U.S.-What Bergdahl’s Journal Entries Tell Us About His Troubled State of Mind

In a diary entry written shortly before Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl headed to Army basic training in Georgia and more than a year before he walked off base in Afghanistan, the young recruit wrote, “I know that there is light in this darkness, and that I can actuly [sic] reach it if I keep walking, keep moving to it.” That excerpt, from a journal kept by Bergdahl before his capture by the Taliban in 2009, is just one of many that suggest a restless soldier eager to walk away.Bergdahl’s writings, obtained by the Washington Post from a friend of the young soldier, paint a portrait of a vulnerable and troubled young man who was often psychologically at odds with those around him. Bergdahl, who was discharged from the Coast Guard in 2006 and drifted for several years before joining the Army in June 2008, called himself “the lone wolf of deadly nothingness,” and mentioned having “plans” shortly before he apparently walked off the Afghanistan army base.The excerpts the Post published from Bergdahl’s journal do not answer the question of whether he deserted or not, and may not play a significant role in the House of Representatives’ investigation into the events surrounding his disappearance from base. But they do reveal important details about his character.

Here’s what Bergdahl’s journal suggests about the soldier’s state of mind before his captivity.

1-He struggled to maintain mental stability. Bergdahl wrote of a “darkness” around him and seemed to harbor deeper psychological unease. “I will not lose this mind, this world I have deep inside,” he wrote shortly before he deployed. “I will not lose this passion of beauty.” In one diary excerpt from 2009, repetitions of the phrase “velcro or zipper/velcro or zipper/velcro or zipper,” cover nearly two pages.
2-He seemed frustrated with the Army. Bergdahl was disillusioned with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, and while his comrades called him “a good soldier,” the private was aloof and brooding. “i’m at an odd place here,” he wrote.”Bullet sponges… This is what some of the SEALs call regular Army and other mass ground troops. Its right, the job of a soldier is basically to die,” he wrote.
3-He longed to travel. Bergdahl wasn’t accustomed to staying put for long periods of time. “One day, if I make it out of this, I will go around the world. I will not use airplanes, but only trains, boats, vehicles, and… (if I still have them) my feet,” he wrote. And later, “Walk us to the end of this. Walk on. And walk us out of here…”
4-He had a “plan.” Bergdahl’s journal discusses a “plan” on several occasions, but it’s far from conclusive whether he was planning to desert the Army. In an email to a friend’s daughter written three weeks before he walked off post, he wrote “Im good. But plans have begun to form, no time line yet. . . love you! Bowe.”His friend’s daughter wrote back, “Exactly what kind of plans are you thinking of?”“l1nes n0 t g00 d h3rE tell u when 1 ha ve a si coure 1ine about pl/-\ns,” Bergdahl wrote back in coded script next day. “There is still time yet for thinking.”
5-He expressed feelings of alienation. “Like i’m pulling away from the human world, but getting closer to people,” he wrote in Afghanistan. “Almost as if its not the people I hate, but society’s ideas and reality that hold them . . . I want to change so much and all the time, but then my mind just locks down, as if there was some one else in my mind shutting the door in my face. . . . I want to pull my mind out and drop kick it into a deep gorge.”Bergdahl, who is still recovering after his five years in prison, has yet to speak to the media — or, if reports are to believed, his family.

Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant recently exchanged for five Taliban detainees after he had spent nearly five years in detention himself, joined the Coast Guard in 2006 and was dismissed just 26 days later, according to military sources.Lt. Col. Elaine Conway confirmed to CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan that the Army knew that Bergdahl had been "administratively discharged" from the Coast Guard. When asked whether this was known at the time of his enlistment and whether he was given a waiver, an Army spokesperson said they were "looking into it" and could not comment on the grounds for the discharge.The U.S. Coast Guard's Lisa Novak confirmed that Bergdahl went to boot camp but was dismissed 26 days later on an "uncharacterized discharge," which means that he didn't serve long enough to have his performance judged or characterized.

The reasons for the dismissal are still unclear.

