Netanyahu
says world should 'wait' for Israeli response-Coalition figures push
West Bank annexation as response to Palestinian state recognition-Hamas
lauds UK, Canada, Australia for recognizing ‘Palestine,’ despite their
insistence it sidelines terror group; opposition leaders blast PM for
not preventing ‘diplomatic disaster’By Lazar Berman,Sam Sokol,Ariela
Karmel,Nava Freiberg and Agencies Today, 10:06 pm-SEP 21,25
Israeli
political figures from both the government and the opposition on Sunday
condemned the decision by the UK, Australia, and Canada to recognize a
Palestinian state, calling the move a reward for terrorism and a threat
to Israel’s security.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies
pledged to respond to the move, and doubled down on their opposition to
the idea of a Palestinian state, with several in his coalition pushing
for West Bank annexation as a response.Leaders of the opposition — while
echoing the premier’s arguments against the step — blamed the premier
for not preventing the “diplomatic disaster.”In making their
announcements Sunday, the UK, Australia, and Canada each argued that
recognizing a State of Palestine would sideline the Hamas terror group,
with which Israel is at war in Gaza, and advance long-term peace between
Israel and the Palestinians. But Netanyahu, in a Hebrew-language video
statement, charged: “I have a clear message to those leaders who
recognize a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre on October 7 —
you are handing a huge reward to terror.”The premier added: “It will
not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the
Jordan.”Netanyahu boasted that under his leadership, Israel “doubled
Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria — and we will continue on this
course,” using a biblical term for the West Bank.“The response to the
recent attempt to force a terrorist state upon us in the heart of our
land will be given after my return from the United States,” said
Netanyahu, who is set to depart for the US later this week to speak at
the UN before meeting with US President Donald Trump. “Wait.”President
Isaac Herzog also condemned the diplomatic decision, saying it “will
only embolden the forces of darkness.”“After the atrocities of October
7, while Hamas continues its campaign of terror, and while it continues
to cruelly hold 48 hostages in the tunnels and dungeons of Gaza, the
recognition of a Palestinian state by some nations today is, not
surprisingly, cheered by Hamas,” he wrote on X.“It will not help one
Palestinian,” Herzog continued. “It won’t help free one hostage, and it
will not help us reach any settlement between Israelis and Palestinians.
It will only embolden the forces of darkness. This is a sad day for
those who seek true peace.”Far-right National Security Minister Itamar
Ben Gvir announced that he will propose annexing the West Bank, as a
response to the Western nations’ move, declaring in a statement: “The
recognition by the UK, Canada, and Australia of a ‘Palestinian’ state as
a prize for the murderous [Hamas] terrorists, requires immediate
countermeasures.”Ben Gvir called for “the immediate application of
sovereignty in Judea and Samaria, and the complete dismantling of the
‘Palestinian’ Authority.” He also announced his plans “to submit a
proposal for the application of sovereignty at the upcoming cabinet
meeting.”Ben Gvir was echoed by his Otzma Yehudit party’s Yitzhak
Wasserlauf, who heads the Negev, Galilee, and National Resilience
Ministry.“The Land of Israel belongs exclusively to the people of Israel
– there is no Palestinian people and no Palestinian state,” Wasserlauf
declared.Likud Transportation Minister Miri Regev tweeted on Sunday
evening: “Sovereignty now! The land of Israel is ours, now and forever.”
Economy Minister Nir Barkat, considered a more moderate member of the
ruling party, wrote on X that Israel’s response should include “the
application of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.”Netanyahu’s office
has in recent days sought to ease the pressure of advancing West Bank
annexation by quietly briefing select Likud lawmakers and ministers, The
Times of Israel has learned. On Sunday, i24 News reported that the
briefings urged participants not to press publicly for “sovereignty
now,” with the PMO warning that “it causes damage, the prime minister
said he knows when and how to act.”The briefings were not given to the
entire Likud faction, the report added, and appear to have had little
effect, as seen by a number of public statements from party lawmakers on
Sunday.PA calls move a necessary step, as Hamas lauds
development-Despite the Western countries’ insistence that recognizing a
Palestinian state would sideline, rather than embolden, Hamas, a senior
official from the terror group hailed the move, describing it as a
victory for the rights of Palestinians.“These developments represent a
victory for Palestinian rights and the justice of our cause, and send a
clear message: no matter how far the occupation goes in its crimes, it
will never be able to erase our national rights,” Mahmud Mardawi told
AFP.The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, welcomed the move, calling it a
necessary step toward peace.PA Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian
Shahin called the recognitions “historic,” telling reporters in
Ramallah. “It is a move bringing us closer to sovereignty and
independence. It might not end the war tomorrow, but it’s a move
forward, which we need to build on and amplify.”PA President Mahmoud
Abbas issued a statement praising Britain’s recognition, and “affirming
that it constitutes an important and necessary step toward achieving a
just and lasting peace in accordance with international
legitimacy.”Opposition leaders blame PM for ‘diplomatic
disaster’Opposition Leader Yair Lapid condemned the statehood
recognitions, but blamed Netanyahu’s government, asserting that a
competent Israeli leadership would have prevented the development.“The
unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state by Britain, Australia, and
Canada is a diplomatic disaster, a harmful step, and a reward for
terror,” Lapid said in a statement.“A functioning Israeli government
could have prevented this through smart and serious work, professional
diplomatic dialogue, and proper public diplomacy. The government that
brought upon us the worst security disaster in our history is now also
bringing upon us the most severe diplomatic crisis ever.”Blue and
White-National Unity chairman Benny Gantz echoed Lapid’s comments,
declaring in a statement that recognizing a Palestinian state after the
October 7 attack “ultimately only emboldens Hamas, extends the war,
distances the prospects of a hostage deal, and sends a clear message of
support to Iran and its proxies.”“If advancing peace & stability in
the Middle East is what you seek, dear Western Leaders – and not
buckling to domestic political pressure, then maximum pressure must be
applied to Hamas to relinquish power and return the hostages before
anything else,” the centrist politician posted on X, in English,
following the Western countries’ announcements. The Democrats chairman
Yair Golan called the statehood recognitions destructive” and “extremely
damaging” to Israel, adding that while he had long supported a
two-state solution to Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians, now was
not the time to move forward with a Palestinian state.“After October 7
and Hamas’s heinous attack, talking about a Palestinian state is
destructive,” Golan said in an interview with 103FM radio. “We should
now be talking about a process centered on separation, with security
responsibility in Israel’s hands, a significant and thorough period
during which Israel ensures that the other side is capable of upholding a
future agreement.”“I spoke with the French Foreign Ministry and tried
to explain how harmful this is to the issues they want to promote,
including solving the Palestinian problem,” Golan added. France has been
leading the campaign for countries to recognize a Palestinian state,
and will, together with Saudi Arabia, lead meetings on a two-state
solution at the UN this week.Golan, like the other opposition leaders,
blamed the recognition on the policies of Netanyahu’s government,
accusing the premier of “ignoring the world” and “creating a modern
Sparta,” referring to highly criticized remarks Netanyahu made last week
in which he admitted that Israel was facing increasing isolation.“If we
had managed this correctly, it could have been handled in a way that
protects Israel and avoids unnecessary risks to national security,” said
Golan. He added, at the same time, that annexing Gaza and its
Palestinian population, as has been floated by the current government,
is impossible: “No country in the world is ready, willing, or interested
in absorbing two million Palestinians.”Arab MKs fume as Golan rejects
talk of Palestinian statehoodArab parties and peace organizations
condemned Golan’s statements, and, endorsing Palestinian statehood,
declared themselves the only remaining representatives of Israel’s
left.Arab-Jewish party Hadash said the Democrats “have become Likud
prior to its partnership with Kahanists” — referring to Netanyahu’s
party, and followers of an extremist, anti-Arab ideology,
respectively.Hadash insisted that peace and shared prosperity can only
come through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state
alongside Israel.“I have great respect for Yair Golan on many of his
positions, but on this issue I am in complete disagreement,” said
Hadash-Ta’al chairman Ayman Odeh.“Why ‘separation’ and not a peace
agreement? Another unilateral disengagement? The only way is full
recognition of the national rights of both peoples, including their
right to self-determination.”Hadash MK Aida Touma-Sliman said Golan’s
remarks show “there is no ‘left’ left in the Knesset beyond
Hadash.“Precisely when many of Golan’s own supporters back the
establishment of a Palestinian state and the advancement of peace, he
himself lacks the vision and leadership to clearly declare the only path
to end occupation, oppression, and destruction,” Touma-Sliman
said.Peace Partnership, a coalition of Israeli and Palestinian groups,
said that Golan’s comments “illustrate exactly the root of the problem:
denial of the Palestinian people’s right to independence and freedom
does not bring security – it deepens the conflict.”Times of Israel staff
contributed to this report.

