Egypt arrests son of deposed president
Morsi-Youngest son of jailed Islamist leader faces prosecution for
spreading ‘fake news’ amid crackdown against his father’s Muslim
Brotherhood movement-By AFP-TOI-OCT 11,18
CAIRO, Egypt — A
son of Egypt’s jailed former president Mohamed Morsi was arrested on
Wednesday morning for belonging to a banned group and spreading “fake
news,” judicial and security sources said.Abdullah Morsi, the youngest
son of the deposed Islamist president, was arrested at dawn and is set
to face prosecution, the sources said. His father became Egypt’s first
freely elected leader in 2012, but was overthrown by the military a year
later and imprisoned following major protests against his rule.In an
interview with the Associated Press news agency published earlier this
month, Abdullah complained that his family has only been allowed to
visit his father — who faces the death penalty — three times in five
years. He also said prison authorities had failed to provide the former
president with sufficient medical care for diabetes and high blood
pressure.President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s regime has led a crackdown
against Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, which it views as a
terrorist organization.Another son of the deposed president, Ossama
Morsi, was arrested in 2016 for “incitement to violence” and is in
prison.Rights groups frequently accuse Egypt of attempting to silence
critics by charging them with belonging to banned groups or
disseminating “fake news.”Authorities have denied allegations of human
rights abuses and say they are protecting the country’s security and
stability.Since Morsi’s ouster, jihadist attacks have killed hundreds of
police officers, soldiers and civilians.Security forces have killed
hundreds of jihadists since February, according to official sources, as
part of a sweeping military campaign in the Sinai Peninsula against
jihadist groups including the Islamic State.
Hamas leader
Hassan Yousef to be released from Israeli prison-Co-founder of terror
group has been held under administrative detention since he called for
uprising over Trump’s Jerusalem decision in late 2017-By Adam
Rasgon-TOI-11 October 2018
Hassan Yousef, a Hamas leader
in the West Bank, will be released from Israeli prison on Thursday, a
spokesman for the Prisons Service said Wednesday.Yousef, a co-founder of
the Hamas terror group and a Palestinian lawmaker, was arrested in
December 2017 for “advancing and promoting Hamas activities” in the West
Bank, according to the Shin Bet security service. For the past 10
months, he has been held under administrative detention, the Prisons
Service spokesman said. The measure allows Israel to hold certain
suspects indefinitely without charge. The spokesman said the order was
not being renewed and referred questions to the Shin Bet.The Shin Bet
did not immediately provide a reason for the decision to allow Yousef to
go free.Three days prior to his arrest in December, Yousef had called
for “escalating the Jerusalem uprising…to take down Trump’s decision,”
referring to US President Donald Trump’s changes to American policy on
Jerusalem. In early December 2017, Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s
capital and initiated a process to move the US embassy in Israel to the
city. The embassy was officially relocated in May.Yousef, in his 60s,
has spent almost a third of his life in Israeli prison, including the
vast majority of the past three years. In recent years, Yousef has been
one of the only Hamas members who has been willing to speak to Israeli
journalists on the record. Mosab Yousef, one of his sons, helped the
Shin Bet in the late 1990s and 2000s thwart several terror attacks and
arrest many Hamas members. He has since become estranged from his
father, sought asylum in the US and converted to Christianity. He
published an autobiography titled “Son of Hamas” in 2010.Hassan Yousef
is expected to return to his home in Beitunia on the outskirts of
Ramallah.
New York City creates gender-neutral 'X' option for birth certificates-[Reuters]-By Daniel Trotta-YAHOONEWS-October 11, 2018
NEW
YORK (Reuters) - People who were born in New York City and do not
identify as male or female can now opt for a third gender category of X
on their birth certificates.Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the provision
into a law on Tuesday, making New York City the fifth place to do so
after California, Oregon, Washington state and New Jersey. Three states
and Washington, D.C., also allow gender-neutral driver
licenses.Transgender advocates have been pressing governments to allow
identity documents to be more easily changed to match gender identity.
