Report: 2.2 million Iraqis displaced by Islamic State group-Associated Press-may 6,15-yahoonews

BEIRUT (AP) — Conflicts and violence worldwide displaced a record 38 million people in 2014, with 2.2 million Iraqis alone forced to flee the Islamic State group, a Norwegian humanitarian group report released Wednesday revealed.The findings of the study carried out by the Norwegian Refugee Council's Internal Displacement Monitoring Center are endorsed by the United Nations refugee agency.In a joint statement, they said 11 million were newly displaced last year — mostly because of conflicts in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Intense fighting followed between the Sunni militants and Iraqi troops, Kurdish fighters and Shiite militiamen.Syria has the highest number of internally displaced, with 7.6 million dislodged because of their country's civil war, now in its fifth year. That's 35 percent of the population. In 2014, at least 1.1 million Syrians were newly displaced. Islamic State militants in Libya crucified three brothers of a local family after suspicions arose that they were supporting the local Libyan government, which under ISIS law is equivalent to apostasy.The militants hung the three brothers on crosses and were left out for public viewing for about five hours. A photo circulated last week showing the brothers being crucified in the coastal town of Derna, Libya, after they refused to turn over their brother who was accused of supporting the Libyan Army.The Islamic State has been attempting to coerce the town’s residents into joining their military ranks as part of their efforts to overtake the Libyan National Army. ISIS has advertised an upcoming lecture entitled “The Start of the End” in town, in order to convince non-believers to submit to their cause and join their ranks. battered_woman Honor violence is a “huge problem” in the United States and other Western nations, and President Obama needs to join the fight to put an end to it, according to prominent women’s rights activist Jasvinder Sanghera, who is a victim of honor violence herself.Honor violence occurs when strict adherents to some faiths determine female family members have shamed them in various ways, ranging from an affinity for Western clothes and culture to dating Westerners and rejecting arranged marriage proposals.The violence can range from murder to being disowned by one’s family. The custom is more common in the Middle East and South Asia in connection with the tenets of Islam, Sikhism and other faiths. But as those populations migrate into the Western world, the scourge of honor violence comes with them.“It’s a huge problem, certainly in the U.K., certainly in America,” said Sanghera, who is also featured in the widely circulated film, “Honor Diaries.”She said there is a steep learning curve about honor violence in this country.“Here in America, I’ve already met victim survivors who are saying that America is not accepting this as an issue,” Sanghera said. “The problem here is heavily effected by the fact that you’re not even looking at it. There is no level of awareness or even an acceptance that this is an issue for American citizens, which it clearly is.”Sanghera was born into a Sikh family in Great Britain and watched as multiple sisters consented to arranged marriages without ever having met their prospective husbands. One of them ultimately took her own life.

She chose a different course.

“I was 14 years old when my mother sat me down and presented me a photograph of the man,” she said. “I was to learn I was promised from the age of eight. I was the one who said, ‘No, I am not marrying a stranger.’ I was born in England. I wanted to go to college.”Eventually, Sanghera’s family presented her with an ultimatum.“I ran away from home at the age of 16 to make the point I was not marrying a stranger. As a result of that, my family gave me two choices. I either came back and married [to] who they said, or I was now dead in their eyes,” she said, noting that she remained firm in her refusal to enter the arranged marriage.Since that time, Sanghera has become a very visible activist in Britain and has been able to help many others facing similar dilemmas.“I launched a help line in 2008,” she said. “Within the first four-and-a-half years, we’ve dealt with 48,000 calls to the help line. The majority are victim callers or repeat victim callers. That’s because we’ve been raising awareness for the past 23 years.”Her cause recently received a major shot in the arm from the British government.“Our prime minister in England (David Cameron) has given full support for a day of remembrance to honor the victims who were murdered in dishonorable killings,” Sanghera said. “These victims are murdered by their family and being shamed for embracing everything that Britain stands for. So we have to honor their memory and use this day as an opportunity to raise awareness.”Great Britain will hold its remembrance day on July 14. Sanghera recently spent several days in the United States trying to raise awareness about honor violence and to convince President Obama to follow Prime Minister Cameron’s lead.“We’ve launched a petition with ‘Honor Diaries,’ petitioning the president to have the same day here in the USA. You’ve got victims here. I know of about 28 American citizens who have been murdered by family members. Who is honoring them?” Sanghera asked.“This is an opportunity to dialogue and raise awareness. It is not going to cost [Obama] any money. We want his heart and mind on this issue. All political parties should sign up for this as they did in the U.K.,” she said.
