Trump officials reportedly angry at US Jews for not cheering embassy move-Senior administration official complains, ‘If Obama had transferred the US embassy to Jerusalem, the American Jewish community would have been united in applauding him!’-By Eric Cortellessa-TOI-18 September 2018
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is reportedly frustrated with the American Jewish community for not embracing the US president more warmly after he moved the US embassy to Jerusalem.A new report released Sunday by the Jewish People Policy Institute, a branch of the Jewish Agency, quoted a White House official who alleged the president’s predecessor, Barack Obama, would be beloved for doing the things Trump has done.“We can take justified criticism, but if Obama had transferred the US embassy to Jerusalem, the American Jewish community would have been united in applauding him!” the official said.Trump remains deeply unpopular with US Jews. An American Jewish Committee poll from one year ago found that 77 percent US Jews had an unfavorable view of the president. The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington’s executive director, Ron Halber, said the Trump administration’s broader, deeply controversial policies made it uncomfortable for Jewish Americans to praise the president for anything.“Even if a silent majority of American Jews support the embassy move, they find it hard to publicly give Trump credit when they, like other Americans, have such intense negative feelings toward the man and his policies,” Halber told The Times of Israel on Sunday morning.“It’s frankly because of a simple fact,” he went on. “More Jews in this country are Democrats and many, many Jews in this country are very upset with the Trump administration for reasons that have nothing to do with Israel and are therefore emotionally reluctant to applaud him when he does something that many American Jews wanted.”The JPPI’s 2018 assessment also found that Israel was becoming increasingly politicized in the United States. Two former US officials, Ambassador Dennis Ross and Ambassador Stuart Eisenstat, who are JPPI co-chairs, said, “While Israel still enjoys bipartisan support in the US Congress, for the first time in its history it has become a divisive political issue.”Most Israel analysts often cite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision in 2015 to speak before a joint session of Congress lambasting Obama’s Iran deal negotiations as a turning point in US-Israel relations, with the Israeli premier firmly aligning himself with the Republican Party.Under the Trump administration, however, that divide seems to have exacerbated, according to JPPI.Beyond Trump’s relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem, Democrats were firmly against the US president’s decision to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal, a step Republicans had applauded. Netanyahu has been a fierce critic of the deal and enthusiastically welcomed the move. Both of these decisions were intensely criticized by left-wing Jewish groups, including the Middle East policy advocacy organizations J Street and the New Israel Fund. The annual JPPI analysis looks at the “triangular relationship” of the administration in Washington, the government in Jerusalem, and the American Jewish community. This year’s report found that cooperation between the US and Israeli government has been strengthened under the Trump White House, but that the relationship between Israel and the American Jewish community has weakened — “given the deep support of Jews for the Democratic Party.”Another reason for the deteriorating relationship was Jerusalem’s right-wing government and policies that are anathema to US Jews, including the recent nation-state law that enshrines Israel’s status as a Jewish state in its quasi-constitutional Basic Laws.“The American Jewish community is one of Israel’s most significant strategic assets in the long run,” said JPPI President Avinoam Bar-Yosef.“A danger has emerged recently brought by conflicting values between Jews with a liberal worldview — most of whom are Conservative, Reform or secular — and Israel, which is increasingly perceived in the Diaspora as advancing conservative trends, due in part to the lack of an equality clause in the recent nation-state legislation and restrictive measures regarding conversion.”Since January 2017, the Trump administration has made attempts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal central to its foreign policy.Trump’s decision last year to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US embassy there disrupted that process, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas refusing to meet with White House officials afterwords, accusing them of forfeiting their right to act as honest mediators.Since then, US-Palestinian relations have been at their worst in decades. The Trump administration, over the last several weeks, cut off funding aid to the Palestinian Authority, the UN Reliefs and Works Agency, the East Jerusalem hospital network and Israeli-Palestinian co-existence programs. The White House claims those moves are to pressure Abbas and the Palestinians to reengage in peace efforts.JPPI said in its assessment that Trump administration’s “sympathetic attitude” toward Israel and “close ties” to the Netanyahu coalition has created a “strategic window of opportunity” to advance a political initiative that would prevent Israel from “slipping into the a bi-national state reality.”Responding to the JPPI report, White House peace negotiator Jason Greenblatt said the administration’s postures on the Middle East were aligned with US interests.“The president sets American policy on the basis of what is best for America, not what is best for any particular ethnic group or religion,” he told The Times of Israel on Sunday.“The president’s pro-Israel policies have had widespread support among US citizens, including many in the Jewish community. The president appreciates that support in addition to the support he receives with regard to many other foreign and domestic initiatives,” Greenblatt added.Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Coalition did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the JPPI report.
