Israel approves 1,400 new housing units over Green Line

Most of the construction planned for settlements across West Bank; Lapid, Herzog criticize development

The Ministry of Housing and Construction announced Friday that it had approved tenders for 1,400 new housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.According to Ministry spokesman Arik Ben Shimon, 801 units were approved for West Bank settlements, including 227 in Efrat, 169 in Elkana and 40 in Ariel.

In addition, Karnei Shomron would see an additional 86 units, Alfei Menashe 78, Adam 75, Beiter Illit 24, and Emanuel 102.The Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, over the Green Line, would see another 600 units built.Friday’s announcement had been expected after Israel released 26 long-serving Palestinian prisoners in late December, part of a deal made last summer when Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously issued similar construction announcements to blunt criticism at home of prisoner releases, as many of those released were convicted of killing Israeli civilians and soldiers.This time, the announcement was apparently postponed until after a visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was in the region last week.Kerry has been pushing a framework agreement, as part of his efforts to nudge Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Netanyahu closer to a full treaty that would establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel.Finance Minister Yair Lapid decried the announcement, calling it “empty.”“This is not only a bad idea,” he said, “but is also one that Yesh Atid will do everything it can to ensure it remains only a bad idea that is not carried out.”Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog also attacked the announcement, tying it to the recent release of Palestinian prisoners as part of ongoing negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.Herzog said that Netanyahu could have chosen to freeze settlement construction instead of freeing prisoners, which Herzog called “immoral,” but the prime minister would not compromise on building settlements.“The prisoner release was turned into a real estate deal,” said Herzog.The Palestinian Authority also came out strongly against the move.“This shows Israel’s clear commitment to the destruction of peace and imposition of an Apartheid system,” said chief Palestinian negotiator Seab Erekat, according to a statement released by the PLO negotiating team.“The recent announcement by the Israeli government of new settlements in occupied State of Palestine is a slap to Mr. Kerry’s efforts and a clear message by Israel’s Prime Minister: ‘Don’t continue with your peace efforts,” the statement continued.“We call on the United States and the rest of the international community to exert further efforts to halt the Israeli plans which aims to destroy the chances for the two state solution.”In addition, another 532 units that had been approved for construction in the past, but did not attract offers from builders, are to be put back on the market. The units are to be situated in the neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze’ev, Ramot, and Neve Yaakov, all of which sit over the Green Line.In November, the Housing and Construction Ministry announced that it had approved the sale of land for some 1,700 apartments over the Green Line, including some 700 new apartments in Jerusalem and 1,030 in Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The Ministry said then that the announcement was in keeping with its policy of approving increased housing construction as a measure to help reduce the cost of housing nationwide.The policy “has led to fast growth in construction starts that now stands at an annual rate of 43,000 [new] apartments, higher than the demand for new apartments each year,” according to Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel.Ariel promised to further increase the rate of construction of new apartments “throughout the country… in order to bring about a dramatic change in the cost of apartments.”Ariel is a senior member of the Jewish Home party.

The plan for Francis’ pilgrimage to the Holy Land is beginning to take shape. A delegation representing the Community of Sant’Egidio has commemorated the historic meeting between Paul VI and Athenagoras 50 years ago

