Palestinians flock to Jerusalem for Muslim night of prayer

Palestinians poured into Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank on Tuesday for a night of prayer at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, in a rare opportunity for many of them to visit the Muslim holy site, the third-holiest in Islam.Police said that by early evening "tens of thousands" had arrived to mark Laylat al-Qadr, or Night of Destiny, when Muslims believe the first verses of the Koran were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.Mosque officials said they expected a total of 300,000 worshippers although it was not known how many would be from the West Bank, Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem or from Israel's Arab minority.

Report: Russian Nuclear Attack Sub Patrolled Waters Off Gulf for a Month…Undetected

A Russian, nuclear-powered attack sub patrolled the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, off the U.S. coast, undetected for a month, a new startling report from the Washington Free Beacon says.
The sub, the Free Beacon says, is an Akula vessel loaded with cruise missiles and is one of the quietest in the Russian fleet.

The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.
The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.

“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.
“It’s a very stealthy boat so it can sneak around and avoid detection and hope to get past any protective screen a boomer might have in place,” the official said, referring to the Navy nickname for strategic missile submarines.
If confirmed, this isn’t the first time the Russians have made such a bold move recently. In 2009, the New York Times reported two other nuclear-powered attack subs were found to have patrolled the eastern seaboard, about 200 miles off the coast.“It’s a confounding situation arising from a lack of leadership in our dealings with Moscow,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told the Free Beacon. “While the president is touting our supposed ‘reset’ in relations with Russia, Vladimir Putin is actively working against American interests, whether it’s in Syria or here in our own backyard.”

A solicitation posted by the SSA on the FedBizOpps website asks for contractors to supply 174,000 rounds of “.357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point pistol ammunition.”An online ammunition retailer describes the bullets as suitable “for peak performance rivaling and sometimes surpassing handloads in many guns,” noting that the ammo is “a great personal defense bullet.”The synopsis to the solicitation adds that the ammunition is to be shipped to 41 locations within 60 days of purchase. A separate spreadsheet lists those locations, which include the Social Security headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland as well as major cities across the country including Los Angeles, Detroit, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Denver, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Seattle.Hollow point bullets are designed to expand as they enter the body, causing maximum damage by tearing apart internal organs.It’s not outlandish to suggest that the Social Security Administration is purchasing the bullets as part of preparations for civil unrest. Social security welfare is estimated to keep around 40 per cent of senior citizens out of poverty. Should the tap run dry in the aftermath of an economic collapse which the Federal Reserve has already told top banks to prepare for, domestic disorder could ensue if people are refused their benefits.Indeed, earlier this year the Department of Homeland Security ran a drill called Operation Shield which included turning the entrance of a Florida Social Security office into a checkpoint manned by Federal Protective Service officers armed with semiautomatic rifles.“With their blue and white SUVs circled around the Main Street office, at least one official was posted on the door with a semiautomatic rifle, randomly checking identifications. And other officers, some with K-9s, sifted through the building,” reported the Daily Commercial.A rash of solicitations by federal agencies for hollow point bullets in recent months has stoked fears that the government is preparing for civil unrest caused by a financial collapse on a scale similar or even larger to scenes already witnessed in Europe over the last two years.As we reported yesterday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has put out a contract for 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets along with 500 paper targets.Despite initially asking the bullets to be delivered to the National Weather Service, NOAA claimed this was a “clerical error” and insisted the ammunition was being sent to the Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement. Why powerful hollow point bullets that are designed to tear apart internal organs are needed for practice shooting at paper targets has not been explained.Back in March, Homeland Security purchased 450 million rounds of .40-caliber hollow point bullets that are designed to expand upon entry and cause maximum organ damage, prompting questions as to why the DHS needed such a large amount of powerful bullets merely for training purposes.This was followed by another DHS solicitation asking for a further 750 million rounds of assorted bullets, including 357 mag rounds that are able to penetrate walls.The DHS recently put out an order for riot gear in preparation for the upcoming DNC, RNC and presidential inauguration. The U.S. Army is also busy buying similar equipment.
The DHS also recently purchased a number of bullet-proof checkpoint booths that include ‘stop and go’ lights.

Eurozone slides deeper into recession, Germany grows

BRUSSELS - Eurozone economies continue to go separate ways, with overall recession of 0.2 percent, while Germany's economy is still growing by 0.3 percent, according to the latest Eurostat data comparing the three months from April to June to the previous quarter.The so-called flash estimate, which is expected to be confirmed by final data in September, puts the eurozone and the EU as a whole on a declining trend, both having their gross domestic product shrinking by 0.2 percent compared to the first three months of the year.
When compared to the same period last year, the 17 euro-states fare even worse, with their GDP shrinking by 0.4 percent, while the 27 EU states remain at the same 0.2 percent recession.Germany's economy grew by 0.3 percent of GDP, while France stagnates. Portugal is shrinking by 1.2 percent, Italy and Spain by 0.7 and 0.4 percent, respectively."The flash estimate is in line with markets expectations and our economic forecast," EU commission spokesman Ryan Heath said on Tuesday (14 August) during a press conference.
However he highlighted that the data for the UK is worse than expected, with its GDP shrinking by 0.7 percent compared to the previous three months and by 0.8 percent compared to the same period last year.
By far worse is Greece, whose economy shrunk by 6.2 percent compared to last year.Heath said this was mainly due to the two rounds of elections and the delays that occurred in implementing the terms of the second bailout.On Tuesday, the Greek government managed to sell €4 billion worth of three-months bills to its own banks, which in turn had the money from the first tranche of the €130 billion bailout agreed in March.
This will allow Athens to repay a batch of bonds maturing on 20 August and keep the European Central Bank (ECB) lifeline for its banks open.A mere reshuffling of debt to buy Greece the time needed for the troika of international lenders to write up a key report in September, with the second tranche of €31.5bn not expected until October.

