UK’s May faces no-confidence vote Wednesday after Brexit plan crushed-British press says May ‘humiliated and crushed’ by defeat; however, PM likely to survive the vote unless lawmakers from her Conservative party rebel-By Agencies-TOI-JAN 16,19

LONDON — British lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s divorce deal with the European Union on Tuesday, plunging the Brexit process into chaos and triggering a no-confidence vote that could topple her government. The defeat was widely expected, but the scale of the House of Commons’ vote — 432 votes against the government and 202 in support — was devastating for May’s fragile leadership. It followed more than two years of political upheaval in which May has staked her political reputation on getting a Brexit deal and was the biggest defeat for a government in the House of Commons in modern history, unprecedented in more than a century.Moments after the result was announced — with Speaker John Bercow bellowing “the noes have it” to a packed Commons chamber — May said it was only right to test whether the government still had lawmakers’ support to carry on.Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn quickly obliged, saying May’s government had lost the confidence of Parliament.Lawmakers will vote Wednesday on his motion of no-confidence. If the government loses, it will have 14 days to overturn the result or face a national election.-Humiliated and crushed-British media were scathing. The words “humiliated” and “crushed” featured prominently in British newspaper headlines following parliament’s massive rejection of a divorce deal with the EU on Tuesday.Dailies said May’s grip on power was waning after the huge vote against the agreement struck between May’s government and Brussels, as she prepared to fight a no-confidence motion on Wednesday.“May humiliated by 230 votes,” The Daily Mirror tabloid said. The Daily Telegraph wrote: “Humiliation for prime minister as MPs overwhelmingly reject deal and Labour tables no confidence vote.”The broadsheet’s parliamentary sketchwriter Michael Deacon said May had somehow defied the odds by making a historic event an anticlimax.“Her speech had all the brio of a mouldy gym sock,” he wrote.“She sounded as winningly persuasive as a mother snapping at her children to eat up their cabbage or go to bed hungry.”The vote itself “was as if Agatha Christie has allowed Miss Marple to solve the murder half way through and spend the rest of the novel pottering about in the garden.”-Likely to survive-Although May lacks an overall majority in Parliament, she looks likely to survive the vote unless lawmakers from her Conservative party rebel. Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, which props up May’s government, said it would support her.“The House has spoken and the government will listen,” May said after the vote, which leaves her Brexit plan on life support just 10 weeks before the country is due to leave the EU on March 29.May promised to consult lawmakers on future moves, but gave little indication of what she plans to do next. Parliament has given the government until Monday to come up with a new proposal. She faces a stark choice: Steer the country toward an abrupt “no-deal” break with the EU or try to nudge it toward a softer departure. Meanwhile, lawmakers from both government and opposition parties are trying to wrest control of the Brexit process from a paralyzed government, so that lawmakers by majority vote can specify a new plan for Britain’s EU exit. But with no clear majority in Parliament for any single alternate course, there is a growing chance that Britain may seek to postpone its departure date while politicians work on a new plan — or even hand the decision back to voters in a new referendum on EU membership.-A second referendum? “If you can’t resolve the impasse here in Westminster, than you have to refer it back to the people,” said Labour Party lawmaker Chuka Umunna, who supports a second referendum.May, who had postponed a vote on the deal in December to avoid certain defeat, had implored lawmakers to back her deal and deliver on voters’ decision in 2016 to leave the EU.But the deal was doomed by deep opposition from both sides of the divide over UK’s place in the bloc. Pro-Brexit lawmakers say the deal will leave Britain bound indefinitely to EU rules, while pro-EU politicians favor an even closer economic relationship with Europe. The most contentious section of the deal was an insurance policy known as the “backstop” designed to prevent the reintroduction of border controls between the UK’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland Assurances from EU leaders that the backstop is intended as a temporary measure of last resort completely failed to win over many British skeptics,Two and a half years after the referendum, Britain remains divided over how, and whether, to leave the EU.As lawmakers debated in the chamber, there was a cacophony of chants, drums and music from rival bands of pro-EU and pro-Brexit protesters outside. One group waved blue-and-yellow EU flags, the other brandished “Leave Means Leave” placards.Inside, the government and opposition parties ordered lawmakers to cancel all other plans to be on hand for the crucial vote. Labour legislator Tulip Siddiq delayed the scheduled cesarean birth of her son so she could attend, arriving in a wheelchairSome Conservatives want May to seek further talks with EU leaders on changes before bringing a tweaked version of the bill back to Parliament, even though EU officials insist the 585-page withdrawal agreement cannot be renegotiated.Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, said May was unlikely to get changes to her deal from that could “placate her Brexiteers.”“Or, she reaches out to Labour and goes for a softer Brexit than most Brexiteers would contemplate” — but which the EU might accept, Bale said.-Frustrated EU-Frustrated EU leaders called on May to make her intentions clear on the future of Brexit.“Now, it is time for the UK.to tell us the next steps,” said Michel Barnier, the bloc’s chief negotiator.European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker — who returned to Brussels late Tuesday to deal with fallout from the vote — said the rejection of May’s deal had increased “the risk of a disorderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom.”“Time is almost up,” he said.Economists warn that an abrupt break from the EU could batter the British economy and bring chaotic scenes at borders, ports and airports. Business groups expressed alarm at the prospect of a “no-deal” exit.“Every business will feel no-deal is hurtling closer,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the Confederation of British Industry. “A new plan is needed immediately.”European Council President Donald Tusk highlighted the quagmire the U.K. had sunk into, and hinted that the best solution might be for Britain not to leave.“If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?” he tweeted.

