WASHINGTON (WJLA/NewsChannel 8) - One woman died, two passengers were in critical condition, a firefighter was seriously hurt and dozens more suffered lesser injuries after heavy smoke filled a Metro train and the tunnel at L'Enfant Plaza station, authorities said Monday evening.Hundreds of people were evacuated about 3:30 p.m. as thick smoke filled the rail tunnel at one of the busiest Metro locations in the city. The source of the smoke remained unknown Monday night and the closed station was being ventilated. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was taking over the investigation into exactly what happened.

Eurostar cancels all trains between France and the UK after smoke is detected in the Channel Tunnel -JAN 17,15

Eurostar services between Britain and the continent have been suspended after smoke was detected in the Channel Tunnel.The Eurostar Twitter account announced that all trains currently in service would be sent back to where they had started from.No further trains will be running on the service for the rest of the day.“All trains are returning to original stations as Tunnel closed until further notice following smoke detection,” it tweeted this afternoon.The Eurotunnel service, which operates vehicle carrier trains through the tunnel, said on Twitter that tunnel had been closed due to an “incident”.“Due to an incident in the tunnel, all departures are currently suspended in both directions. The number of Christian martyrs was twice as high in 2013 as the year before, and radical Islamist governments and groups are responsible for the vast majority of deaths and persecution around the world, according to the 2014 World Watch List.As WND reported, Open Doors USA, which assists the persecuted church around the world, compiled the World Watch list and reports 2,123 Christians were killed for their faith last year, compared to 1,201 in 2012. In fact, the killings in Syria alone (1,213) trumped the total from a year earlier.“The target of violence is mainly taking place mainly from rebel groups who are Islamic extremists, so these are jihadists practicing extreme Islam and are targeting Christian areas,” said Emily Fuentes, communications director at Open Doors USA. “Many of these Christians have had to flee, and these towns have essentially become ghost towns because they’ve cleared Christians out. In October of last year, there was a massacre in one of these towns where more than 45 people died and hundreds were injured just because it was a Christian-dominated town.“Syria is experiencing a whole new level of persecution and violence of Christians,” said Fuentes, noting that Syria is now the third worst persecutor of Christians, skyrocketing from the 36th spot it held just two years ago.Written in blood about lives of grace, “Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs” celebrates the indomitable human spirit that arises in love against tyranny and torture. So not only are they worried about the government, but they’re worried about sections of the government that are Islamic extremists or groups that are Islamic extremists coming in to attack them,” she said.Nine of the worst 10 nations for Christians are Islamic. In addition to Syria in third slot, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Maldives, Pakistan, Iran and Yemen are among the worst of the worst.But for 12 years running now, the communist North Korean regime is at the top of the list, and Fuentes said things there are only getting worse there.“It is the most hostile place to be a Christian. It is an act punishable by death in North Korea to be a Christian, either by execution sometimes on the spot or execution very soon after finding out about your faith,” said Fuentes, who explained that those who are not killed are sent to Nazi-like concentration camps. She also said the pain inflicted by the regime goes far beyond the Christians themselves.