Mortar hits Vatican embassy in Damascus, no casualties

(Reuters) - The Vatican Embassy in Damascus was hit by mortar fire on Tuesday but there were no casualties, a Vatican spokesman said.It was not clear if the embassy was deliberately targeted. It is located in the wealthy Maliki area of the Syrian capital, where there are several embassies as well as the residences of government and security officials."There was damage but no one was injured. The mortar hit a wing of the embassy that is currently not being used," said Father Ciro Benedettini said from the Vatican City. An official at the embassy said the mortar had damaged part of the roof and left broken glass inside the building."It was very strong and noisy. We stayed inside and we were very afraid," Monsignor Giorgio Chazza told Reuters in Beirut.The embassy, which is still operating in the embattled city, had been hit by eight to ten times by mortar bombs since July, he said.Rebels fighting to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad regularly launch mortar fire at government-held areas inside Damascus.(Reporting by Steve Scherer in Rome and Stephen Kalin in Beirut; Editing by Angus MacSwan)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Space is vast, but it may not be so lonely after all: A study finds the Milky Way is teeming with billions of planets that are about the size of Earth, orbit stars just like our sun, and exist in the Goldilocks zone — not too hot and not too cold for life.Astronomers using NASA data have calculated for the first time that in our galaxy alone, there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone.The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.For perspective, that's more Earth-like planets than there are people on Earth.As for what it says about the odds that there is life somewhere out there, it means "just in our Milky Way galaxy alone, that's 8.8 billion throws of the biological dice," said study co-author Geoff Marcy, a longtime planet hunter from the University of California at Berkeley.The next step, scientists say, is to look for atmospheres on these planets with powerful space telescopes that have yet to be launched. That would yield further clues to whether any of these planets do, in fact, harbor life.The findings also raise a blaring question, Marcy said: If we aren't alone, why is "there a deafening silence in our Milky Way galaxy from advanced civilizations?"In the Milky Way, about 1 in 5 stars that are like our sun in size, color and age have planets that are roughly Earth's size and are in the habitable zone where life-crucial water can be liquid, according to intricate calculations based on four years of observations from NASA's now-crippled Kepler telescope.If people on Earth could only travel in deep space, "you'd probably see a lot of traffic jams," Bill Borucki, NASA's chief Kepler scientist, joked Monday.The Kepler telescope peered at 42,000 stars, examining just a tiny slice of our galaxy to see how many planets like Earth are out there. Scientists then extrapolated that figure to the rest of the galaxy, which has hundreds of billions of stars.For the first time, scientists calculated — not estimated — what percent of stars that are just like our sun have planets similar to Earth: 22 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 8 percentage points.Kepler scientist Natalie Batalha said there is still more data to pore over before this can be considered a final figure.There are about 200 billion stars in our galaxy, with 40 billion of them like our sun, Marcy said. One of his co-authors put the number of sun-like stars closer to 50 billion, meaning there would be at least 11 billion planets like ours.Based on the 1-in-5 estimate, the closest Earth-size planet that is in the habitable temperature zone and circles a sun-like star is probably within 70 trillion miles of Earth, Marcy said.And the 8.8 billion Earth-size planets figure is only a start. That's because scientists were looking only at sun-like stars, which are not the most common stars.An earlier study found that 15 percent of the more common red dwarf stars have Earth-size planets that are close-in enough to be in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold Goldilocks Zone.Put those together and that's probably 40 billion right-size, right-place planets, Marcy said.And that's just our galaxy. There are billions of other galaxies.Scientists at a Kepler science conference Monday said they have found 833 new candidate planets with the space telescope, bringing the total of planets they've spotted to 3,538, but most aren't candidates for life.Kepler has identified only 10 planets that are about Earth's size circling sun-like stars and are in the habitable zone, including one called Kepler 69-c.Because there are probably hundreds of planets missed for every one found, the study did intricate extrapolations to come up with the 22 percent figure — a calculation that outside scientists say is fair."Everything they've done looks legitimate," said MIT astronomer Sara Seager.