The revelation first came to light in The Washington Post, which also obtained several of Bergdahl's writings. The writings, along with other previously revealed emails, appear to reveal a man struggling with his mental health, "trying to keep myself togeather [sic]," he wrote."I'm worried," he wrote in one journal entry before he deployed, according to the Post. "The closer I get to ship day, the calmer the voices are. I'm reverting. I'm getting colder. My feelings are being flushed with the frozen logic and the training, all the unfeeling cold judgment of the darkness.""I will not lose this mind, this world I have deep inside," he wrote a few pages later, according to the newspaper. "I will not lose this passion of beauty."Part of the debate around the Obama administration's decision to free Taliban prisoners in exchange for Bergdahl has been the murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance and capture in 2009. Critics call him a deserter or a traitor; others call him simply confused.The officer who investigated Bergdahl's disappearance for the Army a few years ago interviewed many of the same soldiers who are now calling him a deserter. They described him as always on time, dressed in proper uniform and courteous, a little quirky "but not freaky." One example some gave is that he smoked a pipe rather than chewed tobacco like many of his comrades.Although Bergdahl had sneaked off the outpost once before, his superiors never found out and his buddies thought it was neat he had gotten away with it.The investigating officer could not reach any definite conclusions about what Bergdahl was thinking when he disappeared for good, but he speculated that the soldier was simply "bored" with the routine of standing guard.CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that one Pentagon official described him as "at worst, a deserter. At best, a stupid kid who caused us to expend great energy and resources to bring him home."Bergdahl told his parents in earlier emails he was "ashamed to even be American" and was disgusted with the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and with the Army, according to a 2012 report in Rolling Stone magazine."The future is too good to waste on lies," one email reads. "And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong."The emails were provided to the magazine by Bergdahl's family in Idaho, after they had gone public with their discontent with U.S. efforts to free their son, though there was no way to authenticate the emails.Whatever Bergdahl's mental state was, it is currently being closely evaluated and treated.The 28-year-old soldier is taking part in the military's reintegration program, a three-phase program designed to help with the physical and mental healing process of returnees.Bergdahl completed the first and shortest phase at a military base in eastern Afghanistan, where he was taken immediately after his rescue. Following a medical evaluation, he was flown to the U.S. military's Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for the second phase of the reintegration process. It is unclear how long he will remain in Germany, but much of his care there will focus on his physical well-being.Medical personnel are determining the type of assistance Bergdahl will need once he is transported to his next stop, Brooke Army Military Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.This will be the third phase of the reintegration process, where much of the difficult psychological counseling will begin.

Al Qaeda Name Change: Osama bin Laden is alleged to have stated in his final writings that Al-Qaeda was suffering from a marketing problem and that a name change might change Al Qaeda's appeal to the Arab world. Right on cue, the U.S. government and mainstream media began stating that Al Qaeda is going to a new and upgraded version now dubbed "Al Qaeda 2.0".

5. Al Qaeda 2.0: With names such as "White Al Qaeda" and "Jihad Jane" not quite doing the job, Al Qaeda has apparently decided to go with the tried and true "2.0" name upgrade. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will meet its search and rescue (SAR) operations counterparts in Canberra and Beijing to discuss assets deployment in its new phase of the search for missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) airliner MH370.The Deployment of Assets Committee, led by Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, will head to Canberra Tuesday to coordinate and finalise the terms and arrangements for Malaysia's participation."The sub-committee has been tasked to coordinate the participation of Malaysia’s assets especially with regards to the Government Furnished Equipment (GFE), consistent with Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s tender process requirements."We will also raise with our tripartite partners how best to manage and coordinate the deployment of assets that Malaysia have personally requested for from the US and other nation partners," Datuk Jailani Johari, chair of the Liaison, Communication and Media committee said in a press briefing today.Chairs of the ministerial sub committees, led by Next-of-Kin Committee chair Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin, will subsequently go to Beijing to update on the latest efforts and Malaysia’s contribution in the operations.Prior to this, Malaysia had set up three ministerial committees to streamline the ongoing search efforts, namely the Next-of-Kin Committee, Technical Committee and Deployment of Assets Committee, in addition to the Liaison, Communication and Media committee."We will also be discussing with the Chinese leadership on their views and future plans with regards to the MH370 search operation ranging from issues related to next-of-kins, asset deployment and technical expertise.”

PM, Hishammuddin to meet Voice370 in due time

Meanwhile, the Malaysian authorities have also acknowledged a request by Voice370, an international committee set up to represent families of those on board MH370, to meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Hamzah.“This meeting will be arranged in due time and we look forward to establish a working template in dealing with issues raised by the next-of-kins," Jailani said.