Arguing
that the move sidelines Hamas and advances peace, the United Kingdom,
Canada, Australia and Portugal all announced on Sunday their formal
recognition of a Palestinian state.“Today, to revive the hope of peace
for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United
Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine,” British Prime
Minister Keir Starmer proudly declared in a video statement. He insisted
that the two-state solution “is not a reward for Hamas, because it means
Hamas can have no future, no role in government, no role in
security.”“Hamas is a brutal terror organization. Our call for a genuine
two-state solution is the exact opposite of their hateful vision,” said
Starmer.Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney proclaimed that the
“current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the
prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established.”And
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that his decision
reflects Canberra’s “longstanding commitment to a two-state solution,
which has always been the only path to enduring peace and security for
the Israeli and the Palestinian peoples.”He stressed that “the terrorist
organization Hamas must have no role in Palestine.”The coordinated
announcements from the three countries came a day before the opening in
New York of the annual United Nations General Assembly, which will
feature a significant focus on the recognition of a Palestinian state
and a two-state solution. Saudi Arabia and France are hosting a summit
on Monday in New York, at which more leaders are set to recognize
Palestinian statehood.Later Sunday, Portugal said it also recognizes a
Palestinian state.“Recognizing the State of Palestine is therefore the
fulfillment of a fundamental, consistent, and widely agreed policy,”
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel told reporters in New
York.“Portugal advocates the two-state solution as the only path to a
just and lasting peace, one that promotes coexistence and peaceful
relations between Israel and Palestine,” he added. As expected, Sunday’s
announcements set off a wave of furious denunciations from across the
Zionist political spectrum in Israel.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
said at his weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday morning, ahead of the
formal announcements, that Israel will respond to calls to establish a
Palestinian state, calling for a “fight” against the move, which he said
would “endanger [Israel’s] existence.”Israel’s response to the
recognition will come after the premier returns from the US next week,
said Netanyahu later on Sunday.“I have a clear message to those leaders
who recognize a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre on October
7 — you are handing a huge reward to terror,” said the prime minister
in a video statement.“It will not happen,” he continued. “A Palestinian
state will not be established west of the Jordan.”Netanyahu boasted that
under his leadership, Israel “doubled Jewish settlement in Judea and
Samaria — and we will continue on this course.”“The response to the
recent attempt to force a terrorist state upon us in the heart of our
land will be given after my return from the United States,” said
Netanyahu. “Wait.”In July, the Knesset voted 71-13 in favor of a
non-binding motion in support of applying sovereignty to the West Bank —
a move firmly backed by the two far-right parties in the coalition.
Netanyahu is believed to be considering annexing part of the West Bank
in response to the moves to recognise Palestinian statehood.Netanyahu is
slated to fly to New York on Wednesday night, and then to Washington to
meet US President Donald Trump next Sunday. He is expected to be back
in Israel by next Wednesday. The recognition of a Palestinian state by
Commonwealth countries “not only rewards the biggest massacre of Jews
since the Holocaust by a terror organization that is calling and acting
for the annihilation of Israel, but also solidifies the support Hamas
enjoys,” said the Foreign Ministry. “Israel will not accept any detached
and imaginary text that attempts to force it to accept indefensible
borders.”Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar charged that the countries “are
taking a step that is not only mistaken, but also outrageous and
immoral.”Calling it a “diplomatic disaster” that a different Israeli
government could have prevented, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid called the
move “a harmful step, and a reward for terror.”Yair Golan, chairman of
the left-wing Democrats party, said recognition is “destructive” and
“extremely damaging” to Israel.Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority
President Mahmoud Abbas praised the move, saying it was “an important
and necessary step toward achieving a just and lasting peace in
accordance with international legitimacy.”The Hostages and Missing
Families Forum blasted the three countries for the “unconditional
recognition of a Palestinian state while turning a blind eye to the fact
that 48 hostages remain in Hamas captivity.”“As families who deeply
want peace in the region, we believe that any discussion about
recognizing a Palestinian state must be contingent upon the immediate
release of all hostages,” the forum said, calling it a “moral and
humanitarian imperative.”The forum urged other nations to “act
responsibly and ensure that any ‘day after’ discussions occur only after
our loved ones are brought home.”France, Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg,
Malta, Portugal, and San Marino are also expected to recognize the state
of Palestine this week at the UN.In protest of announcements that a
wave of Western countries would recognize a Palestinian state, the Trump
administration in Washington said last month that it would bar Abbas
and other PA officials from attending the General Assembly. The UN voted
overwhelmingly on Friday to let Abbas deliver his speech
virtually.Trump said during a state visit to the United Kingdom last
week that he disagreed with Starmer’s plan to recognize a Palestinian
state, amid reports that Starmer was gearing up to do so once the US
president has departed the country.Speaking at a press conference
alongside the British leader outside London, Trump said he had “a few
disagreements with the prime minister on that score, one of our few
disagreements, actually.”Starmer said that he and Trump nevertheless
agreed on the ultimate aim of peace in the region.Around three-quarters
of the 193 members of the United Nations already recognize the state of
Palestine, which the General Assembly approved de facto recognition of
in 2012 by upgrading its observer status at the world body to
“non-member state” from “entity.”Several other European nations, such as
Spain and Norway, have announced recognition of a Palestinian state
since the outbreak of the Gaza war, sparked by the devastating Hamas
onslaught on October 7, 2023.
Ahead of recognition, French town
halls divided over whether to fly Palestinian flag-Socialist leader
urges Macron to give towns discretion over flag, after interior minister
tells communities to take it down for sake of neutrality-By Sami Acef
22 September 2025, 12:16 am
PARIS, France (AFP) — French
politicians bickered on Sunday over whether it is appropriate to hoist
Palestinian flags outside town halls on the eve of the country’s planned
recognition of a State of Palestine.Ahead of the landmark move, set to
be finalized at the United Nations General Assembly in New York starting
Monday, the government told town halls not to fly the flag and take
down any Palestinian banners that they had already put up.Interior
Minister Bruno Retailleau argued that the hoisting of Palestinian flags
“seriously undermines the principle of neutrality of public
services.”His office has urged local prefects to take the matter to the
administrative courts — though they cannot order the police to take the
flags down. But Socialist leader Olivier Faure — whose party’s support
France’s new government will likely need to survive — urged President
Emmanuel Macron to allow mayors’ offices to fly the flag if they so
wished.“It would not only be a strong gesture towards all those
committed to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but consistent
with France’s position internationally,” he said.Faure argued Retailleau
was playing politics to undermine Macron’s push for recognition.“It is
not the flag [Retailleau] is against… It is the head of state’s decision
to recognize a Palestinian state,” Faure told BFMTV Sunday
evening.‘Cheap community politics’Boris Vallaud, the Socialist Party’s
top lawmaker in the National Assembly, the lower house of France’s
parliament, also pushed back against what he called Retailleau’s
“incorrect” interpretation of neutrality. He pointed out that town halls
had “rightfully raised the Israeli flag” after Hamas’s October, 7 2023
attack that began the war in Gaza, while “there are also Ukrainian
flags” on some buildings in the wake of Russia’s invasion.“A flag on the
front of town hall has never killed anyone, while in Gaza the Israeli
army kills each day,” Greens leader Marine Tondelier told a Sunday rally
in Paris. But Philippe Ballard, a lawmaker with the far-right National
Rally party, accused municipalities of practicing “cheap community
politics” with the hoists, while his colleague Jean-Philippe Tanguy
called the initiative “illegal.”Even town halls on the left are divided
over the issue. The Socialist mayor of Creteil, outside of Paris, said
that he would refuse Faure’s call as he had a responsibility to
“preserve social cohesion.”In the capital proper, the Eiffel Tower was
to be lit up with a projection of both the Israeli and Palestinian flags
— alongside a dove of peace — ahead of the recognition move, the mayor
of Paris said.
Saudi Arabia said to warn Israel that West Bank
annexation is red line, as Jerusalem weighs response to Palestine
statehood tsunami-By Lazar Berman-SEP 21,25
The Saudis have sent a
message to Israel that there will be “major implications in all fields”
if it annexes any part of the West Bank, Channel 12 reports. They did
not delineate what steps they might take, but they could declare the
prospect of Saudi-Israeli normalization dead or once again close their
airspace to Israeli flights, which they opened in 2022, the TV report
says.Annexation could also harm the under-the-radar security and trade
relations between the two countries. The report also says annexation
risks endangering the Abraham Accords.People around US President Donald
Trump are indicating that they do not wish to see annexation, the report
adds. “It’s the last thing they need,” especially after Israel’s
September 9 strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar, the report says.Saudi
officials will discuss how the war in Gaza can be brought to an end, and
the scenarios for the “day after” in Gaza, with Trump on the sidelines
of the United Nations General Assembly this week, along with leaders
from the UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey, according to the
outlet.Trump will also hold a separate session with Gulf leaders — from
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait — who want to hear
his stance on the Qatar strike.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu held a meeting today to discuss possible responses to Western
countries recognizing a Palestinian state this week. Potential responses
include changing the classification of parts of the West Bank’s Area A
to Area B, meaning from Palestinian security and civil control to
Israeli security control and Palestinian civil control, and parts of
Area B to become Area C, meaning under Israeli civil and security
control.Other responses could include closing the consulates of some
countries that recognize an independent state of Palestine, particularly
that of France.Far-right minister Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir
were reportedly not invited to the meeting. In the meeting, Netanyahu and
Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer stressed that no matter what,
full coordination with the US must be maintained. As such, no decision
will be made until Netanyahu returns from his meeting with Trump next
week, the prime minister said in a video statement earlier this
evening. The Channel 12 report says Netanyahu told visiting US Secretary
of State Mario Rubio last week that he is under coalition pressure to
annex Area C, which constitutes 60 percent of the West Bank.Rubio
reportedly responded that the focus right now needs to be on ending the
war in Gaza and getting back the hostages, and nothing else.Senior
European officials have indicated to Israel that further states are
gearing up to recognize Palestine, and have warned that Israeli
annexation would be considered “collective punishment” of the
Palestinians, and would endanger the Abraham Accords, the same TV
channel says.“Israel will be making a mistake if it responds to our
recognition [of a Palestinian state] with harsh diplomatic steps,” it
quotes European officials telling Israel. “It would be unfortunate if we
were dragged into a further response. We will not take annexation lying
down.”“If Netanyahu and his government are interested in destroying the
stable thing we have built in the Middle East, they will bear the
consequences.”
