Rabbis: Flotilla Clash Similar to Gog and Magog Prophecy

The Rabbinical Council of Judea and Samaria issued a statement Thursday in which it said that the results of the incident in which Israel intercepted a flotilla trying to break the naval blockade of Gaza seem like the Biblical description of the beginning of the Gog and Magog process where the world is against us, but which ends with the third and final redemption.The statement explained that while secular Zionism always wants Israel to be beloved by other nations, the legitimacy of our people is not derived from the nations of the world and their poisonous traditions, rather from the Torah of Israel which teaches us that [Israel] is a people that shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations (Numbers 23:9). They emphasized that there is no reason to be alarmed by the world's condemnation as it is a predicted result of fear of Israel's success.The Council blessed the soldiers of the IDF and called for the formation of an emergency unity government that will lead the nation from a position of strength.The Council was formed by Rabbi Zalman Melamed of Beit El and includes leading religious Zionist rabbis who are the spiritual leaders of communities in Judea and Samaria.

Gog and Magog is a reference is to chapters 38 and 39 in the book of Ezekiel, a part of which is read on the intermediate Sabbath of Sukkot (Tabernacles). These chapters describe a vision of a war where the world is united against Israel that will precede the final redemption of Israel and the world. The prophecy's symbolism involves a prince called Gog of Magog, leader of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, who leads a coalition that includes Persia (Iran), Cush, Phut, Gomer, and Beit Togarmah against Israel. There are various opinions regarding the modern identity of these nations. JERUSALEM – Israeli forces seized a Gaza-bound aid vessel swiftly and without meeting resistance on Saturday, preventing it from breaking a naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory days after a similar effort turned bloody.Israel has faced mounting international pressure to lift the blockade since Monday's deadly confrontation aboard a Turkish aid vessel headed for Gaza. But it stood by the embargo — which it says is needed to prevent the Islamic militant group from getting weapons — even as the Obama administration called the current restrictions unsustainable.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the blockade in remarks following the takeover, saying it was meant to keep weapons out of the hands of the Iranian-backed Hamas and he would not allow the establishment of an Iranian port in Gaza.The 1,200-ton Rachel Corrie, which was carrying 11 pro-Palestinian activists, nine crew and hundreds of tons of aid, was intercepted in international waters, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Gaza's shore and was being escorted to the nearby Israeli port of Ashdod, the military said.Military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich said Saturday's takeover took just minutes, and the ship's captain had gathered the passengers in one area of the vessel, presumably to avoid violence. Footage provided by the Israeli military from an aircraft hovering above the Rachel Corrie showed the activists sitting down in the middle of the top deck.

She said commandos clambered onto the boat by sea, instead of descending from helicopters as occurred on Monday when nine activists were killed.Communications to the Rachel Corrie had been cut earlier in the day, so satellite phones weren't operating during the takeover and activists weren't reachable. Israeli warships had tailed the boat since early morning, determined not to let it reach Gaza despite the international outrage over the earlier violence.Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza group that organized the trip, described the takeover as another outrage to add to the nine murdered and denied Israeli claims that troops had been invited aboard. Berlin spoke from the group's office in Cyprus.The Rachel Corrie, whose passenger list included Nobel peace laureate Mairead Corrigan, had hoped to breach a 3-year-old blockade that has plunged Gaza's 1.5 million residents deeper into poverty. But activists on board the Irish boat had insisted they would not resist if Israeli soldiers tried to take over their vessel.The Israeli navy established radio contact with the vessel four times, before boarding it, and urged it to sail to Ashdod instead of Gaza, the military said. This latest attempt to breach the blockade differed significantly from the flotilla the Israeli troops intercepted on Monday, killing eight Turks and a Turkish-American after being set upon by a group of activists. In Turkey, an official autopsy report said a preliminary examination revealed that the nine men were shot a total of 30 times, and five of them were killed by gunshots to the head and their backs. One of the activists was shot to death from close range, it said.The autopsy report will be sent to the prosecutor's office in Istanbul in the next two months as evidence to be used against Israel in a possible court case, the state-run Anatolia news agency said.

Nearly 700 activists had joined that earlier operation, most of them aboard the lead boat from Turkey that was the scene of the violence. That boat, the Mavi Marmara, was sponsored by an Islamic aid group from Turkey, the Foundation for Human Rights and Freedom and Humanitarian Relief. Israel outlawed the group, known by its Turkish acronym IHH, in 2008 because of alleged ties to Hamas. The group is not on the U.S. State Department list of terror organizations, however. By contrast, the Rachel Corrie — loaded with wheelchairs, medical supplies and cement — was carrying just 11 passengers from Ireland and Malaysia, whose effort was mainly sponsored by the Free Gaza movement, a Cyprus-based group that has renounced violence. Palmor said the cargo would be inspected in Ashdod and permitted goods could be transferred to Gaza. Medvedev: Some agreement on Iranian nuke sanctions

MESEBERG, Germany – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday there is agreement over sanctions for Iran but that path is still not the desired one.Medvedev said at a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that agreement on the sanctions exists, several Russian news agencies reported. The state RIA Novosti news agency later reported that Medvedev said that practically agreement exists.But nobody wants sanctions. We hope the voice of the international community will be heard by the Iranian leadership, Medvedev was quoted as saying.Merkel said sanctions could be passed by the United Nations Security Council in the near future.