Fearing air assault, some in Idlib carve out shelter underground-Chipping away at rock to create subterranean havens, Syrians look to caves as last resort with major Russian-backed regime offensive closing in-By Omar Haj Kadour-TOI-SEP 18,18
KAFR AIN, Syria (AFP) — The grotto in northwestern Syria has already saved his children’s lives once. Fearing more air attacks, Abdulmonem is expanding the makeshift bomb shelter in case they need to take refuge there again.Residents of Idlib province and surrounding areas have been bracing themselves for a Russian-backed government offensive on the country’s largest remaining rebel-held zone. Some 3 million people live in the area and the United Nations has warned that a full-scale regime assault could spark the century’s worst humanitarian catastrophe.Residents’ fears have been heightened by Russian and Syrian air strikes, artillery fire and barrel bombs that have killed more than 30 civilians across the province in the past month, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Sitting outside the craggy cave opening in his hometown of Kafr Ain, in Idlib’s south, Abdulmonem Sheikh Jassem explains how he is trying to keep his family safe.“About 10 days ago, we started digging out, expanding, and equipping the cave in case there’s new bombing,” says Jassem, a 55-year-old former truck driver.Citing a bad back and knee problems, he has hired a labourer to transform the grotto into a full shelter.Working by the dim light filtering in through the mouth of the cave, the elderly worker chips away at the rock face with a pickaxe to widen the cramped space. The builder’s two scrawny children, covered in a thick layer of dust, move rocks torn loose from the wall to a wheelbarrow outside, which they periodically dump in the nearby hills.“We’re expanding it out, then we’ll paint it and put stairs at the entrance so you can go up and down easily,” says Jassem, who has four daughters and two sons of his own.-‘Scared for my children’-Two years ago, Jassem and his family rushed to the very same cave to hide from an incoming regime helicopter.“Our house was demolished but we were in the cave, thank God, so no one was wounded or hurt,” he says, his coarse salt-and-pepper hair tapering down into stubble on his tanned, wrinkled face.“I’m the most scared for my children,” he says. “Fear is normal for those who have a family.”Syria’s conflict erupted in 2011. Within four years, rebels and hardline jihadists had overrun swathes of territory, including Idlib province. But since then, government troops have made a fierce comeback and recaptured nearly two-thirds of the country, bolstered by Syrian and Russian warplanes. The regime’s use of air raids across Syria has sent residents fleeing to basements or caves, even forcing hospitals, community centres and schools to move underground.Medics in rural parts of Idlib have done the same.On September 8, an underground hospital on the outskirts of Hass in the south of the province was damaged by an air strike, according to the Observatory.A recent wave of strikes near the town of Hobeit further south sent Abu Mohammad, his uncle and his young cousins into their homemade bomb shelter, he tells AFP.The family dug out the large cellar during the early years of Syria’s war. The floors and walls have been smoothed over with concrete and painted, and several fluorescent bulbs cast a blue-white light into the room.A shelf carved into one wall holds water and jars of pickles and other preserves.-Stocking up-“The bombing got worse on this area because it’s close to regime territory in northern Hama province,” just south of Idlib, says Abu Mohammad, 25.“We had to clean the shelter out again, bring preserves and everything we might need so that we won’t have to go back up to the house.”The UN has urged the conflict’s top powerbrokers — Russia, fellow regime ally Iran, and rebel backer Turkey — to engage in talks to avoid a “bloodbath” in Idlib.Bombardment has slowed over the past week, and on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied that Syrian troops were planning a major offensive on Idlib. For eight-year-old Omran, a cousin of Abu Mohammad, the most important thing is being able to go to school safely. The threat of air attacks has prevented the dark-eyed boy going to class for more than a week.“I have lots of friends who have been wounded and some of them died,” says Omran.“I want to read, write, and go to school every day.”
Troops said to raid home of terrorist behind deadly stabbing-Palestinian report comes after soldiers set up perimeter around southern West Bank city of Yatta, home of Khalil Jabarin, who killed Israeli Ari Fuld in Sunday attack-By TOI staff-SEP 18,18
Israeli forces on Monday reportedly raided the family home of a Palestinian teen who stabbed an Israeli man to death in a West Bank terror attack a day earlier.According to reports in Palestinian media, troops descended on the home of Khalil Jabarin in the city of Yatta, near Hebron, in a pre-dawn raid Monday. On Sunday morning Jabarin, 17, stabbed to death Israeli Ari Fuld, 45, in a terror attack at a shopping center frequented by Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank south of Jerusalem.Fuld, a dual Israeli and US citizen and father of four, lived in the nearby settlement of Efrat and was well known in media and Israel advocacy circles for his online activism. His death was roundly condemned across the Israeli political spectrum and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas reportedly also spoke out against violence in reaction to the terror attack.According to a report in a Hamas-linked news outlet, troops in Yatta measured the Jabarin house as a preliminary step before its possible demolition. Israel has in the past razed homes of Palestinian terrorists. Though controversial, Jerusalem defends the measure as an important deterrent to stop terror attack. It was not immediately clear if there were any arrests. The IDF did not comment on the reports. The military generally only releases information about overnight raids the next morning.Troops had earlier set up a perimeter around Yatta, according to Israeli reports. The IDF said earlier that Israeli security forces planned to arrest members of the terrorist’s family in order to further investigate what information they had about his plans before he carried out the attack. Some 65,000 Palestinians live in Yatta, and a number of terror attacks in recent years have been carried out by residents of the city.According to Israeli authorities, shortly before noon on Sunday, Jabarin stabbed Fuld in the back, as they stood on the sidewalk outside the shopping mall at the Etzion junction.Despite his wounds, Fuld chased and shot his attacker before collapsing to the ground. He was declared dead after being rushed to a Jerusalem hospital.Jabarin was shot by Fuld and another armed civilian at the scene. He was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in moderate condition with multiple gunshot wounds, hospital officials said.No terror group claimed the attack, but Hamas praised it. In contrast, Abbas told a group of visiting Israeli ex-politicians that he was against violence in reaction to the stabbing, according to former justice minister Yossi Beilin, who attended the meeting.A senior Palestinian Authority official based in the southern West Bank said Jabarin’s father had warned PA security forces that his son had gone missing Sunday morning, after he fought with him about going to school.“The father and his son got into a fight this morning. The father wanted his son to go to school, but he refused and eventually the father beat him,” the official, who asked not to be named, told The Times of Israel. “The son then ran away and the father told the security forces that his son went missing. The security forces tried to find him, but they weren’t able to before [the stabbing].”When asked if the PA security forces informed their Israeli counterparts that Jabarin had gone missing, the official said that the father had only informed them that his son had disappeared and not that he was planning to carry out an attack.“All we knew was that the boy had run away. So we did not inform the Israeli side,” the Palestinian official said. “We did not know he was planning to carry out a stabbing.”Jabarin’s mother, however, went to the nearby Meitar checkpoint in the southern West Bank and told soldiers, at approximately the same time the stabbing took place, that her son planned to commit an attack, according to the Israeli army. She did not provide specific details about where or when she believed Jabarin would carry out an attack, the army said.Adam Rasgon contributed to this report.