Andrea Tornielli jerusalem The ecumenical meeting in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre has been set for 25 May and will in all likelihood take place before the empty tomb. “This is a really important event, especially bearing in mind where it is taking place; a place in which divisions between Christians are in some way encrypted. It is also important because all Christian denominations present in the Holy Land will be there,” said Valeria Martano, who is part of a delegation of the Community of Sant’Egidio currently in Jerusalem to commemorate the 50^th anniversary of the embrace between Paul VI and Athenagoras.Pope Francis and Bartholomew, who are guests of the Orthodox metropolitan in Jerusalem, could enter the Basilica together and embrace one another before meeting the representatives of other rites, for example, Catholics, Orthodox, Armenians, Copts, Ethiopians and Anglicans. “The climate set by the meeting which took place between Paul VI and the Patriarch of Constantinople half a century ago was different,” Valeria Martano told Vatican Insider. Martano is the author of the documented biography on Athenagoras, titled Athenagoras the Patriarch (1886-1972). A Christian caught between the crisis of cohabitation and ecumenical utopia. We often focus on how much work is yet to be done and lose sight of the things that have been achieved. I think Francis’ meeting with Bartholomew I will be an epiphany of communion and a new opportunity for a wider and more inclusive embrace…”Martano added that Paul VI’s historic pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1964, “made the Orthodox world realise how willing Catholics were to move the focus back to the Church of Jerusalem. With the visit to the Holy Land, the first visit he has decided on himself - last July’s World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro had already been planned by Benedict XVI - Francis is showing once again that Rome’s focus if moving back to the very roots of the Gospel, starting from the empty sepulchre.As Francis confirmed last Sunday, the three legs of his journey will be Amman, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. A few more details have been revealed about the trip which is still being planned. Despite the initial controversy over the brief duration of the pilgrimage (which is only going to last 3 days, as Paul VI’s did back in 1964) this seems to have been dispelled, partly because everyone has now understood the spirit of the visit. The Pope will arrive in Amman, where he is expected to dine with some Syrian refugees. On Sunday morning he will leave Jordan by helicopter and head for the territories under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian National Authority, to celebrate a mass in Bethlehem. “The Sant’Egidio delegation, myself included, have been in contact with the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Jewish world has expressed its appreciation regarding the Pope’s decision to come on a Sunday and not on the Shabbhat,” Martano said. 
Francis is expected to leave Bethlehem by helicopter and fly to Tel Aviv airport. From here he will make his way to Jerusalem for the much awaited ecumenical meeting on Sunday afternoon. This meeting will be the highlight of the whole trip and is the only event the Pope specifically referred to when he announced his visit. Efforts are being made to organise a meeting with Jewish religious leaders in the old Rabbinate building near the Western Wall.

Bishops call for peace in the Central African Republic

The Central African Republic's Bishops’ Conference has presented 23 proposals for exiting the crisis. These include favouring UN intervention, disarming the militia, organizing new elections and reviewing the nation’s relations with neighbouring Chad

Davide Demichelis Rome  “For a united and peaceful Central African Republic.”  The Central African Republic has issued a powerful document encompassing the reflections of each of the country’s ten bishops.“We urgently need to form a new Republican army, plan elections, establish a commission of inquiry to shed light on human rights violations and disarm the militia” that are spreading terror across the country. The bishops listed as many as 23 key points for bringing the country out of the crisis, with an emphasis on the need “to disarm and repatriate the Chadian and Sudanese mercenaries” who were the first to invade the Central African Republic and spark disorder a little over a year ago. Intervention from the UN’s Blue Helmets is required to ensure a return to peaceful co-existence, the resumption of dialogue and the encouragement of tolerance and forgiveness. The national Bishops’ Conference also underlined the need to review “relations with neighbouring countries, especially Chad.”Only this will “recreate the right conditions for peaceful co-existence.” The foreign communities present in the country were largely evacuated. Bishops emphasised how devastating it was to see brothers and sisters who had been living in the country for decades leave. It is also discouraging hearing our fellow countrymen saying they want to leave their homeland.The crisis that is putting the Central African Republic to the test “has exposed our limits and our inability to resolve our problems on our own.” In the document issued by the Central African Republic’s Bishops’ Conference the country’s bishops express their gratitude to the Central African Multinational Force (FOMAC and MISCA) and to the French armed forces that intervened to guarantee peace. But now the Bishops’ Conference is once again focusing its attention on Chad, pointing out that “certain incidents highlight the ambiguity of the role played by Chadian forces in this international Force.”  But looking ahead, “the crisis cannot be resolved without the efforts of the men and women of the Central African Republic. In fact, the real battles that  need to be fought are in fields of development, economic revival, poverty, extreme poverty and impunity.”The clashes between Seleka militiamen and the anti-balaka self defence groups have dragged the country “into a spiral of revenge and counter-revenge which has been keeping civilians hostage,” the nation’s bishops said. Finally, they criticised once again those who mistakenly interpret these clashes as religious wars: “We would like to reiterate that not all those who are anti-balaka are Christians and not all Christians are anti-balaka. The same goes for Muslims and Seleka militia. National and international media tend to give a denominational slant to a crisis that is above all political and military.”