Russia Sends Most Powerful Ships to Mediterranean

On Saturday, Russian news agency RT reported that the "Varyag," flagship of Russia's Pacific Fleet, and "Pyotr Veliky" ("Peter the Great"), the nation's most powerful nuclear-powered battleship, were moved into the Mediterranean Sea.The Varyag, which has been dubbed the "aircraft carrier killer," will perform a number of maneuvers, some in coordination with the Russian naval forces currently stationed on the Mediterranean.
The ship will replace the missile cruiser "Moskva," taking command of Russia's Pacific Fleet in the Mediterranean. The Moskva was sent to the region in September to take over local operations.Back in 2011 China started its first tests on its own variation of the Varyag, the "Liaoning," which it had been retrofitting since 1998.Along with the Varyag, the Pyotr Veliky entered the western Mediterranean Saturday, anchoring in the Alboran Sea.In September, admiral of the fleet Viktor Chirkov said the Russian Navy intends to continue increasing its presence, particularly off the Syrian shore. Russian military buildup on the Mediterranean began December 2012.The move is seen as aid for Russian ally Syria. Turkish President Abdullah Gul warned today (Monday) that Syria is in danger of becoming an "Afghanistan on the shores of the Mediterranean."Russia has been heavily involved in supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, reportedly having transferred S-300 missile batteries in September. Russia denied the validity of the report.
While Western powers are reportedly accepting the idea that Assad will stay in power during Syrian transition up until the Spring 2014 elections, Syrian opposition forces have refused to participate in Geneva peace talks until a timeframe for Assad's removal is established.Naval-Technology.com gives details about the Kirov class Pyotr Veliky, which is designed to sink aircraft carriers and defend the fleet against air and submarine attacks.The ship is fitted with a number of missile systems as well as a 130mm AK-130 twin-barrel gun sporting a 22 km range, and carries 3 Ka-27 helicopters. Turkey seizes massive chemical haul at Syrian border

Ankara (AFP) - Turkish authorities have seized a large quantity of chemicals from a convoy trying to illegally enter the country from Syria, which "could be transformed into weapons", the army said Sunday.The convoy of three vehicles refused to stop as it attempted to illegally cross the border on Saturday near the southeastern town Turkish town of Reyhanli, the army said in a statement.Para-military police were forced to shoot out the tyres of the vehicles to stop them, and three drivers jumped out and fled in the direction of Syria.One of them was arrested, the army said without specifying his nationality.The haul of sulphur and another unidentified substance will be examined by a team of army specialists, the statement said.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) reported on Thursday that Syria's entire declared stock of chemical weapons has been placed under seal.This included 1,000 tonnes of chemical agents, which can be used to make weapons, and 290 tonnes of chemical weapons.A UN Security Council resolution stating that the arsenal must be destroyed by mid-2014, was agreed by the United States and Russia to avert military strikes on Syria after deadly chemical weapons attacks near Damascus in August.The West blamed those attacks, which killed hundreds of people, on President Bashar al-Assad's regime, which denied all responsibility, instead blaming the attack on rebels.Once a close ally of Syria, Turkey has cut off ties with the regime in Damascus since Assad's deadly crackdown on popular dissent began in March 2011 and has become one of the most fervent supporters of the Syrian rebellion.

The two Israeli negotiators recently differed over the size of a proposed “neutral zone” in Jerusalem between Israel and a potential Palestinian state, an area which would have open access to citizens from both countries, according to the report.Molcho reportedly sought to keep the area to an absolute minimum and contain it within East Jerusalem, while Livni expressed a more open position on the issue, which could imply the possibility that some areas of East Jerusalem could be put under Palestinian control.An official from the Prime Minister’s Office denied on Tuesday the details on the report.“Israel has made it clear to the Palestinians that Jerusalem will remain united with the present borders under Israeli sovereignty,” Israel Radio reported the official saying.Livni’s office on Tuesday refused to comment on the report of a spat between the negotiators and stressed that Livni and Molcho enjoyed “full cooperation and coordination” during the talks.

