Family Research Council Shooter Worked with LGBT Group
The gunman who opened fire and shot a security guard at the Family Research Council’s Washington, D.C. office has now been identified as Floyd Corkins, a volunteer for the last six months at The DC Center for the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender) Community.
Corkins allegedly made negative comments
about the FRC before shooting the guard and could have intended to shoot
FRC employees had the security guard not heroically intervened. The FRC is a pro-life and pro-traditional
marriage organization. For holding these beliefs, the left-wing
Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) labelled the Family Research Center
as a hate group. This label is not without consequences.
For instance, on Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights
organization, ran a story on a blog about Paul Ryan’s appearance next
month at the Values Voters summit, which is sponsored by the FRC, titled, “Paul Ryan Speaking at Hate Group’s Annual Conference.” And yet, the SPLC released a rather tepid
statement in which there was no expression of concern whatsoever about
the well-being of the security guard who is allegedly in stable
condition after being shot. The SPLC’s statement is below: We’ve seen news of the shooting of a
security guard today at the Family Research Council office in
Washington, D.C., and are getting media inquiries about it. There are
unconfirmed reports that the shooting was ideologically motivated. We
condemn all acts of violence and are following the story closely.

Sept. 11 memorial defends display of steel cross
Published: Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012 - 1:43 pm
Last Modified: Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012 - 4:34 pm
NEW YORK -- A judge should toss out a
lawsuit by a national atheists group seeking to stop the display of a
cross-shaped steel beam found among the wreckage of the World Trade
Center, lawyers for the operators of the Sept. 11 memorial at ground
zero say.The lawyers said in papers filed in U.S. District Court
in Manhattan on Monday that the 17-foot-tall beam will be displayed as a
historical object because it tells part of the story of the rescue and
recovery effort after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which
destroyed the twin towers and killed thousands of people. They
said the display of the cross among 1,000 artifacts, photos, oral
histories and videos is no different from the showing of hundreds of
religious paintings routinely displayed at government-supported art
museums.The nonprofit group American Atheists
sued the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's operators last
year, saying the beam's display would be unconstitutional. A message
left with a lawyer for the group was not immediately returned Wednesday.
Lawyers for the memorial operators said in their papers that the steel beam, found by rescue workers two days after the terror attacks, was an inspiration. They said workers "took solace in its symbolism as they searched for survivors and found mostly victims."The lawyers noted that the museum is an independent non-profit corporation and decisions by its curators about what to display are not state actions subject to constitutional protection."But even if the independent decisions of a non-governmental body could constitute state action, there is no legal authority for the proposition that a museum is prohibited from displaying an item with historical, cultural or artistic significance merely because that item also has religious significance," the lawyers said. They accused the atheists group of seeking "to revise history to eliminate religion from its retelling, ignoring the fact that the people most closely tied to the September 11 tragedy responded in varied ways, including, in some cases, turning to their respective faiths."The museum, which is mostly underground, was scheduled to open this year, but delays have left its opening date uncertain.

Mississippi River dries up as drought worsens: how a dying river could help crash the U.S. economy
August 15, 2012 – MIDWEST – The worst drought in more than 50 years is having a devastating impact on the Mississippi River. The Mississippi has become very thin and very narrow, and if it keeps on dropping there is a very real possibility that all river traffic could get shut down. And considering the fact that approximately 60 percent of our grain, 22 percent of our oil and natural gas, and and one-fifth of our coal travel down the Mississippi River, that would be absolutely crippling for our economy. It has been estimated that if all Mississippi River traffic was stopped that it would cost the U.S. economy 300 million dollars a day. So far most of the media coverage of this historic drought has focused on the impact that it is having on farmers and ranchers, but the health of the Mississippi River is also absolutely crucial to the economic success of this nation, and right now the Mississippi is in incredibly bad shape. In some areas the river is already 20 feet below normal and the water is expected to continue to drop. If we have another 12 months of weather ahead of us similar to what we have seen over the last 12 months then the mighty Mississippi is going to be a complete and total disaster zone by this time next year. Most Americans simply do not understand how vitally important the Mississippi River is to all of us. If the Mississippi River continues drying up to the point where commercial travel is no longer possible, it would be an absolutely devastating blow to the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, vast stretches of the Mississippi are already dangerously low. The following is an excerpt from a transcript of a CNN report that aired on August 14th. A lot of barges have been forced to go with greatly reduced loads so that they will sit higher in the river, and other commercial craft have been forced to stop operating completely. For example, the Mississippi has dropped so low at this point that the famous American Queen Steamboat can no longer safely navigate the river. Down south, the Mississippi River has gotten so low that saltwater is actually starting to move upriver. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is fighting hard to keep that contained. Other waterways in the middle part of the country are in even worse shape. For example, a 100 mile stretch of the Platte River has already dried up. Millions of fish are dying as rivers and streams all over the country continue to get shallower and warmer as a result of the ongoing drought. The last time the condition of the Mississippi River was this bad was back in 1988. At that time, a lot of barge traffic was stopped completely and the shipping industry lost approximately a billion dollars. If a similar thing were to happen now, the consequences could potentially be far worse. –ETF Daily

Israel unhappy after EU blacklists 1980s town
15.08.12 @ 09:28 By Andrew Rettman
BRUSSELS - Israel has complained about the EU's inclusion of parts of the town of Modi'in-Maccabim-Reut on a blacklist of "settlements."The European Commission on 3 August added three postal codes in the
town to a register of over 500 codes relating to "Israeli settlements
located within the territories brought under Israeli administration
since June 1967."The designation refers to Palestinian land annexed after the
so-called Six-Day War in a move considered by EU countries to violate
binding UN resolutions.
