YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Suspected Boko Haram Islamist fighters from Nigeria kidnapped around 80 people, many of them children, and killed three others on Sunday in a cross-border attack on villages in northern Cameroon, army and government officials said.The group, which has killed thousands and kidnapped hundreds in its bid to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has also targeted Cameroon and Niger over the past year as it seeks to expand its zone of operations.Sunday's kidnappings, among the largest abductions on Cameroonian soil, came as neighbouring Chad deployed troops to support Cameroon's forces in the area."According to our initial information, around 30 adults, most of them herders, and 50 young girls and boys aged between 10 and 15 years were abducted," a senior army officer deployed to northern Cameroon told Reuters.He said the early-morning attack had targeted the village of Mabass and other villages along the porous border. KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian troops recaptured almost all the territory of Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine they had lost to separatists in recent weeks, as thousands gathered in Kiev for a state-sponsored peace march on Sunday.The offensive brought fighting close to the industrial city of Donetsk, centre of a pro-Russian rebellion, while shelling intensified in other parts of the region known as "Donbass".With attempts to restart peace talks stalled, pro-Russian rebels have stepped up attacks in the past week and casualties have mounted, including 13 civilians killed in an attack on a passenger bus, which Kiev blamed on the separatists.Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said the army's operation had returned battle lines near the airport to the previous status quo and thus not violated the 12-point peace plan agreed with Russia and separatist leaders last September in Minsk."We succeeded in almost completely cleansing the territory of the airport, which belongs to the territory of Ukrainian forces as marked by military separation lines," he said.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was concerned by what he called an escalation by Ukrainian forces that did not contribute to peace efforts.He later said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had rejected a peace plan contained in a letter Russian President Vladimir Putin sent him on Thursday."In recent days, Russia has consistently undertaken efforts as an intermediary in regulating the conflict," Peskov said, according to the ITAR TASS news agency.It said Putin's letter included a concrete plan for both sides to withdraw heavy artillery.Russian television channel NTV published the letter on Sunday evening. Elsewhere in the region, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said two brothers aged 7 and 16 had been killed and their 8-year-old sister injured when a shell struck a house in the government-controlled town of Vuhlehirsk, 60 km (40 miles) from Donetsk.Spokesman Vyacheslav Abroskin said the shelling had come from the direction of Yenakiieve, controlled by the rebels.Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko addressed several thousand people in Kiev late Sunday at a peace march in memory of those killed on the passenger bus."We will not give away one scrap of Ukrainian land. We will get back the Donbass ... and show that a very important aspect of our victory is our unity," he said.Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko blamed the shelling around Donetsk on the Ukrainian army. "We're talking about Kiev trying to unleash war again," Interfax quoted him as saying.A ceasefire agreed in Minsk in early September has been regularly violated since the start by both sides, and fighting has flared up again since plans for peace talks last week were abandoned.

Rain poured down on the millions of faithful that gathered in Rizal Park in Manila to attend the mass celebrated by Francis on the final day of his visit to the Philippines. An enormous crowd of faithful followed him through the streets of the city, braving the bad weather. According to Manila’s authorities, there were between 6 and 7 million faithful present at the mass, an absolute record for a papal gathering, the director of the Holy See Office Fr. Federico Lombardi report.Today marks the feast of the Santo Niño (Holy Child), which is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of January. Thousands of Santo Niño figurines donning festive garments were raised in the air as Francis passed by. During the mass, invocations were made in various local languages: Ilocano, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Waray and Hiligaynon. A blind woman read out the first reading using brail. In the homily read out in English, the Pope said: “Throughout my visit, I have listened to you sing the song: “We are all God’s children”. That is what the Santo Niño tells us. He reminds us of our deepest identity. All of us are God’s children, members of God’s family. Today Saint Paul has told us that in Christ we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ. This is who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful expression of this when Filipinos rallied around our brothers and sisters affected by the typhoon.”God “created the world as a beautiful garden and asked us to care for it. But through sin, man has disfigured that natural beauty; through sin, man has also destroyed the unity and beauty of our human family, creating social structures which perpetuate poverty, ignorance and corruption.”
