JERUSALEM – After years of languishing in makeshift shelters in the Horn of Africa, the final remnants of an Ethiopian community claiming Jewish descent received permission Sunday to move to Israel.Israel's Cabinet voted to allow 7,846 Ethiopians to immigrate to the Jewish state over the next four years — announcing it would open its gates to Ethiopian immigration one last time, taking them in gradually to give them the best chance of acclimating to their new home.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet, We have a moral commitment as Jews, as the people of Israel, to find a solution for the Ethiopians, many of whom have relatives in Israel.

Eight thousand Ethiopian Jews were spirited to Israel in 1984 and another 14,000 in 1990 in secret airlifts. Thousands more have arrived on their own.Since 1990, however, most Ethiopians moving to Israel have been Falash Mura, a community whose ancestors converted from Judaism to Christianity under duress about 100 years ago to avoid discrimination, but kept some Jewish customs. About 40,000 Falash Mura live in Israel.Israel initially rejected their ties to Judaism, but religious officials later declared them the seed of Israel. Falash Mura were formally converted to Orthodox Judaism upon their arrival in Israel, bringing the total number of Ethiopian immigrants to about 85,000. In comparison, about 100,000 immigrants from North America live in Israel.After the last of the recognized members of the community left the Ethiopian village of Gondor in 2008, more Ethiopians came forward and claimed that they, too, were Falash Mura. Republican group to urge Fed to drop QE2: report

LONDON (Reuters) – A group of Republican-leaning economists will launch a campaign this week calling on U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to drop his plan to buy $600 billion more in Treasury bonds, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The Fed's latest policy decision has come under unusually heavy criticism from Republican lawmakers, and the central bank is likely to face intense scrutiny when a new Congress is seated in January.The planned asset purchases risk currency debasement and inflation, and we do not think they will achieve the Fed's objective of promoting employment, the WSJ quoted the economists as saying in a letter to be published as a full-page advertisement this week.The 10-year Treasury yield hit a two-month high, helping the dollar hit a six-week high against a basket of currencies, partly in response to the WSJ report.The letter was signed by economists including Stanford University's Michael Boskin, once chairman of former President George W. Bush's Council of Economic Advisers, and John Taylor, a monetary policy scholar who served in both Bush administrations.Currently, the Fed appears on track to buy the entire $600 billion in U.S. government debt, barring any big unexpected shift in the economy's prospects.If anything, lingering weakness and renewed concerns about global credit markets may lead top officials to lean toward doing more rather than less.The independent Fed has already fought off a legislative effort that would have subjected its monetary policy decisions to congressional audits, although that proposal could resurface in the coming year.(Reporting by Hugh Lawson, editing by Mike Peacock)

Getting home for the holidays could involve paying the year's highest price for gasoline.

The national average for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline on Monday was just 3 cents shy $2.92 a gallon, the high set back in May. Analysts expect more upward price creep before the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend starts next Wednesday.There's no expectation of a holiday driving frenzy, however. Instead, the higher gas prices can be traced to the rising price of oil, up 15 percent since Labor Day and 4 percent this month. Investors worried about a sluggish U.S. economy and weaker dollar have parked their money in commodities like oil.The national average for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $2.892 Monday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That was about 6 cents more than a month ago and nearly 26 cents more than a year ago.Fundamentally, we shouldn't see prices that high, said Fred Rozell, retail pricing director at Oil Price Information Service in Wall, N.J.Rozell said the national average may flirt with $3 a gallon before year's end. PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn was more cautious, calling $3 possible but not inevitable.Many Americans already are paying $3 a gallon or more. For example, drivers in California, Oregon, Hawaii, Washington, Illinois and New York are seeing prices in a range between $2.981 a gallon and $3.524 a gallon.

In Los Angeles, the retail price was $3.155 cents a gallon, up about 4 cents from a week ago. Chicago-area drivers paid an average of $3.11 a gallon, an increase of a penny from a week ago. Detroit had a 2 cent drop, but drivers there are still paying $3 a gallon.The lowest average prices were found in Colorado, Texas and parts of the South.Meanwhile, oil prices were little changed after earlier gettng a boosts from a report showing U.S. retail sales rose for the fourth consecutive month in October, buoyed by stronger demand in the automobile market.The Commerce Department said consumer spending rose 1.2 percent, nearly double what analysts were expecting.
Excluding autos, however, sales advanced at a more moderate 0.4 percent in October following a 0.5 percent rise in sales excluding autos in September.Economists don't expect consumers to significantly boost spending while unemployment remains high.

