Montserrat volcano shoots plume of ash into sky Mon Oct 5, 2:22 pm ET
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat shot a plume of ash more than two miles (three kilometers) into the sky Monday, lightly dusting the small Caribbean island. The venting by the Soufriere Hills volcano has been accompanied by more than 30 tiny earthquakes since Sunday night, according to Paul Cole, director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. He said it was the volcano's first sign of activity in 10 months. It's just a reminder that the volcano is still active, said James White Jr., acting director of the Disaster Management Coordination Agency. It isn't something for us to panic over.Ash released in several bursts from the volcano passed south of Old Town and Olveston, leaving only a light coating in the island's inhabited areas. But the observatory said more ash could fall depending on the wind direction.Soufriere Hills became active in 1995 and killed 19 people when it erupted two years later, burying much of the British territory and prompting half its 12,000 inhabitants to leave.

Pacific islanders flee as quakes prompt tsunami alert OCT 7,09
PORT VILA (AFP) – Two powerful earthquakes triggered a tsunami alert over a huge swathe of the South Pacific Thursday, sending residents fleeing to higher ground, just days after giant waves killed 177 in the region.Vanuatu, Fiji, Tuvalu and New Caledonia sounded sirens and evacuated coastal areas after a 7.8 quake struck off Vanuatu at 9:03 am (2203 GMT), followed by a 7.1 tremor 10 minutes later, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.We are trying to get those people staying closer to the coast to move inland, said Tuvalu's acting police commissioner Titelu Kauani. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for some 25 regional nations and territories including as far afield as Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, before cancelling it about two and a half hours later. But the warning center cautioned that the tsunami may have wrought damage close to the quake zone and that it was up to local authorities in each country to give the all-clear to residents.
Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated, the center said, without giving any indication of the size of the wave or whether it was capable of causing damage.
It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter, it said. Danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to rapid currents. The alert came just eight days after an 8.0 earthquake hurled giant waves at Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, obliterating entire villages and killing 177 residents and foreign tourists. The new threat saw Fiji evacuate many coastal areas, closing schools and offices, while disaster management officials urged hotels to take tourists to higher ground. In the capital Suva, police and soldiers stopped people from entering the central city area.New Caledonia sounded warning sirens and ordered people away from the coast on the main island and eastern Loyalty Islands.
Some schools have already been evacuated in the Loyalty Islands and sirens are going to sound soon for the population to find shelter and get away from the coast, a New Caledonia civil security spokesman told AFP.Similar action was taken in Tuvalu, whose population of around 12,000 is settled on low-lying coral atolls.Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga were among the countries put on tsunami alert even as they were beginning the slow process of recovering from last week's devastating waves.
Indonesia was also rocked by a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake last week which is feared to have left some 3,000 people dead on Sumatra island.Only minutes before Thursday's Pacific quakes, the Philippines was hit by a strong 6.7 tremor. The countries sit on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of tectonic plates causes frequent seismic activity. This is a very active area -- and it's been very active over the last week-and-a-half,Dale Grant of the USGS told Sky News.
Small tsunami forms in Pacific, warnings canceled By RAY LILLEY, Associated Press Writer – OCT 7,09
WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Three powerful earthquakes rocked the South Pacific near the Vanuatu archipelago Thursday, generating a small tsunami just over a week after another, massive wave killed 178 people in the Samoas and Tonga. There were no immediate reports of damage, and all tsunami warnings and watches for the Pacific were canceled two hours after they were first issued. The warnings caused thousands of residents to flee to higher ground in at least two Pacific islands. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said sea-level readings indicated a tiny tsunami formed after a quake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck 183 miles (294 kilometers) northwest of the Vanuatu island of Santo, and 354 miles (596 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Port Vila, at a depth of 21 miles (35 kilometers).Just 15 minutes later a second quake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit at the same depth but 21 miles (35 kilometers) farther north of Santo and Port Vila. A third of magnitude 7.1 was recorded nearly an hour later, 175 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of Santo at a depth of nine miles (15 kilometers). The Hawaii-based warning center immediately issued a regional tsunami warning for 11 nations and territories and a lower-level tsunami watch as far away as Australia and Hawaii. The center canceled all warnings two hours later.
There were no immediate reports of injury or damage from officials in Vanuatu, a chain of 83 islands. It lies just over 1,400 miles (2,200 kilometers) northeast of Sydney, Australia. We have no damage reports yet, but we have had no contact with Santo so far,Vanuatu police spokesman Take Rakau told The Associated Press. While the quakes were not felt in Port Vila, he said Santo, with its capital of Luganville, most likely could have felt them. The (nation's) National Disaster Management Office has sent out a tsunami warning,he added. In Tuvalu, a low-lying nation of eight coral atolls with about 10,000 people, thousands fled inland, some clustering around the government building in the capital, Funafuti — the only multistory building in the country. We've had a bulletin canceling the warning, and that has been broadcast, weather office head Hilia Vavae told The AP.Even though nothing happened, it was a good exercise for us. We now can react and get to safety. The latest warning comes just 10 days after a quake of magnitude 8.3 rocked the South Pacific near Samoa, sparking tsunami waves that killed at least 178 people and devastated coastal villages in Samoa, American Samoa and in northern Tonga. The alerts Thursday created worry in American Samoa, where at least 32 people were killed and hundreds of homes destroyed in the Sept. 29 tsunami. Residents of the coastal village of Utulei fled to the hills after hearing there was a tsunami watch for the U.S. territory.Schools, government building and other residents were also evacuated to higher ground. Traffic was snarled in downtown villages of Pago Pago and Fagatogo. Also Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a strong earthquake struck south of the Philippines. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 and was located in the Celebes Sea, 175 miles (282 kilometers) southeast of Jolo, Sulu Archipelago, and 730 miles (1,175 kilometers) south of Manila. The quake hit at 5:41 a.m. Thursday local time.USGS did not report any damages or injuries.Associated Press writers Kristen Gelineau in Sydney and Jaymes Song in Honolulu,Hawaii, contributed to this report.

Powerful typhoon slams into Japan OCT 7,09
TOKYO – A powerful typhoon slammed into Japan on Thursday, causing widespread damage and flooding as it swept across the country. One man died and several were reported injured from the storm.Typhoon Melor hit the country's main island early Thursday morning with strong winds. Heavy rains flooded roads and homes, toppled trees and power lines, and heavily damaged some buildings.Hiroshi Kitahara, 54, was killed as he delivered newspapers early in the morning when his motorbike hit a tree felled by the storm in the coastal prefecture of Wakayama, a local police spokesman said. The spokesman would not provide his name, citing department policy.Elsewhere, the storm ripped roofs off of buildings and toppled large trucks on highways as it moved northeast. News broadcasts showed cars submerged by flooding and rivers overflowing their banks. In teeming Tokyo, train operators delayed or canceled service on many lines, stranding commuters across the city during the busy morning rush hour. Over 200 flights at the city's airports were also canceled, according to public broadcaster NHK.The storm weakened slightly as it moved northward, and Thursday morning had winds of about 90 miles per hour, according to Japan's Meteorological Agency. It was due to stay over parts of the country through Friday.

ISAIAH 30:10-15
10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
11 Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
14 And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
16 But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
REVELATION 11:1-2
1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
ISAIAH 2:1-5

2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
MARK 11:9-10,15-17
9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Blair seeks religious leader unity on Jerusalem Wed Oct 7, 11:54 am ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Former British Prime Minister and Middle East envoy Tony Blair called Wednesday for a joint appeal by Jerusalem's religious leaders on keeping the holy city open to all faiths even as tensions flare.Blair, speaking at a forum on religious understanding at Georgetown University, said it was crucial to recognize and address the religious dimension of the Middle East conflict. One of the things we've been trying to organize is a statement by the rabbinate and the Christian leaders and the Muslim leaders about Jerusalem and about Jerusalem being an open city or worship for people of all the Abrahamic faiths,Blair said.Unless we're prepared to recognize that dimension and to act upon it, then I think that we fail in our duty,he said.Blair serves as the envoy for the so-called Quartet on the Middle East peace process -- the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations. He was due later Wednesday to hold talks with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the latest developments in the region, which US special envoy George Mitchell is now visiting.Tensions have run high since Sunday when Israeli authorities closed the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, saying that people were inciting violence.Blair said the Middle East reminded him of Northern Ireland, where a 1998 deal brokered by Mitchell largely ended three decades of strife pitting Catholics against pro-British Protestants and British forces. They say to me,It's not really about religion, you know. It's about politics,Blair said of discussions in the two places.I say, that's fine. Unfortunately, a lot of people involved in the conflict think it's about religion. And so you can't actually separate out the religious dimension from the conflict,he said.
Like it or not, the Temple Mount is key to Israeli-Palestinian peace Wednesday, 07 October 2009 14:26 News from Jerusalem.
Here we go again. As Jews celebrate in their tens of thousands the festival of Booths, Succot, religious extremists like Sheikh Raed Salah incite Palestinian masses to recapture Jerusalem with blood and fire. Not to be outdone, the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah rushed in to pour fuel on the fire as it protests a plan by Jews to perform religious rituals on the Temple Mount, and called on the international community to force Israel to put off its attempts to take over Jerusalem. So as Israel struggles to stop the stone throwers' verbal assaults, and the next spate of resolutions, it's worth reminding the world that ever since the Six Day War in 1967, when Israel captured the Old City of Jerusalem, millions of people have safely streamed to the Western Wall to offer their prayers and insert hand written supplications to the Almighty. While most visitors shedding their tears adjacent to Judaism's holiest site - the Temple Mount - are Jews, not all pilgrims are. Witness Pope John Paul II inserting his own kvittel (written prayer) within the Wall's cracks; pilgrims from Africa, tourists from Indonesia, Swamis from India, Evangelicals from the Americas, Buddhists from across Asia - all come and go to the Wall. The only price of admission: donning a cardboard yarmulke or scarf. Presidents and prime ministers flock to the Western Wall as well, armed with the latest great hope for peace in the Holy Land. From the Oslo Accords to the Quartet Middle East road map for peace, every official, regardless of religious denomination, or lack of one, finds a welcome private moment of silent prayer or reflection at the Western Wall.
