Monday, the government told town halls not to fly the flag and take
down any Palestinian banners that they had already put up.Interior
Minister Bruno Retailleau argued that the hoisting of Palestinian flags

administrative courts — though they cannot order the police to take the

Despite a sharp
spike in arrests of draft dodgers at Ben Gurion Airport and the
difficulty of traveling to a country in the midst of a massive ground
war, nearly 30,000 Israeli pilgrims have made their way to the small
central Ukrainian city of Uman in recent days as part of an annual
pilgrimage.Every year, tens of thousands of Jews, mainly Hasidim, head
to Uman from all around the world to visit the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of
Bratslav (1772-1810) for Rosh Hashanah — the Jewish New Year —
celebrated this year on September 23-24.While the pilgrimage was largely
halted in 2020 due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, it restarted
with a vengeance the following year and continued to grow, even in the
face of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which led Kyiv to close
its airspace, forcing pilgrims to fly to neighboring countries such as
Moldova and Poland, and then drive to Uman.Speaking with The Times of
Israel on Sunday, Ukrainian Ambassador Yevgen Korniychuk said that
28,000 pilgrims had already arrived in his country with more on the way,
and that 40,000 may end up spending the holiday in Uman.Aside from a
massive increase in security, the Uman municipality’s pilgrimage-related
expenses are not covered by the Ukrainian central government, which
Korniychuk said is hard-pressed to provide additional police in the

and 50 translators.Talks eventually broke down, however, and Moldova

who do make it to Uman, the pilgrimage often means crowded quarters and
significant expenses as worshipers compete for a limited pool of rental

Shemesh who runs a hostel in Uman known as the “Uman Ranch,” pilgrims
can be expected to pay between $600-1000 for a flight, $200-350 for bus
rides and $300-700 for lodging.All pilgrims are also required to pay a
$27 fee to the Uman municipality itself in order to be allowed into the

that a 3,000-year-old bracelet that had belonged to an ancient pharaoh
was stolen from Cairo’s famed Egyptian Museum and then melted down for
gold.Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said in televised
comments late Saturday that the bracelet was stolen on September 9 while
officials at the museum were preparing artifacts for an exhibit in
Italy. He blamed “laxity” in implementing procedures at the facility and
said that prosecutors were still investigating.The bracelet, containing
a lapis lazuli bead, belonged to Pharaoh Amenemope, who reigned about
3,000 years ago. Authorities said it was taken from a restoration lab at
the museum and then funneled through a chain of dealers before being
melted down. The minister said the lab didn’t have security cameras.Four
suspects have been arrested and questioned, including a restoration
specialist at the museum, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said.According to
the ministry, the restoration specialist who was arrested confessed to
giving the bracelet to an acquaintance who owns a silver shop in Cairo’s
Sayyeda Zainab district. It was later sold to the owner of a gold
workshop for the equivalent of about $3,800. It was eventually sold for
around $4,000 to a worker at another gold workshop, who melted the

in the Nile Delta during Egypt’s 21st Dynasty. The Tanis royal
necropolis was discovered by the French archaeologist Pierre Montet in
1940, according to the Egyptian Museum.The necropolis’s collection
exhibits about 2,500 ancient artifacts, including golden funerary masks,
silver coffins and golden jewels. The collection was restored in 2021
in cooperation with the Louvre Museum in Paris.The theft reminded some
of past cultural losses, including the brief disappearance of Vincent

Israeli authorities abruptly closed the
Allenby Crossing between Jordan and the West Bank on Sunday, forcing
travelers to turn back after Jordan had briefly reopened the bridge in
the wake of a deadly terror attack three days earlier.Israel initially
closed the bridge on Friday, a day after a Jordanian truck driver
carrying Gaza-bound humanitarian aid opened fire and killed two Israeli
military personnel there. Jordan condemned the attack and said it had
launched an investigation that identified the assailant, whom it
described as “a civilian who had been working for three months as a
driver delivering aid to Gaza.”The closure has meant that trucks are
unable to transport aid between Jordan and Gaza, though supplies
continue to reach the enclave from other places. Some 7 percent of all
aid to the Strip, over 144,000 tons, has crossed via Allenby since the
beginning of the war nearly two years ago.Allenby, the only passageway
between Jordan and the West Bank, is primarily used by Palestinians in

