In the hubbub surrounding the battle of the flotilla, Netanyahu’s quick reversal of his decision to remain in the United States has been largely ignored. It turns out that Obama told him to leave because he didn’t want Netanyahu to use the White House as a stage on which to present Israel’s side of the story.The flotilla violence caught Netanyahu in the midst of a diplomatic trip to North America. He was in the Canadian capital of Ottawa at the time, about to leave for Washington for a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. The meeting was to have been a way for Obama to make up for the humiliation he dealt Netanyahu on his last visit, when he refused to be seen with the Israeli leader in public.Netanyahu announced immediately after the flotilla news broke that he would remain in North America and would meet with Obama as scheduled. However, within minutes after media reported Netanyahu would continue with his trip as scheduled, he abruptly announced a change of plan and set off immediately for Israel to deal with the flotilla crisis.Behind the scenes, it was Obama officials who caused the turnabout. Globes cites sources in both Jerusalem and Washington who say that Obama officials gave a clear message to Netanyahu’s people: Don’t come.

Officials in both Washington and Jerusalem deny that this was the case.Some sources said that it was precisely the high-profile nature of the visit that scared the Americans. The White House did not wish Obama to be seen sharing the stage with the leader of the country that was under international attack for having attacked peace activists.Netanyahu, for his part, was looking forward to explaining to the world from Washington that the violent activists on the boat in question were terror activists with ties to Hamas and Al-Qaeda, who attempted to lynch the minimally-armed soldiers as they rappelled down down their helicopter. ALLENBY BRIDGE, Jordan – Dozens of pro-Palestinian activists detained in the Israeli raid on the Gaza aid flotilla said upon arriving in Jordan Wednesday that they were roughed up and humiliated before Israel deported them.The 124 activists from 12 Muslim nations — most of them without diplomatic ties with Israel — crossed the Allenby Bridge aboard five Jordanian buses. The bridge across the Jordan River, which is under Israeli control, links Jordan with the West Bank.The Israelis roughed up and humiliated all of us — women, men and children, said Kuwaiti lawmaker Walid al-Tabtabai, who was on board one of the ships with other activists from Muslim countries.They were brutal and arrogant, but our message reached every corner of the world that the blockade on Gaza is unfair and should be lifted immediately, he added.

The bearded lawmaker said there was not a single weapon with the passengers aboard all the ships.Algerian Izzeddine Zahrour said Israeli authorities deprived us of food, water and sleep and we weren't allowed to use the toilet.It was an ugly kidnapping and subsequently bad treatment in Israeli jail,he said.They handcuffed us, pushed us around and humiliated us.Mauritanian Mohammed Gholam said Israel wanted us to sign documents saying that we entered Israel illegally.We refused to sign anything and told our captors that we didn't wish to go to Israel, but to Gaza and that their commandos kidnapped us from international waters,he added.An Algerian activist, who only gave her first name as Sabrina, accused Israeli commandos of taking a 1-year-old child hostage.They point a gun to his head in front of his Turkish parents to force the captain of our ship to stop sailing,she said.

Jordanian government spokesman Nabil Al-Sharif said there were 30 Jordanians in the group. Jordan is one of two Arab nations with a signed peace treaty with Israel.The bridge's Jordanian chief, Brig. Mahmoud Abu Jumaa, said Jordan will help repatriate the activists — who also include journalists — to their respective countries in coordination with their governments.Kuwaiti ambassador Sheik Faisal Al Sabah said there were 16 Kuwaitis aboard the buses.They will be flown home aboard a Kuwaiti government-chartered plane later Wednesday, Al Sabah said.He said the other activists came from Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Yemen, Oman and Bahrain.Dozens of other activists remain in Israeli detention, but most are expected to be deported in the coming days.Worldwide condemnation has poured on Israel since its naval commandos halted the aid flotilla in international waters overnight Monday, setting off a melee that left nine activists dead and dozens wounded. JERUSALEM – Israel on Wednesday began deporting the bulk of nearly 700 international activists detained during its deadly raid on an aid flotilla bound for Palestinians in the blockaded, Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.The raid that ended with Israeli soldiers killing nine activists has strained diplomatic ties, sending Israeli relations with Turkey, in particular, to a new low. At least four of the nine killed were Turkish and the ship Israel attacked was Turkish. Israel ordered families of its diplomats out of that country a day after Turkey branded the raid a massacre.Egypt eased its blockade of Gaza after the raid and at the newly opened crossing in the border town of Rafah, about 300 Palestinians entered through Gaza's main gateway to the outside world. A smaller number entered Gaza from Egypt and humanitarian aid also came in including blankets, tents and 13 power generators donated by Russia and Oman.Magdi al-Titer, a 31-year-old Palestinian among those crossing into Egypt, said he lost his right leg during Israel's brief war with Gaza that ended in January 2009.I have come with a medical report to get fitted with an artificial leg in Egypt, he said.

