Iran on Saturday condemned Britain’s decision to outlaw the political wing of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, describing it as “wrong and irresponsible.”Britain said Monday it would seek to make membership of the Shiite terror group or inviting support for it a crime.The decision followed outrage over the display of the Hezbollah flag, which features a Kalashnikov assault rifle, at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in London.“Iran considers Hezbollah a legitimate and legal force which plays an effective and undeniable role in helping its country’s political stability and safeguarding its security,” Iran’s foreign ministry said on its website.“[It] considers the decision to place Hezbollah on a terrorism blacklist to be wrong and irresponsible and one which will not contribute to the stability and security of Lebanon.”Hezbollah was established in 1982 during the Lebanese civil war and fought a 2006 war with Israel. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Prosecutors in Saudi Arabia have referred detained women’s rights activists to trial, saying those charged “enjoy all rights preserved by the laws in the kingdom” after they were reportedly tortured in custody.Prosecutors issued the statement late Friday, referring to their earlier June statement that marked the activists’ arrest just before Saudi Arabia granted women the right to drive.Prosecutors alleged those arrested had the “aim to undermine the kingdom’s security, stability and national unity.”Several people with knowledge of their arrest have told The Associated Press that some of the women detained have been subjected to caning, electrocution and sexual assault. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal and to protect personal details about the detainees.The Saudi government did not respond to questions about the women’s cases early Saturday.However, the London-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, owned by a Saudi media group long associated with the Al Saud royal family, published a story Saturday quoting a deputy prosecutor denying those detained had been tortured.The newspaper quoted deputy prosecutor Shalaan bin Rajih al-Shalaan as saying the detained face charges over cooperating with those “hostile to the kingdom” and for allegedly recruiting “persons in a sensitive government entity to obtain information and official documents.” He did not elaborate, nor did he offer evidence to support the charges.The women, who include activists in their 20s as well as mothers, grandmothers and retired professors, have been accused of vague national security violations in connection with their human rights work. AL-OMAR OIL FIELD BASE, Syria — A spokesman for the US-backed force fighting the Islamic State group in eastern Syria says fighters are waging intense battles with the group, advancing on two fronts in the last area they control.Mustafa Bali of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces tweeted Saturday that “heavy clashes” are taking place in the area on the east bank of the Euphrates River.Bali said three SDF fighters were wounded.The SDF on Friday evening resumed military operations to liberate the last piece of territory held by IS in the province of Deir el-Zour after evacuating thousands of civilians and hostages who had been besieged inside.Zana Amedi, an SDF commander, told The Associated Press that “an active ground force” is advancing into IS-held territories as the jihadists resort to sniper fire and booby-traps.“Those left inside are fighters who do not wish to surrender,” Bali told The Associated Press.The military campaign to uproot the militants from the eastern banks of the Euphrates River began in September, pushing them down toward this last corner in the village of Baghouz, near the Iraqi border. The military operation was halted on February 12 as the SDF said a large group of civilians and hostages were holed up in the territory, which sits atop caves and tunnels where they had been hiding.The remaining speck of IS-controlled land in Baghouz village is also along the Euphrates from one side and the desert near the Iraqi border from the other. Thousands of civilians were living in a tent encampment and houses along the riverside.Over the last two weeks, thousands of civilians have been evacuated, many of them women and children in desperate conditions. The only aid group at the evacuation site, the Free Burma Rangers, estimated that at least 10,000 civilians have left the IS pocket since February 20, in trips organized by the SDF.The evacuees, who included IS family members, said food was running low and clean water and medicine were scarce. Despite its demise, many defended what remained of the group’s territorial hold, which once spanned a third of Iraq and Syria.As they trickled out, SDF and coalition officials screened them. Women and children were transferred to camps miles away. Sudan’s intelligence chief on Saturday denied a report that he met the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency to plan his ascension to the country’s leadership.Khartoum’s intelligence service said the claim by the London-based Middle East Eye news site was “bare of truth” and “lacks professionalism and objectivity,” according to a report on Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.