Israeli intelligence assesses that some 10% of all UNRWA employees in Gaza have ties to terror organizations, in addition to at least 12 employees it says were involved in the October 7 terror onslaught in southern Israel, according to a new report.The Wall Street Journal said Monday that intel Jerusalem shared with the US indicated that of the roughly 12,000 Gazan employees of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, some 1,200 have ties to either Hamas or the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.The report further stated that around 50% of the UN agency’s employees in Gaza have at least one close relative with ties to the terror groups.The Associated Press said it saw an Israeli document alleging that at least 190 UNRWA workers were themselves Hamas or Islamic Jihad operatives, without providing evidence. It was not clear whether it was the same document.The latest accusations prompted UNRWA to announce on Friday that it had fired several employees over the unspecified accusations. Despite that move, since the announcement many donors including the US, Germany, Britain, Italy, Australia and Finland have suspended funding to the agency pending an investigation.A dossier provided to The Wall Street Journal by the US government on Monday examined the involvement of UNRWA employees in the October 7 terror onslaught, in which thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst into Israel from Gaza, slaughtering some 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages.According to the dossier, an UNRWA school counselor from Khan Younis in southern Gaza was suspected of working with his son to abduct a woman from Israel, while a social worker from the central Gaza city of Nuseirat was accused of helping snatch a dead Israeli soldier to Gaza.A third UNRWA employee was said by the New York Times to have taken part “in the massacre at a kibbutz where 97 people died” — apparently Kibbutz Be’eri, which was ravaged on October 7 in the Hamas-led attack.One other worker was said to have been tracked to the site of the Supernova music festival near Re’im, where 360 people were slaughtered, while others coordinated logistics and procured weapons ahead of and on October 7.According to the Reuters news agency, two of the alleged Hamas operatives cited in the dossier are described as “eliminated,” having been killed by Israeli forces. A 12th Palestinian whose name and picture are provided is said to have no factional membership and to have infiltrated Israel on October 7 independently as masses joined the terrorists raiding Israeli communities.Also on the list of the 12 men are an UNRWA teacher accused of arming himself with an anti-tank rocket, another teacher accused of filming a hostage, and the manager of a shop at an UNRWA school accused of opening a war room for Islamic Jihad.Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, a senior Israeli government official said: “UNRWA’s problem is not just a few bad apples involved in the October 7 massacre. The institution as a whole is a haven for Hamas’s radical ideology.”The accusations against UNRWA are the latest in a long line of Israeli complaints about the UN agency, such as that it allows anti-Israeli incitement to be taught in its hundreds of schools and that some of its staff collaborate with Hamas. The Trump administration suspended funding to the agency in 2018, but US President Joe Biden restored it.Supporters of the agency have claimed that the allegations against it aim to diminish the long-festering refugee issue and called the cut in funding collective punishment.Last week, UNRWA’s Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said he would appoint an independent entity to look into the claims — both “what is true or untrue” and “what is politically motivated.” He also said the accusations were hurting the agency’s already strained operations amid the humanitarian crisis caused by the war.There are today 58 designated refugee camps where UNRWA operates, in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Unlike most war refugees around the world, the agency recognizes as refugees descendants of those displaced in 1948 amid Israel’s War of Independence, regardless of their circumstances.Critics allege this has fostered and encouraged a decades-long culture of dependence and victimhood among Palestinians.On Monday, a spokesperson for the agency said that if funding is not restored, it will not be able to continue operations in Gaza and across the region beyond the end of February.Germany said in response that UNRWA is not the only source of humanitarian aid for Palestinians and that other avenues can be explored.The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has said that more than 26,000 people have been killed since the start of the war in Gaza, though these figures cannot be independently verified, and are believed to include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence of terror groups’ own rocket misfires.The IDF says it has killed over 9,000 terror operatives in Gaza, in addition to some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.The United Nations estimates that more than 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced as a result of the intensive ground operation and aerial bombardment carried out by Israel, which vowed to eradicate Hamas from Gaza and end its 16-year rule.As the war has pressed on, forcing civilians to move further and further south, people have become increasingly reliant on the humanitarian aid provided by UNRWA and many more have had to make their new homes inside shelters operated by the UN agency.