AND YET earlier this week, in the midst of the Jewish High Holy Days, French tourists on the Temple Mount were pelted by irate Palestinian worshipers who mistook them for Jews. And the stones, and orchestrated crescendo of violence have continued unabated. During this seemingly annual exercise, has any diplomat, foreign minister, religious icon, or political pundit asked himself, or better yet the Palestinians, one simple question - why? Why can we all pray in peace at the Western Wall, but the very notion of a Jew praying on the site of Solomon's Temple begets only violence, denial and threats? The centrality of Jerusalem to the Jewish people was never lost on friend or foe.Two thousand years ago the Romans, after destroying the Temple, plowed under its remains and banned Jews from returning. Emperor Hadrian tried to bury the very name of City of Peace, renaming Jerusalem, Aelia Capitolina. Later, Christians, for theological reasons, extended that painful ban and it was only conquering Muslim leaders who recognized the right of Jews to return to live in this small area of land.Indeed, the Christian patriarchs unsuccessfully lobbied conquering Caliph Omar in the seventh century, and again when Saladin drove out the Crusaders in the twelfth, to prevent Jews from living in or returning to Jerusalem after the Christians had expelled them from the city. Such efforts by Christians were to be repeated and denied by various Muslim authorities for hundreds of years.
How to explain Muslim attitudes over the centuries? Because the Koran itself recognized Solomon's Temple as a Great place of prayer, and Muslim leaders saw no theological problem with Jews praying adjacent to the Dome of the Rock and the nearby Al Aqsa Mosque. Indeed, in its 1924 guide to Al-Haram Al- Sharif (the Temple Mount) the Supreme Muslim Council wrote It's identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute, adding this quote from the Book of Samuel:This, too, is the spot according to the universal belief on which David built there an altar unto the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. That language would remain until the 1950s.
So why are things so dramatically different in 2009?
Simply put, generations of Palestinians, educated by Yasser Arafat and company, have been taught not believe there ever was a Solomon's Temple. Textbooks and Palestinian media all repeat the self-delusionary canard denying any historic Jewish continuity or legitimacy in the Holy Land. Indeed, president Bill Clinton was reportedly shocked when Arafat called the Western Wall - the Jewish people's holiest place - a Muslim shrine and the Palestinian leader's chief negotiator at the make-or-break Camp David peace talks denied the ruins of Solomon's temple lay beneath the Dome of the Rock.TRAGICALLY, EVER since Israel magnanimously turned over religious control of the Temple Mount to the Muslim Wakf in June 1967, successive generations have been taught that Israelis are Nazi-like invaders, illegitimate neighbors and enemies.
And friends of peace, far from urging Palestinians to deal with reality, help feed the delusion of denial. Witness the World Council of Churches, the largest umbrella group of Protestants, which recently launched the so-called Bern Initiative at its Promised Land conference in Switzerland. Its answer to Israel's alleged apartheid situation in the Holy Land is to reinterpret the Bible by differentiating between biblical history and biblical stories . . . as well to distinguish between the Israel of the Bible and the modern State of Israel. The current violence and rabble rousing by the Palestinians won't make it any easier for US President Barack Obama, but the first thing he must do is not stop illegal nursery and bathroom add-ons in east Jerusalem but admonish the Palestinian leadership to stop denying the legitimacy of the Jewish people.Simply put: There can be no peace in the Holy Land without the Arab and Muslim world acknowledging what their Holy Book and ancestors recognized as the historic link of the Jewish people to its land and its Holy sites. Unless and until that happens, there will be no peace in our time.Marvin Hier is the founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Abraham Cooper is the associate dean of the center.jpost

Confusion reigns over Polish ratification of EU treaty
ANDREW RETTMAN Today OCT 8,09 @ 13:02 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - An official close to Polish President Lech Kaczynski has said he will sign the Lisbon Treaty on Sunday (11 October). But a presidential aide has indicated that the date is not yet fixed. The president is keeping his word. He said several times that if the Irish say Yes in a second referendum, his decision will be positive,Mr Kaczynski's homeland security chief, Aleksander Szczyglo, said on Polish TV on Thursday morning.Mr Kaczynski: will he, won't he? Analysts say he is trying to make his political opponent, Prime Minister Tusk, look weak (Photo: prezydent.pl)The signature of the Ratification Act will take place early on Sunday evening at the Presidential Palace or at his private residence, he added. The move would bring some relief to Brussels, where EU officials are waiting for Warsaw and Prague to ink the treaty so they can get on with filling the senior posts envisaged by the text. The Sunday night fixture was immediately put in doubt by a presidential aide, Pawel Wypych, however, who said on Polish radio within minutes of Mr Szczyglo's TV appearance that:
The president will ratify the treaty in the coming few days. You should listen to what Mr Wypych said. He didn't confirm that anything would happen on Sunday. He just said in the next few days. The president himself has confirmed nothing,a press officer in President Kaczynski's office told EUobserver. The merry-go-round on Mr Kaczynski's intentions began in July last year when he surprised Europe by saying he would not ratify Lisbon unless Ireland said Yes, despite having himself negotiated and signed the treaty in 2007.He later promised to ratify it in a matter of days after the second Irish referendum. But his chief of staff, Wladyslaw Stasiak, again caused surprise on Monday by saying he is in no hurry to wrap up the process.Polish analysts say the president is keen to make his political adversary, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, look even weaker at a time of crisis, with Mr Tusk this week forced to sack a bushel of ministers in a gambling industry corruption affair. He [Mr Kaczynski] is trying to show how powerful he is. By withholding his signature he shows that the government cannot move forward on major issues without his say-so, the head of the Warsaw-based demosEUROPA think-tank, Pawel Swieboda, told this website. It's part of the election campaign,he said, in reference to Poland's upcoming presidential race.Mr Swieboda explained that, in terms of legal theory, the Polish State Tribunal could suspend Mr Kaczynski's mandate on grounds that he has exceeded his competencies by refusing to ratify a treaty which was approved by parliament.Nobody in Warsaw is considering pulling out the big gun for now, he added.A group of Czech social democrat senators in Prague back in June began legal preparations for a similar move against Czech President Vaclav Klaus if he declines to ratify the treaty against all odds.
Brussels in limbo over Klaus treaty delay
HONOR MAHONY 07.10.2009 @ 17:37 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The heads of the EU's three main institutions on Wednesday (7 September) came together to point out to Czech President Vaclav Klaus the costs to Europe if he continues to delay ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, the union's new rulebook.European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek and Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Swedish Prime Minister and the current chair of the EU, said several pending decisions are awaiting clarification from Prague.Chief among the issues hanging in the balance is whether the Swedish presidency will be able to press ahead with a planned summit on EU institutional affairs at the end of the month, where the names for the new president of the European Council, the EU foreign minister and commissioner portfolios are to be agreed.Mr Reinfeldt said it would be wrong to start consultations on these posts without further clarification from Prague, while Mr Buzek said there should be clear information about how costly it is [the delay] for other member states. The uncertainty stems from the fact that the Czech constitutional court is examining a legal challenge to the Lisbon Treaty, lodged by senators close to Mr Klaus. It is unclear how quickly the court will make its decision and, if the decision is positive, how much later Mr Klaus would then sign the treaty, completing ratification.
Time is pressing because the current commission's mandate expires at the end of October, as does the post of the current high representative for foreign affairs, held by Javier Solana. The Swedish presidency is nervous about entering uncharted legal territory. It can either keep the commission as a caretaker, but ineffectual, executive, or try to set up a new commission under the Lisbon Treaty rules. Another option would be to negotiate a new commission with the current rules, but that would mean unwanted negotiations on reducing its size.Sweden has repeatedly said it would rather focus on practical issues such as dealing with soaring unemployment in the Union or tackling climate change instead. For his part, Mr Klaus has remained relatively quiet since Ireland's Yes vote last week. A eurosceptic and a strong opponent of the treaty, he opted not to take a phone call from Stockholm this week and not to meet the Swedish Europe minister, who is travelling to Prague on Thursday.
Other parts of the Czech administration have been more forthcoming, however.
Prime Minister Jan Fischer on Wednesday re-assured his EU colleagues that all the messages he had received indicate there is no reason for Mr Klaus to defer his signature after any court decision to approve the treaty. The stalemate has left some MEPs in Brussels frustrated. Belgian Liberal MEP Guy Verhofstadt urged member states to quickly decide on names for the foreign minister and president posts anyway, otherwise they risk being decided at the last minute behind closed doors.
Parliamentarians also expect that the Czech delay will mean that the new European Commission is not cleared to work until next year.Andrew Duff, UK Liberal MEP, in charge of organising parliament hearings on the prospective commissioners, believes the grillings will take place in December while the EU assembly's vote on the commission as a whole could take place on 20 January.

7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.

ABC News US making arrangements to bomb Iran Wednesday, 07 October 2009 08:23 News from Jerusalem .The Pentagon
The US could be in the process of accelerating arrangements for a possible attack on Iran, according to an ABC News report published Tuesday. The report cited a recent Pentagon decision to push for funding to build a gargantuan bunker-busting bomb called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP),originally planned for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon's 2009 request, which was approved last week, was published by ABC, as well as the previous 2007 request. To explain why the bomb was needed at this juncture, the Pentagon only said, The Department has an Urgent Operational Need (UON) for the capability to strike hard and deeply buried targets in high threat environments. The MOP is the weapon of choice to meet the requirements of the UON. ABC noted that the departments which requested the MOP have responsibility over North Korea and Iran. The report also stated that this weapon would be ideally suited for a strike on Iran's uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, or the recently revealed plant at Qom.US aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor McDonnell Douglas received a $51.9 million contract to build the four MOPs, the report said.jpost
Saudi, Syria agree to remove obstacles to closer ties by Roueida Mabardi – Wed Oct 7, 3:23 pm ET
DAMASCUS (AFP) – Saudi King Abdullah and Syria President Bashar al-Assad agreed on Wednesday to remove the obstacles to closer ties between the two powerhouses long at odds, Syrian state news agency SANA reported. The decision could contribute to helping stabilise Iraq, which borders both countries, and to ending a political stalemate in Lebanon, where Riyadh and Damascus have great influence and have been on opposite sides of the fence.King Abdullah arrived in Syria earlier for a two-day visit, his first since acceding to the throne in 2005.He was welcomed at the airport by Assad. The two men then went into talks, which had been expected to cover such issues as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and whom to back to keep Iraq stable as US troops withdraw. The two leaders underlined their "commitment to pursue coordination and consultations at all levels on matters that interest both peoples, SANA said, and want to remove the obstacles that have hindered their relations. They called for the joining of Arab, Islamic and international efforts to lift the (Israeli) embargo imposed on the Palestinians and put an end to the practices of Israeli occupation forces against the rights of the Palestinian people and sacred sites of Islam.Assad political advisor Bouassaina Shaaban described the summit as constructive, positive and friendly.Hady Amr, of the Brookings Doha Center thinktank, said a trip by the king of Saudi Arabia to Syria is very significant, certainly for inter-Arab relations.
