MITZPE RONEN — The heads of the centrist Blue and White party on Monday vowed that their government would never return the Golan Heights to Syria and would continue pushing for international recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the territory, which it captured in the 1967 Six Day War.“The Golan Heights is under Israeli sovereignty and it will remain under Israeli sovereignty,” said Yair Lapid, number two on the party’s list, speaking from Mitzpe Ronen, a hill on the Golan Heights overlooking the Syrian town of Quneitra.Party leader Benny Gantz said the party planned to double the population of the strategic plateau, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. Israel extended sovereignty to the territory in 1980, in a move never recognized internationally. Syria has demanded the territory be returned as part of any peace deal.“We will increase the settlement of the Golan in a way that shows the world clearly — we will not come down from the Golan; the opposite — it will be developed and [its population] doubled,” Gantz said.Approximately 50,000 people live on the Golan, more than half of them Druze, many of whom continue to be loyal to Syria.Israel has, in the past, floated the idea of returning the Golan Heights to Syria as part of a peace deal. This reportedly occurred most recently under then-prime minister Ehud Olmert.The Blue and White candidates indicated that they would not offer such a concession to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, owing to his egregious human rights violations.“On the other side of the border is a dictator responsible for the murder of half a million of his own people. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking hours after two Israeli soldiers were injured in a predawn car-ramming in the West Bank, said Monday that he would see to it that the suspected Palestinian attackers’ homes were demolished as soon as legally possible.The ramming occurred near the village of N’ima at approximately 3:30 a.m. The army said that “from an initial investigation it appears to have been an attack.” Soldiers opened fire on the three occupants of the vehicle, killing two and wounding the third.An IDF officer was seriously injured and a border guard was lightly wounded in the attack, the military said.“We will do everything to speed up the demolition of these murderers’ homes just like the murderer of Ori Ansbacher,” Netanyahu said, referring to a teenager who was raped and murdered last month just outside Jerusalem, allegedly by a West Bank Palestinian.“I gave an instruction to speed up the demolition of these homes within the parameters of the legal system,” he said. “We are determined to continue our struggle against murderers and against terror as such.”The home of Ansbacher’s confessed killer was mapped for demolition three days after she was killed on February 7. Iran’s supreme leader cautioned the country’s government on Monday not to pin its hopes on Europe as Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers founders under US pressure.Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s website quoted him as saying the landmark 2015 nuclear deal “could not fix our economic problems.”Khamenei’s comments came as the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said Iran is complying with the deal. Yukiya Amano made his assessment in a regular update to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board of governors, confirming a confidential report distributed to member states last month.He said that “Iran is implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” referencing the official name of the deal. Amano added that “it is essential that Iran continues to fully implement those commitments.”The US and the European Union disagree over several issues, including Iran.The nuclear deal was aimed at preventing Tehran from building atomic weapons. The US pulled out of the agreement in May 2018 and has been urging the remaining signatories — the UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China — to abandon it as well. IDF attack helicopters hit two positions of the Hamas terror group in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday in response to an explosive device that was carried into Israel by balloons launched from the Palestinian enclave, the army said.It was Israel’s fourth retaliatory airstrike against the terror group in the past three days.It came after a bunch of balloons carrying explosives came down between two buildings in the Eshkol Regional Council, the council said in a statement. The bomb exploded but caused neither injuries nor damage.On Sunday night an Israeli military drone bombed a Hamas position in the northern Gaza Strip in response to a violent riot along the border nearby, according to Palestinian media.Members of a so-called “confusion unit” held a violent demonstration along the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip, east of Beit Hanoun, burning tires and setting off many explosive devices near the border.