Earthquake hits Solomon Islands Sun Apr 29, 3:31 AM ET

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea - A moderate earthquake toppled several houses Sunday in the Solomon Islands near where a quake and tsunami killed 52 people earlier this month, an official said. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 5.4 quake struck mid-afternoon local time, 25 miles southeast of the region's main town of Gizo and 6 miles beneath the earth's crust. The quake was too small to pose a tsunami risk.Provincial government member Danny Kennedy said there were reports of houses being toppled on the island of Mono in the western Solomons, but he said Gizo appeared to have suffered little damage. There were no reports of casualties. It certainly shook us quite a lot, Kennedy said.A magnitude 8.1 quake and tsunami on April 2 killed 52 people, including 33 on Gizo island.

Israel wraps up West Bank war games Fri Apr 27, 8:31 AM ET

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel has ended extensive military manoeuvres in the occupied West Bank that were designed to assimilate lessons learned from last year's war in Lebanon, a senior officer said on Friday. For the last 40 hours we have conducted large ground exercises in the Judean desert, Lieutenant Colonel Elad Ratsabi, the commander of the elite Shelah unit, told AFP by telephone.

These exercises were organised to deal with various scenarios and to take on board lessons learnt after the Second Lebanon War, he said. The war games mobilised a brigade, including artillery, armoured vehicles, infantry and sappers, and followed two and a half months of intensive training, Ratsabi said. A brigade numbers about 2,000 soldiers.A government commission into the conduct and failures of the Lebanon war between Israel and the Shiite militia Hezbollah is to publish partial findings on Monday, amid ongoing calls for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign. The commission was established on September 17 under pressure from thousands of army reservists who complained about inadequate preparation for battle, as well as perceived military and political mismanagement of the conflict.

Inquiring minds lead to saved souls at Creation Museum
allie martin-OneNewsNow.com-April 27, 2007

Workers at a museum that will focus on the biblical account of creation say the facility is changing lives, even though it has not yet officially opened. Most recently, a 28-year-old construction worker accepted Christ as Savior and Lord after working at the Creation Museum site for a few months.Ken Ham is president of Answers in Genesis (AIG), the biblical creationist and Christian apologetics group that is opening the Creation Museum, its $27-million project in northern Kentucky near Cincinnati. So far, he says, ten contractors have been saved while working at the museum, where many of the workers hear the gospel as they inquire about the museum.Ministry staff and volunteers have been working on the Creation Museum for several years, Ham says; however, he notes, You also hire people from temp agencies and also have outside contractors that come in, and they start asking about the museum. And for many of these outside workers, he explains, we find that they have no background understanding of the Bible at all, and they say things like, Oh, I didn't know the Bible taught about that.

At that point, these curious workers hear about the flood, and then they hear about the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, and the Tower of Babel, and so on, the AIG spokesman notes. Then, he says, what really happens is, as they're asking about the museum, they actually hear what the Bible is teaching, and they hear the gospel and then they start to ask more questions. That is because, for many of these people, they just have a lack of knowledge. They've just never heard, Ham asserts. That is why the Bible instructs Christians to go out into all the world and preach the gospel, he points out. If they haven't heard, we need to go out and tell them. All this is exciting too, the biblical creationist says, because when they come to the museum here, they recognize [that] we're not just saying, Here's what the Bible says. We're also saying, And we have this evidence to back it up.The Answers in Genesis Creation Museum is set to open Memorial Day, May 28. The attraction will feature more than 80 animatronic dinosaurs, a room housing a replica of Noah's Ark, and rooms portraying Babylon and Eden.American Family News Network - All Rights Reserved

EU pledges to help fight diseases under Millennium Goals
CommissionHealth/Consumer 28 April 2007 - Issue : 727

The European Union reiterated the commitment to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis on a global scale and help meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The Council comprising of the Foreign Ministers of 27 members states of the EU on April 232 highlighted the important role the European Union plays in confronting these diseases and urged concerned to the pursue goals and objectives set out in the 2000 UN Millennium Declaration and allied proposals to fight against HIV/AIDS globally. The Council recognises that the fight against HIV/AIDS can only be successful if a comprehensive approach is taken that includes scaling up significantly towards the goal of universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010, it stated in its conclusions.