Palestinians assume chairmanship of largest bloc of nations at the UN-Taking charge of Group of 77, which encompasses 134 developing countries, Abbas slams Israel’s ‘occupation of the state of Palestine,’ condemns ‘terrorism in all its forms’-By Adam Rasgon    -TOI-16 January 2019

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas assumed the chairmanship of the largest bloc of countries at the United Nations on behalf of “the State of Palestine” on Tuesday in New York City. The Palestinians are slated to serve as the leader of the bloc, known as the Group of 77, for the next year.In a speech at the UN headquarters, Abbas called the task of leading the Group of 77 “a great responsibility.”“I am pleased to take over today the chairmanship of the Group of 77 on behalf of the Palestinian people and the State of Palestine,” he said, addressing the bloc. “It is a great responsibility that the State of Palestine will bear with complete humility, sincerity and dedication.”The Group of 77 is a consortium of 134 developing countries that often works together in the UN General Assembly. The body was originally founded in 1964 with 77 countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Thailand and India. Over the years, it has grown to include countries such as South Africa, Qatar, Cuba, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Singapore, and Angola, and currently represents some 80 percent of the world’s population. In October 2018, the General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority to temporarily grant Palestine additional rights and privileges, allowing it to head the Group of 77.While it serves as the leader of the body, Palestine will be able to cosponsor proposals and amendments, make statements, and raise procedural motions. In October, both Israel and the United States expressed strong opposition to granting the Palestinians extra rights at the UN.Abbas told the Group of 77 on Tuesday that Israel was hindering development in the Middle East, and called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.“Israel’s continued colonization and occupation of the State of Palestine undermines our development and capacity for cooperation, coordination and obstructs the cohesive future development of all peoples of the region,” he told the gathering.Abbas also stated that the Palestinians “are committed to international law and legitimacy and the peaceful resolution of the [Israeli-Palestinian] conflict.”In late December, the PA president said the Ramallah-based Palestinian leadership is prepared to reenter a peace process with Israel based on international law and United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. In his remarks on Tuesday, he also condemned terrorism “in all its forms, colors, and types” regardless of who perpetrates it.“Terrorism is terrorism. We must all condemn it,” Abbas said.A number of other Palestinian officials feted Palestine assuming the chairmanship of the Group of 77.“Today President Mahmoud Abbas was handed the annual presidency of the G77. A historic step for Palestine that was made by the sacrifices of our people and their long struggle for freedom,” Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, said in a statement.“Such recognition signifies the recognition of the international community of Palestinian statehood and our right to self-determination,” he said. “Despite the reality under Israel’s military occupation, Palestine can play a significant role within the global system.”AFP contributed to this report.