Archaeologists discover ancient sphinx in Egypt-Sandstone figurine found in Temple of Kom Ombo during work to protect the site from groundwater; said to date to Ptolemaic times-By AP-TOI-18 September 2018
CAIRO — Egypt said archaeologists have discovered a statue of a lion’s body and a human head in the southern city of Aswan. The Antiquities Ministry said Sunday the sphinx made of sandstone was found in the Temple of Kom Ombo during work to protect the site from groundwater.Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the statue probably dates back to Ptolemaic times. The Ptolemaic Dynasty ruled Egypt for some 300 years — from around 320 BCE to about 30 BCE.Egypt hopes such discoveries will spur tourism, partially driven by antiquities sightseeing, which was hit hard by political turmoil following the 2011 uprising.

Japanese submarine conducts first drills in South China Sea-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese submarine joined a naval drill in the South China Sea for the first time, the Ministry of Defence said on Monday, in an escalation of Japanese activity in the disputed waterway claimed by China and others. The Maritime Self Defense Force submarine Kuroshio conducted a naval exercise on Thursday with other Japanese warships in the South China Sea, including the Kaga helicopter carrier, which is on a two-month tour of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said. She said it was the first time a Japanese submarine had conducted drills there, confirming an earlier report in the Asahi newspaper. The exercise, which involved the submarine trying to evade detection, was conducted away from island bases constructed by China to push its claims in the strategic sea. However, it could still anger Beijing because submarines represent a greater potential menace to shipping than surface vessels. It came after a British Royal Navy amphibious assault ship, HMS Albion, sailed close to islands claimed by China in the South China Sea late last month to exercise "freedom of navigation" rights.Britain's first such operation prompted a strong protest from China, which sent aircraft and a naval vessel to meet the British ship. The U.S. Navy has conducted similar operations in the South China Sea. Washington has said it would like to see more countries challenge Beijing in the South China Sea, through which some $3 trillion of shipborne trade passes each year.Foreign aircraft and vessels in the region are routinely challenged by Chinese naval ships and monitoring stations on the fortified islands, sources have said previously. Beijing insists its intentions in the South China Sea are peaceful.Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have territorial claims in the area.In a separate announcement, the defense ministry said the Kuroshio, with a crew of 80, would make a five-day port visit to Vietnam's strategic naval base at Cam Ranh Bay from Monday.(Reporting by Tim Kelly; Editing by Paul Tait)
Angry’ Abbas condemns violence after deadly terror attack-Abbas tells former Israeli lawmakers that “everyone loses from violence,” hours after Israeli man killed in West Bank stabbing-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-SEPT 18,18
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he opposes violence Sunday, reacting to a terror attack in which a Palestinian teen stabbed an Israeli man to death.Abbas made the remarks during a meeting with former Israeli politicians, including Ophir Pinez-Paz, Efi Oshaya, Yair Tzaban, Yosef Vanunu and others at the PA presidential headquarters in Ramallah on Sunday evening, according to former justice minister Yossi Beilin, who was also at the meeting.Ari Fuld, 45, was killed in the terror attack outside the Harim Mall at the Etzion junction in the West Bank south of Jerusalem. Fuld, an American-Israeli resident of the Efrat settlement and a father of four, managed to chase down and shoot his assailant before collapsing.Beilin said Abbas appeared “visibly angry about the attack” and commented about his opposition to violence of his own volition at the outset of the meeting with the former Israeli lawmakers.“He said he’s against violence and while he supports an opposition to Israeli policies, he only supports a peaceful and non-violent one,” Beilin told the Times of Israel Sunday evening.“He said everyone loses from violence,” he added. The official PA news site Wafa also reported that Abbas told his Israeli guests that he supports non-violence.“The President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas affirmed the Palestinian side’s commitment to achieving peace and popular, peaceful resistance because killing, settlement building, destroying and uprooting people will not achieve peace and security for any party in the region,” the Wafa report stated. However, the Wafa report did not specifically state that Abbas’s comment about “popular, peaceful resistance” was in response to the stabbing. The assailant was named as 17-year-old Khalil Jabarin of Yatta, a village south of Hebron. He was moderately wounded after being shot and was being treated in an Israeli hospital. In stark contrast to the PA president, senior Hamas official Husam Badran praised the stabbing, calling it “heroic.”“Our Palestinian people today received the news of the heroic attack that the revolutionary Khalil Jabarin carried out in the ‘Gush Etsion’ settlement, south of Jerusalem,” Badran said in a statement.Islamic Jihad also praised the attack in a statement and described it “a natural response to the aggression and crimes that the Zionist terror perpetrates at the expense of the Palestinian people, land and holy sites,” according to the Islamic Jihad-linked Palestine Today.Abbas has long expressed support for non-violence.He told Israeli peace activists in a meeting in Ramallah two weeks ago that he supports Israel’s security, underlining that the Palestinian and the Israeli security forces work together “on a daily basis” and that he and his people “do anything possible so that no Israeli gets hurt,” according to Peace Now, whose executive director attended the meeting with the PA president.Israel and the PA maintain security cooperation in the West Bank.A senior PA official based in the southern West Bank said Jabarin’s father warned PA security forces that his son had gone missing Sunday morning, after he fought with him about going to school, but did not pass the warning on to Israeli authorities.“All we knew was that the boy had run away. She did not provide specific details about where or when she believed Jabarin would carry out an attack, the army said.Israeli security forces planned to arrest members of the terrorist’s family in order to further investigate what information they had about his plans before he carried out the attack, the IDF added.
