Nicolas Sarkozy believes Tony Blair is the best man for the job Photo: APTony Blair’s name has been linked to the job of President of the Council of the European Union since the early drafting days of the Constitution, later rejected by French and Dutch voters.He was then publicly outed as a candidate for the job by his friend Nicolas Sarkozy after the October 2007 Lisbon summit that gave its name to the current treaty.The anointment was then put on hold when more voters, the Irish, rejected the Lisbon Treaty. The French and Dutch were not asked again and Gordon Brown broke a promise by Mr Blair to consult the British.Today, even before Ireland’s polling booths had opened for rerun referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, it is inevitable that Mr Blair is again being touted.The former British leader is a prime choice for those who want Mr Europe to have global recognition factor and a touch of the kind of leadership charisma that is not traditionally associated with the EU.

British officials are bullish that Mr Blair may well be anointed as the EU’s first president, with French support and lukewarm German consent, at an EU summit on October 29.The job description, along with salary, terms and conditions, remains unwritten and the text of Lisbon Treaty is not illuminating when describing the new role or its powers. To a great extent the personality will shape the post and if Mr Blair is the chosen one then he will have a massive influence on shaping a presidency that will rival national leaderships and overshadow the EU.Other Brussels institutions, especially the European Commission, are intensely aware that if Mr Blair takes the job, which does not require a popular election or vote, the EU will never be the same again. Power will shift irrevocably to the Council of the EU, which represents national governments and lead to the creation of Europe as continental bloc to rival the United States and China.The Commission will be left its internal role as policeman of the single market while President of the Council becomes an international colossus.Dry Lisbon Treaty text does not begin to describe the potential for the EU to become a new creature under the leadership of Blair-type figure.With new foreign policy institutions and shadowy committees on internal security, the EU is taking on a very different form to the European Community that Britons voted on joining in 1975.This destination, after a journey beginning with the 1986 Single European Act and 1992 Maastricht Treaty, and the creation of new institutions of public authority does not have the explicit consent of the British people via a referendum.Last month, unelected ambassadors to the EU began holding an extra meeting every week to thrash out the rules and procedures of the new post-Lisbon EU.Next week, if the Irish vote yes today, those meetings will be held three times a week. These talks take place behind closed doors and the papers that are discussed there are classified documents. Can, or should, negotiations to create new institutions of public authority and office legitimately be a private matter?

In secret, over diplomatic dinners, in the corridors of departments, embassies, ministries and chanceries, Europe’s rulers are playing a once in a lifetime game for the future of the EU. The public has not been invited, even as a spectator.A British referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, or its EU Constitution forebear, was never going to be a vote on whether Britain was in or out of Europe. It should, however, have been a debate on how we are ruled and how public authority, in the form of the EU, is constituted.This debate – integral to democracy – has been denied.Mr Blair once promised Britons a referendum on the original Treaty that created the post of EU president. In terms of democracy, he is not entitled to assume this public office without it.

THE IMF CATAPULTS FROM SHUNNED AGENCY TO GLOBAL CENTRAL BANK

A year ago,said law professor Ross Buckley on Australia’s ABC News last week, nobody wanted to know the International Monetary Fund. Now it’s the organiser for the international stimulus package which has been sold as a stimulus package for poor countries.The IMF may have catapulted to a more exalted status than that. According to Jim Rickards, director of market intelligence for scientific consulting firm Omnis, the unannounced purpose of last week’s G20 Summit in Pittsburgh was that the IMF is being anointed as the global central bank.In a CNBC interview on September 25, Rickards said, They’ve issued debt for the first time in history. They’re issuing SDRs. The last SDRs came out around 1980 or ’81, $30 billion. Now they’re issuing $300 billion. When I say issuing, it’s printing money; there’s nothing behind these SDRs.SDRs, or Special Drawing Rights, are a synthetic currency originally created by the IMF to replace gold and silver in large international transactions. But they have been little used until now. Why does the world suddenly need a new global fiat currency and global central bank? Rickards says it because of “Triffin’s Dilemma,” a problem first noted by economist Robert Triffin in the 1960s. When the world went off the gold standard, a reserve currency had to be provided by some large-currency country to service global trade. But leaving its currency out there for international purposes meant that the country would have to continually run large deficits, and that meant it would eventually go broke. The U.S. has fueled the world economy for the last 50 years, but now it is going broke. The U.S. can settle its debts and get its own house in order, but that would cause world trade to contract. A substitute global reserve currency is needed to fuel the global economy while the U.S. solves its debt problems, and that new currency is to be the IMF’s SDRs.

