BRUSSELS - EU policies ranging from the single market and trade, to culture and transport, are good for the UK, according to a series of government reports on the balance of power between London and Brussels.The findings are contained in eight reports published on Thursday (13 February), which form the second batch of the UK's “Balance of Competences” review, comprising more than 30 separate studies by a range of government departments.The remaining 18 papers are expected to be published later this year.
The reports were intended to form the basis for a future re-negotiation of the UK's EU membership.Last year, PM David Cameron outlined plans to re-write the UK's membership terms followed by an “in/out” referendum in 2017 if his Conservative Party wins the next election.However, Whitehall's analysis of the free movement of persons, which is expected to touch on the controversial issues of economic migration and welfare tourism within the EU, has been temporarily shelved.Cameron's Conservative-led government has been embroiled in a long running row with the European Commission over whether economic migrants from other EU countries should be able to claim benefits, and has also mooted the possibility of imposing a cap on EU migration.A row between Liberal Democrat members of the coalition government and home secretary Theresa May over the evidence behind her calls for tighter controls on migration is believed to be behind the shelving of the paper.Eurosceptics are already unhappy the reports published so far have all offered qualified support for the way that Brussels is using its powers."The whole review has been commandeered by the pro-EU establishment and is going to be a total whitewash that claims EU membership has no downsides and only advantages," said the UK Independence Party (Ukip) in a statement."But for possibly the most important chapter of all to get held back altogether is totally unacceptable."The reports are based on more than 600 pieces of written evidence from contributors including businesses, trade associations, think tanks and politicians, the vast majority of which have given broad support to the current settlement."Of the 14 reports that have now been published all of them have concluded that the balance of power between Westminster and Brussels is broadly right," Christopher Howarth, an analyst for the Open Europe think tank told EUobserver."For a Tory-led government this is a bit of a surprise to say the least.”The report on trade and investment argues that EU trade policy has been beneficial for UK, despite the proportion of the country's exports going to the EU falling from 54 percent to 47 percent over the past decade.However, the total value of its exports has increased in this period from £130 billion (€160 billion) to £240 billion (€275 billion)."The balance of competence for the free movement of goods and IP [intellectual property] works in the UK's interests," another report says.In a sign of just how surprising the outcome has been, Glenis Willmott, a senior MEP from the British opposition Labour party, also welcomed the texts."[They] highlight just how important European Union membership is to jobs and growth, showing the positive impact of the EU on the free movement of goods, trade and investment, research and development, tourism, and civil justice," she said.

EU contributes millions to destroy Syria chemical weapons

The EU on Monday contributed €12 million to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to help destroy Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons, reports the AFP. The total costs for the operation is set to range between €25-30 million. The EU had pledged to make the contribution in December.