Still, oil traders were encouraged by the report, after crude fell Friday on concerns that China would take steps to cool its economic growth.The market is going to take a wait-and-see position. I think people think they maybe overreacted to it a little bit on Friday and they're creeping back into the market,Flynn said.Christof Ruhl, the chief economist at BP PLC, expects oil prices to hover around $80 a barrel in 2011. He said there might be a little upward shift if the economy continues to grow, though the sustainability of China's economic growth was a key risk.Benchmark oil for December delivery slipped 2 cents to $84.86 a barrel in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.In other early Nymex trading in December contracts, heating oil added 0.77 cent to $2.3709 a gallon, gasoline rose 2.49 cents to $2.1950 a gallon and natural gas rose 4.6 cents to $3.845 per 1,000 cubic feet. S.Lanka floods force up to 300,000 from their homes

COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka sent in troops to rescue residents marooned in the capital Colombo on Thursday after the heaviest rains in 18 years flooded the city, forcing up to 300,000 people from their homes.At least one man was struck down by lightning and killed while a woman was injured when her house collapsed, disaster management officials said.The authorities set up 12 temporary shelters in and around the capital to accommodate the victims of the heaviest rains since June 1992.The national assembly was flooded, forcing parliamentary Speaker Chamal Rajapakse to take a boat to inspect the building, located on an island in a man-made lake, which is usually reached by a causeway.MPs were later ferried over in military amphibious vehicles for a five-minute session, held in darkness, during which they passed six pieces of legislation under bipartisan agreement.The red-carpeted main chamber itself was dry, but the assembly's lower floor was under more than a metre (three feet) of water, like other areas of the capital where thousands of homes were inundated.Disaster management officials said between 250,000 and 300,000 people had been driven from their homes by the floodwaters.Irrigation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the flooding was caused by the loss of marshes in Colombo which had previously acted as a sponge to soak up water during downpours.

Most of them have been drained for housing development.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.Telephones and Internet connections were also cut because of lightning damage to telecommunication towers, while the authorities shut most public schools and cancelled a national examination.Many banks shut down their automatic teller machines as their computer networks were affected by the lightning. Most landline telephone connections were out, and fallen trees brought down power lines.A three-day practice match between the West Indies cricket team and a select XI was called off as the venue for the game in Colombo's fashionable Cinnamon Gardens area was knee-deep in water, officials said.On the roads police deployed extra officers as traffic lights failed and some of the flooded thoroughfares were blocked with stalled vehicles. Heavy rains are due to intermonsoonal activity and we can expect more rain,national weather chief G. D. Samarasinghe said. Anger at Haiti cholera outbreak turns violent

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) – Protesters in northern Haiti set fire to a police station and clashed with UN peacekeepers Monday as anger turned to violence in response to a cholera outbreak that has claimed almost 1,000 lives.Doctors and police in the second city of Cap-Haitien said around a dozen people were being treated for bullet wounds, some of them serious, although there was no confirmation from the United Nations that live rounds were fired.The blue helmets (peacekeepers) fired tear gas, and we know that there were people hurt, but we don't know how they were injured or in what circumstances, UN spokesman Vicenzo Pugliese said.Doctor Yves Jasmin, the top local health official, told AFP around 10 people had been taken to the Justinien hospital, but described the injuries as light. A police source put the number at 14, including two serious wounds.The situation is very difficult, and there is a lot of violence in the city. I am blocked in the city, and I can't get to the hospital, Jasmin said.Demonstrators set a police station and vehicles inside ablaze as they went on the rampage, accusing the government of leaving the population to die, witnesses said.Protesters also vented anger at the UN peacekeeping force MINUSTAH. The Nepalese contingent that arrived in the country shortly before the outbreak emerged in mid-October is blamed by many for being the source of the epidemic.