Products originating from annexed land cannot benefit from preferential tariffs agreed under a 12-year-old EU-Israel trade deal. The commission for the first time also published the list online, saying "the way [the rules] are implemented in the EU should be streamlined in the light of experience."The list was previously available to EU customs authorities who are supposed to use it to cross-check importers' certificates of origin. But NGOs, such as Human Rights Watch and the Council for European Palestinian Relations, say the system does not work.Modi'in-Maccabim-Reut is a town of around 80,000 people dating back to the 1980s.It is in a strip of land between 1km and 3kms wide which was originally designated as a buffer zone between Israeli-controlled territory and Palestinian territory after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.The Israeli foreign ministry in a statement published on its website on Tuesday (14 August) said the EU broke off talks on the blacklist "ex abrupto" and that it has lodged "an official protest" in Brussels. It added: "For anyone who deals in reality, there is not the slightest doubt that the Modi'in, Maccabim and Re'ut localities are an integral part of Israel and their future is not in question."It also said that naming the town on a public EU document risks creating a new political flashpoint: "It extends the domain of conflict to places and issues that do not belong there."For its part, the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper quoted two trade lawyers, Gill Nadal and Omer Wagner, who said the move "constitutes a deviation and breach of contract" of the EU trade agreement. The right-leaning Ynetnews cited Israel's minister of diaspora affairs, Yuli Edelstein, as saying the EU is "trying to gnaw away at Israel's sovereignty."The publication of the EU list has also raised fears EU consumers will use it to privately boycott goods. The development comes after EU foreign ministers in May said they will "fully and effectively implement existing EU legislation and the bilateral arrangements applicable to settlement products."It also comes after the Union last month upgraded trade and diplomatic relations with Israel. The upgrade had been put on hold for almost three years after Israel's attack on Gaza in 2009, which killed around 1,400 Palestinians, over 300 of whom were children.

Firefighters make progress against Canary Islands wildfire
AFP – 15 hours ago AUG 16,12
Firefighters
made progress Wednesday against a wildfire on Spain's Canary Island of
La Gomera that ravaged part of a rare nature reserve and forced out
thousands of people, officials said."The drop in temperatures and the change in wind direction has caused
the fire to advance slowly and as a result the work to extinguish it
has had better results," Canaries emergency services spokeswoman Carmina
Lorenzo said.
Seven water-dropping planes and four helicopters were battling the blaze on the Atlantic island, which broke out more than a week ago and spread rapidly across the parched land due to sweltering temperatures and gusty winds.Emergency services had evacuated 5,000 people but almost all of them were allowed home by late Wednesday. The fire has ravaged more than 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres), including parts of the the Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to rare subtropical plants.
Separately, three wildfires erupted Wednesday in the neighbouring island of Tenerife but firefighters quickly brought the blazes under control, local officials said. The head of the Canary Islands' government, Paulino Rivero, said the wildfires on both islands appeared to have been deliberately lit and called on police to act.