“Sometimes, when we see the troubles, difficulties and wrongs all around us, we are tempted to give up. It seems that the promises of the Gospel do not apply; they are unreal. But the Bible tells us that the great threat to God’s plan for us is, and always has been, the lie. The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of sophistication, the allure of being “modern”, “like everyone else”. He distracts us with the promise of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes. And so we squander our God-given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really matter. We forget to remain, at heart, children of God. That is sin: [to] forget at heart that we are children of God.” Looking again at the Santo Niño, the Pope said: “he reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, and those larger families which are the Church, God’s family, and the world, our human family. Sadly, in our day, the family all too often needs to be protected against insidious attacks and programs contrary to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture.” Francis went on to say that “we too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage. Specifically, we need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected.” Finally, the Pope said that Filipinos are called to be “outstanding missionaries of the faith in Asia”.Cardinal Luis Tagle gave a final address in which he greeted Francis on behalf of the poor, the marginalised, the orphans, the widows, the homeless, the abandoned, the sick, the victims of discrimination, violence and abuse and the survivors of natural disasters, assuring the Pope, who returns to Rome tomorrow, that all Filipinos would be praying for him. “Every Filipino wants to go with you, not to Rome, don’t worry, but to the peripheries. We want to go with you to the prison cells, to hospitals, to the world of politics, finance, arts, sciences and social communications. We will go to these worlds to bring the light of Jesus.”

in manila-There are no ready-made answers to the question which 12-year-old Glyzelle Palomar asked the Pope: “There are so many children who are abandoned by their own parents, there are many who fall victim to drugs and prostitution and many terrible things happen to them. Why does God allow these things to happen even to innocent children? And why are there such few people helping us?” Francis felt moved when the girl broke down in tears as she pronounced these words in the presence of more than 30,000 young people at Santo Tomás University in Manila. The Pope had just finished hearing another touching testimony by Jun Chura a former street child who now works for the Tulan ng Kabataan foundation that is looking after Glyzelle. Francis embraced both of them and placed his hand on the girl’s head for a long while.“Today I heard the only question that has no answer,” Francis said speaking off the cuff in Spanish. “Words could not express her feelings, she needed to cry. There is no answer to the real essence of your question: only when we are able to cry about the things you have said will we come close to answering this question, why do children suffer?”“When the heart is able to ask itself and weep, then we can understand something. There is a worldly compassion which is useless. You expressed something like this. It’s a compassion that makes us put our hands in our pockets and give something to the poor. But if Christ had had that kind of compassion he would have greeted a couple of people, given them something, and walked on. But it was only when he was able to cry that he understood something of our lives. Dear young boys and girls, today’s world doesn’t know how to cry. The emarginated people, those left to one side, are crying. Those who are discarded are crying. But we don’t understand much about these people in need. Certain realities of life we only see through eyes cleansed by our tears. I invite each one here to ask yourself: have I learned how to weep? Have I learned how to weep for the emarginated or for a street child who has a drug problem or for an abused child?”“Let us learn how to weep as she (Glyzelle) has shown us today and let us not forget this lesson. The great question of why so many children suffer, she did this in tears. The response that we can make today is: let us really learn how to weep. In the Gospel, Jesus cried for his dead friend, he cried in his heart for the family who lost its child, for the poor widow who had to bury her son. He was moved to tears and compassion when he saw the crowds without a pastor. If you don’t learn how to cry, you cannot be a good Christian. This is a challenge. When they posed this question to us, why children suffer, why this or that tragedy occurs in life – our response must be either silence or a word that is born of our tears. Be courageous, don’t be afraid to cry!”Francis had began today’s meeting sparing a thought for the female volunteer who died in Tacloban yesterday. “First of all, a sad piece of news. Yesterday, as Mass was about to start, a piece of scaffolding fell and, upon falling, hit a young woman who was working in the area and she died. Her name is Kristel. She worked for the organisation preparing for that Mass. She was 27 years old, young like yourselves. She worked for Catholic Relief Services as a volunteer.” The Pope asked everyone present to pray for her and her parents – she was an only child – whom he will be meeting in the next few hours.After answering Glyzelle’s question, Francis two more young people’s questions off the cuff. The first, Leandro, a university student, talked about the influence the web and smartphones have on young people’s lives. “The world of information is not bad. It is good and can help. But there is a real danger of living in a way that we accumulate information. We have so much information but maybe we don’t know what to do with that information. So we run the risk of becoming museums of young people who have everything but not knowing what to do with it. We don’t need young museums but we do need holy young people.”