US leaders, up to and including President Barack Obama, are merely “paying lip service” when they talk of the military option against Iran, said Tzachi Hanegbi, a leading Likud Knesset member who is one of Prime Minister Benjamin Nentayahu’s closest confidants.When Netanyahu threatens the use of force if all else fails to stop Iran, said Hanegbi, “he’s not making empty threats.” By contrast, “When the speaker is [Secretary of State] Kerry or the White House spokesperson, or even the president and other people, you see that they’re just paying lip service.”The Americans are full of “good intentions,” they have military systems prepared and deployed for tackling the Iranian nuclear program, and it’s clear that Obama understands that the way Iran’s rogue nuclear program is handled will be central to his legacy, Hanegbi told The Times of Israel. Nonetheless, he said, that did not guarantee that the US would show the necessary decisiveness in negotiations with the Iranians.Hanegbi, 56, who sits on the Knesset’s powerful Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, has served in the past as the chairman of that committee and as minister of intelligence and nuclear affairs.In an extensive interview in his Knesset office last week, during which he noted that “I am very close to Netanyahu,” he said he had no doubt that, if all else fails, Israel is militarily capable of setting back the Iranian program, and that nobody credible “doubts Israel’s ability” to do so.

He elaborated: “People have doubts about the outcome [of Israeli military intervention], how long [its effects] will last and what the Iranian response will be… There are many variables and unknowns that I cannot foresee either… [But] none of these considerations is powerful enough for me to be willing to live under the threat of a nuclear Iran… The weight of all of these considerations combined, of all of the possible negative developments, does not even come close to [the cost of] accepting Iran as a nuclear power.”Asked repeatedly whether he thought the time had come to attack, Hanegbi was politely evasive. “There are things that one can think but not say aloud,” he offered, then added later, “I’m lucky, because I don’t make the decision.”He said the Iranians “generally believe that America is their problem, not Israel… They belittle Israel and do not believe that Israel has the power, the courage or the ability” to confront them. In fact, though, said Hanegbi, “nothing will prevent Netanyahu from doing what he believes is right. And he considers this to be the greatest historical mission that he has been given… to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power.”Addressing reports that the prime minister had wanted to strike Iran in the recent past, Hanegbi said nothing would have stopped him — not pressure from the US, from Israel’s security chiefs, or from anywhere else. “If he had thought that military action was crucial at the time, he would have acted. He most likely decided not to because there are great advantages to waiting until Israel comes as close as possible to the limits of its tolerance,” Hanegbi said.Hanegbi, 56, a long-time Likud MK, who left the party to join Kadima and then returned to Likud ahead of January’s elections, acknowledged Israel does not have the means to prevent a deal being done in the US-led negotiations with Tehran that would see sanctions eased while the centrifuges keep on spinning. All this has a purpose, one that he has stated — to remove the sanctions while the centrifuges continue to spin,” Hanegbi said. “Israel does not have the ability to prevent Iran from reaching those goals [at the negotiating table]; it’s just trying to make it clear that these goals are unacceptable to us.”

Hanegbi said he was certain that Rouhani’s election victory in June had come as a surprise to Supreme Leader Ayatolah Khamenei. “Khamenei let him run, but assumed that one of the candidates closer to his approach would be elected,” he said. But Khamenei chose not to intervene because he and the regime “recognized that there was constructive potential, so long as Rouhani was loyal to the central positions.”
Iran’s leaders “know how to intervene if they want to,” Hanegbi said dryly. “Evidently they decided the price of intervention was not worth paying; that things would work out. Although the original plan didn’t work out, they recognized that this was also a positive result and they allowed [Rouhani] to lead what we call his charm offensive. They see it’s effective, so they are certainly happy.”