They say strict male and female categories are a form of discrimination
against transgender people that labels them against their will. The New
York City law allows nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people to change
their birth certificates from the M or F designation they were assigned
at birth to X with a personal affidavit. No document from a doctor is
required."This change may seem small but it is monumental," said Tanya
Asapansa-Johnson Walker, a transgender activist who took part in the
signing ceremony and spoke of the anxiety that goes with living with
gender-mismatched identification."Imagine having to out yourself over
and over and over again to strangers," Walker said. "Future generations
will not have to suffer."Among those participating in the ceremony was
actor Asia Kate Dillon, a nonbinary person who plays one on the cable
television series "Billions." Assigned female at birth, Dillon
identifies as neither male nor female and uses they, them and their as
pronouns.The gender-neutral birth certificate follows a 2014 law that
allowed transgender people in New York City to easily change the gender
on their birth certificates from male to female or vice versa by
removing the requirements of a legal name change and surgery. Now
non-binary people can choose the third option. The issue of what happens
when another state does not recognize the X designation has yet to be
tested in the courts. To change passport gender, the U.S. government
requires a physician to confirm the person has received clinical
treatment for gender transition. So far there are only male or female
designations on passports, but a U.S. District Court in Denver ruled in
September that the State Department cannot deny a gender-neutral
passport to an intersex person.De Blasio said the law afforded New
Yorkers the freedom to "tell the government who they are and not the
other way around.""Imagine if you were told you were something that you
did not consider yourself to be," de Blasio said.To transgender New
Yorkers, he said, "You be you. Live your truth. And know that New York
City will have your back."(Reporting by Daniel Trotta; editing by Lisa

Trump appointees hold keys in Supreme Court immigration case-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Lawrence Hurley-October 11, 2018
WASHINGTON
(Reuters) - The outcome of the latest immigration case involving
President Donald's Trump administration to come before the U.S. Supreme
Court could hinge on his two appointees, conservative Justices Neil
Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. The nine justices on Wednesday heard the
administration argue for sweeping government authority to detain
immigrants awaiting deportation after they complete sentences for
criminal convictions, even years after leaving prison. The
administration, which has taken a hard line toward immigration, has
appealed a lower court ruling in favor of immigrants that the government
has said undermines its ability to deport immigrants who have committed
crimes.Gorsuch, appointed by Trump last year, questioned the scope of
the government's power to detain people without hearings. In April,
Gorsuch joined with the court's four liberal justices in a 5-4 ruling in
another immigration case that could hinder the administration's ability
to step up the removal of immigrants with criminal records.Like some of
the other five conservatives on the court, Kavanaugh asked questions of
lawyers in the case that seemed more sympathetic to the
administration's stance. It was his second day on the bench after being
confirmed by the Senate on Saturday following a fierce confirmation
battle. There is the possibility of a compromise ruling. The plaintiffs
included two legal U.S. residents involved in separate lawsuits filed in
2013, a Cambodian immigrant named Mony Preap convicted of marijuana
possession and a Palestinian immigrant named Bassam Yusuf Khoury
convicted of attempting to manufacture a controlled substance.Under
federal immigration law, immigrants convicted of certain offenses are
subject to mandatory detention during their deportation process. They
can be held indefinitely without a bond hearing after completing their
sentences.Liberal Justice Stephen Breyer, expressing concern about the
practice, noted that providing hearings for those held in detention is a
long-established right "in a country which gives every triple ax
murderer a bail hearing."The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals ruled in 2016 that convicted immigrants who are not
immediately detained by immigration authorities after finishing their
sentences cannot later be placed into indefinite detention awaiting
possible deportation. The 9th Circuit decided that immigrants who were
later detained after completing their prison time - sometimes years
later - could seek bond hearings to argue for their release. In some ways
Wednesday's argument mirrored the split among the justices shown in a
5-3 February ruling, with the conservatives in the majority, that curbed
the ability of immigrants held in long-term detention during
deportation proceedings to argue for their release. That decision