Israel claimed some of the passengers attacked commandos with knives, iron rods, sticks and with two pistols wrested from soldiers.Video released by the Israeli military showed commandos attacked by angry activists with metal rods and firebombs during the raid. One soldier was thrown off one deck onto another below, and Israeli authorities said its troops were attacked by knives, clubs and live fire from the two pistols wrested from soldiers.Israeli defense officials have also said, without providing proof, that night vision goggles, gas masks, flak jackets and thousands of dollars were found on the ship, suggesting the possibility that some mercenaries were on board.Israeli media reported Wednesday that the foreign ministry ordered the families of its diplomats in Turkey to leave that country because of the uproar there over the raid. The diplomatic mission itself would remain in Turkey, said Israel Radio and other stations and newspapers. The ministry would neither confirm nor deny the reports. The fallout also expanded far from the region's borders. Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Nicaragua is suspending — though not severing — diplomatic ties with Israel over the raid. Israelis have little empathy for the plight of Palestinians in Gaza because militants used the territory to send thousands of rockets and mortars crashing into Israel for years. Israel has promised to halt a new attempt by pro-Palestinian groups to sail two more ships to Gaza's shores within the next few days. Oh, it’s just unbelievably obscene how the murderous Israeli commandos dropped onto an innocent ship, Mavi Marmara, only carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid, human rights activists, mothers and doctors, headed for Gaza. This ship just wanted to bring aid to help the 1.5 million people, hovering between life and death and desperate.There is only one teensy weensy problem with the above statement which reflects most of the world right now. IT IS AMAZINGLY UNTRUE, DISTORTED, AND A BOLD LIE. Regardless of that, the Obama, bottle fed media in our country and throughout the largely anti Semitic world, accepts any news that can be manipulated to slam and slander Israel. Who cares if it is vividly untrue and totally taken out of context?

Just the real facts Ma’am

The ship that was attacked by Israeli Navy commandos was part of a Gaza flotilla of armed activists. The world media machine says they were humanitarian, unarmed peace keepers just waiting to give food to the needy. According to the facts, that is BULL ROT! This ship was part of a six-ship flotilla, allegedly carrying aid as their cover. No doubt there were all kinds of military weapons and bombs, as usual trying to sneak their way into Gaza.Israel had already warned Turkey, (a radically controlled Muslim country now) not to try and send ships to the Gaza but they ignored Israel’s clear warnings. Israel knowing the constant effort of getting arms into Palestine, radicals, exercised their need and right to stop the ships. Their goal was to take the 6 ships over and turn them around, not kill anyone.An Israeli spokesman said that some of the commandos were equipped with paintball guns, but they found using non-lethal weapons was not enough when guys on the ship started attacking them with metal sticks and knives, then shooting at them. A defensive fire fight occurred and 19 on the ship were killed, while 7 commandos were hurt.

How is it that the U.S. media, our President and a good chunk of the world media, immediately started throwing out the headlines such as:Israeli Murderous Action Bloody Israeli raid on flotilla sparks crisis and Israeli commandos attack civilians on Turkish ship carrying aid? The bottom line plain for the world to see is that Israel is chronically and constantly under attack by her Muslim neighbors and the anti Semitic flavor of much of the world. Iran, Hamas, Hesbola and other Muslim radical groups continue to scheme, plan and spawn attacks against Israeli citizens. Israel has caught gun and bomb shipments going to the enemy to attack her people for decades. That is a known fact.