"Security forces must exert all possible pressure to try to detain these heartless individuals who, without giving it any thought, endanger people's lives and goods as well as nature and generate anxiety, unease and uncertainty," he told reporters in Tenerife."Enough already," he added.Spain is at a particularly high fire risk this summer after suffering its driest winter in 70 years. Two firefighters died while tackling a blaze in pine forests near Alicante in southeastern Spain on Sunday, authorities said, and four people died in a wildfire last month in the northern Catalonia region. The Spanish government said a total of 132,300 hectares of land had been burnt this year up to August 5.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - War with Iran would probably turn into a month-long conflict on various fronts with missile strikes on Israeli cities and some 500 dead, Israel's civil defense minister said in an interview published on Wednesday."There is no room for hysteria. Israel's home front is prepared as never before," Matan Vilnai, a former general who is about to leave his cabinet post to become ambassador to China, told the Maariv daily. The interview coincided with Israeli media reports over
the past week suggesting that Israel might attack Iran's nuclear
facilities before the U.S. presidential election in November.U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday
that Washington does not believe Israel has made a decision on whether
to strike."I don't want to be dragged into the debate," Vilnai
said, when asked if Israel should go to war against Iran. "But the
United States is our greatest friend and we will always have to
coordinate such moves with it."Echoing an assessment already voiced by Defence Minister Ehud Barak,
Vilnai was quoted as saying hundreds of missiles could hit Israeli
cities daily and kill some 500 people in a war with Iran, which has
promised strong retaliation if attacked."There might be fewer dead, or more, perhaps ... but
this is the scenario for which we are preparing, in accordance with the
best expert advice," Vilnai said."The assessments are for a war that will last 30 days
on several fronts," he said, alluding to the possibility Iranian-backed
Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon and Palestinian militants in Gaza would
also launch rockets at Israel.
Israel has built a sophisticated missile shield likely to stop some of the salvoes and regularly holds civil defence drills to prepare for rocket strikes.Vilnai made no mention in the interview of the impact a month of conflict would have on Israel's economy should Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial center, be hit by long-range missiles.Tel Aviv was not struck by missiles during Israel's three-week war in the Gaza Strip in late 2008 and early 2009 and in a 34-day conflict with Hezbollah in 2006. But it came under Scud rocket fire from Iraq during the 1991 Gulf war.War jitters with Iran, which denies accusations that it is striving to develop nuclear weapons, caused steep declines in Israeli financial markets on Monday although some of those losses were recovered on Tuesday."Just as the citizens of Japan have to understand they are likely to be hit by an earthquake, Israelis must realize that anyone who lives here has to be prepared for missiles striking the home front," Vilnai said.Vilnai is set to leave office by the end of August. Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that he will be replaced by Avraham Dichter, a previous head of the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic intelligence agency.

MATTHEW 24:10-11
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights (AP) — Civil war in neighboring Syria is tearing apart the once tight-knit Druse community on the Golan Heights. Angry arguments between supporters and foes of Syrian President Bashar Assad have pitted husbands against wives, driven a wedge between neighbors and even threated to ruin an upcoming wedding. The
two camps scrawl tit-for-tat graffiti on walls and run rival news
websites. At a brawl last month, regime supporters pelted their rivals
with eggs, shoes and rocks, prompting religious leaders to declare a ban
on political demonstrations in the Golan's four Druse villages."We shout at each other, when before, we used to say hello," lamented Assad supporter Ghandi Kahlouni, a 53-year-old pharmacist. The
growing divisions between those backing Assad and those sympathizing
with Syrian rebels are surprising, considering the tight weave of the
22,000-strong Druse community on the Golan, a fenced-off plateau Israel captured from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981.Since
the capture by Israel, most of the Golan Druse — followers of a
secretive offshoot of Islam — have continued to identify themselves as
Syrian, even though many have never been to Syria, and in public at
least they all backed Assad's regime as their one-day savior from
Israeli rule. However, some began questioning the Syrian
dictator's actions as the regime violently cracked down on opponents.
Activists estimate some 20,000 people have been killed in the past 18
months of fighting that has descended into civil war.Others
support the regime, fearing for the future of their sect in a rebellion
lead by orthodox Muslims and worried Syria will collapse into chaos. It's
not clear how many residents now support the rebels, but backing for
Assad has clearly eroded. Even some of the most fervent regime
supporters are critical of Assad's rule.Last month, simmering tensions erupted into violence.