Al-Shabab terrorists claim deadly attack on Nairobi hotel as toll rises to 15-Kenyan authorities say that the scene at the luxury hotel is under control, but sporadic gunfire can still be heard-By JOSEPH MWIHIA-TOI-JAN 16,19

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gunmen stormed a luxury hotel in Kenya’s capital on Tuesday, setting off thunderous explosions and gunning down people at cafe tables in an attack claimed by Africa’s deadliest Islamic terror group. A police officer said at least 15 people had died.“It is terrible. What I have seen is terrible,” said Charles Njenga, who ran from a scene of blood, broken glass, burning vehicles and pillars of black smoke.Al-Shabab — the Somalia-based group that carried out the 2013 attack at the nearby Westgate Mall in Nairobi that left 67 people dead — claimed responsibility for the carnage at the DusitD2 hotel complex, which includes bars, restaurants, offices and banks and is in a well-to-do neighborhood with many American, European and Indian expatriates.A Kenyan police officer said 15 bodies had been taken to the morgue. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. Al-Shabab asserted that 47 people were killed but its Shahada news agency post gave no details.Authorities sent special forces into the hotel to flush out the gunmen. Late Tuesday night, about eight hours after the siege began, Interior Minister Fred Matiang’i said all of the buildings affected had been secured and that security forces were mopping up.“I would like to reiterate that the situation is under control and the country is safe,” he said. However, more gunfire was heard about an hour later, Kenyan broadcaster NTV reported. Some family members said they had been in touch with loved ones still hiding inside the complex, waiting to be rescued.Authorities did not say how many attackers there were — or what happened to them — though Kenya’s Citizen TV aired security-camera footage that showed at least four heavily armed men in dark-colored, paramilitary-style gear.A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media said bodies were seen in restaurants downstairs and in offices upstairs, but “there was no time to count the dead.”A witness who gave his name only as Ken said he saw five bodies at the hotel entrance. Other people were shouting for help and “when we rushed back to try to rescue them, gunshots started coming from upstairs, and we had to duck because they were targeting us and we could see two guys shooting,” he said. The coordinated assault began with an explosion that targeted three vehicles outside a bank, and a suicide bombing in the hotel lobby that severely wounded a number of guests, said Kenya’s national police chief, Joseph Boinnet.Survivors reported hearing a shattering blast and saw people mowed down by gunmen as they sat in a cafe. Victims were left slumped on tables.“We were changing our shifts, and that is when I heard a loud blast and people were screaming,” said Enoch Kibet, who works as a cleaner at the cafe and managed to crawl out a basement gate. “I couldn’t believe I was alive. The blast was so loud and shook the whole complex.”Kenyan hospitals appealed for blood donations even as the number of wounded remained unclear.Associated Press video from inside the hotel showed Kenyan security officers searching the building and scared workers emerging from hiding while gunfire could still be heard. Some climbed out a window by ladder. One man got up from the floor where he appeared to be trying to hide under a piece of wood paneling, then showed his ID.As officers searched luxury fashion displays, wounded people were carried away on stretchers.Like the attack at the Westgate Mall, this one appeared aimed at wealthy Kenyans and foreigners. It came a day after a magistrate ruled that three men must stand trial in connection with the Westgate Mall siege.Al-Shabab has vowed retribution against Kenya for sending troops to Somalia to fight it since 2011. Tuesday’s violence came three years to the day after al-Shabab terrorists attacked a Kenyan military base in Somalia, killing scores of people. The al-Qaida-linked group has killed hundreds of people in Kenya. In the deadliest attack, al-Shabab claimed responsibility for an assault on Kenya’s Garissa University in 2015 that killed 147 people, mostly students. The latest carnage demonstrated al-Shabab’s continued ability to carry out spectacular acts of bloodshed despite a dramatic increase in US airstrikes against it under President Donald Trump.Tourism — an important source of revenue in Kenya, East Africa’s largest economy — has suffered because of the violence.Gunfire could be heard for hours after Tuesday’s attack began. Some people ducked behind cars, screaming, while others took cover behind fountains and other features at the lush complex. A bomb disposal unit was called in, and police blew up a car they said had explosives inside. A grenade was seen in a hallway.Dozens of people were rushed to safety as plainclothes officers went from shop to shop in the complex. Some people held up their hands to show they were unarmed.A Kenyan intelligence official said the country had been on high alert since November, with information about potential attacks on high-profile targets in Nairobi. The official was not authorized to talk to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity.Despite the repeated attacks, the Kenya-Somalia border remains porous, with al-Shabab extremists able to easily bribe their way across, according to a UN panel of experts. The hotel complex in Nairobi’s Westlands neighborhood is about a mile (2 kilometers) from Westgate Mall on a relatively quiet, tree-lined road in what is considered one of the most secure parts of the city. The hotel’s website says it is “cocooned away from the hustle and bustle in a secure and peaceful haven.”On Monday, the hotel promoted its spa by tweeting: “Is your new year off to a rough start?”