Baltic candidate' challenges Juncker for EU top job

Berlin - Conservative parties in the three Baltic states are supporting former Latvian prime minister Valdis Dombrovskis to take the pole position for the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) in the EU elections.Speaking to EUobserver on Saturday (15 February), Dombrovskis said he decided to put his name forward as the EPP top candidate because he believes "there is something from my work experience as a prime minister of Latvia which can be useful also at a European level."Dombrovskis, 42 years old, is running again to be an MEP after being elected to the European Parliament in 2004-2009. He became Latvian PM in 2009, just as the financial and economic crisis struck his home country.Latvia was the first EU country to ask for an international bailout, but later rebounded and managed to meet the strict economic and fiscal criteria for euro membership. It became a member of the single currency on 1 January. Dombrovskis, however, had already resigned a few weeks earlier, following the collapse of a supermarket which killed 54 people.The EPP has started the process of selecting its top candidate for the EU elections, with a final decision due in three weeks' time at a congress in Dublin.So far, the other official candidates in the running are ex-eurogroup chief Jean-Claude Juncker (59 years old) and EU internal market commissioner Michel Barnier (63 years old), both veterans of EU politics.Asked if the need for younger politicians on the EU scene was also a reason for his candidacy, Dombrovskis laughed, saying he would "certainly not like to make age the main issue.”"I appreciate that the EPP is able to put forward other experienced candidates. Mr. Juncker of course has huge experience in both national govenrment and EU matters, having also led the Eurogroup for a number of years.""But I decided to put forward my candidacy to propose these ideas about competitiveness. As I am always saying, I am realistic about my chances, but I still think it's worth putting forward my candidacy," he said.Dombrovskis' main argument is that while Europe has done a lot to boost fiscal discipline and reduce budget deficits it has focused less on increasing competitiveness."You cannot sustain higher levels of welfare and prosperity without high levels of competitiveness, particularly in today's environment with the emergence of new economies," Dombrovskis said.He admitted there is no "miracle solution" to bring Europe out of its current situation of high unemployment and sluggish growth.But he said things could improve with the creation of a single market for the digital economy, fairer competition in the energy market, and more ambitious investments in research and development "where the US and Japan are outspending the EU.""Similar to the European Semester co-ordinating our fiscal policies, we would need an instrument to coordinate policies related to competitiveness," Dombrovskis noted, echoing similar calls from Germany, which backs “binding contracts” on competitiveness.The Latvian politician admitted that discussions on binding contracts are "unclear" because some countries insist on more "solidarity" in return for the accords, amid little clarity on where the money would come from.Asked if he has received any signals from Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the most powerful leader in the EPP family - Dombrovskis said that his candidacy is still a “work in progress.""Of course we are working with different member states and offices. There are several heads of government I have discussed this matter personally with, there are several which I contacted through their offices, we also work with MEPs. But it's still work in progress," he noted.Merkel has so far refused to fully endorse any of the candidates. She said she has "great sympathy" for Juncker, but added that the final decision will be taken in Dublin.Barnier is seen as having few chances to secure the nomination because he has no EPP leader to endorse his bid, coming, as he does, from France’s opposition centre-right UMP party, instead of French President Francois Hollande’s Socialist faction.

Abbas: We don’t want to divide Jerusalem, or flood Israel with refugees

RAMALLAH — The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their capital but do not seek to divide the city, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday. He also said he did not want to flood Israel with millions of Palestinian refugees.“We don’t want to redivide Jerusalem,” he told 300 Israeli students and young activists at the Muqata, his presidential compound. “We would leave the city open, and have two municipalities with one governing body above them. This is the meaning of coexistence,” he said to raucous applause.Abbas also accused Israel’s current government of discriminating against the Palestinians vis-à-vis the distribution of water, claiming that Israelis are permitted to consume 12 times more water than Palestinians. “We are humans, you need to take a shower, I need to take a shower. You need to drink, I need to drink,” he said. “We are similar, why do you take 12 times more?”The Palestinian leader admitted that anti-Israeli incitement exists and that it needs to be confronted. However, he argued that the Palestinians for years have been willing to discuss incitement in a trilateral committee with the Israelis and the Americans, but that such efforts had failed due to Israeli obstinacy.

“There is incitement on my side, I admit it. I admit it, but let’s discuss it. And the Israelis don’t want to admit it,” he said. In order to talk fairly about incitement, which he said exists on both sides, “a referee” from a third party was needed. “Incitement is a germ that would harm the atmosphere and the desire for peace, so let’s remove it. We want to remove it but we haven’t heard any response” from the Israeli side, he said.

