What I have seen is terrible,” said Charles Njenga, who ran from a scene of blood, broken glass, burning vehicles and pillars of black smoke.Al-Shabab — the Somalia-based group that carried out the 2013 attack at the nearby Westgate Mall in Nairobi that left 67 people dead — claimed responsibility for the carnage at the DusitD2 hotel complex, which includes bars, restaurants, offices and banks and is in a well-to-do neighborhood with many American, European and Indian expatriates.A Kenyan police officer said 15 bodies had been taken to the morgue. A man wearing military-style clothing was spotted in a Lebanese village on Tuesday afternoon, apparently after crossing the security fence from Israel, Lebanese media reported.The Israeli military confirmed that soldiers had spotted a tear in the border fence and tracks indicating that someone had traveled from Israel into Lebanon.Lebanese media had conflicting reports.According to the Lebanese al-Jadeed television station, the suspect was seen entering the village of Aita al-Shaab, near the border with Israel, wearing military attire and holding a box.When residents approached him, he threw down the box and other papers, which had Hebrew writing on them, and ran away, the report said.According to al-Jadeed, the Lebanese Armed Forces were searching for the man in a nearby area.Another Lebanese outlet, Al Mayadeen, reported that a wallet was found with an American passport in it.And LBC reported that residents found a book in Hebrew and English and medical equipment.The Israel Defense Forces said it was investigating the issue.The border with Lebanon has been especially tense in recent weeks, while the military endeavored to find and destroy attack tunnels it says the Hezbollah terror group had dug into Israel.On Sunday, the IDF declared that it had found all the tunnels leading into Israel from Lebanon.

BRUSSELS (AFP) — The Frenchman on trial accused of murdering four people at the Jewish museum of Belgium denied Tuesday he was the gunman and alleged the court had robbed him of defense witnesses.Asked by the judge whether he accepted the evidence linking him to the Brussels attack, Mehdi Nemmouche said: “No.”But he admitted he had been arrested six days later in possession of firearms — a revolver and a Kalashnikov — of the type used in the May 14, 2014, shooting spree.Nevertheless, he complained that the judge had rejected testimony from witnesses who “could have given a reading of the case at the polar opposite of the federal prosecutors.”And he told jurors he would not speak further to address the charges, leaving his defense to his legal team.In laying out their strategy, his lawyers said Nemmouche was innocent and one suggested he was a victim of a murky Israeli plot — a tactic that Jewish groups had warned against.“Mehdi Nemmouche is not the killer,” lawyer Henri Laquay told the Brussels criminal court. “He did not squeeze the trigger.”Laquay urged the 12-person jury to acquit Nemmouche.Both Nemmouche and Nacer Bendrer, a fellow Frenchman aged 30 who allegedly supplied the weapons, face life in prison if convicted of charges of terrorist murder.Investigators said Nemmouche was the gunman and attacked the museum shortly after returning from Syria, where he had fought on behalf of jihadist groups.-Defense points finger at Mossad-Defense lawyer Virginie Taelman alleged that an image taken from surveillance footage had been manipulated and that this, plus the attitude of prosecutors, could suggest the murders were “not an attack by the Islamic State but a targeted execution by Mossad agents,” referring to Israel’s intelligence service.Jewish community leaders attending the trial earlier voiced fear the defense will deflect attention from the anti-Semitic nature of the attacks.Firing a pistol and then an assault rifle, investigators say, the gunman killed two Israeli tourists, a French volunteer and a Belgian receptionist at the Jewish Museum.Six days after the attack, Nemmouche — born to a family of Algerian origin in the northern French town of Roubaix — was arrested in the southern French port city of Marseille, where he arrived on a bus from Brussels.Investigators say he was carrying a handgun and an assault rifle of the types used in the shooting — something Nemmouche confirmed in court.But Laquay said Nemmouche’s DNA was not found on the handle of the entrance door to the museum, even though security camera footage shows the killer “strongly and violently” grabbing it.He said investigators took 12 DNA samples from the door handle just three days after the shooting, but none has been linked to Nemmouche.“It’s not him who put his hand on the door during the killing,” Laquay said.-‘Not hold water’-Nor did Nemmouche show any resistance during his arrest in Marseille, he added.A prosecutor told the court last week that investigators lifted Nemmouche’s fingerprints from the barrel of the pistol he used in the museum attack.The prosecutor added they also found his DNA on a Kalashnikov rifle, the second weapon used.Both were found in Nemmouche’s possession when he was arrested in Marseille, investigators say.The prosecutor added that investigators found gunpowder residue on a blue jacket among his belongings, the prosecutor said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday warned Israel would press ahead with its campaign against Iranian entrenchment in Syria, days after a rare acknowledgement of a bombing raid in Damascus.Speaking at a ceremony at army headquarters in Tel Aviv to install new IDF chief of staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Netanyahu mocked claims from Tehran that it did not have a military presence in Syria but only advisers.“So I advise them to get out of there quickly because we will continue our offensive policy as we promised and as we do without fear and without pause,” the premier said.He added that the country was ready to fight and win a “multi-front war,” in apparent reference to concerns over twin tensions on the southern and northern borders.Netanyahu also accused Iran of using its nascent space program as cover for ballistic missile development, as suspected by many in the West. Hours before Netanyahu’s remarks Iran said it had launched a satellite that had failed to reach orbit.He alleged the “innocent satellite” was actually “the first stage of an intercontinental missile” Iran is developing in violation of international agreements.On Sunday, Netanyahu openly admitted that Israel bombed Iranian targets in Damascus over the weekend. Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot called for the army to remain a bastion of civility despite a rancorous political climate as he bade farewell after four years at the helm of the military.The comments came at a Defense Ministry headquarters ceremony ahead of former deputy Aviv Kochavi taking the reins of the Israel Defense Forces.“I am leaving behind a competent military, ready and strong, which will only strengthen its power, wisdom and determination,” said Eisenkot, who is retiring after 40 years of service.“As an army of the people, the IDF above all must preserve its place in the center of civil public discourse,” he said.Eisenkot has pleaded in the past for the army not to be dragged into politics and vice versa, particularly amid the prosecution of a soldier who killed a wounded and disarmed Palestinian attacker in the West Bank. That case led to criticism of the army from some politicians on the right and death threats against Eisenkot.His comments on Tuesday came as an election campaign ramped up, with the army often serving as a political battleground.Eisenkot praised Kochavi’s leadership, saying his “determination and vast experience would strengthen the IDF’s readiness, preserve its values and continue to cultivate a sense of pride among the people.”The 54-year-old Kochavi was promoted from major-general at the ceremony, becoming Israel’s 22nd military chief.
