WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is reportedly frustrated with the American Jewish community for not embracing the US president more warmly after he moved the US embassy to Jerusalem.A new report released Sunday by the Jewish People Policy Institute, a branch of the Jewish Agency, quoted a White House official who alleged the president’s predecessor, Barack Obama, would be beloved for doing the things Trump has done.“We can take justified criticism, but if Obama had transferred the US embassy to Jerusalem, the American Jewish community would have been united in applauding him!” the official said.Trump remains deeply unpopular with US Jews. An American Jewish Committee poll from one year ago found that 77 percent US Jews had an unfavorable view of the president.The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington’s executive director, Ron Halber, said the Trump administration’s broader, deeply controversial policies made it uncomfortable for Jewish Americans to praise the president for anything.“Even if a silent majority of American Jews support the embassy move, they find it hard to publicly give Trump credit when they, like other Americans, have such intense negative feelings toward the man and his policies,” Halber told The Times of Israel on Sunday morning.“It’s frankly because of a simple fact,” he went on. “More Jews in this country are Democrats and many, many Jews in this country are very upset with the Trump administration for reasons that have nothing to do with Israel and are therefore emotionally reluctant to applaud him when he does something that many American Jews wanted.”The JPPI’s 2018 assessment also found that Israel was becoming increasingly politicized in the United States.Two former US officials, Ambassador Dennis Ross and Ambassador Stuart Eisenstat, who are JPPI co-chairs, said, “While Israel still enjoys bipartisan support in the US Congress, for the first time in its history it has become a divisive political issue.”Most Israel analysts often cite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision in 2015 to speak before a joint session of Congress lambasting Obama’s Iran deal negotiations as a turning point in US-Israel relations, with the Israeli premier firmly aligning himself with the Republican Party.Under the Trump administration, however, that divide seems to have exacerbated, according to JPPI.Beyond Trump’s relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem, Democrats were firmly against the US president’s decision to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal, a step Republicans had applauded. Fearing more air attacks, Abdulmonem is expanding the makeshift bomb shelter in case they need to take refuge there again.Residents of Idlib province and surrounding areas have been bracing themselves for a Russian-backed government offensive on the country’s largest remaining rebel-held zone.Some 3 million people live in the area and the United Nations has warned that a full-scale regime assault could spark the century’s worst humanitarian catastrophe.Residents’ fears have been heightened by Russian and Syrian air strikes, artillery fire and barrel bombs that have killed more than 30 civilians across the province in the past month, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Sitting outside the craggy cave opening in his hometown of Kafr Ain, in Idlib’s south, Abdulmonem Sheikh Jassem explains how he is trying to keep his family safe.“About 10 days ago, we started digging out, expanding, and equipping the cave in case there’s new bombing,” says Jassem, a 55-year-old former truck driver.Citing a bad back and knee problems, he has hired a labourer to transform the grotto into a full shelter.Working by the dim light filtering in through the mouth of the cave, the elderly worker chips away at the rock face with a pickaxe to widen the cramped space.The builder’s two scrawny children, covered in a thick layer of dust, move rocks torn loose from the wall to a wheelbarrow outside, which they periodically dump in the nearby hills.“We’re expanding it out, then we’ll paint it and put stairs at the entrance so you can go up and down easily,” says Jassem, who has four daughters and two sons of his own.-‘Scared for my children’-Two years ago, Jassem and his family rushed to the very same cave to hide from an incoming regime helicopter.“Our house was demolished but we were in the cave, thank God, so no one was wounded or hurt,” he says, his coarse salt-and-pepper hair tapering down into stubble on his tanned, wrinkled face.“I’m the most scared for my children,” he says. “Fear is normal for those who have a family.”Syria’s conflict erupted in 2011. Israeli forces on Monday reportedly raided the family home of a Palestinian teen who stabbed an Israeli man to death in a West Bank terror attack a day earlier.According to reports in Palestinian media, troops descended on the home of Khalil Jabarin in the city of Yatta, near Hebron, in a pre-dawn raid Monday.On Sunday morning Jabarin, 17, stabbed to death Israeli Ari Fuld, 45, in a terror attack at a shopping center frequented by Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank south of Jerusalem.Fuld, a dual Israeli and US citizen and father of four, lived in the nearby settlement of Efrat and was well known in media and Israel advocacy circles for his online activism. His death was roundly condemned across the Israeli political spectrum and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly also spoke out against violence in reaction to the terror attack.According to a report in a Hamas-linked news outlet, troops in Yatta measured the Jabarin house as a preliminary step before its possible demolition. Israel has in the past razed homes of Palestinian terrorists. Though controversial, Jerusalem defends the measure as an important deterrent to stop terror attack.It was not immediately clear if there were any arrests.The IDF did not comment on the reports. The military generally only releases information about overnight raids the next morning.Troops had earlier set up a perimeter around Yatta, according to Israeli reports.The IDF said earlier that Israeli security forces planned to arrest members of the terrorist’s family in order to further investigate what information they had about his plans before he carried out the attack.Some 65,000 Palestinians live in Yatta, and a number of terror attacks in recent years have been carried out by residents of the city.According to Israeli authorities, shortly before noon on Sunday, Jabarin stabbed Fuld in the back, as they stood on the sidewalk outside the shopping mall at the Etzion junction.Despite his wounds, Fuld chased and shot his attacker before collapsing to the ground. He was declared dead after being rushed to a Jerusalem hospital.Jabarin was shot by Fuld and another armed civilian at the scene. He was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in moderate condition with multiple gunshot wounds, hospital officials said.No terror group claimed the attack, but Hamas praised it. In contrast, Abbas told a group of visiting Israeli ex-politicians that he was against violence in reaction to the stabbing, according to former justice minister Yossi Beilin, who attended the meeting.A senior Palestinian Authority official based in the southern West Bank said Jabarin’s father had warned PA security forces that his son had gone missing Sunday morning, after he fought with him about going to school.