Ties between Damascus and Riyadh deteriorated in the wake of the 2003 invasion of Iraq over Saudi support for the United States.Relations soured further after the assassination in 2005 of ex-Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri.Hariri, who also held Saudi nationality, was close to the monarchy in the oil-rich Gulf state and had extensive business interests in the kingdom. There were widespread suspicions that Syria was behind the killing, something Damascus has consistently denied. The son of the slain premier, himself chosen to form a new government after winning elections in June, has so far failed because of continuing differences with the Syrian- and Iranian-backed opposition, led by Shiite party Hezbollah. But there has been widespread speculation in Lebanon that Abdullah's visit could spell a breakthrough on that front.Riyadh has also been at odds with Damascus over its warm relations with Saudi Arabia's rival Iran and its support for Hezbollah. In that vein, Shaaban noted that the new Saudi-Syrian cooperation would be added to those between Syria and its two friends, Turkey and Iran.In early July, Riyadh named a new ambassador to Syria after leaving the post vacant for a year, and a visit by Abdullah has been in the works since that time, Saudi officials say.The rapprochement comes at the same time as a cautious warming takes place between Damascus and Saudi ally Washington under President Barack Obama. It's not surprising that this meeting is taking place during the Obama administration, said Amr.The US wants to bring Syria more into the fold.Assad and Abdullah have met several times in regional forums since Abdullah became king, although there have been no official visits until now.
Analysts say ties began to improve at an Arab summit in Kuwait in January, when Abdullah pushed hard to gain support from Assad and other Arab leaders for the revival of the Arab Peace Initiative -- a two-country solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- which the Saudis first launched in 2002.Mansour al-Mansour, head of the Centre for Strategic Studies in Riyadh, said: Good relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria will help ease other tensions within the Arab world. An indication that Syria has changed was this year's Lebanese election, he said. They didn't interfere in the election. I think that is a good indicator Syria wants a good relationship with Arabs.
Israeli Muslim leader arrested for incitement and sedition Wednesday, 07 October 2009 06:50 News from Jerusalem .Raed Salah spearheads battle for sole Muslim control of Temple Mount
Raed Salah, head of the Islamic movement of Israeli Arabs, was placed under arrest Tuesday, Oct. 6, on charges of incitement and sedition. A magistrate then released him with an order to stay out of Jerusalem for 30 days. Last week, he and the Palestinian Hamas jointly launched a violent campaign on Temple Mount to support the shrine's exclusion to Jews. Heeding their call to defend al Aqsa, young Muslims have been on a rampage for four days - first on Temple Mount, then through western districts of Jerusalem.Earlier Tuesday, the Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch appealed to the heads of the three faiths which hold Temple Mount sacred to work together and restore sanity to Jerusalem.Palestinian leader Muhammad Dahlan responded by accusing Israel of deliberately fanning the flames which he warned could spread across the Middle East. His fellow Palestinians have been calling on their Muslim brethren to defend the al Aqsa mosque against an Israeli takeover, although police have allowed no Jews or tourists to set foot on Temple Mount during the entire Succoth festival - only Muslims over 50.Monday, large caches of stones and rocks were discovered hidden by Muslim rioters inside al Aqsa mosque and various corners of Temple Mount.Israeli security forces are braced for the Islamic violence to peak Friday, Oct. 9, after the television preacher Yusuf Qardawi, spiritual leader of the international Muslim Brotherhood movement, urged all Muslims to mark that day by defending Al Aqsa against the shrine's takeover by the Jews. His influence is enough to bring inflamed Muslims streaming to Jerusalem in Friday.
Monday saw riots, firebombs, rocks and burning tires spreading through Jerusalem's Arab villages, including Abu Dis, Tzur Bahar and Jebel Mukaber. Many of the rioters were masked, presumably because they have jobs and business ties in West Jerusalem. Yet police patrols were told to stay out of the villages.Shuafat opposite French Hill exploded into violence after an Israeli soldier routinely inspecting a bus was stabbed in the throat by a Palestinian passenger.Attempting to pour oil on troubled waters, the police suppressed information about the extent and gravity of the unrest - in particular, the fires young Palestinians from Tsur Bahar and Jebal Mukaber in south Jerusalem set to neighboring Jewish farm crops and parks. They attacked the firemen putting out the flames which they reignited. Here, too, the police were criticized for staying out of the villages and not arresting the arsonists, although they were identified by neighbors watching the rampage from their windows.DEBKAfile's military sources confirm the impression that internal security minister Aharonovitch and his police chiefs have not grasped the full extent of the security threat to the city and are treating it as a local outbreak that will soon die down if handled discreetly. However, as we disclosed earlier, Syria and Iran are behind the trouble. Israeli Arab and Palestinian Muslim leaders are their willing tools for spearheading a fresh uprising (intifada) against Israel, using the purported Jewish assault on al Aqsa to inflame Muslim masses worldwide.
Mosques in Turkey have responded by orchestrating wild demonstrations. Egypt, Syria and Jordan may follow, not to mention the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Israeli Arab communities.debka
Abbas Cancels Israel War-Crimes Report, Boosting Hamas By ABIGAIL HAUSLOHNER / GAZA CITY – Wed Oct 7, 12:30 am ET
Mahmoud Abbas is not in the business of doing favors for his bitter rivals in Hamas, which is why the Islamists may have been more taken aback than anyone else at the massive political gift presented to them on Oct. 2 by the Palestinian Authority President. At the instruction of Abbas, the Palestinian delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Council withdrew support for moves to pursue war-crimes charges over Israel's January offensive in Gaza, effectively shelving U.N. action on an inquiry led by former international war-crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone that accused both Israel and Hamas of war crimes. So furious has been the reaction of Palestinians across the political spectrum that the move is being widely seen as the final nail in the President's political coffin - with the Palestinians due to hold parliamentary and presidential elections next year, Abbas may no longer be a viable candidate for his Fatah movement.Abbas' move at the U.N. was widely perceived as a response to pressure from the U.S. and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly warned that his government would not negotiate peace if the Goldstone findings were pursued, insisting that they undermined Israel's right to defend itself. Some accounts in the region suggested that Washington had prevailed on Abbas to squelch the U.N. probe; others alleged that Abbas had been blackmailed into doing so by Israelis who threatened to release tapes that purportedly show senior Palestinian Authority figures enthusiastically backing the Israeli operation in Gaza, in the hopes that it would finish Hamas.(Israeli officials dispute that suggestion.) What is clear, however, is that the Goldstone report had been applauded by Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, where more than 1,300 people died during the three-week offensive that also reduced most of the territory's infrastructure to rubble. And most found it unconscionable that their own government should be seen to be protecting Israel from any consequences of Goldstone's findings. (See pictures of Israeli soldiers sweeping into Gaza.) If Hamas had been unsure of how to act on the Goldstone report, Abbas made it easy for them by his Geneva intervention. The decision spurred a flurry of demonstrations in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, drawing furious condemnation from leaders of Hamas and Fatah and demands for an inquiry into how it came about. Hamas legislators convened to discuss the issue in Gaza City, with some of the movement's leaders accusing Abbas of treason. If the Palestinian Legislative Council, which represents the Palestinian people and which is freely elected [and in which Hamas is the ruling party] is against the decision, and if the PLO [Palestine Liberation Organization] executive committee is against the decision, and if the Fatah central committee is against the decision - all political and Islamic factions are against the decision - then who made the decision? Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said during the session. They - the Zionists - made the decision. Supporters of the Zionists made the decision.
On Tuesday Hamas police held a Gaza City press conference demanding the arrest of those responsible for putting the Goldstone report on hold at the U.N. And Syria, which backs Hamas, postponed a planned visit to Damascus by Abbas. Hamas has also warned that the U.N. move presents a serious obstacle to the unity deal that it had been expected to sign with Fatah later this month. Indeed, Palestinian public opinion has turned so sharply against Abbas over this issue that Hamas may be tempted to hold off on reconciling with its rivals while its political position is strengthened by the tide of anger over the Geneva intervention. (See pictures of heartbreak in the Middle East.)This decision revealed the true position of the authorities in Ramallah, which does not represent the Palestinian people but rather the interests of individuals and their foreign agenda,Hamas government spokesman Ayman Taha told TIME.Gaza human-rights organizations, some of which have been highly critical of Hamas' abuses, were among those most vocally denouncing what was widely seen as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause. We worked so hard on [the Goldstone report],says Mahmoud Abu Rahma, communications director for Al Mezan Center for Human Rights in Gaza, who says his organization provided the U.N. fact-finding team with hundreds of documents. We were familiar with attempts by Israel to repress the report and ... we are familiar with the position of the United States, which is more or less in line with Israel ... But [this] came from the Palestinian Authority ... This is not acceptable.
Even before the Goldstone-report fiasco, Hamas was on a roll. It scored fresh popularity points on Oct. 2 by securing the release of 20 Palestinian women from Israeli jails in exchange for a video confirming that Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, captured by Gaza militants in 2006, is alive. The German- and Egyptian-mediated swap stirred up fresh hope on both sides that an exchange of Shalit for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners was close at hand. Prime Minister Haniyeh personally greeted the final prisoner in the swap with flowers, underscoring the political gains to be made on the prisoner-release issue, a primary grievance among Palestinians that Abbas has made little headway on in his years of talking to the Israelis. Before the prisoner release, some in Gaza warned that Hamas' popularity might be waning and that an early election might not be in the Islamists' interests given the deteriorating economic plight of Gazans. But thanks to Abbas' intervention in Geneva, those calculations may have been dramatically changed.

