ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.
JOEL 3:2 (WW3 OCCURS WHEN JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED)
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people (ISRAEL) and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.(JERUSALEM)(WW3 STARTS BECAUSE JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED AND ISRAELIS UPROOTED FROM THEIR GOD GIVIN LAND BRINGS 3 DEAD BILLION IN WW3)

GENESIS 25:20-26
20 And Isaac was forty years old (A BIBLE GENERATION NUMBER=1967 + 40=2007+) when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children (2 NATIONS IN HER-ISRAEL-ARABS) struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels;(ISRAEL AND THE ARABS) and the one people shall be stronger than the other people;(ISRAEL STRONGER THAN ARABS) and the elder shall serve the younger.(LITERALLY ISRAEL THE YOUNGER RULES (ISSAC)(JACOB-LATER NAME CHANGED TO ISRAEL) OVER THE OLDER ARABS (ISHMAEL)(ESAU)
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.(THE OLDER AN ARAB)
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob:(THE YOUNGER-ISRAELI) and Isaac was threescore (60) years old when she bare them.(1967 + 60=2027)(COULD BE THE LAST GENERATION WHEN JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED AMOUNG THE 2 TWINS)(THE 2 TWINS WANT JERUSALEM-THE DIVISION OF JERUSALEM TODAY)(AND WHOS IN CONTROL OF JERUSALEM TODAY-THE YOUNGER ISSAC-JACOB-ISRAEL)(AND WHO WANTS JERUSALEM DIVIDED-THE OLDER,ESAU-ISHMAEL (THE ARABS)
ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
1 THESSALONIANS 5:3
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
HOSEA 4:1-3
11 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2 I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)
Over 60,000 rally in Jerusalem against judicial overhaul, with thousands more en route-Israelis wave flags during protest against plans by Prime Minister Benjamin-feb 13,23
At least 60,000 protesters are demonstrating against the contentious judicial overhaul plan outside the Knesset in Jerusalem. The crowds have stretched from the Knesset, past the Supreme Court and all along Yoel Zusman Street. Many of the main traffic routes into Jerusalem are snarled up as convoys of vehicles carrying thousands more protesters continue to make their way to the capital, Channel 12 reports.Thousands more have rallied in other cities and towns around the country. The Jerusalem crowd has heard addresses from Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, National Unity head Benny Gantz and Labor leader Merav Michaeli.“We will not stay quiet,” Lapid says. “We will not stay quiet as they destroy everything that is precious and sacred to us.”The government is advancing legislation that would overhaul the legal system, significantly curbing the High Court of Justice’s power to exercise judicial review, allowing lawmakers to overrule court rulings with a bare majority and allowing government ministers to appoint their own legal advisers.Earlier, the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee approved for its first reading in the Knesset plenum the first part of the plan, which would give the government full control over the Judicial Selection Committee.

Iranian policeman rebuked for refusing to enforce mandatory hijab rule-Authorities say officer received ‘warnings and training’ after video posted online shows him rejecting a woman’s plea to arrest another woman who wasn’t wearing headscarf-y AFP-feb 13,23-Today, 1:04 pm
TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian police officer has been reprimanded after he did not enforce the country’s dress code requiring women to cover their hair, local media reported Monday.A video was widely shared on social media in recent days, showing a police officer in the western province of Kermanshah telling a woman that he did not consider the hijab, or headscarf, to be compulsory for women.“This lady wants to go out in this outfit… it’s none of my business,” the officer is heard saying in response to a woman asking him to confront another woman for not wearing the hijab.“After a thorough investigation… the officer was summoned… and received the necessary warnings and training,” the Tasnim news agency said Monday, citing a statement from the police of Kermanshah province. The incident comes against the backdrop of a nationwide protest movement triggered by the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old ethnic Kurd who had been arrested for an alleged breach of the same dress code for women.Hundreds of people, including security personnel, have been killed and thousands arrested during the protests, which the authorities often describe as “riots.” #BehnamZarei is an Iranian #police officer who refused to arrest a woman for not wearing the mandatory hijab. He said that as a policeman, he has the duty to defend the lives, property, and honor of his compatriots, and the type of clothing is a personal matter.#MahsaAmini pic.twitter.com/O4jlZpp0FN-Since the start of the protests, women have increasingly been seen without the hijab in public places, in many cases without eliciting a reaction from the police. But in January, local media reported that the police had resumed enforcement of hijab-wearing in cars, with violators receiving a text message warning from the police.
IDF: Israeli jets strike underground Hamas facility in central Gaza-Military says attack on weapons site came in response to rocket fire Saturday; anti-aircraft missiles launched at IAF aircraft, setting off alarms in border towns-By Emanuel Fabian and ToI Staff-feb 13,23-Today, 4:34 am
Israeli fighter jets targeted an underground weapons facility in the central Gaza Strip in the predawn hours of Monday in response to a rocket launch from the Palestinian enclave on Saturday evening, the military said. The Israel Defense Forces said the targeted facility produced raw materials for manufacturing rockets and was run by the Hamas terror group.“The strike deals a serious blow to Hamas’s ability to fortify and arm itself,” the IDF said in a statement.Israel considers Hamas, which rules the Strip, responsible for any attack emanating from the enclave regardless of whether the group was behind it.Shortly after the military confirmed the attack, incoming rocket warning sirens blared in southern Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip, including Sderot and Kibbutz Nir Am. The alert also sounded in Kibbutz Ruhama, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of Sderot. The IDF said four anti-aircraft missiles were fired toward Israeli aircraft and Israeli territory, three of which exploded mid-air. The Sderot municipality said falling shrapnel damaged several cars in the city. The fourth projectile landed in an open field, causing no injuries or damage. The military said Israeli tanks on the Gaza border fired on a number of Hamas military observation posts in retaliation. It provided a short video of one of these attacks. The Israeli bombing came more than a day after the military said a single rocket from Gaza was downed by the Iron Dome air defense system, on Saturday evening.Despite the overnight tensions, the military gave the okay for school in communities near the border to go ahead as normal, indicating further hostilities were not expected. The rocket fire came amid heightened tensions in the region, and a day after three Israelis — including two young siblings aged five and seven — were killed in a car-ramming terror attack in East Jerusalem on Friday.Tensions have been high as the IDF has pressed on with an anti-terror offensive mostly focused on the northern West Bank to deal with a series of attacks that have left 31 people in Israel dead in 2022, and another ten since the beginning of the year. Late last month, a Palestinian terrorist killed seven Israelis in shooting attack near a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Neve Yaakov neighborhood. The IDF’s operation in the West Bank has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left 171 Palestinians dead in 2022, and another 45 since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians. The military said in its statement Monday that it holds Hamas responsible for “security violations” carried out in Gaza against the State of Israel.