“The father and his son got into a fight this morning. The father wanted his son to go to school, but he refused and eventually the father beat him,” the official, who asked not to be named, told The Times of Israel. “The son then ran away and the father told the security forces that his son went missing. CAIRO — Egypt said archaeologists have discovered a statue of a lion’s body and a human head in the southern city of Aswan.The Antiquities Ministry said Sunday the sphinx made of sandstone was found in the Temple of Kom Ombo during work to protect the site from groundwater.Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the statue probably dates back to Ptolemaic times.The Ptolemaic Dynasty ruled Egypt for some 300 years — from around 320 BCE to about 30 BCE.Egypt hopes such discoveries will spur tourism, partially driven by antiquities sightseeing, which was hit hard by political turmoil following the 2011 uprising.

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese submarine joined a naval drill in the South China Sea for the first time, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday, in an escalation of Japanese activity in the disputed waterway claimed by China and others.The Maritime Self Defense Force submarine Kuroshio conducted a naval exercise on Thursday with other Japanese warships in the South China Sea, including the Kaga helicopter carrier, which is on a two-month tour of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.She said it was the first time a Japanese submarine had conducted drills there, confirming an earlier report in the Asahi newspaper.The exercise, which involved the submarine trying to evade detection, was conducted away from island bases constructed by China to push its claims in the strategic sea. However, it could still anger Beijing because submarines represent a greater potential menace to shipping than surface vessels.It came after a British Royal Navy amphibious assault ship, HMS Albion, sailed close to islands claimed by China in the South China Sea late last month to exercise "freedom of navigation" rights.Britain's first such operation prompted a strong protest from China, which sent aircraft and a naval vessel to meet the British ship.The U.S. Navy has conducted similar operations in the South China Sea. Washington has said it would like to see more countries challenge Beijing in the South China Sea, through which some $3 trillion of shipborne trade passes each year.Foreign aircraft and vessels in the region are routinely challenged by Chinese naval ships and monitoring stations on the fortified islands, sources have said previously. Roy Cooper declared, as the storm’s death toll climbed to 15.As the storm continued to crawl inland, dumping more than 30 inches of rain in spots since Friday, fears of historic flooding grew and tens of thousands were ordered evacuated from communities along the state’s steadily rising rivers — with the Cape Fear, Little River, Lumber, Waccamaw and Pee Dee rivers all projected to burst their banks.In Wilmington, with roads leading in and out of the coastal city underwater and streams still headed upward, residents waited for hours outside stores and restaurants for basic necessities like water. (Reuters) - Deadly storm Florence drenched North Carolina with more downpours on Sunday, cutting off the coastal city of Wilmington, damaging tens of thousands of homes and threatening worse flooding as rivers fill to the bursting point.The death toll rose to at least 17.Florence, a onetime hurricane that weakened to a tropical depression by Sunday, dumped up to 40 inches (100 cm) of rain on parts of North Carolina since Thursday, and continued to produce widespread heavy rain over much of North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, the National Weather Service said."The storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference. It then skirted south of Hong Kong and the neighboring gambling hub of Macau, before making landfall in China.Parts of Hong Kong and Macau were severely flooded, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities. The United States on Sunday confirmed it has cut additional aid to the Palestinians for programs supporting conflict resolution with Israelis, adding to more than $500 million in other cuts.The latest cuts come from $10 million in programs on reconciliation involving Palestinians as well as Jewish and Arab Israelis.The portion of the money involving Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip was being redirected to programs between Jewish and Arab Israelis, a US Embassy official said.It was not clear how much of the $10 million was being redirected.US officials also could not confirm whether the latest cut meant all non-security related aid to the Palestinians had now been eliminated.“As announced in August, the administration redirected more than $200 million that was originally planned for programs in the West Bank and Gaza,” a US Embassy official said.“At the same time, we redirected a portion of the $10 million which was planned for conflict management and mitigation.”The official said the portion involving Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza would be used “to enhance” programs in Israel instead.US President Donald Trump has said he will withhold aid from the Palestinians to force them to negotiate as the White House prepares a plan for Middle East peace — what he has called the “ultimate deal.”The Palestinian leadership cut off contact with the White House after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December.They accuse Trump of blatant bias in favor of Israel and say he is blackmailing them to force them to accept the White House’s terms.In recent weeks, the US government has announced more than $500 million in cuts in Palestinian aid, including canceling support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.It has maintained security-related aid, having provided $61 million in assistance this year.