FAITH UNDER FIRE Atheists say prayer makes them physically sick-My stomach did a somersault with disgust October 07, 2009 10:30 pm Eastern By Bob Unruh
2009 WorldNetDaily
Michael Newdow
Atheists recruited to be part of a lawsuit that is trying to rid government ceremonies such as the inauguration of a president of any invocation or other prayer have claimed they are made physically ill by prayer. As I watched the inauguration, my stomach did a somersault with disgust for how much our country was violating the constitution (sic), the most important document in our country, wrote a 15-year-old in testimony being given to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The lawsuit was filed before President Obama's inauguration and subsequently was dismissed at the district court level. Briefs now are being submitted to the appeals court in plaintiffs' hopes the case will be reopened.I felt a temporary state of disconnection when these religious statements and prayers were made during the inauguration, wrote another, according to an appendix of information submitted with the plaintiffs' recent arguments in the case. All the prayers made me feel excluded from the political process and a second-class citizen, wrote another. But, when Chief Justice Roberts asked the president to say, So help me God,I felt threatened and sick to my stomach.Get Nothing Created Everything: The Scientific Impossibility of Atheistic Evolution - (Autographed) (Hardcover)Officials with the Pacific Justice Institute, who are defending the Revs. Rick Warren and Joseph Lowery, who spoke at the inauguration, said in their response that the Constitution simply does not demand that the government be amoral or atheistic.Prayers designed to solemnize public events have a long and venerable history in our nation, said PJI Chief Counsel Kevin Snider, who authored the brief rebutting the claims. The First Amendment cannot be divorced from common sense, added Brad Dacus, president of PJI.While atheists, humanists and freethinkers are a tiny minority in America, they are free to express and practice their lack of faith as they please.
That does not mean,he continued, however, that the vast majority of God-fearing citizens and public officials must be silenced in order to appease them. The complaint originally was filed by a long list of people who describe themselves as atheists, as well as the Freedom from Religion Foundation, the American Humanist Association, Atheists United, Atheists for Human Rights and Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers. The trial court judge speculated that he didn't have the authority to censor speech at the inauguration. And he suggested that perhaps a sitting federal judge did not have the authority to instruct the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and the soon-to-be commander-in-chief what they could and could not say at an inauguration.Eventually the case was dismissed because the inauguration, at which the atheists wanted to prevent any prayer, already had happened. The case named those involved in the inauguration as defendants. The ministers, Warren and Lowery, offered prayers at the inauguration and also are named as defendants. They are being represented in the dispute by PJI.The PJI response noted that Michael Newdow, a California lawyer who has litigated over references to God a number of times, previously challenged inaugural prayers twice, and twice has had his arguments rejected. However, in this case he goes so far as to suggest an ulterior motive in having invocations and benedictions at Washington ceremonies.
Plaintiffs … contend that the real meaning of these declarations goes far beyond that constitutional benignity [of affirming believers views], for they contain an element analogous to the real meaing of the separate but equal laws of our nation's earlier history and tradition, the atheists argue.Specifically, the real meaning is that Atheists are so inferior and so degraded that their religious views warrant no respect, they allege.

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

BORN IN THE USA? Judge sets final calendar for eligibility challenge Ruling suggests there will be a trial, but doesn't confirm it October 07, 2009 6:30 pm Eastern By Bob Unruh 2009 WorldNetDaily
U.S. District Judge David Carter today issued a final schedule of deadlines for progress in the California lawsuit challenging Barack Obama's eligibility to be president, leaving some of the president's critics gleeful over the confirmation of a trial and others wondering exactly what the judge meant.A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office defending Obama said the order was no more than confirmation of what the judge previously had scheduled for the calendar, but it still was conditional on the judge's still-coming ruling on the government's motion to dismiss the entire case. The ruling from Carter cited his hearing on Monday on the government's motion to dismiss, explaining,Argument by counsel. Motion taken under submission. Then the judge continued,On September 8, 2009, the court previously set tentative case management dates. The court now orders those dates be made final. The order listed a motion for summary judgment hearing Dec. 7, 2009 , at 8:30 a.m., with a time frame to file that motion Nov. 16, and opposition required by Nov. 26.
The final pretrial conference is scheduled Jan. 11, 2010, while the jury trial is Jan. 26, 2010.Advocates for the question of Obama's birth and eligibility being evaluated in court jumped on the ruling to conclude that the judge would not have made the dates final if he was going to dismiss the case and the schedule would be moot anyway. The implication of the court's order finalizing the dates is obvious: you do not finalize dates unless there will be a trial, wrote one supporter who contacted WND about the ruling. And there would not be a trial, unless the Motion to Dismiss requested by the Defense was in whole or in part DENIED.Attorney Orly Taitz, who is representing several dozen of the plaintiffs in the case, was optimistic, telling WND it is reasonable to believe that a definitive trial date would preclude a positive response to the government's motion to dismiss.See the movie Obama does not want you to see: Own the DVD that probes this unprecedented presidential eligibility mystery! We're going towards trial. There is no other way to explain it, she told WND.One of her assistants immediately contacted the Department of Justice, asking whether the attorneys are are willing to stipulate that … it is now time for us to begin discovery. We need to start sending out notices of deposition…But Tom Mrozek, a spokesman for the Department of Justice, said the order specifically states the judge is considering the motion to dismiss. With the schedule, the judge appeared to want to just memorialize that there was a hearing. There was no ruling, he told WND. I think for anybody to say there's a trial is way premature. The judge hasn't decided.Another attorney representing a few of the plaintiffs in the case, Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation, said that was how he read the court document.
Multiple calls by WND to the judge's clerk did not generate a response to the question of clarification. But Taitz agreed with the perspective of cautious optimism. He does not say outright that the motion to dismiss, but he says that the dates for trial are final. We might need to ask for the clarification, but from the first glance it looks like a go,she posted on her website. One of the plaintiffs in the case, Rev. Wiley Drake, told WND he has observed the judge's courtroom demeanor over the years, and suggested the Marine is not the type of judge to write vague rulings or orders. As WND reported on Monday, Carter listened to government lawyers argue that the lawsuit over Obama's eligibility should be immediately dismissed but refused to grant their request, saying he would make his decision and announce it later. The lawsuit was brought by several political candidates and party officials, including former U.S. ambassador Alan Keyes and Wiley Drake and Markham Robinson of the American Independent Party. They are suing Obama alleging he is not eligible to be president under the U.S. Constitution's requirement for a natural born citizen in the Oval Office. Forty-six of the plaintiffs are represented by Taitz, who has worked on a multitude of lawsuits over Obama's eligibility, and two – Drake and Robinson – are represented by Kreep.Lawyers representing Obama in the case claim no single federal district court has the power to declare that a sitting president is not fit or qualified to occupy the office, and is, therefore, not a legitimate president. The attorneys have argued the election process and Constitution allow only Congress to examine the credentials of a presidential candidate, and in any event, that opportunity is long gone. They have argued,Plaintiffs simply are not the proper parties to challenge President Obama's qualifications or fitness for office and this court is not the proper forum to decide this issue. The plaintiffs, however, have argued on behalf of their real, tangible injuries from Obama's placement in the White House. If he is not eligible, they have been denied a free and fair election.
They have suggested the simplest resolution is to put Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other government officials under oath and question them about Obama's birth and birth records. They also have indicated plans to ask, if given permission by the court, for copies of Hawaiian records regarding Obama's birth, Washington state records regarding him and his mother, his Harvard Law School records, passport records and a long list of other documents. The plaintiffs have requested immediate access to Obama's records, such as his original long-form birth certificate and his Occidental College records. The plaintiffs' suspicion is that those records would undermine the president's statements that he is a natural born citizen, which could disqualify him. For example, an original birth certificate could indicate it was a delayed filing, which could open the door for a birth location outside the United States.Likewise, the Occidental College records could be significant if Obama attended on a program for foreign students or represented himself as a foreign student at the time.WND has reported on dozens of legal challenges to Obama's status as a natural born citizen. The Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, states,No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President. Some of the lawsuits question whether he was actually born in Hawaii, as he insists. If he was born out of the country, Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. The cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.Complicating the situation is Obama's decision to spend sums exceeding $1 million to avoid releasing an original long-form state birth certificate that would put to rest the questions.
WND also has reported that among the documentation not yet available for Obama includes his kindergarten records, Punahou school records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, scholarly articles from the University of Chicago, passport, medical records, files from his years as an Illinois state senator, his Illinois State Bar Association records, any baptism records and his adoption records.Because of the dearth of information about Obama's eligibility, WND founder Joseph Farah has launched a campaign to raise contributions to post billboards asking a simple question: Where's the birth certificate? Where's The Birth Certificate? billboard at the Mandalay Bay resort on the Las Vegas Strip .The campaign followed a petition that has collected more than 475,000 signatures demanding proof of his eligibility, the availability of yard signs raising the question and the production of permanent, detachable magnetic bumper stickers asking the question. The certification of live birth posted online and widely touted as Obama's birth certificate does not in any way prove he was born in Hawaii, since the same short-form document is easily obtainable for children not born in Hawaii. The true long-form birth certificate – which includes information such as the name of the birth hospital and attending physician – is the only document that can prove Obama was born in Hawaii, but to date he has not permitted its release for public or press scrutiny.Oddly, though congressional hearings were held to determine whether Sen. John McCain was constitutionally eligible to be president as a natural born citizen,no controlling legal authority ever sought to verify Obama's claim to a Hawaiian birth.