Turkey-Syria quake live briefing: Death toll passes 36,000; key Turkish airport reopens to aid shipments-By Annabelle Timsit-and -Kelly Kasulis Cho-Updated February 13, 2023 at 4:33 a.m. EST|Published February 13, 2023 at 3:23 a.m. EST
One week after devastating earthquakes tore through southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, aid groups say help has been slow to reach the people of Syria, with pressure mounting on global leaders to overcome the logistical and political challenges caused by the country’s civil war. The death toll in both countries passed 36,000 on Monday, and tens of thousands of survivors have been left injured or homeless. Are you on Telegram? Subscribe to our channel for the latest updates on Russia’s war in Ukraine. In Turkey, a key airport near the epicenter whose runway was damaged in the quakes has begun to operate again, in a possible boon to authorities and aid groups leading rescue and recovery efforts. Here’s the latest on the aftermath of the earthquakes:1. Key developments-The death toll across Syria and Turkey rose to 36,217 on Monday. In Turkey, 31,643 people were recorded dead, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said. In the government-controlled portion of Syria, 1,414 people have died, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The rebel-run Syrian Salvation Government’s Health Ministry reported 3,160 deaths.Hatay Airport reopened after damage from the earthquakes was repaired, adding a key port for aid deliveries and evacuations to the devastated region. Airmen in uniform were seen unloading a small mountain of cardboard boxes containing mattresses and blankets Sunday night, footage on Turkey’s TRT World broadcaster showed. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations urged the U.N. Security Council to authorize more border crossings to northwestern Syria, a rebel-controlled area. Linda Thomas-Greenfield called on the council to expedite the aid process by opening two additional border crossings into northwestern Syria. “People in the affected areas are counting on us. They are appealing to our common humanity to help in their moment of need,” she said in a statement Sunday. “We cannot let them down.”Trucks hauling U.N. relief supplies entered northwestern Syria in a “scale-up of convoys” coming from a center at the Turkish border, U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said in a Sunday tweet. A total of 52 U.N. trucks entered Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing from Thursday through Monday, a U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs spokeswoman, Madevi Sun-Suon, said by email Monday. 2. Aid efforts-About 26 million people across Turkey and Syria have been affected by the earthquakes, with dozens of medical facilities damaged, the World Health Organization said in a recent report, which makes an appeal for nearly $42.8 million in immediate aid. At least 15 hospitals in Turkey have suffered damage, the report added, while 48 health facilities in northwestern Syria have been affected.Aid from Indonesia has arrived in Turkey as part of a continuing flow of global support to the country, according to Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu news agency. Planes carrying rescue personnel and equipment landed early Monday at Adana Airport, west of the most affected parts of Turkey, Anadolu reported.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday. Von der Leyen promised to mobilize “additional support” to respond to Turkey’s request for blankets, tents and heaters, according to a readout of their call. She also promised to partner with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to mobilize funds at a conference organized with Turkish officials, which will take place in Brussels in March.Kelly T. Clements, the U.N. deputy high commissioner for refugees, met with Syrian officials to discuss cooperation and aid. Social Affairs Minister Mohamed Seif El-Din said in a news release that they discussed the possibility of using the U.N. cash transfer program established for Syrian refugees displaced by the war to support earthquake victims.Teen rescued after being trapped under ruble for six days-3. Rescue operations-Nearly 4,500 search and rescue operations are underway in Turkey, and about 400 have been completed, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said in a news conference. “We have been experiencing the largest disaster in history,” he added, through an interpreter. “We are working very hard to manage it.” Fuat Oktay, Turkey’s vice president, said the country has about 34,700 people working on rescue operations.United Hatzalah, an Israeli search-and-rescue group, announced that it is leaving Turkey over a “concrete and immediate threat” to security after just six days, Israeli media reported, citing Dov Maisel, the group’s vice president of operations. The group arrived in the country on Feb. 7 and helped extract survivors from the rubble in Kahramanmaras, Turkey.A 44-year-old woman was extracted alive from ruins 165 hours after the earthquakes in Turkey’s Adiyaman province, footage aired on TRT World shows. Surviving more than 130 hours in the rubble “becomes more and more remarkable without any access to water,” Christopher Colwell, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, told The Washington Post.A Syrian investigator who exposed wartime injustices died in the earthquakes, the Commission for International Justice and Accountability said. Known as Mustafa, the lawyer exposed the killing of civilians in the Syrian city of Homs in 2012, the CIJA said in a statement.Fadi al-Halabi, a cinematographer for the Oscar-winning documentary short “The White Helmets,” said 13 members of his family died. “My family is gone,” he wrote on Facebook, sharing photos of children posing at a picnic and in front of ocean waves. 4. 2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

Abbas says PA to request full UN membership, cites ‘battle raging over Jerusalem’ Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speaks during the Arab League's "Summit for Jerusalem" in Cairo, on February 12, 2023. (Ahmad Hassan/AFP)
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speaks during the Arab League's "Summit for Jerusalem" in Cairo, on February 12, 2023. (Ahmad Hassan/AFP)
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says the PA will ask the United Nations this week to grant full membership to the “State of Palestine.”
The comments, which Abbas makes during a meeting a meeting on Jerusalem held at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo, come as the US has urged both Israel and the Palestinians to refrain from unilateral moves amid a recent spike in violence that has included a number of deadly terror attacks on Israelis and gun battles between IDF troops and Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank.Abbas says the Palestinians will urge the UN to call on Israel to halt unilateral actions, specifically citing settlement construction, and to “adhere to the signed agreements and resolutions of international legitimacy,” according to a statement carried by the PA’s official Wafa news agency.“Supporting Jerusalem and strengthening the steadfastness of those staying there and in its environs is a religious duty and a humanitarian and national imperative,” he is quoted as saying. He continues: “The battle raging over Jerusalem did not only begin on the day of its occupation in 1967, but several decades prior to that, and even before the Balfour Declaration which was issued by the colonial powers, led by Britain and America.”Abbas claims the 1917 declaration, in which Britain’s government backed the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel, was aimed at “getting rid of the Jews in Europe and establishing the so-called Jewish national home in Palestine, to be an outpost to safeguard the interests of these colonial countries.”“Just as our people rejected the Balfour Declaration and its results, we also rejected all attempts to liquidate our cause or falsify the facts about it,” he says.