It began when several dozen rebel supporters demonstrated in Majdal Shams,
the largest Druse village on the Golan. Kahlouni, the pharmacist, said
demonstrators hurled insults at the Syrian leader. Regime supporters
struck back with eggs, rocks and shoes, said Mayada Abu Jabal, a
39-year-old physiotherapist.
Following the brawl, Druse leaders
threatened to banish anyone showing public support for either side,
fearing more serious violence, said Majdal Shams Mayor Dolan Abu Saleh.
Religious authorities wouldn't comment. The mayor said two people were
briefly expelled. The divisions even threaten to disrupt an upcoming wedding in Majdal Shams later this month. Some 2,000 people are expected to attend, but members of the Abu Jabal
clan fear the bride's father may refuse to come. Many in the large clan
support the rebels. The bride's immediate family supports Assad's
regime. The groom's sister, Shefa Abu Jabal,
said tensions were so bad that the couple canceled the traditional
pre-wedding visit of the groom's relatives to the bride's family,
fearing it would end in an argument."We aren't sure if he'll come
for his daughter's sake," Shefa Abu Jabal said of the father of the
bride, who was not available for comment. Now, talk of politics is
banned in the house. Instead, the groom's mother busied herself with
baking date-stuffed semolina wedding treats.
But the political battle continues, fought with graffiti scribbled on the walls of cinderblock homes spread over several hills."Bashar Assad"
was scrawled on a concrete wall. The Arabic word for "may he fall" was
smeared over, converting the anti-regime chant into a defiant fist-pump
for the Syrian leader."God, Bashar and Syria, only" — a chant of
pro-Assad supporters, was sprayed nearby. Assad's name was wiped off by
anti-regime activists.Online,
the "Golan Times" cheers on the regime with articles like "Opposition
member thinks of returning to Syria to get free medical treatment." On
the website "Jawlan" — the Arabic name for the Golan — there's an essay
on the plight of Syrian refugees in Jordan. The Druse are spread across Israel, Lebanon
and Syria. They survived in a turbulent region by showing allegiance to
their country of residence, banning marriage outside the faith and
shunning conversions. Some 100,000 Druse in Israel are loyal to
the Jewish state, while Lebanese Druse are important players in their
country's politics. In Syria, Druse make up a tiny minority of some 3
percent in a country of 22 million and are marginal to the bloody power
struggle there.Only one time before was there such bitterness
among the Golan Druse, when a minority of residents supported Israel's
annexation of the territory in 1981, said Salim Brake, a Golan resident
and political analyst. They were beaten by other residents, and the
controversy ended with the overwhelming majority deciding not to
recognize Israel's annexation, Brake said. Now, not discussing politics appears to be the only way to still tensions.Apple
farmer Yousef Shams, 61, described rebel supporters as "donkeys." His
pro-rebel relatives say they don't like to talk politics with him,
hoping to preserve family relations.Rebel supporter Ayman Abu Jabal said he used to argue with his wife Sana, until she shifted allegiances to his side.People
tend to socialize in their own groups. On a recent night, Abu Jabal and
his wife stretched out in an apple orchard beside Majdal Shams.
They and their buddies, also rebel supporters, chatted, spoke by Skype
to activists in Syria, snacked on nuts, smoked water pipes and made
jokes about regime supporters.
Still, there's a somber mood in Majdal Shams. Both sides say they feel relations are irreparably broken. Regime supporter Kahlouni said it was best to remain quiet."We
aren't even the size of a neighborhood in Damascus," he said, referring
to the Golan's Arab residents. "Let the days judge who is right."
BEIRUT/ALEPPO (Reuters) - Gulf Arab states began evacuating their citizens from Lebanon on Thursday after kidnappings linked to Syria's civil war showed violence has begun to spread across a region torn by sectarian divisions.Lebanese Shi'ite gunmen seized more than 20 people in an area of Beirut run by Hezbollah, a group backed by Syrian ally Iran, and said they were holding citizens of Turkey and Saudi Arabia, key backers of Syria's mainly Sunni Muslim insurgency.Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait
and Bahrain all told their nationals to leave at once. Some nations have
already begun flying their citizens home. The kidnappers' threat to take more Saudi, Turkish and
Qatari hostages to secure the release of a kinsman held by Syrian rebels
in Damascus bore ominous echoes of Lebanon's own, long civil war - and
Arab governments lost no time in urging visitors to leave Beirut's
popular summer tourist haunts.