Obama picks openly gay lawyer for ambassadorship By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer – OCT 7,09
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday he planned to nominate an openly gay lawyer as the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. If confirmed by the Senate, David Huebner would become the third openly gay ambassador in U.S. history and the first pick by this administration. In a statement released from the White House, Obama said he looked forward to working with Huebner and is confident he will represent the United States well in the Pacific region.Huebner is based in Shanghai, where he handles international arbitration and mediation cases for a U.S. firm. A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, he is also the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's general counsel and previously served on the group's board. He also has chaired the California Law Revision Commission, served as president of the Los Angeles Quality and Productivity Commission and taught at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law.Obama's announcement is a gesture just days before he speaks to a gay rights fundraising dinner on Saturday and gay activists march on Washington on Sunday.Obama's relationship with gay activists has been rocky since his election. Gays and lesbians objected to the invitation of evangelist Rev. Rick Warren's to participate in Obama's inauguration because of Warren's support for repealing gay marriage in California. Obama responded by having Episcopalian Bishop V. Gene Robinson, the denomination's first openly gay bishop, participate at another event. As president, Obama hasn't taken any concrete steps urging Congress to rescind the Clinton-era don't ask, don't tell policy that allows gays and lesbians to serve in the military as long as they don't disclose their sexual orientation or act on it. Some former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have acknowledged the policy is flawed. The office of the current chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, signed off on a journal article that called for lifting the ban, arguing that the military is forcing thousands of military members to live dishonest lives.Obama also pledged during the campaign to work for repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which limits how state, local and federal bodies can recognize partnerships and determine benefits. But lawyers in his administration defended the law in a court brief. White House aides said they were only doing their jobs to back a law that was already on the books.
Officials said Obama's slow and incremental approach to the politically charged issues has produced some gains. The president made commitments on those issues — not just, quite frankly, in a presidential race but ran on some of those commitments in a Senate race,White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. They are commitments that are important to him and he is intent on making progress on those issues and is working with the Pentagon to ensure, at least in don't ask, don't tell, that we make progress on it.Obama has expanded some federal benefits to same-sex partners, but not health benefits or pension guarantees. He has allowed State Department employees to include their same-sex partners in certain embassy programs available to opposite-sex spouses. On Wednesday, Gibbs said the administration was working with the Office of Personnel Management to expand those benefits. But that remains far short of his campaign rhetoric. At its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans,Obama said a 2007 statement on gay issues. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect.
OBAMAS NOT DIVINE,OBAMA IS A COMPLETE LIAR LIKE HIS FATHER SATAN.AND BELIEVE ME OBAMA IS A SATAN PUPPET DECIEVER.
Africa bishops speak of Obama in religious terms By DANIELA PETROFF, Associated Press Writers – Wed Oct 7, 11:00 am ET
VATICAN CITY – African bishops attending a Vatican meeting are speaking about the election of Barack Obama in divine terms — putting them very much at odds with many of their U.S. counterparts.Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra, Ghana said Wednesday that there was a divine plan behind Obama's election. It's like the biblical story repeating itself,he told reporters, citing the Old Testament figure Joseph, who after being sold into slavery in Egypt ends up becoming a top official.
We believe God has his own plans. God directs history,he said of the U.S. election. We pray that it (Obama's presidency) brings blessings for Africa and the whole world.
He acknowledged that Obama has earned the wrath of many conservative American bishops because of his support for abortion rights. Earlier this year, dozens of U.S. bishops denounced the leading U.S. Catholic university, Notre Dame, for giving Obama an honorary degree. We are definitely aware of it,Palmer-Buckle said. But we feel it our duty to meet him and find out what are the things that unite us more than divide us.Earlier this week, the Ghanian prelate leading the three-week meeting on the Church in Africa, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Cape Coast, Ghana, cited Obama's election in saying he didn't see any reason why there couldn't now be a black pope. And the archbishop of Kinshasa, Congo, Monsignor Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, told the formal synod itself that it would be wise to not ignore what he called a primordial event in recent times. If the election of a black as head of the United States of America was a divine sign and a sign from the Holy Spirit for the reconciliation of races and ethnic groups for peaceful relations ... this synod and the universal church would gain from not ignoring this primordial event of contemporary history which is far from being a banal game of political alliances,he said in his speech.
Archbishop John Onaiyekan of Abuja, Nigeria gave more tangible reasons for praise in meeting with reporters.Obama has the authority to talk straight to our bad leaders and tell them they are messing up our countries,he said. Besides, he added, In Africa we are always happy when our brother is big.Associated Press reporter Nicole Winfield contributed to this report.

AP Poll: Third of parents oppose swine flu vaccine By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer – Wed Oct 7, 4:34 pm ET
ATLANTA – As the first wave of swine flu vaccine crosses the country, more than a third of parents don't want their kids vaccinated, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll. Some parents say they are concerned about side effects from the new vaccine — even though nothing serious has turned up in tests so far — while others say swine flu doesn't amount to any greater health threat than seasonal flu.Jackie Shea of Newtown, Conn., the mother of a 5-year-old boy named Emmett, says the vaccine is too new and too untested.I will not be first in line in October to get him vaccinated, she said in an interview last month. We're talking about putting an unknown into him. I can't do that. The AP poll found that 38 percent of parents said they were unlikely to give permission for their kids to be vaccinated at school. The belief that the new vaccine could be risky is one federal health officials have been fighting from the start, and they plan an unprecedented system of monitoring for side effects. They note that swine flu vaccine is made the same way as seasonal flu vaccines that have been used for years. And no scary side effects have turned up in tests on volunteers, including children. On Wednesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius appealed for widespread inoculation against swine flu, vouching unconditionally for the vaccine: We know it's safe and secure. The AP poll, conducted Oct. 1-5, found 72 percent of those surveyed are worried about side effects, although more than half say that wouldn't stop them from getting the vaccine to protect their kids from the new flu.Giving flu shots to schoolchildren is also an idea many parents are still getting used to. It was only last year that the government recommendation kicked in for virtually all children to get it. Seasonal flu vaccination rates for children last year ranged from about 48 percent for toddlers to about 9 percent for teens. It traditionally takes a while for parents to learn about and accept a new vaccine and years for immunization rates to grow, said Dr. Matthew Davis, a University of Michigan Medical School associate professor who has overseen polling on flu issues.
Special swine flu vaccination clinics at schools are being planned in many states. Children are the main spreaders of infectious disease, and if large numbers are coming down with swine flu, there are ripple effects for everyone else. The AP poll found 59 percent are likely to let their kids be vaccinated at school. But the kind of concerns voiced by parents could put a dent in public health efforts.A survey Davis directed for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Michigan suggested one reason for rejecting the vaccine is that about half of parents said they did not consider swine flu any worse than the seasonal bug.Basically, the swine flu is the flu. I'm not overly excited about it,said Julie Uehlein, a Tullahoma, Tenn., mother who is against swine flu vaccinations for her 8-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. My concerns about the vaccine are what are the long-term effects, she added. Some, like Shea, recall the 1976 swine flu immunization campaign that vaccinated 40 million Americans against an epidemic that never materialized. Worse, many who got the shots back then filed injury claims blaming health problems on the vaccine, with some reporting a paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.Health officials did not find evidence the vaccine caused the condition, noting it occurs naturally anyway and would be bound to show up in such a large group. Many people were unjustifiably blaming all sorts of health problems on the vaccine, some health experts believe. That's why the government is already trying to educate people about how common many health problems are, and why it's handing out cards telling people how to report any side effects. For some parents, fears are compounded by worries about thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that will be in roughly 60 percent of the 225 million swine flu doses ordered for Americans. The preservative is not in the FluMist nasal spray, which can be given to healthy kids age 2 and older. But it's in many injectable doses, which are packaged in multi-dose vials that require thimerosal to prevent bacterial contamination.Fears that the preservative or something in vaccines themselves can lead to autism remain entrenched in some quarters — despite no evidence from the most rigorous scientific studies. Some autism advocacy groups echo parents' concerns about swine flu vaccine, and also argue it's a bad idea to spend so much time and money on the new flu.
We're flipping out over swine flu, but it's only affected a few thousand people. Why isn't somebody freaking out about the autism epidemic? said Wendy Fournier, president of the National Autism Association.Vaccine makers are sensitive to demand for preservative-free shots. Parents can ask their doctors to order preservative-free, single-dose vaccine for their kids, said Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. As for his own two school-age children, Frieden said in a recent interview:I would have no hesitation about getting my kids vaccinated by thimerosal-containing vaccines.Health officials and many parents are strong believers in the vaccine, and warn about the potential dangers of a virus that has caused at least 9,000 U.S. hospitalizations and at least 600 deaths, including 60 children.Jennifer Barnes enrolled herself and her two children in one of the government studies of the new vaccine, seizing an opportunity to get them all immunized before the illness became widespread.I thought, This is an opportunity to get the kids vaccinated, and I better jump on it,said Barnes, 32, a speech language pathologist who lives in Decatur, Ga.Barnes said she gets her kids vaccinated against flu each year not only for their own health but to protect others. My kids hang around kids who might have lowered immune systems. I would hate for them to get something and pass it on,she said.Shea said she appreciates those arguments, but she's hesitated to talk about swine flu vaccine with other parents, who seem polarized on the topic. There's the crunchy granola group against flu vaccinations, she said, and the very staunch, follow everything group who extol them.
She also worries that swine flu could become more widespread and dangerous than it is now. If that happens, she said, she would probably try to get her son vaccinated, though she's aware there are risks in waiting, too. It's one of those things where you're almost damned if you do, damned if you don't,she said. The AP-GfK poll was based on a nationally representative sample of 1,003 adults age 18 or older, contacted by telephone on land lines and cell phones. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for all adults, 5.2 percentage points for parents. On the Net:U.S. government swine flu Web site: http://www.flu.gov
CDC: Spray is here; swine flu shots come next week By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer – Tue Oct 6, 4:31 pm ET
ATLANTA – The initial swine flu vaccine doses this week will be the nasal spray version, and arm injections will begin next week to help meet demand, health officials said Tuesday.About 2.2 million doses of nasal spray are available so far. However, the spray is not recommended for some people who are most in danger of complications from flu, including pregnant women and people with asthma. While some priority groups like health care workers and healthy children 2 or older can get vaccinated this week, pregnant women and others at risk should wait. The vaccine first became available in some states on Monday. So far, demand for it is outstripping supply, said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at a Tuesday press conference. He did not say by how much.