Emphasising the importance of achieving sufficient, long-term, predicable, sustainable and increased funding to tackle HIV/AIDS, the Council declared, The EU will collectively maintain and increase funding to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) and welcomes also the development and exploration of innovative sources of financing including through such mechanism as the International Drug Purchase Facility (UNITAID), the International Finance Facility (IFF), Advance Market Commitment for Vaccines (AMC) and others. The Council called for sponsoring “an EU or International Conference at the expert level with a wide group of stakeholders including representatives of the WHO, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA), civil society, including the International Partnership for Microbicides and the Association for Microbiocide developments, regulatory authorities from developing countries and the pharmaceutical industry, on expanding HIV/AIDS preventive options.

The EU commitment not only to recognise the importance of the ongoing programming process for developing counties, but also to provide the necessary funding through different European financial instruments comes as a shot in the arm for the efforts around the world to fight these diseases especially HIV/AIDS.

Israel denies Olmert comments on Iran missile raid Sat Apr 28, 8:30 AM ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office denied on Saturday he had told a German magazine Iran's disputed nuclear program could be severely hit by firing 1,000 cruise missiles in a 10-day attack. Germany's Focus magazine said its reporter, Amir Taheri, asked Olmert in an interview whether military action would be an option if Iran continued to defy the United Nations. It quoted Olmert as responding: Nobody is ruling it out."It is impossible perhaps to destroy the entire nuclear program but it would be possible to damage it in such a way that it would be set back years, Focus quoted Olmert as saying. It would take 10 days and would involve the firing of 1,000 Tomahawk cruise missiles, it quoted him as saying.

Olmert's spokeswoman, Miri Eisin, said the prime minister had spoken to the author of the Focus article, but she said Olmert did not make the comments that were attributed to him.Eisin said the meeting was not an interview and was conducted for background purposes, on the understanding it would not be used. The prime minister did not say these things, Eisin said.Ulrich Schmidla, a foreign affairs editor at Focus magazine, said he would try to contact the reporter who conducted the interview, who was a regular contributor.Iran says it is developing nuclear technology for power generation, but the West fears it is trying to build a bomb and two sets of U.N. sanctions have been imposed on Tehran.European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana urged Washington on Friday to speak directly to Iran over its nuclear program and said he was sure Tehran was ready for such talks.Focus quoted Olmert as saying UN sanctions should be given a chance to work before military action was considered.

We must give the (U.N.) process time to take effect, it quoted him as saying. We have no intention of attacking Iran at the moment.Olmert was quoted as saying he doubted whether Iran's nuclear program was as far advanced as Tehran said. I don't think that Iran is about to cross the nuclear technology threshold as its leaders claim, he was quoted as saying. We still have time to stop them.Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has proclaimed Iran's ability to enrich on an industrial scale, but U.N. inspectors say it remains at test level.Iran would face further sanctions if it has not stopped enrichment by a new Security Council deadline of May 24.

Jerusalem Day: By Evans K. Chama SUN APR 29,07

May 16, 2007 Israel celebrates the 40th anniversary of Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day; the commemoration of the unification of Jerusalem after the 6-day war of 1967. In 1947, the UN decided to create a Jewish and an Arab state out of the Land of Israel of which Jerusalem was to remain neutral, belonging to neither state. That couldn’t be realised exactly as planned. When the British mandate ended on 15th May 1948, Seven Arab states waged war on Israel that ended in dividing Jerusalem. The East of Jerusalem, including the Old City, occupied by Arabs, belonged to Jordan while the West of Jerusalem was in the state of Israel. The borders were strict, no going and coming between these two peoples. The matter nonetheless remained unsettled for Jerusalem was an organic, inseparable part of Israel in the Jewish conscience, belief and history. And Jews have always demonstrated against loss of Jerusalem in history.

Some refused to eat meat or drink wine when nothing of it could be sacrificed no longer nor poured on the altar as libation, after losing Jerusalem and the Temple. Even in times of joy a Jew would not forget the lost Jerusalem. In the house, he would leave a patch of wall unfinished, at the wedding a groom’s forehead would be dabbed with ashes, the jewellery of the bride removed, and a cup broken. Jews are enjoined, If I forget you, Jerusalem, Rabbi Yehudah Prero said, let my right hand forget its skill.A Jew cannot make a home outside Israel, not matter his success in Diaspora he remains a slave; subject to immoral influences. The land of Israel is the holiest of all lands, and the city of Jerusalem the holiest in Israel. Only when in this holy land can a Jew be faithful to the Torah. Owing to this passion, such division of the City was unbearable and tension was already growing between Israel and Arabs states like Jordan, Syria, and Egypt, to mention some. War was in sight. Israel pre-emptied this situation and launched an attack on 5th June 1967; a war that lasted six days ending in Israel’s capture of the East of Jerusalem.