“The moral dilemma that North Korean Christians have that’s unlike any other place in the world is that if their faith is discovered, not only them but up to three generations of their family could be forced to go to these labor camps. So that’s their parents, their children, their grandchildren, all because of their faith in Christ,” she said.The biggest movers on this year’s list were the Central African Republic, leaping to 16th after not even being on the list last year, and Mali, which dropped from seventh in 2012 to 33rd this year. Fuentes said although it is a majority Christian nation, Islamic groups have infiltrated the cities and have been targeting Christians for death. She said 13 pastors have been slain there in just the past couple of months.Mali is the opposite story. International military action rooted many radical Islamists from that nation and greater religious freedom has emerged, although Fuentes hastens to add that any nation on the list is a nightmare for believers.Fuentes said the annual World Watch List is designed for multiple purposes, including the desire to attract more media attention to the surge of persecution around the world, alert public officials to address these problems and inform pastors and believers around the nation. However, she said all of those take a backseat to the No. 1 goal.“The No. 1 thing that persecuted Christians ask for in every country is our prayers. It’s not Bibles. It’s not money. It’s prayers, and they know that prayer is the most powerful thing. It can change the hearts of leaders who may not be as drawn to sharing the message of persecuted Christians. It can even change the heart of dictators like Kim Jong-Un,” Fuentes said.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium is deploying hundreds of troops to guard potential targets of terrorism, including Jewish sites and diplomatic missions, following a series of raids and arrests, the defence minister said on Saturday.Up to 300 military will be stationed at locations such as the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Brussels and NATO and EU institutions.Troops will reinforce police at least until Thursday, when authorities will review the national threat level, set at 3 on a scale of 4 this week."It's very important to say that this wasn't a simple decision. Moscow (AFP) - Russia's media watchdog on Friday warned publications that printing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed was against the country's law and ethical norms following the Charlie Hebdo attack in France."The publication in Russian media of such caricatures go against ethical and moral norms worked out over centuries," said the media and communications watchdog Roskomnadzor."Disseminating caricatures on religious themes in the media can be considered insulting or humiliating to the representatives of religious confessions and groups, and qualified as inciting ethnic and religious hatred", an offence under Russian law, it said.The publication would also violate the Russian media and anti-extremism laws, the watchdog said, adding that it was asking Russian media to "refrain from publishing caricatures that can be seen as a violation".The watchdog published the statement as a response to the ongoing debate on the "legality of publishing caricatures depicting religious objects of worship which affect feelings of religious people."Many newspapers and magazines around the world reprinted cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed by Charlie Hebdo, whose Paris office was attacked by Islamist gunmen on January 7, leading to the deaths of 12 people.Although Russia's leadership extended its condolences to France, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov participated in the unity march staged at the weekend, pro-Kremlin commentators and Muslims accused the cartoonists of provoking the attack.Russia's Council of Muftis - a top Muslim authority - condemned the attack, but said that "perhaps the sin of provocation... is no less dangerous for peace than the sin of those who yield to the provocation".It further said Charlie Hebdo's post-attack issue featuring a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed on the front page was an "unacceptable response" to the shooting, because one "cannot laugh at the feelings of the faithful."In a letter to Russia's Prosecutor General, the council chairman and Russia's top Muslim cleric, Ravil Gainutdin, asked authorities to "take necessary measures to prevent publications that defame the Prophet Mohammed" by monitoring Russian media to verify the prohibition is being respected.None of Russia's top papers ran the cartoon, but some included pictures of it on their websites.Kommersant daily reported a scuffle Thursday in a Moscow mosque, where a group of men tried to disrupt prayers and urge believers to go storm the French Embassy.

