122 charged in child pornography investigations across Ontario last month-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
Police
services across Ontario charged 122 people with 551 charges related to
online child sexual abuse last month alone — a disturbing snapshot into a
crime the OPP says is seeing its victims get younger and abuse more
violent.The arrests represent just a fraction of a "multimillion-dollar
business" officials say has profited from the pain and abuse of more
than 2,000 children in the cases they've investigated over the past 12
years. The latest charges laid by the OPP and 26 other police agencies
were announced during a news conference in Vaughan, Ont., Wednesday. A
total of 55 victims were also identified during the past month of
investigations and referred to community support services. The youngest
victim was three years old."Sadly, we are seeing the children getting
younger, as well as the acts depicted more violent," said OPP Staff Sgt.
Sharon Hanlon, co-ordinator of the provincial strategy to protect
children from sexual abuse and exploitation on the internet.Police said
one purpose of their news conference was to convey the massive scope of
online sexual abuse of children in Ontario. To emphasize that scale, the
OPP highlighted statistics over the past 12 years from the Provincial
Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the
Internet.Since its launch in 2006, investigators have accomplished the
following:50,403 investigations of internet exploitation.5,686 persons
charges with 20,901 charges.2,009 child victims identified in Ontario
and around the world.People profit from the harm done to the most
vulnerable members of our society," said OPP Deputy Commissioner Rick
Barnum. "They profit from hurting children."The internet hosts websites
depicting "every type of child abuse imaginable," he added."Every image
of child sexual abuse represents a real victim. Every trading or
transmission of that image is a revictimization of that child."Insp.
Tina Chalk, from the OPP's counter exploitation and missing persons
section, said it's important for people to understand that images and
video depicting child porn are a reality in Ontario."Some of these
victims are so young they cannot report the crimes because they have not
uttered their first word. They cannot say no, they cannot tell anyone
and they cannot call the police," she said.Abusers are neighbours,
relatives, friends-Teachers, emergency personnel, members of the
military and family members were among those charged last month,
according to Hanlon."You need to know that these people are our
neighbours, relatives and friends. These are people we invite into our
worlds because we trust them.Hanlon described child pornography as a
borderless crime and said some of the November charges were made after
tips from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.Police tracked
the accused using online tools along with disclosures from children and
undercover work by "tenacious, hardworking, dogs-on-a-bone
investigators," she added.Just the tip of the iceberg-Last month, police
in Ontario identified 843 unique IP addresses for computers across the
province that accessed or made child pornography available."I think we
would all agree this is disturbing to say the least but I'm here today
to tell you that is the tip of the iceberg," said Hanlon, explaining
that number does not include people using technology to avoid detection,
luring children or creating child pornography "each and every day."
Miss America terminates agreements with NJ, NY and FL-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
ATLANTIC
CITY, N.J. — There they go. Miss America state groups in three more
states have had their licenses revoked by the Miss America Organization
following a bitter, high-stakes clash between state pageants and the
national leadership headed by former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson. The
Miss America Organization sent termination letters Friday to New Jersey,
New York and Florida. The Associated Press obtained two of the letters,
and confirmed with leaders of the third state that it, too, had been
revoked. So far, the parent organization has sent termination letters to
seven states, and leaders in an eighth state have resigned in
protest. The latest targets included the pageant's current and
traditional home — New Jersey, whose Boardwalk Hall hosts it each year
in Atlantic City — and the state that has produced four of the last six
Miss Americas (New York), including the current Miss America, Nia Imani
Franklin.Earlier this year, the Miss America Organization had moved
against Georgia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, while
Colorado's leaders quit. The letter to Florida cites "the State
Organization's default under the Agreement," but does not spell out what
the violations were. The letter to New Jersey states that its agreement
with the parent organization is not being renewed.States whose licenses
are terminated can request an appeal hearing within 10 days from Miss
America's executive committee. After an appeal is heard, the Miss
America Organization has the right to seek a new licensee. The Miss
America Organization declined to discuss the shakeup. "The revocations
are subject to a confidential appeal process and we are unable to
comment on the status of the licensees or their leadership," it said in a
statement. They would not say whether any of the targeted state
leadership groups has been replaced.Over the summer, dozens of state
organizations revolted against the national leadership of the pageant
headed by Carlson.State officials say their dissatisfaction stems not
from this year's elimination of swimsuits, but by the way Carlson and
CEO Regina Hopper have run the organization since taking over in
January. Their biggest change was dropping the swimsuit competition and
focusing more on the contestants' platforms and talents in an attempt to
make the pageant more relevant. But most state leadership groups chafed
under the new national leaders, and even the outgoing Miss America, Cara
Mund, released a remarkable letter in which she said she had been
marginalized and bullied by top pageant leaders. An independent
investigation commissioned by the Miss America Organization found no
evidence to back up that claim, but investigators did not interview Mund
for the report, which was issued on Sept. 10, the day after the 2018
pageant was held. Mund said she was too busy with her duties in the
waning days of her reign as Miss America to sit for an interview before
the pageant.___Follow Wayne Parry at

Global shares slip on doubts over US-China trade deal-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
BEIJING
— Global stock prices fell Wednesday, though not as much as Wall Street
the day before, amid confusion about what the U.S. and China agreed to
in a tariff cease-fire.KEEPING SCORE: In Europe, London's FTSE 100 index
fell 1.4 per cent to close at 6,921.84 and German's DAX lost 1.2 per
cent to 11,200.24. France's CAC 40 retreated 1.4 per cent to 4,944.37.