That is a joint position, she said, praising the council for arriving at a concensus on the issue in its recent work.Russia's president arrived Friday for a two-day visit to eastern Germany to discuss a range of issues with Merkel.Russia has been traditionally opposed to sanctions for Iran, a longtime trade partner, but in recent months officials have shown less patience with Tehran's refusal to clarify its nuclear agenda.The West is against an expansion of nuclear nations and suspects Iran is enriching uranium to build a nuclear warhead. Tehran denies this and insists on its right to a peaceful nuclear power program, but has frustrated the West over its failure to prove it.

BANGKOK (Reuters) – Military-ruled Myanmar is seeking to develop a clandestine nuclear programme with the intent to produce an atomic bomb, according to an investigation by an exiled anti-government group.A five-year investigation by the Norway-based Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) concluded that Myanmar, formerly Burma, was a long way from producing a nuclear weapon but had gone to great lengths to acquire the technology and expertise to do so.If true, it would mark the first Southeast Asian country with nuclear ambitions and alter the strategic landscape of a fast-growing region whose big countries -- from Indonesia to the Philippines and Thailand -- are closely allied with Washington.A report by DVB, made public this week, cited a U.S. nuclear scientist assessing evidence provided by Sai Thein Win, a Burmese defence engineer trained in Russia in missile technology. He said he had defected after working in factories built to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Burma is trying to build pieces of a nuclear programme, specifically a nuclear reactor to make plutonium and a uranium enrichment programme, said co-author Robert Kelley, a former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency.Kelley told Reuters that Myanmar's machinery and equipment appeared to be of a poor quality and that it was a long way from developing a ready-to-use atomic weapon. They have 1,000 things left to do and are doing them one at a time, he said.

Nevertheless the report prompted a U.S. Senator, Jim Webb, to cancel a trip to Myanmar on Thursday, which he said would be unwise and inappropriate in light of the claim.Accounts of suspected nuclear plans surfaced last year, but Myanmar has never confirmed or denied any nuclear ambitions.This new information is the glue that fixes the pieces together, Kelley told Reuters.Sai provided hundreds of colour photos, dozens of technical drawings and a document which helps us see the programme's organisational structure.Previous claims by defectors suggest Myanmar had enlisted the help of nuclear-armed North Korea, with which it reportedly agreed a memorandum of understanding on military cooperation during a visit by a top junta general to Pyongyang last year.Admiral Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific command, said he was unaware of nuclear cooperation between the two states, but was certainly concerned about the relationship between North Korea and Burma given our lack of visibility in both regimes.Sai Thein Win came to neighbouring Thailand and provided photographs and documents of two factories where he used European machining tools to make prototypes for missile and nuclear facilities, the DVB said in its 30-page report.According to the report, the European machinery was sold to the Myanmar government through two companies in Singapore. The equipment did not include all necessary components and precision parts for missiles and nuclear applications.

Aung Naing Oo, a Harvard-educated Burmese academic, said the military might try to emulate the tactics of North Korea and try to arm itself to gain leverage with the international community.It serves a purpose. SINGAPORE – In a clear challenge to China, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Asian nations cannot stand by in the face of North Korea's alleged sinking of a South Korean warship.The attack, which killed 46 South Korean sailors in March, was part of a reckless pattern of aggression by North Korea, Gates charged Saturday.The question people have to contemplate is, what are the consequences for a North Korea of an unprovoked attack on a neighbor? For nothing to happen would be a very bad precedent here in Asia, Gates said, addressing an international security summit.He did not mention China's financial and diplomatic support for North Korea but said the nations of this region share the task of addressing these dangerous provocations.
The United States and South Korea want China to approve a new international condemnation or punishment of the North. South Korea took its case to the U.N. Security Council on Friday. China is one of five veto-holding members of the council.

China is the communist North's closest ally and largest patron, giving it economic and political pull over an otherwise reclusive and antagonistic regime. The United States and South Korea want China to use that clout to rein in the North Koreans.In a tense exchange during the defense conference in Singapore, Gates dismissed suggestions by a Chinese general that Washington was being hypocritical in criticizing North Korea but not Israel for its commando raid on an aid flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea this week.There is a wide gap in the U.S. attitude and policy to the two instances, said Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu of China's National Defense University. He did not endorse the U.S.-backed international finding that the North sunk the warship Cheonan with a torpedo.Gates said the attack on the warship was a surprise operation conducted without any warning.Israel had issued several warnings to the flotilla not to enter its territorial waters, he said.I won't make judgment on responsibility or fault in the Mediterranean incident, Gates said, adding that he favors an international investigation to determine responsibility.But I think there is no comparison whatsoever between what happened in the eastern Mediterranean and what happened to the Cheonan, he said.

He denied that the sinking revealed holes in the security the large U.S. military presence in Asia is supposed to provide for allies such as South Korea.What it demonstrates is that a surprise and unprovoked attack is very difficult to defend against, Gates said.Gates also said, without elaboration, that the U.S. is considering additional options to hold North Korea accountable.A delegate to the International Institute for Strategic Studies gathering asked Gates to explain.You teased us a little, she said.I would prefer just to tease you, Gates replied to laughter. Still, the United States is already beefing up its missile defenses in Asia, and could send additional weaponry or warships to the area. The United States already has already applied trade and other sanctions to North Korea.