“What is the most important subject you have to lean at university? What is most important subject you have to learn in life? To learn how to love. This is the challenge that life offers you: to learn bow to love. Not just to accumulate information without knowing what to do with it. But through that love let that information bear fruit. For this the Gospel offers us a serene way forward: using the three languages of the mind, heart and hands – and to use them in harmony. What you think, you must feel and put into effect. Your information comes down to your heart and you put it into practice. What you think, you feel and you do. Feel what you think and feel what you do. Do what you think and what you feel. The three languages ... To think. To feel. To do. And all in harmony.”“Real love is about loving and letting yourself be loved. It’s harder to let yourself be loved than to love. That is why it is so difficult to come to the perfect love of God. We can love Him but we must let ourselves be loved by Him. Real love is being open to the love that comes to you. The love that surprises us. If you only have information you are not surprised.”The Pope then answered a question put to him by electronic engineer Rikki Macalor, who invented solar powered night lights for the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban and had just finished describing what he was doing for others. “Thank you for what you have done for your fellow citizens,” Francis said, “but I want to ask you something: you and your friends give, you help. But have you let them give to you? The answer is in your heart... Do you let others enrich you with what you are lacking? The Saducees, doctors of the law, gave a great deal to the people, the law, they taught them, but they never allowed the people to give them anything. Jesus had to come for people to feel moved and loved. How many young people among you know how to give but have not learnt how to receive? There’s only one thing you are missing: letting others give you what you are missing.”“Learn how to beg. This isn’t easy to understand. To learn how to beg. To learn how to receive with humility. To learn to be evangelized by the poor, by those we help, the sick, orphans, they have so much to give us. Have I learned how to beg? Or am I self-sufficient? Do I think I need nothing? Do you know you too are poor? Do you know your own poverty and your need to receive? Do you let yourselves be evangelised by those you serve? This is what helps you mature in your commitment to give to others. Learn how to open your hand from your very own poverty.”Finally, Francis encouraged young people to “love the poor: Do you think of the poor? Do you feel with the poor? Do you do something for the poor? Do you ask the poor to give you the wisdom they have? This is what I wish to tell you all today. Sorry if I haven’t read what I prepared for you but there is a phrase that consoles me: that reality is superior to ideas. The reality that you have is superior to the paper I have in front of me.”At the start of his address, the Pope lamented the small representation of girls at the meeting. “Women have much to tell us in today’s society. Sometimes we are too “machistas” and we don’t allow enough space to women. But women can see things from a different angle to us, with a different eye. Women are able to pose questions we men are unable to understand ... When the next pope comes to Manila, please let there be more girls.”A huge crowd accompanied the Pope through the streets of Manila despite the rain. Security forces were on high alert. Just before Francis arrived at the meeting with young people, instructions were given out over the microphones as to the procedure to follow in case any bombs exploded.

I'm sad about this, truly saddened," the 78-year-old pontiff told thousands of people who had gathered at one church shortly before he raced back to the airport.The pope's plane made the 90-minute flight back to the Philippine capital of Manila safely.But highlighting the dangers of the storm, a papal volunteer at the morning mass died as steel scaffolding collapsed on her, a church spokesman said.A plane carrying three of President Benigno Aquino's aides then overshot the runway on take-off at Tacloban and nosedived into mud, 30 minutes after Pope Francis's plane flew back to Manila. No-one was badly injured.Philippine aviation authorities confirmed that the storm's strong crosswinds had blown the plane off the tarmac.

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian troops recaptured almost all the territory of Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine they had lost to separatists in recent weeks, as thousands gathered in Kiev for a state-sponsored peace march on Sunday.The offensive brought fighting close to the industrial city of Donetsk, centre of a pro-Russian rebellion, while shelling intensified in other parts of the region known as "Donbass".With attempts to restart peace talks stalled, pro-Russian rebels have stepped up attacks in the past week and casualties have mounted, including 13 civilians killed in an attack on a passenger bus, which Kiev blamed on the separatists.Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said the army's operation had returned battle lines near the airport to the previous status quo and thus not violated the 12-point peace plan agreed with Russia and separatist leaders last September in Minsk."We succeeded in almost completely cleansing the territory of the airport, which belongs to the territory of Ukrainian forces as marked by military separation lines," he said.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was concerned by what he called an escalation by Ukrainian forces that did not contribute to peace efforts.He later said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had rejected a peace plan contained in a letter Russian President Vladimir Putin sent him on Thursday."In recent days, Russia has consistently undertaken efforts as an intermediary in regulating the conflict," Peskov said, according to the ITAR TASS news agency.It said Putin's letter included a concrete plan for both sides to withdraw heavy artillery.Russian television channel NTV published the letter on Sunday evening. In it, Putin proposed "urgent measures for the cessation of mutual shelling, and also the rapid withdrawal by the sides in the conflict of means of destruction with a calibre higher than 100 mm".A Poroshenko spokesman said the Ukrainian president would not comment on the letter this evening.