That’s the solution to Triffin’s dilemma, says Rickards, but it leaves the U.S. in a vulnerable position. If we face a war or other global catastrophe, we no longer have the privilege of printing money. The dollar becomes just another currency. To avoid that, the Federal Reserve is hinting that it is prepared to raise interest rates, even though that would mean further squeezing the real estate market and the real economy. Rickards was referring to an oped piece by Fed governor Kevin Warsh, published in The Wall Street Journal the same day the G20 met. Warsh said that the Fed would need to raise interest rates if asset prices rose – which Rickards interprets to mean gold, the traditional go-to investment of investors fleeing the dollar.Central banks hate gold because it limits their ability to print money,said Rickards. If gold were to suddenly go to $1,500 an ounce, it would mean the dollar was collapsing. Warsh was giving the market a heads up that the Fed wasn’t going to let that happen. The Fed would raise interest rates to attract dollars back into the country.Warsh is saying, We sort of have to trash the dollar, but we’re going to do it gradually,Rickards observed. Warsh is trying to preempt an unstable decline in the dollar. What they want, of course, is a stable, steady decline.What about the Fed’s traditional role of maintaining price stability? It’s nonsense, said Rickards. What they do is inflate the dollar to prop up the banks.The dollar has to be inflated because there is more debt outstanding than money to pay it with. The government currently has contingent liabilities of $60 trillion. There’s no feasible combination of growth and taxes that can fund that liability,Rickards said. The government could fund about half that in the next 14 years, which means the dollar needs to be devalued by half in that time.

Designed to Help Developing Countries or the Banks?
This all underscores another dilemma in the current monetary scheme, one that is even more intractable than Triffin’s. There is never enough money to cover the outstanding debt, because all money today except coins is created by banks in the form of loans, and more money is always owed back to the banks than they advance when they create their loans. Banks create the principal but not the interest necessary to pay their loans back. The Fed, which is owned by a consortium of banks and was set up to serve their interests, is tasked with seeing that the banks are paid back; and the only way to do that is to inflate the money supply to create the dollars to cover the missing interest. But that means diluting the value of the dollar, which imposes a stealth tax on the citizenry; and the money supply is inflated by making more loans, which adds to the debt and interest burden that the inflated money supply was supposed to relieve. The banking system is basically a pyramid scheme, which can be kept going only by continually creating more debt.And that brings us back to the IMF’s stimulus package discussed last week by Professor Buckley. The $500 billion package was billed as helping emerging nations hard hit by the global credit crisis, but Buckley said that he doubts that is what is really going on. Rather, the $500 billion pledged by the G20 nations is a stimulus package for the rich countries’ banks.Why does he think that? Because stimulus packages are usually grants. The money coming from the IMF will be extended in the form of loans. These are loans that are made by the G20 countries through the IMF to poor countries. They have to be repaid and what they’re going to be used for is to repay the international banks now. . . . [T]he money won’t really touch down in the poor countries. It will go straight through them to repay their creditors. . . . But the poor countries will spend the next 30 years repaying the IMF.Basically, said Professor Buckley, the loans extended by the IMF represent an increase in seniority of the debt.

At the moment the debt is owed by poor countries to banks, and if the poor countries had to, they could default on that. The bank debt is going to be replaced by debt that’s owed to the IMF, which for very good strategic reasons the poor countries will always service. . . . The rich countries have made this $500 billion available to stimulate their own banks, and the IMF is a wonderful party to put in between the countries and the debtors and the banks.The IMF is back in business, but it’s the old unseemly business of serving as the collection agency for the international banking industry. As long as third world debtors can service their loans by paying the interest on them, the banks can count the loans as assets on their books, allowing them to keep their pyramid scheme going by inflating the global money supply with yet more loans. It’s all for the greater good of the banks and their affiliated multinational corporations, funded with $500 billion from the taxpayers of the G20 nations.Ellen Brown developed her research skills as an attorney practicing civil litigation in Los Angeles. An American Christian preacher has been turned away from Britain, leaving thousands of people stranded at an evangelical rally in London this weekend.Benny Hinn, from Texas, who draws large crowds to his Pentecostal revival rallies, was turned back at Stansted airport under new rules on visiting ministers of religion.Many thousands of Pentecostal Christians travelled from across Britain and Europe and booked long weekend breaks in the capital’s hotels for his mission at the ExCeL exhibition centre in Docklands, East London, which had been due to begin on Thursday night.They were left disappointed after Border Agency officials turned him back when he landed with his private jet because he had failed to obtain a letter of sponsorship from a church.Instead, Mr Hinn flew on to Paris and tried to enter Britain at Luton airport but was again turned back. He was on his way back to France last night.Jill Masefield, who lives in Bristol, said that she and thousands of other followers had been left waiting for Mr Hinn to appear at the free preaching event, not knowing why he had not appeared.Instead, another pastor preached and requested donations of up to £1,000.