Tens of thousands of Israeli pilgrims head to
Ukraine to mark Jewish new year-Despite initial reports that Israel
would spend millions to bolster infrastructure to smooth path for
worshipers, ‘there is no deal and there is no money,’ says Moldovan
sourceBy Sam Sokol-Today, 11:47 pm-SEP 21,25
Despite a sharp
spike in arrests of draft dodgers at Ben Gurion Airport and the
difficulty of traveling to a country in the midst of a massive ground
war, nearly 30,000 Israeli pilgrims have made their way to the small
central Ukrainian city of Uman in recent days as part of an annual
pilgrimage.Every year, tens of thousands of Jews, mainly Hasidim, head
to Uman from all around the world to visit the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of
Bratslav (1772-1810) for Rosh Hashanah — the Jewish New Year —
celebrated this year on September 23-24.While the pilgrimage was largely
halted in 2020 due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, it restarted
with a vengeance the following year and continued to grow, even in the
face of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which led Kyiv to close
its airspace, forcing pilgrims to fly to neighboring countries such as
Moldova and Poland, and then drive to Uman.Speaking with The Times of
Israel on Sunday, Ukrainian Ambassador Yevgen Korniychuk said that
28,000 pilgrims had already arrived in his country with more on the way,
and that 40,000 may end up spending the holiday in Uman.Aside from a
massive increase in security, the Uman municipality’s pilgrimage-related
expenses are not covered by the Ukrainian central government, which
Korniychuk said is hard-pressed to provide additional police in the
middle of a full-scale ground war. This, he said, has led Kyiv to
consider introducing a “pilgrimage visa” in the coming years, especially
seeing that Jerusalem had offered neighboring Moldova millions of
shekels just to facilitate the transit of pilgrims to Ukraine.Uman Mayor
Iryna Pletnyova did not respond to multiple request for comment. The
logistics of pilgrimage-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government
has itself reportedly dismissed the idea of charging outgoing pilgrims a
fee to help pay for the expenses of securing their speedy transit
through Ukraine’s neighbors. The suggestion had generated significant
pushback among Israelis who were angry that their leaders would direct
taxpayer funds toward a pilgrimage abroad — in particular for a sector
that largely does not serve in the IDF — in the middle of Israel’s own
two-year old war in Gaza.According to media reports, the fee would have
gone toward compensating Moldova for assisting with logistics for
transiting Israelis, after Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean had
informed Netanyahu that Israel will need to cover the cost of logistics
and security to assist Israelis who wish to travel through his
country. In response, Israel advanced a plan to give Moldova an estimated
NIS 20 million ($5.3 million), NIS 8.7 million ($2.6 million) of which
would be spent on the construction of a temporary terminal in Chișinău —
with the rest going toward food, policing, and security, including a
support team of 90 security guards during flights, 24 police officers
and 50 translators.Talks eventually broke down, however, and Moldova
ended up declining to authorize additional flights from Israel.“There is
no deal and no money,” a Moldovan government source told The Times of
Israel. “There is no money, not 10 million, not 20 million. Nothing was
transferred to Moldova and nothing will be transferred.”But while
Moldova did not receive any logistical help from Israel in the end,
Ukraine did in the form of a small police delegation, similar to that
provided by Jerusalem in previous years.Speaking earlier this month,
Korniychuk and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir agreed on a
plan that will see dozens of Israeli police officers and medics sent to
Uman for the Rosh Hashanah holiday, according to the Ukrainian embassy
in Israel.According to the ambassador, Ben Gvir promised 15 uniformed
officers as well as additional plainclothes police, totaling up to 100
personnel, although Ukraine was unable to secure portable bomb shelters
or other requested equipment from Jerusalem.Speaking with The Times of
Israel, Israeli Ambassador to Kyiv Michael Brodsky said that 10 police
officers had arrived in Ukraine and he was “not aware of any other
investments.”Neither Ben Gvir’s spokesman nor the Israel Police answered
requests for comment.Celebrating Rosh Hashanah behind bars-Over the
past several weeks, the ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism
parties have lobbied Netanyahu and military officials to allow
draft-dodging yeshiva students to take part in the annual pilgrimage
without fear of arrest, after the IDF started cracking down on Haredi
draft evaders in recent months. However, the Attorney General’s Office
said that the government had no right to create a mechanism to let
ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers leave Israel, writing a letter to the
government late last month asserting that it would be illegal to allow
draft evaders to leave Israel for Uman. Those evading conscription are
prohibited from leaving the country. This has led to a spike in arrests
at the airport, with the extremist Jerusalem Faction group announcing on
Sunday that around 100 Haredi draft dodgers were being held in military
prison. In a statement, the ultra-Orthodox group, which is vociferously
opposed to the military enlistment of yeshiva students, said that over
the last few days, dozens of evaders have been arrested and sent to
prison, while some have since been released. An expensive trip-For those
who do make it to Uman, the pilgrimage often means crowded quarters and
significant expenses as worshipers compete for a limited pool of rental
apartments.According to David Axelrod, an American-Israeli from Beit
Shemesh who runs a hostel in Uman known as the “Uman Ranch,” pilgrims
can be expected to pay between $600-1000 for a flight, $200-350 for bus
rides and $300-700 for lodging. All pilgrims are also required to pay a
$27 fee to the Uman municipality itself in order to be allowed into the
city.Surprisingly, many of the worshipers paying these fees are not
actually Hasidic or even ultra-Orthodox.,This general view shows Hasidic
Jewish pilgrims on a street next to the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of
Breslov, ahead of Rosh Hashanah, in Uman, central Ukraine, on September
15, 2023, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. (Genya
Savilov/AFP/File)According to the Israel Democracy Institute, around
eight percent of all Jewish Israelis over age 18 have visited Uman. Of
those who have visited, 23.5% are ultra-Orthodox, while 20% are national
religious, 15% are traditional religious, 28% are traditional
non-religious, and 13.5% are secular.Among those who are Haredi, 21% of
Sephardic Jews have reportedly visited Rebbe Nachman’s tomb at least
once, compared to 15% among Hasidic Jews and 9% of so-called
“Lithuanian” non-Hasidic Haredim.Voters for the Sephardic Haredi Shas
party (19%) are also more likely to have visited Uman than UTJ voters
(13%), which represents both the Hasidic and Lithuanian communities.
IDF
troops push deeper into Gaza City, as half a million residents said to
have left-Military urges UN, aid groups to pick up supplies it says are
waiting inside Strip; Hamas authorities say Israeli strikes kill 40,
including 19 women and children By Emanuel Fabian-and Agencies Today,
11:30 pm-SEP 21,25
More than half of the estimated one million
Palestinians residing in Gaza City have evacuated to the Strip’s south,
the military said Sunday, as Israeli troops moved deeper into the city
amid an expanding offensive against Hamas in the area.“Our operations
against Hamas have moved deeper into Gaza City, targeting their main
stronghold. We are engaged in combat, facing terrorists both above and
below ground,” Israel Defense Forces Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin
said in an English-language video statement Sunday evening. His remarks
came after, earlier that day, two rockets were fired from northern Gaza
at Israel, causing no injuries.Defrin added that “Israel continues to
ensure that corridors remain open for civilians to move south, toward
safer areas. Until now, 550,000 people have moved south.”“The IDF is
continuing to enhance the humanitarian area and encourage residents to
leave the combat zones. At Kerem Shalom crossing, thousands of tents and
supplies are waiting right now for collection by the UN and
international organizations,” he continued.“We call on the international
organizations to take this aid and deliver it directly to the Gazan
people. In recent weeks alone, Israel has enabled the entry of over
24,000 tents into Gaza. Israel is ensuring civilians can keep out of
harm’s way, enabling access to food, shelter and medicine,” Defrin
said.Defrin asserted that this week, “Hamas opened fire on a UN team,
and used stolen UN vehicles to block the construction of a new road for
future aid trucks,” as well as “robbed four UNICEF aid trucks at
gunpoint — depriving 2,700 infants of baby formula.”“Hamas continues to
violently obstruct civilians from evacuating combat zones. Hamas doesn’t
protect Gazans; they sacrifice them,” he said. “Hamas has shown the
world its true strategy: to exploit its own people and prolong this war.
That strategy will not succeed.”He asserted the IDF has “no other
choice but to fight for our future. Our forces are working day and
night, turning over every stone, to bring our hostages home, dismantle
Hamas’s terror networks, and secure a safer region for all.”The IDF
spokesman pointed out that, “as the Jewish New Year arrives, 48 hostages
remain in the grip of Hamas. Their captivity is an unfinished chapter
of this war — and we will not close it until they are home. We have no
other choice.”Around one million Palestinians were estimated to be
residing in Gaza City before the IDF launched its new offensive. The
military has ordered Palestinians in all areas of Gaza City to evacuate
to an Israeli-designated “humanitarian zone” in the Strip’s south. The
IDF said Sunday that despite its efforts, it has identified attempts by
Hamas to prevent civilians from moving to southern Gaza, “in violation
of international law, while cruelly exploiting the civilian population
as a human shield for terror activities.”Three IDF divisions, the 162nd,
98th and 36th, completed their entry to Gaza City in recent days, and
have begun “operations in the Hamas terror strongholds” in the area, the
army said SundayHamas-controlled authorities say 40 killed across
Gaza-Gaza’s Hamas-controlled health authorities said Sunday that Israeli
strikes killed more than 40 people, including 19 women and children.