PARIS: A violent mob torched at least three churches in Niger's capital Niamey on Saturday (Jan 17) during fresh protests against Charlie Hebdo magazine, as France's president stressed his commitment to "freedom of expression".Around 1,000 youths wielding iron bars, clubs and axes rampaged through the city, hurling rocks at police who responded with tear gas in a second day of violent demonstrations against the satirical magazine's publication of the Prophet Mohammed.The French embassy in Niamey urged its citizens to stay at home, the day after a rally against Charlie Hebdo in the country's second city of Zinder left four dead and 45 injured. "Be very cautious, avoid going out," the embassy said on its website as rioters also ransacked several French-linked businesses, including telephone kiosks run by Orange.In his first reaction to the violence, which also erupted in Pakistan on Friday, President Francois Hollande stressed on Saturday that France was committed to "freedom of expression".Some 15,000 people also rallied in Russia's Muslim North Caucasus region of Ingushetia against Charlie Hebdo, which depicted on its most recent cover a weeping prophet holding a "Je suis Charlie" sign.

Meanwhile, jittery European nations stepped up security in the wake of last week's attacks in France that claimed 17 lives, including 12 at Charlie Hebdo's offices. Belgium began deploying hundreds of armed troops to patrol the streets after security forces smashed a suspected "terrorist" cell planning to kill police officers.And in London, authorities were mulling "further measures" to protect police "given some of the deliberate targeting of the police we have seen in a number of countries across Europe and the world," said Mark Rowley, head of counter-terrorism for the British police. British police officers, for the most part unarmed, might be equipped with taser guns as part of reinforced security measures, according to the local press.Traffic was suspended in the Channel Tunnel between France and Britain after smoke was spotted, but there was no immediate indication if there was a link to recent attacks.French and Belgian authorities were grilling suspected accomplices both of the Paris gunmen and the alleged "terrorist" cell raided in eastern Belgium. Belgian police were hunting for the suspected mastermind of the cell, a notorious 27-year-old militant who spent time in Syria and who may have prepared the foiled attack from bases in Greece and Turkey, according to local media.Asked about protesters who burned the French flag, Hollande said: "They have to be punished because when it happens in France, it's intolerable, but also abroad. I'm thinking of countries where sometimes they don't understand what freedom of expression is because they have been deprived of it. But also, we have supported these countries in their fight against terrorism," said Hollande as he toured a market in his heartland of Tulle, central France.

SECRET BURIAL

Said Kouachi, one of the militant brothers who gunned down 12 people at Charlie Hebdo's offices before being cut down by security forces in a siege, has already been buried in secret, it emerged on Saturday. He was buried Friday in the eastern city of Reims, where he lived for around two years, under heavy police protection and with a handful of family members present, according to a well-informed source.His grave was unmarked and the name of the cemetery not divulged. His brother Cherif was expected to be buried soon in the Paris suburb of Gennevilliers.The mayor of Reims, Arnaud Robinet, said he was forced by law to accept the burial but was initially opposed to the gunman being buried in his city. He feared "a tomb that could become a shrine for people to gather around or a pilgrimage site for fanatics". Said Kouachi's wife decided not to attend the burial, in order to keep it secret, said her lawyer Antoine Flasaquier. "She is now relieved that her husband has been buried with discretion and dignity," said the lawyer.Charlie Hebdo, which has flown off the shelves in record numbers since the attacks, announced on Saturday it would extend its print run to seven million copies. Before the assault on its Paris headquarters, Charlie Hebdo had a circulation of around 30,000, with only a handful being sold abroad.Touring the cheese and meat stands in the Tulle market, Hollande urged the locals to pick up where they left off before the worst attacks on French soil in half a century. KUALA LUMPUR: The East Java Police Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team has identified five more bodies out of the 162 people who were on board the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Saturday.
Kompas.com reported the bodies were identified through DNA samples obtained from the victims’ personal belongings.“The bodies were identified through DNA obtained from the victims’ personal belongings such as their combs and toothbrushes and not through DNA obtained from their family members.The method was used because the victims’ DNA during the post-mortem had deteriorated. As such we had to gather antemortem data from their personal belongings,” DVI chief Budiyono told reporters.

