November rainfall hits new record
The Whitesands area was sealed off after recent flooding. Scotland has had its wettest November in nearly 30 years, new Met Office figures have revealed. Western and southern parts were worst affected, with 73% more rain than the November average, a spokesman said. And the Met's observing site at Bishopton said Glasgow had its wettest November since records began in 1914.
Eastern and northern areas had a third more rain than the November average for 1971-2000. The Met has also ruled out a sustained dry spell in the near future. A spokesman said: The outlook at the moment is that it will remain unsettled, with further rain and showers particularly towards the end of the week. He told the BBC Scotland news website that the country had 244mm of rainfall last month.That represents a 47% increase on the November average over a 29-year period between 1971 and 2000. In the decades to come, heavy rainfall events in the winter will become more frequent Met Office spokesman The west of Scotland - which also incorporates the Borders - saw 320mm of rain last month, which is 73% more than the November average. Northern Scotland had 261mm of rain, 36% more than the monthly average. Eastern areas saw a 33% increase on the average rainfall for November, with 153mm. However, the Met Office said the increase could not be attributed to climate change.
A spokesman said: You can't connect one specific record rainfall directly to climate change. Even during the long, gradual process of climate change, there are still inter-annual variabilities which would've happened anyway. However, recent Met Office research suggests that in the decades to come, heavy rainfall events in the winter will become more frequent in a warmer climate.

Flood watch and flood warning figures released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) showed that flood watches and severe flood warnings have almost trebled within the past three years. Flood warnings have more than doubled since 2003, the statistics revealed. Professor Alan Werritty, of Dundee University's geography department, said he was not surprised by the increase. He added: Climate scientists are projecting that Scotland is going to get wetter in the west and that's consistent with what we've experienced this autumn. Warning has to be a key issue here because we cannot protect every possible location that might be at risk. But we can try and give people warnings and I think that message is coming through much more clearly than it was five years ago.
Very depressing
Dr Cynthia McVey, a psychologist at Glasgow Caledonian University, said incessant rainfall could also affect an individual's emotional wellbeing. She explained: I don't think people object to rain when they have a variety of weather. But when people are trying to do Christmas shopping, continuous rain makes it even more stressful. Christmas can also help because there is an air of festivity about it - it's a time when traditionally you stay indoors with a roaring fire and have parties - and that mitigates the effects of the weather. I think it would be very different though if this weather persists after the New Year - that would be a very depressing time. A spokeswoman for Transport Scotland said it was producing a landslide study which would be completed next summer. She said it would involve a detailed review of the trunk road network to identify the areas of greatest risk.

South
In the South, showers & thunderstorms are possible in the Mississippi River Delta and the Tennessee Valley today. There's an outside chance that an isolated thunderstorm could produce some brief severe-sized hail (penny-sized or larger). Rainfall amounts are expected to be a half of an inch or less, but there could be pockets of heavier rains today. Yesterday in Southeast Texas, heavy rains fell in the Houston metro area with Angleton receiving 2.68 inches of rain, and Houston's Hobby Airport picking up 1.82 inches.
Texas will dry out today, but clouds will be increasing across Georgia and the Carolinas ahead of the system bringing the rains to Mississippi, Alabama, much of Tennessee, Louisiana, and eastern Arkansas. Across Florida, an on-shore wind continues resulting in rough seas and a high risk of rip currents along Florida's East Coast. Temperatures are expected to mild once again all across the South, with highs in the 60s and 70s. That's quite a change from the record lows set across most of the South last Friday. Rain will move eastward on Wednesday and be mostly off the coast by Thursday, except in Florida where rain is possible into Friday.
Midwest
In the Midwest, rain will affect much of the Ohio River Valley and the Great Lakes today. In Minnesota and western Iowa, a rain/snow mix is possible with icy conditions possible at the west end of Lake Superior (around Duluth). Areas of dense fog are possible this morning over the Upper Midwest, including the Northern Plains. An isolated thunderstorm in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, or Western Kentucky could briefly produce some hail. Temperatures are again expected to be well above average, with highs in the 50s across the Mid-Mississippi River and Ohio River Valleys and 40s near the Great Lakes. Precipitation will clear the region by Thursday, with the exception being around the Great Lakes.
West
In the West, a brief rest from yesterday's rain and wind in the Pacific Northwest. The rain, snow, and wind from yesterday moves to the Northern Rockies bringing snows to the higher elevations of Idaho and Montana. Snow is still possible in the Cascade and Olympic Mountain Ranges with the heaviest snow still expected in the Cascades. Snow levels range from as low as 2500 feet in the Olympics to over 5000 feet in Idaho. In the Southwest, dry and mild conditions are expected to last throughout most of the week ahead. Another chance of rain is possible toward the weekend in Southern California and Arizona. Temperatures are also expected to cool in the West over the weekend.
Northeast
In much of the Northeast, another unusually pleasant day is on tap with above average temperatures and a lack of precipitation. The only rain will be in Western New York and Northeast Pennsylvania (near Lake Erie). Rain will spread across the region on Wednesday, with a rain/snow mix possible in Northern New York and Northern New England, and continuing through the rest of the work week. The weekend looks dry & mild for the Megalopolis with a few showers possible in Northern New England.

CANBERRA, Australia Wildfires on the island of Tasmania have destroyed at least 22 houses Monday, a local official said. The fires gutted houses on the fringes of the island's northeast town of St. Helens and also knocked out electricity and telephone
communications, Mayor Robert Legge said.The information I've got at the moment is 22 or 23 houses, Legge said. The information is very, very sketchy because the phones are not working down there because of power failure.Tasmania Fire Service station officer Danny Reid also said it was not yet possible to determine how many houses had been destroyed because of breakdowns in communication links.Reid said the blaze has burned 7,400 acres and was still growing.

Olmert will discuss peace process, bilateral talks with Pope
Rome, Dec. 11, 2006 (CWNews.com) Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to discuss the stalled negotiations between his government and the Holy See during his meeting with Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) on Wednesday, December 13.
The Israeli leader, who requested an audience with the Holy Father, is also expected to speak about prospects for peace in the Holy Land. He may also repeat his government’s invitation for the Pontiff to visit Israel. For several years, Vatican officials have been expressing growing frustration with the slow pace of negotiations to complete a juridical-financial accord that would resolve the legal status of Church properties and Catholic communities in Israel. That accord was promised under the terms of the basic agreement that led to Vatican recognition of Israel in 1993. But talks have been slow and inconclusive, with Vatican diplomats regularly complaining that their Israeli counterparts show little interest in completing the agreement. Vatican insiders have said that it is unlikely Pope Benedict will visit Israel before the accord is finalized.