Abbas also responded to claims made last week by Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz, who had called him the world’s worst anti-Semite. ”Not the second or third worst, but the worst anti-Semite,” Abbas said, without mentioning Steinitz’s name. Why? What am I saying? I recognize the state of Israel. Where is the anti-Semitism? I go everywhere around the world. Wherever I go, I meet the Jewish leadership, in New York, AIPAC, Washington DC, London, Paris, South Africa, Latin America, Canada, everywhere. We want to make peace with you, so we meet with everyone. A person who says this about me, frankly, does not want peace.”The PA president also vehemently protested the often-made claim that he denied the Holocaust in his doctorate, lamenting that rumors to that effect continue to be spread by his opponents. “How do I deny the Holocaust? Did you read the book? No. So read the book and see if I have denied the Holocaust. I have written about it and I know that millions of Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.”Abbas also asserted that he would not demand that five million Palestinians refugees and their descendants enter Israel “to destroy” the state, but insisted that the refugee problem needs to be addressed. “All that we said was, come let’s put the refugee question on the table, because refugees is a topic that must be resolved to bring an end to conflict. But we do not seek, and we will not seek, to flood Israel with millions in order to change its social culture. This is nonsense that you read in the Hebrew media and elsewhere,” he said.(Last month, speaking to a group of Palestinians from East Jerusalem, Abbas said that he could not negotiate away the absolute right of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to return to sovereign Israel, and expressed other hard-line positions on core issues.)

During Sunday’s unprecedented meeting of Israel students from across the country, organized by Labor MK Hilik Bar, the chair of the Knesset Caucus for the Promotion of a Solution for the Israeli-Arab Conflict and the One Voice organization, Abbas reiterated his willingness to sign a peace agreement with Israel, but largely insisted on his well-known positions on the core issues. Speaking Sunday night, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Danon facetiously said that the Jewish people “are grateful” to Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas for “recognizing the Jewish right to pray at the Kotel.” Abbas made the comments earlier Sunday, speaking to Israeli students in Ramallah.“We do not need the permission of anyone to pray at the Kotel, certainly not from the Palestinian leadership,” Danon said. “Jews have prayed, Jews pray, and Jews will pray at the Kotel forever.”Besides presenting his views on the Kotel, Abbas also discussed numerous other issues. Abbas said he would never recognize Israel as a Jewish state. “You want to go the UN to change the name of the state, then do so. I only know and recognize Israel, I do not know a 'democratic, Jewish state.'”He also said he would not allow Jews to remain in “Palestine,” and would demand that hundreds of thousands of Jews in Judea and Samaria be forced to move. “We will not equate the Palestinians who have been here for thousands of years with the settlers,” he said.“Why does the government not stop the settlers? They destroy trees and damage peace. “Not only do the settlers steal our land, but they kill us too. One Dead in Akko Gas Tank Explosion

One person killed and at least two others injured in an explosion in a residential building in Akko.

One person was killed and four others were injured in an explosion in a residential building in the old city of Akko on Sunday night.Magen David Adom said that one of the victims was in serious condition, two in moderate condition, and two more in light condition. They were evacuated by ambulance to the hospital in Nahariya.It is believed that the explosion was caused by a gas tank. Part of the building collapsed as a result of the blast, and at least 10 people were trapped inside. Paramedics were able to communicate with those trapped in the building.In a similar incident last month, a couple and their two-year-old baby were killed in a gas tank explosion in Jerusalem.The blast occurred on the third floor of a four storey building in the city’s Gilo neighborhood.A similar incident in Netanya killed four people and wounded 88 in June of 2011.

Thousands Protest Knesset Symbol Change

At least 13,000 people have signed a petition against changing the design of the symbol of the Knesset. The changes are being pushed by Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and several other MKs.Leading the campaign against the changes is David Sela, chairman of the Society for the Preservation of Israeli Heritage Sites. Speaking to Arutz Sheva, Sela said that the Knesset symbol was chosen back in 1949 by a plebiscite. “Now, in order to 'modernize' it for for other reasons, there are people who want to change it,” he said.
Five symbols to replace the current one were chosen as the leading candidates. Edelstein plans to put them up for a vote on the Knesset web site. Sela said that this would be a bad idea, as it would “damage one of the few thing in this country on which there is a consensus.”Over 13,000 people have signed a petition against the changes, including hundreds of well-known public figures. Many people did not just sign, he said, but also added comments expressing their distaste for the proposed changes. Some, in fact, have accused Edelstein of various things which, Sela said, “you would probably not want to share with the audience.”
In 1949, Sela added, a law was instituted to punish anyone who desecrates the symbol of the state (the Menorah and olive branch design). Such a law should apply to the Knesset logo as well, he said.