Florida governor goes after Airbnb over West Bank decision-Ron DeSantis calls for sanctions against the company to ‘make them feel the heat,’ saying their policy of delisting homes in settlements deliberately targets Jews-By TERRY SPENCER and Gary Fineout-TOI-JAN 16,19

BOCA RATON, Florida (AP) — Saying he would “make them feel the heat,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday called for sanctions against Airbnb unless it reverses its decision barring lodging listings in Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The Republican governor, who repeatedly touted his views on Israel while on the campaign trail last year, criticized the online lodging marketplace for a policy he said unfairly targets Jewish people.“We have a moral obligation to oppose the Airbnb policy; it does target Jews specifically,” said DeSantis.Airbnb announced in November that it would delist 200 properties and cease its operations in Israeli settlements “that are at the core of the dispute between the Israelis and Palestinians.”Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war. Today, more than 400,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank, in addition to 200,000 Israelis in East Jerusalem. Most of the international community considers the settlements illegal and an impediment to the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Israel sees the territory as disputed and says the fate of the settlements must be resolved in peace negotiations with the Palestinians.DeSantis announced two possible actions against Airbnb: He said the state would suspend the use of Airbnb for state-paid travel, and would consider barring the state’s pension fund from investing in Airbnb, even though the company is not currently publicly traded. The actions announced by DeSantis against Airbnb were just part of the governor’s show of support for the state’s sizable Jewish population, which in the past has been more supportive of Democratic candidates. DeSantis also announced that his first overseas trip would be to Israel in May, and he pledged at least $2 million in state money to Jewish schools for security upgrades. It’s not clear how much of an impact either policy would have on Airbnb, but DeSantis said being on Florida’s “hit list” would hurt the company if it decided to go public.“If we can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat,” he said, adding that Florida would change its stance if Airbnb reversed its policy. In response to the DeSantis’ announcement, company spokesman Ben Breit underscored all the other business Airbnb does in Israel, including hosting thousands of Floridians who visit.“We remain deeply committed to our more than 20,000 hosts in Israel,” Breit said in an email, adding that the company does not support an ongoing international campaign to boycott Israel. The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it supports Airbnb’s current policy and criticized Florida’s new governor, as well as the state’s policy to divest from any companies that boycott Israel.“Governor DeSantis should abstain from pushing his free-speech crackdown and instead should focus on protecting all Americans and American corporations from being punished by state legislation seeking to implement unconstitutional state-sponsored boycotts,” said Wilfredo Ruiz, a spokesman for the group.