WASHINGTON (AFP) US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she wanted quick results in North Korean disarmament talks that resume next week, setting a two-year time frame to dismantle Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.
I'm delighted the talks are going to start again, but they have to start to show results pretty soon, Rice told AFP in an exclusive interview a week before the six-party negotiations begin in Beijing following a 13-month break.Rice said Washington was ready to offer North Korea economic aid, energy assistance and improved political relations if it follows through on a September 2005 joint statement in which it pledged to abandon the development of nuclear weapons.
But she declined to provide details of specific incentives being put on the table by Washington ahead of the talks, which will also involve China, Japan, Russia and South Korea.I think that everyone is looking, in the next round or so, for the North Koreans to do something that demonstrates that they are in fact committed to denuclearization, she said.Rice said her goal was to have North Korea complete irreversible steps to dismantle its nuclear arms program before the end of President George W. Bush's term in January 2009.It's the only timetable I've got -- I'll be long gone in two years, of course that's my timetable, she said.
Rice said it would take longer for North Korea to fully break down its nuclear infrastructure, which includes a plutonium-producing reactor at Yongbyon, fuel reprocessing facilities and a test site where the Stalinist regime exploded its first nuclear device on October 9.But it shouldn't take very long to take some steps that would clearly be irreversible in terms of denuclearization, she said.
The six-nation forum started in 2003 in an effort to stop the North acquiring nuclear weapons.North Korea signed on to the vaguely worded September 2005 joint statement to give up its nuclear ambitions in return for security guarantees, energy benefits and other aid.But another round of talks in November failed to make any progress, and North Korea pulled out of the negotiations shortly afterwards to protest US financial sanctions imposed against it for alleged money laundering and counterfeiting.It then conducted its first nuclear weapons test on October 9, triggering global condemnation including from closest ally China -- and unprecedented United Nations sanctions.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US has finally signed on to a European draft resolution imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program and is optimistic it will quickly pass through the UN Security Council, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told AFP in an exclusive interview. It's a good resolution, Rice said after the revised draft was submitted to the full Security Council at UN headquarters in New York earlier Monday.Rice said she was optimistic the resolution aimed at convincing Iran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program, would pass soon, though she stopped short of predicting a final vote before the end of the year.
It has to be voted soon. I think this has gone on long enough, she said.The six major powers dealing with the issue Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany, have been negotiating for weeks over the terms of a sanctions resolution.But agreement proved elusive as Russia and China objected to an earlier European draft as too harsh, while Washington felt it did not go far enough.But Rice said on Monday that she was satisfied with the latest version, notably because it will be voted under Chapter 7 of the UN charter, which makes the measures mandatory for all UN members.It establishes Chapter 7, which to my mind is the most important element here, she said.It would make very clear to the Iranians that they are not going to be able to pursue this program and remain integrated into the international system and I would hope would give them pause so they might consider coming back to negotiations, she said.The text, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, would mandate a ban on trade with Iran on goods related to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and impose financial and travel restrictions on persons and entities

JERUSALEM: A slip of the tongue by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert about Israel's nuclear policy ballooned into a domestic crisis Tuesday for the already embattled Israeli leader.In an interview with a German television station broadcast Monday, Olmert appeared to list Israel among the world's nuclear powers, violating the country's long-standing policy of not officially acknowledging that it has atomic weapons.Asked by the interviewer about Iran's calls for the destruction of Israel, Olmert replied that Israel has never threatened to annihilate anyone.Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map, Olmert said. SAN FRANCISCO--Nuclear weapons are even more dangerous than we thought. Increased urbanization around the globe, combined with greater proliferation of nuclear materials and political instability, has increased the risks of nuclear war, said a panel of scientists at the American Geophysical Union, a conference taking place here this week. An exchange of 100 15-kiloton weapons between India and Pakistan would kill approximately 20 million people, said Richard Turco, a professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences at the University California, Los Angeles. Fifty 15-kiloton weapons would kill about 4 million people in the U.S., if dropped on the biggest cities in the country. During the Cold War, defense analysts estimated that the U.S. would lose 4 million people in a massive attack from the Soviet Union involving thousands of weapons, he noted.
We're seeing increased urbanization around the world. We are creating megacities around the world, Turco said.Tehran has 10 million people. The obvious thing to attack if you don't have many weapons is a megacity. And those are just the direct deaths. The smoke created by a 100-bomb exchange in the subtropical regions would loft in the stratosphere and stay for years, Turco said.
This would cause global temperatures to decline by 1.25 degrees Celsius, thereby shortening growing seasons for several crops for years. In the early years, some crops would completely miss their growing seasons.
Worldwide precipitation would decline by 10 percent. Interestingly, Turco and other panelists noted that the energy released by the fires that would follow a nuclear exchange would likely be greater than the energy released by the explosions. The fires get accelerated by the thermal pulse, a huge burst of energy at the time of the explosion of a bomb. It's like bringing a piece of the sun down to Earth, he said. One hundred 15-kiloton weapons represents only a fraction--three-hundredths of 1 percent, actually--of the world's arsenal of nuclear weapons. A 15-kiloton weapon is about the same size of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. India and Pakistan are believed to have 50 weapons each. Around 40 nations have enough nuclear material to make a 15-kiloton bomb, said Owen Toon, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Colorado.
Leaders Voice Outrage on Conference on Holocaust in Iran

A gathering in Iran billed as a conference to debate the Nazi annihilation of six million Jews continued on its second day to spark outrage in the West, drawing fierce criticism today from European leaders, the Vatican and the White House. Calling the Holocaust an immense tragedy for all humanity, the Vatican issued a statement admitting of no doubt that the mass murder took place, and said it must serve as a warning for people to respect the rights of others. The statement used the Hebrew word for the Holocaust, Shoah, and expressed great compassion for what happened to the Jews during World War II, according to Agence France-Presse.
The last century saw an attempt to exterminate the Jewish people, which led to the killing of millions of Jews of all social categories merely because of the fact that they belonged to that people, the Vatican statement said.The White House said in a statement today that the gathering of Holocaust deniers in Tehran is an affront to the entire civilized world, as well as to the traditional Iranian values of tolerance and mutual respect. While people around the world mark International Human Rights Week and renew the solemn pledges of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which was drafted in the wake of the atrocities of World War II, the Iranian regime perversely seeks to call the historical fact of those atrocities into question and provide a platform for hatred, the statement said.
The conference in Tehran, which began Monday, attracted Holocaust deniers, discredited scholars and white supremacists from around the world, who made presentations questioning whether Nazi Germany used gas chambers to exterminate some six million Jews and millions of other undesirables, as well as other aspects of the historical record of the Holocaust.
Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has frequently claimed that the Holocaust was a myth used to justify the occupation of Palestine, meaning the creation of the state of Israel. Last summer, Iran held a contest for cartoons about the Holocaust, in reaction to a controversy over cartoons published in Denmark that lampooned the Prophet Muhammad. While many Western countries have recently urged that Iran and Syria be included in negotiations to deal with conflicts in the region, including the violence in Iraq, some have pointed to the conference as indicative of the extremist nature of the current Iranian government.The White House said that it recognizes that not everyone in Iran agrees with the most extreme elements in the regime there, and that the United States would stand with those who seek to overcome oppression, injustice, and tyranny.