An American-French law professor arrested by Israel while protesting against the demolition of a Palestinian village in the West Bank is to be deported, his lawyer said Sunday.US-born Frank Romano, who teaches law at the Paris Nanterre University, was detained on Friday while taking part in a demonstration at the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem.“There is an administrative decision to deport him,” lawyer Gaby Lansky told reporters.“Like thieves in the night, instead of bringing Frank Romano to a hearing to free him from jail, which I requested and which was set for 4 p.m. in Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, without notifying me or the court, at 2 p.m., police transferred him to immigration for deportation,” Lansky wrote on Twitter.A spokeswoman for the Israeli Interior Ministry could not immediately confirm such a decision.The village of roughly 200 people in the West Bank will be demolished, after an Israeli court paved the way for its razing.Anti-demolition activists said Romano was arrested along with two Palestinian protesters when they tried to block bulldozers sent in by Israeli authorities to seal off an access road to the village. The activists said that Romano stood in front of a bulldozer that was clearing barriers that had been set up to slow demolition.Israeli police confirmed three people were detained for causing disturbances at Khan al-Ahmar on Friday, but did not release details of their identities.Pictures on social media show him being led from the scene by Israeli riot police.Last week, the High Court of Justice cleared the way for the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar, rejecting a final appeal amid a growing international outcry over the fate of the West Bank community.Israel says Khan al-Ahmar, a hamlet of corrugated shacks east of Jerusalem, was illegally built and has offered to resettle residents 12 kilometers (7 miles) away.Opponents of the demolition argue that it is part of an effort to enable the expansion of the nearby settlement of Kfar Adumim and to create a region of contiguous Israeli control from Jerusalem almost to the Dead Sea, a move critics say will bisect the West Bank, making a contiguous Palestinian state impossible.Israeli forces on Thursday demolished five trailers that were set up recently outside the hamlet. (Reuters) - Residents of three Massachusetts communities were allowed to return to their homes on Sunday for the first time since a series of gas explosions killed one man and set dozens of buildings on fire.Natural gas leaks, believed to have been caused by over-pressurized lines, on Thursday triggered a series of explosions and fires in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence, communities northwest of Boston. Local officials ordered residents of some 8,000 homes and businesses to evacuate and shut off electricity to prevent further fires.It was the largest natural gas pipeline accident, in terms of the number of buildings involved, in the United States since 2010, when an interstate line operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Co ruptured in San Bruno, California, destroying 38 buildings, damaging 70 more, and killing eight people.Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, which provides service in the affected communities, declined to comment on Sunday on what caused the leaks, saying federal investigators would decide. The company had said before the releases that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, including the affected suburbs.Columbia Gas' parent, NiSource Inc , has set up a phone center and an office in Lawrence to accept residents' claims for property damage and costs related to the fires and evacuation, NiSource spokesman Ken Stammen said in an email.The National Transportation Safety Board, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Massachusetts Fire Marshal's office, and Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the gas leaks and explosions."There is no sign that anyone did anything intentional," Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the state Fire Marshal said on Friday. She said the FBI would stay involved until the NTSB, which is leading the probe, determined what caused the leaks.Utility crews worked through the weekend to complete checks and shut gas meters on homes and buildings in the affected areas, Eversource Energy , the utility overseeing the review, said on Sunday.