PM: Cabinet to order ‘broader action’ against East Jerusalem, West Bank terror-Netanyahu says government will also ‘strengthen settlements’ in response to deadly attack; rails against civil disobedience and nationwide strike in response to judicial overhaul-By ToI Staff-FEB 12,23-Today, 2:29 pm
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that ministers would decide on “broader action” against terrorists after three Israelis were killed in a ramming attack in Jerusalem on Friday.“The cabinet will convene today to prepare for even broader action against the perpetrators of terrorism and their supporters in East Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, while avoiding harm to those not involved as much as possible,” Netanyahu said, using the biblical term for the West Bank.“Also today, the government will authorize the strengthening of settlements in our country, which the terrorists are trying to uproot,” he added, without giving further details.Netanyahu also said that legislation would be passed in the coming days that would revoke the citizenship or residency of convicted terrorists who are remunerated by the Palestinian Authority.“I say this again because this is our policy: The appropriate answer to terrorism is to strike it hard and deepen our roots in our country even more,” he said. The premier did not mention Gaza. In an unusual step, the military did not launch airstrikes on the Strip overnight in reaction to a projectile that was launched from the territory on Saturday, possibly indicating Israel is seeking to avoid an escalation of violence.Three people were killed on Friday when Hussein Qaraqa rammed his car into a group of people standing at a bus stop in Jerusalem’s Ramot neighborhood: 6-year-old Yaakov Yisrael Paley and 20-year-old Alter Shlomo Lederman, were killed on the spot, and Paley’s older brother Asher Menahem Paley, 8, was critically hurt and died Saturday of his wounds.Following the attack, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir released a statement saying he’d told police to gear up for a major operation Sunday, evoking a famous 2002 military campaign against West Bank terror groups. However, Ben Gvir lacks the authority to approve such a move on his own and his comments were dismissed by a senior government official who told multiple Hebrew media outlets anonymously that “decisions of such a scale are not made in statements by one minister or another on a sidewalk at the scene of an attack.”Channel 12 reported that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had been caught by surprise by Ben Gvir’s statements. But on Saturday night, Ben Gvir posted a tweet reiterating his initial statement, saying he was “determined” to launch a major operation.Eyewitnesses to Friday’s attack said Qaraqa accelerated into a group of Israelis waiting at a bus stop. A senior Israeli official said it was believed he was mentally ill, and that he had been released from a psychiatric hospital in northern Israel only days before.Yaakov Yisrael Paley, 6 (right) and Asher Menahem Paley, 8, killed in deadly car-ramming terror attack near Ramot Junction in Jerusalem on February 10, 2023. (Twitter)-On Sunday, Israeli forces sealed Qaraqa’s parents’ home ahead of a potential full demolition; the attacker’s residence was not sealed as he lived in a rental. Home demolitions are a controversial measure that the Israeli security establishment maintains can deter future terror attacks. Critics say that the tool is a form of collective punishment.Tensions have been high as the IDF has pressed on with an anti-terror offensive mostly focused on the northern West Bank to deal with a series of attacks that have left 31 people in Israel dead in 2022, and another 10 since the beginning of the year. The IDF’s operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left 171 Palestinians dead in 2022, and another 43 since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians. There has also been a rise in revenge attacks by Israelis against Palestinians following the two terror attacks.‘Nobody should force a strike’In his comments Sunday, Netanyahu also addressed the judicial overhaul being pushed by his hardline government in the face of mass public protests and criticism from leading jurists, economists and former security officials.A first reading of some of the controversial proposals is set for Monday; a bill must pass three readings to become law, and the coalition has indicated it seeks to blitz the legislation through the Knesset by April.“The government received the people’s trust in democratic elections and received a clear mandate from the citizens of Israel. No one here can dispute that,” Netanyahu said.“Nobody disputes the right to demonstrate either, but nobody should call for violence, to act with violence, to call for civil unrest, or to force a strike on many who do not want it,” he said.A nationwide strike is set to take place on Monday to coincide with the first rounds of voting on the legislation, an escalation in the demonstrations against the contentious proposals. There will also be a mass rally outside the Knesset in Jerusalem at midday, as well as concurrent protests in other cities.Netanyahu’s coalition has prioritized the dramatic judicial restructuring that would increase government control over the judiciary.According to a poll aired by Channel 12 news on Friday, just one in four Israelis support the government moving forward with the proposed overhaul legislation in its current form.As presented by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the coalition’s proposals would severely restrict the High Court’s capacity to strike down laws and government decisions, with an “override clause” enabling the Knesset to re-legislate struck-down laws with a bare majority of 61; give the government complete control over the selection of judges; prevent the court from using a test of “reasonableness” to judge legislation and government decisions; and allow ministers to appoint their own legal advisers, instead of getting counsel from advisers operating under the aegis of the Justice Ministry.Critics say that along with other planned legislation, the sweeping reforms will impact Israel’s democratic character by upsetting its system of checks and balances, granting almost all power to the executive branch, and leaving individual rights unprotected and minorities undefended. Netanyahu has pushed back against the criticism.
UN envoy: Israel and Palestinian violence at critical point-Published-3 February-Tor Wennesland-By Tom Bateman.
The UN envoy in Jerusalem has warned that surging violence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories has brought the situation to "the brink".In a BBC interview, Tor Wennesland called for "firm" diplomatic intervention to stem the bloodshed. He also warned of further deterioration due to declining international support for the Palestinian Authority (PA)."The UN cannot take over this responsibility, we cannot govern Palestine," he said.In the last month, more than 35 Palestinians and seven Israelis have been killed, following a year of spiralling violence involving near-nightly Israeli military search and arrest raids and a spate of Palestinian attacks. It comes with the most radically nationalist government in Israel's history now in power, which has declared the principle of "exclusive" Jewish rights to all the land.Meanwhile, a crisis-gripped PA, which governs to a limited extent parts of the West Bank, has been losing control of the cities of Jenin and Nablus to a new generation of armed militants. Many observers fear a final demise of prospects for a so-called two-state solution - the long standing international formula for peace.Mr Wennesland is the UN's special co-ordinator for the Middle East peace process, a post created during the breakthrough Oslo agreements of the 1990s. It now sees him frequently shuttling between Israeli, Palestinian and regional officials, trying to de-escalate crises and violent flare-ups, while hopes of a longer-term peace are moribund.Mr Wennesland accepted there were "difficult" diplomatic conditions, given the "political situation… on the Israeli side" and the "complicated situation" with the Palestinian leadership. But the envoy dismissed the suggestion that the peace process was dead."Whatever government we have in Israel, whatever authority we have in Ramallah, this is the point of departure where this discussion needs to take place," he said."We are very well aware of the agreements made in the formation of the Israeli government. I mean, diplomacy cannot stop there.""The engagement we have seen over the last days and weeks is very good. It's high time and maybe it's even a little bit late. We should have started before."Mr Wennesland said the UN was shouldering increasing responsibility towards the PalestiniansInternational efforts towards a long-term solution have been stalled for nearly a decade. The Trump administration put forward a plan, now abandoned, which would have seen Palestinians given municipal control of pockets of the West Bank along with the Gaza Strip, with Israel given full security control. The fallout from the plan's announcement sparked violence on the ground and saw the Palestinians cut off nearly all ties with the US.Meanwhile, human rights groups increasingly call on the international community to acknowledge a "one-state" reality for Palestinians living under Israel's military occupation, now into its 56th year.Mr Wennesland's interview with the BBC follows this week's visit to the region by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who called for a rapid de-escalation in violence. The UN envoy said there was now "active diplomacy" involving the Americans, the UN and Israeli and Palestinian officials.Asked whether this would lead to fewer Israeli military raids or a restoration of PA control in parts of the West Bank, he said: "The American side is in very specific discussions with [the Israelis]."There are plans that can be rolled out. So these paradigms may change. And I said there needs to be a space for the Palestinian security forces to operate."The key factor here is that the parties are not nursing their unilateral decisions… if we are going to keep the situation under control," he said.He called on Israel to "firmly deal" with the issue of expansion of Israeli settlements and settler violence in the West Bank. He also said that Palestinian security forces needed to be able to regain control in the cities of Jenin and Nablus. He urged a full resumption of so-called security co-ordination between Israel and the PA, which President Mahmoud Abbas last week announced he was cancelling."There are contacts, but we just had a discussion with the Palestinians on this yesterday. It is not happening in the way it has happened before. They have formally stopped it. It needs to get going again," he said. The envoy said stability was also threatened by the worsening situation of the Palestinian Authority, saying some governments who helped fund it had "checked out"."There is hardly any money coming in from donors to the PA and that needs to change."If you cannot pay salaries to public employees, if you cannot deliver health services, if you cannot buy medicine, if you cannot get the schools [funded], then we are in a very dire situation," he said, adding that UN funding was already about $1bn (£830m) alone in Gaza, which is controlled by the Palestinian militant group Hamas."We have significant programmes in the West Bank as well. But the UN cannot take over this responsibility. We cannot govern Palestine. We have no option or alternative to having a functional PA."
