A group of Republican lawmakers is protesting the removal a reference to God in the patch logo for the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO).The 35 lawmakers, led by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), wrote a letter to Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz urging them to restore the logo with a reference to God.Forbes warned that the action taken by the RCO could set a dangerous precedent when it comes to religion and the military.The action taken by the RCO suggests that all references to God, regardless of their context, must be removed from the military,Forbes wrote.As we are confident that your legal advisors would not suggest that censorship is required for compliance with the First Amendment, we ask that you reverse this perplexing decision.The patch logo was changed after a military atheist group, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, protested the reference to God on the patch. The patch has a saying on it in Latin, which is common for military patches, that tranlates to: Doing God’s Work with Other People’s Money.The saying was then changed last month to say: Doing Miracles with Other People’s Money.The RCO is an office created in 2003 that expedites weapons systems and reports to a board of directors that includes the Air Force secretary and chief of staff.This isn't the first time Forbes has gotten invovled with God and the government.

The Mormon Church owns one of the most active and unregulated gun sale portals on the web, according to a national investigation released by the New York City Mayor's office.The website in question is KSL.com, the online hub for Utah's NBC affiliate and sister radio station, which are both owned and operated by the for-profit arm of the Mormon Church. In addition to local news, KSL.com produces a popular classifieds section that reaches millions of users well beyond Utah.The LDS connection drew little notice when Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a leading financier of the gun control movement, published the report in December, but an official involved with Bloomberg's investigation is calling out the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for putting profits over principle.A church, like any other organization, has the right to raise money,said the person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for the mayor.But one would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren't fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce.According to the Bloomberg report, KSL.com had the third-most active gun listings of any site on the web during a 100-day period last year (2,713), coming in behind only large specialty firearm sites Gunlistings.org, and Armslist.com, and beating out even Craigslist.But the real problem isn't the volume, the report's authors say; it's the unregulated nature of KSL.com. While other classifieds sites require users to deal only on their sites with registered and confirmed accounts, KSL makes it easy for buyers and sellers to deal behind closed doors.
From the report:[On KSL.com] sellers frequently list their contact email and phone number, which are openly displayed on the ad. This feature makes it easy for buyers to contact sellers and arrange to buy a firearm without identifying themselves – a feature that is particularly attractive to unscrupulous purchasers who do not want their purchases detected or recorded. And the website allows visitors to search for items being sold by private individuals who, in contrast to licensed dealers, are not required to conduct background checks.Brett Atkinson, general manager of the site, insisted that KSL is a responsible corporate citizen that cooperates with law enforcement, and frequently reviews its policies and procedures.But its own internal reviews have yielded little change in its approach to gun ads--even as local police have raised concerns.According to an article published last March in the Deseret News,which is also owned by the Mormon church, KSL considered eliminating the firearm category from its site altogether, under pressure from state law enforcement. Ultimately, though, it decided to keep the gun ads, opting only to post a guide to gun sale laws more prominently on its homepage.The responsibility for the transaction is that of the parties involved,Atkinson said.This is just like any other transaction, a vehicle, a lawnmower, a bicycle.But the person involved with the Bloomberg investigation said KSL and the Mormon church should set a higher bar for gun ads.
The fact that they have looked into this makes it clear that they understand they have a problem, he said. If they have essentially decided to press on without taking effective action, it seems they've made a choice to put profits over principle.He continued: If you're going to [facilitate sales] for something deadly, you have an obligation to make sure it's done legally and appropriately,the person said.Just throwing up your hands and saying, We're not willing to give up this profit center is unacceptable, and particularly so when it comes from a religious organization.
UPDATE: Mark Glaze, Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns--which is co-chaired by Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino--reached out to BuzzFeed to push back against the notion that the Mormon Church was being singled out.Just like Craigslist and every other site, if [KSL is] allowing gun sales, they have a responsibility to make sure they’re not an entry point for buyers trying to avoid a background check, Glaze said. There are simple steps that can screen out bad actors, and many sites are already using them.
Commissioner continues push on pajamas ban

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — One Caddo Parish commissioner continues his fight to outlaw pajama pants in public, despite a lack of support from his fellow commissioners.
Commissioner John Escude said Monday he is absolutely not supporting the ban.
Commission Michael Williams first mentioned the idea during a January commission meeting. He told his fellow commissioners then about an incident that occurred at a local Wal-Mart during which he witnessed several young men wearing pajama pants with no underwear. He said he and several elderly customers were offended by the sight of the men's private parts through the thin clothing.Williams said he would like to meet with the parish attorney to research other laws.

When and why everything started? Who and what is to blame? If so, you’re not alone.We conducted an extensive investigation of the occupy movement to identify the people involved, as well as the money and influence behind it. What we found is that nothing related to the Occupy Movement is what it appears. In fact, nothing from Arab Spring, to DHS policy and beyond is what it appears to be. We found unsettling relationships between people, elected and appointed officials, groups, and organizations that extend back many years.
Investigative integrity demands a deliberate blindness to political party affiliations, but not ignorance to political associations. Consequently, our results will most assuredly anger many on both sides of the political aisle. If it does, we’ll know that we’ve done our job. Our findings might also brand us as conspiracy theorists too. If so, we’ll know that we’ve done our job well. Our findings are bound to make some people nervous. We hope they do, as we will then know that we’ve put our investigative skills and experience to good use.Based on our investigative findings, we have arrived at a very startling and irrefutable conclusion. We are witnessing the orchestrated destruction of America. Soon, in the streets of the U.S., we will see some of the most violent events in modern history take place, likely to result in the implementation of public curfews, restrictions on travel, and possibly even Martial Law. That appears to be the plan. It is not a new plan, but one that has been in the works since the early twentieth century. We have created an in-depth report that reveals the individuals and groups behind these events, their motives, tactics and methods. The following is a summary of that report and our investigative findings.
Occupy is a sophisticated operation
To call the Occupy Movement a movement is to do it an injustice. We have found that it is an operation launched by the very same people who should be the actual targets of the protesters. Instead, it is the one percent global elite who are organizing, directing, and funding the operation behind the scenes. Their purpose is to create chaos and deflect the blame away from the actual financial terrorists to targets of lesser importance.It is exactly this chaos that served as justification of the recent legislation redefining domestic extremists. The financial looting of America and other sovereign nations by the big banks, politicians and crony capitalists is beginning to unravel. When the curtain is pulled back and the true perpetrators are exposed, there will be rampant chaos in the streets of America. The politicians, bankers, Federal Reserve, and other individuals of prominence and perpetrators know this. Consequently, the U.S. government enacted legislation in anticipation of the public outrage.
Empathy as a tactic
Most of us can empathize with the 99 percent as we are the 99 percent to the extent that we are not among those societal elites with great wealth, power, influence and who are seemingly above the law who are responsible for the ills of our society.It is not only easy to generate empathy from such a large pool of people, it is the primary tactic of this operation. After all, it is you, the readers, and us, the investigators who work increasingly longer hours just to keep up with expenses, trying to pay our bills on time while the elite exhibit unprecedented hubris and vile contempt for the masses. Sympathy for them? Hardly. Accordingly, it is easy to identify with the 99 percent while setting aside other differences.