He called for the commission’s proposed Framework Decision on Combating Racism and Xenophobia to be adopted as soon as possible.On Monday, Germany summoned the Iranian chargé d’affaires in Berlin to express its anger over the conference. The French foreign minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy, also condemned the gathering.
The Iranian foreign ministry said that 67 people from 30 countries were participating in the two days of meetings. On Monday, Rasoul Mousavi, head of the Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies, said it would provide an opportunity to discuss the Holocaust away from Western taboos and the restriction imposed on them in Europe. Among those attending from the United States was the former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, whose prepared remarks, published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, asserted that the gas chambers in which millions perished did not actually exist. He said on Monday that the depiction of Jews as the overwhelming victims of the Holocaust gave the moral high ground to the Allies as victors of the war, and allowed Jews to establish a state on the occupied land of Palestine.Others attending were Robert Faurisson, an academic from France, who said in his speech that the Holocaust was a myth.Bendikt Frings, a psychologist from Germany, said on Monday that he had come to the conference to thank Mr. Ahmadinejad for initiating discussion on the subject. A parade of storms is lined up from the state of Washington to Korea across the Pacific Ocean. Each system is forecast to impact the West Coast arriving 24 to 36 hours apart this week. Monday's storm heads inland overnight turning the rain to showers in Washington and Oregon. Snow levels are lowering from 4,000 feet to 2,500 feet Tuesday and 3,500 feet Wednesday as colder air moves in behind the storm. Showers and locally heavy mountain snow will continue overnight with the persistent onshore flow. A weaker storm will move in behind the main storm early Tuesday morning prolonging the showery activity another 6 to 12 hours.
Lighter showers will linger even behind the weaker storm Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning. The next significant storm will arrive with wind, rain and snow during the early morning hours Wednesday lasting into Wednesday evening, and then the final system for this round will arrive Thursday night. From out of the central U.S., a weaker storm will move from the southern Plains overnight to the Great Lakes by Tuesday evening. A band of rain will precede the cold front from Michigan to the northern Gulf Coast. A few thunderstorms will accompany this expanding rain band and one or two of these thunderstorms from south-central Illinois to eastern Arkansas and northwest Mississippi could produce hail or damaging-wind gusts. Some wet snow will fall from northwest Iowa through central Minnesota Tuesday and eastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan Tuesday night. Any accumulations are expected to be light.

Iran stirs up hatred with Holocaust conference

Iran's foreign minister questioned the right of Israel to exist yesterday at the opening of a provocative conference on the Holocaust. The two-day gathering in Teheran is being attended by dozens of international guests, including a British anti-Zionist rabbi, who will hear presentations debating the use of the gas chambers.The Teheran conference was attended by six members of Jews United Against Zionism. Some wore badges that had Israel’s flag crossed out.In opening remarks, Manouchehr Mottaki said: If the official version of the Holocaust is thrown into doubt, then the identity and nature of Israel will be thrown into doubt. If... it is proved that the Holocaust was a historical reality, then what is the reason for the Palestinians having to pay the cost of the Nazis' crimes?
The conference, Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision, was initiated by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, who has described the killing of six million Jews in Nazi Germany as a myth and called for Israel to be wiped off the map. His remarks have caused grave international alarm at a time that Iran is feared to be developing nuclear weapons.In an address broadcast to the nation yesterday, Mr Ahmadinejad questioned why the West would not allow any investigation into the Holocaust. He is expected to address the meeting today.Earlier in the day the president faced the first protest since winning elections 18 months ago. Students lit a firework and burned his photograph in the audience as he delivered a speech at the Amir Kabir technical university.Up to 60 protesters chanted death to the dictator, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The president's supporters in the audience then shouted back, before his speech continued. There were no reports of arrests.
Israel, the United States and a leader of Iran's own 25,000-strong Jewish community condemned the Teheran meeting, which is believed to be the first of its kind sponsored by a state. Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, called it a sick phenomenon that shows the depth of the hatred of the fundamentalist Iranian regime.
The enlightened world must condemn this conference and the one who has convened it in the most determined manner, he said en route to Berlin to attend a conference where historians affirmed the accuracy of Nazi genocide data.Among the participants in the Teheran conference were six members of Jews United Against Zionism, who were dressed in the traditional long black coats and hats of Orthodox Jews. Some wore badges with Israel's flag crossed out.One of two rabbis in the contingent was Ahron Cohen, from London. He said: We came here to put the Orthodox Jewish viewpoint. We certainly say there was a Holocaust... but in no way can it be used as a justification for perpetrating unjust acts against the Palestinians. Rabbi Cohen is a member of Neturei Karta (Guardians of the City), a small global anti-Zionist movement which holds that the state of Israel cannot exist until the coming of the Messiah.
Jon Benjamin, chief executive of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: They are a fringe, but a fringe that detractors of Israel are making much of. The conference sits with Iran's agenda of demonising Israel, and linking Israel's existence to nothing more than a guilt trip of the Western powers.The Iranians claimed that 67 foreigners visited from 30 countries. They included the American
David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, and the French writer Georges Thiel, who has been convicted in France for spreading revisionist theories about the mass extermination of Jews.Many Iranians have admitted being embarrassed about the meeting, which followed Iran's decision to hold a competition for cartoons about the Holocaust in October. JERUSALEM (AFP) Israeli officials have downplayed the chance of armed conflict with Syria, a day after a senior intelligence officer said Damascus was preparing for war with the Jewish state. Syria is constructing military apparatus to try and counter the supremacy of (Israeli) air, ground and naval forces, but nothing indicates that it intends to attack us, Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh told public radio Monday.A senior government official also said that we can see no signs of a nearing war with Syria.
The chief of parliament's influential foreign affairs and defense committee, Tsahi Hanegbi, told the radio: No one in Israel has precise information on Syria's intentions and we are examining all possibilities.The army takes into account these estimates and adapts them on the ground, he said.
On Sunday, General Yossi Beidetz, the head of the military intelligence research division, told a cabinet meeting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was preparing his forces for a military conflict with Israel.Syria has accelerated the production of long-range missiles and has deployed anti-tank rockets on its border with Israel, a senior intelligence official quoted Beidetz as saying, referring to the armistice line on the occupied Golan Heights.In a later statement, a spokesman said: The army does not have any information indicating offensive intentions (by Syria) on the border.
UWB gets approval in Europe