overturned another 9th Circuit ruling.STICKING POINT-A majority of
justices, including Gorsuch, appeared concerned about immigrants being
detained without a hearing years after committing criminal offenses."Is
there any limit to the government's power?" Gorsuch asked. The sticking
point appeared to be how to define what would be a reasonable period of
time for immigration authorities to detain a person whose criminal
sentence is completed. The law at issue states that the government can
detain convicted immigrants "when the alien is released" from criminal
detention. Civil rights lawyers for two groups of plaintiffs argued that
the language of the law shows that it applies only immediately after
immigrants are released. The administration said the government should
have the power to detain such immigrants at any time.Cecilia Wang, an
American Civil Liberties Union lawyer representing the immigrants, said
that the detention should occur within 24 hours. Conservative Chief
Justice John Roberts questioned such a tight deadline."I don't know what
is reasonable in this situation. A month?" Roberts asked. In questioning
Wang, Kavanaugh said the ACLU's request for a time limit "raises a real
question for me whether we should be superimposing a time limit into
the statute when Congress, at least as I read it, did not itself do
so."But Kavanaugh later asked administration lawyer Zachary Tripp what a
reasonable amount of time would be if the court sided with the
immigrants. Tripp called any time limit "profoundly problematic."The
ACLU, which often argues cases before the justices, had urged the Senate
to reject Kavanaugh after he was accused by three women of sexual
misconduct. He denied the allegations.A ruling is due by the end of
June.(Reporting by Lawrence Hurley; Editing by Will Dunham)

Warm Gulf waters spawned Hurricane Michael's intensity: scientists-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Jon Herskovitz-October 10, 2018
(Reuters)
- When Hurricane Michael barreled into the Florida Panhandle on
Wednesday with 155-mph (249-kph) sustained winds, it defied forecasts
made just two days beforehand, its wind speeds doubling since Monday and
coming in just short of the highest category of intensity.Michael was
not the only tropical cyclone in recent years to undergo what scientists
refer to as "rapid intensification," defined as an acceleration of wind
speeds of at least 35 mph (56 kph) in 24 hours or less. The phenomenon
has become more serious as sea waters have warmed with climate
change."It is most likely that the very warm water in the Gulf ... is
likely contributing to the intensity and the intensification that we
have seen," said Jim Kossin, an atmospheric scientist with the U.S.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.Rapid intensification is
dangerous because it gives businesses, industry and people on the
ground less time to take appropriate precautions ahead of hurricanes
like Michael that hit shore with far more furious winds than originally
expected.Several factors can contribute, but warmer waters increase the
potential for a storm becoming stronger, climate scientists have
said.Climate change means that warmer ocean temperatures are being seen
more often, said Jennie Evans, a professor of Meteorology at
Pennsylvania State University."Since we've got warm temperatures in the
Gulf now, a hurricane has a much better chance to reach its maximum
possible intensity, which appears to be what Michael is doing,” she
said.In some cases, high-altitude winds can put a cap on a storm's
ability to draw power from moist sea air. But in Michael's case, that
brake was not in place.Rapid intensification happens about 5 percent of
the time and is difficult to predict. Last year, in the Atlantic basin,
forecasters correctly forecast six of 39 such instances, according to
Michael Brennan, branch chief of the hurricane specialist unit at the
U.S. National Hurricane Center. The NHC said last year it failed to
adequately predict the rapid intensification of Hurricane Matthew in
2016 to a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph (270
kph). Matthew was directly responsible for 585 deaths, including more
than 500 people in Haiti, the NHC said. While the science of tracking a
storm relies heavily on data about conditions on its periphery,
predicting intensity relies on measuring what is happening in the middle
of it.Typically, that means flying a hurricane hunter aircraft inside
the storm, recording wind speeds from a weather buoy as a storm passes
overhead or relying on satellites that may fly over once every other
day.Collecting consistent data through the storm is difficult and limits
the ability to predict intensity, hurricane experts have said.In recent
storms that have intensified quickly, the phenomenon has been more
exaggerated than in the past, according to a recent research paper
co-authored by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researcher Karthik
Balaguru.“At the end of the day, deep warm water, what we call ocean
heat content, that’s really the fuel supply for these storms," said J.