1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

(Reuters) - IranRussia and Russia are negotiating an oil-for-goods swap worth $1.5 billion a month that would let Iran lift oil exports substantially, in defiance of Western sanctions that helped force Tehran to agree a preliminary deal to end its nuclear program.Russian and Iranian sources close to the barter negotiations said final details were in discussion for a deal that would see Moscow buy up to 500,000 barrels a day of Iranian oil in exchange for Russian equipment and goods."Good progress is being made at the moment with strong chances of success," said a Russian source. "We are discussing the details and the date of signing a deal depends on those details." The Kremlin declined comment."Our desire is to sign the deal as soon as possible," said a senior Iranian official, who declined to be named. Open Doors NGO reports sharp increase in anti-Christian violence

Open Doors ranks North Korea as top persecutor of Christians, followed by Somalia and Syria in its 2014 World Watch List. Meanwhile, Africa is beginning to feature more prominently among the 50 countries where the risk of persecution is highest

Giorgio Bernardelli Rome Over the course of the past year, persecution against Christians has increased across the whole world and Africa is gradually becoming “a battlefield for Christian Churches” too. This was revealed by the 2014 World Watch List, the annual report on the state of anti-Christian violence across the world, introduced in 1997 by international evangelical NGO Open Doors.Research is based on the monitoring of fifty countries where Christians are believed to face the highest risk of persecution. Each country scores points based on various criteria such as news regarding single acts of violence, the daily repression experienced by faithful through laws or acts of intimidation which prevent the exercise of religious freedom. Korea ranked top of the list of countries that are most hostile towards Christians for the twelfth year running. It is the only country where the persecution level is “absolute”. It is followed by another twelve countries where the persecution level is “extreme”. Topping this list is Somalia (which moved from fifth to second place), followed by Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, the Maldives, Pakistan, Iran and Yemen. 
But ranking aside, what Open Doors was keen to draw attention to was the overall worsening of the situation of Christians in the world: twelve months ago, all fifty countries put together scored a total of 2683 points. This year, this figure has shot to 3019. In other words, it is as if the global situation has worsened by 12, 5%.Another clear trend that has emerged is Africa’s increasingly prominent presence on the persecution map: Somalis is not the only country that has seen a surge in violence. The Central African Republic, a country which until last year showed no signs of a need for monitoring now ranks 16^th in the list of countries where faith has the highest cost. The ongoing civil war is partly to do with this. 18 African countries feature in the Open Doors list of 50 countries where the risk of anti-Christian persecution is highest and there are 36 countries where Islamic radicalism is responsible for the persecution of Christians.In the twelve months accounted for in the Open Doors World Watch List, 2123 Christians were killed and 1044 violent persecution cases were recorded. Not surprisingly, the highest number of victims was recorded in Syria (1213), followed by Nigeria (612), while the highest number of violent attacks was recorded in Egypt (167 cases), followed by India (125) and Nigeria (118).Open Doors draws attention to the fact that one of the fifty countries being monitored is Colombia. Colombia’s Christians are certainly not a minority but Open Doors has ranked them 25^th in the list of countries where persecution is classed as “severe”, because of the lootings and murders against those who oppose the rebel guerrillas and other criminal activities. Meanwhile, China comes 30^th and has been included in the list of countries where persecution is “moderate”.

As he has done on a couple of occasions before, the Pope asked those present whether they remembered the date of their baptism and gave them a piece of advice.  Or rather a "task". Spain’s King Juan Carlos has been bombarded with a series of problems, causing many Spaniards to question if now is the time for him to abdicate the throne, a report inquires.