The Abraham Accords
The Abraham Accords are a series of treaties normalizing diplomatic relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, facilitated by the U.S. Administration[1] between August and December, 2020. In the span of five short months, these four Arab states joined Egypt and Jordan in making peace with Israel. The agreements were called “The Abraham Accords” in honor of Abraham - the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam[2].
The Abraham Accords began with the groundbreaking Israel-UAE agreement in August, 2020. The UAE and Israel have never fought militarily, but the UAE did participate in the Arab League boycott against Israel, which had been in place since Israel’s establishment in 1948[3]. The agreement was the result of shared interests regarding threats posed by Iran’s regime and years of quiet/secret cooperation. Israel opened an international diplomatic office in UAE in 2015[4], Mossad chief Yossi Cohen made several secret trips there, and the two governments cooperated to fight the coronavirus pandemic[5]. Both countries are interested in diversifying their economies and engaging with each other to achieve that goal.[6] Israel agreed to freeze its plans for annexation/application of sovereignty in the West Bank as part of the deal[7]. The agreement has led not only to diplomatic ties, but also cultural exchanges and grassroots cooperation between people in both countries. Since the accords were signed in September, 130,000 Israelis have visited Dubai[8] and trade between Israel and the UAE has reached 1 billion AED[9]. In a move widely seen as tied to the Abraham Accords, the U.S. agreed to sell advanced F35 warplanes to the UAE[10]. This raised concerns among Israeli security officials that these planes could be used to threaten Israel in the future. U.S. and Israeli officials have discussed the issue and seem to have reached an understanding about ensuring Israel can effectively defend itself.
Israel and Bahrain announced a similar agreement in September, 2020[11].
They initially signed a declaration of peace, agreeing to normalize diplomatic relations, negotiate a formal peace treaty, and not antagonize each other. Officials from the two countries then began working together on the details of how they would cooperate in various areas. Similar to the UAE, there was longtime quiet cooperation between Israel and Bahrain. The King of Bahrain denounced the Arab League boycott of Israel in 2017[12]. In 2020, Bahrain hosted the “peace to prosperity” conference[13], which was led by the U.S. Administration and boycotted by Palestinian leaders. The UAE and Bahrain have since announced they would cooperate with Israel to present a unified front to the U.S. regarding the Iran nuclear deal and the Iranian regime’s ballistic missile program[14].Israel and Sudan signed a normalization agreement in October, 2020. This agreement is more complicated than the others because Sudan's government is going through a transition with the stated goal of becoming more democratic[15]. There are some difficulties in implementing a normalization agreement, namely that Sudan must first repeal a domestic law that prohibits relations with Israel. Progress has also been slowed by opposition from some groups in Sudan and a precarious transition in the government[16].Israel and Morocco announced a normalization agreement in December, 2020[17]. Morocco had quiet diplomatic relations with Israel prior to open normalization[18]. This was partly based on the long history of Jews in Morocco, many of whom fled the country to Israel[19]. The Moroccan government has made efforts to preserve Jewish history and welcome Moroccan Jews who visit the country. The U.S. recognized Morocco’s claims to the disputed territory of Western Sahara, as an incentive for the Moroccan government to normalize relations with Israel[20]. This was a controversial decision and it is unclear if the Biden Administration will adopt the same stance.Palestinian leaders strongly condemned the Abraham Accords. The Palestinian Authority called the UAE-Israel agreement a total betrayal and attacked the UAE[21]. Hamas reacted as expected, saying the agreement “served the Zionist narrative” and that Arab states should continue to engage in anti-normalization[22]. These statements led to backlash in the Arab world, including a lengthy interview by former Saudi Ambassador to the U.S., Prince Bandar bin Sultan, levelling unprecedent and harsh public criticism of against the Palestinian leadership[23]. According to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, 80 percent of Palestinians “describe their feelings towards [the Abraham Accords] as: treason, abandonment, and insult.” [24]Dennis Ross, a former Middle East peace envoy for the U.S., wrote that the UAE’s move “should also signal to Palestinians that others are not going to wait for them” to make peace with Israel[25].Other Arab and Muslim states such as Oman, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia are rumored to be considering normalization with Israel as well.

THE ABRAHAM ACCORDS THE DIVISION OF JERUSALEM.