Elsewhere in the region, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said two brothers aged 7 and 16 had been killed and their 8-year-old sister injured when a shell struck a house in the government-controlled town of Vuhlehirsk, 60 km (40 miles) from Donetsk.Spokesman Vyacheslav Abroskin said the shelling had come from the direction of Yenakiieve, controlled by the rebels.Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko addressed several thousand people in Kiev late Sunday at a peace march in memory of those killed on the passenger bus."We will not give away one scrap of Ukrainian land. We will get back the Donbass ... and show that a very important aspect of our victory is our unity," he said.Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko blamed the shelling around Donetsk on the Ukrainian army. "We're talking about Kiev trying to unleash war again," Interfax quoted him as saying.A ceasefire agreed in Minsk in early September has been regularly violated since the start by both sides, and fighting has flared up again since plans for peace talks last week were abandoned.

In Donetsk, a coal-and-steel city with a pre-war population of almost a million, residents reported a sharp upturn in fighting."It was impossible to sleep - explosions, the walls were shaking. It seemed like they were firing from near the building ... The DNR (rebel) army were firing from our district," 53-year-old advertising executive Alla said by telephone.Forty-year-old plumber Andrey Tkachenko, who lives in the southern part of Donetsk, said the shelling had become noticeably worse in the past 24 hours."By now we can tell from the sound what's flying. Rain poured down on the millions of faithful that gathered in Rizal Park in Manila to attend the mass celebrated by Francis on the final day of his visit to the Philippines. An enormous crowd of faithful followed him through the streets of the city, braving the bad weather. According to Manila’s authorities, there were between 6 and 7 million faithful present at the mass, an absolute record for a papal gathering, the director of the Holy See Office Fr. Federico Lombardi report.Today marks the feast of the Santo Niño (Holy Child), which is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of January. Thousands of Santo Niño figurines donning festive garments were raised in the air as Francis passed by. During the mass, invocations were made in various local languages: Ilocano, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bikol, Cebuano, Waray and Hiligaynon. A blind woman read out the first reading using brail. In the homily read out in English, the Pope said: “Throughout my visit, I have listened to you sing the song: “We are all God’s children”. That is what the Santo Niño tells us. He reminds us of our deepest identity. All of us are God’s children, members of God’s family. Today Saint Paul has told us that in Christ we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ. This is who we are. This is our identity. “Sometimes, when we see the troubles, difficulties and wrongs all around us, we are tempted to give up. It seems that the promises of the Gospel do not apply; they are unreal. But the Bible tells us that the great threat to God’s plan for us is, and always has been, the lie. The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of sophistication, the allure of being “modern”, “like everyone else”. He distracts us with the promise of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes. And so we squander our God-given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really matter. We forget to remain, at heart, children of God. That is sin: [to] forget at heart that we are children of God.” Looking again at the Santo Niño, the Pope said: “he reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, and those larger families which are the Church, God’s family, and the world, our human family. Sadly, in our day, the family all too often needs to be protected against insidious attacks and programs contrary to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture.” Francis went on to say that “we too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage. in manila-There are no ready-made answers to the question which 12-year-old Glyzelle Palomar asked the Pope: “There are so many children who are abandoned by their own parents, there are many who fall victim to drugs and prostitution and many terrible things happen to them. Why does God allow these things to happen even to innocent children? And why are there such few people helping us?” Francis felt moved when the girl broke down in tears as she pronounced these words in the presence of more than 30,000 young people at Santo Tomás University in Manila. The Pope had just finished hearing another touching testimony by Jun Chura a former street child who now works for the Tulan ng Kabataan foundation that is looking after Glyzelle. Francis embraced both of them and placed his hand on the girl’s head for a long while.“Today I heard the only question that has no answer,” Francis said speaking off the cuff in Spanish. “Words could not express her feelings, she needed to cry. There is no answer to the real essence of your question: only when we are able to cry about the things you have said will we come close to answering this question, why do children suffer?”