Spaniards are asking whether or not Juan Carlos - who has been hit with ongoing health issues and royal scandals - should step down as King of Spain, AFP posited in a Wednesday report.An opinion poll has revealed that a majority of people in Spain disapprove of Juan Carlos, with experts saying the King has lost touch with the problems of the country.“The next four, five, six months will be key to the path the monarchy takes. Either these problems are forgotten or by the summer we will have an abdication. Ink spillage causes ‘red river’ in Northampton

Published on the 06 JanuaryAn large ink spillage has been identified as the cause of why a river in Northampton turning red.
Following an investigation by the Environment Agency and Anglian Water, it is believed that the waterway near to the A43 in Moulton turned red last Thursday due to a quantity of red ink.Pep Finn-Scinaldi, aged 28, of Thorplands, took pictures of the watercourse when he saw the water was a deep red colour.Mr Finn-Scinaldi said he walked along the stream, which runs towards the Round Spinney roundabout, as far as he could and the water was bright red all the way along.He said: “At first I thought something had died as it looked like blood but when it was all the way along we said it must have been a whale to create that much blood.

“It could have been paint but it must have been a hell of a lot of paint to make it that red.”A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We have worked with Anglian Water to trace the source of the red colouration through the surface water drains.“As a result, we found the source to be a spillage of red ink.
“The water has returned to its natural colour and, apart from the discolouration, we do not believe there were any negative environmental effects.”

Fukushima failure: Decontamination system stops functioning

The operator of the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) has stopped using its systems to decontaminate radioactive water at the facility, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.The Advanced Liquid Processing System, or ALPS, has been utilized to liquidate radioactive substances from contaminated water stored at the plant.The crane to get rid of the container from the ALPS ceased working on Tuesday.On Wednesday, TEPCO stopped operating all 3 ALPS systems at the facility. The company officials say the system may take a long time to restart.The container where the radioactive substances are stored has to be replaced when it fills up.TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi plant, crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, said that the company plans to decontaminate all radioactive water stored in the tanks by March 2015, NHK reported.That’s despite the company officials telling The Japan Times a month ago that the radioactive water will be decontaminated by the end of fiscal 2014.It’s not the first time that the ALPS system has experienced trouble: at the beginning of December, the system was reported to have broken down during trial operations.The Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) consists of 14 steel cylinders, through which the contaminated water is filtered. After the filtering, waste materials like the absorbent and remaining sludge are transferred to high-integrity containers (HICs) that are transported to a temporary storage facility.The ALPS can remove 62 different types of radionuclides, including strontium and cobalt from contaminated water.The year has started off badly for the Fukushima Daiichi plant: a few days ago, a Japanese worker, who participated in the mending of the plant to avoid further radiation leaks, has revealed that adhesive tape had been used to deal with the issue of sealing in radioactive water.The 48 year-old, Yoshitatsu Uechi, an auto mechanic and tour-bus driver, was one of the 17 workers to be sent to the crippled facility to make more containers to store the contaminated water.
On New Year’s Day, plumes of strange steam rose from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, with TEPCO failing to provide details on the emissions of steam – in all probability radioactive.On the international scene, the picture hasn’t been very bright, either.At the end of 2013, a video emerged showing a beach in California, displaying seemingly high radiation levels on the coast. However, local health officials told residents not to worry, after they had carried out an investigation into the matter.Plus, over the last year, around 130 Japanese cars have been denied access to the Russian border over radiation concerns. The consumer watchdog agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has pointed out that the strict control of all cargo arriving from Japan will continue in 2014.