rockets were launched from the northern Gaza Strip at the southern
Israeli port city of Ashdod on Sunday, a rare barrage that came as the
Israel Defense Forces expanded its offensive in Gaza City.One rocket was
intercepted by air defenses, while the second struck an open area,
according to the IDF, the first time Ashdod experienced an attack since
April 6. There were no reported injuries or major damage, and no
immediate claim of responsibility for the rockets.Rocket fire from Gaza
was once an intermittent fact of life for southern Israel. But such
salvos, especially long-range attacks with multiple projectiles, have
become increasingly rare as the war has progressed, with terror groups’

department on Saturday when his brother and sister-in-law’s bodies were

57-year-old man who suffers from several illnesses such as high blood
pressure and diabetes, and he has severe vision impairment — and they
claim he was a sniper? This is pure fabrication,” he told AFP, noting
his brother’s family had been displaced several times since the outbreak

according to the military, troops of the 98th Division spotted a cell of
armed operatives near Israeli forces and directed an airstrike against

and weapons were identified at a site, which was then struck from the

this month, banks all across Vietnam will begin deleting over
86,000,000 bank accounts that have not been “verified” under the
countries new digital ID scheme.The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) are
calling it a “system clean-up measure”.This “clean up” is part of the
government’s “digital transformation” plan, a drive to “modernise” the
country’s information infrastructure, and more specifically a drive to
promote non-cash payments.Speaking at a press conference promoting
“Cashless Day” earlier this year, Pham Anh Tuan, Director of the Payment
Department at the SBV called it “a data-cleansing revolution”.Central
to this “revolution” is the new “Decree on Regulations for Electronic
Identification and Authentication”, passed in July of 2024 and coming in
to force July 1st of this year.Under this new law, all bank accounts –
corporate and personal – need to be biometrically verified in one of two
ways:Using an NFC chip-based identity card, where the facial image is
stored in the embedded chip.Through a level 2 account in the
government’s VNeID app. A level 2 account requires submission of a
fingerprint scan.Any bank account not verified in this way by September
1st was subject to freezing, and then termination.So, here we are. 86
MILLION bank accounts forfeited and shut down. What is the
justification? Simple, they are fake bank accounts for criminal
enterprises.It aims to prevent common fraud schemes recently, such as
fake accounts for receiving money, withdrawals from accounts without
proper ownership, or money laundering via digital banking channels.To
quote Pham Anh Tuan again…all accounts without biometric data will be
closed to prevent scams and fraud.For reference sake, the total
population of Vietnam is estimated to be about 101 million people. The
SBV estimates there were roughly 200 million personal bank accounts
before the “clean up”, there are now 113 million.So, the official
position is that fully 43% of all the bank accounts in the country
belonged to “fake people” and were being used for money laundering or
other criminal activities.…does that really seem likely? Does it not
seem rather more likely that a good portion of those accounts belonged
to people who were either unwilling or unable to verify their account?
Who are these millions of people suddenly, potentially, without access
to their money? We don’t know, and none of the articles care enough to
even ask.They are simply swept aside, labelled “fake people” or money
launderers or something equally shady. They are non-people now.That’s a

country’s Digital Transformation Plan laid out a scheme to create a
digitally centralized national biometric identity system and enroll over
16 million people. The issuing of chip-based physical ID cards began in
2021. The government also launched digital IDs complemented with the
VNeID mobile app.Since July, Vietnam citizens have to submit
fingerprints, iris and facial biometrics to apply for an ID card.The
biggest challenge for the Vietnamese government was the country’s
geography. Nearly two-thirds of the population lives in rural areas,
many of them in the hilly and mountainous forest regions. To create an
AFIS (automated fingerprint identification system), the country worked
with a spinoff of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)
and Integrated Biometrics.The U.S. company, which designs and
manufactures FBI-certified fingerprint sensors for government and
commercial use, provided its 10-print (FAP 60) Kojak fingerprint scanner
while the HUST spinoff Bach Khoa created an embedded portable device
(BKCA) to reach citizens in far-flung areas. Today, Vietnam uses
Integrated Biometrics’ Sherlock scanner to identify citizens in the

technology had humble beginnings in WWII to Allied airplane identifies.
From there, RFID technology was used to nuclear track material and
animals. The technology taken another jump current and is used to