RAMALLAH — Meetings such as the one Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s held with Israeli students on Sunday merely serve Israeli interests and must be stopped immediately, the Palestinian terror group Hamas said on Sunday.“These meetings are a normalization of relations with Israeli citizens and serve their image in the world,” read a statement from the organization, which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and vehemently opposes normalization or peace talks with Israel. “It is necessary to stop these meetings, which point to the collapse of the Palestinian Authority’s positions,” the group added, according to Maariv.Earlier on Sunday, Abbas told a group of Israeli students visiting his Muqata headquarters in Ramallah that the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their capital but do not seek to divide the city. He also said he did not want to flood Israel with millions of Palestinian refugees.“We don’t want to redivide Jerusalem,” he told the 300 Israeli students and young activists at his presidential compound. “We would leave the city open, and have two municipalities with one governing body above them. This is the meaning of coexistence,” he said to raucous applause.Abbas also accused Israel’s current government of discriminating against the Palestinians when it came to the distribution of water, claiming that Israelis are permitted to consume 12 times more water than Palestinians. “We are humans, you need to take a shower, I need to take a shower. You need to drink, I need to drink,” he said. “We are similar, why do you take 12 times more?”

The Palestinian leader admitted that anti-Israeli incitement exists and that it needs to be confronted. However, he argued that the Palestinians for years have been willing to discuss incitement in a trilateral committee with the Israelis and the Americans, but that such efforts had failed due to Israeli obstinacy.“There is incitement on my side, I admit it. I admit it, but let’s discuss it. And the Israelis don’t want to admit it,” he said. In order to talk fairly about incitement, which he said exists on both sides, “a referee” from a third party was needed. “Incitement is a germ that would harm the atmosphere and the desire for peace, so let’s remove it. We want to remove it but we haven’t heard any response” from the Israeli side, he said.Abbas also responded to claims made last week by Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz, who had called him the world’s worst anti-Semite. ”Not the second or third worst, but the worst anti-Semite,” Abbas said, without mentioning Steinitz’s name. Why? What am I saying? I recognize the state of Israel. Where is the anti-Semitism? I go everywhere around the world. Nasrallah vows victory against Sunni extremists in Syria

Hezbollah leader, a staunch ally of Assad regime, warns that rebels will try to establish Islamic state if they win

BEIRUT – The chief of Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, vowed on Sunday that the group would prevail against extremists fighting in neighboring Syria.“We will win this battle, God willing,” he insisted, after describing the group’s role in the conflict in Syria as a fight against “takfiris” — extremist Sunni Muslims.Hezbollah, a staunch ally of the Syrian regime, has dispatched fighters to the conflict to bolster government troops, finally admitting their presence in April 2013.Nasrallah has regularly defended the decision by saying Hezbollah is countering jihadist fighters, although extremists make up only a portion of those fighting against President Bashar al-Assad.He devoted much of the lengthy address to defending the group’s involvement in Syria, which has drawn accusations from some in Lebanon that the group is entangling the country in the war next door.“It’s a question of time,” he said of Hezbollah’s victory in the fight.

“Planning and preparations… exist, but it’s a question of time,” he added during the televised address to commemorate the assassination of three senior Hezbollah members.He described the fight in Syria, which a Britain-based monitoring group estimates has killed several hundred Hezbollah members, as a “decisive, historic battle.”Hezbollah’s strongholds in Beirut and elsewhere have been targeted in a string of car and suicide bomb attacks that have killed civilians, with jihadist groups saying the blasts are revenge for the Shiite movement’s role in the Syria conflict.

‘Danger threatens all Lebanese’

Nasrallah said the attacks, and others in Syria against religious minorities, proved that the group needed to fight extremism in Syria to protect Lebanon.“If the armed groups control Syria, what will Lebanon’s future be?” he asked.“Where are your priests, where are your nuns, where are your statues of the Virgin Mary?” he added, referring to Syrian priests and nuns kidnapped by extremists, who have also desecrated churches.