Definitions changed
In the case of the occupy operation, definitions of the opposing groups have been deliberately and maliciously changed by the media, social and political commentators, and the orchestrators of the operation. The one percent are not those who earn more than $506,000 per year as defined by The Wall Street Journal, but are a much more elite group of individuals. Therein lies the first layer of obfuscation intentionally created and constantly repeated by the covert powers behind the occupy operation.Additionally, legitimate capitalism, which is the financial backbone of America and has been responsible for the success of our great nation - not its downfall, has been purposely demonized by its merger with crony capitalism. Crony capitalism is the incestuous bonding between business and government, the use of influence, inside information, and other illegal and immoral activity that enriches those in government and private individuals. It is this intentional merging of legitimate and crony capitalism that obfuscates the problem and provides a layer for protection for the crony capitalists themselves.Perhaps one of the most important factors that must be fully understood is this: crony capitalism transcends political parties and creates some very interesting alliances. Accordingly, one must remove the blinders of political partisanship to understand that the Democrat-Republican paradigm has been successfully destroyed nearly beyond recognition - and perhaps to the point of no return. Unfortunately, too few are willing to do so, claiming that such assertions belong in the bin of historical conspiracy nonsense. Some are unwilling due to lack of investigation or understanding, while others refuse as they reap rewards of financial gain and positions of power.
History is key
Most trace the beginning of the American occupy operation to the September 2011 occupation of Zuccotti Park in New York City by individuals protesting economic inequality. Within a month, similar protests were taking place in nearly 600 communities in the U.S. and 95 cities worldwide.Much like the inappropriately termed Arab spring.we were told by the media that these protests benefitted the oppressed, were largely spontaneous and without any leadership or organizational structure beyond the occasional tweet or mention in the social media. While right-wing talk show hosts, pundits and bloggers described occupy group members as human flea circuses in need of discipline and a good shower, the left presented them as courageous people taking a stand against social injustice created by a rigged economic system.Although there are elements of truth in each description, both sides are guilty of failing to break free of their political bias to provide their respective audiences the unadulterated truth about the occupy operation. As a result, unnecessary polarization among Americans is heightened by their words and writings, many who could relate to the injustices but had little sympathy for those who are denied justice. In some cases, the political pundits have become unwitting participants of the growing social divide, playing directly into the hands of the operation’s architects. In other cases, they are willful facilitators working with them.All one has to do is to look at history to learn that the 99 percent was first referenced in 1947 within UNESCO (an acronym for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), an arm of the United Nations.It was referenced by the mother of all globalist entities, the UN, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The importance of the slogan as used in the last century through the present cannot be underestimated. We must recognize that the distinction, as well as the general ideology behind it, originates from the same template used by Woodrow Wilson, Colonel Mandel House, FDR, the United Nations, activists of the 1960s through today.
The financial model that has exacerbated the economic train wreck of America can also be traced to the United Nation’s Monetary and Financial Conference (or Bretton Woods Conference) in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. John Maynard Keynes of England and Harry Dexter White of the United States, drafted a plan to stabilize the world economy. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was drafted and ultimately signed in 1947, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (a/k/a the World Bank) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) were established.Keynesian economics, which advocate a strong government role in private commerce and a favorite of globalists, is the current economic model in use by this administration. The path was also paved by such bipartisan financial initiatives as NAFTA, the SPP and the like.Looking closer at those who were in positions of power and influence during pivotal points in history, and who had and have influence within our government during the passage of such legislation as NAFTA, the SPP, as well as the more draconian legislation such as the NDAA and others laws, both today and in history, we found direct ties to controversial organizations such as the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the attendees of the Bildeberg Group. It is our professional opinion, based on extensive research, timelines and contacts, that these groups exist solely for the one percent,and the members set the agenda in the U.S. and globally. One might chuckle at the thought and call it nonsense, but the evidence proves otherwise.When the operational layers are pulled back, we begin to see that the cries for changing the economic inequities that spawned previous and recent financial crises are actually being made under the umbrella of world governance.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. Remember the riots of 1968? Our findings suggest that they will pale in comparison to what is on the immediate horizon.The decade of the sixties saw the re-birth of Marxist-Communist groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), The Weathermen (or Revolutionary Youth Movement), the Progressive Labor Party, the Black Panther Party (BPP), the Communist Party USA (CP-USA), and the Nation of Islam (NOI).A paperback book published by U.S. News & World Report in 1970 titled Communism and the New Left describes demonstrators embracing leaders such as Che Guevara, Castro, and Mao Tse-tung as the civil unrest of the late 1960s unfolded. The compilation of magazine reports link the 1968 protests, for example, with the resurgence of Marxist and Communist principles, and further link the leadership of the protesters with those ideologies.Those specifically identified include individuals such as Bernadine Dohrn and Willaim Ayers, names that are very familiar today. It is the perfect linking between the ideology of the globalists with a strong propensity for Keynesian economics, crony capitalism as facilitated in the U.S. by the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Treasury, numerous lawmakers, with the tactics of Saul Alinsky, and the ultimate leadership from the executive branch to Progressive foot soldiers and actual domestic terrorists including, but not limited to William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn and others.Much has taken place that set up the perfect storm of today. From Woodrow Wilson to Nixon, Bush, Clinton and Obama, from the establishment of the Federal Reserve to the repealing of the Glass-Steagall Act, the environment that exists today was made for the looting of America.One must keep in mind that the stage was set by both Republicans and Democrats, former and current occupants of the House and Senate, along with each President over the last century that brought us to this point. The Obama factor
One of the final stages of the globalist agenda, however, occurred with the selection of a virtual unknown community organizer from Chicago with a Marxist-Communist ideology and heritage to be the President of the U.S.¬† Barack Hussein Obama, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, was also groomed for his current position by the powers of the CFR and Trilateral Commission. Specifically, it was Zbigniew Brzezinski and David Rockefeller who served as his foreign policy advisors.Few questioned who and what was behind the meteoric rise of a virtual unknown junior senator from Illinois. In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to select members of her district at the home of two previously referenced figures: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.The media was forgiving when it was disclosed that Obama, as an Illinois state senator in 2001, accepted a $200 contribution from Ayers, a founding member of the group that bombed the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon during the 1970s.The media stood firm that there was virtually no connection between Obama and Ayers, who also penned his memoir, Fugitive Days which was published in 2001. They also glossed over Ayers’ comments published in the September 11, 2001 edition of The New York Times when he said: I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.The media and Obama fact-checking web sites downplayed the fact that Ayers and Obama served together for three years on the nine-member board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago based nonprofit. They also downplayed their joint appearance on two academic panels in 1997 and 2001. Like Dohrn, Ayers served as a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.The media was first absent then forgiving to candidate Barack Hussein Obama when the flag of Che Guevara, an Argentine Marxist revolutionary was hanging in plain view on the wall of one of Obama’s campaign offices in early 2008. They were equally forgiving about the ornament that featured the portrait of Mao Tse-tung hanging on the 2009 White House Christmas Tree. It appeared that few understood the implications represented by that image alone, and the change that was intended for the U.S.