300 Palestinians riot along Gaza fence for second night-Gazans throw rocks, firebombs at IDF troops, who respond with tear gas, live fire; no injuries reported on either side-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-18 September 2018
Hundreds of Palestinians rioted along the Gaza security fence on Sunday night, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops on the other side, according to the Israel Defense Forces. In response, the soldiers launched tear gas canisters at the rioters and fired live rounds “in accordance with the rules of engagement,” an army spokesperson said.According to the military, approximately 300 Palestinians in total took part in the violent demonstrations, spread out among three main locations. They threw rocks, firebombs and high-powered fireworks at the soldiers. No injuries on either side were immediately reported.Similar riots were held along the Gaza security fence on Saturday night, with some 450 Palestinians taking part, the army said.Three grenades and pipe bombs were thrown at Israeli troops in those protests. The IDF responded with tear gas and live fire.No soldiers or Palestinians were injured. The ongoing clashes at the border, which Israel says are being orchestrated by Gaza’s Hamas rulers, have included regular rock and Molotov cocktail attacks on troops, as well as shootings and IED attacks aimed at IDF soldiers and attempts to breach the border fence.Gaza protesters have also launched incendiary kites and balloons into Israel, sparking fires that have destroyed forests, burned crops, and killed livestock. On Sunday, the army also said it was carrying out searches for a possible drone that was launched from Gaza into Israel days earlier, Hadashot news reported. The IDF fears the drone was meant to cause damage by crashing into people or structures, according to the report. On Friday, 12,000 Palestinians participated in the weekly demonstrations along the border. The army said rioters burned tires and hurled rocks at Israeli soldiers, who responded according to open-fire regulations. In several incidents, grenades and bombs were hurled at the troops. Shrapnel from one pipe bomb lightly injured an IDF officer who was treated at the scene. In response, the military said, an aircraft and a tank struck two Hamas posts.Israel says its actions — and in particular the use of live ammunition — are necessary to defend the border and stop mass infiltrations from the territory. Israel has accused the Hamas terror group of encouraging the protests and using them as cover to attempt to carry out terror attacks, including firing at troops and attempting to breach the border fence.Times of Israel staff and Agencies contributed to this report.
China tells Taiwan to stop all mainland spying and sabotage-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
BEIJING (Reuters) - China accused Taiwan's spy agencies on Sunday of stepping up efforts to steal intelligence with the aim of "infiltration" and "sabotage", and warned the island against further damaging already strained cross-strait ties. The relevant agencies in Taiwan must end such activities immediately, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing An Fengshan, a spokesman for China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office.State television kicked off on Saturday the first in a series of programs detailing cases in which Chinese students studying in Taiwan are said to be targeted by domestic spies who lure them with money, love and friendship. The allegations come as China ramps up efforts to encourage Taiwanese to settle in China permanently, offering new identity cards and other inducements.Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement released at the weekend China has "framed a case" against Taiwan and refuted the accusations."The Mainland Affairs Council asks the mainland authorities not to politically manipulate mainland students studying in Taiwan and frame our personnel for engaging in espionage," it said. Such a move would "further raise suspicion and misunderstanding across the strait", it said.Taiwan has warned its people to be careful of the risks involved living in an autocratic country with internet censorship and other drawbacks.China and Taiwan frequently trade accusations of spying. In 2017, a Chinese student studying in Taiwan was sentenced to prison for collecting sensitive information through contacts in Taiwan schools and government departments, and for trying to build a spy network on the island.Taiwan started to allow Chinese students to study at its universities in 2009.China sees democratic Taiwan as a wayward province and has never renounced the use of force to bring it to heel, a prospect of which Taiwan is often reminded, with Chinese warships and fighter jets periodically pressing close to the island. It has also lured away some of the few nations with diplomatic ties to the self-ruled island in recent months. But as Beijing further isolates Taiwan, Taipei is discreetly nurturing security ties with regional powers by sharing intelligence of Chinese military deployments, sources have told Reuters.(Reporting by Ryan Woo and Ben Blanchard; Additional reporting by Yimou Lee in TAIPEI; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Flooding fears surge as rivers rise in Hurricane Florence’s wake-Officials brace for worst flooding in North Carolina’s history; 740,000 homes and businesses without power, some possibly for weeks-By CHUCK BURTON-TOI-18 September 2018
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (AP) — Catastrophic flooding from Florence spread across the Carolinas on Sunday, with roads to Wilmington cut off by the epic deluge and muddy river water swamping entire neighborhoods miles inland. “The risk to life is rising with the angry waters,” Gov. Roy Cooper declared, as the storm’s death toll climbed to 15.As the storm continued to crawl inland, dumping more than 30 inches of rain in spots since Friday, fears of historic flooding grew and tens of thousands were ordered evacuated from communities along the state’s steadily rising rivers — with the Cape Fear, Little River, Lumber, Waccamaw and Pee Dee rivers all projected to burst their banks. In Wilmington, with roads leading in and out of the coastal city underwater and streams still headed upward, residents waited for hours outside stores and restaurants for basic necessities like water. Police guarded the door of one store, and only 10 people were allowed inside at a time.Woody White, chairman of the board of commissioners of New Hanover County, said officials were planning for food and water to be flown into the coastal city of nearly 120,000 people.