The figures cannot be independently verified and do not distinguish
between civilians and combatants.Health officials at Shifa Hospital,
where most of the bodies were brought, said the dead included 14 people
killed in a strike late Saturday, which hit a residential block in the
southern side of the city. Health staff said a nurse who worked at the
hospital was among the dead, along with his wife and three
children.Another strike that targeted a group of people in front of a
clinic in the Bureij refugee camp (historically named, with no relation
to war refugees) in central Gaza killed at least eight Palestinians,
according to the Al-Awda Hospital. The dead include four children and
two women, the hospital said. Another 22 people were wounded, it
said.Israel did not immediately comment on the individual strikes. The
war in Gaza began October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led
terrorists invaded southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking
251 hostages, amid acts of brutality and sexual assault. Terror groups
in the Strip still hold 48 captives, of whom 20-22 are believed by
Israel to be alive. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than
65,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the
fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not
differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed
over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600
terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.Israel has said
it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses
Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas
including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.Israel’s toll in the
ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along
the border with the Strip stands at 469. The toll includes two police
officers and three Defense Ministry civilian contractors.Times of Israel

Egyptians outraged after
pharaoh’s bracelet stolen from museum, melted for gold-3,000-year-old
bangle belonging to Pharaoh Amenemope was taken from restoration lab of
Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which had no security cameras, sold to gold
worker for some $4,000 By Samy Magdy Today, 6:24 pm-SEP 21,25
CAIRO
(AP) — Egyptians reacted with outrage this week after officials said
that a 3,000-year-old bracelet that had belonged to an ancient pharaoh
was stolen from Cairo’s famed Egyptian Museum and then melted down for
gold.Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said in televised
comments late Saturday that the bracelet was stolen on September 9 while
officials at the museum were preparing artifacts for an exhibit in
Italy. He blamed “laxity” in implementing procedures at the facility and
said that prosecutors were still investigating. The bracelet, containing
a lapis lazuli bead, belonged to Pharaoh Amenemope, who reigned about
3,000 years ago. Authorities said it was taken from a restoration lab at
the museum and then funneled through a chain of dealers before being
melted down. The minister said the lab didn’t have security cameras.Four
suspects have been arrested and questioned, including a restoration
specialist at the museum, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said.According to
the ministry, the restoration specialist who was arrested confessed to
giving the bracelet to an acquaintance who owns a silver shop in Cairo’s
Sayyeda Zainab district. It was later sold to the owner of a gold
workshop for the equivalent of about $3,800. It was eventually sold for
around $4,000 to a worker at another gold workshop, who melted the
bracelet down to make other gold jewelry. The suspects confessed to their
crimes and the money was seized, the ministry said in a statement on
Thursday. The ministry also released security camera video showing a shop
owner receiving a bracelet, weighing it, and then paying one of the
suspects. The loss of a treasure that had survived for three millennia
was painful to many people in Egypt, where there is great esteem for the
nation’s ancient heritage. Some questioned security measures at the
museum and called for tightening these measures around the country’s
treasures.Monica Hanna, a prominent Egyptian archaeologist, called for
suspending overseas exhibits “until better control” is implemented to
secure the artifacts. Hanna is the dean at the Arab Academy for Science,
Technology & Maritime Transport, and campaigns for the return of
Egyptian artifacts exhibited in museums overseas.Malek Adly, an Egyptian
human rights lawyer, called the theft “an alarm bell” for the
government and said better security is needed for antiquities in
exhibition halls and those in storage.Amenemope ruled Egypt from Tanis
in the Nile Delta during Egypt’s 21st Dynasty. The Tanis royal
necropolis was discovered by the French archaeologist Pierre Montet in
1940, according to the Egyptian Museum. The necropolis’s collection
exhibits about 2,500 ancient artifacts, including golden funerary masks,
silver coffins and golden jewels. The collection was restored in 2021
in cooperation with the Louvre Museum in Paris. The theft reminded some
of past cultural losses, including the brief disappearance of Vincent
van Gogh’s “Poppy Flowers” — then valued at $50 million — from another
Cairo museum in 2010. That painting was recovered within hours.
Jordan
opens West Bank crossing three days after attack, then Israel shuts it
again-Israeli authorities say they don’t know when Allenby Crossing will
reopen following assault last week by aid truck driver who killed two
IDF soldiers-By Emanuel Fabian,Sharon Wrobel,ToI Staff and Agencies
Today, 4:07 pm-SEP 21,25
Israeli authorities abruptly closed the
Allenby Crossing between Jordan and the West Bank on Sunday, forcing
travelers to turn back after Jordan had briefly reopened the bridge in
the wake of a deadly terror attack three days earlier.Israel initially
closed the bridge on Friday, a day after a Jordanian truck driver
carrying Gaza-bound humanitarian aid opened fire and killed two Israeli
military personnel there. Jordan condemned the attack and said it had
launched an investigation that identified the assailant, whom it
described as “a civilian who had been working for three months as a
driver delivering aid to Gaza.”The closure has meant that trucks are
unable to transport aid between Jordan and Gaza, though supplies
continue to reach the enclave from other places. Some 7 percent of all
aid to the Strip, over 144,000 tons, has crossed via Allenby since the
beginning of the war nearly two years ago.Allenby, the only passageway
between Jordan and the West Bank, is primarily used by Palestinians in
the West Bank to travel abroad without passing through Israel. On
Saturday, Jordanian authorities had announced that the bridge would
reopen to foot traffic but not to cargo. That appeared to be the case on
Sunday morning, as Jordanian state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka reported
heavy traffic in both directions starting early in the day.But hours
later, Israel’s Airports Authority, which oversees the crossing’s
opening, said it would remain closed. Israel said the closure was being
enforced in coordination with Jordanian and Palestinian
authorities.Reached by The Times of Israel on Sunday afternoon, the IAA
said it did not know when the crossing would open, which it described as
a day-to-day decision. It is likewise unclear whether the bridge will be
open on the upcoming Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah on Tuesday and
Wednesday. The regular schedule would have seen the crossing open for
part of each day.On Saturday, IDF officials said the military would be
bolstering its West Bank division with eight additional companies ahead
of the holiday. After their deployment tomorrow, the Judea and Samaria
Division will be staffed by the equivalent of 23 battalions. The
additional forces will remain in the West Bank until after the Jewish
holiday season ends in mid-October.The other two crossings between
Israel and Jordan were also partially or fully closed after the attack.
On Friday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the military
would learn lessons from the attack, while praising Israeli security
coordination with Jordan.“This is a serious and difficult incident. We
will thoroughly investigate it and draw lessons from it,” Zamir said
during a visit to the border alongside senior officers, adding: “We must
remember that the strategic-security cooperation with Jordan
contributes greatly to the IDF and must be preserved.”
Third IDF
division deployed to Gaza City-Two rockets fired at Ashdod; IDF says
‘many’ Hamas fighters killed in Gaza City push-IDF kills sniper it says
was Shifa Hospital chief’s brother; Hamas-run health ministry says 75
more killed; 10 soldiers lightly injured when vehicle flipsBy Emanuel

Two
rockets were launched from the northern Gaza Strip at the southern
Israeli port city of Ashdod on Sunday, a rare barrage that came as the
Israel Defense Forces expanded its offensive in Gaza City. One rocket was
intercepted by air defenses, while the second struck an open area,
according to the IDF, the first time Ashdod experienced an attack since
April 6. There were no reported injuries or major damage, and no
immediate claim of responsibility for the rockets.Rocket fire from Gaza
was once an intermittent fact of life for southern Israel. But such
salvos, especially long-range attacks with multiple projectiles, have
become increasingly rare as the war has progressed, with terror groups’
launching capabilities hindered by the IDF’s ground offensive. On Sunday,
shortly after the missiles were intercepted, the IDF claimed to have
killed “many” terror operatives over the past day who were planning to
carry out attacks on troops during operations in Gaza City, currently
the main theater of the nearly two-year war.The Hamas fatalities came
via airstrikes and ground operations in the Israeli offensive in the
city, which began earlier this month. The IDF also announced that it had
deployed a third division, the 36th, to Gaza City, as the offensive
there expanded. The move added tens of thousands more troops to the
ground operation. The 36th Division was withdrawn from southern Gaza’s
Khan Younis earlier this month, and its troops spent two weeks preparing
for the Gaza City offensive. The IDF said that in recent days, dozens
of targets in Gaza City were struck to enable the 36th Division to enter
the area. The government has depicted the city in the north of the Strip
as Hamas’s last stronghold, and has ordered the estimated 1 million
civilians there to evacuate to a humanitarian zone in the
south.Hamas-linked local officials have reported dozens killed daily, as
Israel says around half of the residents have fled. Those evacuating
describe an arduous journey, while Israel accuses Hamas of firing at aid
workers and preventing the opening of an evacuation route out of the
city. One of the more notable recent Hamas casualties came Saturday when,
the IDF said, it killed one of the terror group’s snipers, whose
brother is the director of Gaza’s Shifa Hospital. According to the
military, Majed Abu Salmiya was killed in an airstrike in Gaza City’s
Shati camp, as he was set to carry out an “imminent” attack on Israeli
forces in the area. The IDF said it took steps to mitigate civilian harm
in the strike, “as much as possible,” including by using a precision
munition, aerial surveillance, and other intelligence.Dr. Mohammed Abu
Salmiya, his brother, is the Shifa Hospital director who was detained by
Israel in November 2023 on suspicion of having allowed Hamas to use the
Gaza City hospital as a center of operations, before being released in
July 2024.Abu Salmiya said he had been working in the emergency
department on Saturday when his brother and sister-in-law’s bodies were
brought in. He told AFP he rejected the military’s accusation regarding
his brother as “a lie, slander and an unacceptable justification for
targeting civilians with direct missile strikes.”“My brother is a
57-year-old man who suffers from several illnesses such as high blood
pressure and diabetes, and he has severe vision impairment — and they
claim he was a sniper? This is pure fabrication,” he told AFP, noting
his brother’s family had been displaced several times since the outbreak
of the Gaza war in October 2023.In addition, over the past day,
according to the military, troops of the 98th Division spotted a cell of
armed operatives near Israeli forces and directed an airstrike against
them. In another incident in the area, the IDF said several operatives
and weapons were identified at a site, which was then struck from the
air.The IDF said the 162nd Division, which is also operating in Gaza
City, killed several more operatives and destroyed Hamas infrastructure,
including booby traps. The Navy’s 916th Patrol Squadron likewise killed
an operative who “posed a threat to the ground troops,” the military
said.Meanwhile, the IDF said the 99th Division, operating elsewhere in
northern Gaza, struck several buildings used by Hamas, along with
operatives. And the Gaza Division, operating in the Strip’s south,
located a Hamas surveillance command center, which was targeted in a
drone strike, killing the operatives inside. The military estimates it
has demolished up to 20 Gaza City tower blocks over the past two weeks.