Swine flu is widespread across the country, although cases are on the upswing in some areas and seem to be receding in others, Frieden said.According to the latest CDC data, reports are falling a bit in five regions that comprise about half the country — the New York-New Jersey area; the Southeast; the Midwest; the central Plains; and the region that includes Hawaii, California, Nevada and Arizona. However, the unpredictable flu could make a resurgence, Frieden said, noting it's not too late for people in any region to be vaccinated.Even in places where flu has been widespread, it's affected 5 percent to 10 percent of the population. That means 90 percent to 95 percent of the population is still susceptible,he said. The CDC doesn't have an exact count of swine flu deaths and hospitalizations, but existing reports suggest the infection has caused more than 600 deaths and more than 9,000 hospitalizations since the virus was first identified in April. The government keeps a more careful count of deaths of pregnant women and children attributed to swine flu. CDC officials say they are aware of 28 deaths of pregnant women and about 60 of children. On the Net:U.S. government swine flu Web site: http://www.flu.gov
METEORS HIT THE EARTH
REVELATION 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
REVELATION 8:12-13
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
NASA downgrades threat of large asteroid Wed Oct 7, 3:48 pm ETLOS
ANGELES – Earth can breathe a sigh of relief.NASA on Wednesday downgraded the odds of an 885-foot asteroid striking the planet in 2036.Scientists initially believed there was a 1-in-45,000 chance that Apophis could hit the planet on April 13, 2036. But the threat was lowered to a 1-in-250,000 chance after researchers recalculated the asteroid's path.It wasn't anything to worry about before. Now it's even less so,said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.Chesley and his colleagues refined the asteroid's orbit after an astronomer in Hawaii analyzed previously unreleased images that gave scientists a better idea of Apophis' position.Earth got a scare in 2004 when initial measurements suggested the newly discovered Apophis seemed to have a chance of hitting the planet in 2029. Further observations ruled out any possibility of an impact.Scientists are tracking Apophis, which is slated to come within 18,300 miles above Earth's surface in 2029.On the Net:NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/

You can watch NASA give the moon a one-two punch By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer – Wed Oct 7, 3:00 pm ET
WASHINGTON – NASA will throw a one-two punch at the big old moon Friday and the whole world will have ringside seats for the lunar dust-up.NASA will send a used-up spacecraft slamming into the moon's south pole to kick up a massive plume of lunar dirt and then scour it to see if there's any water or ice spraying up. The idea is to confirm the theory that water — a key resource if people are going to go back to the moon — is hidden below the barren moonscape. The crashing spaceship was launched in June along with an orbiter that's now mapping the lunar surface. LCROSS — short for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite and pronounced L-Cross — is on a collision course with the moon, attached to an empty 2.2-ton rocket that helped get the probe off the ground.Thursday evening, about 10 hours before smashing into the moon, LCROSS and its empty rocket will separate. Then comes the first part of the lunar assault. At 7:31 a.m. EDT, the larger empty rocket will crash into a permanently dark crater and kick up a 6.2 mile high spray of debris.Trailing just behind that rocket is the LCROSS satellite itself, beaming back to Earth live pictures of the impact and the debris plume using color cameras. It will scour for ice, fly through the debris cloud and then just four minutes later take the fatal plunge itself, triggering a dust storm one-third the size of the first hit. This is going to be pretty cool,LCROSS project manager Dan Andrews told The Associated Press. We'll be going right down into it. Seeing the moon come up at you is pretty spectacular.
Within an hour, scientists will know whether water was hiding there or not.The mission is a set-the-stage venture dreamed up by the NASA office that has been working on a $100 billion program to eventually return astronauts to the moon. The return-to-the-moon goal is now being re-examined by NASA and the White House. These are not crashes for the faint of heart. The two ships will smash into the moon at 5,600 mph, more than seven times the speed of sound. The explosion will have the force of 1.5 tons of TNT and throw 772,000 pounds of lunar dirt out of the crater. It will create a new crater — inside an old one — about half the size of an Olympic swimming pool, Andrews said. But don't feel bad for the moon. It gets crashes this size about four times a month from space rocks. But the difference is this one is planned and at just the right angle and location to provide interesting science for astronomers. The southern polar region is a prime landing possibility. This crater, called Cabeus, is one where astronomers think there is a good chance of hidden ice that would be freed by the crash, describing the dirt there as fluffy. The crashes will also be a good show for the folks back home, which was always part of NASA's plan for the probe, Andrews said. The crashes will be broadcast live on NASA's Web site. The Hubble Space Telescope and other larger Earth telescopes will be trained at the moon. Observatories and museums are planning viewing parties in at least three countries. And amateur astronomy buffs with telescopes who live west of the Mississippi may try to catch a glimpse of it through their own instruments because it will still be dark outside. People who live in areas where it will be daylight won't be able to see it from home telescopes.A lot of telescopes will be tuning in, said Terry Mann, president of the Astronomical League, an umbrella group for local amateur astronomy societies. You might see something you might not ever see again.
Amateurs need at least a 10-inch telescope to look at the crashes and what they see will only be a small part of their overall view in the scope. And they won't see the impact itself, but the spray of debris flying up.This is all happening during a peak week in a yearlong celebrations commemorating the 400th anniversary of Galileo using a telescope to see Jupiter's moons. On Wednesday evening, the White House planned a star party for middle schoolers and about two dozen telescopes. In Boulder, Colo., the Fiske Planetarium on Friday will serve free bagels and coffee to early rising moon crash spectators. The planetarium plans to stream a live video feed from NASA, train its own 24-inch telescope to watch the crash, and let people look for themselves through two research-grade telescopes.People like explosions one way or another, said Matt Benjamin, the planetarium's education programs manager. And a celestial explosion is going to excite them.Science Writer Alicia Chang in Los Angeles contributed to this report. Sharp debate at high court over cross on US land By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer – OCT 7,09
WASHINGTON – As the Supreme Court weighed a dispute over a religious symbol on public land Wednesday, Justice Antonin Scalia was having difficulty understanding how some people might feel excluded by a cross that was put up as a memorial to soldiers killed in World War I.It's erected as a war memorial. I assume it is erected in honor of all of the war dead,Scalia said of the cross that the Veterans of Foreign Wars built 75 years ago atop an outcropping in the Mojave National Preserve. What would you have them erect?...Some conglomerate of a cross, a Star of David, and you know, a Muslim half moon and star? Peter Eliasberg, the American Civil Liberties Union lawyer arguing the case, explained that the cross is the predominant symbol of Christianity and commonly used at Christian grave sites, not that the devoutly Catholic Scalia needed to be told that.I have been in Jewish cemeteries,Eliasberg continued. There is never a cross on a tombstone of a Jew.
There was mild laughter in the packed courtroom, but not from Scalia.
I don't think you can leap from that to the conclusion that the only war dead that that cross honors are the Christian war dead. I think that's an outrageous conclusion,Scalia said, clearly irritated by the exchange. The court is considering whether the cross' presence on the land violates the Constitution, despite Congress' decision to transfer the land on which the cross sits to private ownership.Scalia made plain his view of the case, strongly suggesting that he sees no problem with the cross at all. By contrast, lower federal courts did find a constitutional violation and were not persuaded that the land transfer fixed the problem. The cross has been covered with plywood for the past several years following the court rulings. Court papers describe the cross as being 5 feet to 8 feet tall.Although Scalia's take on the dispute seemed clear, the case appeared to diminish in importance as the hourlong argument continued.Rather than serve as a statement about the separation of church and state or even how people get past the courthouse door to challenge religious symbols on government land, the case could end up focused narrowly on the land transfer.
Even on that issue, the court appeared divided between conservatives and liberals.
Several conservative justices seemed open to the Obama administration's argument that Congress' decision to transfer to private ownership the land on which the cross sits ends any government endorsement of the cross and takes care of the constitutional questions.Isn't that a sensible interpretation of a court order prohibiting the cross' display on government property? Justice Samuel Alito asked.
The liberal justices, on the other hand, indicated that they agree with a federal appeals court that ruled that the land transfer was a sort of end-run around the First Amendment prohibition against government endorsement of religion.Justice Anthony Kennedy, often the decisive vote in these cases, said nothing to tip his hand.Veterans groups are on both sides of the case, with some worrying that other religious symbols that serve as war memorials could be threatened by a ruling against the Mojave cross.Eliasberg, who represents the former National Park Service employee who sued over the cross, said their fears are misplaced. He said two prominent symbols in Arlington National Cemetery, the Argonne Cross Memorial and Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, are different.Context matters, Eliasberg said, noting that the Veterans Administration offers a choice of 39 different emblems and beliefs on tombstones at Arlington.Jewish and Muslim veterans, by contrast, object that the Mojave cross honors Christian veterans and excludes others.Whatever the court decides, it seems unlikely that the Mojave cross — where Easter Sunrise services have been held for decades — would have to come down.Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg indicated, and Eliasberg agreed, that even if the court finds problems with what Congress did, lawmakers probably could find a valid way to sell or give the land to veterans groups.A decision is expected by spring. The case is Salazar v. Buono, 08-472.On the Net:The Supreme Court: http://www.supremecourtus.gov
Tory eurosceptics pose headache for EU: experts by Alice Ritchie – OCT 7,09
MANCHESTER, England (AFP) – Eurosceptics in the Conservative party could cause a major headache for the European Union if, as many expect, they take power at the next election, analysts have warned.Polls put David Cameron's party on course to oust Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour government in an election to be held by next June, but the Tories' opposition to the EU's Lisbon Treaty is causing concern in Brussels.I clearly see a potential for crisis with Europe, said Wyn Grant, professor of politics at Warwick University. The eurosceptics are very strong in the Conservative party, especially among the people likely to be in the next government.
William Hague, who is expected to be the next foreign secretary, is firmly in the eurosceptic camp, he told AFP, while Cameron himself is under a lot of pressure to respond to eurosceptics in his party. In a speech Thursday to his party's conference in Manchester, Cameron was expected to reaffirm his commitment to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty if it has not been ratified by all 27 EU member states and he is elected. This is despite expectations that the treaty will pass into law by the end of the year. Of the two countries that must still ratify it, Poland is likely to sign within days and the Czech Republic expects to do so by year-end.Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, gave Cameron a friendly warning over the Lisbon Treaty in comments published Thursday. He told the Times he saw him as a friend and wanted him to lead Britain but added: Once he becomes prime minister, he will need friends in Europe to achieve the things he wants to see..If everything goes to plan, hopefully we will have everything in place (over Lisbon) for New Year's Eve -- well before any British elections.