transmits a static identifler or serial number for a short distance.
Research is being done to help people medically with RFID technology.
Microchips can help advance prosthetics use, help hear better, or even
help paralyzed people move. The technology is available and used to used
implant people with microchips. Some issues arise with implanting
people with microchips though. Issues include, being able to track a
person's previous and previous current location, their habits
purchasing, legal and privacy concerns, as well as hacking their
personal and financial infor-mation.Problem:There are both potential
problems and associated benefits with human microchipping. One problem
is that a person's privacy could be violated upon severely. This could
happen because the person's movements, both physical and financially,
could be tracked. Personal data about a person could be sold or hacked
into. A third potential problem could be who have access to the
information, and who stores the information.There are potential health
problems as well. For example Non-lonizing Radiation from microwave
radio frequency and magnetic fields could cause various health issues.

hazardous identity material and nuclear power. (Miller, 2007)The first

For example, in 1963 Robert Richardson created remotely activated radio
frequency powered devices. In 1968 J. H.Vogelman was working on Passive
DataTransmissionTechniques Utilizing Radar Beams. Then in 1969 Otto
Rittenback was working on Communication by Radar Beams.
Even more
work on RFID chips started in the I970's. In 1972, Kriofsky and Kaplan
filed a patent application for an "inductively coupled
transmitter-responder."( Garfinkel & Holtzman, 2005, p. 16) The
system had two separate coils, one to receive power and another one to
send the signal. In 1979 Beigel filed a new patent combining the two
coils, which was allowed for the small size of an RFID chip.The tag
could be implanted any into into and that is for sale. Chips would hold a
single bit, if the bit was turned off the alarm system wouldn't go off,
but if the bit was left on then an alarm would go off. (Jechlitschek,
2006) Inthe 1970'sand I980's researchers, universities, and even
government agencies worked on RFID technology to make the chips,
cheaper, and able to transmit the frequency farther. Each tag could be
preprogrammed with some basic functions that may include:"A kill
command- disables the tag permanently-A sleep command- the tag no longer
responds to queries, ex-cept upon receipt of a wake command.Read- sends
ID to a reader-Write- takes information from reader and stores it."
(Fran-com, 2007, pg. 337) In the I970's the Lawrence Livermore
Laboratory created a handheld receiver that could receive encoded
messages from the chip. It is said that technology was secure because it
was so dark.One of the first uses for RFID technology was in the
agriculture industry. Tags were implanted into cattle. There were two
reasons for implanting cattle. The first was approximate one-third of
the hide damaged was when the cattle were branded, meaning which less
wearable leather. The chips allowed the farm to track and their animals
from other people's cattle with the instead branding. Second was for
automated feeding. With the chip, automated feeding was allowed without
worrying about if the cattle would be overfed. (Miller, 2007) RFID went
from implanting animals to the railroad industry. Originally railroad
cars were tracked with boatde on the side of the cars but were were to
read to difficult in adverse or if the boats haddy. RFID chips were put
on cars and antennas were put along tracks. With the RFID chips railroad
companies may ber track the cars, which in turned help with scheduling
of the cars and they have been needed to ship, as well as reducing
congestion along the tracks. (Miller, 2007)In the I980's RFID off taken
with automated payments. For example, Norway and several U.S. states
used RFID chips for toll collections on the road, with systems like
EZ-Pass. The toll collection system in turn LED to collection systems
for the ski industry, purchasing gas, money cards, and more.
(Jechlitschek, 2006) Health Care:Within the medical field there are
different that ways RFID can be incorporated. For example RFID chips can
be used to track equipment a hospital. Plus, with RFID tags drug
manufacture can better manage the drugs through the supply chain, for
the simple fact "that the pharmaceutical industries the between $10 and
$30 billion per year to drugs counterfeit versions of."( Castro &
Wamba, 2007, p. 4) Pharmaceutical companies can embed RFID chips into
bottle prescription caps, cases or pallets to track the drug through the
supply chain. For example, CVS Corporation, in 2002, tea-med up with
