The U.N. children's agency said Tuesday that an estimated 46 million people - 19 million of them children - fled violence and conflict last year but remained in their home country, and millions more were displaced by disasters.A UNICEF report said there has been a steep increase in the number of internally displaced people, or IDPs, from 25 million a decade ago to more than 40 million in the last five years.Last year, more than 40 per cent of the displaced were under the age of 18, it said."Millions of displaced children around the world are already going without proper care and protection," UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a statement. "When new crises emerge, like the Covid-19 pandemic, these children are especially vulnerable."Almost 33 million newly displaced people were recorded in 2019 - around 25 million due to natural disasters and 8.5 million due to conflict and violence, according to the report.UNICEF said the coronavirus pandemic is making a critical situation for displaced children and families even worse this year.The report, "Lost at Home", says children who are displaced lack access to basic services and are at risk of exposure to violence, exploitation and abuse. Among any group of human beings there always arises a bully. We’ve all experienced it since our days in grade school, even in kindergarten.My wife and I sometimes kept nursery and toddlers in church on Sunday mornings so that the younger parents could enjoy church service without the worry of riding herd on their little ones. I observed the same behavior among the very youngest. There was always one or two who bullied the others—took away toys or did other obnoxious things.These, of course, didn’t really think or know that they were doing anything wrong. It was just a natural, human trait.And that’s the problem. The natural thing amongst humans is the part of us that has brought forth the troubles throughout human history.The natural in this matter stems from the sin nature intrinsic to the fallen, human creation.“Progressing” up through junior high and beyond the bullying becomes more serious. It is done knowingly and with purpose. The purpose—to lord it over someone else for the bully’s own ego and sense of power and control.It becomes even more evident in the business world, as people joust and elbow to climb the ladders of success within corporate structures.Then we come to the arena of politics and government. We have witnessed this in a profound way within the last four years, in my opinion. We are seeing it even now, as far as I’m concerned, in the way the swamp-entrenched medical “experts” within Washington, DC, officialdom have caused the rest of us to completely give up our livelihoods and altered, perhaps permanently, the American way of life.These have bullied even this president, in my view. They walked into the Oval Office and extorted him with the threat of 2.2 million deaths from the coronavirus, if he didn’t shut down the nation’s close interaction.I admire Mr. Trump and believe him to be God’s man for the crucial hour so near the end of the age, as many who read our columns know. However, even such a self-confident, “Make America Great Again”president like Donald Trump is intimidated by the “experts” saying that 2.2 million Americans will likely die unless he follows their “expert” advice.Now, I sense he is realizing the mistake of listening to the veiled intimidation and is trying to finesse America’s way out of this national economic nightmare. The doctors still hold the intimidating authority, though. To me, it is obvious in the way these “authorities,” through using barely comprehensible medical jargon, step to the microphones and coyly contradict the president’s words about starting the nation back up.So the bullying continues even within this so-called pandemic.Bullying has been, of course, powerfully manifested by nations throughout history.The ancient rulers of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, Egypt, and all the rest literally beat their subjects and nations around them if those victims didn’t comply with the bully-rulers’ demands. This is seen in modern times by the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and even lesser tyrants like Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, Idi Amin and many, many others.To my way of observation, today’s most pronounced national bully is China. This monstrous dictatorship from the far reaches of the Orient has, through accident or deliberate perpetration, shown itself to be clearly the leading bully on the international block.China is now seen as the prime culprit in the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. They almost certainly, according to intelligence services from the UK and America, deliberately unleashed the disease after it, most likely, accidentally escaped biological laboratories near the Chinese city of Wuhan.It is thought that the dictator-leadership of China determined that since it escaped, they would keep the fact from other nations—particularly from the Western nations, so their economy wouldn’t be the only one to catastrophically suffer if and when the pandemic developed—as it did.Intelligence sources accuse Chinese President Xi Jinping of rounding up perhaps millions of coronavirus-infected Chinese people and having them murdered so that the disease wouldn’t appear to be so widespread in that country. This, of course, is the sort of thing that world-class dictators do.We remember the more than 30 million murdered in the Stalin purges and more than 60 million killed in the genocide by Mao tse-Tung in the so-called Cultural Revolution.So, the bullying by geopolitical tyrants continues—and in a big way. For the second time recently, American warships have sailed through the sensitive area known as the Taiwan Strait. This is an expanse of waters that separate the tiny island nation of Taiwan from mainland communist China.The communist regimes in the mainland have always considered Taiwan to belong to China. It is an illegitimate government that rules in Taiwan, the Chinese government continues to declare, because rebels (in their view) broke away from China and fled to Formosa (the name of Taiwan at the time). Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottleib, who's become a regular guest on CBS' Face the Nation, told host Margaret Brennan on Sunday that while coronavirus cases are no longer growing at an exponential rate in the United States, the country may have to prepare for "persistent spread," in which there are somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 new infections and 1,000 new deaths, per day.Gottleib didn't want to look beyond the end of June because it's too hard to predict (though he does expect a bit of reprieve later in the summer before potential flare-ups in the fall), but for now he doesn't seem optimistic that the decline will be as fast as the rise was in March. Lyndon Johnson decided to not run for president when the failure of the Vietnam War became undeniable. More Americans have died of COVID-19 in the last three months than perished in that war, which lasted most of two decades. And since life has decided to turn into science fiction, why shouldn’t we entertain the possibility that there is enough sense on the right to get rid of the one human being standing in the way of any hope of returning to normalcy soon? His own interests are the priorities-More than anything, we are where we are now because Trump prioritized his own interests above the well-being of the United States. The Eta Aquarids meteor shower peaks each year during early May as Earth passes through the debris trail from Halley's Comet (1P/Halley). The Orionids meteor shower in October also originates from this comet.The famous Halley's Comet is visible from Earth about every 76 years. It was last seen in 1986 and won't be visible again until 2061.Each year, when Earth collides with the comet's orbit, vaporizing debris comes flying into our atmosphere at a whopping 148,000 miles per hour, according to NASA, making the meteors well known for their speed. Sudan has criminalized the act of female genital mutilation, a historic move in a country where the United Nations says 9 out of 10 women between the ages of 15 to 49 have been subjected to the practice. But some activists warn the practice could be hard to eradicate in a country where it is so entrenched in the culture. Under the law that was passed earlier in April, any offenders will serve a punishable sentence of up to three years in prison according to The New York Times. According to the U.N. report, Sudan is one of the world's most-affected nations. The World Health Organization defines female genital mutilation (FGM) as involving "the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice has no health benefits for girls and women. FGM can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths."The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has welcomed the Sudanese government's decision, saying in a statement the government "affirmed its confidence in the competence of the Sudanese institutions, its ability and professionalism to protect women, respect them and to enhance their rights in general and in particular the health and social rights. Ted Chernecki reports.The yearly bills from overflowing rivers and rising seas in Canada could nearly triple by 2030 if Canada doesn’t do more to improve flood protection, a new analysis suggested Thursday.The Aqueduct Floods project of the Washington-based global think tank World Resources Institute found the number of people around the world affected by floods each year will more than double from about 65 million in 2010, to more than 132 million in 2030.The total annual damage to urban assets, including homes, businesses and public infrastructure, will exceed more than US$700 billion.Comparatively, flooding has cost the world a little more than US$1 trillion over the last three decades, the report said, meaning with no action, it will soon cost the world in less than two years what it cost over the last 30.While the report raises the most serious concerns for countries in Southeast Asia, including India, Pakistan and Indonesia, Canada will not be spared. The institute found in 2010, flood damage to urban areas, including homes, businesses and public infrastructure, totalled around US$2.4 billion. By 2030, if nothing more is done to prevent or mitigate flood damage, that price tag will be closer to US$6.6 billion.At the same time the number of Canadians directly impacted will grow from about 200,000 in 2010, to more than 350,000 in 2030. By 2050, the annual cost could exceed US$14 billion and affect 431,000 people.Coastal flooding in particular is going to get much worse. In 2010, fewer than 1,400 people were affected in Canada, and the urban cost was about US$122 million. Researchers in the US have issued a warning about the presence of so-called “murder hornets,” which can be lethal to humans and pose a high risk to the bee population, the New York Times reported Saturday.The Asian giant hornets are around 5 centimeters (two inches) long and have an orange and yellow head.According to the report, the insect “has a distinctive look, with a cartoonishly fierce face featuring teardrop eyes like Spider-Man, orange and black stripes that extend down its body like a tiger, and broad, wispy wings like a small dragonfly.”They use sharp fins to decapitate bees and take their bodies to feed to their young, and human victims of the sting described it as similar to “hot metal driving into their skin,” the report said.In Japan, the insects have been known to kill up to 50 people a year although they tend to attack only when disturbed.Scientists are now concerned that the hornets have invaded the US and could destroy the native bee population. Pope Francis, the Humility of Mary e the role of “Co-Redemptrix”-Robert Fastiggi-Pubblicato il-19 Aprile 2020-vatican insider