Man crosses border from Israel into Lebanon – reports-IDF confirms tear found in border fence, with tracks apparently crossing border; one Lebanese outlet says man had Hebrew documents, while another says an American passport found-By Judah Ari Gross and Adam Rasgon-TOI-16 January 2019

A man wearing military-style clothing was spotted in a Lebanese village on Tuesday afternoon, apparently after crossing the security fence from Israel, Lebanese media reported. The Israeli military confirmed that soldiers had spotted a tear in the border fence and tracks indicating that someone had traveled from Israel into Lebanon.Lebanese media had conflicting reports.According to the Lebanese al-Jadeed television station, the suspect was seen entering the village of Aita al-Shaab, near the border with Israel, wearing military attire and holding a box. When residents approached him, he threw down the box and other papers, which had Hebrew writing on them, and ran away, the report said.According to al-Jadeed, the Lebanese Armed Forces were searching for the man in a nearby area.Another Lebanese outlet, Al Mayadeen, reported that a wallet was found with an American passport in it.And LBC reported that residents found a book in Hebrew and English and medical equipment. The Israel Defense Forces said it was investigating the issue. The border with Lebanon has been especially tense in recent weeks, while the military endeavored to find and destroy attack tunnels it says the Hezbollah terror group had dug into Israel. On Sunday, the IDF declared that it had found all the tunnels leading into Israel from Lebanon.

WARSAW, Poland — Poland was on Tuesday mulling over the prevalence of hate speech in politics a day after Gdansk mayor Pawel Adamowicz died from stab wounds inflicted by an attacker with a political grudge.Central to the debate is the longstanding hostility between the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party — in power since 2015 — and the centrist opposition Civic Platform (PO).“Madmen feed on our hate,” read a headline in Tuesday’s independent daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna while the liberal Gazeta Wyborcza warned: “Sooner or later, the seeds of hatred bear fruit.”And the centrist Rzeczpospolita daily lamented “the end of the age of innocence.”Footage of the attack posted on YouTube showed the 27-year-old suspect bursting onto the stage and launching himself at the centrist mayor of the Baltic port city at a charity fundraiser on Sunday. After stabbing the 53-year-old mayor several times, the man seized the microphone and claimed he had been wrongly jailed by the previous PO government and tortured.“That’s why Adamowicz dies,” he said.Several Jewish organizations released a statement Tuesday saying, “Hatred is becoming more and more visible and more widely accepted in Polish political and social life.”Speaking to AFP, political analyst Stanislaw Mocek said that although there was no empirical evidence that such a tense political climate leads to extreme behavior, “if someone is predisposed to violence, then he can be susceptible.”Back in 2017, the All-Polish Youth, a far-right Catholic group, published “political death certificates” for a string of political figures who had agreed to cooperate on migration — and Adamowicz was one of them.On Tuesday, the mayors of Warsaw and the western city of Wroclaw said they would ask schools to speak to students about the possible violent consequences of hate speech.“Adamowicz’s tragic death must mark a turning point” in both political and public discourse, Rzeczpospolita’s editor-in-chief Boguslaw Chrabota said. The American Jewish Committee called Adamowicz “a longtime friend of the Jewish community. He had opposed extreme-right marches organized by the National Radical Camp, or ONR, in Gdansk. After one such march, in April, he personally organized an anti-fascist march.“He was a true friend & ally in countering xenophobia. We must confront hatred in the public sphere,” AJC Central Europe tweeted.Adamowicz also criticized last year’s Polish law on Holocaust speech, calling it “idiotic and evil.” The law outlawed rhetoric in which Poland is blamed for Nazi crimes.