"The snowball will grow," warned Hatem al-Meqdad, a senior member of the powerful Lebanese Shi'ite Meqdad family who said his brother was detained by the Free Syrian Army two days ago.Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite minority is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, has long relied on support from Shi'ite Iran and its Hezbollah allies. He accuses the Sunni powers of the Gulf and Turkey of promoting the revolt against him, which grew out of Arab Spring demonstrations 18 months ago. While his opponents, and the Western powers which sympathise with them, insist they want to avoid the kind of sectarian blood-letting seen in Iraq, rebels who mostly come from Syria's disadvantaged Sunni majority have seized Iranians and Lebanese there in recent weeks, saying they may be working for Assad.
REGIONAL MOVES
On Wednesday, the Meqdad clan said it was holding more than 20 people, including a Saudi, a Turkish businessman and several Syrians they described as anti-Assad fighters. Its action was a blow to a Lebanese economy for which Gulf tourists have played a part in recovery after 15 years of civil war ended in 1990.
"We still haven't even done one percent; we still haven't really moved," said a man who told reporters late on Wednesday in Beirut's Hezbollah-controlled Dahiya district that he and his fellow masked gunmen from the Meqdad clan's "military wing" were ready to take more action against Syrian rebels in Lebanon. The Turkish hostage told a Lebanese television channel he was being treated well. Another station broadcast footage it said showed two Syrian hostages in the custody of masked gunmen from the Meqdad clan wearing fatigues and armed with rifles.Air France diverted one of its planes away from Beirut on Wednesday evening for "security reasons" after the kidnappings. The road from the airport has regularly been blocked by protesting families of Lebanese being held in Syria.Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the kidnappings, but his government seemed largely powerless to act."This brings us back to the days of the painful war, a page that Lebanese citizens have been trying to turn," he said.Fighting in Syria has triggered violence across the border before - some of it linked to Syrian rebels bringing arms and supplies across Lebanon. But the round of hostage-taking on both sides adds a new factor for regional states, who are advancing their strategic interests while Russia and the West are deadlocked by their deep divisions over Syria.
At a meeting in Saudi Arabia, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation suspended Syria on Thursday, citing Assad's suppression of the Syrian revolt, but there was little support for direct military involvement.
The 57-member body's rebuke is mostly symbolic, but it shows Syria's isolation - as well as that of its ally Iran - across much of the Sunni-majority Islamic world.Against that backdrop, the bloodshed in Syria continues.
AIR STRIKE, WAR CRIMES
In Azaz, near the heavily contested northern economic hub of Aleppo, bombing by Assad's air force killed 30 people, according to a local doctor, and wounded scores more as buildings were flattened. Among those hurt, a rebel commander said, were seven Lebanese being held captive. A further four were missing.
Assad's forces have increasingly been using their air power against the lightly armed insurgents - a tactic which featured in fresh accusations of war crimes leveled by U.N. human rights investigators on Wednesday.
They said rebels had also committed war crimes, but the violations "did not reach the gravity, frequency and scale" of those by state forces and the pro-Assad shabbiha militia.Last month, Assad's troops successfully counter-attacked after rebels seized parts of Damascus. They are still trying to dislodge insurgents from Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.A Syrian air strike wrecked a hospital in a rebel-held area of Aleppo, a doctor there said on Wednesday, an attack that New York-based Human Rights Watch said violated international law. At least two holes gaped in the walls of Al Shifaa Hospital and four floors were heavily damaged by Tuesday's raid. Most Western and Arab governments have called on Assad to go, saying his government's violent response to initially peaceful protests give him no place in a future Syria.Russia has opposed tougher U.N. sanctions against Damascus, a long-time strategic ally, but denies it is actively helping Assad remain in power. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western governments of reneging on a deal among world powers made on June 30 to push for a transitional government in Syria.Washington shot back that it was Russia and China which had blocked efforts to pass a U.N. Security Council resolution. The price being paid by the Syrian people was underlined by the U.N. humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos, who said that as many of 2.5 million people, about one tenth of the population, were in need of aid.Speaking in Syria where she met Prime Minister Wael al-Halki this week, Amos said: "Back in March, we estimated that a million people were in need of help. Now as many as 2.5 million are in need of assistance and we are working to update our plans and funding requirements."(Additional reporting by Tom Perry, Issam Abdullah Asma Alsharif in Mecca and Erika Solomon in Beirut; Writing by Giles Elgood; Editing by Jon Boyle)