The Abraham Accords are a catalyst for wider change in the Middle East-“The Abraham Accords were based on a simple premise: that diplomacy and communication would promote greater stability, prosperity, and hope. Today, we can say with great confidence that the premise was correct."We are building a brighter future together by expanding opportunities for our peoples, and people across the region.“Over the past two years, our belief in peace has seen us achieve countless milestones. We have turned plans into concrete action, and developed a thriving relationship to help us accomplish our shared strategic objectives. We will continue this work as we deepen the Accords, and spread their inclusive vision of a regional community for progress.”—Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan (15 September 2022)

Full text of the Abraham Accords signed by Israel, the UAE and Bahrain-Trump signed the document as a witness, as Netanyahu joined with the foreign ministers of the UAE and Bahrain at the White House-By ToI Staff-16 September 2020, 1:47 am
Israel on Tuesday signed separate bilateral normalization agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. All three countries also signed a trilateral document, dubbed the “Abraham Accords” after the patriarch of the world’s three major monotheistic religions. US President Donald Trump signed as a witness. This is the texts of the Abraham Accords:The Abraham Accords Declaration-We, the undersigned, recognize the importance of maintaining and strengthening peace in the Middle East and around the world based on mutual understanding and coexistence, as well as respect for human dignity and freedom, including religious freedom. We encourage efforts to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue to advance a culture of peace among the three Abrahamic religions and all humanity. We believe the the best way to address challenges is through cooperation and dialogue and that developing friendly relations among states advances the interests of lasting peace in the Middle East and around the world. We seek tolerance and respect for every person in order to make this world a place where all can enjoy a life of dignity and hope, no matter their race, faith or ethnicity. We support science, art, medicine, and commerce to inspire humankind, maximize human potential and bring nations closer together. We seek to end radicalization and conflict to provide all children a better future. We pursue a vision of peace, security, and prosperity in the Middle East and around the world. In this spirit, we warmly welcome and are encouraged by the progress already made in establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and its neighbors in the region under the principles of the Abraham Accords. We are encouraged by the ongoing efforts to consolidate and expand such friendly relations based on shared interests and a shared commitment to a better future. The Abraham Accords Declaration (White House)

(AFP) https://arab.news/y87z3-Updated 16 September 2022-Lucas Chapman-September 16, 2022 21:48- As part of the deal with the UAE, Israel pledged to suspend its plans to annex occupied Palestinian territories-Two years on, even the agreement’s signatories doubt whether it has changed Israel’s behavior for the better.
WASHINGTON D.C.: Two years ago this week, the UAE and Bahrain formalized the peace deals they had reached with Israel the previous month by signing the Abraham Accords at the White House, in a ceremony overseen by then US President Donald Trump. As Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed and Abdullatif Al-Zayani, respectively the UAE and Bahrain’s foreign ministers, and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put their signatures on the document on Sept. 15, 2020, the moment was hailed as the beginning of a new era of Middle East diplomacy. As part of the agreement, Israel said it would suspend its plans to annex occupied Palestinian territories. Sheikh Abdullah said that the UAE remained committed to a two-state solution and that its support for the Palestinian cause was “unshakable.”The prospect of immediate economic and diplomatic benefits prompted Sudan to normalize relations with Israel in October 2020. The North African country became a signatory to the Abraham Accords in January 2021, around the same time it was removed from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list.Morocco normalized its relations with Israel two months after Sudan did, with Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz signing a security agreement with his Moroccan counterpart in November 2021. Israel recognised Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for establishing ties. Two years on from the Abraham Accords signing ceremony on the White House lawn, it is now possible to assess some of the outcomes of the agreement, such as how it has affected bilateral ties and who stands to benefit most from them, in a logical and dispassionate manner.Apart from diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation, Israel and the Abraham Accords signatories were expected to collaborate on a number of shared interests, including energy, agriculture, tourism, security and technological innovation.Israeli and Bahraini government officials have been interacting with each other publicly since the signing of the accords. Israel began importing aluminum from Bahrain, and the two countries are planning to sign an agreement that allows the transshipment of goods arriving by sea in Bahrain onto planes heading to Israel.Last year Israel’s Prime Minister Yair Lapid, the foreign minister at the time, made the first ministerial visit to Bahrain, where he inaugurated the Embassy of Israel in Manama. In February this year, Gantz became the first Israeli defense minister to ever officially visit the Gulf country. He was accompanied by several top military and security officials, including the Israeli navy chief.Gantz signed a memorandum of understanding with his Bahraini counterpart, formalizing a security relationship that his office claimed would “help advance intelligence cooperation, a framework for exercises, and cooperation between the countries’ defense industries.” Gantz’ visit came as the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, launched its biennial International Maritime Exercise 2022. The Israeli Navy took part in the drill, for the first time publicly joining Arab and Muslim countries with which Israel does not have diplomatic relations. With regard to Morocco and Israel, today the two countries cooperate in such areas as education, tourism, cross-border investment, renewable energy and security. Morocco has a strong Jewish tradition with many historic Jewish buildings, monuments and cemeteries, as well as the largest Jewish community in an Arab country. Israel, meanwhile, is home to one of the largest Moroccan expatriate communities. An 84 percent year-on-year growth in Morocco’s trade with Israel to $41.6 million is viewed by the two countries as the beginning of a valuable new trading relationship. Israeli technical know-how combined with capital from the Abraham Accord partners, Bahrain and the UAE, could turbocharge Morocco’s moves to diversify away from fossil fuels .By contrast, the full agreement between Israel and Sudan has yet to come to full fruition because of instability and the October 2021 coup. In May the Biden administration suspended development, trade and investment assistance to Sudan, including food aid related to its normalization deal with Israel, such as wheat shipments.Predictably, trade and commerce between Israel and the UAE has flourished since the normalization of relations two years ago. In May this year, the two countries signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that is expected to increase bilateral trade to more than $10 billion within five years, and add $1.9 billion to the UAE’s gross domestic product by 2030.On June 27, Amir Hayek, Israel’s ambassador to the UAE, said in a message posted on Twitter that total trade volume between the two countries for the first five months of the year reached a value of $912.1 million, compared with $399.5 million during the same period last year.Palestinian and other activists raise national flags as they face Israeli security forces, during a demonstration against Jewish settlements. (AFP)Israel and the UAE have also signed multi-billion-dollar deals in the fields of medicine, bilateral investment and space travel over the past two years. In July, the US, Israel, the UAE and India announced the formation of a new bloc, I2U2, with the aim of enhancing technological collaboration in the region and tackling transnational challenges in six main areas: Water, energy, transportation, space, health and food security.Tourism between the UAE and Israel has also expanded rapidly since 2020. Commercial flights between the two nations began in November 2020, with daily flights introduced the following year. Tourism websites aimed at attracting Arab visitors to Israel encourage them to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem’s Muslim Quarter, in addition to the Museum of Islamic Art.The flow of tourists in the opposite direction has been even more substantial. Between 2020 and 2021, about 230,000 Israelis visited the UAE, despite pandemic restrictions. The increase in tourism between Israel and the UAE has, however, exposed the wide gulf that separates the two societies. In August many Arab and Israeli news outlets reported that Israeli police had briefly arrested two Emirati tourists after a shooting in Tel Aviv.Though the pair were released and received an apology from the officers who arrested them, many social media users suggested that the Israeli police had racially profiled the tourists, mistaking them for Palestinians. One Twitter user said that “if you are Arab, Israel will always treat you like a suspect.”The alleged arrest of the Emiratis is not the only reason Arabs worldwide have questioned whether normalization agreements will encourage the hardliners in positions of power in Israel to adopt a more reasonable stance toward Palestinians and the holy sites in Jerusalem.Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s former intelligence chief and a former ambassador to London and Washington, has expressed doubts that Arab normalization efforts with Israel will lead to improved rights for Palestinians.“The Palestinian people are still occupied; they are still being imprisoned by the Israeli government. Attacks and assassinations of Palestinian individuals take place almost on a daily basis,” he told the Arab News talk show “Frankly Speaking” in May.“The stealing of Palestinian land by Israel continues despite assurances that Israel gave to the signatories of the peace (accord) between the UAE and Israel. So, there is no sign whatsoever that appeasing Israel is going to change their attitude.”In July, citing a poll carried out by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, which asked residents of Arab countries about their views on Arab-Israeli normalization, UAE academic Abdulkhaleq Abdulla said Emiratis view the normalization process in a negative light. The 2022 poll found that only one in four Emiratis surveyed considered the improved ties to be a positive development. In the lead-up to the signing of the Abraham Accords, Yousef Al-Otaiba, the UAE ambassador to the US, writing in the Israeli news website Ynetnews, said: “In the UAE and across much of the Arab world, we would like to believe Israel is an opportunity, not an enemy. We face too many common dangers and see the great potential of warmer ties. Israel’s decision on annexation will be an unmistakable signal of whether it sees it the same way.”Two years on, following two military offensives against Gaza, few Arabs are probably under the illusion that the normalization initiatives under the Abraham Accords have changed Israel’s behavior, much less ended its policy on the annexation of Palestinian land.Repeated calls by the Arab League for an end to Israeli violations of the sanctity of the holy sites in Jerusalem, a halt to the violence and the restoration of calm appear to have fallen on deaf ears.Attacks by Israeli security forces on Muslim worshippers in Al-Aqsa Mosque and permission for Jewish prayers at the holy site are viewed by the Arab League as a flagrant provocation to Muslims everywhere.Participating in a discussion on Sept. 8 organized by the Atlantic Council think tank to mark the two-year anniversary of the Abraham Accords, Al-Otaiba appealed for more to be done to advance a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.“All the stuff that we’re talking about is great, but we can’t avoid talking about the two-state solution. We really can’t,” he said at the virtual event, during which he described the Palestinians as “the elephant in the room.”Referring to the Abraham Accords, Al-Otaiba said: “I don’t think it was meant to solve — I think it was meant to buy space and time to create room for diplomacy to address the two-state solution. I still believe the two-state solution is the only game in town. I think we need to pursue it.”

The declaration “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” – co-authored by His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El Tayeb – is a model for interfaith harmony and human solidarity. Let us all take inspiration and renew our commitment to stand together as one human family.UN Secretary-General António Guterres-Human fraternity for peace and cooperation-We need — perhaps more than ever before — to recognize the valuable contribution of people of all religions, or beliefs, to humanity and the contribution that dialogue among all religious groups can make towards an improved awareness and understanding of the common values shared by all humankind. We also need to underline the importance of raising awareness about different cultures and religions, or beliefs, and the promotion of tolerance, which involves societal acceptance and respect for religious and cultural diversity, including with regard to religious expression. Education, in particular at school, should contribute in a meaningful way to promoting tolerance and the elimination of discrimination based on religion or belief.Furthermore, we must acknowledge that tolerance, pluralistic tradition, mutual respect and the diversity of religions and beliefs promote human fraternity. Thus, it is imperative that we encourage activities aimed at promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue in order to enhance peace and social stability, respect for diversity and mutual respect and to create, at the global level, and also at the regional, national and local levels, an environment conducive to peace and mutual understanding.Within that frame, the General-Assembly took note of all international, regional, national and local initiatives, as appropriate, as well as efforts by religious leaders, to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue, and in this regard took note also of the meeting between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayyib, on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in the signing of the document entitled “Human fraternity for world peace and living together”.Background-Following the devastation of the Second World War, the United Nations was established to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. One of its purposes is to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems, including by promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion. In 1999, The General-Assembly adopted, by resolution 53/243, the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, which serves as the universal mandate for the international community, particularly the United Nations system, to promote a culture of peace and non-violence that benefits all of humanity, including future generations. The declaration came about as a result of the long-held and cherished concept — contained within the Constitution of UNESCO — that "since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed." The Declaration embraces the principle that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process, in which dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are resolved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation. On 20 October 2010, the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/65/5 pointed out that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and established World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith. It further recognized the imperative need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people. At the core of all the faith systems and traditions is the recognition that we are all in this together and that we need to love and support one another to live in harmony and peace in an environmentally sustainable world. Our world continues to be beset by conflict and intolerance with rising number of refugees and the internally displaced in a hostile and unwelcoming world around them. We are also, unfortunately, witnessing messages of hate spreading discord among people. The need for spiritual guidance has never been greater. It is imperative that we double our efforts to spread the message of good neighborliness based on our common humanity, a message shared by all faith traditions. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 4 February as the International Day of Human Fraternity, with resolution 75/200.What is the Culture of Peace? A culture of peace is a set of values, attitudes, traditions and modes of behaviour and ways of life based on: Respect for life, ending of violence and promotion and practice of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; Full respect for the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of States and non-intervention in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any State, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law, Full respect for and promotion of all human rights and fundamental freedoms;Commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; Efforts to meet the developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations;Respect for and promotion of the right to development; Respect for and promotion of equal rights and opportunities for women and men; Respect for and promotion of the right of everyone to freedom of expression, opinion and information; Adherence to the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations; and fostered by an enabling national and international environment conducive to peace.Source: A/RES/53/243
The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact
Corporate sustainability starts with a company’s value system and a principles-based approach to doing business. This means operating in ways that, at a minimum, meet fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Responsible businesses enact the same values and principles wherever they have a presence, and know that good practices in one area do not offset harm in another. By incorporating the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into strategies, policies and procedures, and establishing a culture of integrity, companies are not only upholding their basic responsibilities to people and planet, but also setting the stage for long-term success.