The corporate media and progressives in power and public influence deflected any due diligence background investigation of this unknown by frequently calling upon the race issue, which remains a very effective tactic today. Yet, the legitimate questions that have been asked yet never answered have absolutely nothing to do with race, but of concern for our country.It would do us well to look twice at those who mock and ridicule anyone who questions the legitimacy of Barack Hussein Obama as President. The reader might find this difficult to believe after the onslaught of media assertions to the contrary, but the simple fact is that we really do not know who we have put in the White House, including his legal name. Obama was never properly vetted, and despite claims to the contrary, never submitted an actual hardcopy of his long form birth certificate to any legitimate body for review and examination. Just saying he did does not make it so.Furthermore, why the secrecy surrounding the release of his other records? Passport records, school records, and so on? Why has he spent so much money fighting their release? Ridicule if you must, Obama would not pass any background investigation we would perform for a position on any board of directors of a Fortune 100 company in light of what little he has personally provided, along with his refusal to turn over other records related to his past. Yet, he sits in the White House at such a precipitous time in our history. His placement there was no accident, and his election was not some serendipitous event in U.S. history.Meanwhile, crony capitalism - birthed by the creation of the Federal Reserve and exploited by career politicians and their financial counterparts- made significant inroads over the last few decades, exacerbating pre-existing societal divides. A perfect storm is now brewing.Now, when the terrorist ideology of the radical left is combined with the effects of crony capitalism, we have a much more fertile environment for orchestrated social unrest than at any other time in history. Add to that an elected president with a communist heritage who launched his political career in the Ayers/Dohrn household, the timing is anything but coincidental, and the path to chaos should be quite clear.Buckle up, America. Unlike the plethora of fake terror alerts that former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge admitted were issued for political propaganda, this one is very serious indeed.US intelligence officials last week upped the rhetoric against Iran during congressional testimony by claiming that Tehran is prepared to launch reprisal attacks inside the United States.Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. cited the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador on U.S. soil as a sign that,Some Iranian officials — probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — have changed their calculus and are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime.
As we documented at the time, according to retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer, no information concerning the supposed plot even existed within FBI channels, strongly suggesting the story was manufactured by the Obama administration. The New York Times also reported that the dubious nature of the plot caused a wave of puzzlement and skepticism from some foreign leaders and outside experts.Advocates of an attack on Iran have implied that the US could stage a provocation as a pretext for a military assault. In January 2008, Dick Cheney’s office considered staging an incident to be blamed on Iran wherein US ships patrolling the Strait of Hormuz were attacked.Despite the sordid history of lies that were manufactured about weapons of mass destruction, Niger yellowcake and dodgy dossiers to justify the invasion of Iraq in 2003, we’re seeing history repeat itself as the US seeks to exploit another artificial crisis as a pretext to back the Israeli attack on Iran.
Numerous examples since Obama took office illustrate how his administration, and the intelligence agencies that surround it, are by no means reticent to brazenly lie and stage events for political purposes.Despite the Obama administration’s best efforts to characterize Operation Fast and Furious, an ATF program that sought to put U.S.-based firearms into the hands of Mexican drug smugglers, as little more than a screw up, the most damning evidence strongly indicates that the whole operation was in fact an attempt to launch a false flag assault on the second amendment rights of the American people.Obama himself told gun control advocate Sarah Brady last year that his administration was working under the radar to sneak attack the second amendment, just months before the Fast and Furious scandal leaked, and at the same time as administration officials were blaming violence in Mexico on the second amendment, when in reality the administration itself was responsible for arming the drug cartels.A further example of a false flag attempt under the current administration involves the Christmas Day underwear bomber, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, who was helped through security, despite him being on a terror watchlist with no passport, by a well dressed Indian man, on Christmas Day 2009.It later emerged that the State Department was ordered not to revoke Abdulmutallab’s visa by “federal counterterrorism officials” even though the accused bomber had known terrorist ties, in addition to the fact that his own father had warned U.S. intelligence officials of the threat posed by Abdulmutallab a month before the attempted attack.
While the public is being told that terrorists are about to strike on U.S. soil, the U.S. government itself has armed and funded Al-Qaeda terrorists in Libya to overthrow Gaddafi and is now backing Al-Qaeda groups in Iran to carry out bombings and assassinations in an effort to undermine the Ahmadinejad government. The same terrorists used in Libya were also subsequently airlifted into Syria as part of an effort to depose President Bashir Assad.It is crystal clear that the gigantic anti-terror apparatus itself, created in the aftermath of 9/11, is now being used against the American people, with citizens being trained to spy on each other under the auspices of Homeland Security’s See Something, Say Something campaign. To illustrate the absurdity of how far this reaches, hot dog sellers at the recent Super Bowl were trained by the TSA to spot terrorists.Both the DHS and the FBI are also characterizing mundane behavior, such as paying for a cup of coffee with cash, using a video camera, talking to police officers, wearing hoodies, driving vans, writing on a piece of paper, and using a cell phone recording application, all as indicators of terrorist activity.To top it all off, the Obama administration was also instrumental in passing a provision of the NDAA bill which authorizes the military to kidnap and incarcerate US citizens without trial, merely on the accusation that they may be terrorists.The environment of fear and paranoia that has been created as a result of all this makes fertile ground for the government to stage a crisis or manufacture an emergency situation that will be used to rally the American people around a number of different domestic and geopolitical agendas.

We hear so often about Muslims as victims of abuse in the West and combatants in the Arab Spring’s fight against tyranny. But, in fact, a wholly different kind of war is underway—an unrecognized battle costing thousands of lives. Christians are being killed in the Islamic world because of their religion. It is a rising genocide that ought to provoke global alarm.The portrayal of Muslims as victims or heroes is at best partially accurate. In recent years the violent oppression of Christian minorities has become the norm in Muslim-majority nations stretching from West Africa and the Middle East to South Asia and Oceania. In some countries it is governments and their agents that have burned churches and imprisoned parishioners. In others, rebel groups and vigilantes have taken matters into their own hands, murdering Christians and driving them from regions where their roots go back centuries.The media’s reticence on the subject no doubt has several sources. One may be fear of provoking additional violence. Another is most likely the influence of lobbying groups such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation—a kind of United Nations of Islam centered in Saudi Arabia—and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Over the past decade, these and similar groups have been remarkably successful in persuading leading public figures and journalists in the West to think of each and every example of perceived anti-Muslim discrimination as an expression of a systematic and sinister derangement called “Islamophobia”—a term that is meant to elicit the same moral disapproval as xenophobia or homophobia.
But a fair-minded assessment of recent events and trends leads to the conclusion that the scale and severity of Islamophobia pales in comparison with the bloody Christophobia currently coursing through Muslim-majority nations from one end of the globe to the other. The conspiracy of silence surrounding this violent expression of religious intolerance has to stop. Nothing less than the fate of Christianity—and ultimately of all religious minorities—in the Islamic world is at stake.
Egypt Coptic Christians
At least 24 Coptic Christians were killed in Cairo during clashes with the Egyptian Army on Oct. 9., Thomas Hartwell / Redux-From blasphemy laws to brutal murders to bombings to mutilations and the burning of holy sites, Christians in so many nations live in fear. In Nigeria many have suffered all of these forms of persecution. The nation has the largest Christian minority (40 percent) in proportion to its population (160 million) of any majority-Muslim country. For years, Muslims and Christians in Nigeria have lived on the edge of civil war. Islamist radicals provoke much if not most of the tension. The newest such organization is an outfit that calls itself Boko Haram, which means Western education is sacrilege.Its aim is to establish Sharia in Nigeria. To this end it has stated that it will kill all Christians in the country.In the month of January 2012 alone, Boko Haram was responsible for 54 deaths. In 2011 its members killed at least 510 people and burned down or destroyed more than 350 churches in 10 northern states. They use guns, gasoline bombs, and even machetes, shouting Allahu akbar (God is great) while launching attacks on unsuspecting citizens. They have attacked churches, a Christmas Day gathering (killing 42 Catholics), beer parlors, a town hall, beauty salons, and banks. They have so far focused on killing Christian clerics, politicians, students, policemen, and soldiers, as well as Muslim clerics who condemn their mayhem. While they started out by using crude methods like hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes in 2009, the latest AP reports indicate that the group’s recent attacks show a new level of potency and sophistication.The Christophobia that has plagued Sudan for years takes a very different form. The authoritarian government of the Sunni Muslim north of the country has for decades tormented Christian and animist minorities in the south. What has often been described as a civil war is in practice the Sudanese government’s sustained persecution of religious minorities. This persecution culminated in the infamous genocide in Darfur that began in 2003. Even though Sudan’s Muslim president, Omar al-Bashir, has been indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which charged him with three counts of genocide, and despite the euphoria that greeted the semi-independence he grant-ed to South Sudan in July of last year, the violence has not ended. In South Kordofan, Christians are still subject-ed to aerial bombardment, targeted killings, the kidnap-ping of children, and other atrocities. Reports from the United Nations indicate that between 53,000 and 75,000 innocent civilians have been displaced from their resi-dences and that houses and buildings have been looted and destroyed.