Whether or not, Obama calls for a day of remembrance for honor violence victims, Sanghera said the American people need to pay attention to a horror that may be happening in their own communities. She said that extends to law enforcement and political figures who often look the other way out of deference to the beliefs and traditions of immigrant communities.“Victims are let down by the fact we’re looked at differently. We’re treated differently,” Sanghera said. “We have to train police officers. We are now training police officers in the U.K. Sadly, that isn’t the case here in the states.”On the international stage, Sanghera endorses Western governments demanding better treatment of women by governments in nations that endorse honor violence and using diplomatic and financial tools to do it.“There’s more than enough reason to have that debate with those countries. Otherwise, how are we going to shift attitudes,” she said. “We need to ask them for their sense on this. If it is not good enough, we need to get them uncomfortable and tell them this is out point of view.”Sanghera eventually left Sikhism and is now a Christian. She does not believe her faith makes her more or less passionate about the issue of honor violence, but she does believe it helped her deal with a painful personal history.“I actually became an atheist, and then later on in my own life I became a Christian,” Sanghera said. “It was a personal journey, a spiritual journey, and I had a lot of people to forgive. Report: Germanwings crash co-pilot tried descent previously-Associated Press-MAY 6,15-YAHOONEWS

PARIS (AP) — The co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 appeared to have practiced a controlled descent on his flight into Barcelona just two hours before he intentionally crashed the A320 jet into a mountainside on the return flight to Duesseldorf, air accident investigators said Wednesday.Authorities are still puzzling over why co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, who had suffered from suicidal tendencies and depression in the past, sent the Barcelona-to-Duesseldorf flight straight into the French Alps on March 24, killing all 150 people on board.This latest development about an earlier flight appears to support the assumption that the crash was not only deliberate but also premeditated, and raises questions about all of the flights where Lubitz was in the cockpit.Lubitz seemed to be toying with the plane's settings on a March 24 flight from Duesseldorf to Barcelona, programming it for sharp descent multiple times in a 4 1/2-minute period while the pilot was out of the cockpit before resetting the controls, France's BEA investigation agency said in an interim report on the crash.Prosecutors have said that Lubitz intentionally locked the pilot out of the cockpit and crashed the plane on its return flight to Duesseldorf.Wednesday's 30-page report said the same crew was aboard both flights — and the pilot appeared to have left the cockpit during the earlier flight as well, for about 4 ½ minutes.On the first flight into Barcelona, shortly after the pilot left, the "selected altitude" of the flight changed repeatedly, including several times being set as low as 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground. The report says co-pilot Lubitz also put the engines on idle, which gives the plane the ability to quickly descend.It would be highly unusual for a pilot to repeatedly set a plane for such a low altitude for no apparent reason. However, the report says that Lubitz did so while he was being asked by air traffic controllers to bring the plane down gradually from 35,000 feet to 21,000 feet for its scheduled descent to Barcelona.A chart released by the BEA showed the plane didn't actually descend sharply while Lubitz was repeatedly adjusting the settings, so the passengers and crew might not have noticed any change. The BEA report did not make it clear whether all the steps needed for the repeated descents were taken by Lubitz."The captain didn't realize at all, because the co-pilot's tests during the outgoing flight took place during a normal, preprogrammed descent and it never had an impact on the plane's trajectory," said Remi Jouty, the director of BEA.Aviation experts said the findings were clearly unusual."The process of going up and down with the selected altitude is not normal — but I can't tell you what was going on in his head," said Antoine Amar, a top official in France's main pilots union SNPL and an Air France pilot who has flown the A320, the same type of plane in the Germanwings crash.Germanwings' parent company Lufthansa technically could have known about Lubitz' apparent rehearsal on the outbound flight, but only if it had looked at the flight data in the short period while the plane was unloading and loading passengers in Barcelona.Germanwings said it "welcomed any new information that can help clarify what happened" but said it would not comment on the BEA report because of the ongoing investigation. It would also not comment on whether other flights involving Lubitz were now under review. The airline referred all questions to French prosecutors and the French civil aviation authority. Amar, the French union official, suggested there was little that air authorities could have done between the two flight legs. Authorities would need access to the cockpit recorders and the data downloaded to know whether Lubitz had repeatedly chosen a 100-foot altitude during the flight.Duesseldorf prosecutors who are investigating the co-pilot said they don't know if any passengers on the first flight into Barcelona were even questioned.Lufthansa spokesman Helmut Tolksdorf said Wednesday by phone that the airline had not yet had time to analyze the new details released by the French authorities and planned no immediate comment. The BEA report didn't analyze why Lubitz