Yesterday, ICEJ Canada walked 7 km + with her friends, the Toronto Jewish Community, for the annual Walk With Israel. Our Grafted team was successfully headed up by our Grafted Director Christine Uy [Twinkle], and included several Young Adults from Friends of Jesus Christ Canada, ICEJ reps & prayer members, putting us in the top 20for teams [we ranked 15th]! While we walked with Israel in Toronto, our friend and member Carrie who is volunteering in Israel for 4 months, walked with us for Israel in the streets of Jerusalem, calling us on her cell at regular intervals. Yesterday was an historic moment for the United Jewish Appeal and all of us, when for the first time, an Israel Prime Minister came to launch the Walk, as PM Bibi Netanyahu with wife Sara were in Canada on an official state visit. We must not repeat the mistakes of the past. When Israel left Lebanon, Iran moved in. When Israel left Gaza, Iran moved in.We cannot afford to put a third Iranian terror base on the hills overlooking Tel Aviv. We must ensure that a future Palestinian state is effectively demilitarized. The people of Israel are prepared to make compromises for peace. But Israel will never compromise its security.And I will insist that just as we are being asked to recognize a nation-state for the Palestinian people, the Palestinians will have to recognize Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people.For there to be peace, the Palestinians will have to recognize the Jewish state once and for all. The third challenge for Israel is repelling the escalating attacks on our legitimacy.

In the United Nations or on a college campus, we must fight back against the lies and distortions. We must learn the truth and defend it in every forum.The challenges we face may seem truly daunting. But if anyone here has any doubt about what Israel can achieve, think about what Israel has already achieved. When the State of Israel was established, only 5% of the world’s Jews lived there. Today, nearly half of the world’s Jews live in Israel.Israel began as a poor country with hardly any natural resources. Today, it is a high tech power. A few days ago Israel was accepted as a member of the OECD, the world’s most developed economies.Israeli technology is powering the world’s computers, our scientists are winning Nobel Prizes, and our doctors are curing rare diseases. Our agricultural know-how is irrigating arid lands and our expertise is bringing aid to disaster victims around the globe.Israel has defeated armies bent on its destruction, overcome terrorists that obey no moral code and fight the greatest slanders that have been directed against any people.

Alone among nations, Israel is openly threatened by annihilation. Alone among nations, Israel must constantly defend its very right to exist. But Israel is also a nation that has defied the laws of history. After thousands of years, we restored our sovereignty in our ancient homeland, revived an ancient language, and ingathered exiles from across the globe.We realized the ancient dream of our people to rebuild Jerusalem, the eternal united capital of the Jewish people. Most important, we regained the power of self-defense after being a powerless people subject to every evil under the sun.Those who thought that the establishment of Israel would stop the attacks against the Jewish people were wrong. They did not stop. Not even for a single day.But Israel has given us the power to repel those attacks. There are those who want to strip Israel of that power. Shocking new evidence of a NASA scientist faking a fundamental greenhouse gas equation shames beleaguered space administration in new global warming fraud scandal.

Caught in the heat are NASA’s Dr. Judith Curry and a junk science equation by the space agency’s Dr. Gavin Schmidt creating disarray over a contentious Earth energy graph.The internal row was ignited by the release of a sensational new research paper discrediting calculations crucial to the greenhouse gas theory.

NASA in Internal Spat over Data
Hot on the heels of my recent scoop that the U.S. space agency may have suppressed evidence from the Apollo Moon landings that invalidated the greenhouse gas (GHG) theory, an internecine fury among NASA employees over fudged equations is set to further embarrass the current U.S. Administration’s stand on global warming.Word is getting round that junk equations were threaded into the GHG theory to artificially inflate the heating effect of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by a factor of two.
The spark to this cataclysmic revelation was lit in April 2007 after a public gaffe (see below) by the space administration’s Dr. Gavin Schmidt, who fronts popular pro-global warming website, Real Climate.

Moon Paper Exposes Climate Theory Fraud
What ignited this latest Climategate-linked rumpus is a sensational new research paper, A Greenhouse Effect on the Moon? otherwise called the Moon Paper.Researchers for the paper scientifically proved that since at least 1997 climate scientists knew that guesswork was underpinning the whole greenhouse gas theory. In fact, so flaky are these numbers that they can be rendered to show a GHG effect on Earth’s moon, where no greenhouse gases exist! Thus, skeptics argue, the burning embers of political heat generated by the discredited theory should now finally and unequivocally be extinguished.But more sinisterly, it turns out that NASA climate scientists, with access to better climate equations used for the Apollo Moon mission, forsook those in favor of dodgy Dr. Schmidt’s ‘back of an envelope’ numbers.