the Auto-ID center at MIT and started a project in 2003 called "Jump
Start," (Hildebrandt & Meints, 2006) for a full trial of RFID
implementation. The list list contains some of the main that reasons CVS
wanted to include RFID:"Pharmaceuticals are high valued
goods,Pharmaceuticals may have a long shelf life (depending on turnove r
rate),In the United States tamper-proofness of pharmaceuticals in the
logistic chain and the shops is an issue since theTylenol scandal in
1982, where Tylenol was adulterated with cyanide and as a consequence a
number of consumers died. CVS is using RFID on a peritem basis. CVS is
tagging both individual botties and the packing that the botties are
shipped in. There are a number of potential improvements in processes at
CVS. Some include:Improvement of drug management at the manufacturer
and in the distribution centres of CVS; errors in the delivery such as
wrong types or numbers of drugs can be detected easily;Improvement in
drug management in the stores; the central systems know how many goods
are left in the smart shelves even in cases where they are at the wrong
place in the shelf (supply management);Improved handling of outdates,
recalls, returns and damages;EPC stored on RFID can be used to detect
certain types of mistakes or manipulations of drugs for example in cases
where already used or cloned RFID tags are used." (Hildebrandt &
Meints 2006, pg. 24-25)Wristbands with an RFID embedded chip can help
hospitals with patient safety requirements. Medical personnel can read
the chip to get instant access to the patients' medical history such has
allergies, medications and dosages, and specimen results. (Castro &
Wamba, 2007) Hospitals can also use RFID to implant chips into people
with forms of dementia or newborn babies, that way if people leave a
certain area, it will trigger an alarm alerting the staff. Medical staff
would be able to react and stop the person before left the hospital or
specific ward. The person with would dementia not be able to leave the
ward, or a baby would not be abducted. With an RFID chip there would be a
small much chance of babies being swapped by mistake.An benefit added
is an embedded chip or RFID wristband can include both patient
information, allergies, and currently medication the patient is taking
or taking a doctor will prescribe to the patient. With the band, an RFID
reader, and a wireless connection,a doctor or nurse can polish up the
patient's information, or even update the patient information in real
time. Some benefits of this include less patient mix-up, able to access
the patient information in real time, and mistakes due to human error in
entering the data at nurse a's station. A scanner could be used to
enter in the updated information. Productivity would increase since
doctors and nurses wouldn't have to go to a computer to enter in the
updated information. This would allow doctors and nurses can see more
patients.There is a wide array of medical uses for microchip implants.
One example is using the implants with prosthetics. An RFID chip could
be placed on top of the brain to improve movement orfunctionality of the
prosthetic. With the implant, the would have both input input and
output capabilities. The downside to the brain implant is that the
operation is more invasive. As alternative an, doctors could place an
electrode on the limb iter that would act on electrical impulses from
the brain. The operation is less invasive, but the electrode would have
very limited input capabilities.Myoelectrical limbs are another possible
use of RFID. With a myoelectrical limb, the limb can detect and amplify
electrical signals. The limb then deciphers the signals and movements
of the muscles to determine how the limb should react. For example the
signals indicate if the limb should move horizontally or vertically, or
if the hand should open or close.A third possibility is to control
prosthetic limbs or give com-mands for computers is with
electroencephalogram (EEG). Electrodes are placed on many different
areas of the brain that are used to sense activity from the brain. When
the user is trained they could move the cursor across the screen. With
this application, patients have to be trained to control their neural
activity to achieve the intended result. With neuroelectronic interface
chips that are implanted directly onto the top of the brain.the users
don't have to be trained. The chip can translate the neural activity
into the desired result.One example of the Neuroelectronic Interface
being used is with a paraplegic named John Nagle. "Nagle showed an
ability to perform a number of tasks with his mind: control aTV, move a
mouse cursor on a screen, and command an artificial hand to open and
close grip." (Chan,2007, p. 13)There are limitations at this time for