The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact are derived from: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
Human Rights
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labour
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-Corruption
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Trudeau says new mystery ‘object’ over Canada shot down by US jet-Unidentified object is second to be spotted over North America since Chinese balloon traversed US airspace a week ago before being downed-By AFP-FEB 12,23-Today, 2:31 am
OTTAWA, Canada — A US fighter jet acting on the orders of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shot down an unidentified object over Canada on Saturday — the second such take-down in North American skies since the dramatic downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon a week ago.The operation marked the latest in a series of air incidents over North America, starting late last month when an alleged Chinese spy balloon crossed both Canada and the US mainland, intensifying a diplomatic rift with Beijing.“Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled, and a US F-22 successfully fired at the object,” Trudeau tweeted Saturday.Trudeau said that Canadian forces in the Yukon territory “will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object.”He said he had spoken with US President Joe Biden over the latest incursion, while Canada’s defense minister also said she spoke with the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The two “reaffirmed that we’ll always defend our sovereignty together,” Canadian defense minister Anita Anand tweeted. The object spotted on Saturday was shot down over the Yukon, which borders Alaska, where fighter jets downed another object Friday, off the US state’s north coast near the village of Deadhorse.Search and recovery operations for the remains of that object continued Saturday but were hindered by Arctic “wind chill, snow, and limited daylight,” the Pentagon’s Northern Command said in a statement.“Recovery activities are occurring on sea ice,” it said, adding that the Pentagon could offer “no further details… about the object, including its capabilities, purpose, or origin.Diplomatic riff-Last month, a giant balloon carrying electronics — which the Pentagon described as a spy vessel — flew over Canada and the United States, sparking a diplomatic flare-up with China, which acknowledged ownership of what it said was a harmless weather balloon blown off course. That balloon crossed into US airspace in Alaska on January 28, traversing Canada and much of the United States before it was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean off South Carolina on February 4.The balloon’s path took it over several US military installations, including ones with silos of nuclear-tipped missiles.Biden’s decision to allow the balloon to cross the mainland unimpeded before shooting it down over water was hammered by Republican lawmakers, some of whom said it should have been shot down upon entering US airspace.Federal recovery teams, comprising both divers and unmanned remote-control minisubs, continue to survey for debris of the balloon in shallow coastal waters, the Northern Command statement said.US officials say imagery of the balloon shows it had surveillance equipment that could intercept telecommunications as well as a solar array to power multiple sensors.
Iranian president to visit China in coming days — state media-In 3-day visit, Raisi expected to hold private talks with Chinese counterpart Xi, aiming to strengthen trade and sign ‘cooperation documents’ By AFP-FEB 12,23-Today, 10:56 am
TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will head to China within days for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, Iranian state media reported on Sunday.Raisi will set out for Beijing on Monday evening in response to an official invitation by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iran’s state news agency IRNA said. Both presidents met for the first time last September in Uzbekistan at a summit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, where the Iranian president called for expanded ties.On his upcoming trip, Raisi is expected to hold private talks with Xi, and delegations from both countries are due to sign “cooperation documents,” according to IRNA.The agency added that Raisi will also take part in meetings with Chinese businessmen and Iranians living in the country.Iran and China have strong economic ties, especially in the fields of energy, transit, agriculture, trade and investment. In 2021, both countries signed a 25-year “strategic cooperation pact” said to include “political, strategic and economic” components.China is Iran’s largest trade partner, IRNA said, citing the 10-month statistics of Iranian customs authorities.Iran’s exports to Beijing stood at $12.6 billion, while it imported $12.7 billion worth of goods from China.
Russia continues Ukraine strikes amid reported struggle to launch eastern offensive-Kyiv says Moscow wishes to try and turn the tide of the conflict as invasion approaches the one-year mark, but is having trouble gaining foothol-By susie blann-FEB 12,23-Today, 2:52 pm
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces over the weekend continued to shell Ukrainian cities amid a grinding push to seize more land in the east of the country, with Ukrainian officials saying that Moscow is having trouble launching its much-anticipated large-scale offensive there. One person was killed and one more was wounded on Sunday morning by the shelling of Nikopol, a city in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Gov. Serhii Lysak reported. The shelling damaged four residential buildings, a vocational school and a water treatment facility. In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, one person was wounded after three Russian S-300 missiles hit infrastructure facilities overnight, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said.Ukrainian forces also downed five drones — four Shahed killer drones and one Orlan-10 reconnaissance drone — over the partially occupied Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions on Saturday evening, Kyiv’s military reported. The attacks come as Russian forces push to take over more land in the eastern industrial heartland of Donbas, comprising the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Ukrainian and Western officials have warned that Russia could launch a new, broad offensive there to try to turn the tide of the conflict as the war approaches the one-year mark. But Ukrainian officials say that Moscow is having trouble mounting such an offensive.“They are having big problems with a big offensive,” Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, told Ukrainian television on Saturday night.“They have begun their offensive, they’re just not saying they have, and our troops are repelling it very powerfully. The offensive that they planned is already gradually underway. But (it is) not the offensive they were counting on,” Danilov said.A US-based think tank noted that it is also Russia’s pro-Kremlin military bloggers who question Moscow’s ability to launch a broad offensive in Ukraine. They “continue to appear demoralized at the Kremlin’s prospects for executing a major offensive,” the Institute for the Study of War said in its latest report.Earlier this week the owner of the Russian Wagner Group private military contractor actively involved in the fighting in Ukraine said that the war could drag on for years.Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video interview released late Friday that it could take 18 months to two years for Russia to fully secure control of Donbas. He added that the war could go on for three years if Moscow decides to capture broader territories east of the Dnieper River. The statement from Prigozhin, a millionaire who has close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and was dubbed “Putin’s chef” for his lucrative Kremlin catering contracts, marked a recognition of the difficulties that the Kremlin has faced in the campaign, which it initially expected to wrap up within weeks when Russian troops invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.Russia suffered a series of humiliating setbacks in the fall when the Ukrainian military launched successful counteroffensives to reclaim broad swaths of territory in the east and the south. On Sunday, Prigozhin said that Wagner fighters have taken over the Krasna Hora settlement north of Bakhmut, a strategic city at the epicenter of the fighting in recent months.