Cost of private contractors will be shared 50-50

On the cost of SAR, Hishammuddin revealed in parliament today that Malaysia has to date spent RM27.6 million in the first phase of the search operations to locate MH370.The costs mainly covered the logistics of the Malaysian rescue team, including fuel and food.As for the costs for hiring private contractors to assist in the search efforts, it will be split in half been Malaysia and Australia, which is coordinating the multinational operations through the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC).“JACC will tender out services to the interested companies. So far, we have not known any participants. The cost is to be determined and be shared 50-50 between Malaysia and Australia,” Abdul Rahim added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has to date spent RM27.6 million in the first phase of the search operations to locate the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370.Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the cost covered the logistic needs of the Malaysian rescue team, which included fuel cost and food.However, Hishammuddin said that the cost has not been finalised yet.He added that the rescuers involved in the operations were from the Royal Malaysian Airforce, Royal Malaysian Police, Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysian Navy and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.The cost that was incurred by the Malaysian rescue team is a small amount if compared with the amount spent by other countries for their assets."I am proud that Malaysia has many friends that come forward to help in the search at their own expenses and without asking for anything in return,” he said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.Prior to that, Hishammuddin, during the question and answer session in Dewan Rakyat, said the search operations has entered a transition phase that will focus on searching under the sea surface.“During the Transition phase, three main activities will be carried out including re-analysing the date to determine a more accurate search area, performing bathymetric survey for mapping the seabed and acquiring the latest assets with side scan sonar capabilities,” he said.He added that an international investigating team was formed on April 25, and the team will release a complete report regarding the investigation findings and recommendations.

ATSB seeks specialist services for MH370 search-Date: 04 June 2014
The ATSB today released a request for tender to acquire the services of a specialist company capable of conducting a deep-water search under ATSB direction for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.Engaged as a prime contractor, the company will provide the expertise, equipment and vessel(s) necessary to undertake an intensified underwater search for the missing Boeing 777 aircraft in the defined zone in the southern Indian Ocean.While the precise search zone is currently being established by an international search strategy working group, it is expected that the successful tenderer will search an area up to 60,000 square kilometres based on the 'seventh handshake' arc where the aircraft last communicated with the Inmarsat satellite. Definition of the search zone will be finalised within two to three weeks.The successful tenderer will localise, positively identify and map the debris field of MH370 using specialist equipment such as towed and autonomous underwater vehicles with mounted sonar and/or optical imaging systems.The intensified search will begin in August 2014 and is expected to take up to 12 months, depending on weather conditions. The successful tenderer will use the data from a bathymetric survey (already underway) to navigate the search zone, which has water depth between 1000 and 6000 metres.The search vessel(s) used by the prime contractor may also be coordinated with other vessels also undertaking search activities in the search zone on behalf of other countries.A copy of the request for tender is available on the AusTender website at www.tenders.gov.au. Search for MH370-JACC-MAY 30,14

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau continues to refine the area where the aircraft entered the water based on ground-breaking and multi-disciplinary technical analysis of satellite communication and aircraft performance, passed from the international air crash investigative team comprising analysts from Malaysia, the United States, the UK, China and Australia.All the available data indicates the aircraft entered the sea close to a long but narrow arc of the Indian Ocean. Prioritising the most probable search area along this arc is the focus of current activities.

Initial Search

The Australian Government accepted responsibility for search operations in the southern Indian Ocean on 17 March 2014.The initial activities involved a surface search of the southern Indian Ocean for floating debris and a sub-surface search for the aircraft black boxes.The surface search was coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), supported by the Australian Defence Force and other agencies.The initial search phase involved 21 military aircraft and 19 ships, covering search areas of more than 4.5 million square kilometres. Civilian aircraft contracted to AMSA also participated in the search.

Transition

On 28 April 2014, Australian Prime Minister Abbott announced that the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 would enter a new phase, involving an intensified underwater search led by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).The activities involved the use of the Bluefin-21 Automated Underwater Vehicle to carry out a search of the seabed for aircraft wreckage in the vicinity of the Towed Pinger Locator detections. The Bluefin-21 was operated from ADV Ocean Shield, with the assistance of US Navy and civilian experts.Bluefin-21 completed its last mission searching the remaining areas in the vicinity of the acoustic signals detected in early April by the Towed Pinger Locator deployed from ADV Ocean Shield, within its depth operating limits. No signs of aircraft debris were found by the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.In parallel, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been leading, in consultation with Malaysia and China, the review and analysis of all data and information relating to the likely flight path of MH370, together with information acquired in the course of the search to date. This work continues and will confirm the best areas on which to focus an effective future search.

Bathymetry

A bathymetric survey of the areas of the arc has commenced. The bathymetric survey—or mapping of the ocean floor—is being done in preparation for a commercially contracted deep ocean search, including towed side-scan sonar operations.

Deep Water Search

The deep water search will involve a comprehensive search of the sea floor for a debris field and will require the use of side-scan or synthetic aperture sonars and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.
This activity will need to be operated from specialised vessels by teams of qualified experts. These capabilities will be acquired through an open tender process managed by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Timeframe

Once the search enters the deep water search phase, the 60,000 square kilometre search is anticipated to take 8-12 months to complete.Please see the ATSB website for fact sheets on the search for MH370.