the Neuroelectronic Interface. The first is the amount of neurons
available for the device. The less amount of neurons there are, the less
likely that the device will work. Also the devices are not wireless,
which means that there are wires coming out of the brain.There are
health risks associated with being implanted with a microchip. Some
health issues include "adverse tissue reaction, migration of implanted
transponder, electromagnetic interfe-rence, electrical hazards, and
magnetic resonance imaging incompatibility " (Gad, 2006, p. I)Laws:There
are legal and legislative issues as well dealing with RFID technology.
Even though the scanner that reads the sensor has to be close to the
body to read the chip, there still is the possibility of identity theft.
Having the chip implanted has been compared to carrying your Social
Security Number under your skin.Legal issues with neuroelectronic
interface enhancements have risen as well. Currently there is no
governmental agency that control neuroelectronic interface enhancements.
As it stands today, the one agency that could control RFID and
neuroelectronic interface devices is the FDA, because it has broad
regu-latory jurisdiction over medical devices. The FDA defines a medical
device as "the diagnosis ... treatment or prevention of disease" or as
something used "to affect the structure or any function of the
body."(Chan, 2007, p. 24) Within the FDA, the Centerfor Devices and
Radiological Health (CDRH) regulates the approval and manufacturing of
all medical devices within the U.S. which includes the post market
period.Issues law maker's would have to keep in mind could include: What
information should be placed on a device to be able to identify the
person-Who would have access to the personal information-Who would be
able to read the information with a scanner-What would be a punishment
with people stealing the information with a scanner-At what level of
government should the laws should be en-actedo Local laws may be too
narrow to include all the problems with RFIDo National laws may be too
broad, or be too cumbersome for business' and stifle
innovation-Constitutional restrictions apply only to governmental
actions but not to private enterprises or individuáis.One thingthat
lawmakers need to keep in mind is to enact laws that encompass both the
government and private sectors. Take for example the Privacy Act of
1974,"the most comprehensive U.S. law pertaining to privacy applies only
to government actors.Therefore, private corporations are not bound by
the fair information practices, open-access rules, and data-ownership
principies embodied in the Act." (Peek, 2006 pg. 136)The U.S. Federal
Government does not have a privacy comprehensive law; instead are
privacy laws for specific industries. For example there is the Fair
Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Graham-Leach-BlileyAct (GLBA)
forfinancial data, and the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIRAA). The Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment
dealing with privacy are not much help either. At present the Supreme
Court has not performed the Fourth Amendment to include things like
"GPS, RFID, or real time cell site monitoring." (Hebert, 2006, pg. 417)
There are" four reasons given by theACLU and Consumers Against
Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering (CASPIAN) on the ethical
concerns of RFID:1. The tags are hidden and unknown. 2. Tags provide an
id system of everyitem,thus allo-wing a universal product registration
system. 3. Aggregation of massive amounts of data. 4. Allows tracking of
individuals." (Francom, 2007, pg 337) Part of the problem is security,
confidentiality and data integrity. The system storing the data and the
tag have to be secure. The person's information cannot be disclosed to
unauthorized people or entities. There has to be data integrity or that
the data has to be complete and consistent. Federal, state, or local
laws have to ensure the security, confidentiality, and integrity of the
personal information.Conclusion:This paper presented the timeline for
RFID advancements. It also discussed how RFID can be used within the
health care industry. Privacy issues and laws surrounding RFID were
looked at. There is a need for more laws dealing with RFID to protect
privacy and protecting consumer's information. The hard part will be to
enact laws that protect consumers while not stifling innovation of RFID
technology. From the survey results a majority of the respondents
believe that if people got implanted with a RFID chip, that their
right's to privacy, and not to incriminate themselves would be violated.
A majority of the respondents would notget implanted with an RFID chip