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: Indonesian divers on Friday (Jan 16) again failed to reach the main body of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the sea last month with 162 people on board, as strong underwater currents hampered efforts.Flight QZ8501 went down in the Java Sea on Dec 28 in stormy weather, during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.The plane's black boxes were recovered this week, providing investigators with a wealth of information to determine what caused the crash, and on Wednesday a Singapore navy vessel spotted the fuselage, the jet's main body. So far just 51 bodies of the crash victims have been recovered, but authorities hope the main section will contain most of those belonging to passengers and crew.Underwater photos taken by high-tech search equipment showed the fuselage and part of Malaysia-based AirAsia's motto - "Now Everyone Can Fly" - painted on the plane's exterior.For the past two days, divers have been trying to reach the wreckage but the inhospitable conditions in the area have prevented them from accessing it. Search and rescue agency official S.B Supriyadi said that on Friday "the divers were hampered by strong currents which them stopped from reaching the fuselage".Officials say that if it proves difficult to retrieve bodies from the main section while it is still on the seabed, search and rescue teams will try to lift it. The plane's tail was raised out of the water last weekend using giant balloons.Bambang Soelistyo, Basarnas chief, said: "I have co-ordinated with the military officers to prepare tugboats, crane vessels and divers. Most importantly, I hope that we can lift up the aircraft fuselage and increase the possibility of finding more bodies."The Basarnas chief was also able to confirm that another body has been successfully retrieved near the small island of Pulau Sembilan. That takes the total bodies recovered to 51.There was a huge international hunt for the crashed plane, involving ships from several countries including the US and China, but the search has now been scaled back.The jet's black boxes, the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been flown to Jakarta, where the National Transportation Safety Committee and international experts have started a probe.Indonesia's meteorological agency has said bad weather may have caused the crash, but only the black boxes will be able to provide definitive answers. TORONTO - Dr. Benjamin Levin will plead guilty on March 3 to some of the child pornography-related charges against him, court heard Friday.Levin will plead guilty to some offences, but not all of the seven charges that were laid against the renowned educator.The details of the offences will be revealed during the March court appearance when Levin appears before Justice Heather McArthur.Levin has been on bail since July 2013 when the then 61-year-old University of Toronto professor was charged.He is alleged to have authored graphic child porn and counselled someone online on how to commit a sexual assault on a child.Levin has lectured around the world and has been an advisor to several high-ranking Liberals.Justice Fergus O'Donnell released Levin in July 2013 on $100,000 bail posted by his two sureties, brother Martin Levin, the former books editor at the Globe and Mail, and Richard Levin, the registrar at the University of Toronto. TORONTO - Former Ontario deputy education minister Ben Levin will be going to trial to defend himself against child pornography charges.“Yes,” his lawyer Clayton Ruby said Thursday when asked if he requested that the case go directly to trial at this week’s preliminary hearing.Levin, he indicated, will fight the allegations and plead not guilty.“He pleaded not guilty to all counts and will be tried in Provincial Court,” said Ruby. “Dates to be set (Friday) morning.”The 62-year-old Levin is a University of Toronto professor and was photographed on a float at the Pride Parade with Premier Kathleen Wynne and federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau prior to his July 2013 arrest.As the Sun’s Michele Mandel reported in July 2013 “following an international online probe that police said was sparked by undercover child exploitation investigators in New Zealand, Levin initially faced ... two counts of distributing child pornography and one count each of making child pornography, counselling to commit an indictable offence and agreeing to or arranging for a sexual offence against a child under 16.” Two other charges of possessing and accessing child porn were added. Wynne said at the time of the arrest that she was shocked by the charges.“Insidious crimes like these are absolutely terrifying,” Wynne said. “The safety and well-being of our children has always been my absolute priority and at no time did I have any suspicion of criminal behaviour. I am confident that the police and judicial system will address these serious allegations.”At the request of Ruby who asked for it to be sent straight to trial it is believed these serious allegations will be tested before the court sometime in 2015 or possibly 2016.

Dr. Benjamin Levin is now free on bail, but facing child exploitation charges, he can never be truly free again.A renowned educator who lectured around the world, had the ear of several high ranking Liberals, a prestigious research chair, even a brother who is ambassador to Cuba; how easily a distinguished life can implode, 61 years of a good name instantly besmirched, with the laying of seven charges that include allegations by Toronto Police that he authored graphic child porn and counselled someone online on how to commit a sexual assault on a child.Dressed in a blue sports shirt and black pants, the married father of three daughters looked relieved when Justice Fergus ODonnell released him Wednesday on $100,000 bail posted by his two sureties, brother Martin Levin, the former books editor at the Globe and Mail, and Richard Levin, the registrar at the University of Toronto.A third brother, Matthew, is posted in Cuba where he is Canada’s ambassador.The Winnipeg native seemed overwhelmed at times, burying his face in his hands, as he listened to his two brothers being questioned as potential sureties during the lengthy bail hearing, which was covered by a publication ban. In the end, the judge agreed he could be released to live under the watchful guardianship of his elder brother, Martin, but he can return home with his wife’s consent once she returns to the city. Outside the court, noted defence lawyer Clayton Ruby said Levin’s wife is currently out of town on a canoe trip.