repeatedly tried to descend the plane going into Barcelona and did not say if it would be looking into other flights where Lubitz was in the cockpit. However, the agency said it is continuing to look at the "systemic failings that may have led to this accident or similar events."The investigators are focusing on "the current balance between medical confidentiality and flight safety," a reference to whether German rules on patient privacy may have prevented Lufthansa from being fully aware of Lubitz' mental health issues.The BEA said investigators are also looking at "compromises"  made on security after the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S., notably on cockpit door locking systems meant to protect pilots from terrorists. Since the Germanwings crash, several airlines have imposed rules requiring two people in the cockpit at all times.French prosecutors are conducting a separate criminal investigation into the crash.It remains unclear why Lubitz would have wanted to crash the plane. (Reuters) - California water regulators on Tuesday adopted the state's first rules for mandatory cutbacks in urban water use as the region's catastrophic drought enters its fourth year.The emergency regulations, which require some communities to trim water use by as much as 36 percent, were approved unanimously late Tuesday by the State Water Resources Control Board weeks after Democratic Governor Jerry Brown stood in a drying mountain meadow and ordered statewide rationing."This is a community crisis," said water resources board chair Felicia Marcus as testimony began in a daylong hearing on the rules on Tuesday. While Holder met with many people, including Brown's parents, he did not visit the police station.Lynch first met with Gray's family and then the police."Thanks to all of you," she told the policemen, "I'm looking at the hardest working police officers in America."Police unions and law enforcement officers who have worked with Lynch said this outreach in Baltimore was characteristic of a different style from Holder's."We are optimistic that we've hit the ground positively and we have every hope that it will stay that way," said Jim Pasco, executive director of the national Fraternal Order of Police.Pasco said that while he respected Holder, he often disagreed with him. (Reuters) - Baltimore officials asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate its police department for civil rights violations after the death of a black man from injuries sustained in police custody, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said on Wednesday.The review will look into police practices such as frisks, street stops of suspects and arrests to see if they violate the U.S. Constitution, Rawlings-Blake said at a news conference. The request follows the April 19 death of Freddie Gray, 25, who sustained spinal injuries after being arrested by police. His death sparked protests and a day of arson and looting in the largely black city."We cannot be timid in addressing this problem and I am a mayor that does not shy away from our city's big challenges," Rawlings-Blake said.Six officers were charged last week in a case that is the latest in a series of deaths in the United States of unarmed black men involving police officers.The mayor said the city would seek to have its 3,200-member police department equipped with body cameras by the end of the year. Tens of thousands of young women from regions devastated by the earthquake in Nepal are being targeted by human traffickers supplying a network of brothels across south Asia, campaigners in Kathmandu and affected areas say.The 7.8-magnitude quake, which killed more than 7,000 people, has devastated poor rural communities, with hundreds of thousands losing their homes and possessions. Girls and young women in these communities have long been targeted by traffickers, who abduct them and force them into sex work.The UN and local NGOs estimate 12,000 to 15,000 girls a year are trafficked from Nepal. Some are taken overseas, to South Korea and as far as South Africa. But the majority end up in Indian brothels where tens of thousands are working in appalling conditions.“This is the time when the brokers go in the name of relief to kidnap or lure women. We are distributing assistance to make people aware that someone might come to lure them,” said Sunita Danuwar, director of Shakti Samuha, an NGO in Kathmandu. “We are getting reports of [individuals] pretending to go for rescuing and looking at people.”Senior western aid officials in the Nepalese capital are also concerned. “There is nothing like an emergency when there is chaos for opportunities to … traffic more women. There is a great chance that everything that is bad happening in Nepal could scale up,” said one.Sita, 20, told the Guardian how she had been taken from her village in Sindhupalchok, the hill area north of Kathmandu, to the Indian border town of Siliguri where she was sold to a brothel owner, repeatedly beaten, systematically raped by hundreds of men and infected with HIV. “I do not have nightmares about my time there. I have erased it from my memory,” she said.Last month’s quake killed more than 3,000 people in Sindhupalchok, and left hundreds of thousands homeless.“The earthquake will definitely increase the risk of abuse,” said Rashmita Shashtra, a local healthworker. “People here are now desperate and will take any chance. There are spotters in the villages who convince family members and local brokers who do the deal. We know who they are.”Sita, who was rescued last year, was taken by an uncle “for a job” in India. Her parents, who are subsistence farmers and illiterate, believed assurances she would have a good job and be able to send back her wages.In the brothel in Siliguri, Sita was forced to have unprotected sex with up to 20 or 30 men a day, seven days a week for a year. When the premises was raided by police, she told officials she wanted to return home and was handed over to an NGO.