The Commander`s Speech of victory to the soldiers at the Temple Mount leaves no shadows of that Passion: For 2,000 years, the Temple Mount was off limits to the Jews. Until you, the paratroopers, came and returned it to the bosom of its people. The Western Wall, towards which every Jewish heart beats, is again in our hands…. To you has fallen the great privilege to complete the circle, to give back to the people its eternal capital and its sacred centre….Jerusalem is yours - forever. The Israel government was quick to effect the unification. The municipal area extended and Israel law applied in the whole City. Jews acquired houses in the newly conquered land. The garbage that had accumulated at the Western Wall, including the house around, was quickly cleared. The situation was quite delicate owing to different interests involved in the city. Firstly, for Jews, Israel is a land given to them as chosen people with Jerusalem as the citadel of God; his presence assured by the Temple. Then Arabs had lived here hundreds of years but all of a sudden became foreigners in the land they had known as theirs. The Arab Muslim world was also concerned about the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest place in Islam, which stands on the Temple Mount.

Christians too needed assurance, would they continue to have free access to their Holy Places; respecting the existing rights? Then, an international community. When Israeli Parliament declared Jerusalem, the undivided, eternal capital of the State of Israel in 1980 thirteen national embassies in Jerusalem closed as the declaration was against the UN resolution. However, the Israeli Government pledged commitment to make Jerusalem open to all members of different religions. In all these arrangements there is, of course, nothing that alters in the slightest degree any of the existing rights in the Holy Places, which the Government of Israel will respect in full. So Jerusalem Day, celebrated on Iyar 28, 8th month of the Jewish calendar, commemorates the re-possession of the entire city.

On this day k`eir shechubra la yachdav slogan is chanted that means The city which was reunited, based on Psalm122:3 The built-up Jerusalem is like a city that was joined together within itself. Even the festival Hallel, rarely used in Jewish liturgy, except at Passover and Independence day, is recited on this day because of the importance attached to Jerusalem, more than Israeli’s political power over the rest of the land of Israel. Crowds march around the city singing, dancing, and waving flags walking through the Old City to the Western Wall where speeches and festive dancing continue. This is a triumphal achievement for Jews. During the 19 years between the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the Six Day War in 1967, Jews could not dare set foot in the Old City, no access therefore to their shrine. Only one possibility was open for them.

They used to climb the Mount Zion or the cemetery on Mount of Olives in order to set their eyes on the Temple Mount. Then, is it not just plain that Jerusalem Day is actually a Jewish feast? Well, today a Jew or an Arab can walk on the streets of East or West of Jerusalem, though their relationship still leaves much to desire. Besides, thousands of pilgrimages: Jews, Christians and Moslems pour into the city each day, free to worship and visit their Holy Places. If all that is the fruit of the unification, then, Jerusalem Day should be a celebration for many other people than Jews alone; and therefore a reason enough to be interested in the well-being of this Holy City. Therefore, if I do not pray for your peace Jerusalem, indeed, let my right hand forget its skill. Evans K. Chama 2007 A Missionary of Africa, studying theology in Jerusalem

Russian leader newly combative, defiant By DOUGLAS BIRCH, Associated Press Writer Sat Apr 28, 8:41 PM ET

MOSCOW - As Vladimir Putin enters what could be the last year of his presidency, he has become more defiant of international pressure and more willing to challenge the United States and Europe.

Russia's affluence and stability, fueled by high oil prices, have given him the confidence to confront the West and to try to reassert the nation's influence as a world power. But Western critics warn the Kremlin's new assertiveness reflects renewed imperial ambitions and threatens its neighbors.Either way, the world appears to be entering a new period of accusation and acrimony in East-West relations with fresh fractures now appearing in fault lines resembling those that marked the Cold War.The Russians don't want a return to the Cold War, said Andrew Kuchins, an analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. But on issues they care about, they're going to play harder ball.In his state of the nation speech Thursday, Putin denounced what he said was foreign interference in Russia's internal affairs. Angered by a U.S. plan to place ballistic missile defenses in the Czech Republic and Poland, he threatened to walk away from an agreement that regulates the deployment of heavy non-nuclear weapons around Europe.

The Russian leader also rattled Washington in February with a closely watched and bellicose speech in Munich, accusing the United States of an overly aggressive American foreign policy.Russia has increased prices of oil and gas in the face of defiance from former Soviet states, briefly cutting off supplies in some cases.European officials watched the disruptions with growing concern about Russia's reliability as an energy supplier. The United States and others in the West have accused Russia of trying to use its vast energy resources as a political weapon. Some analysts say Putin has sought to turn back the clock by embracing the great power politics of the 19th century. Only this time, the Kremlin seems prepared to rely mainly on its economic clout and energy resources, rather than military force, to influence its neighbors.