With nothing short of religious fervour, government-funded climatologists, in cahoots with the IPCC, trumpeted this flim-flam to political leaders who now claim they can limit global warming to two degrees on the back of green cap and trade energy taxes. Priceless!

Schmidt’s Fake Carbon Accounting
The Moon Paper spectacularly reveals that Apollo mission scientists devised a three-dimensional model for accurately determining Earth’s energy budget far more practicable than the rudimentary flat blackbody numbers of Stefan-Boltzmann. But those numbers contradicted any greenhouse warming effect and have thus been ignored by global warming tax advocates.In addition, it appears Siddons has uncovered intentional fraud, as explained in an earlier of his online publications, The Greenhouse Hustle that reveals the almighty multiplication error of NASA climatologist, Gavin Schmidt.In 2007, Schmidt blogging on Real Climate sought to explain how government climatologists obtain the full surface energy balance equations referred to by Dr. Judith Curry (below).

Schmidt’s Up and Down Scam
Schmidt wrote that he and his colleagues took the Stefan-Boltzmann blackbody numbers and multiplied them by an additional factor of two to devise NASA’s official Earth energy budget. But why multiply by two? Schmidt explains: The factor of two for A (the radiation emitted from the atmosphere) comes in because the atmosphere radiates both up and down.—Gavin Schmidt (Real Climate, April 10, 2007)It is Schmidt’s lunatic up and down elaboration on Stefan-Boltzmann’s numbers that Siddons proves contradicts the laws of physics. Gases do not radiate up and down- their radiation is isotropic, meaning the intensity is equal in all directions-not just up and down as Schmidt describes. Thus multiplying CO2 by a factor of two is at the very least junk science, or worse: criminal fraud.Pointedly, Schmidt soon entered the dark side by appearing to cover up his gaffe. Within a month he snuffed out all debate by closing the comments thread on his heavily censored website.

Stefan-Boltzmann Blackbody Equations
Our junk science back story involves explaining how climate doomsayers misused the long-established Stefan-Boltzmann blackbody equation to invent the greenhouse gas theory of climate. The theory incorporates the two-dimensional flat body numbers to calculate how much of the Sun’s energy enters and leaves the Earth’s atmosphere.But the problem is Stefan-Boltzmann never intended for his numbers to be applied to a three-dimensional rotating planet.Schmidt merely repeated the errors shown in the Kiehl and Trenberth diagram (1997). The Kiehl-Trenberth graphic calls Schmidt’s up and down effect the back-radiation with a heat flux. Thus we may reasonably infer that Schmidt’s shenanigans are inextricably intertwined with those of his fellow warmist climatologists, K. E. Trenberth and J.T. Kiehl who, 13 years ago, first applied the bogus full surface energy balance equations.Yet the idea that the science or the energy budget is settled is blown apart by Trenberth, himself. When asked by his colleague, Tom Wigley, where’s the Global warming? Trenberth admits they can’t answer the question. Trenberth then re-iterated his confusion to the American Meteorological Society in January 2010 when lamenting the current woeful state of climate models.

Schoolboy Errors in NASA’s High School Textbooks
Trenberth’s and Schmidt’s lack of the wherewithal to provide a convincing calculation of Earth’s energy budget is further glaringly exposed by NASA’s Education Department which publishes high school textbooks, Energy Social Studies; Investigating the Climate System: A Balancing Act’ for 9-12th graders.In the publication is a graph that contradicts the Kiehl-Trenberth/Schmidt energy graph but clearly agrees with the numbers applied by climate skeptics and the original Apollo moon mission.I pointed out the confusion to Dr. Judith Curry who responded, Everybody would agree that the simple black body planetary energy balance model is a drastic oversimplification, it is used only for illustrative purposes.