Government, Media Cover Up Fukushima Radiation Wave Hitting US

Radiation hot spots are popping up around the United States thousands of percentages higher than ‘background radiation’, mutated wildlife is being found dead on the same West Coast beaches where increased radiation levels have been documented by independent researchers and the Fukushima TEPCO plant workers have been caught using duct tape to fix their nuclear equipment. But according to both the Japanese and United States governments, these events mean absolutely nothing.In fact, you must be a conspiracy theorist if you fail to believe the official story that it was likely red-painted utensils that led to a spike in documented radiation levels along the California coast (yes, the government actually offered this up as an official answer). And you must absolutely be a conspiracy theorist if you have the gall to actually look back to late 2011, when researchers presented their findings regarding the impending wave of Fukushima radiation that was already being recorded within the country.Information going back to 2011 shows that scientists were already concerned about an increase in radiation levels and the overall fallout from the delapidated Fukushima plant. We can even go back to the declaration by scientist Marco Kaltofen of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute that radioactive ‘hot particles’ had been found at 2 out of the 3 radiation monitoring stations in Boston. As you are likely aware, hot particles are microscopic pieces of radioactive material that can absolutely wreak havoc on your body via the deliverance of concentrated radiation.
And these particles, according to Kaltofen, were already being found in Boston as far back as 2011.
Now enter a new flurry of stories that have seemingly been popping up one after another as radiation levels are continually being monitored around the nation — namely the West Coast, where the bulk of Fukushima-linked scenarios have been documented. In what sounds like an apocalyptic plot for the latest thriller film, we have mutated whales now washing up dead on the West Coast in the first ever documented case of conjoined gray whale calves. We even have elevated radiation readings as far away as St. Louis, Missouri.
Coincidentily, of course, this is happening at the same time that radiation hot spots exceeding a 1,400% increase over ‘normal’ levels are being reported by researchers. It’s even happening at the same time that similar 500% increases have been disregarded by government officials who admit they have no idea what’s going on but fervently deny any connection to Fukushima in any capacity whatsoever. In fact, that has always been the mantra of these government health officials: We have no idea what’s really going on, but it’s definitely not Fukushima! Because just as the Japanese government has assured its citizens that Fukushima is perfectly safe and poses no real threat to your health while secretly reviewing studies that reveal the plant released massively more radiation than admitted and led to 78% of the radioactive waste being dumped into the Pacific Ocean, the United States government would much rather silently purchase 14 million doses of potassium iodide than tell you that there may be some cause for concern.The very core of the Fukushima disaster timeline that has been regurgitated by the mainstream media and government agencies alike was almost exclusively based on information provided by plant operator TEPCO — a company that is now on record as having lied to the population of the world in a major way. And there were no signs they would ever tell the truth unless forced to. It wasn’t until an independent investigation revealed the actual levels of radiation released from the plant (around 2 1/2 times more than TEPCO would even admit) that TEPCO was forced to go on record and state that the radiation levels they released were indeed much lower than reality.However, the independent investigation into Fukushima radiation levels not only exposed the lies by TEPCO regarding the radiation explosion at the plant, but it also found that around 78% of the caesium-137 released by the plant was funneling into the Pacific Ocean. The plant now states that the three reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant released about 900,000 terabecquerels of radioactive substances. About 20% fell on Japanese land, 2% somewhere on land outside the country, and a whopping 78% remainder is believed to have entered the Pacific Ocean.At the very least, the Japanese and United States governments should be preparing citizens for what scientists said could last ‘thousands of years’: the Fukushima nightmare. And that begins with admitting that the threat is real. Because unless we really prepare ourselves and work together as a planet to truly fix the Fukushima plant and ensure that the 1,4000+ rods do not cause yet another massive meltdown (as experts say they likely will during transfer), we really will be facing a radioactive nightmare of epic proportions.

1400% Radiation Hot Spot Found on San Francisco Beach

Following reports of abnormally high radiation readings on a beach in San Francisco, experts have discovered radiation hot spots measuring 1,400 per cent above normal background levels, although they are keen to stress there is no link to Fukushima.

As we reported on Monday, after a viral video emerged showing a man recording measurements of over 150 micro-REM per hour, 500 per cent normal background radiation, on a beach south of Pillar Point Harbor, San Mateo County officials confirmed the spike but said they were “befuddled” as to the cause.

In a new development, El Granada electrical engineer Steven Weiss, a 40 year veteran designer of Geiger counters, took his own measurements and found hot spots that were returning levels 14 times normal background radiation.“It’s not normal. I’ve never seen 400 cpm when I just wave my Geiger around.” Weiss told the Half Moon Bay Review. “There has to be something radioactive for it to do that.”After studying a dirt sample in a spectrum analyzer, the substance was found to contain radium and thorium, which are both naturally occurring radioactive elements. No evidence of cesium-137, the fissile material used in the Fukushima reactors, was discovered, leading Weiss to conclude that the radiation had no link to the nuclear plant in Japan.“There are reports that a pipeline was once at this location and oil pipelines can collect heavy radioactive minerals,” said Dan Sythe, CEO for International Medcom, which designs and manufactures Geiger Counters, adding that babies and young children should be kept away from the beach, “to make sure they don’t inhale or eat the sand.”Many were concerned that the radiation could be related to Fukushima because experts have concluded that the radioactive plume from the nuclear accident in March 2011 will reach U.S. coastal waters by early 2014.As non-scientists, it remains difficult to ascertain the true threat posed by the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Opinion seems to be polarized, with some saying it represents a dire threat to humanity while others, mainly those in positions of authority, downplaying the issue as completely harmless.The truth must obviously lie somewhere in between, but constant efforts to mislead the public on behalf of both Japanese government and TEPCO officials by lying about the true scale of the radiation release has only stoked suspicion. Pearson airport weather delays spill into 2nd day