Given Putin's overwhelming popularity at home, his successor who is scheduled to be elected in March 2008 is likely to be similarly combative.Dmitri Trenin, a scholar with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Russia's new assertiveness is the logical result of the trauma it suffered after the Soviet collapse.Putin's criticism of the West kind of clears the air, he said, by demanding Russia's opinions be respected. That follows a decade when the Kremlin felt powerless in its dealings with the West in general and the United States in particular. There are three models of United States-Russian collaboration, at least as seen by Putin, Trenin said in a recent interview. The Gorbachev period can be summarized as attempts at partnership through concessions. The Yeltsin period, as partnership through submission. Putin wants a partnership built on competition. From the Soviet collapse through the end of Putin's first term in office, analysts said, Russia could do little more than complain as NATO expanded into Eastern Europe and the Baltic nations, and Western influence grew across the states of the former U.S.S.R. That changed following Putin's re-election in March 2004.

This time, under Putin II, they are resisting that openly and firmly, Trenin said.Neither has Russia, as many hoped, adopted Europe's political and social norms in particular, a commitment to political pluralism. That is not happening, he said. Russia is not going down the path of Europeanization.

Moscow's new aggressive posture abroad, many foreign analysts agree, is possible partly because of the perception that U.S. global influence has been weakened by the Iraq war. It's also due to the growing confidence that Russia has from its robust trillion-dollar, oil-fueled economy, which has averaged 6.7 percent annual growth since the disastrous financial crisis of 1998. Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Ukrainian prime minister who is now a pro-Western opposition leader, says in an article in the current edition of the influential journal Foreign Affairs that joint action is required by the West to blunt Moscow's imperial ambitions.

The Russia that emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day 1991 came with borders that reflect no historical precedent, Tymoshenko wrote. Accordingly, Russia is devoting much of its energy to restoring political influence in, if not control of, its lost empire. The Russian Foreign Ministry on April 16 took the extraordinary step of responding directly to Tymoshenko's article, denouncing it as a kind of anti-Russian manifesto and an attempt to once again draw dividing lines in Europe and return the world as a minimum into the Cold War atmosphere.Douglas Birch is The Associated Press bureau chief in Moscow.

Turks protest Islamic-rooted government BENJAMIN HARVEY, Associated Press Writer APR 29,07

ISTANBUL, Turkey - At least 300,000 Turks waving the red national flag flooded central Istanbul on Sunday to demand the resignation of the government, saying the Islamic roots of Turkey's leaders threatened to destroy the country's modern foundations. Like the protesters who gathered for the second large anti-government demonstration in two weeks Turkey's powerful secular military has accused Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of tolerating radical Islamic circles. They want to drag Turkey to the dark ages, said 63-year-old Ahmet Yurdakul, a retired government employee who attended the protest.

More than 300,000 people took part in a similar rally in Ankara two weeks ago.

Sunday's demonstration was organized more than a week ago, but it came a day after Erdogan's government rejected the military's warning about the disputed presidential election and called it interference that is unacceptable in a democracy. The ruling party candidate, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, failed to win a first-round victory Friday in a parliamentary presidential vote marked by tensions between secularists and the pro-Islamic government. Most opposition legislators boycotted the vote and challenged its validity in the Constitutional Court. The military said Friday night that it was gravely concerned and indicated it was willing to become more openly involved in the process a statement some interpreted as an ultimatum to the government to rein in officials who promote Islamic initiatives.Sunday's crowd chanted that the presidential palace was closed to imams. Some said Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc was an enemy of the secular system, because he said the next president should be pious. In the 1920s, with the Ottoman Empire in ruins, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk imposed Western laws, replaced Arabic script with the Latin alphabet, banned Islamic dress and granted women the right to vote.

The ruling party, however, has supported religious schools and tried to lift the ban on Islamic head scarves in public offices and schools. Secularists are also uncomfortable with the idea of Gul's wife, Hayrunisa, being in the presidential palace because she wears the traditional Muslim head scarf. We don't want a covered woman in Ataturk's presidential palace, said Ayse Bari, a 67-year-old housewife. We want civilized, modern people there. The military, one of the most respected institutions in Turkey, regards itself as the guardian of the secular system and has staged three coups since 1960.Neither Sharia, nor coup but fully democratic Turkey, read a banner carried by a demonstrator on Sunday.