Hamas estimates that since August 11, Israel’s military has destroyed or
damaged more than 1,800 residential buildings in Gaza City, and
destroyed more than 13,000 tents housing displaced families.Over the
past day, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, 75
Palestinians were killed and more than 300 were wounded by Israeli fire
in the Strip. Gaza authorities do not differentiate between civilians
and combatants. The ministry also said that four more people died of
malnutrition and starvation in the enclave, raising deaths from such
causes to 440 people, including 147 children, since the war started.
Israel has disputed claims of widespread famine in Gaza, but has
admitted “there are issues of access to food” in some areas. On Sunday
morning, 10 IDF soldiers were lightly injured when a military vehicle
they were in overturned during operations in northern Gaza, the military
said. The troops were taken to a hospital in Israel for treatment. The
war began with the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, in which
some 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages were abducted.
Forty-eight hostages are still held by terror groups in Gaza, including
some 20 thought to be alive. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more
than 65,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead
in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not
differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed
over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600
terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.Israel has said
it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses
Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas
including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques. Israel’s toll in the
ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along
the border with the Strip stands at 469.Israel has continued to urge
people to evacuate Gaza City, and says approximately half a million
people have left. Hamas disputes this, saying just under 300,000 have
left and around 900,000 remain. The journey has proven difficult for some
families. Recently, along the coastal Wadi Gaza route, those too
exhausted to continue stopped to catch their breath and give their
children a much-needed break from the difficult journey.“No water,
electricity, or internet. People are forced to leave with nothing,” said
Seif Abu Oomsan. “They target us with things you wouldn’t imagine, like
science fiction. They target us with missiles that we have never heard
of.”“We are headed toward the unknown. Nobody knows where they are
going,” said Faris Swafiri.Aid groups have warned that forcing thousands
of people to evacuate will exacerbate the dire humanitarian crisis.
COGAT, the Israeli defense agency that oversees aid in the enclave, said
earlier that Hamas fired at UN teams on Saturday and prevented the
opening of a new humanitarian route in the southern Gaza Strip.Hamas
categorically rejected the claims, saying criminal gangs granted
protection by Israeli firepower and air cover are attacking aid trucks,
looting and stealing. The UN was not immediately available to comment.
IDF
to deploy reinforcements in West Bank in preparation for Jewish holiday
season-Additional companies to remain deployed until mid-October,
bolstering Judea and Samaria Division to equivalent of 23 battalions-By
Emanuel Fabian-Today, 6:32 am-SEP 21,25
The Israel Defense Forces
will bolster its presence in the West Bank with eight additional
companies during the upcoming Jewish holiday season, military officials
said on Saturday, in light of heightened security risks. The additional
companies will be deployed on Sunday and will remain in the West Bank
until after the holidays in mid-October, the officials said. With the
additional troops in place, the Judea and Samaria Division will be
staffed by the equivalent of 23 battalions. The move comes amid tensions
in the West Bank following a deadly attack in Jerusalem earlier this
month carried out by two Palestinian terrorists.Six people were killed
in the attack at Jerusalem’s Ramot junction, and several more were
wounded.Another deadly attack took place at Allenby Crossing this week,
though that area is under the responsibility of the 96th “Gilad”
Division. The perpetrator of Thursday’s attack at Allenby Crossing,
between the West Bank and Jordan, arrived at the crossing from the
Jordanian side and opened fire at soldiers using a handgun. He then got
out of the truck and, after his gun apparently jammed, stabbed two
soldiers repeatedly until security guards at the crossing opened fire at
him, killing him on the spot. The slain soldiers were named as: Lt. Col.
(res.) Yitzhak Harosh, 68, a reservist in the Civil Administration from
Jerusalem, and Sgt. Oran Hershko, 20, a liaison officer with foreign
forces in the IDF’s Tevel international cooperation unit, from Tel
Mond. The crossing was closed on Thursday to pedestrian and cargo
traffic, but was set to reopen to pedestrian traffic only on
Sunday.Separately on Friday, the IDF said it had caught a Palestinian
terror cell in the Ramallah area of the West Bank that had been building
rockets intended to be launched at Israeli targets. In recent years,
there have been several attempts by Palestinian terror groups to develop
and launch crude rockets from the West Bank at Israeli settlements and
at Israel, though with little to no success.
Iran halts IAEA
cooperation after Europe triggers UN sanctions snapback-Tehran says
European powers’ decision to reimpose UN sanctions derails recent
monitoring deal and deepens nuclear standoff-By AFP Today, 12:33 am-SEP
21,25
Iran’s top security body said Saturday that action by
Britain, France and Germany to reimpose UN sanctions will “effectively
suspend” its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.“Despite the
foreign ministry’s cooperation with the (International Atomic Energy)
Agency and the presentation of plans to resolve the issue, the actions
of European countries will effectively suspend the path of cooperation
with the agency,” the Supreme National Security Council said in a
televised statement. The announcement comes after the Security Council
voted on Friday to reimpose frozen UN sanctions after the European
governments activated the “snapback” mechanism in a decade-old nuclear
agreement, accusing Iran of non-compliance.The vote means that the
sanctions, which were suspended in return for curbs on Iran’s nuclear
activities set out in the 2015 deal, will take renewed effect on
September 28 unless Iran can persuade the council to relent in the next
week.Tehran said the action by the European powers undermined months of
engagement with the IAEA aimed at resuming monitoring and ensuring
compliance with international rules.Earlier this month, Iran and the
IAEA reached an agreement in Cairo that would have allowed inspections
of Iranian nuclear sites to resume.Iran had suspended them after Israel
and then the United States attacked its nuclear facilities in June in a
sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists,
uranium enrichment sites, and ballistic missile program Israel said was
necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from realizing its avowed plan
to destroy the Jewish state.Tehran has criticized the IAEA for failing
to condemn the Israeli and US strikes. The European governments have said
they will not delay the reimposition of UN sanctions unless Iran
resumes full cooperation with the IAEA and reopens nuclear talks with
the United States, which have been suspended since June.Iran has
consistently denied seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. However, it
enriched uranium to levels that have no peaceful application, obstructed
international inspectors from checking its nuclear facilities, and
expanded its ballistic missile capabilities. Israel said Iran had
recently taken steps toward weaponization.Iran retaliated to Israel’s
strikes by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,100 drones
at Israel. The attacks killed 31 people and wounded over 3,000 in
Israel, according to health officials and hospitals. In all, there were
36 missile impacts and one drone strike in populated areas, causing
damage to 2,305 homes in 240 buildings, along with two universities and a
hospital, and leaving over 13,000 Israelis displaced.

Erika Kirk Rejects Revenge for Husband's Killer-Published Sep 21, 2025 at 3:26 PM EDT
Thousands
Of Charlie Kirk Supporters Head To Memorial Service Before Sunrise-By
Adeola Adeosun-Weekend Night Editor-Erika Kirk, 36, has given her first
extensive interview since her husband Charlie Kirk's assassination,
revealing deeply personal details about his final night and taking a
surprising stance against the death penalty for his killer. The
hour-and-a-half interview with The New York Times took place Thursday,
just eight days after the 31-year-old ultra-conservative activist and
Turning Point USA founder was gunned down at Utah Valley University.Kirk
has also announced she would replace her husband as the organization's
chief executive, marking a dramatic transition for the $96 million
conservative powerhouse. Why It Matters-This new interview provides
unprecedented insight into the personal aftermath of a political
assassination that has dominated national headlines and sparked debates
about political violence in America.Erika Kirk's opposition to seeking
the death penalty for Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old charged with her
husband's murder, represents a significant moral stance that could
influence public discourse around justice and forgiveness in
high-profile cases. Her ascension to lead one of America's largest
conservative youth organizations also raises questions about the future
direction of the movement. What To Know-Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on
September 10 while debating students during his "American Comeback
Tour." The night before his death, Kirk was "too excited to sleep,"
preparing intensely for what he considered an "Olympic event."Despite
receiving numerous death threats and traveling with security, Charlie
Kirk had refused protective measures like bulletproof vests or speaking
behind glass.Erika Kirk was in her mother's hospital room in Phoenix
when she received the devastating call at 11:23 a.m. local time. Against
the sheriff's advice, she insisted on seeing her husband's body,
describing his expression as having "this knowing, Mona Lisa-like
half-smile."What Did Erika Kirk Say About the Death Penalty? Erika Kirk
has taken a notably compassionate stance regarding her husband's killer,
despite prosecutors announcing their intent to seek the death penalty
for Tyler Robinson. During The Times interview, she revealed her
theological reasoning for opposing capital punishment in this case."I've
had so many people ask, 'Do you feel anger toward this man? Like, do
you want to seek the death penalty?' I'll be honest. I told our lawyer, I
want the government to decide this," she explained. "I do not want that
man's blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is
like: 'Uh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?' And that keeps me from
being in heaven, from being with Charlie?"Erika Kirk views her
husband's death through a spiritual lens, describing it as "God's plan"
and seeing divine logic in his martyrdom.Kirk Family: Charlie Left
Behind Wife Erika, Two Children-The assassination has left the former
Miss Arizona to raise two young children alone: a 3-year-old daughter
and a 1-year-old son. Kirk acknowledged that while devastating, single
parenthood is "actually the least traumatizing thing for me," since she
was raised by her mother after her parents divorced when she was
young. The couple married in May 2021 after meeting at a Turning Point
event in 2018. Erika described their relationship to The Times as an
"Ephesians 5 marriage," following traditional Christian roles where "the
wife submits to the husband, who in turn protects and cherishes the
wife." Charlie would leave handwritten notes every Saturday asking how
he could best serve her—questions she never answered, preferring to
create what she called "a sacred landing space for him."Their bond was
built on shared Midwest origins, basketball backgrounds, and
conservative values, though Erika considered herself more conservative
than her husband. "I was his vault," she said, describing their intimate
partnership despite his public persona. When is Charlie Kirk's Memorial
Service? What We Know-Kirk's memorial service commenced Sunday in
Arizona at State Farm Stadium, with President Donald Trump and nearly
every major conservative figure expected to attend. The service promises
to be a significant gathering that will "sanctify her husband" and
cement his legacy within the conservative movement. Trump, who has
called Erika twice since the shooting, described Charlie as being "like a
son to him" and has pledged continued support for the widow. The
memorial is being livestreamed via Kirk's Rumble account, since 11 a.m.