U.S. stock trading was closed to mourn the death of former President
George H.W. Bush.ASIA'S DAY: Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.6 per
cent to 26,819.58 and the Shanghai Composite Index declined 0.6 per cent
to 2,649.81. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 lost 0.5 per cent to 21,919.33 and
Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 shed 0.8 per cent to 5,668.40. Seoul's Kospi
gave up 0.8 per cent to 2,101.31 and India's Sensex was 0.6 per cent
lower at 35,902.74.TRADE QUESTIONS: Investor confidence in the
U.S.-China agreement faltered after confusing and conflicting comments
from President Donald Trump and some senior officials. That revived
fears the disagreement between the world's two biggest economies could
slow global growth. Trump previously said the agreement would lead to
sales of American farm goods and cuts in Chinese auto tariffs, but
Beijing has yet to confirm that. Trump renewed threats of tariff hikes
on Tuesday, saying on Twitter that Washington would have a "real deal"
with China or else would charge "major tariffs" on Chinese goods. That
cast further doubt on the weekend agreement.FED WATCH: Markets also got a
jolt from remarks by the president of the Fed's New York regional bank.
John Williams said that given his outlook for strong economic growth,
he expects "further gradual increases in interest rates will best
sponsor a sustained economic expansion." That seemed to counter Fed
Chairman Jay Powell's remarks last week. The jitters helped drive demand
for government bonds. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to
2.91 per cent from 2.99 per cent late Monday, a large move.ANALYST'S
TAKE: "Positive sentiment from the China-U.S. trade war truce dissipated
quickly," Eugene Leow and Radhika Rao of DBS Group said in a report.
"Questions on trade, worries about U.S. growth and perceived dovishness
on the Fed all play a part in explaining these market moves. Concerns
were also compounded by increasing news narrative on inverted curves and
risks of a recession."ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude fell 0.7 per cent to
settle at $52.89 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, used to price
international oils, declined 0.8 per cent to close at $61.56 per barrel
in London.Representatives of oil-producing nations will hold a highly
anticipated meeting Thursday in Vienna, with analysts predicting that
they will agree on a cut of at least 1 million barrels a day in an
effort to bolster prices.Russian President Vladimir Putin boosted
expectations for a deal when he said at the G20 summit over last weekend
that Russia and Saudi Arabia have agreed to extend an attempt by OPEC
to balance oil supply and demand, although he provided no figures.Crude
prices began falling in October and continued to plunge last month due
to oversupply and fears that weaker global economic growth would dampen
energy demand. In other energy futures trading Wednesday, wholesale
gasoline added 0.2 per cent to $1.45 a gallon. Heating oil slid 0.6 per
cent to $1.89 a gallon. Natural gas picked up 0.3 per cent to $4.47 per
1,000 cubic feet.CURRENCY: The dollar gained to 113.19 yen from
Wednesday's 112.82 yen. The euro held steady at $1.1342.METALS: Gold
fell 0.3 per cent to $1,242.60 an ounce. Silver slid 0.4 per cent to
$14.58 an ounce. Copper added 0.5 per cent to $2.77 a pound.Joe

London, Berlin condemn
Hezbollah tunnels, back Israeli border operation-Diplomats for European
nations say Lebanese terror group showing ‘blatant disregard’ for UN
resolutions in its ‘aggressive behavior’ along Israel’s northern
frontier-By TOI staff-DEC 6,18
British and German
diplomats on Wednesday backed Israel’s right to combat Hezbollah tunnels
dug beneath its northern border and strongly condemned the Lebanese
terror group for its actions.Alistair Burt, British Minister of State
for the Middle East, said Hezbollah actions were “a blatant disregard of
UN resolutions, threatening Israel and Lebanon’s stability.”Meanwhile
German Ambassador to Israel Susanne Wasum-Rainer said her government
“strongly condemns the aggressive behaviour of Hezbollah, as manifested
in the tunnel system built in violation of Israel’s territorial
integrity.”The statements joined those of US National Security Adviser
John Bolton who on Tuesday expressed “strong support” for Israel’s
“efforts to defend its sovereignty.”UK condemns Hizballah tunnels into
northern Israel. This is a blatant disregard of UN resolutions,
threatening Israel and Lebanon’s stability. UNSCR 1701 must be
implemented. UK supports Israel’s right to defend itself.— Alistair Burt
(@AlistairBurtUK) December 5, 2018-Russia on Wednesday expressed tacit
support on Wednesday for the efforts to expose Hezbollah’s cross-border
attack tunnels, while calling on both sides to show restraint lest the
volatile situation on the Lebanese border escalate. Russia does not
consider Hezbollah a terrorist organization. The Israeli army on Tuesday
launched Operation Northern Shield to find and destroy what Israel says
are cross-border tunnels planned for use by Hezbollah to attack the
country and perhaps launch a full-scale war.The German Government