Airport to hold staff 'debrief' to examine what went wrong as weather left passengers in limbo

An official at Toronto's Pearson International Airport says staff will have a "debrief" to see what could have been done to mitigate yesterday's extensive delays that left passengers waiting for hours on planes and at luggage carousels.Toby Lennox, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority's vice-president of marketing and stakeholder relations, spoke about the delays on CBC's Metro Morning on Wednesday, as travellers face more turmoil at the airport related to the extremely cold weather.Lennox told host Matt Galloway that GTAA staff will examine what improvements can be made."I've listened to the comments of travellers and I really do feel for them."Thousands of passengers arriving Tuesday morning waited hours — in some cases as many as five hours — for their planes to reach the gate, then hours more to claim their luggage. Some left the airport without their bags while unclaimed luggage covered the floor in some arrival areas.The problem caused airport officials to issue a ground stop order early Tuesday to help deal with the backlog in processing arriving flights. The order prevents new flights from arriving. The ground stop was lifted just after 10 a.m.
The delays happened after overnight temperatures hit –25 C. Lennox said the cold weather caused equipment to ice up. It also meant more flights were diverted to Pearson, leaving the airport "overwhelmed" by incoming flights.Passengers who spoke to CBC repeatedly complained about a lack of information updates. Another common complaint was a lack of staff on the ground to help answer questions about connecting flights and baggage.Lennox said he expects communication will be a focus of the debrief.
"We could have done a better job with respect to the communications to passengers," he said. "It's an enormously complicated situation. There were far more arrivals then we could handle at the time due to the extreme weather."Everything started to slow down and ice up more than we expected."

More delays expected

Galloway asked Lennox if the airlines considered unloading passengers from the planes onto buses to get them into the terminal quickly. He said the airlines opted not to do this because it can be a slow and unpleasant process in cold, windy weather."The air carriers decided to leave the passengers where they are safe and warm," he said.Wednesday won't be a normal travel day due to fallout from yesterday's extensive delays and cancellations caused by freezing temperatures.As thousands of people are still trying to re-book flights, the airport authority issued a message on Twitter just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, warning passengers there could be a "slow startup" on Wednesday.Morning start up will be slow this morning, but airfield is operational - pls check your flight status with your airline.— Toronto Pearson (@TorontoPearson) January 8, 2014

As of 6 a.m. ET, the GTAA website reported that about 400 flights operating out of Pearson had been cancelled. About 20 per cent of scheduled departures had also been cancelled.

Passengers turn to ground transportation

On Tuesday evening, some passengers unable to book new flights were arranging ground transportation to other airports, where they have a better chance of catching a flight."We are thinking of renting a car and driving back to Halifax," frustrated passenger Fernando Salazar told CBC News. "We can't get a flight until Friday."Photos showed unclaimed passenger luggage clogging up floor space near carousels.One man who spoke to CBC News found his bag among the thousands piled on the floor."I decided to take one last look. I got lucky," he said. "Someone could easily have nabbed it."Passengers are encouraged to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Monday morning, the mercury in southern Mississippi flopped to a frosty 19 degrees. In northeast Montana, the temperature plummeted to minus 26. Residents in cities along the Great Lakes woke to subzero temperatures with wind chills much worse.Americans across large stretches of the country greeted the first Monday of the new year with far-below-average readouts on their weather gadgets of choice.“Average sounds pretty good right about now,” says Jason Schaver, of Clinton, Iowa, where temperatures tumbled to 17 below zero — 40 below if you count wind chill. It's all caused by what meteorologists are dubbing a "polar vortex," or a massive southbound weather system.Yahoo News asked residents in some of the more frigid areas to share their cold-snap experiences. Below are lightly edited excerpts from stories they submitted today.