The Conservatives have said that if the treaty is already ratified,we would not let matters rest there, though have not elaborated on what precisely this would mean, prompting a flurry of speculation from leading figures.London Mayor Boris Johnson has suggested a referendum on individual elements of the treaty, while senior Tory MP David Davis said a separate vote on Britain's ties with Europe could be on the cards.Daniel Hannan, a eurosceptic Conservative member of the European Parliament, said he expects some kind of action regardless of treaty's status, saying the priority would be a unilateral repatriation of power from Brussels to London.Hannan is on the right-wing of the Conservatives and does not speak for the party's leadership, but reports suggest he was instrumental in getting them to pull out of the main centre-right grouping in the European Parliament. While Hannan would like to see Britain leave Europe altogether, Cameron has made clear this is not an option, but wants Britain to take back powers over social and employment issues.A British Conservative cabinet would hugely complicate the government of Europe, said Charles Grant, director of pro-European think tank the Centre for European Reform. You'll have a government that will probably try to unpick part of the Lisbon Treaty, maybe withhold budget payments, block accession (of new EU member states), who knows? They'll just create problems.Grant told AFP that Cameron would likely soften his eurosceptic stance if he takes power, but warned this could take some time, saying his first few years in office could be very disruptive.
Senior Conservatives reject the idea that tensions over their policy and their withdrawal from the European People's Party to form a new anti-federalist bloc in the European Parliament have damaged relations with EU leaders.Junior foreign affairs spokesman David Lidington said Cameron had met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on numerous occasions and a close working relationship will develop. He added:The reality is that if there is a Conservative government at Westminster, then the governments of the other European countries will know that they have to deal with us, and will want to deal with us.

1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

Oil rises above $70 in Asia as US dollar weakens By ALEX KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer – OCT 8,09
SINGAPORE – Oil prices rose above $70 a barrel Thursday in Asia amid a weakening U.S. dollar and mixed crude inventory data.Benchmark crude for November delivery was up 62 cents at $70.19 by midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract lost $1.31 to settle at $69.57 on Wednesday.A slide in the U.S. dollar has helped bolster oil prices, which are traded in the American currency. The euro rose to $1.4758 on Thursday from $1.4687 the previous day, and the dollar slipped to 88.30 yen from 88.60.Investors were also mulling mixed signals in Wednesday's crude supply numbers from the Energy Information Administration. Gasoline inventories grew by 2.9 million barrels last week and distillate fuel supplies grew by 700,000 barrels, both bigger increases than analysts expected. But crude supplies dropped by 1 million barrels, while analysts had expected a gain of 1.9 million barrels.Barclays Capital expects global crude consumption to fall 1.55 million barrels a day this year, less than it previously forecast, as the U.S. and Japan begin to show signs of higher demand. However, next year's demand growth could be muted. We remain somewhat downbeat on the scale of oil demand growth in 2010,Barclays said in a report. In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 2.01 cents to $1.80 a gallon. Gasoline for November delivery gained 1.24 cents to $1.73 a gallon. Natural gas for November delivery jumped 2.7 cents to $4.93 per 1,000 cubic feet.In London, Brent crude rose 69 cents to $67.89 on the ICE Futures exchange.
Stocks end mixed after rally as earnings loom By SARA LEPRO and TIM PARADIS, AP Business Writers – Wed Oct 7, 5:55 pm ET
NEW YORK – After two big days, it was time for the stock market to take a break.
Investors waiting for corporate earnings reports to start rolling in made only modest moves Wednesday after stocks posted their best two-day gain since mid-July. The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 6 points, while broader indexes edged higher. With little economic news to direct trading, investors were waiting for earnings reports from the July-September quarter for signals about the economy.
Aluminum maker Alcoa Inc. was the first of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones industrials to release its numbers, but the report didn't arrive until after the closing bell. Still, investors were happy with the news that the company was profitable again after three losing quarters, and that revenue and earnings topped expectations. Alcoa stock rose in extended-hours trading.Investors spent Wednesday not wanting to place big bets amid concerns that revenue and earnings won't justify the enormous gains in stocks in the past seven months. The Standard & Poor's index, the basis for many mutual funds, is up 56.3 percent since hitting a 12-year low in March.Investors are holding tight here, said Eric Ross, director of research at Canaccord Adams. There are people on both sides of the fence. A lot of people think this market is going to keep running and running and then others that are very nervous. The Dow fell 5.67, or 0.1 percent, to 9,725.58. The S&P 500 index rose 2.86, or 0.3 percent, to 1,057.58, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 6.76, or 0.3 percent, to 2,110.33.A falling dollar and rising commodity prices helped push stocks higher on Tuesday, adding to the previous day's gains that were spurred by signs of growth in the service industry. The Dow rose 244 points in two days, its best back-to-back advance since July 15-16.Even with the recent gains, stocks are still down during the past two weeks as labor and manufacturing reports have fallen short of expectations. Analysts expect the earnings reports and forecasts that arrive in the coming weeks to have a big influence on the market's direction through the end of the year. Many companies beat modest earnings expectations in the second quarter by cutting costs. That helped fuel the market's rally through the summer. Now, investors are hoping to see stronger sales driving earnings, which would signal some steadying in consumer spending. Many analysts remain skeptical. The consumer is just really damaged, said Len Blum, a managing partner at Westwood Capital LLC.Every time we see a blip, it's not sustainable.Alcoa's shares rose 31 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $14.20 before the company reported results, and it climbed to $15 in after-hours trading.
In other trading, shares of Verisk Analytics Inc. shot up 23.7 percent in their market debut, rising $5.22 to $27.22. The insurance data specialist raised $1.9 billion in one of the year's largest initial public offerings.Gold ended higher after hitting a new high of $1,049.70 an ounce. Prices rose $4.70 to $1,044.40.Oil fell $1.31 to settle at $69.57 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Investors have been tracking the dollar, which has fallen this year amid rock-bottom interest rates and massive government spending. A weak dollar is good for profits of companies with a strong global operations because it encourages overseas customers to buy U.S. goods and services. Over the long term, however, it could trigger inflation.Bond prices rose after an auction of 10-year notes drew strong demand. That pushed down the yield on the 10-year Treasury note to 3.19 percent from 3.26 percent late Tuesday.Advancing stocks narrowly outpaced those that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 4.3 billion shares compared with 5.1 billion Tuesday. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 0.10, or less than 0.1 percent, to 602.08.Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.6 percent, Germany's DAX index slipped 0.3 percent, and France's CAC-40 lost 0.4 percent. Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 1.1 percent.
EU and US cities jointly commit to reducing carbon emissions
VALENTINA POP 07.10.2009 @ 17:38 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – Mayors from both sides of the Atlantic on Wednesday pledged to work together to reduce carbon emissions and to aje their voice heard at the upcoming UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen.US mayors stand solidly with mayors across the globe who believe that climate disruption is an urgent threat to the environmental and economic health of our communities,Elisabeth B. Kautz, vice-president of the US conference of mayors said in Brussels during the Open Days, a marathon of events dedicated to regions and cities.Ms Kautz's organisation is the US counterpart to the assembly of over 700 European local authorities that have signed the so-called Covenant of Mayors that aims to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent by 2020. Although our national government did not sign the Kyoto Protocol, almost 1,000 US mayors have subsequently signed the US Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to meet or beat Kyoto Protocol targets,Ms Kautz explained. She was one of the regional and local representatives placing her signature on a three-metre inflatable globe which will be sent to Copenhagen as a reminder of the need to involve local and regional levels in the climate change negotiations, since they will be the ones actually implementing many of the measures on the ground.Among the co-operation forms envisaged are green expert exchange programmes that would allow cities in the US and Europe to share best practices and raise awareness among citizens of the need to do save energy and reduce emissions.Luc van den Brande, head of the Committee of Regions (CoR), a consultative body of EU regional and local representatives said he was delighted that officials from both sides of the Atlantic pledged to co-operate more on the climate front. The CoR will also represent Europe's regions and cities within the official EU delegation led by the Swedish presidency. As for EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs, one of the fathers of the Covenant of mayors, which is supervised by the EU executive, he was very proud of the American-European tandem at local levels. If the battle against climate change is to be won, it will have to be fought in the cities,he said.I am convinced that the administration that is closest to the citizen, the municipalities, will play a major role in mobilising efforts to reach an ambitious agreement in Copenhagen .
His comments were echoed by local officials speaking in the CoR plenary session. The deputy mayor of the Danish capital, Mona Heiber, highlighted the need for local authorities to play their part in solving climate change issues. Ms Heiber noted that Copenhagen was striving to become a carbon neutral city by 2025.We are facing a window of opportunity to create a path towards a sustainable green economy. We believe that the communities of the future are based on smart economic growth, she said.Henning Jensen, mayor of Naestved, a city on the Danish island of Zealand, said that climate change could only be tackled via a multi-level governance approach.
Although climate change is a global issue, the consequences are always local: flooded basements, fewer tourists or poor harvests caused by drought and extreme temperatures. Sub-national authorities can contribute to the fight against climate change by bringing their hands-on knowledge of the everyday challenges, and their solutions to them,he argued.A German representative of Hohenlohe, a district in the south-western region of Baden Wurttemberg stressed the importance of beefing up civil protection capacities at a local level. The effects of climate change can often be disastrous, and in many cases, it is the local and regional authorities that are directly responsible for tackling them, for instance forest fires or floods, or to bear the economic and social consequences. That is why it is so important to ensure that all those involved on the front line are as well-prepared and as quick to respond as possible,he said.
British bank mulls huge rights issue: report OCT 7,09
LONDON (AFP) – Part-nationalised Lloyds Banking Group is considering a 15 billion pound (16 billion euro, 24 billion dollar) rights issue, according to a Financial Times (FT) report. The Financial Services Authority watchdog is currently scrutinising the plan, under which Lloyds could also sell assets and shrink its balance sheet, the paper said, quoting unnamed people close to the deal.If it goes ahead, the move -- which the FT said was supported by the government, owner of a 43.5percent stake in Lloyds -- would be the biggest ever rights issue in Britain.Last month, Lloyds said it was considering alternatives to the Government Asset Protection Scheme (GAPS), which provides guarantees for risky assets, following stress tests. In response to the report, Lloyds Banking Group told the FT that it had nothing to add to that statement.