“An Israel Defense Forces aircraft attacked a Hamas post in response to the throwing of explosive devices across the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said at the time.It appeared to be the military’s first time conducting such an attack in response to riots along the security fence itself, rather than to cross-border violence directed toward Israeli civilian communities.Hours later, the regional council said two more balloons flown from the Strip exploded in the air. (Reuters) - Rescuers in Alabama on Monday dug through the remnants of homes and businesses destroyed by a spate of tornadoes that killed at least 23 people, including children, the deadliest such storms to strike the United States in almost six years.The tornadoes ripped through Lee County on Sunday with winds of at least 150 miles per hour (240 kph), at the midpoint of the five-step Enhanced Fujita scale, which meteorologists use to measure tornado strength.At least two and as many as five tornadoes hit an area of eastern Alabama near the Georgia border in the space of a few hours on Sunday afternoon, with some of the worst damage in the tiny community of Beauregard, according to the National Weather Service.Mobile homes were tossed on their sides and ripped open, their contents strewn on the ground, live television images showed. MITZPE RONEN — The heads of the centrist Blue and White party on Monday vowed that their government would never return the Golan Heights to Syria and would continue pushing for international recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the territory, which it captured in the 1967 Six Day War.“The Golan Heights is under Israeli sovereignty and it will remain under Israeli sovereignty,” said Yair Lapid, number two on the party’s list, speaking from Mitzpe Ronen, a hill on the Golan Heights overlooking the Syrian town of Quneitra.Party leader Benny Gantz said the party planned to double the population of the strategic plateau, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. Israel extended sovereignty to the territory in 1980, in a move never recognized internationally. Syria has demanded the territory be returned as part of any peace deal.“We will increase the settlement of the Golan in a way that shows the world clearly — we will not come down from the Golan; the opposite — it will be developed and [its population] doubled,” Gantz said.Approximately 50,000 people live on the Golan, more than half of them Druze, many of whom continue to be loyal to Syria.Israel has, in the past, floated the idea of returning the Golan Heights to Syria as part of a peace deal. This reportedly occurred most recently under then-prime minister Ehud Olmert.The Blue and White candidates indicated that they would not offer such a concession to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, owing to his egregious human rights violations.“On the other side of the border is a dictator responsible for the murder of half a million of his own people. We operate every day, including yesterday, against Iran and its efforts to entrench itself in the region.”The Quneitra strike targeted Iranian-backed Shiite militiamen trying to set up a base of operations near the Israeli border. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking hours after two Israeli soldiers were injured in a predawn car-ramming in the West Bank, said Monday that he would see to it that the suspected Palestinian attackers’ homes were demolished as soon as legally possible.The ramming occurred near the village of N’ima at approximately 3:30 a.m. The army said that “from an initial investigation it appears to have been an attack.” Soldiers opened fire on the three occupants of the vehicle, killing two and wounding the third.An IDF officer was seriously injured and a border guard was lightly wounded in the attack, the military said.“We will do everything to speed up the demolition of these murderers’ homes just like the murderer of Ori Ansbacher,” Netanyahu said, referring to a teenager who was raped and murdered last month just outside Jerusalem, allegedly by a West Bank Palestinian.“I gave an instruction to speed up the demolition of these homes within the parameters of the legal system,” he said. “We are determined to continue our struggle against murderers and against terror as such.”The home of Ansbacher’s confessed killer was mapped for demolition three days after she was killed on February 7. BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's latest restrictions on arms exports risk making Berlin a pariah in Europe's defense industry, threatening future collaboration on weapons development and its own ambitions to foster a common European defense policy.Germany's decision to unilaterally halt all shipments of military equipment to Saudi Arabia in November after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has brought long-standing differences between Berlin and its European partners over arms controls to a tipping point.The move has put a question mark over billions of euros of military orders, including a 10 billion pound deal to sell 48 Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Riyadh, and has prompted some firms such as Airbus to strip German components from some of their products.With British defense contractor BAE Systems, the company behind the Eurofighter Typhoon, warning that the German embargo would weigh on its financial performance, London and Paris are racing to convince Berlin to lift it.The Social Democrats (SPD), junior partners in Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, want to keep the arms freeze against Saudi Arabia in place and reach agreement on a more restrictive export policy, keen to avoid further losses among German voters who are cautious on arms sales.Merkel's conservatives, keen to smooth the rift with France and Britain, are piling pressure on the SPD by accusing them of jeopardizing German industry and jobs.But the SPD notes that the coalition parties agreed last year to halt future arms sales to any countries involved in the Yemen conflict, which includes Saudi Arabia.Paralyzed by domestic political squabbling, Berlin on Friday put off a decision about extending the embargo beyond its current March 9 deadline till the end of the month, fuelling concerns among European allies and industry."We see no way to resolve the issue at this point," said one European industry official.