Why Confuse the Public with Oversimplified Data?
But I then put it to Dr. Curry that neither NASA nor the IPCC publish anywhere anything other than the off beam Stefan-Boltzmann equations to illustrate the GHG theory. And why present the public (and presumably policy makers) with such a drastic oversimplification if NASA has tucked away a more accurate and robust equation ready to silence its critics? No response. Yet Dr. Curry did assure me that, Climate models (including very simple ones, not just the global general circulation models) include a full surface energy balance equation to determine surface temperature.But Dr. Curry left me no wiser as to what the full surface energy balance equation actually is. I, along with millions of taxpayers, hope to high heaven it’s not Gavin Schmidt’s snake oil.

NASA Sued in Court by CEI for Hiding Data
In truth, the passing of time is showing that NASA has stooped to break the law to stop anyone seeing what their full surface energy balance equation is-if it exists. We know this because the space agency has defied all such Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) for several years. The ongoing scandal has been dubbed NASA-Gate.CEI is now taking NASA to court for refusing to permit independent auditors the chance to assess the reliability of both government-funded science as well as the validity of current U.S. Administration’s expensive green energy policies.At a minimum, NASA-gate raises serious questions about competency and the integrity of certain government space agency employees.Dr. Curry’s final words: I’m contacting NASA about this.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Brussels, home to the majority of the EU's institutions, has seen its credit rating outlook cut, just as the European Commission prepares to step up regulation of the agencies that have been criticised for their role in the Greek crisis. On Tuesday (1 June), rating agency Standard and Poor's revised its outlook for Brussels to negative from stable, citing the deplorable state of the region's finances.The revision reflects likely changes to the size and timing of region's refinancing package, said the agency's credit analyst Bertrand de Dianous. The recent collapse of the Belgian government means the indebted region is likely to have to wait longer for the country's politicians to agree on a refinancing programme, resulting in a deterioration of its budgetary position in the meantime.

Ironically the move comes just a day before the European Commission is due to strike back in the other direction. On Wednesday, EU commissioner for internal market and financial services Michel Barnier is set to come forward with additional regulatory measures for credit rating agencies (CRAs).The plans are expected to confirm that one of the new European supervisory agencies - legislation for which is currently being negotiated between member states and the European Parliament - will handle the registration and oversight of CRAs in Europe.The aim is to have a more centralised supervision of the powerful agencies, together with tougher rules on transparency, following recent criticism of their role in Greece's debt crisis. Downgrades for Athens, together with a number of other peripheral eurozone administrations, were seen as exacerbating market turmoil in the 16-member area this year. Large institutional investors such as pension funds frequently decide to buy or sell government bonds based on their rating.

Juncker, unemployment

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker - head of the group of euro area finance ministers - went a step further on Tuesday by calling for the creation of a European ratings agency overseen by the European Central Bank.I would wish for a European ratings agency situated close to the European Central Bank, that would be very desirable, Mr Juncker told journalists in Fulda, Germany. My position toward ratings agencies is very critical.The veteran politician said it was illogical that CRAs could downgrade countries due to their rising debt levels, but then complain that government-implemented austerity measures were hampering growth.The ratings debate comes amid the steady flow of bad news for Europe's economy, with fresh unemployment figures on Tuesday showing a record number of European citizens without jobs. Unemployment in the eurozone rose again in April to a fresh all-time high according to data from the EU's statistics office, Eurostat. The number without jobs in the 16 nations that use the euro now totals 15.86 million citizens - equivalent to 10.1 percent of the population. Across the EU27, there are now 23.3 million people unemployed, a rate of 9.7 percent. Spain's jobless level, the highest in the eurozone, has more than doubled since the financial crisis first struck and is now close to 20 percent. Latvia has the EU's highest unemployment rate on 22.5 percent.
At roughly four percent, the Netherlands enjoys the EU's lowest unemployment rate, while Germany is the only country to have seen an improvement in job numbers over the last year.

Ashton eyes reshuffle of EU special representatives

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton is planning to reshuffle her predecessor's team of 11 top diplomats, with the UK's Paddy Ashdown tipped for a new Balkans post.According to the latest thinking, EU Special Representatives (EUSR) appointed to individual countries would be given the chop as the European Commission's foreign embassies are formally converted into EU embassies with more politically-powerful heads of delegation.Meanwhile, a new set of EUSR portfolios with regional powers is likely to be created, with Ms Ashton's office already eyeing a Balkans troubleshooter covering Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia.Given that the new External Action Service will boost the role of heads of delegation, obviously this makes the case for more regional-level special representatives, an EU official told this website.The logic could see the departure of Danish diplomat Torben Brylle, the current special envoy on Sudan; Dutch diplomat Pieter Feith on Kosovo; Irishman Erwan Fouere on Macedonia; Austrian diplomat Valenitn Inzko on Bosnia; and Hungarian diplomat Kalman Mizsei on Moldova.