in the tunnel system built in violation of Israel's territorial
integrity.— Susanne.Wasum-Rainer (@GerAmbTLV) December 5, 2018-On
Wednesday the military said it shared details about a tunnel which it
uncovered the day before with UN peacekeepers and Lebanese officials, as
Jerusalem pushed for fresh international sanctions against Hezbollah. At
a regularly scheduled meeting with peacekeepers and representatives
from the Lebanese Armed Forces, Israeli officers “presented the
uncovered Hezbollah attack tunnel that had been dug from Lebanon to
Israel,” a statement from the Israeli military said, without providing
details.“The IDF expressed its protest to the serious violation of
Israeli territory and UN Resolution 1701,” the statement said referring
to the 2006 UN Security Council resolution calling for Hezbollah to
withdraw from southern Lebanon following the Second Lebanon War, the
last major conflict between the IDF and the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror
group. The statement came after Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri,
a Hezbollah ally, said earlier that the Israeli army offered no
“coordinates or information” about the tunnels during the talks,
according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.Berri and others in Lebanon
have questioned the authenticity of the IDF’s claims about attack
tunnels leading into Israeli territory, while Hezbollah has remained
silent.Ali Bazzi, a lawmaker from Berri’s parliamentary bloc, said
Israel had no evidence to its claims, calling them a “distraction” and
an attempt by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “evade”
possible new indictment at home for corruption charges. However, Lebanese
Prime Minister Said Hariri said that his country was not seeking an
escalation.Lebanon does not want an escalation and is seeking to
maintain calm with “all international and friendly parties concerned,”
Hariri said in a statement from his office, without directly referring
to the tunnels .The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
said Wednesday it will send a team to Israel to “ascertain facts” and
called for full access to all locations along the border. According to
Israel’s Hadashot news, some UNIFIL personnel were shown the Israeli
side of the tunnel.Speaking to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by
phone, Netanyahu Wednesday urged international condemnation of Hezbollah
and more sanctions against the Iran-backed terror group, calling it a
“flagrant violation of Israeli sovereignty” and “an additional part of
Iran’s aggression in the region.”Netanyahu “said that he expects the UN
to strongly condemn the violation of Israel’s sovereignty,” a statement
from the Prime Minister’s Office read. “The prime minister also told the
UN secretary-general that the international community must join in the
demand to impose increased sanctions on Hezbollah in the wake of the
events.”There was no comment from Guterres’s office.Israel has long been
critical of what it describes as UNIFIL’s failure to rein in the
powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist group, which the IDF says
maintains a large arsenal in the area despite Resolution 1701.The US has
already imposed some sanctions on Hezbollah and its affiliates. Other
Western nations have made moves to impose sanctions and restrictions
against the organization, which is part of the Lebanese government,
though most measures differentiate between the group’s political and
armed wings.According to the IDF, the tunnel found Tuesday originated in
the Lebanese village of Kafr Kila, near the Israeli border, and was
approximately 200 meters (650 feet) long. It was dug some 25 meters (80
feet) below ground and was approximately two meters (six feet) tall by
two meters (six feet) wide, which would easily make it large enough for
heavily armed infantry to pass through it.The IDF said the tunnel, which
extended some 40 meters into Israel, was the “first of what are sure to
be many” attack tunnels dug by Hezbollah across the border discovered
as part of the newly launched operation. In addition to images from
inside the tunnel the IDF also provided footage, taken by an army robot
which surprised two Hezbollah operatives who were inside the passage at
the time.IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said Tuesday the
tunnel originated under an ostensibly civilian building, meters away
from a position controlled by UNIFIL, which is meant to ensure that
armed groups other than the Lebanese military stay away from the border
zone under UN Resolution 1701.Lebanese TV Wednesday aired footage of a
chicken coop that it said was the building where the tunnel allegedly
originated.IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkott said Tuesday that the army
“is in possession of” Hezbollah’s tunnel plan.Hadashot TV said Wednesday
that the IDF tackled the tunnel heading to Metulla first, because it
was being dug toward a residential area, while other tunnels are heading
to army positions. The military operation is expected to last several
weeks and is being led by the head of the IDF Northern Command Maj. Gen.