“This is a danger that threatens all Lebanese… If they (jihadists) have the opportunity to control the border regions, their goal will be to transform Lebanon into a part of their Islamic state,” he said.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least 275 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in Syria, where they are currently battling rebels in the Qalamun region near the border with Lebanon.Syria’s army, reportedly backed by Hezbollah fighters, has launched operations to seize the last rebel stronghold in the region, the town of Yabrud.Both Hezbollah and the Lebanese army have said several of the car bombs sent into Lebanon have originated in the town.Nasrallah also addressed the formation of a new government this week, after a vacuum of more than 10 months.The government will include both Hezbollah and its allies and the opposition March 14 coalition.But seats will be equally distributed between the two sides and centrist candidates to prevent any group from having a veto over the other.Nasrallah said his party would work with the new government in “a positive spirit” but clarified that it was a “government of national interest, not a unity government.”

Taba terror attack sends dual murderous message

The Islamists’ blast reverberated across the border — a fatal strike on Egyptian tourism, and a symbolic message to Israel

There were, it would seem, two goals to Sunday’s terror attack in Taba, one symbolic, one concrete.The attack, which killed three South Korean tourists and an Egyptian bus driver, was carried out, apparently with a remote-control explosive device, only 100 yards from the border with Israel. The blast, as intended, reverberated across the territorial divide. It was a symbolic reminder to Israelis that the global jihad, once relegated to far flung corners of Somalia, Yemen, and Afghanistan, has taken root in the heart of the Levant, half a day’s drive from the Al-Aqsa Mosque.“It is very hard for them to penetrate into Israel,” said Maj. (res.) Aviv Oreg, formerly the head of Al Qaeda and Global Jihad desk at the IDF’s military intelligence directorate. But for jihadist organizations in the Sinai Peninsula, this sort of attack is ”very sufficient in order to pinpoint that Israel is their target in their aspirations.”More concretely, it targeted tourists on Egyptian soil. Last year, in the wake of president Mohammed Morsi’s ouster and the ongoing attacks in Sinai and the Egyptian mainland, tourist revenue in Egypt dropped by 41 percent. The $10 billion earned in 2012 dwindled to $5.9 billion in 2013, Reuters reported in January. This, the first attack against tourists since Morsi was pried from power, will further cut into the foreign cash flow. It will also push Egypt, and certainly the Sinai Peninsula, one more step in the direction of anarchy, the ecosystem in which terror thrives.

Oreg, who today heads Ceifit, a company that analyzes global jihad threats, suggested two possible perpetrators – the al-Qadea-like Ansar Beit al-Makdis or Majlis Shura al-Mujahedin Fi Aknaf Bayt al-Maqdis, a group that was once based in Gaza, he said, but which was forced to operate in Sinai and to target Israel from there “because it is not convenient for Hamas.”The group more likely responsible, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the most dominant jihadist group in the Sinai, “is very close to al-Qaeda,” Oreg said in a conference call with journalists Sunday evening. So much so that Al Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri has been heard, “in his own voice,” claiming Ansar Beit al-Maqdis attacks.Although Oreg said that not a great deal is known about the terror organization’s “layout and infrastructure,” it is clear that it possesses a vast array of weapons. “They have everything,” he said, including  thousands of mines that can be made into IEDs and advanced missiles that came from Libya after the fall of Muammar Ghaddafi. In late January, the group downed an Egyptian military helicopter, killing all five soldiers onboard. “Name whatever weapons you need, and you can find it in the Sinai Peninsula,” he said.In recent months, ever since Morsi’s ouster, cooperation between Israeli and Egyptian authorities “has been largely enhanced,” Oreg said, moving from the tactical and operational level to the intelligence realm. The Shin Bet, too, has been forced, over the course of the past two years, to realign itself in order to address the growing threats from the Sinai.But, as Oreg noted, there is no foolproof defense and this attack, which may have been largely aimed against General Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and his supporters, will also deter some of the 1.8 million Christians who visit Israel annually, many of whom enter the country via the Sinai Peninsula.