CHICAGO — Snow has fallen in the city over the past week and, on Sunday, we got another three and a half inches on top of the previous accumulations. Even before the negative highs came around today, the temperature was only 3 degrees when my daughter and I had to hunt for a parking spot in the snow and walk several blocks back to our apartment Sunday night.Even bundled in cold weather attire, my daughter cried the entire way inside. By the time we were in the warmth of our home, my fingertips and toes felt like they had been smashed in a door. Even this morning they are still sore from the exposure to the cold.
Traveling side streets in Chicago during this weather is risky. Many of the streets haven't been plowed. I saw many cars getting stuck in snowdrifts on the streets in the Lakeview neighborhood, an added danger in these temperatures.Those living in and around the city can now say they have experienced Chicago's lowest temperature on record Monday morning. The minus 17 reading surpassed the 1988 record of minus 14. This is far from Chicago's average January high of 32 and low of 18 degrees. The dangerous arctic blast has closed down the Chicago Public Schools, and has put a health warning in effect to keep people indoors.

CLINTON, Iowa — The first thing I heard this morning when my alarm went off was the sound of the weatherman saying it was minus 17. Then he followed that by saying it was minus 40 with the wind chill. He then advised us that when the wind chill is that low, exposed skin can easily get frostbite in just five minutes.
My hometown hasn't seen temperatures like this since, well, 2009, according to the Clinton Herald. That day was Jan. 15, when the temp was minus 24.I had a feeling that my normally reliable 2004 Chevy Cavalier wouldn't want to start today. And it didn't. So I had to call off work.It was so cold out that even our dog, Wilfred, wanted no part of going outside this morning. He's a 12-year-old Bernese mountain dog mix. This breed of dog can endure pretty much any weather. That he didn't want to be outside for more than a few minutes was enough proof for me that it was going to be a horrible day in the River Cities.Last week we got snow four out of five days. This week we have arctic recording-breaking temps. Average temps for this time of year are in the upper 20s.Average sounds pretty good right about now.— Jason Schaver

Uncharacteristically cold weather stuns southern Arkansas
TEXARKANA, Ark. — Wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts during winter months is one of the perks of living in the South, particularly in Texarkana. On Monday, Arkansas truly tasted winter weather. The temperature this morning was 16, rising to around 19 by 10 a.m.I’m the father of three young boys, and I bundled them up this morning not unlike Ralphie's little brother in “A Christmas Story.” Usually a jacket and possibly some mittens are in order because the weather takes a turn for the warmer in the afternoon. However, the cruel temperatures made me perhaps a bit overcautious. After dressing the boys in their regular school clothes, we added two sweatshirts, scarves, gloves, toboggans and puffy coats with hoods. Somewhere in there, my children were warm and safe.Other parents dropped kids off who looked like walking Milk Duds as they waddled to their classrooms, where I imagine they began the tedious task of unwrapping themselves from their precautionary wardrobes.The forecast here shows our highs hitting 64 by Friday. Now that's the southern Arkansas weather we know and love.— Josh Jones

PHILADELPHIA — Roller coaster temperatures have provided the area plenty of headaches over the past week with more up-and-down temps to come. The weather has been frightful for eastern Pennsylvania, and temperatures are expected again to plunge into the deep freeze. We're expecting a high of 14 degrees for Tuesday.Additional precipitation struck the area on Sunday morning, and with temperatures hovering at the freezing mark, it caused area roadways to turn into virtual ice skating rinks into Monday. Driving conditions were treacherous as temperatures remained at the freezing mark for much of the morning.The temperatures continued to seesaw into Monday, as a warm front moved into the area Sunday night. Although highs on Monday were in the 40s, the front also brought a heavy dousing of rain. Wisconsin's severe cold hits pocketbook hard