What a shock awaits the poor woman.

Almost equal to the shock that must have reverberated through academic and Liberal circles after news of his arrest early Monday morning at his home near Lawrence Ave. and Avenue Rd. Levin, currently a tenured professor at U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, was a former deputy minister of education in the Dalton McGuinty government and a former member of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s transition team. In a recent CP24 video from Toronto’s Pride parade, he is seen with Wynne, current federal Liberal golden boy Justin Trudeau and former interim leader Bob Rae.

How quickly will they all scurry? There is little more toxic than these kind of allegations.

“I was shocked to hear about these charges through the news on Monday,” Wynne said in a statement late Wednesday. “Insidious crimes like these are absolutely terrifying. The safety and well-being of our children has always been my absolute priority and at no time did I have any suspicion of criminal behaviour. He is not to use social media or any video or phone messaging. He can’t knowingly be in the presence or communicate with anyone under 16 or be near pools or schools.Levin has to surrender his travel documents and can only leave the province to visit his elderly father in Winnipeg.Ruby said his client has made an enormous contribution to the province’s education system and he intends to “work very hard” to prove Levin’s innocence. He returns to court Aug. 8.A trial is probably at least 18 months away, but even if Levin is eventually acquitted, the damage is already done. The linking of an educator to the alleged abuse of children? There could be no more resounding death knell for a once illustrious career.

MONTREAL - Charlie Hebdo went on sale across Canada Friday, flying off the shelves as the Paris lampoon magazine buried staff members killed in last week's terrorist massacre.Magazine retailer Presse Commerce, which operates 450 Canadian stores, said it had 300 reservations for Charlie Hebdo at one Montreal store alone, but just 200 copies for the entire country.A small number were available at stores in Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary, but most were sent to Quebec.Romain Fleury, an executive at Presse Commerce, told QMI Agency he's never seen such demand for a magazine, not even after the 9/11 attacks."People want to have a copy of the magazine, I suppose, to share something, to participate...a gesture of their support," Fleury said from his Montreal office."It's part of history," said Tim Goulet, a Gatineau, Quebec man who was first in line at Mags and Fags in downtown Ottawa to hand over $6.50 for a coveted copy of this week's edition. "I want to be able to read it and get it sealed and framed."Two brothers - Cherif and Said Kouachi - opened fire on Charlie Hebdo's offices on Jan. 7, killing 12 people, including the editor-in-chief and all four star cartoonists. The killers were shot dead two days later after a long standoff with police.Charlie Hebdo had angered terrorists by printing cartoons of the Muslim prophet Mohammed. Surviving staff went ahead with a "survivors' edition" this week, again featuring Mohammed, this time on the front cover.The magazine printed five million copies, 100 times more than usual. It sent just 1,500 copies to Canada.Canadian distributor LMPI said it expects all of the Canadian copies to sell out quickly, and it hopes to order 15,000 more.Fleury said there were no plans for extra security at stores despite Charlie Hebdo's provocative content."Even though Canada has been a target with the (terrorist attacks) in the fall, we don't feel concerned."Mike Gwilliam, the fourth in line, wanted a copy for its symbolic value."It's important for free speech and western civilization," said Gwilliam, a web producer at Sun News Network. MANILA: Pope Francis on Thursday (Jan 15) condemned killing in God's name but warned religion could not be insulted, weighing into a global debate on free speech ahead of a rapturous welcome in the Philippines.The pontiff made the comments to reporters as he flew from Sri Lanka to begin a five-day visit in the Catholic Church's Asian stronghold that is tipped to attract a world-record papal crowd."To kill in the name of God is an absurdity," Francis said when asked about last week's assault by militant gunmen on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in which 12 people died.But the 78-year-old pontiff also said "each religion has its dignity" and "there are limits". "If a good friend speaks badly of my mother, he can expect to get punched, and that's normal. You cannot provoke, you cannot insult other people's faith, you cannot mock it," he said.Brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi stormed Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on Jan 7, killing some of France's most loved satirical cartoonists in their outrage over the magazine's repeated depictions of the Prophet Mohammed.The assault was followed two days later by an attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris by a gunman claiming to have coordinated his actions with the brothers. PASSIONATE WELCOME