Both kinds of persecution—undertaken by extragovernmental groups as well as by agents of the state—have come together in Egypt in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. On Oct. 9 of last year in the Maspero area of Cairo, Coptic Christians (who make up roughly 11 percent of Egypt’s population of 81 million) marched in protest against a wave of attacks by Islamists—including church burnings, rapes, mutilations, and murders—that followed the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorship. During the protest, Egyptian security forces drove their trucks into the crowd and fired on protesters, crushing and killing at least 24 and wounding more than 300 people. By the end of the year more than 200,000 Copts had fled their homes in anticipation of more attacks. With Islamists poised to gain much greater power in the wake of recent elections, their fears appear to be justified.Egypt is not the only Arab country that seems bent on wiping out its Christian minority. Since 2003 more than 900 Iraqi Christians (most of them Assyrians) have been killed by terrorist violence in Baghdad alone, and 70 churches have been burned, according to the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA). Thousands of Iraqi Christians have fled as a result of violence directed specifically at them, reducing the number of Christians in the country to fewer than half a million from just over a million before 2003. AINA understandably describes this as an incipient genocide or ethnic cleansing of Assyrians in Iraq.The 2.8 million Christians who live in Pakistan make up only about 1.6 percent of the population of more than 170 million. As members of such a tiny minority, they live in perpetual fear not only of Islamist terrorists but also of Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws. There is, for example, the notorious case of a Christian woman who was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. When international pressure persuaded Punjab Gov. Salman Taseer to explore ways of freeing her, he was killed by his bodyguard. The bodyguard was then celebrated by prominent Muslim clerics as a hero—and though he was sentenced to death late last year, the judge who imposed the sentence now lives in hiding, fearing for his life.
Such cases are not unusual in Pakistan. The nation’s blasphemy laws are routinely used by criminals and intolerant Pakistani Muslims to bully religious minorities. Simply to declare belief in the Christian Trinity is considered blasphemous, since it contradicts mainstream Muslim theological doctrines. When a Christian group is suspected of transgressing the blasphemy laws, the consequences can be brutal. Just ask the members of the Christian aid group World Vision. Its offices were attacked in the spring of 2010 by 10 gunmen armed with grenades, leaving six people dead and four wounded. A militant Muslim group claimed responsibility for the attack on the grounds that World Vision was working to subvert Islam. (In fact, it was helping the survivors of a major earthquake.)

At least 13 people were killed and 140 injured on March 8, 2011, when participants in a large Christian demonstration in a Cairo slum were attacked by residents of a surrounding neighborhood., Mohamed Omar / EPA-Landov-Not even Indonesia—often touted as the world’s most tolerant, democratic, and modern majority-Muslim nation—has been immune to the fevers of Christophobia. According to data compiled by the Christian Post, the number of violent incidents committed against religious minorities (and at 7 percent of the population, Christians are the country’s largest minority) increased by nearly 40 percent, from 198 to 276, between 2010 and 2011.The litany of suffering could be extended. In Iran dozens of Christians have been arrested and jailed for daring to worship outside of the officially sanctioned church system. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, deserves to be placed in a category of its own. Despite the fact that more than a million Christians live in the country as foreign workers, churches and even private acts of Christian prayer are banned; to enforce these totalitarian restrictions, the religious police regularly raid the homes of Christians and bring them up on charges of blasphemy in courts where their testimony carries less legal weight than a Muslim’s. Even in Ethiopia, where Christians make up a majority of the population, church burnings by members of the Muslim minority have become a problem.It should be clear from this catalog of atrocities that anti-Christian violence is a major and underreported problem. No, the violence isn’t centrally planned or coordinated by some international Islamist agency. In that sense the global war on Christians isn’t a traditional war at all. It is, rather, a spontaneous expression of anti-Christian animus by Muslims that transcends cultures, regions, and ethnicities.
As Nina Shea, director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, pointed out in an interview with Newsweek, Christian minorities in many majority-Muslim nations have lost the protection of their societies. This is especially so in countries with growing radical Islamist (Salafist) movements. In those nations, vigilantes often feel they can act with impunity—and government inaction often proves them right. The old idea of the Ottoman Turks—that non-Muslims in Muslim societies deserve protection (albeit as second-class citizens)—has all but vanished from wide swaths of the Islamic world, and increasingly the result is bloodshed and oppression.So let us please get our priorities straight. Yes, Western governments should protect Muslim minorities from intolerance. And of course we should ensure that they can worship, live, and work freely and without fear. It is the protection of the freedom of conscience and speech that distinguishes free societies from unfree ones. But we also need to keep perspective about the scale and severity of intolerance. Cartoons, films, and writings are one thing; knives, guns, and grenades are something else entirely.As for what the West can do to help religious minorities in Muslim-majority societies, my answer is that it needs to begin using the billions of dollars in aid it gives to the offending countries as leverage. Then there is trade and investment. Besides diplomatic pressure, these aid and trade relationships can and should be made conditional on the protection of the freedom of conscience and worship for all citizens.Instead of falling for overblown tales of Western Islamophobia, let’s take a real stand against the Christophobia infecting the Muslim world. JUNE 2001 - The E.C. Parliament has confirmed (admitted?) the existence of the communications intelligence and information exchange network called ECHELON.
This global network of wiretaps, data-sniffing and general eavesdropping systems enables the U.S. government (and probably the U.K.) to intercept digital communications. In effect this means that , amongst other activities, ECHELON is capable of recording all email messages and all telephone conversations - regardless of who is making them. ECHELON is based at Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire U.K - rumours of its existence have circulated for years.
ECHELON does not require a suspicion element to monitor any communications and can ,therefore, snoop into innocent peoples personal data. An E.C. spokesman stated that there is good reason to believe that information has been obtained by ECHELON by illegally monitoring private emails.Amongst other things the French government is sure that commercial contracts have been lost to the U.S. (Including an Airbus contract with Saudi Arabia) despite U.S. denials. Unless encrypted ,any persons communications ,from any location can be snooped upon - in fact it is suspected that all European emails and telephone communications are automatically recorded at Menwith Hill.

From the National Security Agency's imposing headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland, ringed by a double-chain fence topped by barbed wire with strands of electrified wire between them, America bugs the world.Nothing politically or militarily significant, whether mentioned in a telephone call, in a conversation in the office of the secretary general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, or in a company fax or e-mail, escapes its attention.Its computers - measured in acres occupied by them rather than simple figures - vacuum the entire electromagnetic spectrum, homing in on key words which may suggest something of interest to NSA customers is being conveyed.The NSA costs at least $3.5bn (£1.9bn) a year to run. It employs at least 20,000 officers (not counting the 100,000 servicemen and civilians around the world over whom it has control). Its shredders process 40 tons of paper a day.Its junior partner is Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the eavesdropping organisation for which Katharine Gun worked. Like NSA, GCHQ is a highly secret operation. Until 1983, when one of its officers, Geoffrey Prime, was charged with spying for the Russians, the Government had refused to reveal what GCHQ's real role was, no doubt because its operations in peacetime were without a legal basis. Its security is maintained by massive and deliberately intimidating security.
