Republican senators introduced a resolution on Tuesday calling for the
US to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.Texas Senator
Ted Cruz and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton drafted the motion, which
claims that Israel’s national security depends upon its permanent
control of the territory. Otherwise, the text says, Israel will be
vulnerable to attacks from Syria and Lebanon.“Israel’s northern border
is threatened by Iranian forces and their proxies in Lebanon and Syria,
including Hezbollah’s 150,000 rockets, armed drones, newly discovered
terror tunnels, and more,” said Senators Cruz and Cotton in a statement.

the verge of securing victory in Syria’s civil war. He may soon turn his

Monday to formalize the appointment of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhau
as permanent defense minister. The vote came a month after the prime
minister appointed himself to the role, from which Avigdor Liberman had
resigned citing Israel’s policy toward Gaza.Despite criticism of him
holding several key ministerial portfolios, Netanyahu asserted at the
time that Israel was in the midst of a military campaign, which he
claimed he was the only person capable of steering the country
through.As well as serving as prime minister, Netanyahu is currently
also the foreign minister, defense minister, health minister, and
immigration and absorption minister. While he has served as defense
minister since Liberman ended his tenure on November 18, Netanyahu has
thus far only been in the role as a temporary replacement, an
arrangement that can last no longer than three months and cannot be
extended.The permanent appointment passed in the Knesset by a majority
of 59 supporters to 56 opposed.Jewish Home party ministers Naftali
Bennett and Ayelet Shaked, who had earlier said they would abstain,

that he be named defense minister, threatening to leave the coalition
and topple the government, but ultimately retracted his

the prime minister at the weekly cabinet meeting, blaming him for the
uptick in attacks and the potential renewed outbreak of regular, serious

Sunday became the first Arab League leader to visit Syria since civil

relations and the latest developments in Syria and the region, according

Mandelblit announced Monday his official opposition to a bill that would
allow the forcible relocation of the families of Palestinian terrorists
from their homes, warning that the proposal could infringe on human
rights and spark international condemnation of Israel.As part of a
series of measures targeting Palestinian perpetrators of attacks, the
Ministerial Committee for Legislation voted Sunday to advance a bill by
Jewish Home MK Moti Yogev that would permit the IDF’s Central Command to
expel the relatives of Palestinian assailants from their hometowns to
other parts of the West Bank within a week of an attack or attempted
attack.The explanatory text accompanying the bill lauds Israel’s
deterrence as “the cornerstone of Israeli security and a way to save
lives and uphold law and order.”In a statement released following press
queries on whether Mandelblit had advised ministers not to vote to
advance the bill, the attorney general’s office said the measures in the
proposal “severely infringe upon the liberty and property of the family
members who are slated for deportation, due to the act of another
family member and without proof that [the family] also poses a
danger.”According to Mandelblit, the current law allows for Israel to
“assign a place of residence” to Palestinians citizens “only if there is
a specific threat from that person… and after examining the
proportionality” of expelling them from their home.“There is therefore a
constitutional impediment to advancing the proposed legislation,” the
statement said.“The proposal also raises significant challenges on the
international level,” it added, referring to potential blowback from

approved by ministers after a “lengthy and complicated” debate in the

chairman Naftali Bennett praised the decision of the Ministerial

participation in terror attacks has become a lucrative business, and

too concerned with the legalities of war to fight effectively. At a

West Bank and Jerusalem last week resulted in the deaths of two Israeli
soldiers and a baby boy as well as the injuries of several other
Israelis. The baby was prematurely delivered after his pregnant mother
was shot in one of the terror attacks.In the wake of the attacks and
amid manhunts for the suspects, Israeli security forces killed the
alleged gunman from October’s deadly terror attack in the Barkan
industrial zone and partially demolished his home, and killed the
Palestinian man believed to have been behind the shooting which led to
the baby’s death. They have also raided Ramallah several times and
demolished the home of a Palestinian accused of killing an Israeli
soldier in May.Last Wednesday, security forces shot dead the suspected
gunmen behind the baby’s death in a village near Ramallah after he tried
to attack them, according to the Shin Bet security service.Late
Thursday, security forces also shot dead the alleged gunman from the
Barkan attack after he opened fire on them, the Shin Bet said.Meanwhile,
settlers have lobbed rocks at Palestinians driving along Route 60, the
West Bank’s main thoroughfare, and in some cases, targeted homes in
Palestinian villages.In the meeting with Abbas at the Basman Palace in
Amman, Abdullah emphasized that the international community should
pressure Israel to halt its actions, the Petra report added.“His majesty
stressed the necessity that the international community bears its
responsibilities regarding the Israeli escalation and exert all forms of

had exerted pressure on Israel to stop “the dangerous escalation” in the

Israeli security officials on Monday to examine ways to lower tensions
in the West Bank, the Kan public broadcaster reported on the same day,
citing Palestinian sources.Sheikh told Palestine TV Palestinian and
Israeli officials had held a meeting Monday, without disclosing
names.“We sent a very clear message that the dangerous escalation
targeting the occupied lands is unacceptable for us and that we will not
stand by idly in the face of this dangerous escalation targeting our
cities, villages and refugee camps,” he said, adding that the “behavior”
of the IDF and settlers was “massacring” existing agreements between
Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization.During his meeting with

US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, on Tuesday called on
Israelis and Palestinians to back a US peace plan to be unveiled in
early 2019, saying it was far more “thoughtful” and creative than any
that have come before.Without revealing details of the plan, drawn up by
US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Haley said it was
far longer than past proposals and included elements that would have
previously been “unthinkable.”“Unlike previous attempts at addressing
this conflict, this plan is not just a few pages, containing unspecific
and unimaginative guidelines,” said Haley, who is due to leave her post
at the end of December.“It is much longer. It contains much more
thoughtful detail. It brings new elements to the discussion, taking
advantage of the new world of technology we now live in,” she told a
regular session of the Security Council on the Middle East.“It embraces
the reality that things can be done today that were previously
unthinkable,” she added. “It recognizes that realities on the ground in
the Middle East have changed, and changed in very powerful and important

different. There are things in the plan that every party will like, and

League on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on Australia and Brazil
to “abide by international law” concerning the status of Jerusalem.It
comes after Brazil’s president-elect Jair Bolsonaro announced in
November his intention to move his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel
Aviv to Jerusalem.And on Saturday Australia announced its recognition of
West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, although an embassy shift from Tel
Aviv will not occur until a peace settlement is achieved.The Arab League
decided Tuesday to dispatch a “high-ranking delegation” to Brazil and
Australia to inform officials there of the need to “abide by
international law” concerning Jerusalem.The decision was taken at an
extraordinary meeting at the League’s Cairo headquarters attended by
delegates from member countries.Israel won control Jerusalem’s eastern
half in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it, declaring the entire
city its “eternal and indivisible capital,” in a move not recognized by
most of the international community. Palestinians claim the eastern part
as the capital of a future Palestinian state.In December, the US
administration of President Donald Trump decided to move the American
embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and declared it recognized Israel’s
capital as Jerusalem.The embassy was transferred in May in a move that