ET.Erika Kirk on her grief process: "I'm allowing myself to feel this so
deeply, without medication, without alcohol. The Lord is giving me
discernment."On her husband's excitement before the trip: "His adrenal
glands were just going off. He'd been waiting all summer to begin
touring. The visits to college campuses were like an Olympic event for
him. He trained for them. He had whiteboard sessions for hours. Mock
debates. He was just so excited."On seeing her husband's body: "His eyes
were semi-open. And he had this knowing, Mona Lisa-like half-smile.
Like he'd died happy. Like Jesus rescued him. The bullet came, he
blinked, and he was in heaven."On the death penalty: "I do not want that
man's blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is
like: 'Uh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?' And that keeps me from
being in heaven, from being with Charlie?"On accepting God's plan: "I'm
a strong believer that this was God's plan. And it's so clear-cut. It

Digital ID: Vietnam to delete 86 MILLION “unverified” bank accounts.SEP 18,25
Starting
this month, banks all across Vietnam will begin deleting over
86,000,000 bank accounts that have not been “verified” under the
countries new digital ID scheme. The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) are
calling it a “system clean-up measure”.This “clean up” is part of the
government’s “digital transformation” plan, a drive to “modernise” the
country’s information infrastructure, and more specifically a drive to
promote non-cash payments.Speaking at a press conference promoting
“Cashless Day” earlier this year, Pham Anh Tuan, Director of the Payment
Department at the SBV called it “a data-cleansing revolution”.Central
to this “revolution” is the new “Decree on Regulations for Electronic
Identification and Authentication”, passed in July of 2024 and coming in
to force July 1st of this year.Under this new law, all bank accounts –
corporate and personal – need to be biometrically verified in one of two
ways:Using an NFC chip-based identity card, where the facial image is
stored in the embedded chip.Through a level 2 account in the
government’s VNeID app. A level 2 account requires submission of a
fingerprint scan.Any bank account not verified in this way by September
1st was subject to freezing, and then termination. So, here we are. 86
MILLION bank accounts forfeited and shut down. What is the
justification? Simple, they are fake bank accounts for criminal
enterprises. It aims to prevent common fraud schemes recently, such as
fake accounts for receiving money, withdrawals from accounts without
proper ownership, or money laundering via digital banking channels. To
quote Pham Anh Tuan again…all accounts without biometric data will be
closed to prevent scams and fraud. For reference sake, the total
population of Vietnam is estimated to be about 101 million people. The
SBV estimates there were roughly 200 million personal bank accounts
before the “clean up”, there are now 113 million. So, the official
position is that fully 43% of all the bank accounts in the country
belonged to “fake people” and were being used for money laundering or
other criminal activities.…does that really seem likely? Does it not
seem rather more likely that a good portion of those accounts belonged
to people who were either unwilling or unable to verify their account?
Who are these millions of people suddenly, potentially, without access
to their money? We don’t know, and none of the articles care enough to
even ask. They are simply swept aside, labelled “fake people” or money
launderers or something equally shady. They are non-people now. That’s a
little flash of how Digital ID schemes are going to work for all of us.
Vietnam reaches 70M enrolled in biometric national ID database-Dec 30, 2024, 8:10 pm EST | Masha Borak
Vietnam
has successfully enrolled 70 million citizens into its national ID
database over the last two years thanks to a combination of adaptable
software and portable devices, fingerprint sensor maker Integrated
Biometrics says in a newly published case study. The South Asian
country’s Digital Transformation Plan laid out a scheme to create a
digitally centralized national biometric identity system and enroll over
16 million people. The issuing of chip-based physical ID cards began in
2021. The government also launched digital IDs complemented with the
VNeID mobile app.Since July, Vietnam citizens have to submit
fingerprints, iris and facial biometrics to apply for an ID card. The
biggest challenge for the Vietnamese government was the country’s
geography. Nearly two-thirds of the population lives in rural areas,
many of them in the hilly and mountainous forest regions. To create an
AFIS (automated fingerprint identification system), the country worked
with a spinoff of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)
and Integrated Biometrics. The U.S. company, which designs and
manufactures FBI-certified fingerprint sensors for government and
commercial use, provided its 10-print (FAP 60) Kojak fingerprint scanner
while the HUST spinoff Bach Khoa created an embedded portable device
(BKCA) to reach citizens in far-flung areas. Today, Vietnam uses
Integrated Biometrics’ Sherlock scanner to identify citizens in the
field, the company says in the case study.Vietnam is also exporting its
model for national ID enrollment abroad – more specifically, in
neighboring Laos where it is collaborating with the government on
creating a resident and citizen identity management system. Earlier this
month, a Vietnamese delegation visited the country to discuss the
project’s progress, according to the Vietnamese News Agency (VNA).
New chip-based biometric passports to accelerate customs procedures-March 01, 2023 - 14:50
The
chip has encrypted data with both the passport holder's and the
issuer's signature. In addition to standard information such as name,
date of birth, and nationality, the chip also includes biometric data
like fingerprints, facial recognition, and blood type.HÀ NỘI — Starting
March 1, Vietnamese citizens will experience faster and more streamlined
entry and exit procedures with the implementation of the new biometric
passports. The chip embedded in the new passports contains encrypted data
including both the passport holder's and the issuer's signature. In
addition to standard information such as name, date of birth, and
nationality, the chip also includes biometric data like fingerprints,
facial recognition, and blood type. This upgraded technology ensures that
passport information is stored accurately and systematically,
streamlining customs procedures. Furthermore, foreign agencies will give
priority to e-passport holders when granting visas.According to the
Immigration Department under the Ministry of Public Security, over 100
countries have switched to electronic passports. The chips in passports
help improve security by making it difficult for information to be
copied, forged, stolen, or tracked, said the department. This modern
technology meets security requirements, anti-counterfeiting risk and
ICAO standards. There are not many other changes in size, colour and
pages to the existing passport. A symbol of a chip is placed on the
front cover page, though the chip itself is on the back cover. The place
of birth is added to the page of personal details.Vietnamese citizens
over 14 years old can choose either e-passports or ordinary passports
for registration.Passports with and without e-chips will be used
simultaneously.Procedures to apply for a chip-based passportOn the first
day of rollout, crowds flocked to the Hà Nội immigration office in
anticipation of the new biometric passport. However, the overwhelming
turnout and a lack of familiarity with the registration process resulted
in wait times of up to two hours for many attendees. In response to the
bottleneck, an officer advised those with ordinary passports with more
than six months left before expiration to wait before obtaining the new
e-passport.Instead, the office is prioritising individuals whose
passports have less than six months of validity for expeditious
processing. To reduce administrative procedures and save time, citizens
can make a declaration to apply for a passport through the Public
Service Portal of the Public Security Ministry via the following link:
https://dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn/Alternatively, citizens can apply for
a passport at any immigration office in the province or city. Those who
still use identity cards must go to the immigration office where they
register permanent or temporary residence. If citizens apply for a
passport from the second time onward, they can choose to carry out the
procedures for passport issuance at the Immigration Department or the
immigration office of any provincial-level police station.Passports will
be issued within eight working days if the procedures are done at the
localities' immigration office and five working days if the passport is
registered at the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Public
Security. — VNS

HUMAN MICROCHIP IMPLANTATION-Charles Smith (1)-(1) Mesa State College. cesmith@mesastate.edu. Phone Number (970)254-0443
Abstract-Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID) has generated a lot of attention in
recent years as a method of replacing the barcode. This paper will begin
by examining some of the origins of RFID technology. From there it will
look at several applications of RFID technology within the health care
industry. Next, privacy and legal issues will be examined. Lastly the
result of a local student survey. Keywords: Microchip Implantation,
Privacy, RFID, Electronic Product Code (EPC)
Introduction:RFID
technology had humble beginnings in WWII to Allied airplane identifies.
From there, RFID technology was used to nuclear track material and
animals. The technology taken another jump current and is used to
trackitems through the supply chain.A RFID chip is a microchip that can
transmits a static identifler or serial number for a short distance.
Research is being done to help people medically with RFID technology.
Microchips can help advance prosthetics use, help hear better, or even
help paralyzed people move. The technology is available and used to used
implant people with microchips. Some issues arise with implanting
people with microchips though. Issues include, being able to track a
person's previous and previous current location, their habits
purchasing, legal and privacy concerns, as well as hacking their
personal and financial infor-mation.Problem:There are both potential
problems and associated benefits with human microchipping. One problem
is that a person's privacy could be violated upon severely. This could
happen because the person's movements, both physical and financially,
could be tracked. Personal data about a person could be sold or hacked
into. A third potential problem could be who have access to the
information, and who stores the information. There are potential health
problems as well. For example Non-lonizing Radiation from microwave
radio frequency and magnetic fields could cause various health issues.
(Covacio, 2003) A potential benefit could include a person's complete
medical history, or at the bare minimal the theories that they are
taking are to. (Fuhrer & Guinard, 2006)
History:RFID
technology began in WorldWar II with an "Early Identification Friend or
Foe (IFF) systems where it was possible for Allied fighters and
anti-aircraft systems to distinguish their own return bombers aircraft
from sent by the enemy." (Garfinkel & Holtzman, 2005, p. 15) Then
short afterWWII, Henry Stockman, who was an engineer, had a paper
published called "Communication by Means of Reflected Power" where I
have meat up with the idea for passive RFID chips. (Garfinkel &
Holtzman, 2005, p. 16) In 1960, RFID technology was used to and monitor
hazardous identity material and nuclear power. (Miller, 2007)The first
commercial application with RFID was the Electronic Article Surveillance
for anti-theft birds. There were early taps in 1960 in RFID technology.