Newspapers have been discouraged from mentioning it; a book by a former GCHQ officer, Jock Kane, was seized by Special Branch police officers and a still photograph of its headquarters was banned by the Independent Broadcasting Authority, leaving a blank screen during a World in Action programme. As with NSA, the size of GCHQ's staff at Cheltenham, about 6,500, gives no real indication of its strength. It has monitoring stations in Cyprus, West Germany, and Australia and smaller ones elsewhere. Much of its overseas work is done by service personnel.Its budget is thought to be more than £300m a year. A large part of this is funded by the United States in return for the right to run NSA listening stations in Britain - Chicksands, Bedfordshire; Edzell, Scotland; Mentworth Hill, Harrogate; Brawdy, Wales - and on British territory around the world.

The collaboration between the two agencies offers many advantages to both. Not only does it make monitoring the globe easier, it solves tricky legal problems and is the basis of the Prime Minister's statement yesterday that all Britain's bugging is lawful. The two agencies simply swap each other's dirty work.GCHQ eavesdrops on calls made by American citizens and the NSA monitors calls made by British citizens, thus allowing each government plausibly to deny it has tapped its own citizens' calls, as they do. The NSA station at Menwith Hill intercepts all international telephone calls made from Britain and GCHQ has a list of American citizens whose phone conversations interest the NSA.The NSA request to GCHQ for help in bugging the diplomats from those nations who were holding out for a second Security Council resolution to authorise an attack on Iraq is unsurprising. Nor is it surprising that both organisations wanted to provide their political masters with recordings of private conversations of high-ranking international diplomats.It is not difficult. Listening bugs can be planted in phones, electrical plugs, desk lamps and book spines. Given a clear line of sight, one device enables someone to detect and and interpret sound waves vibrating against the glass window panes of an office.Bugging the world is not the problem. The problem is avoiding drowning in a sea of information. We should not be surprised that GCHQ and NSA eavesdrop on us. We pay them to do it. We should be asking: Do they earn their keep? And, unless we get a few more whistle-blowers like Ms Gun, we will not know, because both agencies surround themselves with a wall of secrecy.
WHO DO WE BUG?
Although under domestic law GCHQ needs a warrant from the Home Secretary to tap telephones in Britain, it can do so abroad without such authorisation.But the United Nations headquarters in New York is considered sovereign territory, and placing a bug there would be illegal under international law.Intelligence services spy on hostile and friendly countries, the latter mainly for commercial reasons, but also to gain an edge in diplomatic negotiations. Nato allies are not always immune from intelligence operations by Britain.Staff working for the UN inspection teams in Iraq were convinced they were under surveillance.France, Germany and Russia complained of a rise in espionage against them. There was intense activity directed at Jordan and Syria, as well as Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Egypt.Officials say the only shock about Katharine Gun's discovery of an e-mail from the National Security Agency is that she was surprised by it.The WHY? Given the fact that the US and Israel are both yearning for a casus belli to launch an attack on Iran, added to recent history where a staged provocation was considered, and in addition to the innumerable examples of false flags overseen by the Obama administration alone, the threat of staged terror has never been greater.
Unlike the plethora of fake terror alerts that former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge admitted were issued for political propaganda, this one is very serious indeed.US intelligence officials last week upped the rhetoric against Iran during congressional testimony by claiming that Tehran is prepared to launch reprisal attacks inside the United States.Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. cited the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate a Saudi ambassador on U.S. soil as a sign that,Some Iranian officials — probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — have changed their calculus and are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived U.S. actions that threaten the regime.
As we documented at the time, according to retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer, no information concerning the supposed plot even existed within FBI channels, strongly suggesting the story was manufactured by the Obama administration. The New York Times also reported that the dubious nature of the plot caused a wave of puzzlement and skepticism from some foreign leaders and outside experts.Advocates of an attack on Iran have implied that the US could stage a provocation as a pretext for a military assault. In January 2008, Dick Cheney’s office considered staging an incident to be blamed on Iran wherein US ships patrolling the Strait of Hormuz were attacked.Despite the sordid history of lies that were manufactured about weapons of mass destruction, Niger yellowcake and dodgy dossiers to justify the invasion of Iraq in 2003, we’re seeing history repeat itself as the US seeks to exploit another artificial crisis as a pretext to back the Israeli attack on Iran.
Numerous examples since Obama took office illustrate how his administration, and the intelligence agencies that surround it, are by no means reticent to brazenly lie and stage events for political purposes.Despite the Obama administration’s best efforts to characterize Operation Fast and Furious, an ATF program that sought to put U.S.-based firearms into the hands of Mexican drug smugglers, as little more than a screw up, the most damning evidence strongly indicates that the whole operation was in fact an attempt to launch a false flag assault on the second amendment rights of the American people.Obama himself told gun control advocate Sarah Brady last year that his administration was working under the radar to sneak attack the second amendment, just months before the Fast and Furious scandal leaked, and at the same time as administration officials were blaming violence in Mexico on the second amendment, when in reality the administration itself was responsible for arming the drug cartels.A further example of a false flag attempt under the current administration involves the Christmas Day underwear bomber, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, who was helped through security, despite him being on a terror watchlist with no passport, by a well dressed Indian man, on Christmas Day 2009.It later emerged that the State Department was ordered not to revoke Abdulmutallab’s visa by “federal counterterrorism officials” even though the accused bomber had known terrorist ties, in addition to the fact that his own father had warned U.S. intelligence officials of the threat posed by Abdulmutallab a month before the attempted attack.
While the public is being told that terrorists are about to strike on U.S. soil, the U.S. government itself has armed and funded Al-Qaeda terrorists in Libya to overthrow Gaddafi and is now backing Al-Qaeda groups in Iran to carry out bombings and assassinations in an effort to undermine the Ahmadinejad government. The same terrorists used in Libya were also subsequently airlifted into Syria as part of an effort to depose President Bashir Assad.It is crystal clear that the gigantic anti-terror apparatus itself, created in the aftermath of 9/11, is now being used against the American people, with citizens being trained to spy on each other under the auspices of Homeland Security’s See Something, Say Something campaign. To illustrate the absurdity of how far this reaches, hot dog sellers at the recent Super Bowl were trained by the TSA to spot terrorists.Both the DHS and the FBI are also characterizing mundane behavior, such as paying for a cup of coffee with cash, using a video camera, talking to police officers, wearing hoodies, driving vans, writing on a piece of paper, and using a cell phone recording application, all as indicators of terrorist activity.To top it all off, the Obama administration was also instrumental in passing a provision of the NDAA bill which authorizes the military to kidnap and incarcerate US citizens without trial, merely on the accusation that they may be terrorists.The environment of fear and paranoia that has been created as a result of all this makes fertile ground for the government to stage a crisis or manufacture an emergency situation that will be used to rally the American people around a number of different domestic and geopolitical agendas.

