When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire panic ultimately rested – were systematically “adjusted” to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified.Two weeks ago, under the headline “How we are being tricked by flawed data on global warming”, I wrote about Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. In each instance, the actual trend of 60 years of data had been dramatically reversed, so that a cooling trend was changed to one that showed a marked warming.This was only the latest of many examples of a practice long recognised by expert observers around the world – one that raises an ever larger question mark over the entire official surface-temperature record.Following my last article, Homewood checked a swathe of other South American weather stations around the original three. In each case he found the same suspicious one-way “adjustments”. First these were made by the US government’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). They were then amplified by two of the main official surface records, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (Giss) and the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), which use the warming trends to estimate temperatures across the vast regions of the Earth where no measurements are taken. Yet these are the very records on which scientists and politicians rely for their belief in “global warming”.
Homewood has now turned his attention to the weather stations across much of the Arctic, between Canada (51 degrees W) and the heart of Siberia (87 degrees E). Again, in nearly every case, the same one-way adjustments have been made, to show warming up to 1 degree C or more higher than was indicated by the data that was actually recorded. This has surprised no one more than Traust Jonsson, who was long in charge of climate research for the Iceland met office (and with whom Homewood has been in touch). Jonsson was amazed to see how the new version completely “disappears” Iceland’s “sea ice years” around 1970, when a period of extreme cooling almost devastated his country’s economy.One of the first examples of these “adjustments” was exposed in 2007 by the statistician Steve McIntyre, when he discovered a paper published in 1987 by James Hansen, the scientist (later turned fanatical climate activist) who for many years ran Giss. Hansen’s original graph showed temperatures in the Arctic as having been much higher around 1940 than at any time since. But as Homewood reveals in his blog post, “Temperature adjustments transform Arctic history”, Giss has turned this upside down. Arctic temperatures from that time have been lowered so much that that they are now dwarfed by those of the past 20 years.Homewood’s interest in the Arctic is partly because the “vanishing” of its polar ice (and the polar bears) has become such a poster-child for those trying to persuade us that we are threatened by runaway warming. But he chose that particular stretch of the Arctic because it is where ice is affected by warmer water brought in by cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current – this last peaked at just the time 75 years ago when Arctic ice retreated even further than it has done recently. The ice-melt is not caused by rising global temperatures at all.Of much more serious significance, however, is the way this wholesale manipulation of the official temperature record – for reasons GHCN and Giss have never plausibly explained – has become the real elephant in the room of the greatest and most costly scare the world has known. This really does begin to look like one of the greatest scientific scandals of all time.

What’s so extraordinary about the manipulations to the global land-based temperature sets is that they affect every one of us, wherever we live.Whether you’re an elderly couple in mid-Wales who have just had 20 per cent knocked off the value of your retirement cottage by the new wind farm on the hill opposite, or you’re a tribesman in the South East Asian jungle whose virgin forest home has been trashed to make way for a palm oil plantation to grow eco-friendly biofuels, or you’re a scientist in New Zealand who has been hounded out of your job because your research doesn’t fit the “global warming” narrative, or you’re a science teacher in Ohio who is obliged, whether you like it or not, to lecture your charges on the dread perils of climate change, or you’re a Republican senatorial candidate who has been targeted as a “denier” in a green attack dog campaign financed by Tom Steyer, you’re all victims of the same global scam: a scam perpetrated by a tiny handful of individuals whose junk statistical manipulation of the global climate records have transformed routine weather patterns into the world’s biggest and most influential ever science scare story.Here, in the letters pages of today’s Telegraph, is yet another example of what I mean. It’s a letter protesting against the devastation of the Scottish landscape by bird-slicing, bat-chomping eco-crucifixes and it’s signed by the director of the Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland, the president of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, the president of the Munro Society, the chairman of National Trust for Scotland, the convener of Ramblers Scotland, and the co-ordinator of Scottish Wild Land.

It begins: “Few dispute the necessity of reducing our energy use and pursuing renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuels, in order to help address climate change…”They feel, for understandable reasons, that they are obliged to preface their complaint with the usual obeisance to the Great Green Climate Change Emperor. But what if that Great Green Climate Change Emperor is wearing no clothes?

What then?

Just to recap, here is what we now know about the world’s land-based temperature records. The raw weather station data appears to show in many cases that the 1930s was the warmest decade in the last 100 years (not, as activists like James Hansen have insisted, the period since the late 1990s). Yet this data has now been “adjusted” – so far without any convincing explanation – in order to make the 1930s look cooler than they were and recent periods warmer. The net effect of this has been to make Twentieth century warming look much more dramatic and extreme than it may actually have been – generating concomitant panic among the scientific establishment which has been using this “adjusted” data as the basis for its narrative that we are currently experiencing a dangerous and unprecedented phenomenon sometimes known (though they keep changing the name) as Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming.A common defence used by alarmist “experts” to shore up this shaky theory is that lots of different scientific institutions have reached the same conclusion independently of one another.But here’s the rub: they are not independent. They are all in cahoots because they are all pushing the same narrative, as Booker explains using the example of the “suspicious” one-way adjustments to the weather stations in Paraguay. It also raises the question – and I speak here, of course, metaphorically rather than literally: when are heads going to roll?