He fell foul of tier five of the new points-based system for all visitors to Britain, which came into effect last November. One of the aims of the new rules was to combat extremism and prevent teachers of religious hate entering the country.A Border Agency spokesman said: Under the UK’s tough new points-based system, religious workers must obtain a valid certificate of sponsorship prior to arriving in the UK. These rules are designed to make sure that a legitimate sponsor is linked to each application to enter the UK for work purposes.These rules are applied objectively and clearly set out for travellers. Journalists outraged at Obama for media shield bill changes

The Society of Professional Journalists said it is outraged over the Obama administration’s alterations to a bill which would leverage a shield law nation-wide to protect reporters and their sources.The Free Flow of Information Act, the group said on Friday, would have offered significant protections against journalists being forced to testify over the use of anonymous sources. However,[the] administration this week sent to Congress sweeping revisions to a ‘media shield’ bill that would significantly weaken its protections…reported The New York Times on Sept. 30.During the presidential campaign, then-Illinois Senator Obama supported the legislation and added his name to a list of cosponsors of the Senate’s media shield bill.Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who spoke later at an AP luncheon, has endorsed the shield law to protect reporters but told editors that courts should decide whether a confidential source deserves protection,reported USA Today in April, 2008.

Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Arlen Specter (D-PA), who sponsor the bill, joined the SPJ in finding fault with the administration’s alterations.The Times added: Mr. Specter called the proposed changes totally unacceptable,saying they would gut meaningful judicial review. And in a statement, Mr. Schumer said: The White House’s opposition to the fundamental essence of this bill is an unexpected and significant setback. White House Proposes Changes in Bill Protecting Reporters’ Confidentiality

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has told lawmakers that it opposes legislation that could protect reporters from being imprisoned if they refuse to disclose confidential sources who leak material about national security, according to several people involved with the negotiations.The administration this week sent to Congress sweeping revisions to a media shield bill that would significantly weaken its protections against forcing reporters to testify.The bill includes safeguards that would require prosecutors to exhaust other methods for finding the source of the information before subpoenaing a reporter, and would balance investigators’ interests with the public interest in gathering news and maintaining the free flow of information.But under the administration’s proposal, such procedures would not apply to leaks of a matter deemed to cause significant harm to national security. Moreover, judges would be instructed to be deferential to executive branch assertions about whether a leak caused or was likely to cause such harm, according to officials familiar with the proposal.The two Democratic senators who have been prime sponsors of the legislation, Charles E. Schumer of New York and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, said on Wednesday that they were disappointed by the administration’s position.

Mr. Specter called the proposed changes totally unacceptable,saying they would gut meaningful judicial review. And in a statement, Mr. Schumer said:The White House’s opposition to the fundamental essence of this bill is an unexpected and significant setback. It will make it hard to pass this legislation.But Ben LaBolt, a White House spokesman, called the proposed changes appropriate and argued that the administration was making a significant concession by accepting some judicial review. He noted that the Bush administration had strongly opposed such a bill as an incursion into executive power.The president believes the courts should have the power to review whether administrations appropriately conclude that the disclosure of information is necessary because maintaining confidentiality could cause significant harm to our national security,Mr. LaBolt said.The administration informed Congress of its proposal after an Oval Office meeting Monday between Mr. Obama and several top members of his national security team, including Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.; the F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III; and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, according to people involved with the negotiations. Military and intelligence officials have also expressed concerns about the bill.Several advocates for reporting groups reacted with dismay. They noted that as a senator, Mr. Obama had co-sponsored an earlier version of the media shield bill and that Mr. Holder had testified in favor of such legislation.This is the question I would have to ask, Do they really want a bill? said Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.It doesn’t appear that they do.Proponents of a shield law argue that it is in the public interest to allow reporters to protect confidential sources in order to bring important information to light. Opponents note that the unauthorized disclosure of classified information is illegal and argue that members of the news media should not be allowed to decide whether exposing national security secrets is justified.

About three dozen states have some form of a reporter-shield law, Ms. Dalglish said.

In a recent letter calling for a vote on the shield bill, Mr. Specter said that at least 19 journalists had been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors for information about confidential sources since 2001 and that four had been imprisoned for refusing to comply.Among them was Judith Miller, who as a reporter for The New York Times was subpoenaed in connection to the Valerie Wilson C.I.A. leak case. Prosecutors also threatened two San Francisco Chronicle reporters with jail over reporting based on leaked grand jury information about steroid use by professional athletes.The House has already approved a version of the shield bill, but it has stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Specter said lawmakers should vote the bill out and let the Obama administration, which has not taken an official stance on the bill, deal with it openly.If the president wants to veto it, let him veto it,Mr. Specter said.I think it is different for the president to veto a bill than simply to pass the word from his subordinates to my subordinates that he doesn’t like the bill.