Marshall Shepherd, director of the atmospheric sciences program at the
University of Georgia.(Reporting by Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas;

Hurricane knocks out 42 percent of U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil output-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 11, 2018
HOUSTON
(Reuters) - Hurricane Michael on Wednesday cut 42 percent of U.S. Gulf
of Mexico daily crude oil production and nearly a third of natural gas
output, the largest reductions in a year, after companies evacuated
staff and shut-in platforms as a precaution.Michael slammed into the
Florida Panhandle on Wednesday as a fast-moving, Category 4 storm
bringing heavy rains and winds of 155 miles per hour (249 kph) to the
U.S. southeast.Companies turned off daily production of 718,877 barrels
of oil and 812 million cubic feet of natural gas by midday on Wednesday,
according to the federal offshore regulator, the Bureau of Safety and
Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).Despite the fall in output, U.S. crude
futures settled down more than 2 percent at $73.17 per barrel on
Wednesday, tracking the weaker U.S. stock market and reflecting the
declining importance of Gulf of Mexico output due to burgeoning growth
from onshore shale fields.Wednesday's cuts represent about 6.5 percent
of the nation's daily output of 11.1 million barrels of crude. It is the
most since Hurricane Nate a year ago curtailed more than 90 percent of
Gulf oil production.Total crude output lost in the last three days from
shut-ins amounted to 1.7 million barrels, according to BSEE data. It can
take several days after a storm passes to restaff and check equipment
before production can resume.Oil producers including Anadarko Petroleum
Corp , BHP Billiton , BP , Chevron Corp and Exxon Mobil Corp evacuated
workers from 89 Gulf production platforms before the storm entered the
Gulf.Kinder Morgan Inc , North America's second largest energy pipeline
operators, said its fuel and natural gas lines serving the Southeast
were unaffected. Construction at its Elba Island, Georgia, liquefied
natural gas (LNG) project will be suspended on Thursday and resume once
the storm passes.U.S. Gulf Coast oil refineries were not in the path of
the storm and continued to operate. The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port LLC,
the only port in the United States capable of fully loading and
unloading supertankers, halted operations at its marine terminal.A week
ago, drillers were pulling about 3.4 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd)
of natural gas from offshore Gulf of Mexico wells. On Tuesday, that was
down to just 2.2 bcfd, according to data from Refinitiv.Southern Co ,
the biggest power company in Georgia and Alabama, on Wednesday reduced
power in two units at the Farley nuclear power plant in Alabama as a
precautionary measure. The reduced operating level will allow personnel
to continue monitoring the storm's progress and if necessary shut the
1,751-megawatt Farley plant, which is about 90 miles (145 km) north of
the coast.More than 162,000 customers in Florida, Georgia and Alabama
were without power on Wednesday, according to local power companies, and
the outages were expected to rise as the storm moved farther
inland.(Reporting by Gary McWilliams, Scott DiSavino and Liz Hampton;

Belgium
holding Iranian diplomat over alleged bomb plot at opposition
rally-Assadollah Assadi extradited from Germany, questioned in Antwerp
over plans to attack Paris rally, reportedly foiled by Mossad-By AFP and
TOI staff-OCT 11,18
An Iranian diplomat was taken into
custody in Belgium on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in an
alleged plot to bomb an Iranian opposition rally in France. An
investigating magistrate earlier questioned the Iranian, normally based
in Vienna, in the northern Belgian city of Antwerp, the Federal
Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.Prosecutors said Tuesday that
the suspect, previously identified as Assadollah Assadi, had been
extradited to Belgium from Germany.Iran has denied French accusations
that one of its diplomats was involved in a plot targeting an annual
gathering of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) on June
30 just outside Paris.Belgian anti-terrorism prosecutors announced on
July 2 that they had foiled the plot. They then requested the
extradition of both Assadi and a man identified as Merhad A., who was
detained in Paris.Belgian police believe Merhad A. is an accomplice of a
husband and wife team caught in Brussels in possession of 500 grams
(about a pound) of the powerful explosive TATP and a detonator. All three
are Belgian nationals of Iranian origin. The suspected plan to target a
gathering of the NCRI organized by dissident group The People’s
Mujahedeen of Iran (MEK) in a Paris suburb came to light a few days
after the event.Hebrew media reported earlier this year that the plot
was thwarted by Israel’s Mossad spy agency.Six people were arrested in
Belgium, France, and Germany, two of whom were later released.German
prosecutors say Assadi, believed to be an intelligence agent, ordered a
couple to attack the rally and had handed them the explosives at a June
meeting in Luxembourg.Tehran has dismissed the alleged bomb plot as a
“sinister false flag ploy” designed to discredit Iran at a time when it
faces major diplomatic tensions with the United States. The rally in the
Paris suburb of Villepinte was attended by several allies of US
President Donald Trump, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani
and former House speaker Newt Gingrich, both of whom urged regime change
in Iran. The MEK, formed in the 1960s to overthrow the shah of Iran,
fought the rise of the mullahs in Tehran following the 1979 Islamic
revolution. It earned itself a listing as a “terrorist organization” by
the US State Department in 1997 and was only removed from terror
watchlists by the European Union in 2008 and by Washington in 2012.