We hear so often about Muslims as victims of abuse in the West and combatants in the Arab Spring’s fight against tyranny. But, in fact, a wholly different kind of war is underway—an unrecognized battle costing thousands of lives. Christians are being killed in the Islamic world because of their religion. It is a rising genocide that ought to provoke global alarm.The portrayal of Muslims as victims or heroes is at best partially accurate. In recent years the violent oppression of Christian minorities has become the norm in Muslim-majority nations stretching from West Africa and the Middle East to South Asia and Oceania. In some countries it is governments and their agents that have burned churches and imprisoned parishioners. In others, rebel groups and vigilantes have taken matters into their own hands, murdering Christians and driving them from regions where their roots go back centuries.The media’s reticence on the subject no doubt has several sources. One may be fear of provoking additional violence. Another is most likely the influence of lobbying groups such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation—a kind of United Nations of Islam centered in Saudi Arabia—and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Over the past decade, these and similar groups have been remarkably successful in persuading leading public figures and journalists in the West to think of each and every example of perceived anti-Muslim discrimination as an expression of a systematic and sinister derangement called “Islamophobia”—a term that is meant to elicit the same moral disapproval as xenophobia or homophobia.
But a fair-minded assessment of recent events and trends leads to the conclusion that the scale and severity of Islamophobia pales in comparison with the bloody Christophobia currently coursing through Muslim-majority nations from one end of the globe to the other. The conspiracy of silence surrounding this violent expression of religious intolerance has to stop. Nothing less than the fate of Christianity—and ultimately of all religious minorities—in the Islamic world is at stake.

At least 24 Coptic Christians were killed in Cairo during clashes with the Egyptian Army on Oct. 9., Thomas Hartwell / Redux-From blasphemy laws to brutal murders to bombings to mutilations and the burning of holy sites, Christians in so many nations live in fear. In Nigeria many have suffered all of these forms of persecution. The nation has the largest Christian minority (40 percent) in proportion to its population (160 million) of any majority-Muslim country. For years, Muslims and Christians in Nigeria have lived on the edge of civil war. Islamist radicals provoke much if not most of the tension. The newest such organization is an outfit that calls itself Boko Haram, which means Western education is sacrilege.Its aim is to establish Sharia in Nigeria. To this end it has stated that it will kill all Christians in the country.In the month of January 2012 alone, Boko Haram was responsible for 54 deaths. In 2011 its members killed at least 510 people and burned down or destroyed more than 350 churches in 10 northern states. They use guns, gasoline bombs, and even machetes, shouting Allahu akbar (God is great) while launching attacks on unsuspecting citizens. They have attacked churches, a Christmas Day gathering (killing 42 Catholics), beer parlors, a town hall, beauty salons, and banks. They have so far focused on killing Christian clerics, politicians, students, policemen, and soldiers, as well as Muslim clerics who condemn their mayhem. While they started out by using crude methods like hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes in 2009, the latest AP reports indicate that the group’s recent attacks show a new level of potency and sophistication.The Christophobia that has plagued Sudan for years takes a very different form. The authoritarian government of the Sunni Muslim north of the country has for decades tormented Christian and animist minorities in the south. What has often been described as a civil war is in practice the Sudanese government’s sustained persecution of religious minorities. This persecution culminated in the infamous genocide in Darfur that began in 2003. Even though Sudan’s Muslim president, Omar al-Bashir, has been indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which charged him with three counts of genocide, and despite the euphoria that greeted the semi-independence he grant-ed to South Sudan in July of last year, the violence has not ended. In South Kordofan, Christians are still subject-ed to aerial bombardment, targeted killings, the kidnap-ping of children, and other atrocities. Reports from the United Nations indicate that between 53,000 and 75,000 innocent civilians have been displaced from their resi-dences and that houses and buildings have been looted and destroyed.
Both kinds of persecution—undertaken by extragovernmental groups as well as by agents of the state—have come together in Egypt in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. On Oct. 9 of last year in the Maspero area of Cairo, Coptic Christians (who make up roughly 11 percent of Egypt’s population of 81 million) marched in protest against a wave of attacks by Islamists—including church burnings, rapes, mutilations, and murders—that followed the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak’s dictatorship. During the protest, Egyptian security forces drove their trucks into the crowd and fired on protesters, crushing and killing at least 24 and wounding more than 300 people. By the end of the year more than 200,000 Copts had fled their homes in anticipation of more attacks. With Islamists poised to gain much greater power in the wake of recent elections, their fears appear to be justified.Egypt is not the only Arab country that seems bent on wiping out its Christian minority. Since 2003 more than 900 Iraqi Christians (most of them Assyrians) have been killed by terrorist violence in Baghdad alone, and 70 churches have been burned, according to the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA). Thousands of Iraqi Christians have fled as a result of violence directed specifically at them, reducing the number of Christians in the country to fewer than half a million from just over a million before 2003. AINA understandably describes this as an incipient genocide or ethnic cleansing of Assyrians in Iraq.The 2.8 million Christians who live in Pakistan make up only about 1.6 percent of the population of more than 170 million. As members of such a tiny minority, they live in perpetual fear not only of Islamist terrorists but also of Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws. There is, for example, the notorious case of a Christian woman who was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. When international pressure persuaded Punjab Gov. Salman Taseer to explore ways of freeing her, he was killed by his bodyguard. The bodyguard was then celebrated by prominent Muslim clerics as a hero—and though he was sentenced to death late last year, the judge who imposed the sentence now lives in hiding, fearing for his life.
Such cases are not unusual in Pakistan. The nation’s blasphemy laws are routinely used by criminals and intolerant Pakistani Muslims to bully religious minorities. Simply to declare belief in the Christian Trinity is considered blasphemous, since it contradicts mainstream Muslim theological doctrines. When a Christian group is suspected of transgressing the blasphemy laws, the consequences can be brutal. Just ask the members of the Christian aid group World Vision. Its offices were attacked in the spring of 2010 by 10 gunmen armed with grenades, leaving six people dead and four wounded. A militant Muslim group claimed responsibility for the attack on the grounds that World Vision was working to subvert Islam. (In fact, it was helping the survivors of a major earthquake.)

According to data compiled by the Christian Post, the number of violent incidents committed against religious minorities (and at 7 percent of the population, Christians are the country’s largest minority) increased by nearly 40 percent, from 198 to 276, between 2010 and 2011.The litany of suffering could be extended. In Iran dozens of Christians have been arrested and jailed for daring to worship outside of the officially sanctioned church system. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, deserves to be placed in a category of its own. Despite the fact that more than a million Christians live in the country as foreign workers, churches and even private acts of Christian prayer are banned; to enforce these totalitarian restrictions, the religious police regularly raid the homes of Christians and bring them up on charges of blasphemy in courts where their testimony carries less legal weight than a Muslim’s. Even in Ethiopia, where Christians make up a majority of the population, church burnings by members of the Muslim minority have become a problem.It should be clear from this catalog of atrocities that anti-Christian violence is a major and underreported problem. No, the violence isn’t centrally planned or coordinated by some international Islamist agency. In that sense the global war on Christians isn’t a traditional war at all. It is, rather, a spontaneous expression of anti-Christian animus by Muslims that transcends cultures, regions, and ethnicities.