Economic recovery underway - a cruel deception

FDR prolonged the Great Depression by at least a decade because of the wasteful, unconstitutional programs he implemented. Bush and Congress pulled off the biggest heist of century one year ago with the unconstitutional bail outs of private banks. They should all go to jail because any member of Congress who voted for those bail outs is an outlaw. If you legislate outside the supreme law of the land, the U.S. Constitution, you are no better than an outlaw.The usurper in the White House has pushed through the same flavor programs as FDR with the blessing of the crooks in Congress. One of the most unconstitutional New Deal swindles was the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA). This Act was passed in June 1933. It created another gigantic bureaucracy, like a fat hog giving birth, called the National Recovery Administration. Under the NRA, most manufacturing industries were abruptly and illegally forced into government-mandated cartels.[1]The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), passed earlier this year and dubbed the mother of all stimulus packages,is just a duplication of the failed policies of FDR. Not only has it done nothing to stop the hemorrhaging of jobs, the phony stimulus will make any recovery impossible for many more years to come. Why? Because we the people will be taxed into poverty to pay for it and have nothing left to spend into the economy. The only thing these unconstitutional bail outs and insane, massive spending bills have done is rob we the people of the fruits of our labor to fund nonsense, filth, more welfare and fill the coffers of Wall Street bankers and cronies of the poltroons in Congress. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has spent $51,500 of stimulus money on nine mascot costumes and robots, including Bobber the Water Safety Dog, Coastie the Water Safety Education Seaboat and Seamoor the Sea Serpent Robot. They'll be used in parks in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Utah to teach children about safe boating and swimming.
The Army Corps of Engineers used $455 of Recovery Act money to rent two ice machines and 300 bags of ice for the Melvin Price Lock and Dam auxiliary gate repair modification project in East Alton, Ill.The National Park Service purchased an electric golf cart for $8,223 to distribute oyster shells at the DeSoto National Memorial in Bradenton, Fla. The memorial commemorates the Spanish exploration of Florida. There are several walking trails around the site, and one happened to be made from crushed oyster shells.The General Service Administration's Public Buildings Service bought a reach-in freezer for the cafeteria at the Robert J. Dole Courthouse in Kansas City, Kan., for $2,655.The Department of Energy is spending $3.3 million of stimulus funds on lawyers to support the $25 billion Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturers Loan Program.

Columnist John Nolte, combed through the expenditures and found this:The NEA was given $80 million of the government's $787 billion economic stimulus bill to spread around to needy artists nationwide … [I]ncluding a $50,000 infusion for the Frameline film house, which recently screened Thundercrack, the world's only underground kinky art porno horror film, complete with four men, three women and a gorilla.[T]he weekly production of Perverts Put Out at San Francisco’s CounterPULSE, whose long-running pansexual performance series invites guests to join your fellow pervs for some explicit, twisted fun.[A]n additional boost from a $25,000 stimulus grant [will go to] The Symmetry Project,The show depicts the sharing of a central axis, [as] spine, mouth, genitals, face, and anus reveal their interconnectedness and centrality in embodied experience[.]”In the flesh — and there's a lot of it — it amounts to two people writhing naked on the floor, a government-funded tango in the altogether.Is this what you go to work everyday for, worrying about your job and feeding your family? To fund the above? This is the biggest rape of the American people in my life time. I've been a full time activist for twenty years; the grand larceny of we the people is breath taking.No new jobs have been created since the lies and greed were exposed a little over a year ago when creative banking shell games finally burst at the seams. Remember the usurper's campaign promises? As I wrote nine months ago in one of my columns:Oh, I know. Comrade Obama is going to create two million new jobs. Dec. 6, 2008: President-elect Barack Obama said Saturday he has asked his economic team for a recovery plan that saves or creates more than 2 million jobs, makes public buildings more energy-efficient and invests in roads and schools.

Wait! It's three million new jobs with 600,000 of them paper pushers for the government. Jan. 3, 2009: The president-elect says he wants to create three million new jobs -- this is a change from a few weeks ago, when he said he wanted the plan to create OR SAVE two million jobs.Wait! It's 3.5 million new jobs. Jan. 10, 2009: Facing growing criticism of his economic recovery plan, President-elect Barack Obama made public Saturday a detailed analysis by his economic advisers that estimates the $775 billion plan of tax cuts and new spending would create 3.5 million jobs over the next two years.Wait! It's 4.1 million new jobs. January 10, 2009: President-elect Barack Obama countered critics with an analysis Saturday by his economic team showing that a program of tax cuts and spending like he's proposed would create up to 4.1 million jobs, far more than the 3 million he has insisted are needed to lift the country from recession.[2]Almost three million jobs have been lost since the usurper took office and the same Congress went back into session.