Amid the global economic crisis, China rises By Joe Mcdonald, Ap Business Writer – OCT 8,09
BEIJING – The auto-parts maker Delphi Corp. is headquartered in Troy, Mich., in the heart of the region that made the United States the car capital of the world. It's a place where the phrase buy American is right at home. Now the 3,000 employees of Delphi's brake and suspension unit are getting a new boss. Battered by weak sales, Delphi is selling the unit to investors led by a company named Shougang Corp.
Shougang is a steel maker owned by the government of China — a government that calls itself communist but espouses a socialist market economy as it marches down globalization's road toward a capitalistic future.Everyone's so desperate for cash that the Chinese show up with a checkbook and people say, Yes, please, says Arthur Kroeber, managing director of Dragonomics, a Beijing research firm.Explosive growth in China and India, coupled with Japan's clout as the world's No. 2 economy, has long been expected to shift economic power from the United States to Asia as this century progresses. The financial crisis and resulting Great Recession are accelerating that process.China certainly comes out of the crisis stronger rather than weaker, and it's the opposite for the United States, says Stephen Roach, chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia. Some Americans have begun declaring this the Chinese century since it began nearly a decade ago. But while they and others fear the rise of China in international relations and the global economy, the reality is less dramatic: Beijing is still getting its own sprawling, chaotic house in order and is in no position to supplant the United States as global leader in the near future.
At the same time, Beijing's power remains undefined: On an unfamiliar global stage, it is unsure what role it wants to play. For decades, China followed the dictum of its late supreme leader, Deng Xiaoping, to keep its head down abroad and focus on development at home. But earlier this decade, emboldened by success and mindful that their globalized economy needs stability, communist leaders started pressing for a place among the nations that manage world affairs. These days, Beijing is claiming a bigger voice in global economic forums such as the Group of 20 and is getting more deference in the United Nations, which could mean protection for friends such as Iran and Myanmar. Its military spending is the world's second-highest, behind that of the United States.China is very likely to be the second-most-powerful country — if it isn't now, then within a decade, says Kenneth Lieberthal, director of the Brookings Institution's John L. Thornton China Center in Washington. For the United States, it's a mixed blessing. The American and Chinese economies are intertwined, and the success of one depends on the health of the other. The United States is China's biggest trade partner. Americans bought Chinese goods worth $338 billion last year. Beijing is Washington's biggest creditor, with more than $800 billion invested in government debt. American automakers look to China's growing market to propel future sales. The financial crisis set back U.S. growth by years and will add trillions to the federal debt over the next decade. But China avoided the worst of the crisis. Its banks are healthy and, with the help of a 4 trillion yuan ($586 billion) stimulus, this year's economic growth is on track to top 8 percent.Already, demand from China can affect oil prices, and it is starting to influence what products are available worldwide. Western jobs are tied to Chinese spending, from British auto factories to Australian iron mines. Chinese money is financing development of oil fields from Venezuela to Central Asia. And China's role as Washington's lender-in-chief is altering the dynamic of the countries' relationship.
At a meeting in London in April, President Barack Obama assured his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, that Washington would cut its budget deficit — a promise no American leader ever had to make to a Soviet leader.Washington's three-year-old strategic dialogue with Beijing has long been dominated by U.S. trade grievances. But the latest round in July, overshadowed by America's need for China to keep buying its debt, became a discussion between equals.China, a major destination for foreign investment, was starting to reverse the flow and invest abroad before the financial crisis. The crisis accelerated that and has led to a flurry of deals. In some cases, Chinese companies have stepped in to save Western jobs — a notion unthinkable a decade ago.In Britain, China's Nanjing Automobile Group plans to reopen the Longbridge factory idled by the collapse of MG Rover to make limited-edition MGTF sports cars. And in Sweden, Beijing Automotive is joining a bid to buy Saab from General Motors, while Geely Automobile wants to acquire Ford's Volvo unit.
It's better to be part of the race than to watch it from the stands, says Paul Akerlund, a union representative at Saab.We see advantages in gaining access to the Chinese market, which is the fastest-growing auto market in the world. In diplomacy, China is only starting to stake out positions on a wide array of global issues. It has used its influence in the United Nations to help allies such as Sri Lanka resist Western pressure on human rights. But Chinese leaders have yet to decide what overall political and military role they want abroad. They clearly want to be a country of some gravitas both regionally and globally,Lieberthal says. But there are a lot of aspects of the American approach — too ready to interfere, to tell others what to do — that the Chinese criticize as hegemonic.Even as it is on track to overtake the American economy in size as early as 2030, China is burdened by enormous problems of corruption, poverty and pollution. Measured by income per person, China ranked 130th out of 210 economies in a World Bank survey last year, behind most of Latin America and parts of Africa.China's foreign currency reserves are huge. But that does not mean we are a rich country, says Cho Tak Wong, chairman of Fuyao Group, which produces glass for Chinese and global automakers. We are about 100 years behind the United States.
China also has become a fast-growing market, and the financial crisis has only increased its importance to global companies. Chinese demand affects everything from global steel prices to the design of consumer goods. Cadillac created its 2008 CTS with China in mind, adding a deeper back seat for Chinese buyers driven by chauffeurs.Other countries' urgent need for cash has created opportunities for Beijing to make deals for resources to drive its booming economy. State companies have struck oil deals in Brazil, Venezuela, Russia and Africa and bought stakes in Australian and Canadian miners.Delphi turned to Chinese buyers for its remaining brake and suspension operations after it sought bankruptcy court protection four years ago. The buyers are Shougang and two partners — the Beijing city government and an auto-parts maker, Tempo Group. Delphi says the $90 million sale should close in November, seven months after it was announced.Contrast that with 2005, when Chinese oil company CNOOC Ltd. tried to acquired Unocal Corp. CNOOC offered to pay more than a rival American bidder but withdrew after critics in Washington said the sale might threaten U.S. energy security.Still, the United States has many strengths that China lacks. The U.S. remains the world center for innovation in many areas and a magnet for smart, ambitious immigrants.Europeans may hope that the U.S. has been knocked down a peg or two, but even if that is so, they could be in for a nasty surprise, says Howard Wheeldon, senior strategist at BGC Partners, a London brokerage.Never underestimate the ability of the American people to rise to a challenge.AP writers Robert Barr in London and Karl Ritter in Stockholm contributed to this report.(jrm)
Canada to stop insurance sales on bank websites By Andrea Hopkins and Pav Jordan - Wed Oct 7, 7:46 pm ET
TORONTO (Reuters) – Canada will prohibit major banks from marketing insurance products on their websites, marking a major victory for big insurers in a long-running battle with the banking industry.Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told Canada's Business News Network (BNN) that rule changes will come in with the next budget implementation bill in early 2010, effectively reversing a decision in favor of the banks earlier this year from Canada's financial regulator.I've made it clear now that we will change the rules so that the marketing of insurance via web sites, virtual bank branches, will not be permitted,Flaherty said. While Canada's Bank Act prohibits banks selling insurance through branches -- the subject of a decades-long political battle with insurance brokers -- big banks have slowly expanded into the C$115 billion ($108 billion) domestic insurance market in a bid to increase earnings and market share.Hungry for growth, the top banks have beefed up insurance arms, pushing sales on the Internet, in stand-alone insurance branches or through insurance subsidiaries, carefully skirting government regulations meant to keep insurance and banking separate. As recently as June, bankers celebrated a ruling by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), saying banks could promote insurance on their websites. We are completely shocked that Mr. Flaherty would want to limit how and where consumers can access information about insurance, the Canadian Bankers Association said in a statement after Flaherty announced the rule changes.
All of Canada's major banks -- Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce -- offer some variety of insurance and several are aggressively trying to grow the business. All of the banks declined independent comment about Flaherty's decision, communicated to the banks in a letter from the minister.Today I wrote to the banks telling them that in my view this was not consistent with the government policy, which is that insurance activities are not generally to be carried on in bank branches, and that we would extend that policy intent to websites as well,Flaherty told reporters ahead of the BNN interview.I asked the banks to quickly stop the practice, so that they would be compliant with the government's policy intent. The Bank Act prohibits banks from directly selling insurance in branches, but the OSFI ruled in June that a bank website is not a bank branch and therefore a bank could promote insurance products on its website.Flaherty said he disagreed with the ruling, seen at the time as a blow to the thousands of insurance brokers across Canada who are considered well-connected with federal legislators in Ottawa. The background to this is that the Superintendent of Financial Institutions made a ruling that according to the present law, the use of the websites to market insurance did not contravene the present law, but in our view it contravenes the policy intent of separating those two functions in bank branches,Flaherty said.Since the early 1990s, we have had the separation that banks do banking in bank branches and don't do insurance work in bank branches. That has been affected technologically by the use of websites. Some banks have been using their websites, their branch websites, with respect to insurance activities.
Typically, the banks have an insurance link on the front page of their domestic websites.A finance department spokesman suggested in an e-mail that the insurance arms of the banks would still be able to use the Internet if they kept the information separate from the main bank website. We're simply applying the same rules to web sites that we apply to branches. They can operate separate web sites, the e-mail said.(With additional reporting by Randall Palmer in Ottawa; Editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)
Canada faces possible new confidence test this week Wed Oct 7, 10:56 am ET
OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada's minority Conservative government could face a new confidence test in Parliament this week, a minister said on Wednesday, but judging from recent voting patterns an election will most likely be averted.Jay Hill, the Conservatives' House leader, told Reuters that a budget implementation bill now being debated in the House of Commons might come up for a preliminary vote this week. If it is voted down, the government would fall and the country would head to its second election in little more than a year. The bill contains a popular home renovation tax credit that received the backing of two of the three opposition parties in a vote on a motion on September 18, and if just one of them backs it again then the government will carry on.The biggest opposition party, the Liberal Party, has pledged to vote against the government on such confidence tests, no matter what, but it does not have the power on its own to force an election. If an election did happen, polls point to the Conservative government being reelected.