Flooding in central Nigeria kills at least 28

Flooding caused by heavy rains in central Nigeria has killed at least 28 people, with many others still missing, while also destroying homes, bridges and farmland, officials said Tuesday."I have counted 28 bodies and many people are still missing after the flood," said Kemi Nshe, local government chairman for the Shendam district in central Nigeria's Plateau state.He said some 1,500 people were displaced by the rains, the worst of which occurred Sunday.A Red Cross official in the area said relief workers were having difficulties accessing flooded areas, which he said included around five communities. He said heavy rain began Saturday night and continued into Sunday."Flooding has affected close to five (districts), and a lot of bridges have been broken, a lot of people have lost their houses," said Manasseh Panpe.Last month in another area of Plateau state, heavy rainfall forced a dam to overflow, causing flooding that left at least 35 people dead and destroyed or damaged some 200 homes.Much of Africa's most populous nation has been affected by heavy seasonal rainfall, and officials have warned more flooding is likely to occur in a number of areas in the coming days.The rainy season typically runs from March to September.

Wildfire in central Wash. state destroys 40 homes

(AP) — A state fire spokesman says a fast-moving wildfire has burned 40 homes in central Washington.State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark Grassel says fire commanders estimate the blaze has burned at least 23 square miles since it started Monday afternoon east of the town of Cle Elum.Fire officials say more homes are burning or under threat. So far, no injuries have been reported.
Grassel says the fire crept within about six miles of Ellensburg. Crews stopped its forward movement, although it is not contained.The Kittitas County sheriff's office warned those in the fire's path to evacuate.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Israel hasn't decided on Iran strike: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States does not believe Israel has made a decision on whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday, following sharp rhetoric from Israeli officials that has put financial markets on edge.Panetta, who visited Israel two weeks ago, told reporters at the Pentagon it was important that military action be the "last resort" and said there was still time for sanctions and diplomatic pressure to work.That contrasts with Israeli warnings in recent days about the possibility of a strike. Israel's envoy to Washington, Michael Oren, said on Monday in a CNN interview that the window of time before the need to resort to military action was "small and the window is getting smaller." He acknowledged that Israel's clock was ticking faster than Washington's.Asked about comments by Israeli officials, Panetta said: "I don't believe they've made a decision as to whether or not they will go in and attack Iran at this time.""With regards to the issue of where we're at from a diplomatic point of view, the reality is that we still think there is room to continue to negotiate," he said.Tehran says its nuclear ambitions are peaceful and has threatened wide-ranging reprisals if attacked. A muscular response from Tehran would increase the likelihood that the United States would be drawn into any conflict.Israel's financial markets fell sharply on Monday in response to the intensifying debate on the prospect of going to war with Iran, although some of those losses were recovered on Tuesday.General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, cautioned that any Israeli strike would not destroy Iran's nuclear program, only delay its work."I may not know about all of their capabilities but I think that it's a fair characterization to say that they could delay but not destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities," he said.U.S. officials have stressed that Washington could deal a decisive blow to Iran's nuclear sites, if necessary, and will not allow Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Syrian rebels seek new leverage with abductions