The European Commission's Radio Spectrum Committee gave the green light to UWB (ultrawideband), paving the way for the technology to be used in Europe as early as February.
The committee gave what's known as a positive regulatory opinion, which means the decision will now be formally adopted by the Commission and will then become binding E.U. law, said Mona Lund, a press officer for the European Commission, in an e-mail exchange. UWB is a wireless technology that can transmit data at 480Mbps and is designed primarily to move data over short ranges. Applications could include sending video from a computer to a television or photos from a digital camera to a computer. Lund could not reveal the restrictions that will govern the use of UWB in Europe, designed to ensure that UWB doesn't interfere with other wireless devices, but said that the Commission will publish the regulations over the next few days.
The committee was mindful of existing restrictions on UWB that have already been set in other regions of the world.
Globally harmonized products would of course benefit consumers, and we believe there is sufficient overlap between the UWB regulations in the U.S. and in the E.U. to encourage manufacturers to produce equipment that can be used in different regions, Lund said. Despite some historical objections from groups concerned that UWB could interfere with other wireless services, the 70 percent majority required to pass the decision in the Radio Spectrum Committee was easily obtained, Lund said. She expects the formal adoption procedure to be complete by early February after which member states will be required to adopt the measure as soon as possible and within six months. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the use of UWB in 2002, but UWB products that comply with the industry trade group's certification process haven't yet hit the market. The technology has been controversial because rather than operating over a narrow frequency band, it transmits using very low power over a very wide swath of spectrum.
That raised concerns of interference in some wireless industries. UWB is expected to be used as a cable replacement. Developers of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) products are creating UWB devices that can wirelessly send video from an end user's DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) router, for example, to a set-top box connected to a TV.

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan - Officials from Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority met along the shores of the Dead Sea to settle details of a study to save the shrinking body of water, agreeing to proceed with plans to draw water from the Red Sea.
The surface level of the Dead Sea the saltiest water in the world at the lowest point on Earth that is estimated at 1,200 feet below sea level has fallen about three feet a year in the past 20 years because of evaporation and allegedly the diversion of rivers by Syria and Israel.The Dead Sea and its surrounding has been the source of much human social history and it is linked to the three monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam.In 2005, the three concerned parties appealed to the World Bank to coordinate financing the feasibility study. The World Bank have agreed and appealed to the donor countries.
Four donor countries — France, Japan, the United States and the Netherlands — have committed themselves to participate in financing the $15 million study. The study will look at the environmental and social consequences of transferring water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, Jordan's Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammed Thafer al-Alem said Sunday.Geological experts warned that the drop in the water level would increase the earthquake possibilities. They also warn the Dead Sea will disappear in 50 years if current trends persist.The Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, said the study is an excellent example for cooperation, peace and conflict reduction.The Red-Dead Sea canal project, which is expected to cost more than $1 billion, would exploit the 1,320-foot difference in altitude between both areas.If implemented, the 248-mile desert area between the two seas would benefit from the fresh water to turn the region into an agricultural hub for the benefit of the three countries. A desalination project is also envisaged to provide drinking water for Amman. Israel and the Palestinian territories would also benefit from the drinking water.
Lieberman: Israelis Should Pledge Allegiance

Strategic Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman declared at a Washington conference Sunday that Israelis Arabs and Jews alike should be required to pledge allegiance to the Jewish State. Lieberman, who addressed a group at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, associated with the Brookings Institute, said Israeli citizens on both ends of the political spectrum need to learn that there are obligations as well as privileges connected with living in the Jewish State.Israel has the right to demand full allegiance from all its citizens, the Yisrael Beiteinu party chairman said firmly. He who is not ready to recognize Israel as a Jewish and Zionist state
cannot be a citizen in the country. This applies to extremists of the Neturei Karta as well as to the extremist factions of the Islamic Movement.Lieberman has repeatedly criticized Israeli-Arab Knesset Members for declaring support for terrorist entities committed to the destruction of Israel and traveling to meet with leaders in enemy countries, such as Syria and Lebanon.
Arab MKs who collaborate with the enemy and meet with Hamas leaders should be dealt with harshly, Lieberman said last month. Speaking in Israel's parliament, he demanded the government punish Knesset Members who incite and cooperate with terror and who sit in this house… who continue to freely meet with Hamas, with Hizbullah, and who go to make visits in Lebanon. In his remarks, which drew much criticism, Lieberman said such unauthorized meetings should be considered as collaboration with the enemy and treated as such: At the end of the Second World War, not only criminals were killed in Nuremberg, but also those who collaborated with them. I hope this will be the fate of the collaborators in this house.He added that Arab MKs declared Israel’s Independence Day as Nakba Day [Day of Disaster] and raised black flags. South America to look at EU-type model

South American leaders have said they will set up a high-level body to examine the idea of setting up an EU-style regional union. Bolivia's president Evo Morales finished a two-day summit of the South American Community of Nations by saying that he hoped that a such an economic bloc could become a reality within five years.We don't want it to take as long as with the European Union - 50 years to create. I hope it can take us less. EU to choose Galileo seat despite technical delays

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU ministers are set to choose the seat of Europe's satellite navigation programme Galileo - an ambitious project to compete with the American GPS by 2011 - but a decision on private contractors has been delayed. Eleven countries - the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany, Malta, Belgium, France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Greece and Italy - have applied to host the public body to oversee the programme dubbed the Galileo Supervisory Authority. The EU's transport ministers will debate the location of the supervisory body during a working lunch within a general meeting in Brussels on Tuesday (12 December).The move comes after EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot admitted on Friday that negotiations with the group of eight private partners who will manage the Galileo system - originally planned to close in late 2005 - were still ongoing.
No one has an interest in seeing these talks fail, he said in a Brussels press conference, but did not say when the talks would resume.I think that even if there is a little delay in signing this concession contract, things are on the right track, said Mr Barrot.
The European Commission has launched an open consultation with stakeholders on how the EU should make the best use of the satellite navigation applications which will emerge once Galileo is completed, mainly in terms of the legal framework for the role of public bodies in its development.Brussels believes the system will bring new prospects to various commercial sectors which will eventually help to boost the economic growth and jobs and also improve the daily life of citizens around the world.The system is mainly supposed to be used for civilian purposes - such as the management of Europe's transport infrastructure - railways, roads and sea lanes - and will cost about €1 billion from the bloc's common coffers in the next seven-year budgetary period.
With around 30 satellites projected to be part of the system, it could offer services such as direction finding and search and rescue.These economic returns are many times higher than the costs of the system itself, Mr Barrot said.However, the commissioner recently sparked controversy by suggesting that Galileo's satellite data could be used for military purposes - an option which remains open he said on Friday.Apart from the Galileo seat, transport ministers will also debate the commission's proposals on cutting roaming charges and postal services liberalisation.

JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert listed Israel among the nations that have nuclear weapons in an interview aired on Monday but his office said the remark was misinterpreted.
Israel has a long-standing policy of ambiguity on nuclear weapons, refusing to confirm or deny whether it has them. But Olmert's remarks came days after incoming U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in testimony to a Senate committee that Israel was a member of the club of nuclear-armed nations.The U.S. and Israel suspect Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. In an interview with a German TV station aired Monday before Olmert arrived in the country, he was asked about Iran's threat to destroy Israel.Olmert responded that Israel has never threatened to annihilate anyone and added: Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map. Can you say that this is the same level, when you are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel, Russia?
Olmert's office said the quote was taken out of context, noting that in other parts of the interview, Olmert several times refused to confirm that Israel has nuclear weapons. Olmert spoke in English, which is not his first language.Israel's policy has always been to declare that it will not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East, without confirming or denying it has them.Foreign experts have concluded that Israel has hundreds of nuclear bombs and is the sixth-largest nuclear weapons power in the world.

In this Channel 4 documentary Tony Robinson investigates the people with powerful political friends in the White House, who are trying to bring about the end of the world. Julia Bard reports.Revelation, the last book in the New Testament, is filled with bizarre, violent and terrifying images. Its origins are unclear and its content is controversial. Some say it is the work of St John but many others believe he could not have been the author. But whoever wrote it, described apocalyptic visions of plagues, famines, wars, devils, wild beasts and rivers of blood. It is so strange and complex that scholars down the centuries have continually reinterpreted its message and meaning.Today, though, a growing number of American evangelical Christians reckon they have cracked the code.
These End Timers believe that every weird word of Revelation predicts real events. Like a Hollywood sci fi movie they say that any time now the world will end. And when it does, true believers in Christ will be whisked up to heaven in an event called The Rapture while non-believers are left behind on earth to face famine, war, terror and destruction as the forces of good and evil fight to the bitter end.
Political implications
If this was confined to the personal beliefs of a few fundamentalists it would be of little significance but, says Tony Robinson, the leaders of the End Time movement are rich, well-connected and very powerful. Though the USA constitution enshrines the separation of church and state End Timers are frequent visitors to the White House. No one knows if George W Bush is an End Timer himself, but his policies are at one with those of the evangelical Right and his language is often apocalyptic, such as when he describes the war on terror as 'the epic struggle of good and evil.
Jerusalem
According to the prophecy, Jerusalem is where this final battle is to be played out. No stranger to conflict and violence, this city is the focus of End Timers' dreams of eternal paradise, because, according to their beliefs, this is where Christ will come back to earth. But first, they say, the Jews must return. End Timers believe that the establishment of the State of israel in 1948 was a fulfilment of the biblical prophecy and that since then 'the last days clock has been ticking.Many of them interpret the US government's policies on Israel and the Middle East from a biblical point of view. Before the war in Iraq, the USA supported a negotiated settlement in which Israel would return the Occupied Territories to the Palestinians. By 2004, after a torrent of criticism of the Roadmap to Peace, Bush's position had changed and now there is no call for a large-scale withdrawal from the West Bank.End Timers parade through the streets of Jerusalem and take large amounts of cash to illegal West Bank settlements to encourage the residents to entrench themselves more deeply on this Palestinian land. In Jerusalem itself, Jews are being bankrolled by Christian fundamentalists to reside in Arab houses. The End Timers think that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke (was removed from the scene) because he wanted to give back some of the Palestinian land.
Many Israelis are very worried about the kind of support they are being offered. One journalist says that this is not based on Israel's needs and that there is no support for peacemaking. On the contrary, the agenda of the Evangelicals is war, so as to fulfil violent prophecy of Revelation.Provocatively, some End Timers have joined forces with a fundamentalist Jewish group who want to rebuild the Temple of Solomon – touching on the ancient Jewish yearning for their destroyed Temple. But the place where they plan to build it has deep meaning for the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Temple Mount, where Islam's 3rd most holy site, Al-Aqsa (murderer) Mosque, is situated, is the spot where Muslim, Jewish and Christian believers think that God created Adam, Abraham prepared his son Isaac to be sacrificed, and according to his vision, Muhammed was carried on a winged horse.
Mainstream Christians in the locality are appalled. They say attempts to rebuild the Temple are inflammatory and threaten to unleash even more bloodshed in the Middle East.
Predictions of war
Could it be that this is precisely what they are trying to provoke, in order to hasten the end of days? According to End Timers, when the believers are whisked up to heaven those left behind will face the ultimate battle between good and evil. It will take seven years to count the dead, they say – the time of Tribulation, a hell on earth. Israel will survive, according to this story, but will have a sudden victory only after a long war. Some say this means nuclear war and they support the war in Iraq because they believe that will bring it closer. Megiddo is the Hebrew name for Armageddon: the town where this carnage will occur. For some End Timers, all this is big – very big – business. Tim LaHaye's Christian fiction series, Left Behind, has sold 63 million books, and movies of the books have been made by Cloud Ten Pictures. The internet is awash with websites which tell you how to prepare for The Rapture, and there are American shops to sell you everything you need to survive (for around $3,000) if you're unfortunate enough to be left behind.The concept of the Antichrist originated in Medieval times, and is not found in the Bible. Nevertheless these evangelical Christians believe that the Antichrist is 'walking among us right now', the incarnation of evil, luring people to his cause with false
promises of peace. For End Timers, the United Nations, whose role is to seek and maintain peace across the world, fits this description perfectly.
Undermining Africa
Now End Time beliefs are now spreading to Africa, with dire consequences. Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, is a born again Christian who is lionised by American End Timers.
An American preacher in the capital, Kampala, says that the answers to Uganda's problems are not political, economic or educational, but can be found in the Bible, which he describes as God's constitution for the planet.Newspaper editor Andrew Mwenda is appalled by these Doomsday preachers, who he believes are converting young people and diverting them from fulfilling their potential and pursuing their careers. He says: This country is on a highway to hell. Uganda was a model in Africa of AIDS education and prevention and the rate of infection was falling. Now Museveni is promoting abstinence rather than safer sex, the number of cases is rising.Teacher Julius Othieno describes children being taken out of school, and not taking medicine when they are ill, in order to hasten their death.
Revelation
What is the real source of these ideas that so many people attribute to the book of Revelation? Whoever wrote it sheltered in a cave on the Greek island of Patmos, probably a refugee from Roman occupied Palestine. He is also likely to have consumed the local hallucinogenic magic mushrooms. So rather than taking these bizarre visions literally, it might make more sense to try to understand them in their historical context. There are some 40 apocalyptic books from this era but this was the only one that made it into the Bible. If the author was writing about the hated Roman Empire, it could be that the seven heads of the beast meant the seven emperors. The mark of the beast could be the head of the emperor on the coins. The dreaded 666 very likely represented three letters indicating the Emperor Nero – representing letters by numbers was, and is, common in Hebrew. If so, instead of being a description of a world in chaos, it could be seen as a book of morality, optimism and faith.Let's hope the End Timers start to see it like that before their actions really do bring about the end of the world.