“Our roads are flooded,” he said. “There is no access to Wilmington.”About 70 miles away from the coast, residents near the Lumber River stepped from their homes directly into boats floating in their front yards; river forecasts showed the scene could be repeated in towns as far as 250 miles inland as waters rise for days.Downgraded to a tropical depression overnight, Florence was still massive. Radar showed parts of the sprawling storm over six states, with North and South Carolina in the bull’s-eye.Thousands were ordered to evacuate from what officials said could be the worst flooding in North Carolina history, but it was not clear how many had fled or even could. The head of Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long, said officials were focused on finding people and rescuing them.“We’ll get through this. It’ll be ugly, but we’ll get through it,” Long told NBC’s “Meet The Press.”US President Donald Trump said federal emergency workers, first responders and law enforcement officials are “working really hard” on Florence. He tweeted that as the storm “begins to finally recede, they will kick into an even higher gear. Very Professional!”The storm’s death toll climbed to 15 when a pickup truck ran off Interstate 20 in South Carolina and struck an overpass support, killing the driver. Earlier, authorities said a man drowned after his pickup truck flipped into a drainage ditch along a flooded South Carolina road and two people died from inhaling carbon monoxide from a generator in their home.About 740,000 homes and businesses remained without power in the Carolinas, and utilities said some could be out for weeks.Victor Merlos was overjoyed to find a store open for business in Wilmington since he had about 20 relatives staying at his apartment, which still had power. He spent more than $500 on cereal, eggs, soft drinks and other necessities, plus beer.“I have everything I need for my whole family,” said Merlos. Nearby, a Waffle House restaurant limited breakfast customers to one biscuit and one drink, all take-out, with the price of $2 per item.Florence was still spinning slowly atop the Carolinas as it pulled warm water from the ocean and hurled it onshore. Kenneth Campbell had donned waterproof waders intending to check out his home in Lumberton, but he did not bother when he saw the Coast Guard and murky waters in his neighborhood.“I’m not going to waste my time. I already know,” he said.As rivers swelled toward record levels, state regulators and environmental groups were monitoring the threat from gigantic hog and poultry farms located in low-lying, flood-prone areas. The industrial-scale farms typically feature vast pits of animal feces and urine that can pose a significant pollution threat if they are breached or inundated by floodwaters. In past hurricanes, flooding at dozens of farms also left hundreds of thousands of dead hogs, chickens and other decomposing livestock bobbing in floodwaters.Stream gauges across the region showed water levels rising steadily, with forecasts calling for rivers to crest Sunday and Monday at or near record levels: The Little River, the Cape Fear, the Lumber, the Neuse, the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee were all projected to burst their banks, possibly flooding nearby communities.Evacuations were ordered for thousands of people, and the Defense Department said about 13,500 military personnel had been assigned to help relief efforts.Authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of up to 7,500 people living within a mile (1.6 kilometers) of a stretch of the Cape Fear River and the Little River, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the North Carolina coast. The evacuation zone included part of the city of Fayetteville, population 200,000.John Rose owns a furniture business with stores less than a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the river. Rain-soaked furniture workers helped him quickly empty more than 1,000 mattresses from a warehouse in a low-lying strip mall.“It’s the first time we’ve ever had to move anything like this,” Rose said. “If the river rises to the level they say it’s going to, then this warehouse is going to be under water.”Fayetteville’s city officials, meanwhile, got help from the Nebraska Task Force One search and rescue team to evacuate 140 residents of an assisted-living facility in Fayetteville to a safer location at a church.Already, more than two feet (60 centimeters) of rain had fallen in places, and forecasters were saying there could be an additional 1½ feet (45 centimeters) before Sunday was out.“Flood waters are still raging across parts of our state, and the risk to life is rising with the angry waters,” Cooper said. “If you aren’t watching for them, you are risking your life.”Officials were warning residents not only to stay off the roads but also to avoid using GPS systems.“As conditions change, GPS navigation systems are not keeping up with the road closures and are directing people onto roads that are confirmed closed and/or flooded,” the state Transportation Department said on Twitter.Florence weakened to a tropical depression early Sunday and was crawling west at 8 mph (13 kph). At 5 a.m., the storm was centered about 20 miles (35 kilometers) southwest of Columbia, South Carolina. Its winds were down to 35 mph (55 kph).In Goldsboro, North Carolina, home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, roads that frequently flood were already closed Saturday by rushing water. Dozens of electric repair trucks massed to respond to damage expected to hit central North Carolina as rainwater collected into rivers headed to the coast. On Saturday evening, Duke Energy said heavy rains caused a slope to collapse at a coal ash landfill at a closed power station outside Wilmington. Duke spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said about 2,000 cubic yards (1,530 cubic meters) of ash were displaced at the Sutton Plant and that contaminated storm water likely flowed into the plant’s cooling pond.Near the flooded-out town of New Bern, where about 455 people had to be rescued from the swirling flood waters, water completely surrounded churches, businesses and homes. In the neighboring town of Trenton, downtown streets were turned to creeks full of brown water.Still, spirits were high at the Trent Park Elementary School in New Bern, where 44-year-old Cathy Yolanda Wright took shelter after being rescued from her flooded home Saturday. Wright, who sings in the choir at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist, led residents at the shelter in an energetic singalong.People clapped and shouted, “Amen!” and “Thank you, Lord.”