Two days before the start of negotiations designed to ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, Iran on Sunday said it opened a medical center for “nuclear emergencies” at its Natanz uranium enrichment facility.The center was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by several top nuclear officials, Iran’s Fars news agency reported. Among them was Iran’s atomic energy agency deputy head for security and civil defense, Asqar Zare’an.Zare’an later Sunday “also took part in a number of other ceremonies held to mark the start of other nuclear projects, including the launch of nuclear sensor machines,” Fars reported, without further elaboration.The interim deal signed between the world’s P5+1 countries and Iran in Geneva in November allowed Iran to continue low-level enrichment, and US President Barack Obama said in December that he could envisage Iran retaining “some modest enrichment capability” even under a permanent accord. Talks on that permanent accord are to begin in Vienna on Tuesday. The Geneva deal provides for daily inspection at Natanz by the International Atomic Energy Agency.Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu castigated the Geneva accord as a “historic mistake” because it allowed Iran to continue to enrich uranium, and did not tackle weaponization and other aspects of the rogue Iranian nuclear program. A permanent accord, Netanyahu has said, must ensure the complete dismantling of Iran’s “military nuclear” capabilities. Netanyahu has threatened to act alone if necessary to prevent Iran attaining nuclear weapons.Iran has threatened to strike back at Israel and the US in the event of any attack on its nuclear facilities. On February 7, Iranian state TV ran a documentary featuring a computerized video of Iran’s drones and missiles bombing Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ben-Gurion Airport and the Dimona nuclear reactor in a simulated retaliation for a hypothetical Israeli or American strike on the Islamic Republic. The clip also showed simulated attacks on American targets in the region, including an aircraft-carrier.Earlier Sunday, in the latest of a series of belligerent statements ahead of the nuclear talks, the commander of Iran’s Army ground forces on Sunday declared that the US is heading for collapse. Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan was also quoted by Fars warning Washington against any military action against Iran.Last week, Iran’s chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi warned the Islamic republic’s foes that Iran was prepared for a “decisive battle” if attacked.And Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that the West should not have any delusions about using a military option. “I say explicitly, if some have delusions of having any threats against Iran on their tables, they need to wear new glasses. There is no military option against Iran on any table in the world,” he said.

Grand Rabbi of Lev Tahor left Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec on last Thursday, February 6, 2014, after his apartment in Chatham became ready to move in.The Grand Rabbi has remained in Quebec during the relocation of the community. Only the families with children within school age have left during that period.

My experience in starting a rally to support human rights

I run a Facebook group called Cupcakes to Restore Humanity. I created the group as a method of repairing my faith in humanity. The group is a place where members can come if they need help with virtually anything. I remember shortly after the group was created it hit 20 members and I went to bed feeling very proud. When I woke up I was astonished to see 80 members overnight. The group now has almost 600 members! By doing so I am now labelled “the cupcake guy”. I knew the group was going to be a success when I realized my front room was continuously filled with donations and I was continuously driving around picking these donations up.A short time ago I was involved in a debate about the “Jewish Taliban”. I could not believe some of the things people could say about a group we knew virtually nothing about. This isn’t the Chatham I know, what happened to us? A few other members felt the same as I did and we decided that we should stand up and show support and welcome the members of the Lev Tahor to our community. After speaking with a few people and gathering ideas we decided on a peace rally. The goal is to try to get the community to understand the members of the Lev Tahor and not assume who they are based on media. The others from cupcakes to restore are great people with huge hearts. They have ideas and we put those ideas to work. We decided on the peace rally, hoping to achieve:

• respect for the Lev Tahor
• protecting rights that are being violated

My first time meeting a Lev Tahor member was with Uriel Goldman and Mayer Rosner. My knowledge of the group wasn’t the greatest and I was unsure of what to expect. I remember sending Goldman a text message to set up the meeting then asking myself,”does he even text?”. Sure enough I got a response he was excited to meet me and thankful I contacted him. When I drove out to meet with him I met Rosner in the office he informed me that Goldman was in the school and that he too would be joining us. When Goldman came up he had a plate full of kosher desserts. He offered me some saying “it’s not cupcakes but they are alright, not good either but alright”, followed by a laugh and a smile. We entered his office and began to discuss my intention to hold a demonstration. When I told him the ideas our group had, Goldman was happily surprised to see more and more people supporting them. He told me how he is amazed every day how people stop out at Spurgeon’s Villa to lend support.