A parade of storms is lined up from the state of Washington to Korea across the Pacific Ocean. Each system is forecast to impact the West Coast arriving 24 to 36 hours apart this week. Monday's storm heads inland overnight turning the rain to showers in Washington and Oregon. Snow levels are lowering from 4,000 feet to 2,500 feet Tuesday and 3,500 feet Wednesday as colder air moves in behind the storm. Showers and locally heavy mountain snow will continue overnight with the persistent onshore flow. A weaker storm will move in behind the main storm early Tuesday morning prolonging the showery activity another 6 to 12 hours.
Lighter showers will linger even behind the weaker storm Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning. The next significant storm will arrive with wind, rain and snow during the early morning hours Wednesday lasting into Wednesday evening, and then the final system for this round will arrive Thursday night. From out of the central U.S., a weaker storm will move from the southern Plains overnight to the Great Lakes by Tuesday evening. A band of rain will precede the cold front from Michigan to the northern Gulf Coast. A few thunderstorms will accompany this expanding rain band and one or two of these thunderstorms from south-central Illinois to eastern Arkansas and northwest Mississippi could produce hail or damaging-wind gusts. Some wet snow will fall from northwest Iowa through central Minnesota Tuesday and eastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan Tuesday night. Iran stirs up hatred with Holocaust conference

Iran's foreign minister questioned the right of Israel to exist yesterday at the opening of a provocative conference on the Holocaust. The two-day gathering in Teheran is being attended by dozens of international guests, including a British anti-Zionist rabbi, who will hear presentations debating the use of the gas chambers.The Teheran conference was attended by six members of Jews United Against Zionism. Some wore badges that had Israel’s flag crossed out.In opening remarks, Manouchehr Mottaki said: If the official version of the Holocaust is thrown into doubt, then the identity and nature of Israel will be thrown into doubt. If... it is proved that the Holocaust was a historical reality, then what is the reason for the Palestinians having to pay the cost of the Nazis' crimes?
The conference, Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision, was initiated by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, who has described the killing of six million Jews in Nazi Germany as a myth and called for Israel to be wiped off the map. His remarks have caused grave international alarm at a time that Iran is feared to be developing nuclear weapons.In an address broadcast to the nation yesterday, Mr Ahmadinejad questioned why the West would not allow any investigation into the Holocaust. He is expected to address the meeting today.Earlier in the day the president faced the first protest since winning elections 18 months ago. Students lit a firework and burned his photograph in the audience as he delivered a speech at the Amir Kabir technical university.Up to 60 protesters chanted death to the dictator, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The president's supporters in the audience then shouted back, before his speech continued. There were no reports of arrests.
Israel, the United States and a leader of Iran's own 25,000-strong Jewish community condemned the Teheran meeting, which is believed to be the first of its kind sponsored by a state. Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, called it a sick phenomenon that shows the depth of the hatred of the fundamentalist Iranian regime.
The enlightened world must condemn this conference and the one who has convened it in the most determined manner, he said en route to Berlin to attend a conference where historians affirmed the accuracy of Nazi genocide data.Among the participants in the Teheran conference were six members of Jews United Against Zionism, who were dressed in the traditional long black coats and hats of Orthodox Jews. Some wore badges with Israel's flag crossed out.One of two rabbis in the contingent was Ahron Cohen, from London. He said: We came here to put the Orthodox Jewish viewpoint. We certainly say there was a Holocaust... but in no way can it be used as a justification for perpetrating unjust acts against the Palestinians. Rabbi Cohen is a member of Neturei Karta (Guardians of the City), a small global anti-Zionist movement which holds that the state of Israel cannot exist until the coming of the Messiah.
Jon Benjamin, chief executive of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: They are a fringe, but a fringe that detractors of Israel are making much of. The conference sits with Iran's agenda of demonising Israel, and linking Israel's existence to nothing more than a guilt trip of the Western powers.The Iranians claimed that 67 foreigners visited from 30 countries. They included the American
David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, and the French writer Georges Thiel, who has been convicted in France for spreading revisionist theories about the mass extermination of Jews.Many Iranians have admitted being embarrassed about the meeting, which followed Iran's decision to hold a competition for cartoons about the Holocaust in October. JERUSALEM (AFP) Israeli officials have downplayed the chance of armed conflict with Syria, a day after a senior intelligence officer said Damascus was preparing for war with the Jewish state. Syria is constructing military apparatus to try and counter the supremacy of (Israeli) air, ground and naval forces, but nothing indicates that it intends to attack us, Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh told public radio Monday.A senior government official also said that we can see no signs of a nearing war with Syria.
The chief of parliament's influential foreign affairs and defense committee, Tsahi Hanegbi, told the radio: No one in Israel has precise information on Syria's intentions and we are examining all possibilities.The army takes into account these estimates and adapts them on the ground, he said.
On Sunday, General Yossi Beidetz, the head of the military intelligence research division, told a cabinet meeting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was preparing his forces for a military conflict with Israel.Syria has accelerated the production of long-range missiles and has deployed anti-tank rockets on its border with Israel, a senior intelligence official quoted Beidetz as saying, referring to the armistice line on the occupied Golan Heights.In a later statement, a spokesman said: The army does not have any information indicating offensive intentions (by Syria) on the border.
UWB gets approval in Europe

The European Commission's Radio Spectrum Committee gave the green light to UWB (ultrawideband), paving the way for the technology to be used in Europe as early as February.
The committee gave what's known as a positive regulatory opinion, which means the decision will now be formally adopted by the Commission and will then become binding E.U. law, said Mona Lund, a press officer for the European Commission, in an e-mail exchange. UWB is a wireless technology that can transmit data at 480Mbps and is designed primarily to move data over short ranges. Applications could include sending video from a computer to a television or photos from a digital camera to a computer. Lund could not reveal the restrictions that will govern the use of UWB in Europe, designed to ensure that UWB doesn't interfere with other wireless devices, but said that the Commission will publish the regulations over the next few days.
The committee was mindful of existing restrictions on UWB that have already been set in other regions of the world.
Globally harmonized products would of course benefit consumers, and we believe there is sufficient overlap between the UWB regulations in the U.S. and in the E.U. to encourage manufacturers to produce equipment that can be used in different regions, Lund said. Despite some historical objections from groups concerned that UWB could interfere with other wireless services, the 70 percent majority required to pass the decision in the Radio Spectrum Committee was easily obtained, Lund said. She expects the formal adoption procedure to be complete by early February after which member states will be required to adopt the measure as soon as possible and within six months. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the use of UWB in 2002, but UWB products that comply with the industry trade group's certification process haven't yet hit the market. The technology has been controversial because rather than operating over a narrow frequency band, it transmits using very low power over a very wide swath of spectrum.
That raised concerns of interference in some wireless industries. UWB is expected to be used as a cable replacement. Developers of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) products are creating UWB devices that can wirelessly send video from an end user's DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) router, for example, to a set-top box connected to a TV.

SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan - Officials from Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority met along the shores of the Dead Sea to settle details of a study to save the shrinking body of water, agreeing to proceed with plans to draw water from the Red Sea.
The surface level of the Dead Sea the saltiest water in the world at the lowest point on Earth that is estimated at 1,200 feet below sea level has fallen about three feet a year in the past 20 years because of evaporation and allegedly the diversion of rivers by Syria and Israel.The Dead Sea and its surrounding has been the source of much human social history and it is linked to the three monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam.In 2005, the three concerned parties appealed to the World Bank to coordinate financing the feasibility study. The World Bank have agreed and appealed to the donor countries.
Four donor countries — France, Japan, the United States and the Netherlands — have committed themselves to participate in financing the $15 million study. The study will look at the environmental and social consequences of transferring water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, Jordan's Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammed Thafer al-Alem said Sunday.Geological experts warned that the drop in the water level would increase the earthquake possibilities. They also warn the Dead Sea will disappear in 50 years if current trends persist.The Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, said the study is an excellent example for cooperation, peace and conflict reduction.The Red-Dead Sea canal project, which is expected to cost more than $1 billion, would exploit the 1,320-foot difference in altitude between both areas.If implemented, the 248-mile desert area between the two seas would benefit from the fresh water to turn the region into an agricultural hub for the benefit of the three countries. A desalination project is also envisaged to provide drinking water for Amman. Israel and the Palestinian territories would also benefit from the drinking water.
Lieberman: Israelis Should Pledge Allegiance

Strategic Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman declared at a Washington conference Sunday that Israelis Arabs and Jews alike should be required to pledge allegiance to the Jewish State. Lieberman, who addressed a group at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, associated with the Brookings Institute, said Israeli citizens on both ends of the political spectrum need to learn that there are obligations as well as privileges connected with living in the Jewish State.Israel has the right to demand full allegiance from all its citizens, the Yisrael Beiteinu party chairman said firmly. cannot be a citizen in the country. This applies to extremists of the Neturei Karta as well as to the extremist factions of the Islamic Movement.Lieberman has repeatedly criticized Israeli-Arab Knesset Members for declaring support for terrorist entities committed to the destruction of Israel and traveling to meet with leaders in enemy countries, such as Syria and Lebanon.
Arab MKs who collaborate with the enemy and meet with Hamas leaders should be dealt with harshly, Lieberman said last month. Speaking in Israel's parliament, he demanded the government punish Knesset Members who incite and cooperate with terror and who sit in this house… who continue to freely meet with Hamas, with Hizbullah, and who go to make visits in Lebanon. In his remarks, which drew much criticism, Lieberman said such unauthorized meetings should be considered as collaboration with the enemy and treated as such: At the end of the Second World War, not only criminals were killed in Nuremberg, but also those who collaborated with them. I hope this will be the fate of the collaborators in this house.He added that Arab MKs declared Israel’s Independence Day as Nakba Day [Day of Disaster] and raised black flags. South America to look at EU-type model

South American leaders have said they will set up a high-level body to examine the idea of setting up an EU-style regional union. Bolivia's president Evo Morales finished a two-day summit of the South American Community of Nations by saying that he hoped that a such an economic bloc could become a reality within five years.We don't want it to take as long as with the European Union - 50 years to create. EU to choose Galileo seat despite technical delays

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU ministers are set to choose the seat of Europe's satellite navigation programme Galileo - an ambitious project to compete with the American GPS by 2011 - but a decision on private contractors has been delayed. Eleven countries - the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany, Malta, Belgium, France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Greece and Italy - have applied to host the public body to oversee the programme dubbed the Galileo Supervisory Authority. The EU's transport ministers will debate the location of the supervisory body during a working lunch within a general meeting in Brussels on Tuesday (12 December).The move comes after EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot admitted on Friday that negotiations with the group of eight private partners who will manage the Galileo system - originally planned to close in late 2005 - were still ongoing.
No one has an interest in seeing these talks fail, he said in a Brussels press conference, but did not say when the talks would resume.I think that even if there is a little delay in signing this concession contract, things are on the right track, said Mr Barrot.
The European Commission has launched an open consultation with stakeholders on how the EU should make the best use of the satellite navigation applications which will emerge once Galileo is completed, mainly in terms of the legal framework for the role of public bodies in its development.Brussels believes the system will bring new prospects to various commercial sectors which will eventually help to boost the economic growth and jobs and also improve the daily life of citizens around the world.The system is mainly supposed to be used for civilian purposes - such as the management of Europe's transport infrastructure - railways, roads and sea lanes - and will cost about €1 billion from the bloc's common coffers in the next seven-year budgetary period.
With around 30 satellites projected to be part of the system, it could offer services such as direction finding and search and rescue.These economic returns are many times higher than the costs of the system itself, Mr Barrot said.However, the commissioner recently sparked controversy by suggesting that Galileo's satellite data could be used for military purposes - an option which remains open he said on Friday.Apart from the Galileo seat, transport ministers will also debate the commission's proposals on cutting roaming charges and postal services liberalisation.

Olmert says Israel among nuclear nations DEC 11,2006
JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert listed Israel among the nations that have nuclear weapons in an interview aired on Monday but his office said the remark was misinterpreted.
Israel has a long-standing policy of ambiguity on nuclear weapons, refusing to confirm or deny whether it has them. But Olmert's remarks came days after incoming U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in testimony to a Senate committee that Israel was a member of the club of nuclear-armed nations.The U.S. and Israel suspect Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. In an interview with a German TV station aired Monday before Olmert arrived in the country, he was asked about Iran's threat to destroy Israel.Olmert responded that Israel has never threatened to annihilate anyone and added: Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map. Can you say that this is the same level, when you are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel, Russia?
Olmert's office said the quote was taken out of context, noting that in other parts of the interview, Olmert several times refused to confirm that Israel has nuclear weapons. Olmert spoke in English, which is not his first language.Israel's policy has always been to declare that it will not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East, without confirming or denying it has them.Foreign experts have concluded that Israel has hundreds of nuclear bombs and is the sixth-largest nuclear weapons power in the world.