Church bells tolled across the Philippines as his plane touched down, as hundreds of children on the tarmac chanted: "Welcome Pope Francis".Hundreds of thousands of people then crowded the closed-off route the pope passed as he made a 35-minute trip in a "popemobile" from the airport to the Vatican's embassy to rest overnight.The pope stood on the back of the vehicle, which had no walls, waving and smiling constantly to the crowd. 'STILL SUFFERING'

Francis, who is the fourth pope to visit the Philippines, is also due to visit communities devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan, which left 7,350 people dead or missing in 2013.On Saturday, he is scheduled to deliver a mass to tens of thousands of people in Tacloban, one of the worst-hit cities in the central Philippines, and have an intimate lunch with 30 typhoon survivors."The heart of the message will be the poor, the poor who want to move forward, who have suffered from the typhoon and are still suffering its consequences," the pope told reporters on way to the Philippines.The main scheduled events on Friday included a state welcome at the presidential palace, a mass at Manila Cathedral and a meeting at a shopping mall with thousands of families.Authorities have expressed major concerns over the pope's security in the Philippines, where attempts have been made to kill visiting pontiffs twice before.Nearly 40,000 soldiers and police are being deployed to protect Francis in what Philippine military chief General Gregorio Catapang described as a "security nightmare". Potential stampedes from the giant crowds, as well as the threat of Islamic militants or lone-wolf assailants, are among the concerns.Philippine President Benigno Aquino made a nationally televised address this week specifically to highlight the security threats for the pope and call on all Filipinos to help protect him. BRUSSELS: Police on Thursday (Jan 15) shot dead two suspects in eastern Belgium as they were about to launch "large-scale" attacks in the country after returning from Syria, prosecutors said.They said a third suspect was arrested in the eastern town of Verviers and that the police had carried about 10 raids in all, including in the capital Brussels, after surveillance suggested an attack was imminent.The incident comes as Europe is on high alert after 17 people were killed in the militant attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket in Paris last week."An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP without giving further details. Another official confirmed separately the incident in Verviers, which is close to the German border some 125 kilometres from Brussels.In May 2014, four people were shot dead in a suspected militant attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels. Frenchman Mehdi Nemmouche, who had previously been in Syria, has been charged with murder.The men targeted in Verviers were under surveillance having returning from Syria a week ago, Belgian media reported. Intelligence indicated they were planning an attack, the reports said.Several reports said a series of other anti-terror raids were under way across Belgium, including in the capital Brussels, where the European Union is head quartered.Residents reported gunfire and blasts in the raid on a former bakery in central Verviers. "I heard a sort of explosion, followed by several gunshots," one local resident told RTBF. PARIS GUNMAN PROBE

Belgian investigators said earlier Thursday they were probing whether an arms dealer sold weapons used in the Paris attacks, after confirming supermarket gunman Amedy Coulibaly sold the man a car belonging to his partner Hayat Boumeddiene.There was no immediate confirmation of any link between the Coulibaly investigation and Thursday's raid. The man, Neetin Karasular, from the airport city of Charleroi in French-speaking southern Belgium, is in detention on suspicion of a possible link to the weapons used in the Paris attacks."The issue of weapons is under investigation," prosecutors' office spokesman Eric Van der Sijpt told AFP, adding that Karasular was under suspicion for "arms trafficking". Belgian prosecutors are working with French authorities to establish any "possible link" to last week's Paris attacks.Coulibaly, who was killed by police on Friday, is also believed to have shot dead a policewoman in another Paris attack.