The UN has promised to investigate claims the outbreak emanated from septic tanks at a camp near the central town Mirebalais where the Nepalese are based, but the World Health Organization has said the source is not important.A second protest on Monday reportedly involved stones being thrown at the UN peacekeeping unit in the central town of Hinche, less than 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Mirebalais.Some 400 people gathered in front of the UN buildings, but the demonstration has been dispersed without difficulty, Pugliese said.Less than a month after the emergence of Haiti's first cholera outbreak in half a century, the number of confirmed number of fatalities was at 917 and is rising by more than 50 a day.Most deaths have been in central and northern Haiti, with the disease not yet widespread in the capital Port-au-Prince, badly damaged in a January quake which killed 250,000 people and left 1.3 homeless.Officials fear the scale of the epidemic could increase exponentially if cholera infiltrates makeshift camps where hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors live in cramped and unsanitary conditions.Some 200 of the cholera deaths have been in the north and 100 in Cap-Haitien, public health officials said. Thousands return to slopes of Indonesian volcano

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Thousands of villagers returned to ash-covered homes along the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano Monday, after the government said some areas well away from the fiery crater appeared out of danger from another eruption.The notoriously unpredictable volcano in the heart of Java island roared back to life on Oct. 26, killing more than 259 people in a series of eruptions, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Merapi was still rumbling and spewing searing ash and debris Monday, said state volcanologist Surono, but activity has dropped sharply in recent days.After spending nearly three weeks in crowded emergency camps, the villagers headed up Mount Merapi loaded down with mats, blankets and clothes to find almost everything they had was gone, said Lilik Sujati, the chief of Jati, a village on Mount Merapi.Their houses are covered in thick ash; their crops can't be harvested, he said. We need to find some way to help them. Many don't have anything to eat.The government has responded to the slow down in activity by reducing the danger-zone — which had been at 12 miles (20 kilometers) for more than a week — to six miles (10 kilometers) from the crater on the northern and western flanks.

Israeli government seen accepting new settlement freeze

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will probably win narrow approval from his coalition government for a U.S. proposal to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building, Israeli political sources said Sunday.The Palestinians halted peace talks after Israel's 10-month partial construction moratorium expired in September. The Obama administration has offered Israel diplomatic and defense perks to renew the freeze for 90 days, giving negotiations a chance.Netanyahu, who visited the United States last week, convened his cabinet to outline the proposal, which he said was still being drafted with the Americans. Once ready, it would be put to a vote in Israel's 15-minister security cabinet, he said.

In any event, I insist that any proposal meet the State of Israel's security needs, both in the immediate term and vis-a-vis the threats that we will face in the coming decade, Netanyahu said in remarks broadcast by Israeli media.The deal includes a U.S. undertaking not to request further extensions of the freeze, and to shield Israel against hostile resolutions in the United Nations. The Palestinians have mooted seeking U.N. support for a unilateral statehood declaration.The Obama administration would also ask Congress to approve giving Israel $3 billion worth of advanced F-35 jets. MOUNT ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia – Nearly 3 million Muslims performing the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia climbed the rocky desert Mount Arafat on Monday, chanting that they have come to answer God's call.The white-robed pilgrims began their ascent at dawn, covering the Mountain of Mercy at Arafat in an endless sea of white as their chants of Labyek Allah — or Here I am, God, answering your calling — reverberated.The climb is one of the cornerstones of the pilgrimage, which is required from every able-bodied Muslim at least once in his life. It is the site where Islam's Prophet Muhammad delivered his farewell sermon, and Muslims believe on this day the doors of heaven open to answer prayers and grant forgiveness.Saudi Arabia's top cleric, Grand Mufti Sheik Abdul-Aziz Al Sheik, called on worshippers in a midday sermon to espouse moderation and said Islam would survive what he described as attempts to defame the faith.Islam will remain strong in the face of the vicious campaign that is attacking it, he said at the Namira mosque. Israeli official: Hamas rockets can reach Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV, Israel – A senior Israeli intelligence official warned Sunday that Hamas rulers in the Gaza Strip have rockets that can travel 80 kilometers (50 miles) — a longer range than previously reported, which would put the coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv within range of its launchers.The official blamed Egypt, saying it was not doing enough to stem smuggling through a network of tunnels along the relatively short border between its Sinai desert and the Palestinian territory. An Egyptian security official reached for comment maintained that Egypt was combating the smuggling successfully.The Israeli intelligence official said that Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, is making very big efforts to build up their military capabilities ... building up their rocket capabilities in the Gaza Strip, and all this is happening because of one important thing: the smuggling of weapons through Egypt to the Gaza Strip.Egypt, along with Israel, imposed an embargo on Gaza in June 2007 after Hamas militants took control of the area, but the Israelis and United States have repeatedly urged Egypt to do more to prevent weapons smuggling into the territory.Most of the tunnels that are used to smuggle these rockets and explosives and other weapons are in an area of three to four kilometers, or up to 2.5 miles, said the official, who is privy to high-level intelligence information and briefed foreign correspondents on condition that he not be identified.We see it in our intelligence. We have photos of this. In many places we can show photos of Egyptian soldiers located less than 20 meters (yards) from the opening of a tunnel, and the tunnel is operating under his eyes, under his control, and nobody is doing anything about it.Egypt can stop all this smuggling of weapons within 24 hours if they want to do it, he said. There are enough Egyptian troops and policemen ... located on this border.Israeli lawmaker Arieh Eldad, a member of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, who has access to classified material, confirmed the official's assessment.Egypt is not a country that large quantities of weapons can enter without the authorities knowing, he told The Associated Press, charging that Egypt allows Hamas to acquire arms in exchange for the Islamic militants leaving Egypt alone.They could easily train police to look for the smugglers and they don't, Eldad said.