North Carolina devastated as floodwaters rise from deadly storm Florence-[Reuters]-By Ernest Scheyder and Anna Mehler Paperny-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
WILMINGTON/WILSON, N.C. (Reuters) - Deadly storm Florence drenched North Carolina with more downpours on Sunday, cutting off the coastal city of Wilmington, damaging tens of thousands of homes and threatening worse flooding as rivers fill to the bursting point. The death toll rose to at least 17.Florence, a onetime hurricane that weakened to a tropical depression by Sunday, dumped up to 40 inches (100 cm) of rain on parts of North Carolina since Thursday, and continued to produce widespread heavy rain over much of North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, the National Weather Service said."The storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference. Many rivers "are still rising, and are not expected to crest until later today or tomorrow."Some rivers were not expected to crest until Monday or Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.More than 900 people were rescued from rising floodwaters and 15,000 remained in shelters in the state, Cooper said. Many of those rescues took place on swift boats in Wilmington, a historic coastal city of about 117,000 people on a peninsula between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean.Rescue crews negotiated downed trees and power lines to reach stranded residents, Mayor Bill Saffo told WHQR radio."There are no roads ... that are leading into Wilmington that are passable because of the flooding that is taking place now inland," Saffo said. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the area until at least Monday morning and said up to 8 inches (20 cm) more rain could fall in some areas, creating an elevated risk for landslides in Western North Carolina.Officials urged those who had evacuated to stay away."Our roads are flooded, there is no access into Wilmington," New Hanover County Commission Chairman Woody White told a news conference. "We want you home, but you can't come yet."In Leland, a low-lying city north of Wilmington, homes and businesses were engulfed by water that rose up to 10 feet (3 meters) over Highway 17, submerging stop signs in what local people called unprecedented flooding. The sheriff's department and volunteers, including locals and some who came from Texas, rescued stranded residents by boat, extracting families, infants, the elderly and pets.Gas stations were abandoned and fallen trees made many roads impassable. The whir of generators could be heard throughout the city, a sound not expected to dim soon as crews work to restore power. In New Bern, a riverfront city near North Carolina's coast, Bryan Moore and his nephew Logan did exactly what authorities warned against: they left their homes to go swimming in the floodwaters after having spent days at home without electricity or running water."We were stir-crazy from being inside so long," Moore said. "Feels great. The water's really cool. ... We're just having a good old time out here, enjoying the weather."More than 641,000 homes and businesses were without electricity in North and South Carolina and surrounding states, down from a peak of nearly 1 million.Florence set a record in the state for rain from a hurricane, surpassing the previous record of 24 inches (61 cm) set by Hurricane Floyd, which killed 56 people in 1999, said Bryce Link, a meteorologist with private forecasting service DTN Marine Weather. The storm killed at least 11 people in North Carolina, including a mother and child killed by a falling tree, state officials said. Six people died in South Carolina, including four in car accidents and two from carbon monoxide from a portable generator.South Carolina's governor urged anyone in a flood-prone area to evacuate."Those rivers in North Carolina that have received heavy rainfall are coming our way," Governor Henry McMaster said during a news conference. "They have not even begun (to crest). But they will. And the question is how high will the water be, and we do not know."By Sunday night, Florence's winds had dropped to about 30 miles per hour (45 kph), the National Hurricane Center said, with some weakening forecast over the next 24 hours before intensifying once again as an extratropical low-pressure center. The center of the storm was about 45 miles (70 km) north-northeast of Greenville and moving north at 10 mph (17 kph), the hurricane center said.(Reporting by Anna Mehler Paperny and Ernest Scheyder; Additional reporting by Bernie Woodall in Miami; Jessica Resnick-Ault in New York and Makini Brice in Washington; Writing by Lisa Shumaker and Daniel Trotta; Editing by Frances Kerry, Peter Cooney and Jonathan Oatis)
Philippine paddy rice losses from typhoon exceed forecasts-[Reuters]-By Enrico Dela Cruz-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines lost a total of 250,730 tonnes of paddy rice due to the strong typhoon that hit its northern provinces over the weekend, according to initial official estimates, exceeding a worst-case forecast by 60 percent. The Philippines, one of the world's biggest rice importers, had been under pressure to boost its stocks of the grain even before Typhoon Mangkhut struck, with soaring retail prices helping to push inflation to its highest in nearly a decade. The Department of Agriculture initially estimated crop damage at about 9.6 billion pesos ($177 million), but said that may increase as more field reports come in."We're looking at about 11 to 12 billion (pesos) in agricultural damage," Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said in an interview with CNN Philippines."It's not a nice figure to look at."Typhoon Mangkhut has swept over Hong Kong and Macau and on into China's southeast province of Guangdong, after devastating the Philippines, where the death toll is likely to surpass 50.MORE RICE, CORN IMPORTS LIKELY-Even before the storm hit, the Philippines had already planned to import an additional 383,500 tonnes of rice this year, on top of approved purchases earlier this year of more than 1 million tonnes. The