demands answers from Saudi ally about missing journalist-Kushner and

Khashoggi-By Matthew Pennington-11 October 2018
WASHINGTON
(AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday the US is “demanding”
answers from Saudi Arabia about the disappearance of a well-known Saudi
writer and government critic Turkish authorities say was slain inside
his country’s diplomatic mission in Istanbul. The White House said a
short time later that national security adviser John Bolton and White
House senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke to Saudi Arabian Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman about Jamal Khashoggi.Press secretary Sarah Huckabee
Sanders said Bolton and Kushner spoke to Prince Mohammed on
Tuesday.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then had a follow-up call with
the crown prince to reiterate the US request for information.Trump said
he plans to invite to the White House the fiancée of Jamal Khashoggi, a
writer for The Washington Post who has not been seen since he entered
the Saudi consulate on October 2 to get paperwork for his
marriage.Members of Congress have grown increasingly insistent in recent
days that the Trump administration get to the bottom of the
disappearance.Khashoggi had apparently drawn the wrath of the Saudi
government, which has become an ever-closer US ally under Trump, now
leaving the US administration in a delicate position.Trump told
reporters in the Oval Office that he has a call in to Khashoggi’s
fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. He said nobody knows exactly what happened and
expressed hope that Khashoggi is not dead.Trump also said he had spoken
with the Saudis about what he called a “bad situation,” but he did not
disclose details of his conversations.Saudi Arabia has denied
involvement in Khashoggi’s disappearance.Angry US lawmakers likely won’t
cause the administration to turn away from Prince Mohammed. But they
could throw a wrench into arms sales that require their approval and
demand the US scale back support for the Saudi military campaign against
Iran-backed rebels in Yemen.Republican Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said “there will definitely be
consequences” if it turns out the Saudis were involved in Khashoggi
disappearance. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said it
would be “devastating” to the U.S.-Saudi relationship.Sen. Chris Murphy,
D-Conn, said if Saudi Arabia had lured a US resident into a consulate
and killed him, “it’s time for the United States to rethink our
military, political and economic relationship with Saudi Arabia.” But he
said it was unclear whether the Trump administration was willing to “go
beyond words.”Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a longtime critic of the Saudi
government, said he’ll try to force a vote in the Senate this week
blocking US arms sales to Saudi Arabia. He told local radio in his home
state Tuesday that he wants to end the arms shipments if there’s “any
indication” the Saudis are “implicated in killing this journalist that
was critical of them.”Trump’s comments Wednesday were the toughest yet
from his administration on the Khashoggi case. Officials have expressed
concern but refused even to entertain questions about what the
consequences would be if Turkish allegations turn out to be true. Pompeo
has called on the Saudi government to conduct a thorough investigation
and to be transparent about its results. The reaction from European
governments has also been cautious. British Foreign Secretary Jeremy
Hunt told his Saudi counterpart that if media reports about Khashoggi
were correct, it “would be extremely concerning and the U.K. will treat
the incident very seriously,” according to the Foreign Office. The Saudi
ambassador to Washington, Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, has
described the allegations as “malicious leaks and grim rumors” and said
the kingdom is “gravely concerned” about Khashoggi. Saudi officials
maintain he left the consulate shortly after entering, although it has
failed to provide evidence.Washington Post CEO and publisher Fred Ryan
said reports suggested the journalist was victim of “state-sponsored,
cold-blooded murder.” He demanded answers in a statement Tuesday, saying
“Silence, denials and delays are not acceptable.”Analysts said there
were reasons for skepticism about the Turkish account. Ties between
Ankara and Riyadh are at a low point over Turkey’s support for Qatar in
that country’s yearlong dispute with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf
nations. Saudi Arabia, a Sunni Muslim power, is also annoyed by Ankara’s
rapprochement with the kingdom’s Shiite archrival, Iran.Saudi
authorities’ failure to provide video footage of Khashoggi’s movements
at the consulate to rebut the Turkish allegations have only deepened
suspicions. The Trump administration, from the president on down, is
heavily invested in the Saudi relationship. That’s unlikely to change,
said Robin Wright, a scholar at the Wilson Center think tank and close
friend of the missing writer. The administration’s Middle East agenda
heavily depends on the Saudis, including efforts to counter Iranian
influence in the region, fight extremism and build support for an
expected plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.Indication
of those stakes came within four months of Trump taking office, when
Saudi Arabia became his first destination on a presidential trip and he
announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.Prince Mohammed has
introduced some economic and social reforms, allowing women to drive and
opening movie theaters in the deeply conservative Muslim nation. The
flip side, however, is that he’s also squelched dissent and imprisoned
activists. He has championed the three-year military campaign against
Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen that has pushed that nation toward
famine and caused many civilian deaths.Still, the Trump administration
last month stood behind its support for that campaign with weapons,
logistics and intelligence, certifying that the Saudis were taken
adequate steps to prevent civilian despite mounting evidence to the
contrary.Karen Elliott House, a veteran writer on Saudi affairs and
chair of the board of trustees at RAND Corp., said U.S. support for the
Yemen war is likely to be the focus of congressional criticism but won’t
endanger a relationship that has endured for decades, underpinned by
shared strategic interests. Even under the Obama administration, which
had difficult relations with Riyadh compared with Trump, there were some
$65 billion in completed arms sales.“The U.S.-Saudi relationship is
certainly not about shared moral values,” House said. “It’s about shared
security interests.”