BEIRUT (AP) — With gunmen standing in the background, a Syrian rebel video purported Tuesday to show their latest captive: a lone Lebanese Shiite suspected of links to pro-regime Hezbollah whose abduction appears part of a wider strategy shift to target perceived backers of Bashar Assad.A series of hostage-takings aimed at Assad's few remaining supporters — Iranians and Lebanese Shiites — has sought to both send a message about the rebels' reach and try to buff their image with seeming propaganda stunts such as captives praising their treatment and denouncing Assad's regime.It also underscores the broader regional rifts exposed by Syria's civil war. Sunni powers such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia are strongly with the rebels, and Shiite giant Iran and its proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon are standing by Assad, whose minority Alawite community is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.The abductions suggest the Syrian conflict is taking on increasing sectarian overtones as the country lurches deeper into crisis. The U.N. says an estimated 2.5 million Syrians have been injured, displaced or face problems securing food or other necessities, a sharp rise from about 1 million three months ago."There is an ongoing humanitarian crisis," said the U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos after meetings in Damascus to try to open routes for more international aid into Syria. "It is important that the fighting stops."In Amman, Jordan, the highest-ranking political defector from Assad's regime, former prime minister Riad Hijab, called for other top figures in the government and military to join the rebel side.
"The regime is on the verge of collapse morally and economically, in addition to cracks in the military," Hijab told a news conference in his first public remarks since fleeing to Jordan last week with his family under the protection of the Free Syrian Army.He said he felt "pain in his soul" over the regime's shelling and other attacks on rebel strongholds as the government stepped up its military offensive. Activists say more than 20,000 people have been killed in the violence since March 2011."I was powerless to stop the injustice," Hijab said, speaking in front of the rebel flag. Hours later, the U.S. lifted sanctions on Hijab that sought to freeze his assets."Syria is full of honorable officials and military leaders who are waiting for the chance to join the revolution," he said, claiming that Assad's forces only control 30 percent of Syria. "I urge the army to follow the example of Egypt's and Tunisia's armies — take the side of the people."Hijab is a Sunni from the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, where rebels claimed to have shot down a regime MiG-23 warplane on Monday and captured the pilot. In the video claiming to show the captive pilot, a rebel insists that he would be treated according to the Geneva Convention — an apparent reply to international denunciations over recent execution-style killings of suspected regime supporters.The authenticity of the video — or the veracity of the rebel claims of downing the warplane — could not be independently confirmed. Syria says the pilot ejected after a technical malfunction in the fighter jet.The latest rebel video — broadcast on the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya channel — claimed to show a Lebanese Shiite who said he was among 1,500 Hezbollah fighters sent to Syria on Aug. 3 to aid Assad's military. The authenticity of that video also could not be independently verified."Most of those who entered were snipers," said the captive, who identified himself as Hassane Salim al-Mikdad, and said his group was told by Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah to help "the Shiite army against Sunni gangs." The captive appeared to have bruises on his face. Three masked gunmen stood behind him while a man off-camera asked questions.The Syrian opposition has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of sending fighters to Syria, which the militant group denies. Hezbollah also said it "categorically denies" any links to al-Mikdad.Abductions claimed by Syrian rebels have increased sharply as part of an apparent new tactic to rattle the regime and its core supporters outside the country.In May, Syrian rebels captured 11 Lebanese Shiites shortly after they crossed from Turkey on their way to Lebanon. Earlier this month, 48 Iranians were captured by Syrian rebels near Damascus. Rebels claim the Iranians include members of Tehran's Revolutionary Guard and were on a "reconnaissance mission" in the Syrian capital. Iran insists the men were on a religious pilgrimage.The Lebanese are apparently being held to try to pressure the Beirut government to show greater support for the Syrian rebels — which is unlikely because of Hezbollah's strong influence and backing of Assad.On Monday, gunmen abducted the correspondent of Iran's state-run Arabic-language TV Al-Alam in the central city of Homs, his wife told The Associated Press. She said her husband, Ahmad Sattouf, was taken from his office and his whereabouts are unknown.Sattouf is the third journalist to be abducted in Syria over the past three days. Three other journalists have been killed in Damascus and its suburbs since late last week.Rebel videos have increasingly tried to portray the opposition fighters as generous to their captives — perhaps in hopes of spurring more military defections. It is impossible to assess whether comments from captives are forced or scripted, but in nearly all cases armed gunmen are visible.
A video circulated Tuesday purported to show several government soldiers captured in Deir el-Zour. A voice from off-camera asked: "How did the Free Syrian Army treat soldiers of Assad?""The best treatment," a soldier replied."Compare the treatment of Assad's soldiers toward the people with how the Free Syrian Army soldiers treat the people," the narrator said."There is no comparison," one soldier answered.The clashes in Deir el-Zour are part of several fronts across Syria, including shelling and ground attacks by Syrian forces in attempts to push out rebel pockets in the largest city Aleppo. Just over the border in Turkey — which has raised ideas of a safe-haven zone inside Syria — troops held a one-hour drill with armored personnel carriers and missile launchers, according to Turkey's Anadolu Agency. It was the fourth such military maneuver this month.Also Tuesday, U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos visited schools housing hundreds of displaced people in the Zahera district of Damascus soon after her arrival in Syria to assess the impact of the conflict and discuss ways to increase humanitarian aid."The people I met today told me they need clean water, sanitation, medical help and food," she said in a statement. "They are frightened. Many have no home to return to and they desperately need more help and support."Amos stressed the need to reach all those affected by the conflict in a meeting with Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi and praised the Syrian Arab Red Crescent for continuing to provide aid despite the great dangers, her office said.
At the U.N., meanwhile, officials hope to revive a collapsed peace initiative.A spokesman for outgoing U.N. peace envoy Kofi Annan said that Syria authorities have backed formerAlgerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Brahimi as his successor. The spokesman, Ahmed Fawzi, said the next step was for Brahimi, a longtime U.N. official, to formally accept the post and resume efforts for a diplomatic solution to Syria's crisis.
U.N. diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because there has been no official announcement, said Brahimi wants a signal of support from the deeply divided U.N. Security Council before taking the job.
In another possible sign of Syria's growing international isolation, the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation gathered in Saudi Arabia after preliminary calls to suspend Syria from the group.