In front of an impassioned audience of thousands of right-wing activists, 11 government ministers and 15 coalition lawmakers pledged Sunday night to rebuild Jewish Israeli settlements in the heart of the Gaza Strip, with some also encouraging the emigration of the Palestinian population after the war with Hamas is over.Speaking amid a carnival-like atmosphere at the Jerusalem International Convention Center, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, the leader of the ultranationalist Religious Zionism party, extolled the virtues of creating new settlements, declaring: “God willing, we will settle and we will be victorious.”National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, leader of the extreme-right Otzma Yehudit party, told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was not present, and the audience that it was “time to return home to Gush Katif” — the name of the Israeli settlement bloc in Gaza that was evacuated in the 2005 Disengagement.Smotrich and Ben Gvir, together with six coalition MKs, signed what was dubbed the “Covenant of Victory and Renewal of Settlement,” which pledged that the signatories would “grow Jewish settlements full of life” in the Gaza Strip.Alongside them, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party also called for building settlements in Gaza and “encouraging voluntary emigration.”But Karhi went further than his fellow ministers, saying that the war imposed on Israel by the Hamas terror group meant that Gazan civilians could now be coerced into saying they want to leave the territory.Similarly, one banner in the crowd said, “Only a transfer [of Palestinians from Gaza] will bring peace.”Said Ben Gvir: “To encourage voluntarily, yes; to encourage voluntarily, you’re right. The first human patient received an implant from brain-chip startup Neuralink on Sunday and is recovering well, the company’s billionaire founder Elon Musk said.“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” Musk said in a post on the social media platform X on Monday.Spikes are activity by neurons, which the National Institute of Health describes as cells that use electrical and chemical signals to send information around the brain and to the body.The goal is to supercharge human capabilities, treat neurological disorders like ALS and Parkinson’s, and maybe one day achieve a symbiotic relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.The US Food and Drug Administration gave the company clearance last year to conduct its first trial to test its implant on humans, a critical milestone in the startup’s ambitions to help patients overcome paralysis and a host of neurological conditions.In September, Neuralink said it received approval for recruitment for the human trial.The study uses a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move, Neuralink said previously, adding that its initial goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.The implants’ “ultra-fine” threads help transmit signals in participants’ brains, Neuralink has said.Neuralink’s technology will mainly work through an implant called the “Link” — a device about the size of five stacked coins that is placed inside the human brain through invasive surgery.The first product from Neuralink would be called Telepathy, Musk said in a separate post on X.The device “Enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking. Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs.”“Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal,” he added referring to the acclaimed physicist who died in 2018. Hawking defied predictions he would only live for a few years after developing a form of motor neuron disease that left him confined to a wheelchair. He famously overcame its debilitating effects on his mobility and speech that left him paralyzed and able to communicate only via a computer speech synthesizer.The startup’s PRIME Study is a trial for its wireless brain-computer interface to evaluate the safety of the implant and surgical robot.Neuralink did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further details.The company has faced calls for scrutiny regarding its safety protocols. Reuters reported earlier this month that the company was fined for violating US Department of Transportation (DOT) rules regarding the movement of hazardous materials.Neuralink was valued at about $5 billion last June, but four lawmakers in late November asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether Musk had misled investors about the safety of its technology after veterinary records showed problems with the implants on monkeys included paralysis, seizures and brain swelling.Musk wrote in a social media post on September 10 that “no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant.” He added that the company chose “terminal” monkeys to minimize risk to healthy ones.Though he wins most of the headlines, Musk is hardly alone in trying to make advances in the field, which is officially known as brain-machine or brain-computer interface research.Hit with delays, the tycoon had reportedly reached out to join forces with implant developer Synchron about a potential investment.Unlike Neuralink’s Link, its implant version does not require cutting into the skull to install it.The Australia-based Synchron implanted its first device in a US patient in July 2022.