Lawyer for Brussels Jewish museum shooter suggests attack staged by Mossad-Mehdi Nemmouche denies killing four people in 2014 shooting; lawyer for Jewish museum says suspect’s defense ‘doesn’t hold water’-By Matthieu Demeestere and Clément ZAMPA-TOI-16 January 2019

BRUSSELS (AFP) — The Frenchman on trial accused of murdering four people at the Jewish museum of Belgium denied Tuesday he was the gunman and alleged the court had robbed him of defense witnesses.Asked by the judge whether he accepted the evidence linking him to the Brussels attack, Mehdi Nemmouche said: “No.”But he admitted he had been arrested six days later in possession of firearms — a revolver and a Kalashnikov — of the type used in the May 14, 2014, shooting spree.Nevertheless, he complained that the judge had rejected testimony from witnesses who “could have given a reading of the case at the polar opposite of the federal prosecutors.”And he told jurors he would not speak further to address the charges, leaving his defense to his legal team.In laying out their strategy, his lawyers said Nemmouche was innocent and one suggested he was a victim of a murky Israeli plot — a tactic that Jewish groups had warned against.“Mehdi Nemmouche is not the killer,” lawyer Henri Laquay told the Brussels criminal court. “He did not squeeze the trigger.”Laquay urged the 12-person jury to acquit Nemmouche. Both Nemmouche and Nacer Bendrer, a fellow Frenchman aged 30 who allegedly supplied the weapons, face life in prison if convicted of charges of terrorist murder.Investigators said Nemmouche was the gunman and attacked the museum shortly after returning from Syria, where he had fought on behalf of jihadist groups.-Defense points finger at Mossad-Defense lawyer Virginie Taelman alleged that an image taken from surveillance footage had been manipulated and that this, plus the attitude of prosecutors, could suggest the murders were “not an attack by the Islamic State but a targeted execution by Mossad agents,” referring to Israel’s intelligence service.Jewish community leaders attending the trial earlier voiced fear the defense will deflect attention from the anti-Semitic nature of the attacks.Firing a pistol and then an assault rifle, investigators say, the gunman killed two Israeli tourists, a French volunteer and a Belgian receptionist at the Jewish Museum.Six days after the attack, Nemmouche — born to a family of Algerian origin in the northern French town of Roubaix — was arrested in the southern French port city of Marseille, where he arrived on a bus from Brussels.Investigators say he was carrying a handgun and an assault rifle of the types used in the shooting — something Nemmouche confirmed in court. But Laquay said Nemmouche’s DNA was not found on the handle of the entrance door to the museum, even though security camera footage shows the killer “strongly and violently” grabbing it.He said investigators took 12 DNA samples from the door handle just three days after the shooting, but none has been linked to Nemmouche.“It’s not him who put his hand on the door during the killing,” Laquay said.-‘Not hold water’-Nor did Nemmouche show any resistance during his arrest in Marseille, he added.A prosecutor told the court last week that investigators lifted Nemmouche’s fingerprints from the barrel of the pistol he used in the museum attack. The prosecutor added they also found his DNA on a Kalashnikov rifle, the second weapon used. Both were found in Nemmouche’s possession when he was arrested in Marseille, investigators say.The prosecutor added that investigators found gunpowder residue on a blue jacket among his belongings, the prosecutor said. The museum shooter was seen wearing a similar jacket.Adrien Masset, a lawyer representing the Jewish Museum, said the defense team’s plans to argue the attack was an Israeli plot “absolutely did not hold water.”Belgian Jewish leader Yohan Benizri told AFP earlier this month he feared that Nemmouche’s lawyers would try to “play down” the attack’s anti-Semitic nature. The defense team, Benizri added, may even try to “twist” the facts by repeating “totally far-fetched” claims that Mossad staged the attack.“We don’t want Mehdi Nemmouche to become a star. He is a terrorist,” said Benizri, who heads the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organisations.