Here's the reality of the unstoppable freight train.The broader unemployment figures nationwide is 16.8% [3]. The reality is you have unemployment rates in cities much higher than being reported; many double digits. Congress has refused to implement solutions, i.e., stopping the scam called withholding tax, which would immediately inject the economy with millions of spending dollars.[4] As long as people continue to hoard what money they have left after losing half their income to taxes, the worse it will get for the economy. Can you blame people who are shell shocked by what's going on? They've seen their 401(k)s bleed with more coming. Now they're in panic mode as they watch the insanity continue in Washington with these massive, unconstitutional bills, i.e., cap and trade to support the massive hoax called global warming.In a land so rich in natural and human resources, food stamp assistance has now soared to 35 million recipients. The states of the Union cannot keep up with unemployment claims or the massive cost of social welfare programs like food stamps. It will get worse. All of this spending is going to shock Americans come April 15, 2010 because this pillaging of the fruits of our labor has to be paid for and that means more of your paycheck.The U.S. Treasury, the people's purse, is now over drawn just under $12 TRILLION dollars with $99 TRILLION dollars in unfunded mandates. Every check being written by Congress is hot. No funds in the bank. This Ponzi scheme is killing America. It is turning your dreams to ashes while enriching foreign countries. $800 MILLION dollars a week is paid to the communist Chinese just for the interest alone on our debt! Eighty-seven banks have closed this year (as I write this article). Every Friday night you can go to www.fdic.gov and see the latest list. Each time one of these banks is taken over, the FDIC must find another bank with enough assets to absorb the zombie banks bad paper. What happens when you run out of banks to absorb the bad paper of all these banks being seized? The FDIC is broke. Next will be yet another bail out.[5] As reported by the WSJ, Sept. 1, 2009:Through more than 50 deals known as loss shares,the FDIC has agreed to absorb losses on the detritus of the financial crisis -- from loans on two log cabins in the woods of northwestern Illinois to hundreds of millions of dollars in busted condominium loans in Florida. The agency's total exposure is about six times the amount remaining in its fund that guarantees consumers' deposits, exposing taxpayers to a big, new risk.[6]Where will that money come from? You, me, our children and grand children in higher taxes. The number of bleeding banks isn't about to slow down. Predictions are that another 1,000 will close in the next two years.[7]Do you know what derivatives are? The shortest explanation is a con game that has grown to such numbers, it's a joke to even try to make someone believe that big thermo nuclear bomb will simply disappear by some magic trick:The $531 Trillion Dollar Derivatives Time Bomb. What are derivatives? Some investors describe them as “dormant economic weapons of mass destruction. They essentially are large leveraged bets on top of stocks, bonds and commodities. Money can be made within months or seconds by betting if a stock will go up, down or even remain the same. With no credit rating you can place a bet worth double your account balance. Big time investors get greater leverage with these instantaneous loans.The New York Times, Oct 8th 2008: The derivatives market is $531 trillion, up from $106 trillion in 2002?. This market is setup with odds similar to a racetrack. Trillions are won and lost (transferred) every second. But unlike a racetrack the big players have ultimate control. And despite signs of improvement in consumer confidence and retail stocks rising, Davidowitz is steadfast in his belief the consumer is dead. Rather than summarize, let me just highlight some of his best one-liners. On retail: The retail business is terrible... It's almost all negative. We're going to close hundreds of thousands of stores.On the consumer: They're still over leveraged, they're losing jobs, their credit has been cut back.On America: We are in the tank forever. As a country we are out of control, we're in a death spiral.Davidowitz isn't exaggerating. The American consumer is broke and buying only essentials after scrapping together the rent or mortgage money. Forget using the old plastic: Credit Card Delinquency Wave Reaching Tidal Force - August 19, 2009 [10]So far in 2009, the data surrounding credit card charge offs and mortgage delinquencies has not been pretty... at all...Credit card delinquencies (payments more than 30 days late) rose to 6.7% up from 6.68%. Charge-offs (listed as uncollectable by the banks) rose to 9.55%, up from 7.64%. The scary thing here is that this trend is accelerating.An acceleration in charge-offs and delinquencies obviously means bad things for financial institutions and the economy in general. Much like the impending (and already current) problems in commercial real estate, we've likened credit card charge-offs as a second wave in this economic crisis. The first tidal wave came through and washed out a whole lot in the economy. As people begin to lose work and fall behind on their massive debt repayments, they drown. This creates a second wave of write downs for financial institutions and another set of problems for an economy trying desperately to recover. The initial tidal wave hits and knocks America down. Then, when America starts to get enough strength to stand up, they will be washed away again with a whole new slew of problems.