Yoel Strick, army officials have said. The army said the Hezbollah
tunnels are not yet operational and do not present an immediate threat
to Israelis.Judah Ari Gross and Raphel Ahren and agencies contributed to

ICC prosecutors report ‘significant’ progress
in Palestinian probe-Officials say they plan to complete ‘as early as
possible’ a preliminary investigation into allegations of crimes in West
Bank, Gaza-By AP and Raphael Ahren-TOI-6 December 2018
International
Criminal Court prosecutors intend to complete “as early as possible” a
long-running preliminary investigation into allegations of crimes in the
Palestinian territories, according to a report issued Wednesday. The
annual report by ICC prosecutors on progress in nine so-called
preliminary examinations underway at the court said that the Palestinian
territories probe “has advanced and significantly progressed” in its
analysis of whether legal conditions for opening a case have been
met. Those legal conditions include whether alleged crimes were serious
enough to be dealt with at the global tribunal and whether local
authorities are investigating and prosecuting the crimes. The ICC is a
court of last resort that only takes on cases when local courts cannot
or will not prosecute.ICC prosecutors have been conducting a preliminary
inquiry since 2015 in the Palestinian territories, including Israel’s
settlement policy, crimes allegedly committed by both sides in the 2014
Gaza conflict and Hamas rocket attacks aimed at Israeli civilians.Chief
Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has yet to rule on whether there is a basis to
investigate Palestinian claims of war crimes.Israel is not a member of
the court and doesn’t accept ICC jurisdiction. But Israeli forces could
face charges if they are suspected of committing crimes on Palestinian
territories. The court has accepted the “State of Palestine” as a
member.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon told The Times of
Israel on Wednesday that Jerusalem was studying the report.“As is
well-known, Israel is not a member state of the International Criminal
Court, and our clear position is that the court has no authority to deal
with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, among other things because the
Palestinian Authority is not a state,” he said. “We expect the
prosecutor to rule thusly at the end of her examination.”Israeli
Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit recently said he was drafting a
legal opinion that refutes the ICC’s legitimacy to discuss matters
pertaining to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because “there is no
Palestinian state.”In January 2015 Bensouda opened a preliminary
examination into the “situation in Palestine,” after the Palestinian
Authority signed the Rome Statute and formally accepted the court’s
jurisdiction over its territory. However, the legal validity of the move
remains a subject of contention.PA President Mahmoud Abbas has called on
the ICC to probe and prosecute Israeli officials over settlement
activity.Mandelblit has been cognizant of the ICC’s influence on issues
pertaining to the Palestinians, encouraging cabinet ministers last month
to delay the demolition of the West Bank Bedouin hamlet of Khan
al-Ahmar, saying a forced evacuation could compromise the Israeli
position vis-a-vis Palestinian claims at the Hague.Last Wednesday, the
Justice Ministry denied a report that the ICC had told Israel officials
there was no legal obstacle to razing the village, despite Bensouda
previously warning the demolition might be a war crime. The prosecutor’s
office currently has nine preliminary probes underway. Others focus on
Iraq, Colombia, Guinea, Nigeria, the Philippines, Ukraine, Venezuela and
Bangladesh. Prosecutors are also looking at alleged crimes committed by
Myanmar forces against Rohingya Muslims.Judges are expected to shortly
rule on a request by Bensouda, made more than a year ago, to open a
full-scale investigation into Afghanistan that also would cover alleged
crimes in CIA secret detention facilities in Europe.Jacob Magid and

Israel
fumes as Irish Senate advances bill outlawing settlement trade-Foreign
Ministry slams ‘most extreme anti-Israel piece of legislation in
Europe,’ though it still has to clear several hurdles to become law-By
Raphael Ahren-TOI-6 December 2018
The upper house of
Ireland’s parliament on Wednesday passed a bill to criminalize importing
or selling goods produced in Israeli towns in the West Bank, East
Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. After advancing through several debates,
the Control of Economic Activities (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 now
moves to the lower house, known as the Dáil Éireann, where it will have
to pass an additional five rounds of debates before the president would
sign it into law.“Incredible — the Occupied Territories Bill has just
passed all stages in Seanad Éireann! Ireland can be the first EU country
to end trade in illegal #SettlementGoods,” the sponsor of the bill,
Independent Senator Frances Black, tweeted minutes after the vote.“It
now goes to Dáil for agreement, & with such huge support we’ll make
this vital bill law!”Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon
replied by calling the measure hateful and unhelpful.“Truly incredible —
the Irish Senate just approved a hateful boycott initiative against a
friendly nation,” he tweeted at Black. “This will not help the
Palestinians and just push their leadership further away from
negotiations.”In a formal response to the vote, the Foreign Ministry
stated: “The Irish Senate (Seanad Éireann) have chosen to give their
backing to the most extreme anti-Israel piece of legislation in Europe.