stinging and expensive rebuke to former US President Donald Trump for
his continued social media attacks against the longtime advice columnist
over her claims that he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan
department store.The award, coupled with a $5 million sexual assault and
defamation verdict last year from another jury in a case brought by
Carroll, raised to $88.3 million what Trump must pay her. Protesting
vigorously, he said he would appeal.Carroll, 80, clutched her lawyers’
hands and smiled as the seven-man, two-woman anonymous jury delivered
its verdict. Minutes later, she shared a weepy three-way hug with her
attorneys.She declined comment as she left the Manhattan federal
courthouse, but issued a statement later through a publicist, saying,
“This is a great victory for every woman who stands up when she’s been
knocked down, and a huge defeat for every bully who has tried to keep a
woman down.”Trump had attended the trial earlier in the day, but stormed
out of the courtroom during closing arguments by Carroll’s attorney. He
returned for his own attorney’s closing argument and for a portion of
the deliberations, but left the courthouse a half hour before the

it focused solely on damages.“While Donald Trump may not care about the
law, while he certainly doesn’t care about the truth, he does care about

what he says in court here today, he did it, as far as they’re

After
spending nearly three years seeking to hold Donald Trump and his allies
accountable for trying to overturn the 2020 election, the Fulton county
district attorney, Fani Willis, faces a series of imminent, critical
choices that could upend her consequential case against the former
president and 14 remaining co-defendants.“The stakes could hardly be
higher,” said Clark Cunningham, a law professor and ethics expert at
Georgia State University.Michael Roman, a seasoned Republican operative
and one of the defendants in the wide-ranging racketeering case, filed a
motion earlier this month seeking the disqualification of Willis and
Nathan Wade, an outside lawyer hired by Willis in 2021 to assist with
the Trump case. In court filings, Roman alleged Willis and Wade were in a
romantic relationship and Wade had used some of the more than $650,000
he earned from his work for her to pay for vacations for the two of
them. Bank records made public last week showed Wade had paid for
tickets for himself and Willis to California in 2023 and Miami in
2022.Neither Willis nor Wade has confirmed or denied a romantic
relationship yet, and Willis has said she will respond in a court filing
due on 2 February. A hearing on the request is set for 15 February.
Willis has said all of the special prosecutors she hired were paid the
same rate.While experts cautioned they were waiting for Willis and Wade
to respond to Roman’s claims, it has already caused a headache for
Willis, whose case has long been seen as one of the strongest efforts to
hold Trump accountable for 2020. Because the case is in Georgia state
court, it is also immune from Trump’s interference should he win the
election.“As a legal matter, I don’t see much of anything as of yet that
would make me think that a disqualification is likely,” said Anthony
Michael Kreis, a law professor at Georgia State University who has
closely followed the case. “In terms of the political bucket, it is both
an optics disaster, but it’s also been a lot of political malpractice
from the office for not responding. So this drip, drip, drip is a
problem.”A disqualification would upend the case against Trump and
significantly delay it. If the judge Scott McAfee were to disqualify
Willis’s office from handling the case, the executive director of the
Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia would appoint a replacement.
There’s no time limit on how long that could take. “It could entirely
derail the entire enterprise,” Kreis said.Wade was a municipal judge and
well-known lawyer in the Atlanta suburbs with little prosecutorial
experience before Willis hired him to work on the Trump case. The two
met in 2019 during a legal education course for judges, and he became a
confidante and mentor to Willis. Willis told the New York Times in 2022
that Wade was not a first choice to work on the prosecution team, but
that she approached him after other more experienced lawyers turned her
down. Wade was tepid, too, she told the Times, telling her he didn’t
have much prosecutorial experience. She eventually convinced him to join
the team. “I need someone I can trust,” she told the Times.Roman’s
accusation has prompted national interest in Wade’s ongoing divorce.
Willis was subpoenaed for a deposition as part of that case, but a judge