This is due to the delayed effect the first wave had on the consumer. After people are laid off, they scramble to find new jobs and dwindle what little savings they have left. (Remember, America's savings rate has not been the best and we've concluded that it needs to rise in order to help get out of this mess). And, the fact that the unemployment rate keeps rising is not helping things either. Once their savings is gone, they rely on credit cards as a flotation device. And, this scenario is only the people who don't already have credit card debt. Those already suffering under this burden begin to bear an even heavier load until they simply can't make payments at all. This effectual lag has slowly but steadily been building for months and the latest charge-off and delinquency data has begun to spike.This year we saw a mass return to lay aways at stores like K-Mart and Wal-Mart -- to buy pencils, paper and notebooks for school children. Why? Because Americans have no credit left. They are tapped out. Christmas will be the death knell for thousands of retail stores and that means devastation for your local economies. It is the classic trickle down effect and it is hitting cities and towns hard all across America. However, I would rather know the truth than be fed lies that will hurt my family down the road. These professional liars out in Washington, DC., aided by the reckless, irresponsible mainstream media,are despicable.What we saw last year with the sub prime housing crash isn't over by any stretch of the imagination. The second wave of mortgages that could go into foreclosure will hit next year and it's going to be very, very bad. Put this into a search engine: Alt-A, Option ARM California Zombie Mortgage State. The numbers don't lie.By 2011, roughly 50% of all home mortgages in this country will be underwater.That means a house that was sold for $405,000 in June 2005, in Natomas Park, Sacramento, California is now worth $238,000. The people who bought that house will never be able to sell it for anywhere near what they paid. That is why so many have simply turned in the keys to the bank and walked away.Add into the equation property taxes. As these properties go under water, tax revenues drop across the board. This is one of the reasons the states are drowning along with the serious disaster just waiting to explode: state pension funds. Check your own state pension fund and try not to keel over. With the states going bankrupt, where do you think the money is going to come from to fund the hundreds of billions due out in pensions? It isn't just Oregon. CalPERS Admits California Pension Costs Unsustainable August 18, 2009: The CalPERS chief actuary says pension costs are unsustainable,and the giant public employee pension system plans to meet with stakeholders to discuss the issue. I don't want to sugarcoat anything,Ron Seeling, the CalPERS chief actuary said as he neared the end of his comments.We are facing decades without significant turnarounds in assets, decades of -- what I, my personal words, nobody else's -- unsustainable pension costs of between 25 percent of pay for a miscellaneous plan and 40 to 50 percent of pay for a safety plan (police and firefighters) ... unsustainable pension costs.Additionally, banks are losing in the courts because they can't prove they own the houses they funded with mortgages. In the rush for greed, billions in loans got bundled, the paper work wasn't done properly and now the banks are in trouble. Since the banks can't prove they own the property, the courts are saying, Well, better luck next time.The buyers are living in the houses, but no longer make payments to the bank. More write offs. More debt for the banks.The price of gas is going up again, which will hurt everyone across the board. All this spending like drunken sailors over the past 12-14 months is going to come back and kill off what's left of the middle class and drive lower income families into abject poverty. During the Great Depression,farming was the one sector that kept America fed, but that is not the case today. Once again, Congress continues to destroy family owned farms by refusing parity so they can compete in the open market. If you read one book on this issue, read The Fed and The Farmer. What's being done to our farmers and land owners is a national tragedy and yet, Americans continue voting the same crooks and nitwits back to the U.S. Congress.

What about savings to help Americans as they lose their jobs? 34 Percent of U.S. workers have one week or less of savings. One paycheck from disaster. Even those who are working hard, husband and wife or just single folks can't find a nickel to save because we are being driven into poverty by more and more taxes. As the states continue to slide into bankruptcy, state legislatures and local municipalities are passing new taxes for everything including the air you breathe in an effort to stave off collapse. An ugly picture. The reality is just now sinking in and that's one of the reasons for the tea parties.What I've covered in this article is just the tip of the iceberg. It's not so far-fetched an idea, you know. We spent half a century and trillions of dollars to make sure that it would never happen, so it's really not such a strange notion.So what if the Russians invaded? What if they came and stole all of our money?