This bill will not help a single Palestinian and is aimed at negating
the historical connection between the people of Israel and the
birthplace of the Jewish people.”The proposed legislation — a private
member bill — declares it an offense “for a person to import or attempt
to import settlement goods.”Likewise, those who “assist another person
to import or attempt to import settlement goods” would be committing a
crime punishable by up to five years in prison, if the bill were to
become law.“The bill seeks to prohibit the import and sale of goods,
services and natural resources originating in illegal settlements in
occupied territories,” Black said in a statement posted to her website
on June 25.“Such settlements are illegal under both international
humanitarian law and domestic Irish law, and result in human rights
violations on the ground. Despite this, Ireland provides continued
economic support through trade in settlement goods.”While the bill does
not mention Israel and the Palestinian territories, critics have charged
that it appears to have been written exclusively with the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict in mind.“This is a bill which selectively
uses international courts’ decisions to discriminate solely against
Israel and exclude all other cases of disputed territories,” the Foreign
Ministry charged Wednesday.“It is a dangerous piece of legislation as
it gives the Palestinians the illusion that external coercion can
actually replace negotiations. It encourages Palestinians to continue
supporting terrorism instead of engaging in direct negotiations.”If
passed into the law, the bill would be “counter-productive, as it seeks
to close doors for Israelis but will only succeed to close the door on
any future input that Ireland could have in a peace process in the
Middle East,” the statement continued-However, in private conversations,
Israeli officials appeared unperturbed by the legislation, estimating
that the government in Dublin will ultimately prevent it from coming
into force, even, if need be, blocking it technically from advancing. The
bill was supported by all opposition parties and independent senators,
but was opposed by Ireland’s minority government. The government argues
that banning trade with certain products is the exclusive prerogative of
the European Union.
Emails show Facebook used Israeli app
to monitor phones, mulled selling data-UK parliament media committee
releases cache of seized documents, finds social networking giant let
preferred companies obtain information about users-By AP and TOI staff-6
December 2018
LONDON — A UK Parliament committee accused
Facebook on Wednesday of cutting special deals with some advertisers to
give them more access to data as it released 250 pages worth of
documents on the tech giant’s internal discussions about the value of
users’ personal information.Included in the confidential emails released
by the Parliament’s media committee was information showing that
Facebook used an Israeli app it had acquired to monitor users’ iPhone
usage, using that information to identify competitors.Last month, the
committee seized confidential Facebook documents from the developer of a
now-defunct bikini photo searching app as part of its investigation
into fake news.In a summary of key issues pertaining to the documents,
the committee says Facebook “whitelisted” or gave preferential access to
certain companies, such as Airbnb and Netflix, even after the tech
giant announced changes in 2015 to end access to a user’s
“friends.”“Facebook have clearly entered into whitelisting agreements
with certain companies, which meant that after the platform changes in
2014/15 they maintained full access to friends data,” the committee said
in a statement preceding the emails. “It is not clear that there was
any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which companies
should be whitelisted or not.”The mails also showed Facebook gathered
data from phones using the Israeli-made virtual private network app
Onavo, which it purchased in 2010.By sending all internet use by apps on
users’ iPhones via Facebook’s servers the company was able to identify
popular apps, the UK Guardian newspaper reported. In 2013, such
information showed that messaging program WhatsApp was more popular than
Facebook’s Messenger app and a year later Facebook purchased
WhatsApp.The parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee
received the documents from app developer Six4Three, which had acquired
the files dating from 2013-2015, as part of a US lawsuit against the
social media giant. The app developer is suing Facebook over a change to
the social network’s privacy policies in 2015 that led Six4Three to
shut down its app, Pikinis, which let users find photos of their friends
in bathing suits by searching their friends list. The committee’s
seizure of the documents, which were under seal by a court in the United
States, came after the CEO of Six4Three, Theodore Kramer, was
threatened with arrest while on a business trip to London if he didn’t
hand over the material. The committee chair, Damian Collins, said the
documents are relevant to his ongoing investigation into whether social
media platforms were used to manipulate elections.“(The documents) raise
important questions about how Facebook treats users’ data, their
policies for working with app developers, and how they exercise their
dominant position in the social media market,” he said. “We don’t feel
we have had straight answers from Facebook on these important issues,
which is why we are releasing the documents.”The cache includes emails
from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other key members of his staff.