“Sudan does not need to move secretly or follow a path that runs against its national principles or policies,” the National Intelligence and Security Service said.MEE had reported Friday that Salah Gosh had met with Israel’s Yossi Cohen in Germany last month, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. Iran on Saturday condemned Britain’s decision to outlaw the political wing of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, describing it as “wrong and irresponsible.”Britain said Monday it would seek to make membership of the Shiite terror group or inviting support for it a crime.The decision followed outrage over the display of the Hezbollah flag, which features a Kalashnikov assault rifle, at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in London.“Iran considers Hezbollah a legitimate and legal force which plays an effective and undeniable role in helping its country’s political stability and safeguarding its security,” Iran’s foreign ministry said on its website.“[It] considers the decision to place Hezbollah on a terrorism blacklist to be wrong and irresponsible and one which will not contribute to the stability and security of Lebanon.”Hezbollah was established in 1982 during the Lebanese civil war and fought a 2006 war with Israel. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, regularly threatens to target Israel with thousands of advanced missiles that can reach all major Israeli cities.The group is considered a terror organization by Israel, the US and the Arab League. The European Union and Australia only designate the group’s military wing as such.Britain blacklisted Hezbollah’s military wing in 2008 but had until now made no move against its political wing.However, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Monday that any distinction between its military and political wings “does not exist.”The move came after the group was included as part of Lebanon’s new government. Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday invited Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Damascus after the latter resigned, seemingly over being left out of meetings with Assad.According to Iranian state media, cited by the Reuters news agency, no date has been set for the visit.Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday rejected Zarif’s resignation, the government’s official website said.“I believe your resignation is against the country’s interests and do not approve it,” Rouhani wrote in a letter to Zarif, the website said.“I consider you, as put by the leader, to be ‘trustworthy, brave and pious’ and in the forefront of resistance against America’s all-out pressure,” he added, referring to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.Zarif abruptly tendered his resignation on Instagram on Monday, reportedly because he was not invited to attend meetings with Assad.Assad, a major recipient of Iranian aid during his country’s nearly eight-year civil war, met with both Khamenei and Rouhani on his rare foreign visit, but not with Zarif.Rouhani praised Zarif’s “relentless efforts and endeavors” in bearing the “heavy responsibility” of the foreign affairs portfolio, and stressed that Zarif was the pointman in the conduct of Iran’s foreign policy.“As ordered several times, all bodies — including government or state bodies — must be in full coordination with this ministry with regards to foreign relations,” the president said in his letter.Iran’s Entekhab news agency said it tried to reach Zarif after Assad’s visit and received the following message: “After the photos of today’s meetings, Javad Zarif no longer has any credibility in the world as the foreign minister!”Zarif also got support from Maj. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Prosecutors in Saudi Arabia have referred detained women’s rights activists to trial, saying those charged “enjoy all rights preserved by the laws in the kingdom” after they were reportedly tortured in custody.Prosecutors issued the statement late Friday, referring to their earlier June statement that marked the activists’ arrest just before Saudi Arabia granted women the right to drive.Prosecutors alleged those arrested had the “aim to undermine the kingdom’s security, stability and national unity.”Several people with knowledge of their arrest have told The Associated Press that some of the women detained have been subjected to caning, electrocution and sexual assault. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal and to protect personal details about the detainees.The Saudi government did not respond to questions about the women’s cases early Saturday.However, the London-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, owned by a Saudi media group long associated with the Al Saud royal family, published a story Saturday quoting a deputy prosecutor denying those detained had been tortured.The newspaper quoted deputy prosecutor Shalaan bin Rajih al-Shalaan as saying the detained face charges over cooperating with those “hostile to the kingdom” and for allegedly recruiting “persons in a sensitive government entity to obtain information and official documents.” He did not elaborate, nor did he offer evidence to support the charges.The women, who include activists in their 20s as well as mothers, grandmothers and retired professors, have been accused of vague national security violations in connection with their human rights work. AL-OMAR OIL FIELD BASE, Syria — A spokesman for the US-backed force fighting the Islamic State group in eastern Syria says fighters are waging intense battles with the group, advancing on two fronts in the last area they control.Mustafa Bali of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces tweeted Saturday that “heavy clashes” are taking place in the area on the east bank of the Euphrates River.Bali said three SDF fighters were wounded.The SDF on Friday evening resumed military operations to liberate the last piece of territory held by IS in the province of Deir el-Zour after evacuating thousands of civilians and hostages who had been besieged inside.Zana Amedi, an SDF commander, told The Associated Press that “an active ground force” is advancing into IS-held territories as the jihadists resort to sniper fire and booby-traps.“Those left inside are fighters who do not wish to surrender,” Bali told The Associated Press.The military campaign to uproot the militants from the eastern banks of the Euphrates River began in September, pushing them down toward this last corner in the village of Baghouz, near the Iraqi border. The military operation was halted on February 12 as the SDF said a large group of civilians and hostages were holed up in the territory, which sits atop caves and tunnels where they had been hiding.The remaining speck of IS-controlled land in Baghouz village is also along the Euphrates from one side and the desert near the Iraqi border from the other. Thousands of civilians were living in a tent encampment and houses along the riverside.Over the last two weeks, thousands of civilians have been evacuated, many of them women and children in desperate conditions. The only aid group at the evacuation site, the Free Burma Rangers, estimated that at least 10,000 civilians have left the IS pocket since February 20, in trips organized by the SDF.The evacuees, who included IS family members, said food was running low and clean water and medicine were scarce. Despite its demise, many defended what remained of the group’s territorial hold, which once spanned a third of Iraq and Syria.As they trickled out, SDF and coalition officials screened them. Women and children were transferred to camps miles away. Men suspected of links to the militant group were taken into custody at other facilities.US President Donald Trump said Thursday that IS has lost “100 percent” of the territory it once controlled in Syria, but officials estimate there are hundreds of militants left in the small patch of territory in Baghouz, and that they will likely fight till the end.Bali would not speculate on how long the military operation might take but said he expects a “fierce battle.”He said the battles are expected to take place in a very small area that includes a complex network of tunnels, as well as suicide bombers and land mines.“The battle to finish off what is left of Daesh has started,” said SDF commander Adnan Afrin, using the Arabic acronym for IS.Afrin said he expects “resistance” from the remaining fighters who are likely to deploy all their weapons, including suicide bombers.He said most of the remaining fighters are Europeans, Asians, Iraqis and Arabs from the area.On Friday, the smallest batch of evacuees, just over 200, came out of the pocket in around six trucks used to transport sheep. Sudan’s intelligence chief on Saturday denied a report that he met the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency to plan his ascension to the country’s leadership.Khartoum’s intelligence service said the claim by the London-based Middle East Eye news site was “bare of truth” and “lacks professionalism and objectivity,” according to a report on Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.“Sudan does not need to move secretly or follow a path that runs against its national principles or policies,” the National Intelligence and Security Service said.MEE had reported Friday that Salah Gosh had met with Israel’s Yossi Cohen in Germany last month, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. It cited a senior Sudanese military source.The unconfirmed report said the meeting was arranged by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and that under discussion was Gosh’s potential installment as Sudan’s leader once beleaguered president Omar al-Bashir is toppled from his post.None of the other nations mentioned in the report have commented on its veracity so far.The Sudanese source told MEE Arab leaders viewed Gosh as any ally. They hoped Israel could bring Washington on board with the plan, he said.“There is a consensus that Bashir will go within the ruling party and the army. The battle is about who is coming after,” the source said.“Gosh has strong links with the Saudis, the Emiratis and the Egyptians.