What if the Russians invaded and enslaved our children as cheap worker bee drones locked in dismal dead-end jobs? What if the Russians invaded and excavated all of our natural resources, leaving only mountains of toxic debris in their wake? What if the Russians invaded and they ruined our infrastructure, thrashed our educational institutions, and stuck us with a grossly inadequate healthcare system? What if the Russians invaded and incarcerated a huge percentage of our people in for-profit jails? What if they ruined our military by sending it off on big-money colonial expeditions? What if they cut the legs out from under the middle class? What if the Russians invaded and turned us against each other, tricking this tribe of Americans into hating that tribe, in order to keep any of us from realizing that they were looting our country?

If the Russians did any of these things, we’d kill em. Dead.If the Russians invaded, we'd send our army to crush them in defense of our country (or, at least, we hire somebody to do it).If the Russians invaded, we'd be furious and raging and hateful and destructive – for good reason, too – and we would bring to them the full measure of American organized violence in order to take back our country from their plundering rampages.Of course, the Russians haven’t invaded. But what's astonishing about the moment we live in is that America has in fact been subjected to all these travails. We have essentially been invaded by those who wish us ill, and our national and private resources are being stripped bare. This country is being looted, and everything in it that isn't nailed down is being carted away and sold off.Our children are being saddled with enormous financial burdens. Our educational and healthcare systems, sucked dry as mere revenues sources, are falling to pieces. Our infrastructure is approaching ruin.Our jobs, our industries and our community resources have been bundled up and exported to where the work can be done far cheaper, and the workers are compliant. Increasingly we are scrambling just to survive. Admittedly, our government remains absolutely dedicated to making sure that some of us do extremely well. It's just that that some doesn’t include anyone you know.What is absolutely astonishing about the moment that we live in is that we have been essentially invaded, we have been absolutely looted, and yet we don't seem to be the slightest bit angry about that.If the Russians had done it, we would be absolutely furious. But in fact, it was our own overclass that did it, and not only are we not furious at them, we don't even notice the crime. Or, if we do notice, we’re furious at some ridiculously inappropriate target, like a liberal president who isn't even remotely liberal.

America has always been a country with its full and fair share of flaws, but for quite some time during the middle part of the twentieth century, we got one thing reasonably right. There was a bargain then, between elites and the government and the public. According to the terms of the deal, the aristocracy would still be fantastically rich, but there would be limitations on their wealth, because some of that wealth, some substantial amount, needed to be shared with the working people and the middle class, and it was the role of government to make sure that that happened. Many among the well-to-do even shared that consensus.Since Ronald Reagan rode into town, however, that deal is off the table, replaced by what is essentially a new New Deal – or, more accurately, simply the Bad Old Deal. Under the terms of this new/old arrangement, the unregulated wealthy grab absolutely everything they can get their hands on, the middle class scrambles for whatever bare existence it can maintain, and the rest of America, the working class and the poor, fall deeper and deeper into third world-style poverty. Under the terms of this new system, the role of the government is no longer to provide for the welfare of the people, nor to ensure that there are limitations on what the plutocracy can liberate from them. Under the terms of this new arrangement, the function of the government is simply to serve as a tool, assisting that plutocracy in depriving America's own people of everything that can be taken from them.That means that in the last thirty years we've entirely restructured the economy so that the super-wealthy have become obscenely-super-wealthy, and the middle class are lucky to have stood still, and haven't really even managed that. If one examines the destination of the considerable GDP growth that America has sustained over the last three decades, it's gone entirely to the richest of Americans. The middle class has actually lost ground. That's an astonishing fact, but think about it: Despite robust economic growth, workers today actually make less than they did back in the 1970s.

Even more amazing, it wasn't that hard to pull off. All you had to do was to fool the people and divert their attention to other circuses to go along with the remaining crumbs of bread. Meanwhile, unions were decimated by changes in government policy. Jobs were exported – first to the south, then to Mexico, then to China, now to Thailand or Vietnam, and probably soon to Africa – in a never-ending search for the cheapest possible way to wring value out of the working people of the world, leaving Americans without any sort of remaining industry or economic base. Tax policy was also deployed, channeling money from current working Americans, and especially from their children, and diverted it to the already wealthy. The upshot of all these policy changes was that the richest Americans became absolutely, astonishingly, fabulously rich, and the rest of us are barely holding on, if that.If the Russians had come here and done this – if they had come and stolen our resources, if they come and enslaved our children into inescapable soul-numbing jobs, if they had left us with environmental degradation and a wrecked economy and destroyed education system and a crumbling infrastructure and a sieve-like healthcare regime – if the Russians had come and done any or all of this, we would've risen up in anger and hostility and patriotism and nationalism, and we’d have loaded up our weapons and killed every last one of them.But it wasn't the Russians that did it, it was our own overclass. And worse still, it was our own government acting as though they were protecting us from the evil bogeyman du jour, while in fact they were assisting the wealthy in bleeding us dry, until our anemia left us fit only for our profit-seeking hospitals.Think about how idiotic you have to be to allow yourself to be looted and not even realize the money's been taken out of your pocket. Think about how politically immature you have to be to allow a thief to walk right up to you, take your money, and not even recognize who that thief is. Think about how stupid you have to be to blame it on somebody else – like gays, or Iraqis, or black helicopters – and not pay attention to the real rip-off artist who's stealing your money.