A senior Egyptian intelligence official said Egyptian security has been performing its duties successfully at the border with Gaza. He said they have intercepted 50 tons of explosives in the past two years and have been praised by Israeli intelligence for their work.The Gaza-Egypt border is only about 8 miles (13 kilometers) long.Egypt beefed up its presence at the border after Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in September 2005 and handed it over to Palestinian control. The smugglers responded by digging longer tunnels, penetrating past the immediate border area.The Egyptians have found 675 tunnels since the beginning of this year, the security official said.The United States has helped Egypt with advanced equipment to find out the tunnels through uncovering the underground movement and several Egyptians were trained in the U.S. to use these equipment. Egypt also built a steel wall along the border to prevent smugglers from penetrating into Egypt, though some smugglers have cut through it.Although Hamas has largely halted its rocket fire since a fierce Israeli military offensive in early 2009, the Israeli security official said the group's aim remained to strike at Israeli cities.Today there are rockets which are reaching 70 and 80 kilometers (45 to 50 miles) in the Gaza Strip ... so it means that we can sit here and talk and a rocket can fall on our heads within five minutes, the official said.That range would mean that rockets could reach Tel Aviv, Israel's business and cultural hub. About 2 million people live in the Tel Aviv area, which was targeted by Saddam Hussein's Iraq with Scud missiles during the 1991 Gulf War. The assessment indicated that Hamas has improved its capabilities in recent months. Past assessments have said Hamas rocket range was closer to 60 or 70 kilometers, or roughly 40 to 45 miles.On Sunday Israel's Channel 10 TV showed video of Israel's Iron Dome system knocking down rockets. The system is designed to protect Israel from rocket fire from Gaza and Lebanon. However, deployment has been delayed several times and now appears at least months away. The official charged that corruption is undermining any efforts to stop the smuggling from Egypt to Gaza. He said Egyptian officers and soldiers are being bribed to look the other way.

When an arms convoy goes through Egypt, lots of people are bribed along the way,he said. It's easy to bribe the guards and police on the border.On the other hand, the official said, intelligence cooperation with Egypt was otherwise effective: In other aspects we see Egypt, when they have concrete intelligence about terror attacks ... they are reacting most of the time very fast and trying to prevent these attacks.The Israeli intelligence official also said that Hamas' rival, the Palestinian Authority, was making a genuine and successful effort to maintain security and prevent attacks on Israel in the West Bank. Report: Iran to hold air defense war games

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran is scheduled to begin five days of nationwide air defense war games later this week, state television reported Sunday.The semiofficial Mehr news agency, meanwhile, said in a separate report that Iran was expected during the war games to unveil a locally made radar system with a range of some 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers).

The agency gave no details on the new radar system.

Iran's armed forces conduct several war games every year and frequently unveil new weapons and military systems during those exercises. Often, the capacity and effectiveness of these locally manufactured weapons and systems could not be independently verified.Iran's air defense exercises have in the past been linked to the country's preparations to deal with a possible air strike targeting its nuclear facilities. The West says Iran's nuclear program aims at making an atomic bomb. Iran denies the charge.The latest air defense war games will begin Tuesday.