Setting A Date

My concern with the rally was I did not have Lev Tahor input. They love the idea and not only because it is for them. Goldman mentioned, “It is a great idea because it is a positive message.” During the meeting, which was during school hours, I could hear children in the next room singing songs and learning from their teacher. Goldman insisted we join in the classroom to see how the children are taught. I declined not wanting to intrude. I could hear the children were busy and what sounded like fun laughing and singing songs. After getting the support from Lev Tahor members, I decided on a date of February 25th between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., in front of the Chatham courthouse at 425 Grand Avenue West.I created the event page and that is when the fun started. I had a few followers and plenty of negative feedback as well. I didn’t realize how hard it would be defending humans rights. That’s the one thing we are all born with, yet for the members of the Lev Tahor it seemed the community didn’t believe they deserved rights. I was torn between feeling the need to help the community understand or just letting people shame a whole community based on what they thought they knew of them from media stories.

Online Comments Discouraging

I decided to push forward and soon enough the attention was getting bigger. A reporter contacted me and released a story. When it first appeared I was thinking this is awesome, now people can be aware. That was quickly rerouted once some negativity began. People started making outlandish claims based on what they had heard in the media. I was shocked how people just hear or read something and automatically call it truth. I thought our society was stronger than that. After reading some comments and feeling pretty discouraged, I decided this isn’t who I am. I can’t sit back and let these claims linger as truth. I started replying back to some of the comments and quickly realized I have more support outside of the group than I initially thought. That and a few encouraging messages sent to me privately once again restored my faith in humanity.My response to the negativity is: The rally is for human rights. My initial goal was to avoid all allegations towards the group no matter how far-fetched that seemed. The purpose is to protect what they/we are entitled to. Through my group Cupcakes to Restore Humanity I have seen so much compassion from others that it is absolutely amazing. I want to extend that compassion to all groups of people. I know most of you have made up your minds about the Lev Tahor based on media reports. I expected some negativity out of this. I’m not the soft type of guy and this started out as, with a ‘lets see if we can help’ approach. During this process I have learned to be more and more compassionate, even typing this I’m holding back emotion. Which is hard as my heart weeps to the children, mothers, fathers and other group members. I weep for Chatham-Kent but most of all I weep for you Canada. If this groups’ rights can be violated so drastically, then living as Canadians that means you are just as much at risk in having your rights violated. There is no proof or evidence of child abuse and this group has been investigated for 18 months. They found no issues other than the education, which is why they came to Ontario. Educational issues that are the same as many people complained about in the Ontario school curriculum; including sexual education to grade one students. People stood up and said, “Wait a minute, that’s too young.” You had a right to stand up for how your child is educated. So why don’t they?

Human Rights Apply To Everyone

I want people to understand that this is about human rights that we all have and are entitled to. Please do not base your outlook on this group based on media reports about the Lev Tahor. We all have the right to free thought. I encourage all of us to use it. We are not programmable drones.Let’s heal Canada by healing the issues within ourselves. That is the only way to protect the children. I will continue pushing forward, despite the negativity, as I stand up for what I believe is the most humane approach. As one member of the group, Lisa Smith has said, “Please try to keep an open mind to all this. I know its hard to forget what you have read and heard from media, but you know the old saying ‘you tell two friends and they tell two friends’ and so on. Stay open-minded.” I agree with her. I believe an open mind is the key to an open heart. I encourage all of you to join the event. Lev Tahor sect under police investigation since 2012