this week put off requiring her to testify.Regardless of what happens
legally, Trump is likely to use the salacious allegation to continue to
try to undermine Willis’s credibility. While his lawyers did not join
Roman’s motion, Trump has already weighed in.“When is the Great State of
Georgia dropping the FAKE LITIGATION against me and the others?
ELECTION INTERFERENCE! The case is a FRAUD, just like D.A. Fani Willis
and her ‘LOVER’,” he wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform on 20
January.Norman Eisen, a former “ethics czar” under Barack Obama, has
been supportive of Willis, and argued that disqualification isn’t
merited under Georgia law. Still, he has called for Wade to step
aside.“Questions about gifts and related matters go to Willis’s and
Wade’s obligations to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, and
have no connection to assuring the defendants a fair trial,” he wrote in
an essay in Just Security with the former US attorney Joyce White Vance
and Richard Painter, a former ethics czar under George W Bush.“Although
the Georgia law on disqualifying a prosecutor would permit Wade to
remain on the case as well, in our view he should voluntarily step down.
His continued presence will create a distraction, and his departure, in
addition to an on-the-record hearing in court, is the best path to
dispense with any lingering concerns,” they wrote.Willis has had a brush
with disqualification already. In July of 2022, when a special purpose
grand jury was still investigating the case, she held a political
fundraiser for Charlie Bailey, the Democratic opponent of Burt Jones,
the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, who served as a fake
elector for Trump in 2020. Jones was under investigation by the special
purpose grand jury at the time. Judge Robert CI McBurney disqualified
Willis’s office from handling any part of the case against Jones.“An
investigation of this significance, garnering the public attention it
necessarily does and touching so many political nerves in our society,
cannot be burdened by legitimate doubts about the District Attorney’s
motives,” McBurney wrote in his disqualification order. A replacement
special prosecutor still has not been appointed.McBurney also admonished
the DA’s office during a hearing, calling it “a ‘What are you
thinking?’ moment”.Stephen Gillers, a legal ethics expert at New York
University, agreed that there was no conduct identified in Roman’s
motion that would cause the indictment to be dismissed – an opinion
shared by other experts.“Indictments do not get dismissed because of
behavior like this. Nothing about the allegations suggests that the
indictment is in any way tainted,” he said in an interview.He also
agreed that Willis’s conduct likely would not result in
disqualification. And the fact that Wade was paid a high hourly rate was
not in itself grounds for him to be disqualified. “Every lawyer who
bills by the hour has that interest. Hourly billing is quite common
nationally. So of course the lawyer has an interest in a continuation of
a case,” he said.Still, Gillers said he was concerned by the vagueness
of the invoices Wade had submitted and that were approved by the Fulton
county district attorney’s office. They would not pass muster at most
government agencies or corporations, he said.“They’re generic, they are
in whole numbers. Eight hours, six hours, seven hours. They don’t break
down the particular tasks that were done. For someone like me, looking
at that, that’s a red flag,” he said.“In my view, he has to step aside,
unless the board of commissioners or other Fulton county official,
knowing all the facts, approves of the arrangement, and designates
someone other than Willis to review Wade’s bills,” he continued. “His
position is tainted by the romantic relationship unless there is
informed consent from the appropriate authority in Fulton county.”By
filing the allegations as part of the court case, and not directly with a
disciplinary body, Roman may have made a strategic decision to try and
muddy the legal issues in the case, understanding the optics for Willis
would look bad, he added.Cunningham said he was waiting for more
information to evaluate the merits of Roman’s disqualification claim.

UNRWA fired several staff members for their alleged involvement in

UNRWA will not be a part of the day after,” Katz said on X, formerly
Twitter.Katz added that he would try to gather support for the move from
the United States, European Union and other major donors to the agency,
several of whom have suspended funding in the wake of the

refugee issue, obstructs peace, and serves as a civilian arm of Hamas in