As is well known, Pope Francis has a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. One of the qualities of Mary that he repeatedly emphasizes is her humility. In his homily on Friday, April 3, 2020, the Holy Father spoke about Our Lady of Sorrows, and he noted the importance of meditating on the seven sorrows of Mary. In a special way, he pointed to Our Lady’s humility: «The Madonna never asked anything for herself, never. Yes, for others: we think of Cana when she goes to speak to Jesus. She never said: “I am the Mother, look at me: I will be the Queen Mother.” She never said it.  She doesn’t ask something of importance for herself in the apostolic college. She only accepts being Mother. She accompanied Jesus as a disciple because the Gospel shows that she followed Jesus: with friends, with pious women, she followed Jesus, she listened to Jesus».These words of Pope Francis harmonized providentially with the reflections of the Preacher of the Papal Household, Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap., who in his fourth and final Lenten Sermon— given also on April 3—applied the words of St. Paul in Phil 1:5–11 to the Virgin Mary: «Mary, though she was the Mother of God, did not count her privilege as something to hold on to, but emptied herself, calling herself a servant, and living in the likeness of all other women. She humbled herself and stayed hidden, obedient to God, till the death of her Son, and a death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted her and bestowed on her the name, which, after Jesus, is above every name, that at the name of Mary every head should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Mary is the Mother of the Lord to the glory of God the Father. Amen!»The humility of Mary is rooted in Scripture. In Mary’s great prayer, the Magnificat, she recognizes that   everything she possesses is a gift from God: “the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name”. In Canto 33 of the Paradiso, Dante speaks of Mary as “humble and more exalted than any creature.” The humble status of the Blessed Virgin as a creature is testified to by St. Louis de Montfort (1673–1716) who confesses “that Mary, being a mere creature fashioned by the hands of God is, compared to his infinite majesty,  less than an atom, or rather is simply nothing since He alone can say: ‘I am who am’” ( True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, 14).In his April 3 homily, Pope Francis also points out that that Mary never sought titles for herself. The most important title for the Blessed Virgin is “Mother,” which she received from Jesus himself: «To honor the Madonna is to say: “This is my Mother” because she is the Mother. And this is the title she received from Jesus, precisely there, in the moment of the Cross (cf. Jn 19:26–27). To your children you are Mother. He didn’t make her Prime Minister or give her titles of “functionality.” Only “Mother.” And then the Acts of the Apostles show us her in prayer with the Apostles as Mother».For Pope Francis, Mary, above all else, is “Mother.” She is the Mother of Jesus, the Incarnate Word, and the spiritual Mother of all the faithful. The Holy Father goes on to say that Mary never wished to take any title from her Son, who is the one Redeemer: «The Madonna did not wish to take any title from Jesus; she received the gift of being his Mother and the duty to accompany us as Mother, to be our Mother.  She did not ask for herself to be a quasi-redemptrix or a co-redemptrix: no. The Redeemer is only one and this title does not duplicate itself. She is only disciple and Mother. And thus, as Mother we must think of her, we must seek her, we must pray to her.  She is the Mother; in the Mother Church. In the maternity of the Madonna we see the maternity of the Church who receives all, the good and the bad: all».Pope Francis is absolutely correct. The Blessed Mother never asked to be a quasi-redemptrix or a co-redemptrix.  He’s also correct that in the strict, univocal sense the title Redeemer cannot be duplicated. Jesus is the divine Redeemer, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29). In an analogical sense, however, human beings can participate in the work of redemption by uniting their sufferings to that of Christ. This is why Pope Benedict XVI in speaking to the sick at Fatima on May 13, 2010 invited them to be “redeemers in the Redeemer.”  Jesus is the one Redeemer and also the one Mediator between God and the human race (1 Tim 2:5). Vatican II, however, teaches that “the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation, which is but a sharing in this one source” (Lumen gentium, 62). The title co-redemptrix when applied to Mary must never take anything away from Jesus the one divine Redeemer of the human race.  Jesus is the God-man, and Mary is a human creature. Mary’s role in the work of redemption must always be understood as secondary, subordinate, and totally dependent on her divine Son.  