Eyeing Iran, Israel slates missile shield for 2015

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel's multi-layered air defense network will be fully deployed by 2015, combining short-range rocket interceptors with kamikaze satellites that blow up ballistic missiles in space, officials said on Monday.Unveiled at a government-sponsored aerospace conference in Jerusalem, the production schedule corresponds to Israel's assessment of when Iran might develop nuclear weaponry.
Should the Islamic republic get the bomb, that could embolden allies Syria and Lebanese and Palestinian guerrillas in their own fights against the Jewish state.In the next two to five years, we will turn this vision into a reality, Colonel Zvika Haimovitch of the Israeli air defense corps said in a speech. Within the coming five years, we will see this doctrine implemented.Spurred by Hezbollah salvoes in the 2006 Lebanon war, Israel developed Iron Dome, which shoots down rockets with ranges of 5 to 70 km (3 to 45 miles). David's Sling, an interceptor for more powerful rockets, should be ready by 2013, Haimovitch said.The next tier of the shield is Israel's Arrow interceptor, which has been operational for a decade and is designed to knock out Iranian or Syrian ballistic missiles at high altitudes.

An Arrow III upgrade will launch a booster-rigged satellite beyond Earth's atmosphere to collide with the missile, said project director Yoav Turgeman of state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).We are talking about hermetic protection, Turgeman said. Even if the new Arrow misses the incoming threat, it will be far enough from Israel's borders to allow for a secondary interception.Turgeman said Arrow III, which like its predecessors is being underwritten by the United States, would be ready by 2014 or 2015. Its first live trial is expected in 2011. The projected cost of each interceptor missile is $2 million to $3 million.

Arrow III had previously been swathed in secrecy. Asked about the decision to go public with it at the International Aerospace Conference and Exhibition, an Israeli defense official said: Everything was done with the full backing and initiative of the Defense Ministry, given the current state of affairs.He appeared to be referring to Iran's uranium enrichment in defiance of international pressure to curb the process, which can produce fuel for bombs. Tehran says it is for energy only.Though the Israelis have hinted they could attack Iran pre-emptively, there are big tactical and diplomatic hurdles.The missile shield -- which officials envisage patching in, when needed, to U.S. interceptors such as Aegis -- suggests Israel is weighing a more defensive posture, girded with the deterrence offered by its own assumed atomic arsenal.Among the advantages of Arrow III cited by Turgeman was that its interception of a nuclear missile would not produce toxic debris, as this would burn up on re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Such planning is hard to reconcile with Israel's vow, dating back decades, to deny its enemies access to nuclear weaponry.

Arrow veteran Uzi Rubin raised another possible disincentive to a pre-emptive Israeli attack now: retaliation by Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas guerrillas from Gaza.In the absence of reliable air defenses, Rubin said in a speech, Israeli cities can be hit by as many as 13,000 rockets and missiles, some accurate to within 500 meters (yards) and carrying warheads with as much as a half-tonne of explosives.The greater Tel Aviv area alone could expect to suffer 1,500 strikes -- enough to guarantee damage to military headquarters, paralyze the economy and gut morale. Dozens of Iraqi Scud missiles sowed chaos in Tel Aviv during the 1991Gulf war. China, Russia urge Iran to show nuclear plans peaceful

BEIJING (Reuters) – The foreign ministers of China, Russia and India urged Iran on Monday to prove to the world that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, and urged a return to talks.The West suspects Iran of seeking nuclear weapons in a major threat to international security under the guise of a civilian research program. Tehran says its long concealed uranium enrichment drive is aimed only at generating electricity.The three foreign ministers recognize Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, they said in a joint statement released on the Chinese foreign ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn) after a meeting in China's Wuhan city.At the same time, Iran should restore the faith of the international community of the totally peaceful nature of its nuclear activities, they added.The only path to resolving the Iran nuclear issue is through dialogue, negotiations and other such peaceful methods.European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton wrote to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator on Friday accepting an offer to meet in Europe early next month to discuss Tehran's nuclear program.Following consultations with the six world powers which she will represent -- the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany -- Ashton wrote to Saeed Jalili accepting the offer of a meeting on December 5, but suggested Switzerland or Austria as the venue.If talks are agreed -- they have been under discussion for nearly six months -- it would be the first time in more than a year that Iran has met to discuss its nuclear program.

Hiroshima not shy of its atomic bomb legacy

HIROSHIMA, Japan – Unlike most of Japan, Hiroshima doesn't shy from its wartime past.