Collins said the emails raise important issues, particularly around the
use of the data of Facebook users.“The idea of linking access to
friends’ data to the financial value of the developers’ relationship
with Facebook is a recurring feature of the documents,” Collins said. The
summary said the documents also show Facebook knew that an update to
its Android mobile app phone system — which enabled the Facebook app to
collect user call logs — would be controversial.“To mitigate any bad PR,
Facebook planned to make it as hard as possible for users to know that
this was one of the underlying features of the upgrade of their app,”
the summary said.Facebook responded quickly, saying the release was
misleading without context and that the documents “are only part of the
story.”“We stand by the platform changes we made in 2015 to stop a
person from sharing their friends’ data with developers,” the company
said in a statement. “Like any business, we had many internal
conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable
business model for our platform. But the facts are clear: we’ve never
sold people’s data.”The documents suggest robust internal discussions
about linking data to revenue.“There’s a big question on where we get
the revenue from,” Zuckerberg said in one email. “Do we make it easy for
devs to use our payments/ad network but not require them? Do we require
them? Do we just charge a rev share directly and let devs who use them

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the
seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the
great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Residents head back into California town levelled by wildfire-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
PARADISE,
Calif. — Joyce and Jerry McLean sifted through twisted metal and broken
glass Wednesday on the property where their mobile home once stood,
hoping to find precious family possessions that might have survived the
devastating California wildfire that levelled Paradise. They were among
hundreds of residents who were finally allowed back into neighbourhoods
on the east side of town a month after the blaze killed at least 85
people and destroyed about 14,000 homes. The couple, wearing white hazmat
suits and leather gloves, searched for his gold wedding band, a Bible
that belonged to his great-grandmother and Christmas ornaments made by
their son when he was a boy."We didn't own expensive things, but we had a
lot of memory things," said Joyce McLean, 73. "If I can find a little
piece of his family or just a little piece of my son, I would be
happy."Earlier in the day, a long line of cars waited in a cold drizzle
at a checkpoint to enter areas where evacuation orders had been
lifted.Crews in yellow slickers were still clearing debris from burned
homes and removing trees from streets littered with melted plastic trash
cans and hollowed vehicles on tireless rims. Some residents have been
allowed back into nearby communities in the fire zone, but Wednesday
marked the first time residents of Paradise got a firsthand look at what
was left of their town of 27,000 people that was hit the hardest by the
blaze.More than 50,000 people in Paradise and the neighbouring
communities of Magalia and Concow were forced to quickly flee the
towering, wind-driven flames that charred 240 square miles (622 square
kilometres ). Authorities said 11 people were still unaccounted for in
what was the deadliest U.S. wildfire in at least a century.Joyce McLean
said she had seen photos on social media of her burned home and knew one
of the only things that survived was an American flag flying on a
pole."We lost everything but the clothes on our backs," she said about
their harrowing dash for safety. In their search Wednesday, they found
tools that belonged to Jerry McLean's father and a set of souvenir
spoons that belonged to Joyce McLean's mother, but there was no sign of
the precious items they had hoped to find."I don't think we're going to
find the Bible, not much chance," said Jerry McLean, 72.Joyce McLean
said the thought of returning after the fire had made her nervous and
emotional, but she wanted to at least recover the flag."I think
something was telling us to be there," she said about the images she saw
on social media. "The only thing that was standing was the flagpole,
with the flag still flying, and our welcome sign with our name and
address."Rebecca Rogers of Chico came to support her friend, Jennifer
Christensen, who lost her Paradise home in the fire.Rogers believes she
found the remains of Christensen's cat, Marble, under what used to be
her friend's bed. Rogers was in tears when she approached the McLeans to