As St. Louis de Montfort explains, God “never had and does not now have any absolute need of the Blessed Virgin for the accomplishment of his will and the manifestation of his glory” (True Devotion, 14).  The saving work of Jesus was all-sufficient, but God willed Mary’s collaboration in the redemption in a unique and singular way.The title co-redemptrix, which has been used by theologians, saints, and mystics since the 15th century, must be understood as Mary’s unique collaboration with and under her divine Son, the Redeemer of the human race. The prefix, “co,” comes from the Latin cum (with) so the Blessed Virgin, as the co-redemptrix, collaborates in the work of redemption but only with Christ, the Redeemer, whose death on the Cross is the meritorious cause of our salvation (cf. Council of Trent, Denz.-H, 1529).r. Salvatore Maria Perrella, O.S.M., professor of dogmatics and Mariology at the Theological Faculty Marianum in Rome, points out that “the expression … co-redemptrix, is not wrong in itself but taken in isolation it could convey the idea of the necessity of Mary being the associate of the Redeemer” (Interview with Manuela Petrini, In Terris, August 15, 2019). Fr. Perrella is correct. As St. Louis de Montfort says, God has no absolute need of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary’s co-redemptive role, like her role as Mediatrix of grace, flows from the will of God, who willed to associate her in the work of redemption. The Blessed Virgin was “predestined from eternity to be the Mother of God by that decree of divine providence which determined the Incarnation of the Word” (Lumen gentium, 61).Pope John Paul II believed we can all be “co-redeemers of humanity” (Discourse of April 5, 1981). Mary’s co-redemptive role, however, is altogether unique. As the Mother of the Word Incarnate, she said yes on behalf of all human nature to be the Mother of the Redeemer (cf. St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 30, a. 1). She cared for the Savior as his Mother and accompanied Him all the way to Calvary, “where she stood, in keeping with the divine plan, grieving exceedingly with her only begotten Son, uniting herself with a maternal heart with His sacrifice, and lovingly consenting to the immolation of the Victim which she herself had brought forth” (Lumen gentium, 58). The great Mariologist, Fr. René Laurentin (1917–2017), notes that Mary “cooperated with the unique Redemption on a supreme level and with a unique intimacy” (Traité sur la Vierge Marie, edizione sixième Court traité sur la Vierge Marie, sixième edition - Paris: François-Xavier de Guibert, 2009).It was not until the 20th century that the Magisterium gave official approval to the title co-redemptrix. During the pontificate of Pius X, the Holy See three times gave approval to prayers invoking Mary as co-redemptrix;  Acta Apostolicae Sedis. Pius XI was the first pope to publicly use the title: once on November 30, 1933; again on March 23, 1934; and once again on April 28, 1935. John Paul II publicly used the title, Co-redemptrix, at least six times: General Audience, 10 December 1980; General Audience 8 September 1982; Angelus Address 4 November, 1984; Discourse at World Youth Day 31 March 1985; Address to the Sick 24 March, 1990; Discourse of 6 October, 1991. Moreover, in a homily in Guayaquil, Ecuador on January 31, 1985, John Paul II spoke of the “co-redemptive role of Mary (el papel corredentor de María), which can be translated as “the role of Mary as co-redemptrix”.These papal uses of co-redemptrix abide by the principle set forth by Pope Francis in his April 3, 2020 homily. They never take anything away from Jesus Christ, the one Redeemer and they don’t correspond to any title asked for by the Blessed Virgin herself.  They do, however, recognize like Fr. Laurentin that Mary’s cooperation with the work of redemption is “on a   supreme level and with a unique intimacy.” The Blessed Virgin cooperated with the work of redemption precisely as Mother, and she did so in perfect humility and obedience to the will of God.Pope Francis is correct to emphasize the humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It’s absolutely true that Mary never requested any titles or privileges for herself. She never asked to be called the Mother of God or the Queen of Heaven, but the Church honors her with these titles in her teaching and in her prayers. Such titles are found in the Litany of Loreto, which is connected to the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto, approved by Pope Francis in 2019 as an optional memorial for December 10 in the General Roman Calendar. The Church honors Mary with many titles out of love and devotion. These titles are also an expression of gratitude to God who humbled Himself to share our humanity by becoming incarnate of the Virgin Mary. Not only should we thank God for the gift of his Mother, but we should also thank Mary herself for saying yes and becoming the Mother of Christ, our Redeemer. In his April 3 homily, Pope Francis invites us all to pause to thank our Mother Mary: «Today we do well to pause a little and think of the suffering and the sorrows of the Madonna. She is our Mother. And how she brought herself there, how she brought good there, with strength, with weeping; it wasn’t a feigned weeping; it was really a heart destroyed with sorrow. We do well to pause a little and say to the Madonna: “Thank you for accepting to be Mother when the Angel announced it to you and thank you for accepting to be Mother when Jesus spoke it to you».