Judge halts Morsi trial after protests by defiant ex-president

CAIRO — The trial of Mohammed Morsi was adjourned twice early Monday morning after the ousted Egyptian president refused to wear prison clothes and declared himself the legitimate leader of the country.
The trial will resume January 8, giving defense lawyers time to review documents.Morsi told the court trying him for inciting violence and murder that he remains the “legitimate president” of the country.The officials said Morsi also said he rejected the proceedings against him. The defiant remarks came shortly after Morsi’s trial began in Cairo on Monday.The officials, who are inside the courtroom, spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the proceedings.The officials say Morsi’s comments came in response to a judge calling his name out after identifying him as a “defendant.”Morsi replied: “I am Dr. Mohammed Morsi, the president of the republic. I am Egypt’s legitimate president.”He further said, “I refuse to be tried by this court.”“I see the judiciary as a cover for the treacherous coup,” the former president added, according to the Saudi news outlet Al-Arabiya.The judge earlier suspended the trial over Morsi’s refusal to wear the white prison uniform all defendants must wear.The session later got underway, though it was not immediately known how the issue of Morsi’s attire was resolved, but the proceedings were soon adjourned because the defendants — Morsi and 14 other Muslim Brotherhood figures — started chanting and disrupted the hearing. Since his ouster in the July popularly backed coup, Morsi has been held at a secret military location with little communication to the outside world.During four months of detention, Morsi has been extensively questioned and has not been allowed to meet with lawyers. Virtually his only contact with the outside world was two phone calls with his family. Brotherhood supporters have called the detention an outright kidnapping, and Morsi has refused to cooperate with his interrogators.Morsi faces charges along with 14 other Brotherhood figures and allies — including top leaders Mohammed el-Beltagy and Essam el-Erian — in connection to clashes last December outside his presidential palace that left at least 10 dead.After the July coup, Egypt has witnessed one of its worst bouts of violence in decades.On August 14, security forces violently cleared protest camps set up by Morsi supporters, sparking days of unrest that left more than 1,000 dead.Since then, violent incidents have multiplied: a suicide car bomber tried to assassinate Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim in September, and dozens of members of the security forces have been killed in a string of drive-by shootings, explosions and car bombs. On Saturday it was revealed that Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, met with North Korean delegates visiting Tehran in early August, and in the meeting promised to continue cooperation on nuclear missile development.The North Koreans were visiting to attend Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's swearing-in ceremony. Japanese-language Kyodo News Agency broke the news on Sunday, citing a diplomatic source knowledgeable in Iran's internal affairs.According to the Bangkok Post, North Korean concerns that Rouhani's perceived conciliatory position might threaten military cooperation with Pyongyang were assuaged by Jafari, who told them the Revolutionary Guards are not subordinate to the president but rather to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini.He reportedly reassured them that cooperation on "strategic matters," such as nuclear missiles, would continue.In early October, Iran's state run PressTV reported that Iran's Vice President met with the visiting North Korean Labor Minister and expressed the desire to "see relations between the two countries expand in all areas."The ongoing cooperation belies Rouhani's "charm offensive" in wooing the West to ease sanctions on Iran, and reveals that the danger of Iranian and North Korean nuclear missiles remains as real as ever.On Sunday, former UN Ambassador John Bolton gave an interview on WABC radio in which he stressed that Israel does not have much time to make a "fateful decision" about whether to strike Iran's nuclear sites or allow it to become an existential threat.Bolton significantly remarked, "frankly, they should have done this years ago because we all know intelligence is imperfect and Iran may have a more developed capacity than we know about, perhaps in cooperation with North Korea.”As for American involvement, Former US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta released statements this week suggesting that the US may have to use military force on Iran.
However, Bolton expressed skepticism about a US military action against Iran's nuclear program, warning “it isn’t going to happen under the Obama administration. I’ll just say it again. It isn’t going to happen.”
Iranian nuclear capacity doesn't only pose a threat to Israel. The Revolutionary Guards confirmed that "death to America" is still their slogan, a slogan they will sound on November 4, Iran's annual "Grand Day of Death to America."The bellicose rhetoric clearly comes from the top in Iran, as on Sunday Supreme Leader Khameini called Israel an "illegitimate and bastard" regime, and called America a "smiling enemy" not to be trusted.Today (Monday), Israeli National Security Council director Yaakov Amidror said Israel must do everything possible to remove the existential threat posed by Iran, explicitly leaving open the possibility of a military strike.On the other side of the equation with Iran, AFP reported October 24 that North Korea built two new tunnel entrances at its atomic test site, signalling the regime has been preparing to hold underground atomic tests to increase its nuclear arsenal.Iran is not the only ally that North Korea is cooperating with in the Middle East. In late October it was revealed that North Korean pilots had been recruited to man attack helicopters in Syria for Bashar Assad's regime.