Sharp increase in Israelis contacting
rape crisis centers after #WhyIDidntReport-Data shows more than 50%
surge — 100% among men — in calls, after social media campaign sparked
by Trump’s criticism of Christine Blasey Ford-By Michael Bachner-TOI-11
October 2018
The number of Israelis contacting sexual
violence hotlines has dramatically increased following a recent campaign
that saw social media users around the world detail why they didn’t
complain immediately after they were assaulted.According to figures
released Wednesday by The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel
(ARCCI) and carried by Hebrew-language media, there has been an increase
of more than 50 percent since the #WhyIDidntReport campaign began on
September 21.The increase was even more pronounced among men, with the
number of calls more than doubling compared to the average rate. The
campaign began when US President Donald Trump demanded to know why the
sexual assault accuser of his then-nominee for the Supreme Court did not
come forward sooner, seeking to cast doubt over her claims. But
thousands of women immediately flooded the internet to tell the stories
of trauma, under a viral hashtag: #WhyIDidntReport.Because I was 18-I
was scared-I didn’t think I’d be believed-I didn’t know where to go-I
knew my assailant-I couldn’t break my parents’ hearts-I didn’t want to
be defined by someone else’s violent criminal act#WhyIDidntReport—
Gretchen Whitmer (@gretchenwhitmer) September 22, 2018-That campaign
gained traction in Israel, too, under an equivalent Hebrew handle
meaning “I didn’t complain.”Many women who contacted the Israeli
hotlines said they were triggered by the sudden emergence of public
testimonies of sexual violence that reminded them of their own
stories.ARCCI executive director Orit Sulitzeanu said in the statement
that the phenomenon was normal and common, adding that “in such moments,
the statistics which are all-too familiar to us can be attached to
faces.”“But it is important to remember that many carry the wounds with
them all the time, even when the subject isn’t making headlines, and it
is our duty as a society to grant them relief and recognition,” she
added.“Our help centers are available to victims at any time, and we
invite anyone wanting to talk or weighing their next steps to contact us
— the hotline numbers are 1202 for women and 1203 for men.”The ARCCI
also reported that the profiles of men contacting has become more
diverse, with older men calling about incidents that happened in their
past. There was a 140% increase in the number of people who reached out
for help via an online chat service operated by the organization and
used primarily by people aged 17-30, the statement said-Last month,
after days of relative restraint following Christine Blasey Ford’s
public US Senate testimony against Supreme Court nominee Brett
Kavanaugh, Trump — himself the subject of groping and other sexual
harassment allegations by multiple women — launched an all-out attack on
Ford’s credibility.“I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was
as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed,” he
tweeted on September 21.I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford
was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with
local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I
ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date,
time, and place!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21,
2018-But the president’s skepticism unleashed a fresh wave of social
media outrage, echoing that of last year’s #MeToo movement.A phrase of
solidarity through empathy first used by activist Tarana Burke in 2006,
#MeToo spread virally as a hashtag when a flood of allegations against
Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein forced a global reckoning on
sexual misconduct in the workplace and beyond. This time, it was
solidarity through attempted education, as sexual assault survivors
furiously hit back at Trump and Ford’s other detractors with the reasons
why they, like Ford, kept their trauma to themselves for so long.Trump
said Saturday he was “100 %” certain Kavanaugh was innocent.Within the
#WhyIDidntReport tweets, themes jumped out: fears of not being believed,
or of repercussions for speaking out; feelings of shame or
embarrassment. And for all the stories shared, there were no doubt
countless others still left untold.AFP contributed to this report.