Final death toll from Turkey-Syria quake will top 55,000, UN relief chief predicts-Visiting devastated city of Kahramanmaras, Martin Griffiths estimates that current toll of some 28,000 will ‘double or more’-By AFP Today, 5:45 am
KAHRAMANMARAS, Turkey — The death toll from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria will “double or more” from its current level of around 28,000, UN relief chief Martin Griffiths has said.Griffiths arrived on Saturday in Turkey’s southern city of Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of the first 7.8-magnitude tremor that upturned millions of lives in the pre-dawn hours of Monday. He said of the death toll in an interview with Sky News on Saturday: “I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble but I’m sure it will double or more.”“We haven’t really begun to count the number of dead,” he said.Officials and medics said 24,617 people were killed in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria. The confirmed total now stands at 28,191.Tens of thousands of rescue workers are scouring flattened neighborhoods despite freezing weather that has deepened the misery of millions now in desperate need of aid.The United Nations has warned that at least 870,000 people urgently need hot meals across Turkey and Syria. Up to 5.3 million people may have been made homeless in Syria alone.Almost 26 million people have been affected by the earthquake, the World Health Organization (WHO) said as it launched a flash appeal on Saturday for $42.8 million to cope with immediate health needs.Turkey’s disaster agency said more than 32,000 people from Turkish organizations are working on search-and-rescue efforts. There are also 8,294 international rescuers, including from Israel. What I saw today in #Türkiye was devastating. What were once homes, filled with families and memories, now lay contorted and tangled. Our thoughts are with those affected and we will continue to support in any way we can. pic.twitter.com/bhMDR1oEGN— Martin Griffiths (@UNReliefChief) February 11, 2023-“Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” Griffiths said in a video posted to Twitter.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Turkey arrests building contractors 6 days after deadly earthquakes-By AP-FEB 12,23
ANTAKYA, Turkey — As rescuers still pull a lucky few from the rubble six days after a pair of earthquakes devastated southeast Turkey and northern Syria, Turkish officials detain or issue arrest warrants for some 130 people allegedly involved in the construction of buildings that toppled down and crushed their occupants. The death toll from Monday’s quakes stood at 28,191 — with another 80,000-plus injured — as of this morning and was certain to rise as bodies kept emerging. As despair also bred rage at the agonizingly slow rescue efforts, the focus has turned to who was to blame for not better preparing people in the earthquake-prone region that includes an area of Syria that was already suffering from years of civil war.Even though Turkey has, on paper, construction codes that meet current earthquake-engineering standards, they are too rarely enforced, explaining why thousands of buildings slumped onto their side or pancaked downward onto residents.Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay says that warrants have been issued for the detention of 131 people suspected to being responsible for collapsed buildings.Turkey’s justice minister has vowed to punish anyone responsible, and prosecutors have begun gathering samples of buildings for evidence on materials used in constructions. The quakes were powerful, but victims, experts and people across Turkey are blaming bad construction for multiplying the devastation.
Local says rescuers came after 4 days: 'What good is that?' As death toll tops 33,000, sorrow turns to tension over Turkey’s earthquake response-In some areas, locals claim it took days for help to arrive, accuse government of political, ethnic discrimination; others angry at burden of Syrian war refugees By Justin Spike-feb 12,23-Today, 5:03 pm
ANTAKYA, Turkey (AP) — Six days after a massive earthquake devastated Syria and Turkey, and as the confirmed death toll has risen above 33,000, sorrow and disbelief are turning to anger and tension over a sense that there has been an ineffective, unfair and disproportionate response to the historic disaster. Many in Turkey express frustration that rescue operations have proceeded painfully slowly, and that valuable time has been lost during the narrow window for finding people alive beneath the rubble.Others, particularly in the southern Hatay province near the Syrian border, say that Turkey’s government was late in delivering assistance to the hardest-hit region for what they suspect are both political and religious reasons. In Adiyaman, southeastern Turkey, Elif Busra Ozturk waited outside the wreckage of a building on Saturday where her uncle and aunt were trapped — believed dead — and where the bodies of two of her cousins had already been found.“For three days, I waited outside for help. No one came. There were so few rescue teams that they could only intervene in places they were sure there were people alive,” she said.At the same building complex, Abdullah Tas, 66, said he had been sleeping inside a car near the building where his son, daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren were buried. He said that rescuers had first arrived four days after the earthquake struck. The Associated Press could not independently verify his claim.“What good is that for the people under the debris?” he asked. The sentiment that not enough is being done to free people’s buried family members has taken hold in other parts of the earthquake zone as well. In the ancient city of Antakya, a crush of onlookers stood behind police tape on Saturday to watch as bulldozers clawed at a high-rise luxury apartment building that had toppled onto its side.Over 1,000 residents had been in the 12-story building when the quake struck, according to family members who were watching the recovery effort. Hundreds were still inside, they said, but complained that the effort to free them had been slow and unserious.“This is an atrocity, I don’t know what to say,” said Bediha Kanmaz, 60, whose son and 7-month-old grandson had already been pulled dead out of the building — locked in an embrace — and whose daughter-in-law was still inside.“We open body bags to see if they’re ours, we’re checking if they’re our children. We’re even checking the ones that are torn to pieces,” she said of herself and other grief-stricken family members.Kanmaz blamed Turkey’s government for the slow response and accused the national rescue service of failing to do enough to recover people alive. She and others in Antakya expressed the belief that the presence of a large minority of Alevi — an Anatolian Islamic tradition that differs from Sunni and Shia Islam and Alawites in Syria — had made them a low priority for the government because traditionally, few Alevis vote for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party. There was no evidence, however, that the region was overlooked for sectarian reasons.Erdogan said on Wednesday post-quake efforts were ongoing across the 10 provinces hit by the quake and called allegations of no help from state institutions like the military “lies, fake slander.” He has acknowledged shortcomings. Officials said rescue efforts in Hatay were initially complicated by the destruction of the local airport’s runway and bad road conditions.Anger over the extent of the destruction, however, is not limited to individuals. Turkish authorities have been detaining or issuing detention warrants for dozens of people who were allegedly involved in the construction of buildings that collapsed, and the justice minister has vowed to punish anyone responsible.Kanmaz blamed negligence on the part of the developer of the apartment building where her family had been killed.“If I could wrap my hands around the contractor’s neck, I would tear him to shreds,” she said. That contractor, who oversaw the construction of the 250-unit building, was detained at Istanbul Airport Friday before boarding a flight out of the country, Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency reported. On Saturday, he was formally arrested. His lawyer suggested the public was looking for a scapegoat. In multiethnic southern Turkey, other tensions are arising. Some expressed frustration that Syrian refugees who have lived in the region after fleeing a devastating civil war in their own country are burdening the sparse welfare system and competing for resources with Turkish people.“There are many poor people in Hatay but they don’t offer us any welfare, they give it to the Syrians. They give so much to the Syrians,” Kanmaz said. “There are more Syrians than Turks here.”There were signs on Saturday that the tensions could be boiling over. Two German aid groups and the Austrian Armed Forces temporarily interrupted their rescue work in the Hatay region citing the tense situation and fear for the safety of their staff. They resumed work after the Turkish army secured the area, the Austrian defense ministry spokesman tweeted.“There is increasing tension between different groups in Turkey,” Lt. Col. Pierre Kugelweis of the Austrian Armed Forces told the APA news agency. “Shots have reportedly been fired.”German news agency dpa reported that chief of operations of the aid group I.S.A.R Germany, Steven Berger, said that “it can be seen that grief is slowly giving way to anger” in Turkey’s quake-struck regions. For Kanmaz, it is both grief and anger.“I’m angry. Life is over,” she said. “We live for our children; what matters most to us is our children. We exist if they exist. Now we are over. Everything you see here is over.”