Threatening more attacks, Netanyahu tells Iran to ‘get out’ of Syria-Prime minister accuses Tehran of lying about advisers and lying about satellite launch, which he says is part of ICBM program-By TOI staff-16 January 2019

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday warned Israel would press ahead with its campaign against Iranian entrenchment in Syria, days after a rare acknowledgement of a bombing raid in Damascus.Speaking at a ceremony at army headquarters in Tel Aviv to install new IDF chief of staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Netanyahu mocked claims from Tehran that it did not have a military presence in Syria but only advisers.“So I advise them to get out of there quickly because we will continue our offensive policy as we promised and as we do without fear and without pause,” the premier said.He added that the country was ready to fight and win a “multi-front war,” in apparent reference to concerns over twin tensions on the southern and northern borders.Netanyahu also accused Iran of using its nascent space program as cover for ballistic missile development, as suspected by many in the West. Hours before Netanyahu’s remarks Iran said it had launched a satellite that had failed to reach orbit. He alleged the “innocent satellite” was actually “the first stage of an intercontinental missile” Iran is developing in violation of international agreements. On Sunday, Netanyahu openly admitted that Israel bombed Iranian targets in Damascus over the weekend. The strike destroyed a number of weapons caches in the Damascus airport, Netanyahu said.Israel typically refrains from commenting on individual airstrikes in Syria, but does generally acknowledge that it carries out raids against Iranian- and Hezbollah-linked targets in the country.Over the weekend, outgoing chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot said for the first time that Israel had dropped thousands of bombs on Iranian targets in Syria, breaking the silence on the breadth of the campaign. Some analysts see the shift in policy as a sign of growing Israeli boldness, with Iran and Syria generally refraining from responding to the airstrikes. Israel is also concerned over perceptions that it may curb its campaign under pressure from Russia as the US pulls troops out of Syria.Responding to Netanyahu’s statement on the Damascus airport bombing, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said Monday Iran did not have any military bases or military presence in Syria, and was only in the country “at the request of the Syrian government for advisory mission and fighting the terrorists,” according to a report by Iran’s official news agency, IRNA.Israel has accused Iran of seeking to establish a military presence in Syria that could threaten Israeli security and attempting to transfer advanced weaponry to the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.

In parting remarks, outgoing army chief warns against politicizing IDF-As Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi takes charge, Gadi Eisenkot says the military ‘must preserve its place in the center of civil public discourse’-By TOI staff-16 January 2019

Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot called for the army to remain a bastion of civility despite a rancorous political climate as he bade farewell after four years at the helm of the military. The comments came at a Defense Ministry headquarters ceremony ahead of former deputy Aviv Kochavi taking the reins of the Israel Defense Forces.“I am leaving behind a competent military, ready and strong, which will only strengthen its power, wisdom and determination,” said Eisenkot, who is retiring after 40 years of service.“As an army of the people, the IDF above all must preserve its place in the center of civil public discourse,” he said.Eisenkot has pleaded in the past for the army not to be dragged into politics and vice versa, particularly amid the prosecution of a soldier who killed a wounded and disarmed Palestinian attacker in the West Bank. That case led to criticism of the army from some politicians on the right and death threats against Eisenkot. His comments on Tuesday came as an election campaign ramped up, with the army often serving as a political battleground.Eisenkot praised Kochavi’s leadership, saying his “determination and vast experience would strengthen the IDF’s readiness, preserve its values and continue to cultivate a sense of pride among the people.”The 54-year-old Kochavi was promoted from major-general at the ceremony, becoming Israel’s 22nd military chief. His official swearing-in will take place at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv later on Tuesday. In his remarks, Kochavi thanked Eiskenkot for his years of service to the IDF, saying that “time after time the IDF proved its strength in defending the borders of Israel under your leadership.”“I take on this role with reverence and see it as a privilege,” he said. “The IDF is the people’s army, which honors its soldiers who come from all parts of the nation, and are strengthened by the support of the people.”Kochavi previously served as commander of military intelligence, chief of northern command and most recently as Eisenkot’s deputy chief of staff. He also commanded the Gaza division during Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The new IDF commander takes over at a time when Israel is openly engaged in military operations to prevent Iranian entrenchment in Syria, while also facing weekly violent confrontations in the south on the border with the Gaza Strip and the constant threat of tensions with Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group.Internally, Israel is also in the midst of an election season, with security matters always high on the agenda, and the army has been subjected to criticism from lawmakers and an outside ombudsman that it may not be prepared for war.At the ceremony, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the leadership of both Eisenkot and Kochavi, but dedicated much of his remarks to warning Iran that continued entrenchment in Syria will lead to more Israeli strikes.