According to a letter from Ms Ashton's office obtained by Radio Free Europe, Swedish diplomat Peter Semneby, who currently covers Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, would also be asked to go, leaving the three states in the hands of their respective EU embassies.The existing regional-level special envoys cover Central Asia, the Georgia-Russia crisis, the Middle East, the African Union and Africa's Great Lakes region. The recently-appointed special envoy to Afghanistan is also the double-hatted head of the EU mission in Kabul.With Ms Ashton meeting Balkan-area foreign ministers and high-level officials from the 27 EU countries in Sarajevo on Wednesday (2 June) before jetting back to talk to the new government in London on Thursday, speculation is mounting that Britain's Paddy Ashdown is in line for the new Balkans job.Mr Ashdown, who served as the UN's top man in Bosnia between 2002 and 2006, has declined to officially declare his candidacy. But he told UK daily The Guardian on Tuesday that: Since I left the Balkans four years ago, there has been constant speculation about a Balkan envoy ...Obviously I think it's a good idea.The final decision on the 11 special representatives is likely to be made as part of a wider package of around 40 or 50 senior appointments in the EU's new diplomatic corps.EU capitals have already begun quietly negotiating on who will get what in the carve-up. The discussion is expected to gather pace in the early weeks of the Belgian EU presidency starting in July. But UK candidates, such as Mr Ashdown, could be at a disadvantage due to German and French fears that the corps will have too many British-origin officials, such as Ms Ashton herself, in high places.The process of converting the EU commission's foreign delegations into EU embassies has accelerated under the Spanish EU presidency.Out of the 136 commission delegations around the world, 81 are set to have become embassies by the time Spain ends its EU chairmanship, with the rest to follow by the end of the year.

ECB warns of second wave of bank write-downs

The European Central Bank has warned that euro area banks face a further €195 billion in write-downs over this and the coming year, and that contagion from the bloc's sovereign-debt crisis poses a major risk to the financial sector. In its twice-yearly Financial Stability Review, published on Monday (31 May), the Frankfurt-based institution estimates that banks should anticipate further losses this year of around €90 billion, plus a further €105 billion in 2011. This comes on top of the roughly €238 billion in bad debts already written off by the end of 2009.The multitude of challenges facing the region's financial firms include a weakening commercial property market, hundreds of billions of euros in bad loans, economic problems in Eastern Europe, and potential competition between government and bank refinancing needs, says the report. We are experiencing now a second wave of writedowns, which relate to the performance of loans,ECB vice-president Lucas Papademos told reporters while presenting the review.This is not unexpected. Although write-downs on loans will decline, they will continue, simply reflecting the overall performance of the economy.The overall resilience [of the financial sector] has increased, taking into account that capital buffers have been strengthened, he added. But, at the same time, we are aware of the challenges ahead, particularly with respect to public finances.

Despite the measured statements from the outgoing ECB vice-president, analysts are growing increasingly concerned that eurozone government financing problems could lead to a second banking crisis in the region.The recent bail-out agreements for Greece and other struggling eurozone administrations have failed to allay market fears that governments may be unable to deal with their rising debt levels. The concern has led investors to punish European banks, conscious that they collectively hold hundreds of billions of euros of public and private debt in countries such as Greece, Spain and Portugal, with much of it linked to depreciating property markets.

The substantial stress in the sector has led banks to stash near-record amounts of deposits at the ECB instead of lending the funds to other institutions, while risk-wary US banks are reducing their exposure to their eurozone counterparts.

ECB squabbling

Last month's ECB decision to start buying eurozone sovereign debt from banks is among the initiatives aimed at unblocking the trade in government bonds, with the Financial Stability Review disclosing purchases of €35 billion to date. But the internal friction caused by the bank's controversial decision was once-again on view on Monday as governing board members expressed their differing views in public. ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet defended the bank's bond buying scheme, telling a conference in Vienna that it did not undermine the ECB's inflation-fighting policy or independent decision making.We are not printing money, said Mr Trichet, who has been as pains to stress that the additional liquidity created through bond purchases will be withdrawn in other areas. Speaking in neighbouring Germany on the same day however, German central bank governor Axel Weber re-iterated his criticism of the ECB programme.Monetary policy has taken new paths to fight the crisis that I continue to view critically owing to the risks, said Mr Weber, who is seen as a strong contender to become the next ECB chief in late 2011 when Mr Trichet retires.