This bustling port city, the target of the world's first atomic bomb attack in 1945, made itself the main exhibit this weekend at an annual gathering of Nobel Peace Prize laureates — dedicated this year to abolishing nuclear weapons.Hiroshima often links events it hosts to its tragic history, such as a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum earlier this year. It is bidding for the 2020 Olympics with Nagasaki — the other Japanese city hit by an atomic bomb — under a Festival of Peace theme.Elsewhere in Japan, discussions of World War II are often tinged by guilt or nationalism. Tokyo's only major museum on the war is housed within a controversial war shrine. Even Nagasaki typically takes a more subdued approach.

Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba has increasingly circumvented Japan's national government as a global movement against nuclear arms gains momentum.He leads Mayors for Peace, with 4,300 member cities worldwide, and declared his city part of the Obamajority after the U.S. president's Prague speech last year in favor of denuclearization.We are at the position where we can proceed from the city level and galvanize this trend, he said at the Asia-Pacific forum.With its A-Bomb Dome, a burned-out building from the attack that has been preserved, and sprawling Peace Park at its center, the city is a symbol of the dangers of nuclear weapons.Japanese survivors gave heart-rending testimony at the weekend gathering of Nobel Peace Prize laureates, the first time the summit was held outside Europe.The significance of being in Hiroshima is that we are here, where for the first time in history an atomic bomb was dropped, where hundreds of thousands of people were killed and seriously injured and maimed for life, said Frederik Willem de Klerk, the former South African president who won a Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela in 1993 for his efforts to end apartheid.Overseas visitors to Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Museum have roughly doubled over the last 10 years to about 160,000 per year.

The museum's exhibits were altered in 1991 in part because some were considered too gruesome. Items on display include preserved scar tissue from radiation victims and a set of stone steps with the outline of a man who was incinerated in the blast.But with the increasing interest, a plan is being considered to make them more vivid again.There is a feeling that the exhibits became too clean, said museum official Shoji Oseto.Hiroshima's most powerful message comes from the survivors of the attack, known as hibakusha in Japanese. Most don't discuss their experiences openly, but those that do retell them repeatedly and have been dubbed special communicators by the current Japanese Cabinet.After children gave the Nobel laureates colorful origami cranes at an opening ceremony on Friday, hibakusha Akihiro Takahashi took the stage and told how he watched friends die and made his way home through charred corpses as a schoolboy after the atomic bombing on Aug. 6, 1945.Some members of the press corps were moved to tears, and the English translators at times choked up and lost the narrative.As the survivors get older, efforts are being made to introduce them to as many audiences as possible. Unfortunately we don't have much time. If we lose this opportunity, we lose a vital part of the Hiroshima legacy, said Yoshioka Tatsuya, founder of an organization called Peace Boat that has sailed hibakusha to various ports around the world.Within the city, memories of the devastation fade with each generation. Authorities are trying to educate children, busing students to the Peace Park each year and sending special teams of educators to schools in the region.In Hiroshima we are all educated about peace, said Maria Inoue, 16, who skipped school to attend the Nobel peace conference. China, India, Russia vow to deepen cooperation

BEIJING (AFP) – The foreign ministers of developing giants China, India and Russia pledged on Monday to step up cooperation in trade, energy and geopolitical affairs including climate change.The pledges were made in a joint communique after two days of meetings in the central Chinese city of Wuhan by Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Russian and Indian counterparts Sergei Lavrov and S.M. Krishna.The communique also said China, India and Russia had deepened cooperation on international and regional issues during the talks, but stressed that such cooperation would not target any other country.The foreign ministers said they supported a multi-polar, equitable and democratic world order and expressed their commitment to the use of multilateral instruments for finding solutions to global and regional issues.China and Russia are members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a grouping of mostly central Asian states that many view as a bid by China and Russia to counter global US influence.

India is an observer country in the body.

They also pledged to further explore potential cooperation in energy, high-tech sectors, innovation, aerospace, cultural exchanges and disaster relief, the communique said, without providing details.Noting that the global recovery remained uneven, fragile and unbalanced, the three ministers called for worldwide coordinated efforts to promote strong, sustainable and balanced growth and oppose all forms of protectionism.Russia's entry to the World Trade Organisation also received backing at the foreign ministers' meeting from China and India, already members of the global trade body.WTO chief Pascal Lamy said last month that Russia's 17-year membership bid was accelerating after significant progress in recent weeks.