Quebec’s provincial police force has been investigating the LevTahor community for nearly two years, according to search warrants obtained by CBC and other media outlets that fought to have the documents made public.The documents are heavily redacted and provide no information as to the nature of the criminal infractions cited as a cause for the warrants — which led to a raid being carried out at two homes in Chatham, Ont., on Jan. 29.It’s also not public what was seized at the homes.
However, the documents say the Sûreté du Québec has been investigating Lev Tahor members since April 2012 – after receiving information alleging physical abuse of children and unlawful confinement of minors. It was also alleged that  underage girls were being forced to marry much older men.The allegations, which were never cross-examined in court, have not resulted in charges and members of the Lev Tahor group have always maintained they are false.According to the documents released Friday, the SQ opened an investigation in May 2012 and began interviewing witnesses.A young woman hospitalized in the Laurentians told hospital staff that she had been sexually abused.SQ reports also include allegations that children from other countries were brought to Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., to be married.Former members of the sect told police they lied to immigration officials to get them in the country.The police documents also allege children were medicated, and hit with belts, crowbars and whips.LevTahor leaders told CBC News Friday they were aware that their community was under police investigation since 2012 — and they have nothing to hide.“They said a lot of allegations, and we said, ‘No problem. You want to investigate, we have no problem with that,’” said Uriel Goldman, a spokesman for the sect.“Investigate, but please, we ask if you don’t find [anything], close the files and leave us alone.”Dozens of LevTahorfamiles living in Ste-Agathe-des-Montspacked up their belongings in November, and moved in the middle of the night to Chatham, Ont.Two families were supposed to appear in court the following day to respond to allegations of child neglect.Lev Tahor leaders said members of the sect didn’t run away, claiming the move was planned long ago. The leaders say they co-operated with youth protection services officials in Quebec, even after moving to Ontario.A few days after the move, a youth court ordered the temporary removal of 14 children from the sect, at the request of youth protection services.An Ontario court upheld that decision earlier this month for 13 of the 14 children. However, the court gave the sect 30 days to appeal the decision.

The founder of a local human rights Facebook group is hoping to show members of the Lev Tahor Jewish community there are local people who support them.Dave Formosa is organizing a Lev Tahor community peace rally on Feb. 25, near the Chatham-Kent Court House, from 1-3 p.m.

“It basically came about through Facebook,” he told The Chatham Daily News, noting there were posts on another Facebook group about a local resident who expressed negative experiences being a neighbour of members of the group.“That kind of brought on a lot of disrespect towards their community,” he said.Formosa, who founded the Facebook group, Cupcakes to Restore Humanity, said a posting about how one of the Jewish members was spat on by someone while shopping prompted him to take action.“That . . . kind of hit a soft spot for a lot of people,” he said. Controversy has swirled around the Jewish community since it arrived in Chatham in late November, from Quebec, just a few days before a child protection hearing was to take place. A Chatham judge recently ruled child welfare officials have the right to seize 13 children from the ultra-orthodox group and put them into temporary foster care in Quebec.Formosa said he met with members of Lev Tahor recently to ask how they would feel about a peace rally.Despite all the accusations about the group, Formosa said the message he received is “they can't believe all the support that Chatham is giving them.”Uriel Goldman, a Lev Tahor community organizer, said everyday people offer “good words,” adding he is approached by people everywhere from the doctor's office and bank to the grocery and gas station.“It's really, really nice that people understand . . . we really appreciate that,” he said.Mayer Rosner, a director with Lev Tahor, said the group has nothing to do with organizing the rally. He appreciates that people understand the heartbreak they are experiencing.He added people understand their feelings even though they are not of the same religion or look the same, and live a different lifestyle.“They're giving us a right to exist and taking the time to show support, it gives a very good feeling to us,” Rosner said.Formosa said, “basically, all we're trying to do right now is get people to understand that they are people, just like everyone else.”

He said Feb. 25 is the date members of Lev Tahor will be at the court house filing an appeal to prevent the children being returned to Quebec. He added at that time, members of Lev Tahor plan on thanking those in attendance at the rally for their support.