WW3 THE 3 WAVES THAT MARCH TO ISRAEL

The Third and Final Wave of WW3 is when all Nations march to Jerusalem, but JESUS bodily returns to earth and destroys them,sets up his KINGDOM OF RULE FOR 1000 YEARS THEN FOREVER.

Here we are again folks lukewarmers that say the world will end, they better read the Bible again the World will never end only the sinners will be destroyed and eaten by the Birds in WW3.

In this Channel 4 documentary Tony Robinson investigates the people with powerful political friends in the White House, who are trying to bring about the end of the world. Julia Bard reports.Revelation, the last book in the New Testament, is filled with bizarre, violent and terrifying images. Its origins are unclear and its content is controversial. Some say it is the work of St John but many others believe he could not have been the author. But whoever wrote it, described apocalyptic visions of plagues, famines, wars, devils, wild beasts and rivers of blood. It is so strange and complex that scholars down the centuries have continually reinterpreted its message and meaning.Today, though, a growing number of American evangelical Christians reckon they have cracked the code.
These End Timers believe that every weird word of Revelation predicts real events. Like a Hollywood sci fi movie they say that any time now the world will end. And when it does, true believers in Christ will be whisked up to heaven in an event called The Rapture while non-believers are left behind on earth to face famine, war, terror and destruction as the forces of good and evil fight to the bitter end.
Political implications
If this was confined to the personal beliefs of a few fundamentalists it would be of little significance but, says Tony Robinson, the leaders of the End Time movement are rich, well-connected and very powerful. Though the USA constitution enshrines the separation of church and state End Timers are frequent visitors to the White House. No one knows if George W Bush is an End Timer himself, but his policies are at one with those of the evangelical Right and his language is often apocalyptic, such as when he describes the war on terror as 'the epic struggle of good and evil.
Jerusalem
According to the prophecy, Jerusalem is where this final battle is to be played out. No stranger to conflict and violence, this city is the focus of End Timers' dreams of eternal paradise, because, according to their beliefs, this is where Christ will come back to earth. But first, they say, the Jews must return. End Timers believe that the establishment of the State of israel in 1948 was a fulfilment of the biblical prophecy and that since then 'the last days clock has been ticking.Many of them interpret the US government's policies on Israel and the Middle East from a biblical point of view. Before the war in Iraq, the USA supported a negotiated settlement in which Israel would return the Occupied Territories to the Palestinians. By 2004, after a torrent of criticism of the Roadmap to Peace, Bush's position had changed and now there is no call for a large-scale withdrawal from the West Bank.End Timers parade through the streets of Jerusalem and take large amounts of cash to illegal West Bank settlements to encourage the residents to entrench themselves more deeply on this Palestinian land. In Jerusalem itself, Jews are being bankrolled by Christian fundamentalists to reside in Arab houses. The End Timers think that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke (was removed from the scene) because he wanted to give back some of the Palestinian land.
Many Israelis are very worried about the kind of support they are being offered. One journalist says that this is not based on Israel's needs and that there is no support for peacemaking. On the contrary, the agenda of the Evangelicals is war, so as to fulfil violent prophecy of Revelation.Provocatively, some End Timers have joined forces with a fundamentalist Jewish group who want to rebuild the Temple of Solomon – touching on the ancient Jewish yearning for their destroyed Temple. But the place where they plan to build it has deep meaning for the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Temple Mount, where Islam's 3rd most holy site, Al-Aqsa (murderer) Mosque, is situated, is the spot where Muslim, Jewish and Christian believers think that God created Adam, Abraham prepared his son Isaac to be sacrificed, and according to his vision, Muhammed was carried on a winged horse.
Mainstream Christians in the locality are appalled. They say attempts to rebuild the Temple are inflammatory and threaten to unleash even more bloodshed in the Middle East.
Predictions of war
Could it be that this is precisely what they are trying to provoke, in order to hasten the end of days? According to End Timers, when the believers are whisked up to heaven those left behind will face the ultimate battle between good and evil. It will take seven years to count the dead, they say – the time of Tribulation, a hell on earth. Israel will survive, according to this story, but will have a sudden victory only after a long war. Some say this means nuclear war and they support the war in Iraq because they believe that will bring it closer. Megiddo is the Hebrew name for Armageddon: the town where this carnage will occur. For some End Timers, all this is big – very big – business. Tim LaHaye's Christian fiction series, Left Behind, has sold 63 million books, and movies of the books have been made by Cloud Ten Pictures. The internet is awash with websites which tell you how to prepare for The Rapture, and there are American shops to sell you everything you need to survive (for around $3,000) if you're unfortunate enough to be left behind.The concept of the Antichrist originated in Medieval times, and is not found in the Bible. Nevertheless these evangelical Christians believe that the Antichrist is 'walking among us right now', the incarnation of evil, luring people to his cause with false
promises of peace. For End Timers, the United Nations, whose role is to seek and maintain peace across the world, fits this description perfectly.
Undermining Africa
Now End Time beliefs are now spreading to Africa, with dire consequences. Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, is a born again Christian who is lionised by American End Timers.
An American preacher in the capital, Kampala, says that the answers to Uganda's problems are not political, economic or educational, but can be found in the Bible, which he describes as God's constitution for the planet.Newspaper editor Andrew Mwenda is appalled by these Doomsday preachers, who he believes are converting young people and diverting them from fulfilling their potential and pursuing their careers. He says: This country is on a highway to hell. Uganda was a model in Africa of AIDS education and prevention and the rate of infection was falling. Now Museveni is promoting abstinence rather than safer sex, the number of cases is rising.Teacher Julius Othieno describes children being taken out of school, and not taking medicine when they are ill, in order to hasten their death.
Revelation
What is the real source of these ideas that so many people attribute to the book of Revelation? Whoever wrote it sheltered in a cave on the Greek island of Patmos, probably a refugee from Roman occupied Palestine. He is also likely to have consumed the local hallucinogenic magic mushrooms. So rather than taking these bizarre visions literally, it might make more sense to try to understand them in their historical context. There are some 40 apocalyptic books from this era but this was the only one that made it into the Bible. If the author was writing about the hated Roman Empire, it could be that the seven heads of the beast meant the seven emperors. The mark of the beast could be the head of the emperor on the coins. The dreaded 666 very likely represented three letters indicating the Emperor Nero – representing letters by numbers was, and is, common in Hebrew. If so, instead of being a description of a world in chaos, it could be seen as a book of morality, optimism and faith.Let's hope the End Timers start to see it like that before their actions really do bring about the end of the world.