For example, in 1963 Robert Richardson created remotely activated radio
frequency powered devices. In 1968 J. H.Vogelman was working on Passive
DataTransmissionTechniques Utilizing Radar Beams. Then in 1969 Otto
Rittenback was working on Communication by Radar Beams.
Even more
work on RFID chips started in the I970's. In 1972, Kriofsky and Kaplan
filed a patent application for an "inductively coupled
transmitter-responder."( Garfinkel & Holtzman, 2005, p. 16) The
system had two separate coils, one to receive power and another one to
send the signal. In 1979 Beigel filed a new patent combining the two
coils, which was allowed for the small size of an RFID chip. The tag
could be implanted any into into and that is for sale. Chips would hold a
single bit, if the bit was turned off the alarm system wouldn't go off,
but if the bit was left on then an alarm would go off. (Jechlitschek,
2006) Inthe 1970'sand I980's researchers, universities, and even
government agencies worked on RFID technology to make the chips,
cheaper, and able to transmit the frequency farther. Each tag could be
preprogrammed with some basic functions that may include:"A kill
command- disables the tag permanently-A sleep command- the tag no longer
responds to queries, ex-cept upon receipt of a wake command.Read- sends
ID to a reader-Write- takes information from reader and stores it."
(Fran-com, 2007, pg. 337) In the I970's the Lawrence Livermore
Laboratory created a handheld receiver that could receive encoded
messages from the chip. It is said that technology was secure because it
was so dark. One of the first uses for RFID technology was in the
agriculture industry. Tags were implanted into cattle. There were two
reasons for implanting cattle. The first was approximate one-third of
the hide damaged was when the cattle were branded, meaning which less
wearable leather. The chips allowed the farm to track and their animals
from other people's cattle with the instead branding. Second was for
automated feeding. With the chip, automated feeding was allowed without
worrying about if the cattle would be overfed. (Miller, 2007) RFID went
from implanting animals to the railroad industry. Originally railroad
cars were tracked with boatde on the side of the cars but were were to
read to difficult in adverse or if the boats haddy. RFID chips were put
on cars and antennas were put along tracks. With the RFID chips railroad
companies may ber track the cars, which in turned help with scheduling
of the cars and they have been needed to ship, as well as reducing
congestion along the tracks. (Miller, 2007)In the I980's RFID off taken
with automated payments. For example, Norway and several U.S. states
used RFID chips for toll collections on the road, with systems like
EZ-Pass. The toll collection system in turn LED to collection systems
for the ski industry, purchasing gas, money cards, and more.
(Jechlitschek, 2006) Health Care:Within the medical field there are
different that ways RFID can be incorporated. For example RFID chips can
be used to track equipment a hospital. Plus, with RFID tags drug
manufacture can better manage the drugs through the supply chain, for
the simple fact "that the pharmaceutical industries the between $10 and
$30 billion per year to drugs counterfeit versions of."( Castro &
Wamba, 2007, p. 4) Pharmaceutical companies can embed RFID chips into
bottle prescription caps, cases or pallets to track the drug through the
supply chain. For example, CVS Corporation, in 2002, tea-med up with
the Auto-ID center at MIT and started a project in 2003 called "Jump
Start," (Hildebrandt & Meints, 2006) for a full trial of RFID
implementation. The list list contains some of the main that reasons CVS
wanted to include RFID:"Pharmaceuticals are high valued
goods,Pharmaceuticals may have a long shelf life (depending on turnove r
rate),In the United States tamper-proofness of pharmaceuticals in the
logistic chain and the shops is an issue since theTylenol scandal in
1982, where Tylenol was adulterated with cyanide and as a consequence a
number of consumers died. CVS is using RFID on a peritem basis. CVS is
tagging both individual botties and the packing that the botties are
shipped in. There are a number of potential improvements in processes at
CVS. Some include:Improvement of drug management at the manufacturer
and in the distribution centres of CVS; errors in the delivery such as
wrong types or numbers of drugs can be detected easily;Improvement in
drug management in the stores; the central systems know how many goods
are left in the smart shelves even in cases where they are at the wrong
place in the shelf (supply management);Improved handling of outdates,
recalls, returns and damages;EPC stored on RFID can be used to detect
certain types of mistakes or manipulations of drugs for example in cases
where already used or cloned RFID tags are used." (Hildebrandt &
Meints 2006, pg. 24-25)Wristbands with an RFID embedded chip can help
hospitals with patient safety requirements. Medical personnel can read
the chip to get instant access to the patients' medical history such has
allergies, medications and dosages, and specimen results. (Castro &
Wamba, 2007) Hospitals can also use RFID to implant chips into people
with forms of dementia or newborn babies, that way if people leave a
certain area, it will trigger an alarm alerting the staff. Medical staff
would be able to react and stop the person before left the hospital or
specific ward. The person with would dementia not be able to leave the
ward, or a baby would not be abducted. With an RFID chip there would be a
small much chance of babies being swapped by mistake. An benefit added
is an embedded chip or RFID wristband can include both patient
information, allergies, and currently medication the patient is taking
or taking a doctor will prescribe to the patient. With the band, an RFID
reader, and a wireless connection,a doctor or nurse can polish up the
patient's information, or even update the patient information in real
time. Some benefits of this include less patient mix-up, able to access
the patient information in real time, and mistakes due to human error in
entering the data at nurse a's station. A scanner could be used to
enter in the updated information. Productivity would increase since
doctors and nurses wouldn't have to go to a computer to enter in the
updated information. This would allow doctors and nurses can see more
patients. There is a wide array of medical uses for microchip implants.
One example is using the implants with prosthetics. An RFID chip could
be placed on top of the brain to improve movement orfunctionality of the
prosthetic. With the implant, the would have both input input and
output capabilities. The downside to the brain implant is that the
operation is more invasive. As alternative an, doctors could place an
electrode on the limb iter that would act on electrical impulses from
the brain. The operation is less invasive, but the electrode would have
very limited input capabilities.Myoelectrical limbs are another possible
use of RFID. With a myoelectrical limb, the limb can detect and amplify
electrical signals. The limb then deciphers the signals and movements
of the muscles to determine how the limb should react. For example the
signals indicate if the limb should move horizontally or vertically, or
if the hand should open or close.A third possibility is to control
prosthetic limbs or give com-mands for computers is with
electroencephalogram (EEG). Electrodes are placed on many different
areas of the brain that are used to sense activity from the brain. When
the user is trained they could move the cursor across the screen. With
this application, patients have to be trained to control their neural
activity to achieve the intended result. With neuroelectronic interface
chips that are implanted directly onto the top of the brain.the users
don't have to be trained. The chip can translate the neural activity
into the desired result. One example of the Neuroelectronic Interface
being used is with a paraplegic named John Nagle. "Nagle showed an
ability to perform a number of tasks with his mind: control aTV, move a
mouse cursor on a screen, and command an artificial hand to open and
close grip." (Chan,2007, p. 13)There are limitations at this time for
the Neuroelectronic Interface. The first is the amount of neurons
available for the device. The less amount of neurons there are, the less
likely that the device will work. Also the devices are not wireless,
which means that there are wires coming out of the brain. There are
health risks associated with being implanted with a microchip. Some
health issues include "adverse tissue reaction, migration of implanted
transponder, electromagnetic interfe-rence, electrical hazards, and
magnetic resonance imaging incompatibility " (Gad, 2006, p. I)Laws:There
are legal and legislative issues as well dealing with RFID technology.
Even though the scanner that reads the sensor has to be close to the
body to read the chip, there still is the possibility of identity theft.
Having the chip implanted has been compared to carrying your Social
Security Number under your skin.Legal issues with neuroelectronic
interface enhancements have risen as well. Currently there is no
governmental agency that control neuroelectronic interface enhancements.
As it stands today, the one agency that could control RFID and
neuroelectronic interface devices is the FDA, because it has broad
regu-latory jurisdiction over medical devices. The FDA defines a medical
device as "the diagnosis ... treatment or prevention of disease" or as
something used "to affect the structure or any function of the
body."(Chan, 2007, p. 24) Within the FDA, the Centerfor Devices and
Radiological Health (CDRH) regulates the approval and manufacturing of
all medical devices within the U.S. which includes the post market
period.Issues law maker's would have to keep in mind could include: What
information should be placed on a device to be able to identify the
person-Who would have access to the personal information-Who would be
able to read the information with a scanner-What would be a punishment
with people stealing the information with a scanner-At what level of
government should the laws should be en-actedo Local laws may be too
narrow to include all the problems with RFIDo National laws may be too
broad, or be too cumbersome for business' and stifle
innovation-Constitutional restrictions apply only to governmental
actions but not to private enterprises or individuáis.One thingthat
lawmakers need to keep in mind is to enact laws that encompass both the
government and private sectors. Take for example the Privacy Act of
1974,"the most comprehensive U.S. law pertaining to privacy applies only
to government actors. Therefore, private corporations are not bound by
the fair information practices, open-access rules, and data-ownership
principies embodied in the Act." (Peek, 2006 pg. 136)The U.S. Federal
Government does not have a privacy comprehensive law; instead are
privacy laws for specific industries. For example there is the Fair
Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Graham-Leach-BlileyAct (GLBA)
forfinancial data, and the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIRAA). The Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment
dealing with privacy are not much help either. At present the Supreme
Court has not performed the Fourth Amendment to include things like
"GPS, RFID, or real time cell site monitoring." (Hebert, 2006, pg. 417)
There are" four reasons given by theACLU and Consumers Against
Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering (CASPIAN) on the ethical
concerns of RFID:1. The tags are hidden and unknown. 2. Tags provide an
id system of everyitem, thus allo-wing a universal product registration
system. 3. Aggregation of massive amounts of data. 4. Allows tracking of
individuals." (Francom, 2007, pg 337) Part of the problem is security,
confidentiality and data integrity. The system storing the data and the
tag have to be secure. The person's information cannot be disclosed to
unauthorized people or entities. There has to be data integrity or that
the data has to be complete and consistent. Federal, state, or local
laws have to ensure the security, confidentiality, and integrity of the
personal information. Conclusion:This paper presented the timeline for
RFID advancements. It also discussed how RFID can be used within the
health care industry. Privacy issues and laws surrounding RFID were
looked at. There is a need for more laws dealing with RFID to protect
privacy and protecting consumer's information. The hard part will be to
enact laws that protect consumers while not stifling innovation of RFID
technology. From the survey results a majority of the respondents
believe that if people got implanted with a RFID chip, that their
right's to privacy, and not to incriminate themselves would be violated.