“I am worried now for the other girls who might be taken away. They will need the money and be tempted if someone talks to them about a job. Then the same thing will happen to them as happened to me,” Sita said.Nepal, one of the poorest countries in Asia, is the focal point of well organised smuggling networks dealing in everything from tiger skins to precious woods, from narcotics to people.Danuwar said most of these criminal networks were based in India, which made identification of traffickers difficult. The gangs have representatives and agents looking for suitable women across Nepal, but particularly in deprived rural areas such as Sindhupalchowk.Many local agents do not know the eventual destination of the women, with some genuinely believing they will find well-paid work in Kathmandu or India. Others are well aware of the real nature of their “jobs”. One ruse is to promise marriage to wealthy foreigners.Kathmandu also has hundreds of bars and massage parlours where women work in poor conditions, with many compelled to have sex with clients. These women are recruited locally, again often in zones hit hard by the quake. “Now [after the earthquake] it is going to be easy for brokers,” said Danuwar.The US State Department has said the Nepalese government does not comply “with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking” but “ is making significant efforts to do so”.The uncle who abducted Sita was murdered by a contract killer. Her parents remain unaware of exactly what happened to her, though her brothers have found out. They have now disowned her. Victims of sexual violence are frequently ostracised in south Asia, where they are seen as having brought shame on their community.Sita lives in a secret shelter run by Shakti Samuha. She does not know what has happened to her parents in the earthquake. For many days, communications to her remote village were cut. When she managed to get a line through to a brother, he refused to acknowledge her. “He said he had no sister and I had called a wrong number,” Sita said.

Rescuers step up hunt for bodies in quake-hit Nepal trekking village-Reuters-may 6,15-yahoonews

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepalese soldiers and villagers dug through snow mounds in a remote hamlet on Wednesday in search of scores of bodies of villagers and trekkers believed to be buried in an avalanche set off by last month's devastating earthquake, officials said.The death toll from the April 25 quake in the Himalayan mountain nation has reached 7,675, with more than 16,300 people injured, the government said.
As rescuers hunted for more than 180 bodies in the village of Langtang, 60 km (37 miles) north of the capital Kathmandu, seven bodies including of that of a German trekker were recovered at Manaslu, another climbing site.The earthquake and subsequent landslides swept away trekking trails in both Langtang and Manaslu.On Wednesday, bad weather prevented the use of helicopters in support of rescue efforts in Langtang, which is on a Himalayan trekking route popular with Westerners. More than 13,000 foreign hikers visit the area annually."We don't know exactly how many people were in Langtang village at the time of disaster," said Uddhav Bhattarai, a local government official told Reuters. "More than three dozen workers at a nearby hydroelectric project are also unaccounted for. In a first, a Saudi Arabian passenger plane landed at Ben Gurion Airport Tuesday night for technical maintenance.The aircraft, an Airbus A330, arrived from Brussels with no passengers on board, according to a report in Ynet news Wednesday.The aircraft is owned by a European company and leased to Saudia — Saudi Arabia’s government-owned national airline.As per the directions of the company, the plane landed in Israel for routine upkeep by Bedek, an Israeli company contracted by Israel Aircraft Industries.An IAI spokesperson confirmed the plane’s arrival and said that the “ongoing and routine maintenance” of the Airbus passenger plane was part of the services Ben Gurion provided to the aircraft manufacturer.Like most Arab countries, Saudi Arabia does not officially recognize Israel, and there are no direct or indirect flights between the two countries.

The Iranian navy is claiming to have chased off a US warship and several American aircraft, in the latest aggressive move by the Islamic Republic's military.According to the semi-official Fars News Agency, 2 US reconnaissance planes and US Navy destroyer DDG81 "rapidly changed direction" on Monday, after being confronted by an Iranian fleet in the Gulf of Aden, south of Yemen.The Iranian Destroyer "Alborz", part of Iran's 34th fleet, sent a warning to the US vessels telling them to turn around after the Americans strayed into the "5-mile standard distance" from the Iranian fleet, Fars claimed.Iran has released video footage of the incident:"Checking foreign warships in the international waters and surveilling potential threats to Iran's national interests is our essential responsibility," the commander of the 34th flotilla of warships, Commodore Mostafa Tajeddini, said on Tuesday.The Iranian 34th fleet is conducting an "anti-piracy" patrol off the coast of Yemen, according to Tehran.But the US and others claim Iran is using its military assets in the region to back Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, and the US Navy has been deployed off the coast of the war-torn country to prevent the transfer of weapons from Iran to the Houthis.However, Iran denies claims its operations in the region have been altered at all by the US deployment."The news report by the foreign media that we have changed our route after the US fleet's arrival is only a media ballyhoo," Tajeddini said.