As Nina Shea, director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, pointed out in an interview with Newsweek, Christian minorities in many majority-Muslim nations have lost the protection of their societies. This is especially so in countries with growing radical Islamist (Salafist) movements. In those nations, vigilantes often feel they can act with impunity—and government inaction often proves them right. The old idea of the Ottoman Turks—that non-Muslims in Muslim societies deserve protection (albeit as second-class citizens)—has all but vanished from wide swaths of the Islamic world, and increasingly the result is bloodshed and oppression.So let us please get our priorities straight. Yes, Western governments should protect Muslim minorities from intolerance. And of course we should ensure that they can worship, live, and work freely and without fear. It is the protection of the freedom of conscience and speech that distinguishes free societies from unfree ones. But we also need to keep perspective about the scale and severity of intolerance. Cartoons, films, and writings are one thing; knives, guns, and grenades are something else entirely.As for what the West can do to help religious minorities in Muslim-majority societies, my answer is that it needs to begin using the billions of dollars in aid it gives to the offending countries as leverage. Then there is trade and investment. Besides diplomatic pressure, these aid and trade relationships can and should be made conditional on the protection of the freedom of conscience and worship for all citizens.Instead of falling for overblown tales of Western Islamophobia, let’s take a real stand against the Christophobia infecting the Muslim world. JUNE 2001 - The E.C. Parliament has confirmed (admitted?) the existence of the communications intelligence and information exchange network called ECHELON.
This global network of wiretaps, data-sniffing and general eavesdropping systems enables the U.S. government (and probably the U.K.) to intercept digital communications. In effect this means that , amongst other activities, ECHELON is capable of recording all email messages and all telephone conversations - regardless of who is making them. ECHELON is based at Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire U.K - rumours of its existence have circulated for years.
ECHELON does not require a suspicion element to monitor any communications and can ,therefore, snoop into innocent peoples personal data. An E.C. spokesman stated that there is good reason to believe that information has been obtained by ECHELON by illegally monitoring private emails.Amongst other things the French government is sure that commercial contracts have been lost to the U.S. (Including an Airbus contract with Saudi Arabia) despite U.S. denials. Unless encrypted ,any persons communications ,from any location can be snooped upon - in fact it is suspected that all European emails and telephone communications are automatically recorded at Menwith Hill.

From the National Security Agency's imposing headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland, ringed by a double-chain fence topped by barbed wire with strands of electrified wire between them, America bugs the world.Nothing politically or militarily significant, whether mentioned in a telephone call, in a conversation in the office of the secretary general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, or in a company fax or e-mail, escapes its attention.Its computers - measured in acres occupied by them rather than simple figures - vacuum the entire electromagnetic spectrum, homing in on key words which may suggest something of interest to NSA customers is being conveyed.The NSA costs at least $3.5bn (£1.9bn) a year to run. It employs at least 20,000 officers (not counting the 100,000 servicemen and civilians around the world over whom it has control). Its shredders process 40 tons of paper a day.Its junior partner is Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the eavesdropping organisation for which Katharine Gun worked. Like NSA, GCHQ is a highly secret operation. Until 1983, when one of its officers, Geoffrey Prime, was charged with spying for the Russians, the Government had refused to reveal what GCHQ's real role was, no doubt because its operations in peacetime were without a legal basis. Its security is maintained by massive and deliberately intimidating security.
Newspapers have been discouraged from mentioning it; a book by a former GCHQ officer, Jock Kane, was seized by Special Branch police officers and a still photograph of its headquarters was banned by the Independent Broadcasting Authority, leaving a blank screen during a World in Action programme. As with NSA, the size of GCHQ's staff at Cheltenham, about 6,500, gives no real indication of its strength. It has monitoring stations in Cyprus, West Germany, and Australia and smaller ones elsewhere. Much of its overseas work is done by service personnel.Its budget is thought to be more than £300m a year. A large part of this is funded by the United States in return for the right to run NSA listening stations in Britain - Chicksands, Bedfordshire; Edzell, Scotland; Mentworth Hill, Harrogate; Brawdy, Wales - and on British territory around the world.

The collaboration between the two agencies offers many advantages to both. Not only does it make monitoring the globe easier, it solves tricky legal problems and is the basis of the Prime Minister's statement yesterday that all Britain's bugging is lawful. The two agencies simply swap each other's dirty work.GCHQ eavesdrops on calls made by American citizens and the NSA monitors calls made by British citizens, thus allowing each government plausibly to deny it has tapped its own citizens' calls, as they do. The NSA station at Menwith Hill intercepts all international telephone calls made from Britain and GCHQ has a list of American citizens whose phone conversations interest the NSA.The NSA request to GCHQ for help in bugging the diplomats from those nations who were holding out for a second Security Council resolution to authorise an attack on Iraq is unsurprising. Nor is it surprising that both organisations wanted to provide their political masters with recordings of private conversations of high-ranking international diplomats.It is not difficult. Listening bugs can be planted in phones, electrical plugs, desk lamps and book spines. Given a clear line of sight, one device enables someone to detect and and interpret sound waves vibrating against the glass window panes of an office.Bugging the world is not the problem. The problem is avoiding drowning in a sea of information. We should not be surprised that GCHQ and NSA eavesdrop on us. We pay them to do it. We should be asking: Do they earn their keep? And, unless we get a few more whistle-blowers like Ms Gun, we will not know, because both agencies surround themselves with a wall of secrecy.
WHO DO WE BUG?
Although under domestic law GCHQ needs a warrant from the Home Secretary to tap telephones in Britain, it can do so abroad without such authorisation.But the United Nations headquarters in New York is considered sovereign territory, and placing a bug there would be illegal under international law.Intelligence services spy on hostile and friendly countries, the latter mainly for commercial reasons, but also to gain an edge in diplomatic negotiations. Nato allies are not always immune from intelligence operations by Britain.Staff working for the UN inspection teams in Iraq were convinced they were under surveillance.France, Germany and Russia complained of a rise in espionage against them. There was intense activity directed at Jordan and Syria, as well as Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Egypt.Officials say the only shock about Katharine Gun's discovery of an e-mail from the National Security Agency is that she was surprised by it.The WHY? A federal appeals court on Tuesday declared California's same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, putting the bitterly contested, voter-approved law on track for likely consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court.A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that a lower court judge correctly interpreted the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court precedents when he declared in 2010 that Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians.It was unclear when gay marriages might resume in California. Lawyers for Proposition 8 sponsors and for the two couples who successfully sued to overturn the ban have repeatedly said they would consider appealing to a larger panel of the court and then the U.S. Supreme Court if they did not receive a favorable ruling from the 9th Circuit.Although the Constitution permits communities to enact most laws they believe to be desirable, it requires that there be at least a legitimate reason for the passage of a law that treats different classes of people differently. There was no such reason that Proposition 8 could have been enacted,the ruling states.The panel also said there was no evidence that former Chief U.S. Judge Vaughn Walker was biased and should have disclosed before he issued his decision that he was gay and in a long-term relationship with another man.The ruling came more than a year after the appeals court heard arguments in the case.Proposition 8 backers had asked the 9th Circuit to set aside Walker's ruling on both constitutional grounds and because of the thorny issue of the judge's personal life. It was the first instance of an American jurist's sexual orientation being cited as grounds for overturning a court decision.
Walker publicly revealed he was gay after he retired. The 9th Circuit does not typically give notice of its forthcoming rulings, and its decision to do so Monday reflects the intense interest in the case.Even if the panel upholds the lower court ruling, it could be a while before same-sex couples can resume marrying in the state. Proposition 8's backers plan to appeal to a bigger 9th Circuit panel and then the U.S. Supreme Court if they lose in the intermediate court, which would likely put its ruling on hold while that process plays out.The three-judge panel, consisting of judges appointed by presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, heard oral arguments on the ban's constitutional implications more than a year ago. But it put off a decision so it could seek guidance from the California Supreme Court on whether Proposition 8's sponsors had legal authority to challenge the lower court ruling once California's attorney general and governor decided not to appeal it.The California court ruled in November that the state's vigorous citizens' initiative process grants the official proponents of ballot measures the right to defend their measures in court if state officials refuse to do so. While its reading is not binding on the federal court, the 9th Circuit's written heads-up suggests the panel accepted the Supreme Court's interpretation, legal observers said.