GUATEMALA CITY (AFP) – Central America was left reeling after the first eastern Pacific tropical storm of the season, Agatha, hammered the region with heavy rains that killed 179 people and washed away thousands of homes.Hardest hit was Guatemala, with 152 people killed, dozens injured and at least 100 people missing after floods and mudslides swept away ramshackle homes along hills and destroyed bridges and roads, complicating rescue efforts.President Alvaro Colom released a photograph of a sinkhole in the capital that had swallowed up an entire three-story building.In countries on the mountainous and mostly poor isthmus linking North and South America, the poorest people often build their homes near rivers so they have access to water.But in in the rainy season their homes are endangered by swollen rivers and mudslides.Tropical Storm Agatha, which dumped heavy rain on the isthmus just ahead of Tuesday's first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, destroyed up to 22,000 homes in Guatemala, forcing 155,000 people from their homes, said officials.

About half of those affected were staying in shelters, officials said.The storm killed 17 people in Honduras and 10 in El Salvador, according to official figures.
With millions of dollars in damage and the impoverished population particularly hard hit, the United States pledged 112,500 dollars and sent a plane carrying relief supplies Tuesday; the European Union pledged 3.6 million dollars in humanitarian aid.

Colom said he would ask Washington to grant Guatemalan migrants in the United States temporary protected status that would allow them to stay and work without fear of deportation because of the conditions in Guatemala.Salvadoran and Hondurans living in the United States already have that special status.It's something we sought a while ago but now the timing is favorable with this natural disaster, said Guatemala's deputy foreign minister Miguel Angel Ibarra.A US airplane carrying four helicopters and supplies was due in Guatemala City from its base in Honduras to help deliver emergency aid to the Guatemalan Air Force, at Colom's request.Guatemala City's response was hampered by a separate emergency: the eruption of nearby Pacaya volcano whose ash has closed the capital's Aurora international airport since last week, when two people were also killed and three went missing. That left thousands of travelers stranded.But Guatemala City's international airport, closed since Thursday, was reopened on Tuesday to commercial and freight flights, said civil aviation spokeswoman Monica Monge.The World Bank said it was finalizing with Guatemala an 85 million dollar loan to help it cope with the two disasters.

GUATEMALA CITY – A cavernous and almost perfectly round sinkhole swallowed an entire intersection in Guatemala City during a tropical storm, spooking people in the neighborhood but exciting geologists.The hole is 66 feet (20 meters) across and plunges nearly 100 feet (30 meters) deep.Geologists said Tuesday that the circular shape suggested a cave formation underneath, but what exactly caused the sinkhole was still a mystery.I can tell you what it's not: It's not a geological fault, and it's not the product of an earthquake, said David Monterroso, a geophysics engineer at the National Disaster Management Agency.That's all we know. We're going to have to descend.The sinkhole formed Saturday and gulped down a clothing factory about three miles (two kilometers) from the site of a similar sinkhole three years ago.

Neighbors said it was a miracle no factory workers died.The boys were lucky, resident Honora Oliva said.They left at six that afternoon, an hour before the earth opened up.Neighbors said a weekend security guard also was spared because he had left to tend to his house, which flooded from heavy rain as Tropical Storm Agatha bore down on Central America. The storm has killed at least 180 people.Some neighbors believe one or two people might have disappeared, but authorities said no deaths had been reported.Crews were waiting for blueprints of the city's drainage system before investigating further.The 2007 sinkhole killed three people and swallowed several homes in the same area. Magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattles Papua New Guinea

CANBERRA, Australia – The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.2 earthquake has rattled the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea.No casualties or damage was immediately reported.The U.S. Geological Survey statement said the quake struck Wednesday evening under the northwest island of New Britain.Simon Allen, senior meteorologist from Australia's National Meteorological and Oceanographic Center, said the quake was too small to trigger a tsunami.