ask for a bag to gather the remains."I don't want her to look. It's
just too much," Rogers sobbed before burying the remains in the front
yard of her friend's home. "I've got to be strong; I've got to do this
for her. "The communities will have very limited services for the
immediate future, and authorities urged returning residents to bring
food, water and fuel for vehicles. They were also warned they should not
move back into homes until ash and hazardous waste have been cleared,
and that rain could increase the risk of flash floods and mudslides. The
McLeans are temporarily renting a house in the region, but they plan to
move back to Paradise and have already bought a two-bedroom mobile home
to replace the one they lost. They also intend to keep searching the
rubble for their precious possessions."Today was just kind of a
come-to-Jesus meeting to see what's here, what's not, mostly not," Jerry
McLean said. Before leaving for the day, he took down the flag and
folded it."When we come back, she'll go up again," he said.___Rodriguez
reported from San Francisco.___This story has been corrected to show the
sheriff's office said the general public will be allowed to the areas
in now open in Paradise on Thursday, not that all evacuation orders will
be lifted Thursday.Don Thompson And Olga R. Rodriguez, The Associated

Airport flooded in Libya's Benghazi after heavy rain-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
BENGHAZI,
Libya (Reuters) - Heavy rain brought much of Libya's second city
Benghazi to a standstill on Wednesday, closing major roads and shutting
its airport, officials said.Water flooded the passenger terminal, rising
up to 1.5 meters (5 feet), the airport's deputy manager, Usama Ferjani,
said. Parts of the parking lot were also under water.Benghazi's Benina
airport had only been renovated and reopened in 2017 following a
three-year closure during which military forces were fighting
Islamists.Authorities in eastern Libya announced a two-day holiday as
most public workers were unable to reach their offices. The bad weather
also forced the closure of all Libyan oil export ports as high waves
made the docking of tankers impossible.(Reporting by Ayman Warfali;

Documents show Facebook used user data as competitive weapon-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
Internal
Facebook documents released by a U.K. parliamentary committee offer the
clearest evidence yet that the social network has used its enormous
trove of user data as a competitive weapon, often in ways designed to
keep its users in the dark.Parliament's media committee accused Facebook
on Wednesday of cutting special deals with some app developers to give
them more access to data, while icing out others that it viewed as
potential rivals. In other documents, company executives discussed how
they were keeping the company's collection and exploitation of user data
from its users. That included quietly collecting the call records and
text messages of users of phones that run on Google's Android operating
system without asking their permission. The U.K. committee released more
than 200 pages of documents on the tech giant's internal discussions
about the value of users' personal information. While they mostly cover
the period between 2012 and 2015 —the first three years after Facebook
went public — they offer a rare glimpse into the company's inner
workings and the extent to which it used people's data to make money
while publicly vowing to protect their privacy. The company's critics
said the new revelations reinforced their concerns over what users
actually know about how Facebook treats their data."These kinds of
schemes are exactly why companies must be required to disclose exactly
how they are collecting and sharing our data, with stiff penalties for
companies that lie about it," Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said
in a statement.Facebook called the documents misleading and said the
information they contain is "only part of the story.""Like any business,
we had many internal conversations about the various ways we could
build a sustainable business model for our platform," the company said
in a statement. "But the facts are clear: We've never sold people's
data."In a Facebook post , company CEO Mark Zuckerberg sought to put the
documents in context. "Of course, we don't let everyone develop on our
platform," he wrote. "We blocked a lot of sketchy apps. We also didn't
allow developers to use our platform to replicate our functionality or
grow their services virally in a way that creates little value for
people on Facebook."The U.K. committee seized the documents from app
developer Six4Three, maker of a now-defunct bikini-picture search app.
