influence state policy.Many within the Coptic community are now feeling a threat to their very survival, their very presence, said Bahgat. Israeli, Egyptian leaders to discuss peacemaking

JERUSALEM – Israel's prime minister says he will discuss Mideast peacemaking with Egypt's leader, as well as the common threat posed by Iranian-backed militant groups.
Benjamin Netanyahu says Gaza-based Hamas militants and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas want to disturb the quiet but we will not let them.Both groups have warred with Israel. Egypt is worried by their Islamic militancy and Iranian ties.Netanyahu said in a statement that he and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak would also discuss stalemated Israeli-Palestinian peace talks when they meet in Egypt later Thursday.The Palestinians say they will not resume talks without a complete freeze in settlement building.Israel rejects that demand.

Angry crowd forces Israeli PM to halt speech

JERUSALEM – Angry relatives of 42 Israelis killed in a huge forest fire last month forced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop his speech Wednesday at a ceremony honoring the dead.Family members shouted that he should be held responsible for the handling of the disaster response. Others directed their anger at Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who was escorted out of the hall. Firefighting services are part of his ministry.Israel's firefighting services were unprepared for the huge fire, which destroyed swaths of forest in Israel's north. Since Israel lacked any suitable aircraft, Netanyahu had to appeal for help from abroad. Several nations, including the United States, sent firefighting planes that helped douse the blaze after four days.During Wednesday's disturbance, bodyguards rushed toward the podium and formed a line to keep people away from Netanyahu.Relatives yelled at him to resign and called the ceremony a disgrace. They objected to his attempt to identify with their personal pain without taking responsibility for the tragedy.We will find out the truth. We will not rest until we find out the truth, shouted one man from the crowd.

Netanyahu had to stop talking for several minutes while security officers restored order.Among those who heckled Netanyahu was Danny Rosen, the partner of Israel's highest-ranking female police officer, Ahuva Tomer, the police chief of the northern city of Haifa. She was killed when flames enveloped a bus she was accompanying. It was carrying prison service workers toward a jail, where they were sent to evacuate prisoners.The flames reached the outskirts of Haifa, Israel's third-largest city.
Netanyahu has attended a number of functions and meetings of officials in the aftermath of the fire, by far the largest forest fire in Israel's history.