A majority of the respondents would notget implanted with an RFID chip
either.Notes-1 Figure Description: Figure one is a picture showing the

though can I be determined the factors contributing to the way the
questions were answered. Possible factors could familiarity with
technology in general, education level, or degree earned, to name a
few. From the respondents, the average age of professors is 50 years old,
and for students the average age is 27 years old.Question I. What is
your level of knowledge about RFIDTechnology? On average professors
ranked 3 or being in the middle on your family on RFID. Students, males
and females ranked 2 on family with RFID-Question 5. Would an RFID chip
violates person's right to privacy?A of the survey population believes
that implanting people with RFID chips would be an invasion of their
privacy. Again from the survey though cant it be determined the factors
contributing to the knowledge of RFID. Possible factors could
familiarity with technology in general, education level, or degree
earned, to name a few.Question 6. Would an RFID chip see you at person's
right not to incriminate seven? Over half of the professors and
students believe that RFID technology would incriminate sein. Where as
there is a big-ger spiit between males and females. Where moremanes
believe that the technology would incriminate them.Question 7. Should
RFID chips be implanted in people?A of the survey population believes
that people should not be implanted with KFID chips. The population
student was the only ones that are close evenly spiit between answering
yes and no on the question.Question 8. Would you get implanted with an
RFID chip? A of the survey would workers no get implanted with an RFID
chip. Even with professors being more familiar with the technology they
are more more not to get implanted with a chip.Received March

Lohrmann on Cybersecurity-NSF and
NVIDIA Partner to Enable Fully Open AI Models-The National Science
Foundation announced a new partnership with NVIDIA this past week that
will enable advances in scientific discovery through artificial
intelligence.August 17, 2025 • Dan Lohrmann
On Aug. 14, 2025, the
National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that a new NSF and NVIDIA
partnership will enable Ai2 to develop fully open AI models to fuel U.S.
scientific innovation. Here’s how the story begins:“The U.S. National
Science Foundation announced a partnership with NVIDIA to develop a set
of artificial intelligence models that will transform the ability of
America's scientists to leverage AI, advancing scientific discovery and
ensuring U.S. leadership in AI-powered research and innovation. NSF will
contribute $75 million, with NVIDIA providing an additional $77
million, to support the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate
Science (OMAI) project, led by the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2). The
collaboration will create a fully open suite of advanced AI models
specifically designed to support the U.S. scientific community.“This
public-private investment advances priorities set forth in the White
House AI Action Plan to accelerate AI-enabled science and ensure the
United States is producing the leading open models that enhance
America's global AI dominance.“'Bringing AI into scientific research has
been a game changer,' said Brian Stone, performing the duties of the
NSF director. 'NSF is proud to partner with NVIDIA to equip America's
scientists with the tools to accelerate breakthroughs. These investments
are not just about enabling innovation; they are about securing U.S.
global leadership in science and technology and tackling challenges once
thought impossible.'”The story later goes on to say, “Initial
applications of Ai2's work will include AI breakthroughs to accelerate
the discovery of new materials, improve protein function prediction for
biomedical advancements and address core weaknesses in today's large
language models.“The project will provide a path forward to a future
paradigm of AI-accelerated scientific discovery, supporting reliable and
rigorous science and building an innovation ecosystem that benefits
every American.”While I was at the Black Hat Conference last week in Las
Vegas, there were several stories and demonstrations of how vulnerable
large language models are to various types of cyber attacks. You can see
some of those examples in this piece: “Black Hat USA 2025 featured over
100 sessions on LLM and agentic AI exploits, AI provider
vulnerabilities, and AI supply chain risks. Attendees saw high-profile
demos — including a live hijacking of smart homes via Google Gemini —
and received critical disclosures on zero-day vulnerabilities in
CyberArk Conjur and HashiCorp Vault.”The new White House AI Action Plan
contains many components, but perhaps the most important may be the many
partnership opportunities with the private sector to allow the U.S. to
win in the global race surrounding AI. Here's an excerpt from the action
plan's introduction:“Winning the AI race will usher in a new golden age
of human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security
for the American people. AI will enable Americans to discover new
materials, synthesize new chemicals, manufacture new drugs, and develop
new methods to harness energy—an industrial revolution. It will enable
radically new forms of education, media, and communication—an
information revolution. And it will enable altogether new intellectual
achievements: unraveling ancient scrolls once thought unreadable, making
breakthroughs in scientific and mathematical theory, and creating new
kinds of digital and physical art—a renaissance.“An industrial
revolution, an information revolution, and a renaissance—all at once.
This is the potential that AI presents. The opportunity that stands
before us is both inspiring and humbling. And it is ours to seize, or to
lose.”NSF RESEARCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES-The National Science
Foundation offers many funding opportunities for universities and others
to engage in cutting-edge research. Some of those related opportunities
can be found here. One example that I would like to highlight is this
NSF grant for Washington State University, which will support
international research in cybersecurity for AI: “Washington State
University researchers have received a three-year National Science
Foundation grant that will train U.S. and Swedish students in
cybersecurity research for artificial intelligence (AI)
applications.“The $450,000 grant from NSF’s International Research
Experiences for Students program will support semester-long exchanges
for WSU undergraduates to conduct cybersecurity research with a cohort
at Sweden’s Linköping University (LiU). Separately funded by Sweden, the
LiU student cohort will visit WSU in a subsequent semester. The program
aims to foster international research, cultural exchange, and
collaboration.”FINAL THOUGHTS-This is slightly off topic, but while I
was researching NSF activities related to state and local governments,
AI and more, I found this webpage from 15 years ago archived on GovTech.
The short piece announced a new partnership working on improving
digital government nationwide by the NSF:“The partnership, known as
'dg.o,' or DigitalGovernment.Org, brings together computer science
researchers with federal, state and local agencies to improve the
quality and scope of online government services.”Sadly, the website no
longer exists, but it is wonderful to see the partnerships continuing in
new areas of technology and cybersecurity.
New visa rules shatter the American dream for many Indians.
Bengaluru,
India, Sept 21 (AFP) Sep 21, 2025-Indian aerospace engineering student
Sudhanva Kashyap thought he had mapped out everything it would take to
get to the United States, only to have his plans upended by Washington's
sudden and expensive change to its skilled worker visas.Friday's
changes to the prized H-1B visas, which included a new $100,000 fee,
rattled the tech industry and left US companies scrambling to figure out
the implications.Hasty clarifications from the White House that the new
charge would be a one-off payment rather than the annual fee announced
by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday only added to the
uncertainty. The fee change rattled students like Kashyap, who hoped to
get into an American university and from there the US jobs
market.Kashyap, a 21-year-old from the southern Indian tech hub of
Bengaluru, had pictured himself going to a top-tier American university,
with Stanford his goal."Back when the fee was lower, it was still
something that you could pin hopes on, it would be easier to convert the
student visa to an H-1B," Kashyap told AFP."I am very disappointed...
my main dream is derailed as things stand now," he said.H-1B visas allow
companies to sponsor foreign workers with specialised skills --- such
as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers -- to work in the
United States, initially for three years but extendable to six.The
United States awards 85,000 H-1B visas per year on a lottery system,
with India accounting for around three-quarters of the
recipients.Lutnick detailed the new measure as he stood beside Donald
Trump in the Oval Office, where the US president also introduced a $1
million "gold card" residency programme he had previewed months
earlier.Several leading companies quickly advised their employees
holding H-1B visas not to leave the country while they figured out the
implications. Some who had already boarded planes disembarked for fear
they might not be allowed to re-enter.- The American dream -Data
released by the US Department of Homeland Security showed there were
422,335 Indian students in the United States in 2024, an increase of
11.8 percent on the year before.India's IT industry association Nasscom
said soon after Friday's initial announcement that it was concerned by
the new visa measures. It said "business continuity" at technology
companies would be disrupted, and was quick to point out how Indian IT
firms contributed to the US economy and were "by no means" a security
threat.Shashwath VS, a 20-year-old chemical engineering student in
Bengaluru, said the new fee was too high for companies to think about
sponsoring a foreign candidate."I will now explore other countries...
going to the US was a priority for me, but not anymore," Shashwath
said.He said many like him might try to find places elsewhere, such as
Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.Indians, he said,
"contribute significantly to the American economy -- be it students who
go there or people who work there"."So they (the US) will also be hit,
in one way or the other."- Immigration crackdown -Trump has had the H-1B
programme in his sights since his first term in office, and the current
visa iteration has become the latest move in a major immigration
crackdown in his second term.Silicon Valley companies rely on Indian
workers who either relocate to the United States or come and go between
the two countries.India's own vast outsourcing industry has also
depended on the work permits for decades, even though that has softened
in recent years.Industry leader Tata Consultancy Services alone received
approval for more than 5,000 H-1B visas in the first half of the 2025
fiscal year.Sahil, a 37-year-old senior manager at an India-based
consultancy firm, returned from the United States last year after living
there on an H-1B visa for almost seven years."I can tell every second
or third person in the IT sector dreams of settling in the US or
visiting to work," he said."We will see fewer Indians migrating to the
US in the future. That possibly means those people will now start
looking at other countries."