“When the heart is able to ask itself and weep, then we can understand something. There is a worldly compassion which is useless. You expressed something like this. It’s a compassion that makes us put our hands in our pockets and give something to the poor. The emarginated people, those left to one side, are crying. Those who are discarded are crying. But we don’t understand much about these people in need. Certain realities of life we only see through eyes cleansed by our tears. I invite each one here to ask yourself: have I learned how to weep? Have I learned how to weep for the emarginated or for a street child who has a drug problem or for an abused child?”“Let us learn how to weep as she (Glyzelle) has shown us today and let us not forget this lesson. The great question of why so many children suffer, she did this in tears. The response that we can make today is: let us really learn how to weep. In the Gospel, Jesus cried for his dead friend, he cried in his heart for the family who lost its child, for the poor widow who had to bury her son. He was moved to tears and compassion when he saw the crowds without a pastor. If you don’t learn how to cry, you cannot be a good Christian. This is a challenge. When they posed this question to us, why children suffer, why this or that tragedy occurs in life – our response must be either silence or a word that is born of our tears. Be courageous, don’t be afraid to cry!”Francis had began today’s meeting sparing a thought for the female volunteer who died in Tacloban yesterday. “First of all, a sad piece of news. Yesterday, as Mass was about to start, a piece of scaffolding fell and, upon falling, hit a young woman who was working in the area and she died. Her name is Kristel. She worked for the organisation preparing for that Mass. She was 27 years old, young like yourselves. She worked for Catholic Relief Services as a volunteer.” The Pope asked everyone present to pray for her and her parents – she was an only child – whom he will be meeting in the next few hours.After answering Glyzelle’s question, Francis two more young people’s questions off the cuff. The first, Leandro, a university student, talked about the influence the web and smartphones have on young people’s lives. “The world of information is not bad. It is good and can help. But there is a real danger of living in a way that we accumulate information. We have so much information but maybe we don’t know what to do with that information. So we run the risk of becoming museums of young people who have everything but not knowing what to do with it. We don’t need young museums but we do need holy young people.”“What is the most important subject you have to lean at university? What is most important subject you have to learn in life? To learn how to love. This is the challenge that life offers you: to learn bow to love. Not just to accumulate information without knowing what to do with it. But through that love let that information bear fruit. For this the Gospel offers us a serene way forward: using the three languages of the mind, heart and hands – and to use them in harmony. What you think, you must feel and put into effect. Your information comes down to your heart and you put it into practice. What you think, you feel and you do. This is what helps you mature in your commitment to give to others. Learn how to open your hand from your very own poverty.”Finally, Francis encouraged young people to “love the poor: Do you think of the poor? Do you feel with the poor? Do you do something for the poor? Do you ask the poor to give you the wisdom they have? This is what I wish to tell you all today. Sorry if I haven’t read what I prepared for you but there is a phrase that consoles me: that reality is superior to ideas. The reality that you have is superior to the paper I have in front of me.”At the start of his address, the Pope lamented the small representation of girls at the meeting. “Women have much to tell us in today’s society. Sometimes we are too “machistas” and we don’t allow enough space to women. But women can see things from a different angle to us, with a different eye. Pope Francis was forced Saturday to flee a fierce storm in the Philippines that killed a papal volunteer, cutting short a mercy mission to weeping survivors of a catastrophic super typhoon.Wearing a yellow plastic poncho to protect him from intense rain, Francis delivered an emotional mass to about 200,000 people in the typhoon-ravaged central Philippine city of Tacloban.However, plans to spend the entire day in Tacloban and nearby areas that were devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan 14 months ago were ruined by another storm, forcing him to fly back to Manila at lunchtime."So I apologise to you all. I'm sad about this, truly saddened," the 78-year-old pontiff told thousands of people who had gathered at one church shortly before he raced back to the airport.The pope's plane made the 90-minute flight back to the Philippine capital of Manila safely.But highlighting the dangers of the storm, a papal volunteer at the morning mass died as steel scaffolding collapsed on her, a church spokesman said.A plane carrying three of President Benigno Aquino's aides then overshot the runway on take-off at Tacloban and nosedived into mud, 30 minutes after Pope Francis's plane flew back to Manila. No-one was badly injured.Philippine aviation authorities confirmed that the storm's strong crosswinds had blown the plane off the tarmac.