state grains procurement agency, National Food Authority, also has a "standby authority" to import an additional 250,000 tonnes for delivery early next year.Prospects of new deals with the Philippines pushed up export prices last week from its main supplier Vietnam. The nation's rice crop losses from the typhoon were bigger than the agriculture ministry's forecast of up to 157,000 tonnes in a worst-case scenario."The rice sector could recover because we have coordinated with the National Irrigation Administration ... to not close the irrigation systems because right after the typhoon our farmers actually could replant," Pinol said in the interview."But for corn, it's a sad sight. Almost all crops were damaged," he said. Pinol said he may recommend that the country also import corn to fill the possible shortfall.Pinol downplayed the impact of rice crop losses on prices, saying there are still enough stocks in typhoon-hit regions and that the harvest season in other areas has begun.(Reporting by Enrico dela Cruz; Editing by Richard Pullin and Tom Hogue)
Hong Kong, southern China clean up after super typhoon-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The financial hub of Hong Kong began clearing up on Monday after being battered by one of the strongest typhoons in recent years, with financial markets and offices operating as normal.Super typhoon Mangkhut, with hurricane-force winds well over 200 kilometers per hour (124 miles/h), had barreled past the northern tip of the Philippines, killing at least 50 people. It then skirted south of Hong Kong and the neighboring gambling hub of Macau, before making landfall in China.Parts of Hong Kong and Macau were severely flooded, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities. China Central Television, the state broadcaster, said four people had been killed in Guangdong, China's most populous province of over 100 million residents. The state broadcaster also said flood warnings had been issued for 38 rivers in the neighboring region of Guangxi, while 12 coastal monitoring stations reported their biggest-ever waves. It also said more than 13,300 hectares of farmland had been damaged. As many as 2.45 million people in Guangdong province had been relocated on Sunday night, the official Xinhua news agency reported. The China Meteorological Administration said the typhoon, dubbed "King of Storms", swept west to Guangxi province at 6 a.m. (2200 GMT on Sunday) and weakened to a "tropical storm". It forecast the storm to hit the regions of Guizhou, Chongqing and Yunnan on Monday. The meteorological administration said Mangkhut was one of the 10 biggest storms to hit southeast China since 1949 - when records began - with wind speeds at around 162 km/h.Across Hong Kong, authorities strived to clear roads of debris, including toppled trees and bamboo scaffolding. Some buildings, including the One Harbourfront office tower, had many windows smashed after a day in which some of the city's skyscrapers had swayed with the ferocious gusts."Yesterday's storm was very strong. Even for a person of my weight, I was about to be blown down by the wind which made me very scared," said a 70-year-old resident surnamed Fung."It was very serious this time."Stock and financial markets opened as normal on Monday in Hong Kong and the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Some transport services remained suspended, though flights in the region were slowly resuming after a shutdown on Sunday, stranding many thousands of passengers. In Macau, badly hit by a super typhoon last year, authorities were much more prepared this time, ordering casinos to close late on Saturday night as the storm approached.Casinos were operational again early on Monday though authorities were still struggling to restore power to some of the 20,000 households that suffered power cuts.Macau gambling stocks were down in early Monday trade.(Reporting by David Stanway in Shanghai and James Pomfret in Hong Kong; Editing by Christopher Cushing)

US reallocating West Bank-Israel coexistence funds to Arab-Jewish programs-Official confirms $10 million cut from Palestinian-Israel initiatives, says some will go to enhance similar programs inside Israel-By AFP-TOI-18 September 2018
The United States on Sunday confirmed it has cut additional aid to the Palestinians for programs supporting conflict resolution with Israelis, adding to more than $500 million in other cuts. The latest cuts come from $10 million in programs on reconciliation involving Palestinians as well as Jewish and Arab Israelis. The portion of the money involving Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip was being redirected to programs between Jewish and Arab Israelis, a US Embassy official said.It was not clear how much of the $10 million was being redirected.US officials also could not confirm whether the latest cut meant all non-security related aid to the Palestinians had now been eliminated.“As announced in August, the administration redirected more than $200 million that was originally planned for programs in the West Bank and Gaza,” a US Embassy official said.“At the same time, we redirected a portion of the $10 million which was planned for conflict management and mitigation.”The official said the portion involving Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza would be used “to enhance” programs in Israel instead.US President Donald Trump has said he will withhold aid from the Palestinians to force them to negotiate as the White House prepares a plan for Middle East peace — what he has called the “ultimate deal.”The Palestinian leadership cut off contact with the White House after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December. They accuse Trump of blatant bias in favor of Israel and say he is blackmailing them to force them to accept the White House’s terms. In recent weeks, the US government has announced more than $500 million in cuts in Palestinian aid, including canceling support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. It has maintained security-related aid, having provided $61 million in assistance this year.