I would tip my hat in admiration to these plutocrats for the cleverness of their scheme – even if a scam this ugly requires the predators to have the moral sensibility of an empty parking lot – but in fact what they've done isn't really all that clever. The successes of their crimes have lots more to do with the fatuousness of their victims than with the acumen of the criminals.Worse yet, as if the American public hasn't already been stupid enough, here we are thirty years down the road from the advent of Reaganism, and we still don't get it. Here we are after three decades of being looted, still unable to figure out who's ripping us off. Here we are, even after the implausibly complete failures and disasters and depredations of the Bush administration, and most Americans are still unable to point to the criminals and their ideology, and identify the source of the crime.Which makes the future looked even more shaky. Now we have a president who most Americans are coming to believe is some sort of far-left Stalinist, while in fact he is every bit the full-measured facilitator of corporate parasitism that either George W. Bush or Bill Clinton were.And yet, because he is being made out to be some sort of outrageously decadent liberal, and because Americans are too dim to figure out the ruse, this president – who is failing to address the concerns of ordinary Americans, most especially because he's not working for them in the least – is bound to fail, and is looking increasingly like the proud owner of a one-term presidency. And what we can expect in reaction to that failure – ironically and disastrously and jaw-droppingly idiotically – is a sharp turn to the right. When Obama fails, it will be framed, as it already is being, as some sort of grand failure of liberalism. In fact, of course, just the opposite is true. It's a grand success of the overclass’s looting of America.

In this respect, Obama offers precious little change, even from the crimes of George W. Bush. Look at his healthcare initiative, for example. I don't know about you, but I’d say it's a pretty safe bet that anything that the big pharmacological and big health insurance industries are in favor of is pretty much guaranteed to be a disaster for the rest of us – you know, we the people of the United States. This bill no more represents an initiative for the purpose of bringing healthcare to Americans than George Bush’s prescription drug bill was an initiative to improve the life of seniors. In both cases, whatever vicarious and accidental improvements that exist are simply diversionary window-dressing on what is really another example of legalized corporate colonialism.In the case of Obama's healthcare legislation, what's happening is that enormous quantities of new customers are being forced to buy expensive health coverage from insurance industry predators who will be vastly enriched by means of this new legislation, which is precisely why they would favor something that ordinarily we would expect them to oppose, and that we certainly would expect them to oppose if Obama was any kind of progressive whatsoever, even if only in his personal fantasies.The bank bailouts were absolutely no different. What an amazing episode, what an amazing looting of the American public, what an amazing chapter in the destruction of an empire – and all brought to us by a supposedly liberal president. In fact, Obama was simply extending the tradition of the Bush administration, and the Reagan ideology prior to that, which calls for pillaging the federal treasury in order to divert the maximal amount of money to economic elites, and then leaving the bill for the American taxpayer.One could go on and on from here. Obama continues to deploy more mercenaries in Iraq and Afghanistan than there are uniformed American soldiers. He continues to support privatization of everything from American prisons to schools. He asks for the most tepid possible re-institution of regulations on the financial industry, and when the thieves on Wall Street growl back at him, he abandons even those most limited of obstacles to their worst impulses.The upshot is that today American voters have two choices. They can have the party that represents the maximal plundering of America, at the maximal speed. Or they can have the party that represents nearly the same crime at almost the same velocity.

Either way, the United States has ceased in any meaningful way to be owned by citizens. Its voters vote, but their representatives in Congress and in the administration are beholden to economic elites, and act entirely accordingly. The country's institutions, infrastructure, and social relations are all being dismantled piece by piece and either relocated elsewhere or sold off in order to wring yet another drop of wealth out of the hides of working Americans, so that those who are already wealthy beyond belief can be even further enriched.If some other country did this to us – if the Russians invaded and took all our resources, and enslaved us and our children to work in dismal jobs when we could find any work at all sufficient to maintaining a rapidly sinking middle class livelihood – if those things happened and the perpetrator was a foreign power, we'd rise up and go to war and we’d kill every last one of em.But we’re not doing any of that, even though a very real enemy has invaded this country and stripped it bare.In fact, this society is pretty busy making sure that we don't even notice who that enemy is.David Michael Green is a professor of political science at Hofstra University in New York.