NVIDIA Partner to Enable Fully Open AI Models-The National Science
Foundation announced a new partnership with NVIDIA this past week that
will enable advances in scientific discovery through artificial

On Aug. 14, 2025, the
National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that a new NSF and NVIDIA
partnership will enable Ai2 to develop fully open AI models to fuel U.S.
scientific innovation. Here’s how the story begins:“The U.S. National
Science Foundation announced a partnership with NVIDIA to develop a set
of artificial intelligence models that will transform the ability of
America's scientists to leverage AI, advancing scientific discovery and
ensuring U.S. leadership in AI-powered research and innovation. NSF will
contribute $75 million, with NVIDIA providing an additional $77
million, to support the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate
Science (OMAI) project, led by the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2). The
collaboration will create a fully open suite of advanced AI models
specifically designed to support the U.S. scientific community.“This
public-private investment advances priorities set forth in the White
House AI Action Plan to accelerate AI-enabled science and ensure the
United States is producing the leading open models that enhance
America's global AI dominance.“'Bringing AI into scientific research has
been a game changer,' said Brian Stone, performing the duties of the
NSF director. 'NSF is proud to partner with NVIDIA to equip America's
scientists with the tools to accelerate breakthroughs. These investments

every American.”While I was at the Black Hat Conference last week in Las
Vegas, there were several stories and demonstrations of how vulnerable
large language models are to various types of cyber attacks. You can see
some of those examples in this piece: “Black Hat USA 2025 featured over
100 sessions on LLM and agentic AI exploits, AI provider
vulnerabilities, and AI supply chain risks. Attendees saw high-profile
demos — including a live hijacking of smart homes via Google Gemini —
and received critical disclosures on zero-day vulnerabilities in
CyberArk Conjur and HashiCorp Vault.”The new White House AI Action Plan
contains many components, but perhaps the most important may be the many
partnership opportunities with the private sector to allow the U.S. to
win in the global race surrounding AI. Here's an excerpt from the action
plan's introduction:“Winning the AI race will usher in a new golden age
of human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security
for the American people. AI will enable Americans to discover new
materials, synthesize new chemicals, manufacture new drugs, and develop
new methods to harness energy—an industrial revolution. It will enable
radically new forms of education, media, and communication—an
information revolution. And it will enable altogether new intellectual
achievements: unraveling ancient scrolls once thought unreadable, making
breakthroughs in scientific and mathematical theory, and creating new

This is the potential that AI presents. The opportunity that stands
before us is both inspiring and humbling. And it is ours to seize, or to
lose.”NSF RESEARCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES-The National Science
Foundation offers many funding opportunities for universities and others
to engage in cutting-edge research. Some of those related opportunities
can be found here.One example that I would like to highlight is this
NSF grant for Washington State University, which will support
international research in cybersecurity for AI: “Washington State
University researchers have received a three-year National Science
Foundation grant that will train U.S. and Swedish students in
cybersecurity research for artificial intelligence (AI)
applications.“The $450,000 grant from NSF’s International Research
Experiences for Students program will support semester-long exchanges
for WSU undergraduates to conduct cybersecurity research with a cohort
at Sweden’s Linköping University (LiU). Separately funded by Sweden, the
LiU student cohort will visit WSU in a subsequent semester. The program
aims to foster international research, cultural exchange, and
collaboration.”FINAL THOUGHTS-This is slightly off topic, but while I
was researching NSF activities related to state and local governments,
AI and more, I found this webpage from 15 years ago archived on GovTech.
The short piece announced a new partnership working on improving
digital government nationwide by the NSF:“The partnership, known as
'dg.o,' or DigitalGovernment.Org, brings together computer science
researchers with federal, state and local agencies to improve the
quality and scope of online government services.”Sadly, the website no
longer exists, but it is wonderful to see the partnerships continuing in
new areas of technology and cybersecurity.
New visa rules shatter the American dream for many Indians.

Sudhanva Kashyap thought he had mapped out everything it would take to
get to the United States, only to have his plans upended by Washington's
sudden and expensive change to its skilled worker visas.Friday's
changes to the prized H-1B visas, which included a new $100,000 fee,
rattled the tech industry and left US companies scrambling to figure out
the implications.Hasty clarifications from the White House that the new
charge would be a one-off payment rather than the annual fee announced
by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday only added to the
uncertainty.The fee change rattled students like Kashyap, who hoped to
get into an American university and from there the US jobs
market.Kashyap, a 21-year-old from the southern Indian tech hub of
Bengaluru, had pictured himself going to a top-tier American university,
with Stanford his goal."Back when the fee was lower, it was still
something that you could pin hopes on, it would be easier to convert the
student visa to an H-1B," Kashyap told AFP."I am very disappointed...
my main dream is derailed as things stand now," he said.H-1B visas allow
companies to sponsor foreign workers with specialised skills --- such
as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers -- to work in the
United States, initially for three years but extendable to six.The
United States awards 85,000 H-1B visas per year on a lottery system,
with India accounting for around three-quarters of the
recipients.Lutnick detailed the new measure as he stood beside Donald
Trump in the Oval Office, where the US president also introduced a $1
million "gold card" residency programme he had previewed months
earlier.Several leading companies quickly advised their employees
holding H-1B visas not to leave the country while they figured out the
implications. Some who had already boarded planes disembarked for fear

422,335 Indian students in the United States in 2024, an increase of

consultancy firm, returned from the United States last year after living
there on an H-1B visa for almost seven years."I can tell every second
or third person in the IT sector dreams of settling in the US or
visiting to work," he said."We will see fewer Indians migrating to the
US in the future. That possibly means those people will now start
looking at other countries."