Six4Three acquired the files as part of a U.S. lawsuit that accuses
Facebook of deceptive, anti-competitive business practices. The
documents remain under court seal in the U.S.In a summary of key issues
pertaining to the documents, the committee said Facebook "whitelisted,"
or made exceptions for companies such as Airbnb and Netflix, that gave
them continued access to users' "friends" even after the tech giant
announced changes in 2015 to end the practice."Facebook have clearly
entered into whitelisting agreements with certain companies, which meant
that after the platform changes in 2014/15 they maintained full access
to friends data," the committee said in a statement. "It is not clear
that there was any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which
companies should be whitelisted or not."The documents "raise important
questions about how Facebook treats users' data, their policies for
working with app developers, and how they exercise their dominant
position in the social media market," said committee chair Damian
Collins. "We don't feel we have had straight answers from Facebook on
these important issues, which is why we are releasing the documents."The
cache includes emails from Zuckerberg and other key members of his
staff. The emails show Zuckerberg and other executives scheming to
leverage user data to favour companies not considered to be threats and
to identify potential acquisitions.Collins said the emails raise
important issues, particularly around the use of the data of Facebook
users. "The idea of linking access to friends' data to the financial
value of the developers' relationship with Facebook is a recurring
feature of the documents," Collins said. The committee's summary said
Facebook collected data about the mobile apps its users favoured to help
it decide which companies to acquire. It also said Facebook knew that
an update to its Android mobile app phone system — which allowed the
Facebook app to hoover up user call logs and text messages — would be
controversial."To mitigate any bad PR, Facebook planned to make it as
hard as possible for users to know that this was one of the underlying
features of the upgrade of their app," the summary said.In a post
Wednesday, Facebook continued to stand by its stance that the feature
was "is opt in for users and we ask for people's permission before
enabling."The Android data collection practice was unearthed in April as
the Cambridge Analytica scandal roiled Facebook. The data mining firm,
employed by the 2016 Trump campaign, exploited lax Facebook data-sharing
policies to obtain data on millions of users without their
consent.Facebook executives clearly understand the material is valuable.
An unsigned memo setting policy for a system upgrade known as "Platform
3.0" laid out a case for shutting out any app developer who could be
construed as a competitor."There are a small number of developers whom
no amount of sharing to FB or monetary value can justify giving them
access to Platform," the memo said. "These developers do not want to
participate in the ecosystem we have created, but rather build their own
ecosystem at the expense of our users, other developers and, of course,
us. That is something that we will not allow."The documents also
suggest Facebook would jealously safeguard its interests. In a January
2013 email exchange, Zuckerberg signed off on cutting access to
Twitter's Vine video-producing app, which had allowed users to find
their friends on Vine by pulling in data from Facebook."Unless anyone
raises objections," Facebook Vice-President Justin Osofsky wrote, the
company would cut Vine's access to users' friend networks. "We're
prepared reactive PR.""Yup, go for it," Zuckerberg replied. The documents
also suggest robust internal discussions about linking data to
revenue."There's a big question on where we get the revenue from,"
Zuckerberg said in one email. "Do we make it easy for (developers) to
use our payments/ad network but not require them? Do we require them? Do
we just charge a (revenue) share directly and let (developers) who use
them get a credit against what they owe us? It's not at all clear to me
here that we have a model that will actually make us the revenue we want
at scale."Danica Kirka, Frank Bajak And Barbara Ortutay, The Associated

Mexico suggests work visas for Central Americans, wants U.S. to do same-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-December 6, 2018
MEXICO
CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador proposed
on Wednesday offering more work visas for Central Americans and said
the United States should do the same, part of a negotiation aimed at
stemming the northward flow of migrants.Lopez Obrador, who took office
on Saturday, said he would discuss immigration with U.S. President
Donald Trump in coming days, including increasing investment in southern
Mexico and Central America."We are proposing investment in productive
projects and in job creation, and not only that, also work visas for
Mexico and for the United States," he told a news conference, saying he
would give more details "soon."Mexico and the United States have been in
talks about how to manage the large groups moving through Mexico in
caravans, with Lopez Obrador pushing for investment to address the
poverty and crime that drive thousands of people every year from
Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.Lopez Obrador, soon after being
elected in July, sent a letter to Trump suggesting they work together to
address the root causes of immigration."It is very important to us that
we reach an investment agreement between companies and governments, to
create jobs in Central America and our country," he said.Lopez Obrador
plans major infrastructure projects in the impoverished south of Mexico
including his home state of Tabasco. He says those plans, including a
refinery and two railways will provide jobs to Mexicans and Central
Americans. He did not reply when asked if his government was considering a
U.S. proposal to return Central American asylum seekers to Mexican
territory while U.S. courts processed their cases, saying only that
their rights would be respected. The arrival of several thousand Central
Americans in Mexico's border city of Tijuana about a month ago prompted
Trump to mobilize the U.S. Army to beef up border security, while
restricting the number of asylum applications accepted per day. While
overall illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border is much lower
than it was 20 years ago, there are more Central Americans, families and
asylum seekers than in the past. Some migrants clambered over a tall
fence to cross into the United States from Tijuana on Tuesday, hoping to
speed their asylum applications by turning themselves over to U.S.