Further complicating the 9th Circuit's consideration of the case was a move in April by lawyers for the coalition of religious conservative groups that put Proposition 8 on the ballot seeking to have the lower federal court decision striking down the measure vacated because the now-retired judge who issued it was in a long-term relationship with another man.Former Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker disclosed he was gay and had a partner of 10 years after he retired from the bench last year. Proposition 8's backers have argued that Walker's relationship posed a potential conflict-of-interest and that he should have revealed it before he declared the measure unconstitutional in August 2010.Walker's successor as the chief federal judge in Northern California, James Ware, rejected their claims that Walker was unqualified to preside over the 13-day trial that preceded his ruling — the first in a federal court to examine if same-sex couples have a constitutional right to get married — because he stood to personally benefit from declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional.The 9th Circuit held a hearing on that question in December.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday declared California's same-sex marriage ban to be unconstitutional, putting the bitterly contested, voter-approved law on track for likely consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court.A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that a lower court judge correctly interpreted the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court precedents when he declared in 2010 that Proposition 8 was a violation of the civil rights of gays and lesbians.It was unclear when gay marriages might resume in California. Lawyers for Proposition 8 sponsors and for the two couples who successfully sued to overturn the ban have repeatedly said they would consider appealing to a larger panel of the court and then the U.S. Supreme Court if they did not receive a favorable ruling from the 9th Circuit.Although the Constitution permits communities to enact most laws they believe to be desirable, it requires that there be at least a legitimate reason for the passage of a law that treats different classes of people differently. There was no such reason that Proposition 8 could have been enacted,the ruling states.The panel also said there was no evidence that former Chief U.S. Judge Vaughn Walker was biased and should have disclosed before he issued his decision that he was gay and in a long-term relationship with another man.The ruling came more than a year after the appeals court heard arguments in the case.Proposition 8 backers had asked the 9th Circuit to set aside Walker's ruling on both constitutional grounds and because of the thorny issue of the judge's personal life. Bush, heard oral arguments on the ban's constitutional implications more than a year ago. BRUSSELS - A new deal between the European Commission and Catherine Ashton sheds light on how much power the EU executive still has on foreign relations.Coming one year after the launch of her European External Action Service (EEAS) and two years after the Lisbon Treaty, the so-called inter-service agreement - a 40-page paper dated 13 January and seen by EUobserver - details who does what in the EU's day-to-day dealings with foreign countries.It says the commission and the EEAS jointly plan overall spending strategies on the Union's €9.5-billion-a-year external relations budget.But development commissioner Andris Piebalgs, neighbourhood commissioner Stefan Fuele and aid commissioner Kristalina Georgieva keep full control of designing and implementing actual projects in the 104 countries and €7.5 billion covered by their portfolios.The EEAS shall refrain from taking any measures ... on issues which fall under commission competence,the agreement says.The commission also has part-control of three crisis management and pro-democracy funds - the so-called EIDHR, IfS and CFSP, worth €1 billion.
Ashton proposes EIDHR and IfS projects, but then Piebalgs' people take over and draft the final blueprints, while keeping EEAS staff fully informed and inviting them to their meetings. Ashton also proposes CFSP projects, but a commission office - the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments [FPI] - writes the assessment study used by EU countries to decide which ones go forward and writes the final blueprint.
Atop this, commission officials oversee how Ashton spends her €500-million-a-year internal budget.The service pact says her ambassadors will be tasked with timely, accurate and reliable reporting to the relevant commission AOD [Authorising Officer by Delegation], according to intervals and format decided on by the commission.It adds that commission auditors are to be involved on a permanent and ongoing basis, in virtually all the aspects of the financial administration of the EEAS.The commission even has power over Ashton's media relations. The FPI handles the EEAS press and communications budget. The last time the Palestinians held elections - in 2006 - Hamas won. But the EU refused to recognise the result and Israel reacted by arresting dozens of Hamas MPs.

BRUSSELS - A new deal between the European Commission and Catherine Ashton sheds light on how much power the EU executive still has on foreign relations.Coming one year after the launch of her European External Action Service (EEAS) and two years after the Lisbon Treaty, the so-called inter-service agreement - a 40-page paper dated 13 January and seen by EUobserver - details who does what in the EU's day-to-day dealings with foreign countries.It says the commission and the EEAS jointly plan overall spending strategies on the Union's €9.5-billion-a-year external relations budget.But development commissioner Andris Piebalgs, neighbourhood commissioner Stefan Fuele and aid commissioner Kristalina Georgieva keep full control of designing and implementing actual projects in the 104 countries and €7.5 billion covered by their portfolios.The EEAS shall refrain from taking any measures ... on issues which fall under commission competence,the agreement says.The commission also has part-control of three crisis management and pro-democracy funds - the so-called EIDHR, IfS and CFSP, worth €1 billion.
Ashton proposes EIDHR and IfS projects, but then Piebalgs' people take over and draft the final blueprints, while keeping EEAS staff fully informed and inviting them to their meetings. Ashton also proposes CFSP projects, but a commission office - the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments [FPI] - writes the assessment study used by EU countries to decide which ones go forward and writes the final blueprint.
Atop this, commission officials oversee how Ashton spends her €500-million-a-year internal budget.The service pact says her ambassadors will be tasked with timely, accurate and reliable reporting to the relevant commission AOD [Authorising Officer by Delegation], according to intervals and format decided on by the commission.It adds that commission auditors are to be involved on a permanent and ongoing basis, in virtually all the aspects of the financial administration of the EEAS.The commission even has power over Ashton's media relations. The FPI handles the EEAS press and communications budget. The commission decides if she gets a spot on its internet TV - the European Broadcasting Service - and its spokespeople must be told in a timely manner if she wants to do a press release.Meanwhile, Ashton's ambassadors spend much of their time taking instructions from and funneling reports for Piebalgs, Fuele and Georgieva's departments, as well as doing the paperwork on the three commissioners' projects in their role as sub-delegated accounting officers.
In the driver's seat
Ashton spokesman Michael Mann said the inter-service pact does not diminish the EU diplomatic corps' authority.He said the EEAS is in the driver's seat in terms of spending strategies, while the commission does budget implementation.He added that the heads of delegation are in charge of the whole activity of their delegation and that in a national embassy it would also be logical for an ambassador to receive instruction from and to give feedback to a line ministry, while keeping the MFA [ministry of foreign affairs] in copy.An EU head of delegation - who asked to remain anonymous - described the inter-service arrangements as cumbersome and slow, however.
In one example, if the EEAS wants to release up to €20 million in emergency funds the decision must go through Ashton's secretary general, her private office, the FPI, relevant commission services and the Political and Security Committee (a group of EU countries' ambassadors).Michael Mann said the process takes one week. The head of delegation noted: It takes about a month and this is supposed to be our fastest instrument.The contact added that there is a split between the EEAS, which wants to use development aid to support political goals, and Piebalgs' people, who take a Biblical view of helping the poor.We were told: You have the mike, but we have the money. You can make statements and say whatever you like, but we control the money' ... I don't mind having so many bosses [taking instructions from various commissioners], but what's important to me is that they act as a team. I don't think they talk to each other.