Israel to deport French-US professor arrested at West Bank protest-Without informing attorney, Frank Romano sent to immigration authorities, after allegedly blocking demolition of Bedouin village-By AFP and TOI staff-18 September 2018
An American-French law professor arrested by Israel while protesting against the demolition of a Palestinian village in the West Bank is to be deported, his lawyer said Sunday.US-born Frank Romano, who teaches law at the Paris Nanterre University, was detained on Friday while taking part in a demonstration at the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem.“There is an administrative decision to deport him,” lawyer Gaby Lansky told reporters.“Like thieves in the night, instead of bringing Frank Romano to a hearing to free him from jail, which I requested and which was set for 4 p.m. in Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court, without notifying me or the court, at 2 p.m., police transferred him to immigration for deportation,” Lansky wrote on Twitter.A spokeswoman for the Israeli Interior Ministry could not immediately confirm such a decision. The village of roughly 200 people in the West Bank will be demolished, after an Israeli court paved the way for its razing.Anti-demolition activists said Romano was arrested along with two Palestinian protesters when they tried to block bulldozers sent in by Israeli authorities to seal off an access road to the village. The activists said that Romano stood in front of a bulldozer that was clearing barriers that had been set up to slow demolition.Israeli police confirmed three people were detained for causing disturbances at Khan al-Ahmar on Friday, but did not release details of their identities.Pictures on social media show him being led from the scene by Israeli riot police.Last week, the High Court of Justice cleared the way for the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar, rejecting a final appeal amid a growing international outcry over the fate of the West Bank community.Israel says Khan al-Ahmar, a hamlet of corrugated shacks east of Jerusalem, was illegally built and has offered to resettle residents 12 kilometers (7 miles) away.Opponents of the demolition argue that it is part of an effort to enable the expansion of the nearby settlement of Kfar Adumim and to create a region of contiguous Israeli control from Jerusalem almost to the Dead Sea, a move critics say will bisect the West Bank, making a contiguous Palestinian state impossible.Israeli forces on Thursday demolished five trailers that were set up recently outside the hamlet. The trailers, erected out of shipping containers, had been set up earlier in the week as a form of protest against the expected razing. The United Nations and the European Union have repeatedly warned Israel that razing Khan al-Ahmar would undermine peace efforts with Palestinians and constitutes a violation of international law.On Thursday, the EU Parliament passed a resolution saying the impending resolution would set a “negative precedent” for other Bedouin communities facing demolition in the West Bank.“Israel bears full responsibility for providing the necessary services, including education, healthcare and welfare, for the people living under its occupation, in line with the Fourth Geneva Convention,” the resolution read.Israel claims the structures, mostly makeshift shacks and tents, were built without permits and pose a threat to the village residents because of their proximity to a highway. But the villagers — who have lived at the site, then in controlled Jordan, since the 1950s, after the state evicted them from their Negev homes — argue that they had little alternative but to build without Israeli construction permits, as such permits are almost never issued to Palestinians for building in places in Area C of the West Bank, such as Khan al-Ahmar, where Israel has full control over civilian affairs.Under the Oslo Accords, the West Bank was split into three areas: A, which is governed by the PA; B, which is under joint Israeli-PA control; and C, which is under full Israeli control. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem claims that the demolition is part of a plan to minimize Palestinian presence in Area C, which accounts for 60 percent of the West Bank.
Massachusetts residents cleared to return to areas hit by gas explosions-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-September 18, 2018
(Reuters) - Residents of three Massachusetts communities were allowed to return to their homes on Sunday for the first time since a series of gas explosions killed one man and set dozens of buildings on fire.Natural gas leaks, believed to have been caused by over-pressurized lines, on Thursday triggered a series of explosions and fires in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence, communities northwest of Boston. Local officials ordered residents of some 8,000 homes and businesses to evacuate and shut off electricity to prevent further fires. It was the largest natural gas pipeline accident, in terms of the number of buildings involved, in the United States since 2010, when an interstate line operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Co ruptured in San Bruno, California, destroying 38 buildings, damaging 70 more, and killing eight people.Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, which provides service in the affected communities, declined to comment on Sunday on what caused the leaks, saying federal investigators would decide. The company had said before the releases that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, including the affected suburbs.Columbia Gas' parent, NiSource Inc , has set up a phone center and an office in Lawrence to accept residents' claims for property damage and costs related to the fires and evacuation, NiSource spokesman Ken Stammen said in an email. The National Transportation Safety Board, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Massachusetts Fire Marshal's office, and Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the gas leaks and explosions."There is no sign that anyone did anything intentional," Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the state Fire Marshal said on Friday. She said the FBI would stay involved until the NTSB, which is leading the probe, determined what caused the leaks.Utility crews worked through the weekend to complete checks and shut gas meters on homes and buildings in the affected areas, Eversource Energy , the utility overseeing the review, said on Sunday. State officials asked Eversource to oversee the initial response to the gas release.Electric power is being restored and will be available to all customers by noon on Sunday, Eversource said on its website.Utility workers are evaluating the area's gas lines for safety and later will evaluate residents' gas appliances before natural gas service can be restored, Eversource said.(Reporting by Gary McWilliams; Editing by Nick Zieminski)