JAKARTA: The body of the only Malaysian passenger, Sii Chung Huei, in the AirAsia QZ8501 crash in the Java Sea last Dec 28, was identified by Indonesian authorities today.Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim said the body was found a few days ago but was only confirmed today as that of Sii today after the DNA testing was done.The body had been sent to Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya after it was found by the Indonesian search team."The embassy here will arrange for Sii's remains to be handed over to his family members tomorrow in Surabaya before the remains will be flown back to Sarawak on a Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft on Wednesday," Zahrain said when contacted, here, Monday.Zahrain said he himself would meet with Sii's family members who had long been waiting in Surabaya and an embassy officer would be accompanying Sii's remains on the flight to Sarawak.Sii, 56, a businessman from Kuching but based in Jakarta was on the ill-fated aircraft en route to Singapore from Surabaya on Dec 28, last year when it crashed.There were 162 people on board but so far, 100 bodies have been found by the search authorities who also found the plane's black box two weeks ago.The search operation by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Body (Basarnas) is still on.

According to Ukrainian news site TSN.ua, right-wing politician Dmitry Yarosh said the blast killed about “200 terrorists,” destroyed 20 Grad rockets, and trucks filled with ammunition. “There was a mushroom cloud over Donetsk,” one of the rebels told Ukrainian news website ZN.ua, adding that “dozens of homes were left without windows.” Ukraine-based Euromaidan PR, a citizen-journalist news website, posted several Twitter updates about the explosion, also saying the Ukrainian army launched the attack on a rebel-held site. BEIRUT: The United States delivered more than US$25 million worth of military aid including heavy artillery to the Lebanese army on Sunday (Feb 8) to help it fight militant groups which have repeatedly battled with security forces near the Syrian border.The US ambassador to Beirut, David Hale, said in a statement the weapons would be used to "defeat the terrorist and extremist threat from Syria". "We are fighting the same enemy, so our support for you has been swift and continuous," Hale said at an event marking the delivery of the weapons in Beirut.The Lebanese army has fought regular battles with armed groups including militants linked to Islamic State group and the al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front in areas near the Syrian border, most recently late last month when six soldiers were killed.Hale said Lebanon was the fifth biggest recipient of US military aid. It received more than US$100 million last year. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif Sunday appeared to rule out any new extension to tough negotiations with world powers over his country's suspect nuclear program, as he met top US diplomat John Kerry for new talks, AFP reports."I do not think another extension is in the interest of anyone, as I do not believe this extension was either necessary or useful," Zarif told a global security conference, meeting in the southern German city of Munich."In my view extension is not useful, not conducive to an agreement, and all my energy and focus and that of my colleagues and I'm sure my negotiating partners .... are all focused on reaching an agreement as early as possible."Kerry and Zarif held a second round of talks here Sunday, meeting for about 90 minutes as they try to hammer out a political accord to rein in Iran's atomic ambitions ahead of a March 31 deadline. Kerry was due to fly back to Washington later in the day.Few details of the tough negotiations have leaked, but world powers are trying to ensure that Iran's pathways to developing a nuclear weapon are cut, in return for a gradual easing of international sanctions which have crippled Iran's economy.Zarif refused to publicly discuss the details of the negotiations for an accord, but said "we are engaged in a very serious discussion.""We believe it is in our interest to show the world that our program is exclusively peaceful."But he also said: "I don't think if we don't have an agreement it will be the end of the world. Israel again warns against deal

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared on Sunday that he will not form a government with the left.In a post on his Facebook page, Netanyahu said that the Jewish Home will be a part of his next coalition and called on the public to ensure that the Likud gets enough seats in order to prevent a leftist government.“I have made clear that I will not form a government with the left-wing parties. There is a huge ideological void between the Likud and Buji, Tzipi and the Labor party’s list of anti-Zionist members,” he said.“I’ve also announced that the Jewish Home is our natural partner and will be a part of the government I will head, a strong and broad Likud government.”“But,” Netanyahu continued, “if the Likud will not be big enough - there is no certainty that the formation of the government will be assigned to me. If the Likud will not be big enough, a leftist government may be established. The choice this time is a big Likud or a left-wing government.”The comments come hours after Hatnua Chairwoman Tzipi Livni dismissed the possibility of a unity government with Likud and Netanyahu."I will not be a partner in Netanyahu's government. I will not join a path that is not our path," the former Justice Minister, who did sit with Netanyahu as Hatnua Chairwoman in the 19th Knesset, said."I will not be a partner to a path that is our path, and I am not a partner to Netanyahu's path, or the path shared by Netanyahu, [Jewish Home Chairman Naftali] Bennett and [Yisrael Beytenu Chairman Avigdor] Liberman," she added.A poll conducted by TNS for Channel One and released on Saturday shows the Likud party at 27 seats, easily surpassing rival Labor-Hatnua at 23.