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The temperatures here are minus 11, combined with wind chills that make it feel like 35 below zero.The freeze has forced kids home from school. I'm home from work with my kids, unable to earn money, and we're in the house with layers of clothing on. And the heat is running nonstop, costing plenty every minute.I don't remember school being canceled due to severe cold temperatures since my 22-year-old was in elementary school. There is talk of school closings again for Tuesday, which will land me right here at home with my kids, playing cards, baking cookies, watching movies or perhaps doing artwork. The time with my kids is great; however, the time off work without pay? Not so much.Local grocery stores like Pick ‘n Save, Piggly Wiggly, and Aldi are closing Monday, at least for half of the day, and likely Tuesday as well, with dangerous temperatures looking to top off at 5 degrees, as wind chills are expected to plummet to minus 40.We all like time off, but the cost of heating the house during severely cold weather is enormous. One month takes up a third of my wages during these cold snaps. So, unfortunately, the time off is bittersweet. Time off combined with large heating bills? Not fun.— Lyn Vaccaro

Sun Unleashes 1st Major Solar Flare of 2014

A massive solar flare erupted from the sun on Tuesday (Jan. 7), rising up from what appears to be one of the largest sunspot groups seen on the star's surface in a decade, NASA officials say.NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a video of the huge solar flare as it developed, showing it as an intense burst of radiation from a colossal sunspot region known as AR1944. The sunspot group — which is currently in the middle of the sun as viewed from Earth — is "one of the largest sunspots seen in the last 10 years," NASA officials wrote in a statement. It is as wide as seven Earths, they added.Tuesday's big flare was an X1.2-class solar event on the scale used to classify sun storms. It occurred at 1:32 p.m. EST (1832 GMT) and came just hours after an M7.2-class flare. Space weather officials at the the Space Weather Prediction Center overseen by NOAA are expecting the flare to spark geomagnetic storms in Earth's magnetic field when a wave of super-hot solar plasma associated with the flare - known as a coronal mass ejection - reaches Earth in the next few days. X-class solar flares are the most powerful solar storms on the sun. Mid-level storms are dubbed M-class events and can supercharge Earth's northern lights displays, with weaker C-class flares rounding out the top three.When aimed directly at Earth, the strongest X-class solar flares can pose a risk to astronauts in orbit and interrupt communications and navigation satellite operations. Tuesday's solar flare did force the commercial spaceflight company Orbital Sciences to delay the launch of its first Cygnus cargo mission to the International Space Station from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va.NASA officials told SPACE.com today that the crew of the International Space Station will not have to take measures to shelter themselves from the solar flare's radiation effects. There are currently six astronauts living on the station as part of the outpost's Expedition 38 crew. The team includes three Russian cosmonauts, two NASA astronauts and one Japanese astronaut.The sun is currently in an active phase of its 11-year solar cycle. The current cycle, called Solar Cycle 24, began in 2008. Indonesia's Sinabung volcano continued to spew clouds of hot gas on Wednesday (January 8).

The frequent eruptions have triggered a wave of evacuees with tens of thousands displaced from their homes.
The clouds of hot gas have travelled as far as 4.5 kilometers from the crater and are approaching residential areas, according to recent data from the Centre for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).More than 22,000 people have fled their homes and are being housed in 33 temporary shelters, the National Disaster Management Agency said.Daud Bangun and his family are among around 1,000 villagers living in a hall provided by the local government.Bangun said the temporary shelter was struggling to provide for peoples' needs."We need more clean water. Actually we want some more goods for our daily needs as we have been in this shelter for too long," he said.People from about 25 villages that surround the volcano have been evacuated to the shelters.Many are reliant on soup kitchens for food."We hope that the government and benefactors continue to take notice so we don't lack food supplies," said evacuee Misni Nurhayati at the soup kitchen which is attached to one of the temporary shelters.The 2,460 meter-high volcano in north Sumatra province has been active since 2010 after lying dormant for four centuries. It began erupting periodically in September last year.Thousands of hectares of farming land have been affected by the eruption, the National Disaster Management Agency said.Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the country, which straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire".The most deadly eruption in recent years was of mount Merapi in 2010 near the densely populated city of Yogyakarta in central Java. More than 350 people were killed.