A senior Iranian cleric claims that US Secretary of State John Kerry told Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif that he "wished the US had a leader like Iran's supreme leader" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in comments made during the negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.The cleric, Ayatollah Alam al-Hoda who is a senior member of the powerful Assembly of Experts, made the remark during Muslim prayer services last Friday, reports the Farsi-language state-run Asriran news site.A senior US administration official responded to the statement, telling the Washington Free Beacon that the claim is "patently absurd."Al-Hoda didn't stop there however, going on to claim that "both Republicans and Democrats want these negotiations with Iran, but they fight each other for partisan interests. The Likud party agreed to appoint MK Ayelet Shaked as justice minister Wednesday in a bid to bring her Jewish Home party into the coalition, but negotiations snagged after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu imposed limitations on her power in the position.The move was meant to pave the way for Netanyahu to garner the 61 seats he needs for his governing coalition, ahead of a midnight deadline to present his government.However, in making the offer Likud also attempted to clip Shaked’s wings, insisting that she not be able to appoint religious court judges and that she also not chair the Israeli Judicial Committee, the body that appoints judges for the law courts, Hebrew-language news sites reported.Instead, a Likud minister would head the religious court judges appointment panel, with Shaked, who is nonreligious, and a representative from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party also having their say. The religious courts handle, among other things, matters of marriage and divorce.Jewish Home indicated, though, that without Shaked retaining leadership of the judicial committee for the law courts, the party will not sign a coalition deal.Further complicating the negotiations, Housing Minister Uri Ariel reportedly demanded from Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett that he be given the Justice Ministry instead, under pain of him and another two MKs leaving the coalition, which would leave Netanyahu shy of his needed majority, Army Radio reported.
Likud had been loath to give Jewish Home the Justice Ministry, fearing it would use the position to push through controversial reforms weakening the Supreme Court and changing the makeup of the panel that chooses new justices.Likud officials told Haaretz that there were two problems with giving the Justice Ministry to Jewish Home.“The first is that the justice minister will soon have to decide on who the next attorney general will be,” one official said. “It’s a very sensitive position, and Netanyahu has no desire to entrust that task to Bennett or Shaked. The second problem is that Shaked is spearheading the battle to change the face of the Supreme Court. Moscow (AFP) - Russia is pulling out all the stops for celebrations on Saturday marking the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany with 16,000 troops marching in a Red Square parade, along with hundreds of units of military hardware.In a defiant show of military strength despite international condemnation over its actions in Ukraine, Russia will roll out new Koalitsiya-SV howitzers as well as cutting-edge Armata T-14 tanks for the first time.The Armata tanks are only set to go into service in 2016 but Russia is already boasting they will be the most powerful in the world.All in all, 194 units of military hardware and 143 planes and helicopters will take part in the parade.Even the weather is not left up to chance.Early Saturday, planes will seed rain clouds with chemicals such as silver iodide in a bid to prevent them bursting over central Moscow during the morning parade.Russia says this method of warding off rain does not damage the environment. It plans to spend a record 400 million rubles ($7.77 million) this year to ensure that major national holidays are drizzle-free.Although Moscow invited 68 heads of state and leaders of international organisations, only around 20 have confirmed their attendance, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Cuban President Raul Castro. UN chief Ban Ki-moon is also expected to attend the Victory Day events.More than 1,300 foreign troops, including Serbs, Indians and Chinese, will participate in the parade.The event's logo showing a white dove on a blue background with the slogan "Victory! 70 years!" is splashed over a giant banner on Red Square measuring 3,300 square metres.Around the city, billboards show images of wartime commanders and joyful faces of members of the public on Victory Day.The orange-and-black St George's ribbon, a symbol of patriotism which Russians wear to commemorate the WWII victory, is also a key element of the decorative scheme.The Moscow metro, famed for its chandeliers and mosaics, is running a special "Victory Train", whose carriages are lined with photographs of the war.Even the street lighting along the banks of the Moscow River has been changed to resemble that used during spring 1945 celebrations.