Amid split over Kurds, Erdogan and Trump weigh Syria ‘security zone’-US president had threatened he would ‘devastate Turkey economically’ if Turkey attacked Kurdish fighters after American troops withdraw-By Luana Sarmini-Buonaccorsi and Raziye AKKOC-TOI-16 January 2019

ANKARA, Turkey (AFP) — Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US counterpart Donald Trump mooted Monday the creation of a “security zone” in northern Syria as tensions rose over the fate of Kurdish fighters in the war-torn country. In a telephone conversation, the leaders “discussed the idea of creating a security zone cleared of terrorism in the north of the country,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.Trump confirmed this in a tweet later, but referred to the proposed area as a “safe zone.”This came after Turkey vowed it “will not be intimidated” by Trump’s threats of economic devastation if Ankara attacked Kurdish forces as US troops withdraw from Syria.Trump on Sunday warned the US would “devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds.”Ankara has repeatedly threatened to carry out a cross-border operation against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which have been working closely with the United States in the war on Islamic State (IS) jihadists.US support for the YPG has been a major source of friction between the NATO allies. The White House said in a statement that Trump had warned Erdogan against harming Kurdish military units.Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms. Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds. Create 20 mile safe zone….— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 13, 2019-“The president expressed the desire to work together to address Turkey’s security concerns in northeast Syria while stressing the importance to the United States that Turkey does not mistreat the Kurds and other Syrian democratic forces with whom we have fought to defeat ISIS,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.-‘Security zone’-But in his subsequent tweet, Trump put a more positive spin, noting that he and Erdogan “also spoke about economic development between the U.S. & Turkey — great potential to substantially expand!”The strained relationship between Ankara and Washington initially seemed to improve after Trump announced last month that 2,000 US troops would withdraw from Syria.Ankara welcomed the decision and Erdogan told Trump that Turkey could finish off the last remnants of IS.Trump has been pushing for the creation of a 30-kilometer (20-mile) “safe zone” in Syria.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday talks were under way on Washington’s proposal to establish the zone in flashpoint border areas of northeast Syria.“We want to make sure that the folks who fought with us to down the (Islamic State group) have security… and also that terrorists acting out of Syria aren’t able to attack Turkey,” Pompeo said on a visit to Riyadh.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier that Turkey was “not against” a “security zone” in Syria. And in their conversation Monday, Erdogan assured Trump that Turkey was ready to provide “any kind of support” to the United States in its withdrawal from Syria.Turkey views the YPG as a “terrorist offshoot” of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984.The PKK is blacklisted as a terrorist organization by Ankara, the United States, and the European Union.-‘Radical solution’-Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Ankara would “continue to fight against them all,” referring to IS and the YPG.There has been growing tension between Turkey and the US over the fate of the YPG, especially after Pompeo this month said Washington would ensure Turkey does not “slaughter” Kurds. And before a visit to Ankara last week, White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said the US retreat was conditional on the safety of Kurdish fighters, provoking angry retorts from Turkish officials.Turkey previously launched military offensives in northern Syria in 2016 and 2018 respectively against IS and the YPG. In early 2018, Syrian rebels backed by Turkish military forces captured the YPG’s northwestern enclave of Afrin.Ankara, which supports Syrian opposition fighters, is also involved in the last rebel bastion of Idlib, where Turkey has agreed a buffer zone deal with Damascus ally Russia. But the deal has not stopped an assault by jihadists in Syria.Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an alliance led by jihadists from Al-Qaeda’s former Syrian affiliate, last week extended its administrative control over the whole of the Idlib region.Syria’s National Coalition, the leading opposition body, on Sunday called for a “radical solution” to put “an end to its (HTS) presence” in Idlib.Cavusoglu however said the Idlib deal was being “successfully applied” and that statements that HTS took 50 percent of Idlib are “not true.”
